Can Freddie finish out this series for the Carolina Hurricanes against the Washington Capitals?
Uh Eric Cole is joining us here on the Adam Gold Show. Uh as we get ready for game number four tonight, uh I want to get the last time you and I talked and it might have been the time before we were we were searching for Andre Svetchikov. We apparently found him. So uh your thoughts on what we saw from Andre certainly in the middle of the second period? Yeah, I I love I mean that was always, you know, one of the things that we that we taught was um winger on the wall. It’s a you’re racing the defenseman to your, you know, that’s standing next to you to the front of the net. Um and you you’re so you’re trying to cut underneath their centermen. So that way if any pucks, you know, fit in that general area, you’re the first one on it. Or even if the net front D, you know, grabs it, you’re right on them. Um, and, you know, to see him just kind of, you know, just be powerful right off right off the face off, right off the, you know, the start there and and jump through there and then obviously make a great shot uh on top of it. was uh yeah, it was great to see and certainly a a huge goal um you know at at that moment in the game and and I think that you know while the team was was playing well you know they weren’t really getting the results and then they finally you know started to see it and you know we we we saw what happened the rest of the game where they I think I felt like they just smothered them and just wore them down. It was two different games, right? The first 30 minutes, Washington controlled, Freddy Anderson kept them in it, and then the last 30 minutes, which was one-way traffic. Yeah. And and that’s that’s I mean, that’s how it goes lots of times in the playoffs. it, you know, those just those, you know, simple little plays that lead to something, you know, much bigger and then all the momentum changes and now you’re, you know, you’re fighting an uphill battle and and I thought, you know, while that was happening, the Hurricanes, uh, you know, started playing, you know, even stronger and, you know, there was there was more confidence to their games. Eric Cole is joining us here on the Adam Gold Show. Game four tonight. Do you believe in momentum from game to game in the playoffs? Absolutely. I think it was a little bit more prominent um you know back in the day when uh like the you know before you were you know just constantly going you know pretty much every other day right? Um, you know, I would point to that, uh, the O2 Cup run where we won game four in Montreal, came back here for game five on Mother’s Day, but we were right back in Montreal the next night for game six, and we steamrololled them like five 51 in in in on on in game five on on Mother’s Day. And we car we carried that literally right into the bell center the next night and you know we beat them eight to two. So I I do believe in in momentum you know from game to game for sure. I remember you guys scored five goals in the first period of game six in Montreal. It seemed like once uh you guys solved Jose Theodore it was over. Yeah. Sometimes those lefties are a little tricky. Uh but I mean he had an outstanding year. He was you know he was a league MVP and u but you know he and you you look at you know Washington season you know probably one of the best things that happened to them was you know when Alexander Ovetkin got hurt you know they actually you know started playing you know some really good hockey but they got really good goalending this year. Yeah. Um, and so it, you know, it’s really important for, you know, the Hurricanes to to get to him and and try and get to him, you know, early. Uh, obviously, you know, he’s another one of those goalies that doesn’t like traffic. So, um, yeah, he, uh, you know, he he had a great year and and so I I I think, you know, with with what happened in game three and the way that the Hurricanes finished the game, I I I look forward to seeing them, you know, continue continue that momentum tonight. Eric Cole is joining us here on the Adam Gold Show. What do you make of Frederick Anderson’s playoffs so far? Yeah, I just I I just love how how calm Freddy is just I mean I feel like it’s just by nature like it is, you know, when you when you speak with him and everything. Um but he’s just he’s very calm in the net. Um you know, doesn’t you it’s almost like Fodor is like kind of the exact opposite where he’s big movements and we’re trying to you know Yeah. trying to reel it in. Um but yeah, he he reminds me a lot like with Cam, Cam was like that as well. Just, you know, real just quiet in the net and, you know, when he when he had to, uh, you know, he can be very athletic. Um, I think that’s, you know, the same thing with with Freddy. When he when he needs to be, you know, super athletic, he can be, but he’s so quiet and positionally like sound, he doesn’t necessarily have to do it a lot. Eric Cole is joining us here on the Adam Gold show. Yeah, that’s the thing. And especially that first save against Wilson. What was it? 30 seconds in and Tom has been he’s certainly been Washington’s best player and that could have complete it could have sent the game going in a completely different direction. He steers that aside just comfortably like it just calmly slid across and said, “Nope, we’re not. That’s not going in now.” And like I just think that set up his entire first period. Yeah. And sometimes that’s, you know, what it what it takes lots of times for for a goalender is to just, you know, get those first couple shots and get those first couple saves and then, you know, you you really settle right in uh into the game. And I I just I think he’s been he’s been great this this playoff run so far. and hopefully it continues. Uh, how much do line changes in terms of juggling the lines, how much do you think they matter or is it simple? Is it simply cuz that cuz Carolina’s best play came very soon after Rod juggled three of the four lines. How much of it matters in terms of the combinations and how much of it is kind of just all right some it’s a it’s not working let’s just try something else. Well, the combinations are, you know, realistically that’s not really where it matters the most because at this point pretty much everyone’s played with everybody at some point this season, right? like everyone should be comfortable, you know, being on the ice with, you know, every centerman, you know, every other winger kind of thing because it just it I mean it’s a long year and even just within a game, you know, say somebody was just out killing a penalty or, you know, two guys on that line were killing a penalty. Well, then, you know, the the third guy might get a shift with another line. You know, there’s there’s always going to be little little things like that that can that can take place, but I think where it matters most and where it makes the biggest difference is the matchup. And so then it it’s okay, what forward line are you mainly matched up against? And more importantly, what what Dairing are you matched up with? And I think that’s really where it makes the the bigger difference is when you shuffle the lines around a little bit. Okay, well these guys got the number one pair. These guys have the number two and you know all of a sudden you go from, you know, playing against the top four defenseman to, you know, the bottom two to three like on on their depth chart. So, so that I feel like that’s where it makes, you know, the the biggest difference is in the matchups. If you were a head coach, Eric Cole, would uh would you who would you want Slavven and Burns? Carolina’s I mean, Jacob Slavven is the best defensive defenseman, I believe, in the entire league. Who would you want them out against? Which Washington forward line? I would take Obie’s line for sure. I I mean, he’s the greatest goal scorer in the, you know, in the history of the game. So, I I mean, that’s that’s where I would I would lean towards. Um, that’s the way Rod’s done it. Yeah. I mean, like, for me, that’s the way that I would go with it. And and I think that, you know, I think it’s a it’s a good matchup uh for for Burnsy and and and Jacob. So, um, like I think I think that that’s, you know, I mean, you’re you want to take away a team’s biggest threat, and I know a lot of those those goals come on the power play, but, you know, those two guys aren’t taking a ton of penalties out there either. Like, I mean, like Slavven’s probably up for the Lady Bing again this year. Unfortunately, he’s not. Somehow, he didn’t get it. There is no more gentlemanly player in the league than Jacob Slay. I I don’t do I don’t even understand it. Uh but we did I I I spoke to Jacob this morning. Uh take away but we but but they’re not going to do the Lady Bang anymore. Yeah, I don’t get it. Well, he he he wasn’t a finalist. He was wasn’t one of the top three. Uh which doesn’t make any sense. Um he Jacob did joke that Burns versus Ovuchetkin because that has been an issue. Uh, I mean in terms we’ve seen it a lot. Uh, it’s like old on old. So, I thought thought that was very funny that Jacob would would phrase it that way. Um, maybe he’s working on a standup routine. There was definitely some old man strength out there uh when when Oie got that forearm shiver. I’ve been on I’ve been on the receiving end of one of those before and I I can remember you might even be able to hear it in like the audio clip where I was like just knocked knocked the wind out of me. Put me right on my butt and uh I think I got up seeing red and I just went and hit the first person I saw as hard as I could with that had the puck. I mean, Obie uh Obie has not done he has not impacted the games yet. He had one good shift that led to a great scoring chance and Freddy made the save on it, but um Obie has not yet impacted the game. It’s I mean, I’m sure it’s going to happen because he’s too good. Yeah, I just knocked on wood. I hope that you do that the same. I mean, I don’t like Don’t poke the bear. What are you doing? All right. I I get it. I get it. I mean, I I don’t believe in jinxes. Do you believe in jinxes? I believe in just kind of putting things out there into the universe. They usually happen. I understand. Eric Cole, you’re the best. I appreciate your time, my friend. Uh I will talk to you very soon. Absolutely. Sounds good. Enjoy the game tonight. You too, man. Take care. Uh, Eric Cole here on the Adam Gold
