POSTCAST: SAN JOSE BARRACUDA LOSE IN OVERTIME 3-2 TO COLORADO EAGLES
The Barracuda tie things up late but aren’t able to win it in overtime. You’re Locked on Sharks, your daily podcast on the San Jose Sharks, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. Hello, welcome to Locked On Sharks, the premier hockey podcast covering your favorite team in the Bay Area. My name is JD Young, caretaker at the Reef, also the co-host of Locked On NHL. I want to thank you for making Locked on Sharks your first or second listen of the day. Uh make sure uh if you want to be an everyday, all you have to do is just follow along wherever you get podcast. Of course, you can watch on YouTube as well as you are doing right now as we have our uh YouTube exclusive live shows covering the Barracuda playoff games. And uh unfortunately tonight Barracuda fall 3-2 in overtime to the Colorado Eagles in a game they they continue to like this Cuda team just never say die continue to hang in there uh type of performance but um worrisome with some of the players who left the game. So, uh, if you didn’t get a chance to watch, right, because it’s on flow hockey, um, one, pay for FL hockey. Two, uh, quick recap of the game. So, we normally don’t do this, but, you know, again, I’m trying to cover, uh, it’s just nice little recap since not everyone gets to actually watch uh, the game. So, uh, game early for Colorado. Uh, they score like a minute and a half. or two minutes into the game, uh, Ty Felbear scores a goal there. Jason Magna taps in, you know, increases the lead late in the second uh, to give the Eagles a two to nothing lead after 20 minutes. Um, the shots on goal were definitely in favor of Colorado 11 to8 in that first period. Second period, very early. It was heavy Colorado. They had a lot of power play opportunities the beginning of the second period. Um but credit to the Barracuda as they kind of fought back into the game. Um B said on the power play about mid 13 minutes um in uh from within assist from Colin Graph and Luca Canyone. Um makes it a game two to one. Uh shots were 11 to 11 in the second period. Third period Eagles come out pressing looking to end this thing. um put it up 3 to one where it felt like they like the Barracuda’s offense just right now just couldn’t solve um the Eagles but credit to to Barracuda um late Ascro pulled they’re able to find the tying goal Pavl Reenda in an absolute scrum in front of the net uh able to make it home they’re could almost almost almost win it in regulation with stop uh with a quality chance but just wasn’t able to put it home. We go to overtime. Everyone comes out. About 2 minutes in. Ascarov, there’s a whistle. Ascar has to leave the game with what uh sounds like cramps. Um at least from the broadcast, uh cramps in the game. Um and yeah, went off because of minor cramping. McCarthy says he’ll be fine, but um Gabe Kerier comes in. Barracuda get a couple of quality chances, but unfortunately uh little too much uh too many guys left in the offensive zone. A threeon two the other way. Gabe Kerry isn’t able to stop Matthew Phillips. Um and they Eagles win 3 to one to take a two to one series. Game four tomorrow night. Do or die situation for the Barracudas. So, um, let’s start with kind of the overall takeaway from this game cuz it definitely was not the Barracuda’s like a game in here. And, um, like to be I thought Colorado was the better team for the most part, but this team, this Barracuda team, they hang in there. They hang in there and they get some clutch performances, right? Pavo Regenda, who’s been absolute stellar for them since they traded mid-season trade. Um, with the, you know, game tying goal late. Um, Ascrov was was the the second goal was a little like that’s one I think he’d like to have back. Uh, where he like just doesn’t squeeze the pillows a little tight. Uh, kind of trickles through and then Jacob Magna is just kind of Johnny on the spot. They’re unable to uh to to put it in. So, uh, Liz, give JD money. Uh, Liz might be I think Liz is wiped out right now and is probably on her way, uh, home, so she’s had a long day. I was texting her, but she might knowing Liz, she’s probably still paying attention, but uh, yes. So, um, I do feel like though like Barracuda were a little lucky to be in this game. like it could have like this could have been one of those like five to one type of situations especially if Ascrov wasn’t playing well the second and the third period there like Ascarov shut things down. Um, Eagles had a couple chances. There was a breakaway uh where Ascarov just like super aggressive, comes out and plays it. And of course, he plays um he does a great job kind of shutting down that, but um it definitely like this game definitely kind of felt like it was a a it was there on the platter to steal a game in which you were out uh out of play unfortunately. So, um yeah, big news though, of course, uh Ascrov leaving does sound like he will be okay. So, I do expect him in that tomorrow, right? Um especially in a do or die game like the no more room for error uh for for for San Jose here. Uh Colin White also left the game in the first period. So, now you are down your top two centers, right, with Perolski who did not make the trip right now. Um, I’m assuming if there’s a game five, that’s when you hopefully maybe get Bordlo back or maybe get Powellski back. But Colin White also leaving who has done a great job kind of filling in for that number one role. Uh, Zel really kind of puts the Barracud in a tough position here. Um, Phil Bisa though has been playing really well and did a great job uh tonight playing that 1C role, right? Had the goal, almost had another one in overtime. Um, and Bets’s had a monster monster playoff performance, right? He’s got three goals so far this uh playoff, like in the playoffs here. Three goals in five games. Um, but I do think like you’re going, especially in a game where is do or die. You got to pull out all the stops. You wonder if Mike or not Mike if John McCarthy thinks about bringing in Quint Musty and or Eager Shernes because um you need some more offense, right? They’re they’re just not getting enough offense right now and the offense is very much uh stuck in the mud right now. So, um, especially if if we’re hoping White’s healthy, but the fact that he didn’t return to this game, not a great feeling about his availability for tomorrow if like he, you know, maybe if the game was like the ne the next day or something like that. Um, potentially possibly available, but I don’t know anything right now. Um, would would then we probably won’t find anything else to be honest. Um yeah, conf uh McCarthy says he has confidence Ascrov will be able to play tomorrow um from Shangpang. Uh oh, that’s a good one. Hold on. We’ll get to that here in a second. Um I do like I do feel like you need to have you need to maybe kind of break glass in case emergency whether the fireworks factory himself, I shush or Quinton Musty andor both. this team just needs to score more offense and I think you go down swinging right um with hopefully you go down swinging try to score some more offense um Pavle Regenda feeling confident as he should as you should scored the game you know game time goal late um and he says we’re not losing the series we’re gonna beat their ass tomorrow end quote thanks Shang Pang um he is Yeah, he’s ready to go and he’s d’s been backing up his play here. Um, so put your questions in the comments. We’ll start answering going through these here in a little bit. Uh, but I do I do also want to shout out the penalty kill which was great tonight, especially beginning the second period. That’s where things could have really gone off the rails for this team, right? And we’ve seen this team kind of do that, but they were able to to kind of come in and and really shut down. Yes. bend, bend, bend, but not break. We didn’t really see the shorthanded opportunities in this game that we saw in games one and two. Uh probably a little bit more of a tweak there from from John McCarthy to uh try to make Ascrov’s life a little bit easier, but they did a great job tonight. Uh and what could have been like could have gotten ugly here beginning of the second period. Um yeah, shutting down the Eagles here with three opportunities and not being able to score. Um, also good for the power play going for one for two tonight with Phil Beaststead. Uh, beautiful shot from Beaststead. So, um, but but yeah, I do like I do think you’re going to have to try to reach for some more offense cuz um it’s just it feels like the offense has been struggling here a little bit. So, let’s get to some of your questions um here. We’ll hang out for you know the next kind of 15 minutes or so, answer some of your questions. So, eat more bananas. Ascarov. Uh, poor Asky needs some more bananas. Yeah, you wonder too like with uh altitude, right? If that might have had something to do with it. Hopefully, he gets that IV, gets some fluids in, and he’s able to be go. But it does sound like uh it does sound like though McCarthy is pretty confident. If if Gabe Kerier is playing, I’m not feeling like I do like Gabe Kerier. I’m not feeling great about their Sherk chances if it’s Gabe or the Barracuda’s chances if it’s Gabe Ker in that Ascrov just such a difference maker. So, uh what happened with Musty? I really thought he earned a spot. I know. I was surprised too that Quinton Musty was not in this game. Um Sharks 1 and0 with Quinton Musty in the lineup in this series. 0 and2 without Musty. Uh the stats kids, the stats speak for themselves here. Uh Quinton Musty. Um I I get like giving a guy like Cardwell who’s a veteran in the AHL sense like he is a veteran with this Barracuda team, right? Two, you know, his second season here. He’s played in a lot of situations. Uh played in those situations for the Barracuda. I get giving him a chance to kind of come back in. But um yeah, I like I I do think you have to try to figure out a way to get at least Quinton Musty because even those sheltered minutes, Musty was very effective in those sheltered minutes. um the other night. So, uh let’s see. Carrie got to be ready. Tough situation or not? It’s I mean that’s really tough. Like I’m not putting that on Gabe Carrie. That’s that’s a tough situation to come into walk into overtime cold like that. That is a brutal situation and then having to face a threeon two uh and that that is that’s really hard to like Yeah. [Music] Uh yeah, really hard to say when he’s been sitting for an hour. Yeah, it poor guy. So um yeah, every day is an interview like it’s a tough situation especially on a threeon two like that. So um doer’s fault you could you know he abandoned the back check and pushed to lay a hit made it a fouron two you know. Yeah, the doer’s fault. They also they’ve kind of talked about on the podcast where um Daniel Gushian is basically like taking on like two guys at once there. Like go help Daniel Guushian out. Like please don’t leave Guushian um on on the like all out there by himself. So um this team needs the fireworks. Um again, I do think you have to get in either Quint Musty or uh Igor Sherneshoff. I would assume Musty kind of gets in first since he got to play last game. Um I do I do kind of assume there first but yeah I I it’s a little bit tough little bit tough to right now to see it. So um let’s see some other questions here. Knew it was good game when Kier came in. It’s again it’s you feel bad because like it’s a tough situation to kind of come in. So, do we get a look at the future with Musty, Bed, Shernes, Shave? Probably not. Probably not. If those guys are in, I assume Musty will be in kind of the same role he was in as like a third line because um Guushian like Guushian has earned his right to be a topline forward for the the Barracuda. You know, you’ll scored 28 goals like and just by accident. Um, you know, I think B said probably saw it in as the 1C. Um, and Colin Graph, who’s an NHL player, like that line should be the first line, right? Um, I think because if you throw that that first line out there with a musty or with a charave, do you trust them in their own zone? And you could have questions about Guushian if in his own zone, but at least he’s a professional. He’s played like 250 games at this point. like um yeah, like I I do think that they can like they they will figure something out in that way, but um yeah, it’s I think it’s a tough ass to put Musty on the first line in a playoff game type scenario. So um yeah, who else is asking was surprised to see the lineup switch after a win? curious by who out for um yeah I I like I said I maybe my guess is that McCarthy was trying to you know like give these veterans guys like Donovan Hull who’s been around for you know a while and uh who’s played very well this season right um Ethan Cardwell who’s been a very good uh Barracuda player give them an opportunity to to kind of get in so um Yeah. Who would be the four centers if white can’t go? That is an excellent question. Uh looking at the lineup here. So you probably So you have Beastad number one. Um you have Giles who can place center. I would probably throw him on on the second line center there. Um you have then you’re probably looking at a stop check on the third. Um, and then uh, yeah, I would probably go with Van Ro to be honest on the fourth line. I guess Van Robo is going to play tonight, which is a little weird because I think Van Ro is very good. Um, that would be the line. Those would be the centers I would go with because I do think Giles has been excellent um, in this playoffs and um, Congraph two assists tonight. So, um, yeah, but yeah, I I do think that’s how I if if I’m making the lines, right, and I’m just an idiot, as I’ve proclaimed on this podcast many many times, um, I’m probably running Guushian B said graph as your top line. All right. Um, second line, you could run like Giles um, in the middle with regenda. And then if you want to go like I’m trying to look at the really quickly. Um I’d probably go like Giles. Um Redenda. Maybe you could put musty there. That that one. Maybe you do something like that on the third line. Um you can go like doer. Oh, stop truck. [Music] Um yeah, we’re we’re running out of bodies here. uh dur stopchuck I guess h or if you want to bring in shernes you could potentially go there and then you could do uh Vincent Vanro boys and sabard on your fourth line that’s probably what I’m doing if you’re asking me but again I’m I’m an idiot so um that’s what I would do on on on the lines right there and give must like if you’re going to go down go down swinging because um right you need to score goals you’ve scored you know, every you’ve basically other than like kind of garbage time in in the first game, uh, when it was well out of hand, like it’s you haven’t struggled to score goals against this team. And, um, as the Barracuda’s offense has been very good this season, I think you got to figure out a way to score more goals and just hope that you can get enough defensively. Um, and I think you’ve gotten enough defensively. And if you feel like Asgrov is going to be good to go, um, just say Asgrov, like we’re trying to score four tonight, you can’t let in more than three. And just that’s that’s hopefully the plan, right? Uh, because I I do believe that’s that’s your best chance to win to be honest. I think is you got to you got to figure out a way to score some more goals. So, uh, Brian has played great the playoffs so far. Big and durable player. Does he play for the Sharks next season at some point? Uh, Pavo Regenda is actually an unrestricted free agent. uh so he can do whatever he wants this off seasonason and maybe he if he wants to come back uh to play with the Barracuda or you know maybe sign a deal and be one of those two-way players maybe that could be in his future but uh he’s not a restricted free agent Sharks don’t own his rights he could maybe go back to Europe like he the world is his oyster next off this offseason so he could do uh whatever he wants in in that perspective so um but yeah I I if I was the Barracuda I would be very interested in retaining Pav services. It feels like a really natural fit for uh what he brings to the organization. Kind of throw him a bone, maybe let him play couple NHL games here and there like and then, you know, but come in, help, you know, come play middle six forwards for us. So, uh yeah, that that’s kind of what I would I would do, but again, who knows? Uh, so many RFA and UFAS this off seasonason. That’s how it is, man. That’s that’s how it is. So, um, yeah, unfortunately it just kind of that’s the way it is, especially with the AHL, right? Where the contracts are so short and there’s such turnover all the time. That’s just kind of the way it is, unfortunately. So, some guys stick around for a while, you know, uh, but usually some of these guys are here for a couple seasons and then move on to the next organization. uh you know, you look at a guy like Andrew Ponderoski who’s bounced around at a bunch of organizations going around helping organizations get to the Calder Cup finals and then uh leaving to go help another organization who wants to go to the Calder Cup. So, um yeah, let’s get a couple more questions in here. Um and then we can call it a night because again it’s it just sucks that they lost tonight. Um, I do I do feel like you got a little lucky to be even this close and if you had stolen this game here, like you feel like you’re in a really great position. Um, but yeah, I do think uh yeah, thoughts on Osapuk’s performances so far, these playoffs? Not great, man. Uh, not super great. Um, again, I’m trying to I’m trying to apply the Fabian Zet Zetelin rule of just being like just just basically saying this whatever happens this season doesn’t really count. Uh, because like Fabian Zetelin, everyone was pissed off about Fabian Zetelin when he got traded when he first showed up. He already had like three points in 22 games. Um, and then everyone turned out to love Fabian Zetelin. So, I’m trying I’m applying the same rule of just like I’m not really I’m just this whole rest of the season with a stop truck. I’m just not counting. Uh because I I feel like he is Yeah, it’s sucks. It’s tough to get traded uh mid-season, especially when you go from a team like the Sins who were playing for a playoff to the Sharks who were not, right? Uh, so, um, I will be very, yes, I’m going to give him an incomplete on this season, like no matter what. Uh, going to give him an incomplete. So, we’re going to go into next off seasonason with fresh eyes, uh, to next season with fresh eyes on the stop truck because, yeah, um, it is what it is. So, some guys do well when they get traded, some guys just don’t respond well. Um I’m going to hopefully hopefully we see a stop truck um have a really good off season and and have a really good training camp. That’s the hope, right? Trying to be positive. So um and he can fill that 4C role for the Sharks. So that’s that’s the hope. So yeah. Um but overall though I do think um this kind of feel like if the Barracuda lose this series I think this is going to be a game where you look at as like you had an opportunity to steal one here and go up two to one. Um but I do expect them to come out really and play really hard. I think for them they need to establish a lead early. you know, you look at all these games um and right, they’re always trying to have to play catch-up in these games and so it would be nice for them to come out and establish their game early um and being able to like put some points on the board, like get an early goal, like get an early lead. this team just they have not been able to establish a lead cuz I think when this team gets ahead right um they’re so good at puck control and and maintaining the puck and if you have the lead and you can maintain the puck like that I think it’s it just makes life really hard for your opposition and then especially when you have Ascrov who can clean things up back there. Um so yeah I I do think that is key to success for for game four. You got to start on time. Like start on time, score, like you need to get an early lead in that game and and put Colorado on their heels, especially in a game, a closeout type of scenario. So, u because I do think you have played Colorado outplayed Colorado for majority of the series, but you just haven’t been able to get up on this team. So, I think if they do that, if they can get a lead early, I think they have a really good chance of pushing this to game five. So, um we’ll see tomorrow. So, I’m going to try to do a live stream. I’ll try. My uh my youngest has uh callbacks for soccer tryyout camp or for soccer triyout. So, um so I’m probably going to miss the first like two periods of the game. Uh we’ll see. I might be able to might be able to. So, just keep an eye out on YouTube uh if you know uh if we get a potential Yeah, if we get a potential live stream. So, um but also go check out there’s already a podcast. Tomorrow’s podcast is already up. Uh I talk with Stephen Ellis about the uh late first round picks. Uh we’ll have another podcast for you on Thursday and Friday as well. Uh so make sure you guys are following along wherever you get podcasts. Of course, you’re watching on YouTube right now. If you haven’t subscribed, perfect time to hit that subscribe button. Uh hit get hit get the little notifications. That way you know exactly when I go live and exactly when new episodes drop and all that good stuff. Um so yeah, until tomorrow. Bye friends.
Despite scoring late in Game 3, the San Jose Barracuda lost in overtime 3-2 to the Colorado Eagles and now face elimination. Filip Bystedt scored his third goal of the playoffs, and Pavol Regenda scored late, but Yaroslav Askarov left the game in overtime with cramps, and Gabe Carriere was not able to stop a 3-on-2. What tweaks do we see in Game 4, especially if Collin White is unavailable.

Barracuda fought hard they were a little off tonight, but they win next game for sure
