Caputo: Red Wings must stop bargain shopping

  1. Caputo is a blow hard, but I do agree with the sentiment that the Wings need to be taking bigger swings on player acquisition.

  2. Is it bargain shopping? Or is it paying name-brand players to fill a role they’ve never filled before? Like Yzerman said in his recent presser, the cheaper deals worked out

  3. >[Bad veteran signings…] It’s how the Red Wings became a hot mess during the 2024-25 season, and why 2025-26 will start, to an alarming degree, behind the 8-ball.

I mean, sure, yes and no though. Next year we are still stuck with a lot of these bad contracts, but the following year, the roster is going to blow wide open. I think we need to fill what, 15 roster spots? Including goalies? The team will look very different *after* next season.

    >He has gradually fallen into the same money pit as his predecessor Ken Holland. Actually, it’s alarming how some of these signings mirror such Holland gems as Trevor Daly, Mike Green, Frans Nielsen and Stephen Weiss.

Sure, but again, most of these bad contracts are done in two years. And that is right when I expect the team to contend. Shit, we still haven’t developed a goalie. Also worth noting, the drafting and development has been very, *very* good, especially if we are putting him up against Holland. When these contracts run their course, we’ve got a solid pipeline of young ELC players ready to fill roles here, and likely do better than the current gaggle of aging veterans. That is never something Holland had in place.

    >But please, no more buying at the bargain bin during free agency.

Yeah, this. Its time to sign younger, impact guys, for big money instead of middling 6 aging veterans for medium money.

Decent article, but its viewing the roster as a snap shot, not the organization as a progression. To say Yzerman hasn’t made progress isn’t true. Building through the draft just takes time, and when you have the second worst lottery luck in the league over his tenure… well, its going to take a little longer.

  4. > The Red Wings were the sixth-oldest team in the NHL last season with an average age of 29.08

    PREACH IT BROTHER. Preach it.

  5. The Red Wings are getting there and will be fine. I would not overspend and it will be good and reasonable. I truly believe Steve Yzerman will add a good player either on the forward side or D. Would like to get Kyle Connor next offseason.

  6. Why do people assume they haven’t tried to? Other teams can sometimes present better opportunities.
