Sixers jump to PICK #3 in NBA Draft Lottery
The Philadelphia 76ers have just just landed the third overall pick in the 2025 June NBA draft and we have to talk about it. Instant reaction alongside Derek Bodner. I’m Devon Given. This is the PHLY Sixers podcast. Derek, the theater was real as we saw. Kyle was reading out for us how you wanted it to go. You needed two teams to jump back. I mean, pardon me, to jump in. They did so and we were afraid. But as it really played out, they made it to the commercial and that’s all that mattered where they got the third overall pick. They were so close, so close to the prize in the draft next month of Cooper Flag. But they do not get it. The Dallas Mavericks finish with the top overall pick and the right to draft Cooper Flag. The San Antonio Spurs move up with the right to draft at number two and potentially we think Dylan Harper. It’s going to be very interesting with all the guards that they have there, including Dearron Fox and Stephan Castle. But for the Philadelphia 76ers, finishing with the fifth best lottery eyes due to the fifth worst record, but they are in a decent spot where they have an opportunity to draft a pretty decent young player from the collegiate pool. Yeah, you know, there’s two sort of competing emotions going on. One, there is the absolute jubilation of keeping your pick, which we have all been desperately hoping for. We were sort of taking a temperature check on whether or not if you could like be guaranteed the fifth pick with no chance of moving up, would you take it? Everyone here pretty much did so. So, you get that out of the way. That is a great outcome, right? And then you almost immediately transition to like, okay, you’re not getting one of the two prizes in this draft. What does that mean? And we recently had, you know, Kyle and I had a show on Friday where we went through our big boards. Uh, there’s going to be a lot of debate. Ace Bailey is going to be at the center of that. There’s VJ Edgecom. They sort of seem like the two most likely candidates that we would be talking about, but there’s going to be a lot of players who are going to come up. A lot of players who have, you know, skill sets that can translate to the NBA also have some concerns. There is going to be one player out of this group that we, you know, ends up turning into a major major force in the NBA. It just gets a little murkier now. You don’t know. You can’t project with as much certainty as you could with Cooper Flag or with Dylan Harper, assuming they do go one or two. Uh uh mistakes are made on draft night. They seem pretty locked in. You never know. Maybe, you know, I think Sacramento, like you mentioned, with how many guards they have is the most interesting, but still, you expect them to go one or two. Now, you have to really do your homework. Daryl Morio has had a lot of success in the draft with Tyresese Maxi, you know, with Jared McCain, even further on down with players like Paul Reed and a Demona and Justin Edwards as an undrafted done a really good job of betting on people and evaluating not only skill sets and basketball players, but evaluating people as well. And with this third pick, even though you’re going to have a chance to take somebody with an immense amount of talent and physical tools, you’re drafting a person as well. And this is where Daryl my you know, he like I said, you re rely on the track record a little bit. uh you hope that his past success indicates that he has some sort of a competitive advantage with this and being able to evaluate the people as well because it is going to come down to you know which one makes the most of their talents because everyone that you draft here like I said has an immense amount of talent and has some pretty significant flaws that’s why they are not a one or two pick. It’ll be interesting to see what he does. And the two names that will most likely be most talked about uh in this spot are Baylor’s VJ Edgecomb and Ruckers Ace Bailey. uh two different different players in every sense of the word and but two players that you know a lot of people can look at and one of the things I know I talked about with you guys and of course super producer Bri is that they while they may have a type of player like this on their roster they don’t have one at the age of 19 that you will be getting with these two players so what separates the two where you may give one edge to the other in the Sixers specific situation yeah so I Just a real quick overview of those two. You know, you’ve got Ace Bailey, 69 forward with feathery smooth shooting touch. He can shoot off the catch. He can shoot, you know, rise up and shoot over top of the defense. That’s really what he makes his um bread and butter right now. It is a borderline elite skill. Like if you look at just pure catch and shoot efficiency on contested jumpers, he was as good as anyone in this draft. You add in the fact that, like I said, he is 6’9 with good length and pretty good open court athleticism. There’s a lot to work with. There are some pretty significant flaws in his game, namely passing. Uh he had a very negative assist to turnover ratio uh with I think about 2.5 turnovers to about 1.5 assists. That is a pretty major red flag. And he also struggles to get all the way to the rim a little bit. His handle needs a lot of refinement, but there’s a lot of natural tools to work with. And then you have VJ Edgecom who’s pretty much the exact opposite. more of an offball player, you know, like 6’5 with about a 67, 68 wingspan, who’s a real good point of attack defender, like really good, one of the best in the class at doing that. He actually came out and earlier today measured, you know, a little better at the combine with a little longer arms might give him a little bit more chance to defend like a small forward spot, like a three-gard lineup that might make him a little bit more valuable. But the defense, the offball shooting, and he might be the most athletic guard in his class, so he can really get out in the open court and and and run. Um he’s, you know, his handle needs some work, his pull-up jumper needs some work. He doesn’t necessarily get to his spots off the dribble as well as you would like for a third pick, but he has that, like I said, that defense offball shooting, off ball cutting, uh, and really ability to get out in transition. Starting with Ace Bailey quickly here just because of the measurements that you alluded to. Measured out at 69 uh with with shoes uh on with the combine there in Chicago. But that’s pretty good for him all things considered due to the fact that there were a lot of concerns Derek that he might just simply be a 67 guy and that was uh listed as 610. While he’s not 610, he’s still 69. So it’s closer to that than it was that 67 that some were concerned about. Yeah. No, he he had measured in high school at like 67 without shoes. was 6’8 68 and 1/2 with shoes. He came out maybe a half inch taller than that. His measurements are okay. They’re not necessarily like six a legitimate 610 would add a little bit of intrigue, but that’s really not like part of the reason I think people obsess about the length for Ace Bailey is because him shooting over top of the defense is really his elite skill. So even just a little bit taken off at the top there people worry about. But if he can develop the way that he like add to his game in terms of ball handling, in terms of distribution, in terms of getting to the rim, then that extra inch really isn’t going to matter all that much. Uh he is, you know, like I said, he’s a a really talented prospect who has some flaws that he needs to clean up to reach the top. They all have flaws. They all have flaws. Well, before all of this played out, we all all of us said just stay in the top six. But when you’re live in the moment and it happens the way it happen number one pick, you get a little greedy and then you get a little bit of disappointment when it doesn’t happen. But look, here we are where we have an off seasonason with the Philadelphia 76ers once again will have the third overall pick and the 35th overall pick in the second round because they have that second round pick as well. So that’s going to be one that we’ll also talk about as we go along this off season. While we’re projecting and previewing these players, at some point we’re going to start to talk about some players that we may like there early in the second round. And are there players that are worth using that 35th pick to maybe move into the back end of that first round of the 2025 NBA draft? The Philadelphia 76ers once again, they win the night a little bit, but Dallas and San Antonio kind of won it bigly bigly uh for this one. But for us, a lot of good content to talk about this off seasonason now that we are at the third spot for the Sixers now on the clock. Daryl my Elton Bran and Nick Nurse to figure out the type of player that they want to select at three or maybe just maybe trade out and trade back and select a little bit on the back end and still pick up some assets. Either way, a lot for us to talk about and we will do so every day Monday through Friday at 3 PM right here on the PHLY Sixers podcast. So for Derek Bri, I’m Devon. We’ll talk to you all summer at 3 right here on the PHY6’s

Are these guys on crack?? Lol.. spurs are not taking another guard.. gonna use these picks for a trade or just get ace since they need size
Ace Bailey seems like the obvious pick to me
I prefer to get a PG with size… to move Maxey off the ball where I feel like his skills fit best. He’s been a ball handler out of need. Getting a player to get Maxey the rock in his spots would be great. A McCain/Maxey backcourt is a little small for my preference; However, Ace Bailey is the player with the best “upside”, but u can’t be too sure what happens at the top of the draft. IMO, Harper, Bailey and Tre Johnson would be my big board.
Anyone else more surprised they kept their pick than they were the NBA gave the Mavs the top pick?
Honestly I’m so fucking relieved
I don’t think they can go wrong with Ace Bailey or VJ Edgecomb!!!
We need more athleticism and they BOTH bring that!
It’s ace Bailey and I think ace is a prize as well and if it’s not ace or harper if he falls it’s a mistake
Aaaaaaaaaaa IDK
Ace is the closest thing to a PF which the Sixers definitely need. A 6'8 – 6'10 player who does everything
Glad Derrick said it. Everybody poops on Morrey but he has some strengths. I do think he is a net positive in the draft
What about Tre Johnson?
NBA is a joke of a sport. Since Silver took over it's its shambles
I would offer the third overall pick to see what we can get back hopefully couple future first round picks maybe a lot of second round idk. If Ace Bailey is there at 3 take him if not trade out IMO can’t take other guard unless they trade Maxey or McCain. 76ers need to add more youth, athleticism, and shooting. Embiid and George are two glassman they both get hurt every year so u have to add depth and youth. MOREY DO UR JOB!!
Yea mistake are def made on draft night like us taking ben and flutz and missing out on tatum
It’s Ace Bailey or bust,
Why is everyone acting like the Spurs won’t grab Ace Bailey?
Don't over-think this. Its Ace Bailey all day.
🎵The sixers will blow it 🎶 That's life 🎶🎵 excited in May and depression in June 🎵🎶
ACE BAILEY WILL BE A SIXER
Best player available, most likely ace Bailey…don’t worry about fit , fill your roster with assets and go from there. Take notes from howie rose,an and the eagles front office
Morey gonna f it up by trading something life changing for some veteran, but the no brainer is Ace…..but im a 6ers fan😢.
Bailey is the pick, positionally and as a prospect. I think I still take him if we had #2. VJ is good but idk if he’ll ever be a star.
We will have Harper… Pop won't draft a ball dominate guard… pay attention
Spurs have Fox and Castle.. they won't add another guard… Ace is their pick
Spurs already have two guards
Sixers can’t draft high ! Look at their track record !
We had Embiid and Noel with 5 lotto picks and still screwed it up !
Danny Ainge is laughing at us !!!!!
I have no faith in Nurse developing any young talent
THE SIXERS DEFINITELY NEED TO PICK ACE BAILEY AT FORWARD FOR THE NUMBER 3 PICK & MAXIME RAYNAUD AT CENTER FOR THE SECOND PICK!
Mavs got #1 as part of the deal with the NBA to trade Luka;
Spurs got #2 to help the forcing of Wemby to be the new face of the NBA;
so the Sixers got the best spot available
Edgecomb makes me nervous. You can't pick a guy that can't shoot. How many times have we learned that lesson.
Ace will be so mediocre
Ace Bailey is a horrible mover. Weak core, slow gathers, cannot separate at all. Hopefully he can hit a Trey Murphy type ceiling but not sure I see it. Outside of Flagg/Harper all draft prospects are sus and bad fits. Maybe we can trade up or down.
Paul George and the third pick for the number two pick and Harrison Barns and Keldon Johnson and Blake Wesley.
Miss listening to Devon late nights no one covers the Sixers like him
ACE
Package the pick for Greek Freak
