Matt Duchene, Tyler Seguin, Pete DeBoer & Sam Steel Respond to Avs SHUTTING OUT Dallas in GM4

[Applause] We knew it was going to be a series and it seems like that’s right where we are. Yeah. Um, you know, 22 two out of three going back home. I think that’s the important part. I mean, obviously they were better than us tonight and uh you know, it’s all about your response in a playoff series like this. So, I think we know we can play better and we have to play better. Um but you know, we’ve worked to put ourselves in a good spot uh with three games left to go. Uh it seemed pretty evenly matched in the first period and then those two special teams goals kind of takes a turn. Is that what you attribute the shift to or something else? Well, you know, we knew they were going to come out with a big push. I mean, you know, this a as close to a must-win as you can get for them, and they’ve lost two in a row, and they’re a great team. So, you know, the we we knew there was going to be a big push. I actually thought we handled it fairly well in the first. I thought if we could have weathered that storm, uh, you know, maybe got a goal. We had a couple looks on the power play early. Maybe we get that first goal, something changes. But, um, you know, the short-handed goal obviously is a back breaker. Jake coming out. I’m assuming that was just for rest for Monday. Yeah, just just for rest for Monday and and to get uh Casey to Smith some work. You know, if we’re going to keep playing here, we’re going to need both guys and Casey hasn’t played in a while. So, didn’t just just didn’t make sense uh in the situation we were in and how we were playing to to keep Jake in there, get him ready for Monday night. And you talk about weathering the storm. What is the key to that when they start tilting the ice? Is it just simplifying things? Sam Steel said not being on your heels is the key. Yeah, I mean there there’s a million things that go into that. We we didn’t do any of of the things we needed to do tonight to tilt the ice back. Uh what do you look at as far as the lack of goal scoring? It just seems like, you know, it’s going to be hard. It’s going to be a hard series, but there’s a bunch of guys who one goal would make a big difference for it. seems like it’s 2-2. Who cares who scored the goals? It’s 2-2 with two out of three left. It’s who scores the goals in the next three games. We knew it was going to be a tough series and obviously that’s where we’re at right now. Yep. I mean, give them credit. They played really well. Um tough to give up a shorty and a PP, you know, in the first period. Um we had some good shifts five on five pretty even there but uh you get back you get behind the eightball there and you know they had they had a really good you know second. We just weren’t able to uh we were taking on too much water tonight and um they were desperate. I mean, they knew they pretty much had to win that one to to make get back in the series and they did. And, you know, we got to uh we’ll lick our wounds here tonight and uh you know, get reset tomorrow and uh get ready for uh game five. Is there ever a worry momentum carries over? They seem to hit their stride, so to speak. They seem to be feeling very good about themselves. Well, we felt like that after game two. We felt like that after game three. So, it’s uh momentum is a you know, a fleeting thing. So, um, you know, we lost it, they gained it, and now it’s time for us to take it back. They had they were dominating in that second period, but you guys weren’t giving up a goal until Landy scored. How much of a momentum changer was that or a back breaker? Yeah, I mean, that next goal was big at two nothing deficit, right? So, they were able to get it and at that point, uh, you know, we weren’t generating enough to, uh, to push back. So, it’s tough to score three goals in a period in the playoffs. So yeah, that was probably the the the one that, you know, sealed it tonight. And yeah, like I said, it’s just regroup and go back at it here game five. What is the actual plan or tactic when you are done tilting the ice like that? I mean, I’m tilt it back. I mean, whatever you got to do to do that. I mean, yeah, I sometimes, you know, you got to tip your hat and I think, you know, we weren’t good enough tonight and they were they were great. So that’s uh why it ended up four nothing. Is it no surprise to anyone in this room that this is going to go to six and might go to seven? Yeah, I mean this is this is we knew this is a conference final in the first round. You we had one last year, we had one in the second round, we had one in the third round. Um this is four straight rounds of you know really tight checking hockey and you know there’s not a lot of going on five on five and um got to fight for every inch and you know hopefully we can find a way to get uh you know hot offensively here and get get some guys uh feeling good and um but sometimes you just got to grind until that happens. Good hockey team over there. They responded tonight and uh you know we got a chance to do that at home in a couple days. Offensively you guys are not getting the goals to go in. Is there anything you see? Yeah, I think we can, you know, get more pucks on net, hold on the pucks a bit more. Um, make a few adjustments, but uh, you know, we feel like we know how to how to win and, you know, we didn’t do that didn’t stick to our game plan tonight. They came out came out buzzing and, uh, great rink and never thought this was going to be one in four or five games, right? So, um, you know, excited to respond at home. How about Jake’s performance? Yeah, great. I mean, he was uh our best player tonight for sure. Again, um battling. I don’t know what the shots were going to the third, but I’m sure they’re pretty high. Felt like the first period things were a little more even and then kind of took a turn. Is there anything you can attribute that to? Uh I mean, yeah, shortand goal early, I think. Great. So, um maybe a PP goal, too. So, I mean, sometimes, uh special teams can give your team a boost and uh you know, we just didn’t catch up. How much was that goal at the end of the first period a momentum changer? I mean, momentum swings so much. Um, yeah, I mean, they had it. We had a chance to grab it and, uh, we didn’t do that tonight. Think we knew this was going to be a tough series in games like that to Yeah. No. Um, you know, that’s a really good team over there. We knew that. Um they uh yeah, you know, they had some desperation tonight and um you know, I don’t think we we we didn’t match it, especially in the second or third, but um you know, two out of three now, two at home, so uh we got to have a quick memory. How difficult is it to match desperation when it might not be there for you in the same way it is for them? Uh I’m not sure, but I think, you know, there’s no no excuse. We we have to find a way. But uh like I said, it’s it’s a two out of three now. And um you know, I’m not sure how much momentum there is in in a in a playoff series. You know, every every game’s a a clean slate. So, uh we’re just looking to bounce back and um come ready Monday. What is the best way when the ice tilts like that to actually flip it? Is it just simplifying things or I I think so. I think it’s it’s not uh not getting on your heels too much. I think when they’re pressing, we kind of got on our heels and started, you know, sitting back, not not checking as tight as we we like to. And they get rolling, we end up punting it, changing, and then they’re coming right back at us. So, uh I think, you know, we need to match their aggressiveness. Hey, hey, hey.

  1. DeBoer totally deflects the question on our biggest flaw over last month or more…the top guys not scoring goals!!! with a "Who Cares" comment…your the coach..you gotta make adjustments & light a fire up their asses..not "Who Cares"..you will if by Thurs or Sat we are done in 1st round on a season that was stamped as "This year is it"😡

  2. I don't understand stand. None of this makes any sense. In the last 2 games, you completely play at an incredible level. Checking skating and shooting. In this game, everybody is standing around, watching Colorado skating around unabated, shot after shot. It's so bad, by the 3rd period, you're out shot 48 to 16. WTF! Come on Dallas you can't play hockey like this!

  3. For me for years the Stars struggle self motivate to play peak hockey. They only play when they have their back to the wall and often they start that too late. I blame coaching. The coach is responsible for the motivation. to stand in front of them and yell or sweet talk or whatever it takes. the Leaders in the locker room should follow suit. this is the playoffs. they should plays desperate for 60 minutes. I miss stankoven because it seemed to play at that OMG i may lose my job any second go get them. Jake is the same. Does not seem to have the focus and intensity. Know for letting in bad goals in the first period.

  4. Dallas was outplayed by a country mile by a much better Colorado team. Dallas is in serious trouble in this series without Robertson and Heiskanen in the lineup!!!!!!!

  5. TNT announcers reported that Jamie Benn grabbed the puck. The Avs players were looking for it when the game was over. The puck should have been given to Landy. That's pretty low for the Stars that lost the game to take a puck that doesn't belong to them.
