Dallas Stars ANNIHILATE Jets in 3rd Period to take Game 3: Mikko Rantanan makes more NHL HISTORY!
Mo Rantin cannot be stopped and the Dallas Stars dominate the third period over Winnipeg to take game three by a final score of 5-2 and more importantly a 2-1 series advantage. How about that third period from the Dallas Stars? Absolutely lights out from the Stars to close this one in game three to take a five-2 victory over the Jets. Just completely suffocated the Jets. gave them a taste of their own medicine to take a 2-1 series advantage and that was a very very good game from the Dallas Stars. We’ll break it all down on today’s episode of Locked on Stars. We have to talk about Bishell and Petro Vic. My goodness, they are playing some incredible, incredible hockey right now against one of the league’s best and this is a better formula for the Dallas Stars moving forward to win hockey games against a very, very good Jets team. But what a game three on Sunday afternoon at the American Airlines Center. We’ll jump into in just a bit. But first, today’s episode is brought to you by Monarch Money. Take control of your finances with Monarch Money. Use code lock.nhl and monmoney.com for 50% off your first year. We’re we’re going to begin with with Mo Ranson and the the gift that just keeps on giving. Another three-point night for him. Of course, he was stifled in game two and he he took over once again and and Ma Granlin also was spectacular for the Stars. When Granlin and Hence are playing to their capabilities, it just gives so much more time and space for Mo Rantin to do what he does best and that’s playmaking and that’s scoring daggers. And he did it in the third period tonight. He sets up the the Petravic goal who got the fortuitous bounce off his skate blade. My goodness, why did they need to to review that goal for as long as they did? That lasted almost 10 minutes. It it it felt like at at first my initial reaction was this is going to come off the board. And then 5 minutes later, I’m thinking they’re taking so long to look at this. It it has to count. and and it could not have happened to a better person and Alex Petrovic who who deserved it maybe more than anybody else on this Dallas Stars team. But Rantinon picked up an assist on that and then what was it 40 seconds later even less than that. Rantin just goes cookie jar on Hella Buck. What a shot. As soon as they came across the line I was saying goal goal. He gets it. So much time and space again created by Henson Granlin going to the net. Rantin just delays delays and then throws it where mama hides the cookies. I thought it was just such a phenomenal third period after what we saw at the end of the regular season where Dallas just got roasted in almost every third period over the last month or so. This was certainly a nice change of pace going into a frame where they didn’t play all that great in the second period. There was a big lull. They started well, they finished well, but there was that big lull which allowed Winnipeg to tie the game, but they carried some of those shifts that they had late in the second into the third period and just took it to Winnipeg. And that was a great great sign, especially on home ice. Like, go get it. Don’t don’t just lay back. don’t lay back and let it come to you. Force the issue, dictate the play. And their forch check was much better. In that second period, there just was no energy really for a large chunk of that frame. They they brought it in the third and it was led by some of their their big boys of course in Ranton and and and hence and Jamie Ben started to play better as well in the second half of this hockey game. I’ve been harping on him. He he he was awful the first half. He took another just inexcusable penalty putting his team down a man. He’s fortunate the Stars penalty kill has just been lights out. Four for four tonight. I I’m so glad they didn’t give up a goal late when it was a six on four as well because it would have put a bit of a a stain on their their uh just their their overall numbers and just their their overall PK with Sam Steel and Colin Blackwell. by the way, who was awesome tonight. He has to stay in the lineup. Just a spark. Provides a spark and energy. The Energizer Bunny for for Dallas. And you saw right off the hop just him moving his legs. Wyatt Johnston, I was nice to see him get on the board um as as well late because at at one point he was the best player in the hockey game that didn’t have a point. Um he saved a goal in the first period with his his PK work by lifting the stick of Morsy to or at least foul him up just enough to to force the the shot wide. The amount of defensive plays Wyatt Johnston made that were just highlevel incredible just nifty plays that don’t really pop out to you a ton. He he made every single one of them tonight. He he he his his 200 foot game was on display for the world to see. Incredible stuff from him. It was nice to see him get a bit of an empty net or late. I thought the Stars almost screwed that up as as Ben had the initial chance and uh Johnston was there to to bury it for him. But just I I thought this was probably the best best game or or best period of the postseason for Dallas. This third period uh in particular. I I thought game one was probably their best overall game. G game three tonight, that that third period was their their best period of the postseason. I I don’t know if it’s it’s that close either. And it’s not like the the numbers are completely uh completely lopsided in Dallas’s favor. Outside of the goals, of course, they they they scored three, but the shots on goal were were eight apiece, and some of those come later in the period when it was pretty much out of hand. the possession numbers. Dallas at 48% at five on five, but they they obviously kicked it into gear for that little bit and they they just took the will out of Winnipeg. It felt like it was a really quiet period from the Jets. That Winnipeg team was Dallas in in game two in Manitoba, right? Just no life. Really can’t create anything at the under at the other end of the rink. and um just just had no answers and and and and Dallas did that tonight and and that’s a great sign. Um and it brings you back to sort of my point in game one too where these final 20 minutes they they did it in both of their wins in this series. Now game one that third period spectacular to close it out they were up 3-2. I did not think the score was going to hold and they closed it out and won the game at 3-2 and were excellent in the third period. They did that again tonight and I I know I I talked about it a bit against Colorado where I I don’t believe Dallas can just shut down teams offensively. Maybe some of that is just Colorado has a bit more. They just have a a little bit more superstar talent where you have to deal with McKinnon and Macar so much that Winnipeg doesn’t have that. Although, like, let’s be real, Kyle Connor’s one of the best goal scorers in the NHL over the last three years. Um, I I don’t want to knock anybody over on that side, but I think it’s fair to say the amount of pressure McKinnon and Macar can put on you is is a different level than than even Kyle Connor and some others on Winnipeg. But they’ve shown the ability to to sort of lock it down in front of Jakeer. And Otter made a couple of great saves today. He was excellent. didn’t like the first goal he gave up. He kind of fell which was unfortunate but after that was was phenomenal and he he continues to be excellent this entire postseason and I just thought it was such a such a lights out third period. Look at this from from Ranton and his game score is 4.65 the expected goals for uh or his goals for 2.88 tonight. Um, look, they they have to get him on the ice as much as possible. And and I threw out I threw this out there um about the middle of the game and and and Ben started to play better. Why not throw 96 out there with Robo and Johnston a bit every other shift? Is Jamie Bench just not giving you enough? I I don’t know what it is. He could be hurt, but he’s he’s hurting he’s hurting the stars more than he’s helping them. And look, I I love Jamie Ben. I usually go to bat for him, but it’s it’s a glaring weakness right now for whatever reason. And and he he played better the second half of the game. And I I want to be fair to him because I I I did I did like his his last few shifts of the second period and his third period for uh for the majority uh of the the final 20. Of course, he created a goal with Johnston. He should have scored an empty net goal, too. Um but it it got blocked uh towards the end. But um I just thought there were some phenomenal performances. Petravic of course with a goal. Could not have happened to a better guy. Hence gets a goal and assist tonight. Harley I mean what more to say um about him. And Ransin played he played 1727 tonight. Hence played 1907. Uh Lindell played 2543. So these are these are good good signs for Dallas. And you just the scoring chances in favor of Dallas tonight 33 to 18 at five on five. Just a complete switcheroo from what we saw in game two. High danger chances 18-10. Look at this though in the third period. I think this just kind of hammers home the point. And we’ll end with this. Six high danger chances for Dallas in the third period. Zero for Winnipeg. A big fat zero. That’s how you close out a hockey game. And that’s how you go win a hockey game. They They didn’t really close it down. They They were tied after 40 minutes today. That’s how you go and absolutely take it. And I I love to see that out of Dallas. And this was a characteristic we we saw a lot out of the Stars in future years or or in previous years. And it it’s still in there. And some of us drank the Kool-Aid a bit, I think, late in the regular season, including myself. Look, don’t get me wrong. I I thought this team was toast. Um they they have they have completely flipped the script and they’re starting to revert back to some of those tendencies, those characteristics of a team that can be really lights out in front of their net minder. Um and they can score because they have the depth to do it. Um and they score five tonight. Hence gets on the board. Harley, Petravic, Ranton, and Johnston. Five different goal scorers tonight. Of course, Rantin’s gonna get a lot of headlines, and he should. What was the the statistic they brought up? Maybe I can find it while I scroll the X. Uh the first player in NHL history with uh what was it? Uh three plus point games and and 10 postseason games. I think it was something along those lines. Um just uh cra and here’s another uh well stat. Actually, we’ll leave this for the next segment because it kind of uh plays into that. So, we’re going to have to touch on Bishop and and what he did tonight. But um okay, here’s um uh here’s an explanation from the NHL situation room on the Petravic goal. So, this will give us a a great insight to to what they were looking at. Um because I was curious. So, NHL situation room on Petravic goal. Uh here’s the the quote. After looking at all available replays, video reviews supported the referee’s call on the ice that Connor Halabuk propelled the puck into his own net, which I think many of us thought that. Why it had to take that long, I I don’t know, but they got the call right. So, I I’m not going to be uh too uh too worked up about it, but I I thought that was pretty obvious from the start that Hellbuck knocked it into his own net. But they did their due diligence and for my money they they got the call correct and um and Dallas of of course went on to take uh went on to just take advantage of it. Um not that it really had to take advantage of it but Ranton and I think really delivered the dagger with the fourth stars uh goal um of the night. But let’s talk about Bishel and Patraic because it’s not just big guys throwing their weight around. They’re they’re much more than that. And I I I don’t want to provide a caveat anymore when talking about them like I have here over the first couple weeks of the postseason. I’ll I’ll tell you what that means in just a moment. Today’s episode of Locked On Stars is brought to you by Monarch Money. You’ve heard me talk about our good friends at Monarch Money. So, the caveat I was speaking to uh just a moment ago about Liam Bishell and Alex Petravvic because I I’ve touched on him um here and there throughout the the the postseason about how they’re just playing above their level so to speak and how Petravic is played most of his time in the AHL the last few years and Bishop’s just his rookie. Enough of that. This is just a really solid third pairing for Dallas. This is a a very very capable five and six defenseman in the NHL. There’s no more cav. They’re just they’re they’re damn good at at what they do. And Bishel tonight, this is really interesting. It comes from Michael Dixon. Uh per the Stars media guide that this ties a franchise record. Liam Bishell finished the game with a game high 13 hits on the last 13 game. last 13 hit game was Brendan Morrow against Anaheim in um in ‘ 06. So 13 hits from Liam Bishop and that is a part of his game and we saw tonight he just he cleans up he cleans up the opposition on the walls. He just tosses bodies around and it’s not just that it’s his board play which is really fantastic. He makes extremely smart plays in pressured situations when he’s got forchecking and pressure on his back and he just makes really smart tape totape passes. Petravic does the same. Their awareness is really strong. They know where one another’s going to be. They they play the angles well and they clean up and they close plays before before it gets chaotic. They they close down plays quickly even off the rush and they don’t they’re not overwhelmed by any speed that is thrown at them. I just I just have loved their game. Um and that’s why I thought it was so awesome Petravic scored. He he he deserved it. Um and that’s that’s a kudos to him for jumping up in the rush. He became another option for Dallas. He becomes an option. Does a little give and go with Rantin and then he tries to get it to the net and he does with a little motion kicking, whatever you want to call it, redirection. Who cares? Um and it goes off a hillbuck because he he goes to the net and he gets into those positions. Steel deserves a lot of credit for for that goal, too. Um that was similar to the game seven goal Mo scored where Steel just drives center ice. he takes a defender with him and it opens up uh all that space. But no more caveat while I’m talking about these two. Um they’re just a really really solid pairing for for Dallas. And frankly, they’ve been the best pairing for Dallas in in in the playoffs. If you look at their expected goal share, it’s not just it’s not just shutting down opponents offensively. like they have had a hand in Dallas’s offense and I can bring up some numbers via money puck for you because it it’s actually um incredible stuff if you like a Bishel and Petravic 62.5 expected goals per it’s the best that’s the best among pairings on Dallas they’re expected goals for 4.5 that’s that’s second um only to Harley and Labouchkin which is not a surprise since Harley scored three goals um and he uh we know what he brings um to the table. Um but I just thought it was a lovely lovely game from those two and and for that fact um I should shout out I mean CC um and Lindell were phenomenal to tonight too. Let’s um let’s not forget about that. Uh Labouchkin too. I I just I thought Dallas played a a nice physical hard-doed hockey game tonight. And you can even look at the hits if you’re into that sort of thing as an indicator. I I don’t touch on this a lot, but 42 hits to 41 in favor of Dallas. That’s good. That’s good stuff. And they’re they’re matching Winnipeg’s physicality because they didn’t do it in game two. And we saw how that went and and Dallas responded. It’s a series of responses so far. Game four will be rather intriguing in Dallas, but the Stars take game three tonight. They take a 2-1 series advantage and um uh a much much better game. And I I know some were uh a bit weary after game two. Uh I tried to throw the the caution flags out there. It’ll be all right. Dallas is going to play much better in game three. and they did that here um this afternoon. Um also it was nice to have a game over by six o’clock um at night and and not having to stay up past midnight um every every uh every game. So that that was also a big winner for me today. Plus the Stars got their first win on TNT. They were 0 and4 previously. So boom, they they knocked that off uh they checked that box uh as as well here tonight. But a much better formula for Dallas to carry over in into game four. And I want to talk about that here as well to to close out today’s episode. And we’ll do that in just a moment. Well, tonight I think is a really good example of what this Stars team is in a lot of ways. Um, and I I know we we got to a point where it’s like Rantinon is scoring so much, nobody else is, and they need some other guys to chip in. And there was certainly some of that tonight, but also Rantin had three points and and had a hand on uh a lot of uh a lot of uh a lot of the goals tonight. Um but look, he he’s an elite player, he’s he’s going to do that. That’s why when Dallas does get some help from others, they’re they’re they’re going to dominate some teams offensively just because they have so many weapons. Um and and part of that was they they did flip the trios back a little bit. Uh we talked about this after game two. I I like that they they put Duchain with Sean um and Marchment tonight. I thought that line was spectacular. They ended up with 12 scoring chances tonight. Um that line. Um it it stinks that uh they didn’t really cash in any points. I don’t think yeah Sean Ben or pardon me Sean Marchment or or Duchain did not pick up a point in the game but I thought they were excellent and that was good to see because when Sean came back um well obviously they scored what 5 seconds into the regular season finale or whatever it was. But in the Colorado series there not a whole lot from from Duchain. Um there was there was a lot better signs from from Duchy tonight. They they still need him to produce. Uh but there was good signs from that line. 12 scoring chances and five against like you’re gonna take that. Um I I thought Robo was pretty quiet tonight. Wasn’t his his best game. He was much better actually um in game two, weirdly. Um enough uh I thought, but he he did create that chance late um in regulation. Game was out of hand already. But I I think I just think you got to get Mo on the ice as much as possible. Throw him out there with with Robo and Johnston a bit. Maybe that can unlock something. Um and and Ben’s line was better late just because he was playing better, but we’re not getting that enough consistently. Uh of course the the top line, seven scoring chances, that was second most. Um Johnston Ben Donov, weirdly enough, had eight scoring chances at five on five um in four minutes of of play. So that was that was uh that was actually second most, pardon me. So like that that line showed something which was good and and they were they were just kind of throwing some different pieces together tonight. Um the fourth line I thought was really excellent. They had a few shifts early in the game where they they were able to just hem in uh the the the Jets. Um, and look, that’s all you ask for out of that line. Um, and Sam Steel’s just been phenomenal all postseason long. Like, there was a couple of unsung heroes tonight. I thought Johnston was in there. Uh, Sam Steel, of course. Uh, you know, Donov had a a decent game, too. Um, but they they they went back to some some different lines. They went back to some normal trios. Um, of course, and I I thought it paid off tonight, but I just I I it’s a thought. Have Have Mo play with Johnston and um and and Robo a bit. I think you could also also have Hints double shift every other shift. Have him play with Johnston and Robo. Uh like like why not? I know I know Dbor wants to roll four lines and and use all of his depth and they need to do that at points, but I just I just think this team is is almost unstoppable offensively when when they’re going like they are. Um you just get the feeling that they’re they’re going to make a difference if if they’re out there on the sheet. Um, and when you get that, Stars are in good good hands. And when they’re playing defensively like they did in the third period, um, and Otter’s just going to be Otter, the Stars team has a very solid formula to win. And, and I haven’t even mentioned special teams yet, which they won tonight. They go one for two on the power play. They go four for four on the PK. And I didn’t love a lot of the calls. I get that. But some Stars players are not going to get the benefit of the doubt. Uh even Jamime Ben, I didn’t love that um the call that much, but he he’s not going to get the benefit of the doubt right now because um just he’s not he’s not playing hard enough or he’s he’s not going to earn um some of those non- calls. And there was probably a a few calls Dallas should have got in that second period, too. Um, but look, you’re not always going to get the whistle, okay? You just got to play through it. Um, and if Dallas continues to work hard and and move their feet, they’re going to earn some of those calls. Um, like they’re going to earn them. Um, and if if they continue to do that, um, they’re going to be in good hands. But with a PK’s lights out as it been as it’s been and they get the power play goal, it’s it’s going to be tough tough tough team to beat. Um, but Winnipeg didn’t play that great tonight. I think we can all uh agree on that to to some degree. I don’t think we saw the best out of Winnipeg, and I’m sure we’re going to get it in game four, and it will be another really solid test. But I just I love what Dallas has done in their two wins in this series, holding on and just closing out a 3-2 win in game one on the road and then back home going into a third period tied. Like, they went and took it. They just went and took it. And that’s what I loved about it. They didn’t just sit around and and try to wait for stuff to happen. That sort of was a trap I think they got stuck in. That second period was just that big lull where they were on their heels and they just weren’t forcing the issue. And on home ice they went and buried a really really good team in a third period. I mean the AC continues to buzz and rock. Um and just a a a phenomenal phenomenal win tonight. Like well done. Um I think as simple as that. So they take a 2-1 series advantage. The beat goes on for for Mico Ranson. It’s it’s special special special stuff. Um and Dallas gets a bit of everything from everybody. I mean you can go to the hockey stats and look at it. I mean boom. Um I I think that that really tells the the whole story. and rantin. Oh, he’s he’s special special players, ladies and gentlemen. Um, and I feel bad that we almost come on here and we talk about him so much, but it’s it’s hard not to with the performances he’s putting up. And I I try to spread the love around. I I really do. And I’m wearing a a t-shirt of uh someone that should have never gotten traded, just like Mo Rantin. So, I think that um is a perfect way to to wrap up um today’s episode. It’s a Luca Donuch Maverick’s shirt, by the way, for for those of you that are on audio only. But that’s going to do it for today’s episode of Locked On Stars. We’re done by 7:00 tonight recording. That’s awesome. And the Stars won tonight 5-2, taking down the Jets, dominating third period. Special teams came to play. A lot of really solid defensive stuff. um from Johnston, Steel, Blackwell on the PK. Um they deserve all the love. Petravic gets on the board. I mean, it’s all smiles tonight in game three. They got a a two-1 series advantage, more importantly, and uh we’ll be moving on to game four in a couple days. So, have a a great rest of uh your weekend that you do have here, Stars fans, and uh we’ll be back for game four. And uh we’ll see you on the next episode of Locked on Stars. So long.
On today’s episode of Locked On Stars, Joey Erickson reacts to the Dallas Stars 5-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets in Game 3. Built off a 3 goal third period the Stars dominated the final 20 minutes to dispose of the Jets and Mikko Rantanen made more history. The Stars depth scoring came out in a big way with goals from Wyatt Johnston, Alex Petrovic and Thomas Harley to lift the Stars to a 2-1 series advantage. In the next segment, Joey highlights the play of Lian Bichsel and Petrovic and how instrumental they have been this postseason. To close out the show Joey discusses the winning formula for the Stars and how dangerous they can be when play like they did in the 3rd period.

Go stars
Time for Winnipeg to go golfing
Go Stars!
Stars in 6…. Watch
So glad they were hot tonight, next game; we can only hope so. Go Stars!
This is great but having a healthy miro should would be nice
I want sure they’d step up at home given their record but a 5-2 victory is great 😊. Mikko Ratenen got another point he’s been a big factor in this series. Jamie Ben played tough and physical which is what the team needs from him no stupid penalties through 3 games. It feels like the other lines were contributing as far as scoring goals.
Is Miro a game time decision yet
Go Stars…..HOOP
We want the stanley cup cup cup…. XP
Now do it again.
Congrats to Hellebuyck for completing an away game without getting pulled for the backup.
Miko on the ice for 4 of the 5 goals scored
Now can we get multiple in a row
Jets in 7! Dallas getting VERY LUCKY these days!!!
we have to keep that kind if physicality…even though Bichsel contributed 33% of those hits!!! I love the way they SET THE TONE today
Stone seems to be getting his just desserts
Stars make me proud today 🥲
I’m low key glad miro hasn’t been back. The stars winning without him proves how good they are and I’d rather him be 100% than being 75% and in desperation mode. Let him heal and bring him back when he can make a difference
How much Nike pay you for wearing that shirt? Dont wear that for free man
sooooo glad blackwell was back in he provides so much for dallas
Thanks for your coverage of the Icerays! It was a blast to tune in!
Jamie definitely in a slump
Maybe this game gets him back in the fight
Why didn’t Hellebuyck get assist on Petrovic goal?
😂Just kidding 😂
I would like to see Mikko work with Bishel in practices
I believe Bishel can and will do more in years to come
Bishel working with Miro Rantanen Robo and Wyatt
I believe Bishel can be one of best defensive players in league
Bishel is going to learn a ton from having really great players around him
He looks like a sponge that will soak up all that knowledge around him
I liked Robo in this game more than his return game
Robo knows points will come and decide tonight he was going to be more physical
Go back and watch again
He was active all over ice and checking players in the boards
Robo was headhunting
Cant wait to see miro and rant (and rest) next year. I think maybe colorado was minimizing rants abilities, so much so maybe he himself did not know. I could tell from game one with dallas, extremely intelligent player. Next year, about the halfway point, we’re probably going to witness one of the best teams ever put together.
Rinse. Lather. Repeat.
Let’s go, Boys!! 👊🏼👊🏼👍🏼👍🏼🙂
Mikko doing same dallas what Connor doing edmonton. But difference, dallas have much better other players. Dallas win stanley.
@joeytheJET is giving the locked on stars podcast, sounds sus… lol
I really feel that this is finally our year! Wait until Miro comes back!
Let's go get game 4. Score early score often
