a whole bunch of different positions. You’re not playing every day, but when you’re out there, you have to be at your best. You know, it’s diff it’s difficult, right? It’s difficult mentally, but you need to learn how to dominate that. And if you’re able to dominate that, you’re able to succeed. But if you don’t, then you’re going to be thinking about why am I not being put in or man, I haven’t played as much. But but you’re able once you’re able to dominate that, you’re able to push forward with that, right? The difference, one of the main differences from the Marlins to here is there there’s a lot of of veterans here, right? There’s there’s a lot of a veteran big veteran presence. So like you help each other out. You are one team. It’s not just one individual yourself. So it is difficult mentally, but once you’re able to overcome that and and and master that, so to speak, then you’re able to to progress forward and and go about it. In the majors, who’s had the biggest influence on your career? There’s a lot of players, right? It is time now to hear from manager Craig Council sponsored by the village of New Lennox. Here’s K. We’ve talked a lot and everybody has talked a lot in baseball about your schedule and about how difficult it was first, let’s say, month and a half. When you look back at where you’re at now, you just came home from New York, played a very good New York team, Giants. I mean, there’s been you’ve been lined up. You’re in first place. Where do you think you feel or how do you think you feel about your club after this tough month and a half schedule? Well, yeah. Yeah, I mean I think you know we’re five games above 500. Um I think you know you’re you’re pleased at that. Um you know there’s games that you’re like you know always probably some games we should have lost that we won. Um but it’s it’s just where we’re at right now. Um I think the schedule is is tricky. It doesn’t the playing a hard schedule. That’s a fact. We we’ve played some of the good teams. You can’t deny that. I think it doesn’t help you win games going forward. Um, but you know, when you play, I think we saw this yesterday is a great example, like you play a team like the Mets, like you got to play a really good game to beat them. Um, they’re they’re going to hang with you and hang with you and then, you know, some of their great players did something good late in the game. So, it’s tough to beat like, you know, you play a team like the Marlins and there’s there’s just not that player on the team. Um, so you hope that gives you a little bit of some soft spots, but you still got to go out and beat them and you still got to execute and you still got to play well. Um, and that is the challenge that lays in front of us. So, um, I think, you know, a little of it is, you know, I think we believe if we continue to play in the manner we’ve played the first 40 games that there’s going to be wins. Um, and I think that’s true because I think we have played pretty darn well. Um, and but but we got to go out and do it. So when you look back at this last month and a half then to back to just what you said, when you look back at your group, what are the things that you go, “Wow, that’s been really good and we’re we continue that. We’re going to win a lot of baseball games. We just know that because we’ve been in our game a long time.” Yeah, I think the production throughout the lineup has been a big deal. Um, that that’s number one. um not counting on one player um to to be the offensive, you know, carrier. Um I think our starting pitching um has been very solid. Uh we’re going to need to continue that. Absolutely. Um they they’ve they’ve really done a nice job and and with some with some injuries obviously. Um and then we got to get better in the bullpen. you know, we’ve we’ve had some really good things happen in the bullpen and we’ve had some struggles in the bullpen and I think um you know, just consistency there. You’re not going to win every game you hand the ball to your bullpen. I think sometimes that’s a misnomer in the game. Like yesterday’s game, we we got three hits. I mean, that’s that’s the story of the game yesterday. Um so, but we have to be, you know, consistent down there and and the winnable games, you know, we got to make sure we we close them out. You talked about your starting pitching, a guy that did was not in your rotation to start the season in Ray, but when you look back at his numbers, he I mean, wow, he’s given you a lot. And you know him, you’ve you’ve managed him before, um, your thoughts on him today and now this Marlin series. Well, I think what you know, we signed Colin for in the off season is essentially what has come to fruition with him. Um, and you know, you you’re hoping that you don’t need him in the rotation, but you know that you’re going to need him in the rotation. And so, and he’s hand and he’s handled that really really well and and delivered with some really good starts. So, you know, he he’s we’re going to need him for the foreseeable future in the rotation here and um that means uh we’re handing the ball to him every fifth day and and I think he’s proven he can handle that. Coming back here now, the Marlins are in town. They’re a very young team, but they, you know, those sometimes can be the most dangerous because every guy out there is trying to make a name for himself and stay in the big leagues for that matter. Um, your thoughts on this series in particular? Yeah, I mean, I think against uh this particular team, it’s they they there’s some things they do well um and so we just we have to execute. I think um from a hitting perspective, we just we got to stay in the strike zone. Um there there’s some stuff and we just got to make sure we don’t chase the stuff and make make them make the next pitch. Um and then the good offensive teams kind of do that whether it’s a foul ball. You know, I thought that Jeff McNeel leading off against Porter Hodgej on Saturday night was a great example of a hitter making a pitcher throw a couple more pitches and then he gets a walk. Um and that’s what a good a good solid hitter does is that you just foul off some of the good pitches and then you get a ball, right? So that’s I think offensively the key. And then from a pitching perspective, um, you know, we we got to attack. I mean, it it doesn’t this is what doesn’t change. I think just being on the attack, limiting free passes, um, is is really important. Um, we have enough stuff that plays in the zone, so we’ve got to be on the attack. Good luck this week against Florida. Thanks. That’s manager show. Craig Council, Zack, back to you. The baseball board next on the score in the Southwest Airlines Cubs Radio Network. And he he you know he passed with flying colors. He was outstanding and it was really nice to see him get the W. We are ready for baseball. We’ll get the Cubs lineup to you momentarily. Colin Ray, the right-hander, fires to Xavier Edwards. The pitch is high and away we go. Edwards hitting 259. Pete Crow Armstrong will bat lead off for the Cubs in center. Kyle Tucker in right and Seya Suzuki in left. The 10 is lifted toward left center. playable for Keith Ro Armstrong drifting back onto the track, makes the catch for out number one. The rest of the Cubs lineup looks like this. Michael Bush, the cleanup man at first. Carson Kelly, the DH, Nicoer batting sixth and playing second base. Dansby Swanson is the short stop. The catcher in the number eight spot is Miguel Amaya. And John Birdie batting ninth and playing at the hot corner. One away, just underway. The batter Jesus Sanchez, a left-handed hitter, takes a strike, Ronnie, as you think about Colin Ray facing these Marlins. What’s on your mind? I think it, you know, whenever you talk about Ray and his pitching as a starter, it’s all about command of his fast ball outside oneonone. He does such a nice job of pitching on the edges of the zone and his command is great, you know, right on that, you know, from the top to the bottom. He can pitch on both sides of the plate. And boy, when he is on them, it just makes it so tough with the secondary pitches to lay off of them because they come out looking like the fast ball. He misses outside. Two and one on Chz. Both teams lost two out of three over the weekend. The Cubs in New York against the Mets. Here’s a little chopper foul up along first. Two and two. And the Marlins were on the on the south side at Guaranteed Rate Field playing the White Socks and they lost two out of three. First meetings of the year between the two teams. Sanchez hitting 213. Left-handed batter waiting. Colin Ray fires 22. Little lighter shallow left. Falling in for a base hit. Soft line drive in front of Suzuki in left. And Sanchez likes to run. That’s one thing the Marlins will do. They’ve got a couple of guys, the first two in their order, Edwards and Sanchez. You’ve got to be aware cuz they’ll try to steal bags. Yeah, they will. And pretty nice piece of hitting too by Sanchez. He got that pitch. It’s down and away. Didn’t try to hook it or do too much with it. Just served it the other way. Pretty nice piece of Augustine Ramirez the batter. He’ll take a strike. He’s got bright blue shoes. Ramirez hitting 262. Gets some power. Four home runs. He’s driven in nine. The Marlins are not a strong team at the point at the moment. At this point, they are 15 and 24. Swinging a foul off to the right out of play. And that brings to mind, Ron, the the schedule for the Cubs. You always have to be careful when you talk about playing teams with losing records because you’re not going to win every single game. Here comes the O2 from Ray and it’s fouled away. But the fact is that this series begins a stretch for the Cubs of playing seven straight series all against teams that currently have losing records. Yeah. And you know, you look at you can’t help but look at the schedule and see the disparity and and you know that this first month and a half and all the quality teams and playoff teams the Cubs were playing. So first diving back in safely as Sanchez and you get through that stretch to your point and you’re you know would you take that if you were to say that in spring you’re five games over 500 and you’re in first place. Would you take that and you’re two games up in first place? Yes, you would. I think anyone would say yes to that question. I agree. Now you look at the schedule and you go, okay, to your point, you’re going to play these this group now, you know, for the next month and you’re going to play teams under 500. Now you’ve you’ve got to play good baseball here. But it, as you just said, it does not mean you’re going to win night after night. The one two bounced toward the middle glove by her goes to Swanson. One running through to first. Got him. What a double play. Poetry in motion. 463. Beautifully done by Nicoer, Dansby Swanson, and Michael Bush at the end. 463. Ron, I know you always scout the opposing starting pitcher. What’s the plan of attack for the Cubs hitters? Well, Cal Quantrol is a guy that’s going to mix in all the pitches. Fast ball, curveball, slider, split. The next pitch, swing and a miss. One and two. And to me, the key is getting him into the zone. If you don’t chase, you’ve got a good chance. The league is hitting well over 300 against him. And if you The Dodgers had some issues in his last start against him, and he threw pretty well. Pete walking back to the dugout, turned around and asked Manny Gonzalez and he’s been doing that a little bit here lately. The last few days I’ve noticed asking the umpire falsy strikes, did I swing it a strike or not? That last pitch is well up out of the zone. Tucker left-handed batter with power. He’ll take a strike. Tucker’s average down to 269. And I say down, that’s not a terrible average, but it was well over 300 for most of the first few weeks. A little bit of a slump here. Here comes the 01. And he’ll take down low. In his last 16 games, Tucker hitting just 183. But uh in a long season, Ron, every single hitter will go through those. Yeah, you’re going to have your ups and downs. There’s no doubt. Tuck’s going to end up with probably 650 plate appearances by the time the season’s over. You will have some good and some bad. There’s no doubt. No score first inning. Miami in their gray shirts and trousers, black hats and socks. Liner toward right, diving stopped by Simon from a knee. Throws to first in time. The second baseman Simon made a very nice play. Ronnie Simon took a base hit away from Kyle Tucker. Two downs. Yeah, I think this ball Simon was not expecting this ball to get to him as quick as it did and then all of a sudden he had to really get to this ball and kind of dive out towards right field and kind of change his angle a little bit, but he does love it cleanly and made what turned out to be a nice play. No score first inning. Seya Suzuki takes inside. Seya, another guy slumping a little bit in his last 11 games, hitting 125. His RBI totals are healthy though, 32. Here comes the 10. And that’s going to be down low for a ball at this first inning. It’s powered by Invesco QQQ. Let’s rethink possibility. Invesco distributors incororated. Tonight, Ron playing game number 42. So they’ve passed the one quarter hole of the season, a swing in a mess, two and one. So if you want to see what kind of a pace a certain hitter is on, you just multiply by four what his numbers are right now. For example, both Tucker and Suzuki with 32 RBI’s. They’re both on a pace to drive in 128. Probably unsustainable for two guys to do that on the same team hitting back to back in the order, but you never know. You’d sure take that. Absolutely. Now the 3-1 to Suzuki fouled away. Three and two. Montrosra 7.11. when you were a ball player, Ron, were there some guys you knew he was a big league pitcher, but you saw that 7.11 and you think that that can’t really be. He’s he’s a major league pitcher. He’s got to be better than that. Yeah, absolutely. And you just go, what’s what’s going on? Swinging a foul back three. And that’s when you try to start digging deeper into the scouting report of what what’s happening? Why why is this happening? you know, and and you start evaluating his pitches and then what he’s doing and who he’s giving up these runs to and you start really digging into it. The 3-2 from Quantrell to Suzuki Seya nubs it foul right off the end of the bat. There are guys you would face, you’d go, “This guy’s nasty. He just really he’s got a great arm and good but he would always end up throwing one or two pitches in the at bat right down the middle. good pitches to hit and he would give up runs and you’re just like, you know, you didn’t understand it, but you you sure hit him. Swinging a popup foul might be playable for the third baseman Paulie or the catcher. They collide and Paulie, the third baseman, makes the catch. The catcher fell down. It was a mild collision. Although mild from my standpoint, I’m looking down at Paulie. He’s uh maybe feeling like mild is not the exact word he would use. He did make the catch. They are walking off at Let’s see if you can figure out the following baseball slang term. Next phrase is oppo taco. Do you know what it means? Oppo taco. A home run hit to the opposite field. First time they’ve lost back-to- back series all year to the Giants here and then in New York to the Mets. Dropping two out of three. See if they can get things turned around on this home stand. Pass ball is high. Yeah, those both of those series you could say, you know, that not that the Cubs let games slip away, but you felt like both of those series you could have won. Bush takes inside for a some close games. Absolutely. Yeah. you know, one game on each series, you know, for both teams was kind of a, you know, a pretty easy win. And then the the other two games in those series were, you know, where were good ball games could have went either way. Swinging a high fly ball right center field deep back goes Sanchez near the warning track on the track makes the catch. Bush gave it a ride, but it just did not have enough to leave the yard. It’s out number one. Scoreless game. Second inning. And the batter Carson Kelly. That’s a little cutter right down the middle at the knees. I mean, it’s center cut. Pushy. The only reason this ball doesn’t go out of the ballpark is I think he was just out in front just enough to where he didn’t hit right through the ball, but it hit right on the barrel. You might remember it was the first week of the regular season in Sacramento that he hit for the cycle and he did it in very dramatic fashion getting the triple in his last atbat. That’s always the one you need, right? The triple is always the most elusive. And he got it. Here’s the one-two pitch. A little soft liner to third caught by Paulie and that’s out number two. But sometimes you wonder when a guy has that kind of a a magical night, what does that do for his confidence? Absolutely. Nico Horn of the batter. Nico takes a strike from Quantril. Nico hitting a sturdy 281. He gets on. He might steal a bag in a spot like this. He drives on in the air. Deep center field. Pat Derek Hill, right-handed batting center fielder, will take a strike. We are in the top of the third. Nice crowd at Wrigley. We’re going to make our guesses in the Benny’s Beverage Depot attendance game as we move along. If you can’t find it at Benny’s, here’s a broken bat bouncer to short fielded by Swanson. Throws to first in time. The barrel shattered and flew over the head of Colin Ray. He saw it, so he was never in any real danger, but it had to be a little frightening to see that uh barrel with the jagged edge flying over your head. Well, the crazy part is you see two two objects coming at you. One’s a baseball coming just off to your right and then that the helicopter of the barrel of the bat going over your head. Which way do you go? Liam Hicks, the batter, no score. Third inning. Hicks will take outside, but if you can’t find it at Benny’s, it’s probably not worth drinking. I see a few empty seats. Not many in the upper deck. I think we have more than 30 here. The 10 fast ball outside ball two. I’ll go with 30,03. Hicks hitting 254, three home runs, left-handed batter, and he’ll take the strike. Two and one. I will say 32,000. Lights are on. Still some daylight left. There’s a few clouds in the sky, but nothing threatening. Only a slight chance for any shower or rain later on. Here’s the 2-1. That’s going to be a strike two and two. I’m going to go 32,500. And our engineer, the maestro, Paul Zarang, going with 29,222. Okay, we’re locked in. The Benny’s Beverage Depot attendance game. The 2-2 pitch is outside to Hicks. Three and two. Split four at Wrigley a year ago against these Marlins and beat them two out of three in August. Liner to right falling in front of Tucker for a base hit. On the 3-2 delivery, Hicks collects a one out single. Second hit for Miami. Nothing nothing game with a man on. One away. The batter is Graham Paulie. Pitch down in the zone. Down and in. And to put a charge into that little top spin line drive right in front of Tucker and right. A little more green Ivy has blossomed on the outfield walls. Looking better and better every time the Cubs come home. Molly takes a strike. I would say it’s about 90% coverage right now. It’s not as full regarding the ivy, but it it’s coming. Another another month or so, it’ll be completely green and full and beautiful. Well, here comes the 01 to Paulie. Stroke fouled off to the left and out of play. The White Socks are here this weekend. Three straight night games against Miami tonight, tomorrow night, and Wednesday evening. All three beginning at 6:40 and then three straight day games starting on Friday at 1:20. Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Cubs and White Socks. Breaking ball just missed. One and two. A good pitch by Ray. That one just below the zone. Good hook. Back door hook. White Socks beat these Marlins over the weekend on the south side. Two out of three. Now the one two just outside. Was reading about their win yesterday. Youngster for the Socks, Tim Elco, with his first big league hit. It was a game-winning three-run homer against Sandy Alcantra. How about that? There’s a high popfly shallow right backpedaling and calling us for her. Easy play for Nico. And that’s going to be out number two. Something tells me, Ron, when you hit a home run for your first hit against a former Sai Young award winner and it’s a game winner that you will never forget your first big league hit. I I don’t even know what to say to that other than I think you’re right. Yeah, he had a three-run homer in the middle of the game. I think it was the fifth or sixth inning. The Socks went on to beat these Marlins 4-2. Here’s the stretch by Colin Ray and the pitch to Xavier Edwards and it’s in for a strike. And by the way, you’re going to hear that name Sandy Alcantra a lot as you get close to the trading deadline, although he has not pitched well this season. He is a former SA Young Award winner. Here’s the 01. It’s outside for a ball. But right now, his erra is Let’s see. I wrote it down. It’s in the mid fours, I believe. But and his record is two and five. So, he has not been overly effective. No, but he’s he’s a guy with a big arm, great stuff. He’s got good track record. You know, he’s going to be a guy that teams are if he’s healthy, that’ll be the determining factor. Drive into the first base dugout, everyone’s okay. That’s where you’re really happy you got those nets right over the dugout. Mhm. Hit that netting and then went down into the dugout. But that would have went in the first or second row. That would have been dangerous. Did you ever get nailed while sitting on the bench by a foul ball? I get hit in the leg once pretty bad. You know, nothing that I took me out of any games, but you’re that close. There’s sometimes just you can’t get out of the way. Mhm. Do you remember who hit it? I do not. It was a minor league guy in the minor leagues. Now the one two to Xavier Edwards is outside. Two and two. No score. Top of the third. Two down, a two and two count on Xavier Edwards. Keep an eye on the runner Hicks at first. It’s not a Steelers lead and the 2-2. Hicks is not running. Just a bit outside. Ray thought he had him. Took a step toward the Cubs third base dugout. In fact, see it again, Ron. Excellent pitch. slow back door hook, but you know, it’s one of those pitches that it might have, if it missed, it missed by the width of the seam of the baseball. That’s about it. Ground ball right side. Tough play. Diving stop. Nope. It’s past a diving hero. Base hit to right. Hicks will go to third. It’s a single for Edwards. I thought Nico was going to get a glove on it. It may have hit the lip where the dirt meets the grass and the ball jumped a little bit over the glove of a diving Nicoer. Yeah, Nico lays out for this ball and he gets to it and I think it does bounce up and it hits him in the thumb of the glove as his hand is going out. So, it just bounces up over the top of his glove while he’s diving and ends up in right field. Now, two men on. Jesus Sanchez steps in. First time either team has had a man in scoring position in the game. Spoilerless game in the third. Threw to first and they got him picked off. What a pickoff move by Colin Ray. Michael Bush took it. Slapped the tag on the head first diving Xavier Edwards. And the inning comes to an end. Big pickoff play. Your day in baseball starts with MLB Central. Let’s get it started. Pat Dansby Swanson first up takes inside from Cal Quantril. Nothing nothing game. We are in the bottom of the third. Gansby hitting 242. The pitch swinging a foul back. Miguel Amaya on deck and then John Birdie. It was a bit surprising Ron to see an inning end with a guy getting picked off with men say first and third. Yeah, that’s that’s one of those things you can’t have that happen. You got your number two hole hitter up. You got you flip the lineup over. You can’t get picked off first base there. Xavier Edwards hung out to dry. Good quick move by Colin Ray. That move is made by Colin Ray’s feet. He has very quick feet in that pickoff move and a very short arm swing. Great, great move. One two pitch bounces in there. The catcher Hicks tried to bail out. He did and I think Gonzalez took the blunt of it. Manny Gonzalez the homeplayed umpire. Okay, that’ll cost you. Wait till he’s come to the bat next time. Except I thought you were going to protect me. I I guess I thought wrong. Running away with all the gear on. Let’s see if Dansby can start a rally. The two- two pitch on the way. Little bouncer foul at the plate. And we’re coming to you live all season long from the QQQ broadcast booth. Proud ETF partner of the Chicago Cubs. Lights beginning to have a little bit of an effect. Still plenty of daylight left. Day is getting longer and longer now. You’re getting into the middle of May. Here’s the 2-2. Cracked line drive. Diving catch by Paulie at third base. Excellent catch by him. Paulie lunging and diving to his left. Took a base hit away from Dansby Swanson. Nice play. I don’t know if Danby can hit a ball any harder than he just hit it. And this is that one’s got the old Superman cape on the end of that one. He caught that one in full extension on the dive and up. Great play by Paulie. One away. No score. Miguel Amaya the batter. Miguel loops one down the left field line racing over Sters. That’s going to be a fair ball base hit. And Amaya going for two. There’s going to be a play. The throw, the slide. No, he didn’t slide. He goes in standing up with a double. I thought he might have wanted to slide. See if the Marlins are going to challenge that play. The second baseman, Simon, thought he tagged him. Apparently, he’s pointing into the dugout. And let’s see if Miami challenges that safe call at second base. I don’t think they’re going to challenge. And this is one of those plays where Maya I didn’t I think felt like he was going to beat this a little more than he did. But he ends up running into the bag. Does not slide and gets to the bag. He does beat the play but not by a lot. John Birdie the batter. It is a double. No challenge. Two base hit for Amaya. Let’s see if Birdie can drive in the game’s first run. Maya the Cubs first base runner of the game with one away here in the third. Now the pitch to Birdie. That’s in for a strike. Birdie spent some time with Miami. So here’s another case of a guy hoping to do well against his former organization. Short lead by Amaya wearing red batting gloves. Red base running glove on his right hand. Got a blue glove on his left hand. That’s an old Cubs trick play there. Yeah. One blue, one red. He’s just being very patriotic, right? He really is. White uni. Yeah. Here’s a broken bat line drive caught by the second baseman, Simon. You could see a little splinter leave the bat of John Birdie. And that’s out number two. No score. Here’s Pete Crow Armstrong. I was looking at a note, Ron. There are three big league ball players at this stage that have at least 10 home runs and 10 stolen bases each. Pete Pro Armstrong, Kyle Tucker, and Show Otani. Good group to be in if you’re Petro Armstrong, right? Absolutely. Now Pete Pro Armstrong batting against Quantril. Now I’m looking at the third baseman Paulie Run. He’s playing shallow, but this is a spot where if you’re Cro Armstrong, you’re trying to drive this run in, aren’t you? Look at Hill in center field how shallow he is. Wow. Playing like it’s the ninth inning and there, you know, a sacrifice fly. You got to play in. I’ve never seen a center fielder play that shallow in the middle of a ball game like this against a guy with real power. He needs to turn around and look at the scoreboard. He might be the leadoff hitter, but he’s also one of the league leaders in home runs. For Armstrong struck out his first time. He hits one in the air, foul. As I was thinking about Miami being the opposition, I thought back to his inside the park home run in Miami last August. Yeah. Still a great memory. Just the absolute speed of a human being going from home all the way around the bases. It’s fast fastest I’ve ever seen a guy circle the base. Here’s the 1-1. Armstrong takes outside. Two and one. He is, you know, I really there’s no way to really find out who the fastest guy is in Major League Baseball right now, but you wouldn’t bet against him, would you? Here’s the 2-1. Petro Armstrong takes high. And and thinking back, Ron, you remember the right fielder made a lunging try for it and it went past him. And as soon as it went past him and kicked kind of out toward right center, I knew he was going to try to go all the way. Yeah, I agree. Didn’t you? Absolutely. Yeah. Here’s the 3-1 now to Pete. And that’s in there for a strike. Three and two. Good take actually by Peter Armstrong. Borderline strike up and outside. Good call by Manny Gonzalez and hit the strike zone. I’m not getting on him, but it it’s a good take. That’s not a pitch you want to swing at on three and one. Scoreless game. Two down, a man at second now. Tom called. I’m called by Pete Crow Armstrong. Three balls in two strikes. Center fielder Hill and the right fielder Sanchez. Extremely shallow. And the 3-2. It’s high for ball four. And I when I say shallow, I mean that’s their positioning, not their personalities. You understand that? I didn’t. Yeah. Maybe you knew them better than, you know, maybe most people thought, but yeah, I I just didn’t know. Two outs, two on for Kyle Tucker. And the outfielders back up a little bit. Same home run numbers. I don’t know why they’re not playing way in. Come on back in there, guys. This would be a good time for Tucker to break out of his little slide. Scoreless game. Two men on. Third inning, two outs. Robbed on a good play by the second baseman Simon in the first. Stretched by Quantrell. The pitch. That was a strike. Second time he started him with a fast ball strike taken each time by Kyle 0 and one me of the order presented by chef IQ sense never under overcook your food again purchase now at chef IQ.com runners take their leads Tucker takes outside one and one okay you were in a few slumps in your career run did you have any little thing you would talk to yourself about or prepare what would you Well, first thing I would do when I if I wasn’t squaring the ball up regularly is I would really focus on tracking the baseball with my eyes and tracking it to the barrel of the bat. Tucker swings and fouls it one and two. So I like in batting practice and everything, I would really be overemphasize. I’d hit the ball in batting practice and not track where the ball went. just keeping your eyes at the contact point so you really focus on seeing the baseball and then you want that same carryover effect into the game. The other thing I would do is I usually start using the other side of the field a little more swinging a fly ball to left. It’s playable for Sters and the left-handed left fielder makes the catch and the Cubs do not score. They get a double and a walk but walk away empty-handed. We move to inning number four. Nothing nothing. Let’s see if we can figure out the following baseball slang term. Next phrase is oppo taco. Do you know what it means? Oppo taco. I couldn’t. Oh, I would agree. And one of your former teams, the Minnesota Twins, they’ve also won eight straight games. There’s a line drive down the right field line. That’s going to be a fair ball bouncing against the sidewall. There’s going to be a play and holding it first is Sters. He saw Tucker play the g play the carum very skillfully and quickly and he held him to a single. Good play. Well, and and part of this play, Tucker goes in and gets to this ball and instead of roll turning inside and throwing, he got his body around and it, you know, it took him a little bit more to turn his body that way, but then his throwing, the action for him to throw to second base is much stronger and he threw a bullet right to Nico. And excellent play by Tucker and Wright. Matt Mervvis struck out his first time. He takes inside. Short lead at first by Stard. It’s not a Steelers lead. He is being held by Bush. The pitch by Ray to Murvvis. A high fly ball into right center. Playable for either Tucker or Cro Armstrong. It’ll be Tucker to make the catch and the Marlins do not score. Four shutout innings for Colin Ray. Let’s see if the Cubs can get him some runs as we go to the bottom of the fourth. Nothing nothing game on the score. Judge tied with Kyle Schwarber for the home run lead, each with 14. Judge the RBI leader with 39. Judge also the on base percentage slugging OPS and hits leader in the majors Pat. What’s his current batting average? 409. Very healthy. Sea Suzuki leads it off. Look out. Takes inside right near the left shoulder. He ducked out of there and bailed out. Who can blame him? Yeah, that one’s definitely the high and tight. There’s no doubt this fast ball gets away from Quantrol and it’s Buzz them up and in. Molly and Hall talk Cubs baseball and Chicago sports every weekday morning from 5:30 to 10 on 67 score in the Odyssey app. I’ll be with them Friday morning and I’ll be in studio with them Friday morning. They got a little a little but they got a thing going with our station at the you know the Cross Town Classic that weekend kicking off on Friday. So I’ll be in with Mike, David, Dustin, Alex, all those guys. So it’ll be fun morning. Suzuki takes outside Friday. A big day for you, Ron. You’ve got that event in the morning. There’s the ball game, the Cubs and the White Socks here at 120. And then after the game, Cub fans might want to head to Kum’s Corner in Lockport and enjoy Yingling Game Day bucket specials for $12 each. You could also, it says here, score some Yingling swag. Plus live music later that night. I’m not sure if Ron’s going to be doing the singing. No. The guy singing on Friday night at our place will be Johnny Vincent. John Vincent. Yeah. Johnny. That’s even better. Much better. Yeah. Yeah. I’ll be be I’ll be the background singer from way in the back. Like in the back of the house, you know? Maybe when John takes a break, you can get up and belt out Sinatra’s famous song, My Way. Yeah. Uh, I would I would hope that would get recorded so we could all enjoy it later. We’re going to call it John’s way and he’ll be the one singing it. Yep. Suzuki at first. Michael Bush the batter. That’s a high pop fly and a shallow right coming in as Sanchez and he will make the catch. One down. Suzuki at first after he walked. Scoreless game. The batter is Carson Kelly. That’s another near miss. Michael Bush has hit two right on the barrel and hit him a mile in the air. Two near misses for Michael. Seya at first being looked back to the bag by Quantril. The stretch by the right-hander and the pitch to Kelly is in there for a strike. Talking about the Cardinals being hot. Actually, the whole division kind of tightening up here late. The Cubs are in first by a game over St. Louis, three over Milwaukee, three and a half over Cincinnati. Only the Pirates are out of the picture at the moment. Nine games in a rears. That’s coming off back-to- back series losses for the first time this year. Two good teams, the Giants and the Mets. Here’s the stretch for the 1-1. Throw to first diving back in Suzuki. Well, that’s the second throw over. So now Quantrol can’t throw over unless he picks him off. It’s Bookie with a little better lead now at first. Kelly lined out to third his first time. The pitch to Carson is outside about two and one. That’s always been a popular hit and run count. Let’s see if the Cubs have something in the works on this pitch. I would say yes. It looks like Suzuki’s out there pretty good. He’s not going. And a pitch taken for a strike. Two and two. Yep. Right down the middle. Kelly didn’t pull the trigger on that one. What are some of the reasons, Ron, why two and one has been a popular hit and run count? Well, the pitcher you you you you’re guessing that the pitcher does not want to go to three and one and get way behind in the count, right? So, you know, the pitcher’s going to be on the attack. And if your hitter can handle the bat thumb, the runner goes. The pitch hit in the air to right. Playable for Sanchez. Suzuki was 2/3 of the way to second. Now has to backpedal and retreat to first. Two down. No score. Fourth inning. The batter Nicoer. Y I’m going to guess that something got mixed up in signals on that 2-1 pitch. That’s that’s my guess. I I think count I I’m not sure what happened, but Suzuki didn’t go and Tucker or and Kelly took the ball right down the middle. And that did look a little odd. There’s Nico taking inside. Warner drove one to the warning track in center. It was hauled in by Hill. Nico very steady. 279 average. gives you good effort defensively at second every day. Here comes the 10. Nico takes loan in. He’ll take his walks. He’s always a hustling player and I appreciate that quality in any ball player. Yeah, there’s no doubt. Nico is outstanding player. Very good. And we got a little equipment issue here. I think Hicks, the catcher, broke his pocket of his glove. The strings in his pocket and he’ll get a new glove as he comes back behind the plate. Suzuki at first, two balls, no strikes. Zuki’s designated hitter. They’re sponsored by BBQ Authority. Visit BBQ Authority in Lyall. This might be a time for the runner to go two and 0. Wouldn’t think he’d want to go three and 0 on a spot like this. It might be a hitable pitch. Well, and I think the guy that handles the bat the best on your team is at home plate. The stretch by Quantril and the two pitch. Nico taking a strike. Suzuki not running. He bluffed like he was going to go. Oh, he took a jab step and then shut it down. Poncho very slow to the plate. I’m I’m really surprised Suzuki has not gone. There he goes. The pitch taken for a strike. Throw it to second base. The tag out at second base. A one hop throw. Simon, the second baseman, gloved it, made a quick tag. And let’s see if the Cubs are going to challenge that call or not. I don’t think they will. And they will not. Inning over. Score that one two to four on the clock. Stealing. Zack Sman joins Ronkumer in a moment. At the end of four, nothing nothing game between the Cubs and Miami on the score. Two and one. The Cubs have had some near misses. A lot of high fly balls. Couple by Bushy. line drive off the bat of Dansby that third baseman made a very nice play on calling time call by the batter Hill steps out of the box now digs in upright stance very little bend at the knees as Ray works his motion the 2-1 foul out of play off to the right two and two I tell you, Colin Ray has had great, not good, great command of his pitches tonight. Everything he throws is right at the edges of the strike zone. Here’s the 2-2 swing and a miss. Strike three. Got him with a slider. Hills retired. Two away. Third punch out of the game for Colin Ray. And I I’m telling you, he’s he’s just made some great pitches. This is the perfect slider. It starts out in the zone, stays in the zone, all the way to home plate, and then just fades off the outside corner. Excellent pitch. Strikeouts by Cubs Pitches brought to you by your Chicago and Northwest Indiana Hyundai dealer. So he walks halfway up to the mound to hand Colin Ray a new baseball. Ray spends some time talking to the umpire to give him some extra time to recover. And now Gonzalez dusting off home plate. He gets a chance to recollect. And now we’re ready for the resumption of play. 0 and2 the count on the batter Hicks. Grace sets at the belt. And now the pitch. A bouncing ball hit to second. I’ve been down there obviously not much during the game, but right after the game I’ll go down and meet some friends down there and it is really nice and our hosts of the suits, they’re awesome. Elite. They are very good. Funny. They have a great time down there. Line drive smoke to left. It’ll drop in in front of Scour for a base hit. A quick start to the fifth inning for the Cubs. Nico her extends his hitting streak to seven with a hard hit single to left. Great swing by Nico. Just drops ahead of the bat down on this ball and hooks it into left field. Got the head out on that one. And now the Cubs need to get a little action going. Would not surprise me with the way things have gone so far in this game for council to start doing some things to try to jumpst start the offense a little bit. Nico has the Steelers lead. Dansby Swanson at the plate looks at a ball low and outside. One and0. Warner was obviously not going. Warner’s former teammate Matt Mvvis holding him on at first. Montrol peers in, gets the sign from his catcher Hicks. He’s ready. Here’s the pitch outside. Two and0. You’d love to see Dansby get a good pitch to hit here. He smoked one at the third baseman Paulie in his last at bat. Really can’t hit it any harder than that. See if he gets a good fast ball. This one could go a long way. The pitch. Oh, strike on the outside corner. Two and one. Did not get the fast ball. Got a cutter and Pontrol threw a perfect pitch. Two and0. Painted the outside corner at the Denise. Monson hitting better than 400 over his last 12 games. He waits for the 2-1. Nope. First to throw to first. Nico gets back standing up. Gansy’s really taken off since moving down in the order. Initially, he was hitting eighth. Now batting seventh tonight. Quantrol sets at the belt. Nico goes. Here’s the pitch. It’s a ball outside. They’ll throw to second. Nowhere near in time. Head first slide by her and a stolen base. That’s number eight on the year for Nico. Well, Nico kind of bouncing around over there at first base and gets a huge jump as he hops, hops, and goes and Control did not see him with the first hop and then Nico just takes off. No chance to throw him out at second. Stolen bases. There’s another one. Another Cub Steel. Steels are powered by a Turo tire. Very nice jump. Now her in scoring position. The 3-1 to Swanson. High five ball deep left center field. Still going way back there. Gone. Strike first. A two-run home run halfway up the bleachers in left center field by Dansby Swanson. His ninth of the year. And the Cubs up two to nothing over the Marlins here in the fifth. Uh, Poncho made a great pitch on two and0. A cutter down and away and hit the corner. And then Nico takes off for second. Gansby ends up going to three and one. And he throws a 90. They said this a 91 mph split finger. I’m not quite sure that that was split. Whatever it did, it went right into the barrel and it certainly didn’t sink. And Dansby hit that ball a mile right at the scoreboard and left. So now Miguel stands in. Still nobody out here in the fifth. Cubs up two to nothing. The pitch is low and outside for ball one. A 400 and a 400 ft drive for Swanson. Exit velocity 108 mph. Another hefty hefty hefty home run. Official trash bag of the Chicago Cubs. Hefty strength that’s anything but ordinary. Amaya looks at a strike from Quantrol. A fast ball. One and one. You looked at kind of what Quantrol does as a pitcher and earlier today, you know, you just start matching up. Who you think has a good is a good matchup against Quantrol. Amaya pulls one past third and past the diving Paulie into left field for a big hit. This will roll all the way to the corner. Amaya gets to second base standing up with a double. His second of the ball game. Well, Amaya’s figured it out. and he hooks two balls down the left field line for back-to- back doubles for him. But a lot of Quantrol’s pitches fade in to the right-handed hitter and that’s exactly what that last pitch did to Dansby and he hit it a mile. Yeah, you circled Dansby’s name before the game because of just that. Yeah, you knew this was going to be a good matchup for him, especially if Quantrol was getting behind in the count, which he did. John Birdie looks at a ball inside. A sinking fast ball that missed. One and0 the count. Still no one out here in the bottom of the fifth inning. Cubs with a two nothing lead and looking for more. Amaya at second base. Birdie lined out to second in his first atbat. And the pitch line drive. Oh, a leaping grab at first by Matt Mvvis. One away as Birdies retired. That’s when you know that’s you know there’s luck involved in baseball. Good or bad, Birdie does everything right and scalds this ball and MVvis makes a great leaping catch at first base. You can’t do it any better than Birdie just did. And looks like that’s going to be all for Cal Quantro. Clayton McCulla, the first year manager of the Marlins is going to make a pitching change. Leftander Anthony Veniano is the new man on the bound for the Marlins. Pro Armstrong digs in for the Cubs. We’re in the bottom half of the fifth inning. One away, Cubs up two to nothing on a two-run shot by Dansby Swanson earlier in the frame. Amaya at second and the pitch. PCA looks at a ball low from Veneziano. A sinking fast ball that missed. 1 and0. Veneziano has pitched in 19 games this season. A 3.94 erra. And the pitch packed up behind home plate. The catcher Hicks jocking toward the back stop, but this one is well out of play. One and one. Big hole on the left side of the diamond. Third base and Paulie playing in on the grass at third and the shorts stop playing way up the middle. Edwards. So he’s right in behind Nico at second. So big gap on that left side. Armstrong waits. Here comes the 1-1. Low and outside missed with a slider. So it’s now two and one. Right fielder Sanchez again playing very shallow and right. Left fielder Sters playing deep. And here comes the 2-1 chop foul off to the right. ECA is 0 for one with a walk tonight. Just one away here in the bottom of the fifth inning. Cubs two, Marlins nothing. Amaya at second base. Pal Tucker on deck. And he’s works on the extreme third base side of the rubber. Here’s the pitch. Missed it. Foul out of play off to the left. Second deck. Two and two. Pretty good adjustment by Pete. So pitch before that was a hanging curveball and he’s frustrated that he pulled the trigger too soon. Just rolled over and fouled. So then that last fast ball was inside and he got a good long look at it. It beat him a little in, but that’s a good good adjustment. A swing and a miss. Foul tip into the glove by PCA. Strike three to a win. And then he gets a little inside breaking ball and he’s trying to to look at it as long as he can and then just a little too long. A little seems like he’s a little bit in between right now. He’s a little little tardy with the heater cuz he’s trying to get a look and then occasionally he’s a little jumpy at that slider. I like the adjustment he made on the fast ball. That that was a positive. He’s getting close. Kyle Tucker now stands in the pitch. Breaking ball fouled back off the screen on one. Wind blowing in at the moment, but it’s it’s just a zephyr of a breeze as Pat would say. Beautiful baseball sky here at Wrigley Field. Gray, some white, some blue, some orange. Amaya at second. Now the 01. It’s inside to Tucker. One ball, one strike. Two away here in the bottom of the fifth inning. Cubs up by two. Tuck gets a breaking ball in the middle of the plate here. This one could go a long way. It looks like to me he’s sitting on breaking ball. Tucker with 10 home runs on the year. He waits the 1-1. That sails over Tucker’s head. And advancing to third on the wild pitch is Amaya. Tucker had to duck to avoid getting hit. That went on the fly to the brakes and ricocheted all the way near the Cubs on deck circle along the third base line. Where’s the bull? That missed his target only by about eight feet. A reference from Bulldurham. If fans don’t know that’s their fault. Highf fly ball into deep right field down the line. It frames off the wall. Amaya scores. Tucker digging for third. The throw cut off. RBI triple for Kyle Tucker. And the Cubs extend the lead three to nothing over the Marlins here in a fifth. after the pitch the uh misfire then you know you get a fast ball in middle of the plate inner half maybe Tuck didn’t miss this one he laces this one down into the corner ball kind of gets into that Ivy and Ivy kind of slows that ball down from kicking back out Tucker ends up with a stand up triple now Seu Suzuki stands in with Tucker third and two away the pitch strike on the outside corner. With that triple by Tucker, Great Lakes Credit Union makes another donation to the Northern Illinois Food Bank. Join GLCU’s mission of banking for a greater good at glcu.org. And the pitch high and tight to Suzuki one and one. It’s the second time he’s almost been hit by a pitch tonight. Yeah, that that last one though, that’s a slider inside. That’s not a fast ball up and in. The one Quantrol threw is a fast ball up and in. One ball and one strike. The pitch outside off the glove of the catcher Hicks bouncing slightly to his right but not far enough. Tucker start coming home. So he stays at third. Two and one the count. Hicks already had one glove sent to the equipment manager. He might need another one. That one had that one springloaded. Springloaded. Yeah. You don’t want to hear that if you’re the catcher. Catcher. No, we we’d say in the dugout looks at a strike. A fast ball on the outer half. Two and two. What was that? You heard it. It’s good sound effect. RBI’s by Cubs batters are sponsored by Old National Bank, where relationships and results matter. Get old. Now the 2-2 that’s low and outside. Blocked by the catcher Hicks. Full count. Change that missed. Sea should get a good pitch to hit here. If he does. Suzuki waits. Powerful right-handed batter. Hits out of a crouch. Extends the hands high over home plate. The left-hander. for an easy deal. Highf fly ball deep left center field. This is going to go on. Another two run home run here in the fifth for the Cubs. Number 10 on the year for Seya Suzuki. And the lead is now five to nothing Cubs over the Marlins here in inning number five. Who you just called now. Big fifth inning for the Cubs. say, you knew he was going to get a good pitch to hit. And this one is center cut. This is a pitch that starts out. It’s a cutter. Starts out outer third and comes right to the middle. Bullseye. And this ball gets tattooed to left field. So, a pair of rockets for the Cubs this inning in a five spot here in the fifth. A 413 ft laser by Suzuki as Michael Bush swings and taps one foul at the plate from Veniano. When you pitch in the middle of the strike zone to big league hitters, I don’t care how hard you throw, they’re going to club you. And this inning is proof. Now the 01 course swings and misses at a slider in the hole. 0 and two. Another hefty, hefty, hefty home run. Official trash bag of the Chicago Cubs. Hefty strength. That’s anything but ordinary. Suzuki has a lot of strength. A muscular right-handed batter. The exit velocity on his home run, 107 mph. Or as you said, he tattooed it. The pitch low and outside. One and two on Bush. Another reminder that RBI’s by Cubs batters are sponsored by Old National Bank, where relationships and results matter. Get old. The one two is low. Two balls and two strikes and a light wind blowing in. But right before we started this game, you said the wind would not be a factor for hitters. Yeah, I I was watching batting practice today and the ball was, you know, there were a lot of balls hit way up into the bleachers. Way up into the bleachers. Bush looks at strike three. A fast ball on the outer edge and that ends the fifth inning. But a high five in the fifth for the Cubs, including two two-run home runs. Funny how that works that way, right? I think the people in the bleachers do too. They got a few souvenirs. They maybe some hot hands, but small price to pay, right? Yeah, it sure looked like they were having some fun when those balls are flying into the bleachers. Well, those were two big league home runs. Dansby Swanson clobbered one and so did Seya Suzuki. Sea a little bit more of a line drive, but both were just clobbered. Three balls in a strike on Sanchez. 77 pitches for Colin Ray. The native of Iowa fires and that’s going to be ball four. It’s actually a really good take by Sanchez to not swing at that pitch. A two out walk for Ray. First walk of the game. Cubs lead by five. Augustine Ramirez batting and he’ll swing and miss. Get a kick out of these guys with apparently shoe contracts. Yeah. And the bright blue kicks of Augustine Ramirez. Here’s the pitch on the way. Fouled away off to the right. Out of play. Yeah, they I I would guess as far as cleats go. They’re not making a lot of those special made. I I I would tailor. Yeah, I would think you got to have a shoe contract and ask for those. Here comes the O2 taken high for a ball. It’s one and two. I’ve been I’ve had the same shoe company that I’ve worked with for a long time with Adidas. And if I called and said I wanted that color shoe, what would they say? Here’s a breaking ball outside. It’s two and two. How many sliders have you hit for home runs lately? Time call now. Ramirez will go over to the on deck circle to allow all of us to appreciate his blue shoes for a few more seconds. Yeah, I’ve told you before when I when I danced as a young person, I was very similar to the Tin Man and The Wizard of Oz. Wow. And I don’t think there were many shoe contracts being handed out to the Tin Man. No. No. Kind of stiff, too, huh? Yeah, a little bit. Thanks for adding on to that. There’s a tutu pitch. I meant shoes. swinging a miss. Strike three. Ramirez is out on strikes. No runs, no hits. One 10-man story. And one take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager said the following. And the southpaw delivers to Carson Kelly who fouls it back and the count is 0 and one. Kelly, her and Swanson here in the sixth inning. Erupting for five runs in the fifth. There’s a pitch outside for a ball. The Cardinals have made it nine wins in a row as they beat the Phillies in Pennsylvania tonight 3-2 in a lowscoring game. Here’s the pitch. Bounced toward the middle moving to his left is the shortstop Edwards to make the pick and the throw to get him. And Kelly is out number one the batter Nicoer. But the Cardinals have just been getting fantastic pitching in their eightgame winning streak. This is before tonight, Ron. They had outscored their opposition in the last eight games 33-7. So they’re giving up less than a run per game over the last eight. And then they did give up two tonight, but still won the game. But that’s a hot pitching staff right now. Absolutely. And when you pitch it well, you got a great chance to win. Nico her has flyed to the morning track and center and singled. His single ignited the five run rally in the fifth and he takes a strike one and one. Nico also had a stolen base. Here’s the wind up by left-hander Gibson. And a curveball floats in there for a strike. One and two. Take a look at a little baseball history as we move along. This was a big day for Ernie Banks. There’s a swing and a smash to third. Glove by Paulie. He gets up and throws to first to get him. Good play by Paulie. He had to back up and the force of the ball actually knocked him back and he fell and then quickly got up and made that long throw to first. Made a good play. He really has and and he did on that one and has all game long. He’s made three really nice plays at third base tonight. Sometimes you you feel those those smashes at third and it does knock you backwards, doesn’t it? Absolutely. Dansby Swanson will take a strike. Brian, you may have been watching, although you would have been about four or five years old. 1970 on this date. The legendary Ernie Banks hit home run number 500. I’ve heard that Jack Brick House call many, many times. Just great, isn’t it? Him against the Braves pitcher by the name of Pat Jarvis. Was a line drive right here at Wrigley into about the second or third row. Here’s the O2 outside. And no, I remember seeing it. I I do when I was a kid because it was such a big deal here in Chicago. The buildup of him getting number 500, you know, we were just little guys, you know, and very very big deal. The pitch to Dansby lined in the center of base hits. Swanson stays hot. He is making very consistent, solid contact on almost a daily basis. That’s a great sign for this team. He’s got three balls today that he’s hit right on the button. He hit a line drive at Paulie who made that diving catch. That was a blast. Right. Then he hits the home run deep to left center and now a line drive bullet back to the middle of the field. Two down a man at first. Cubs lead by five. Swanson to be held by MVvis Miguela two for two with a pair of doubles and he’ll take a strike. But I worked with Ron Santo for 15 years and they would play that highlight when he and I were the Cubs radio announcing team and he would see that highlight of Ernie’s 500th and he would say that is a typical Ernie Banks home run. He hit so many. There’s a curveball right here at Wrigley. He said he did not hit the tape measure home runs. He just hit him far enough to get into the first or second or third row line drives many times. That’s all it took. He He knew his park very well, it sounds like. Well, he knew his park and he was he would backspin that ball so even when the wind was blowing in that lowline drive would keep climbing and go just far enough to get to the bleachers. Mhm. There’s the 02 to Miguel instead of pickoff throw to first at this ballpark because the wind blows in so much when it is blowing in. If you’re a guy that hits a lot of high towering shots, the wind affects that ball and blows it back into field of play. If you’re a line drive guy, you’re going to do very well at Wrigley. Chopper foul toward third. 0 and2. Well, the wind giveth and the wind taketh away. And the game plays two completely different ways. Wind blowing in, which you see a lot of in April and early in the season. And then wind blowing out, which is typical for the summertime. There’s a liner to center a base hit. And Amaya is three for three. Two doubles and now a single. Swanson stopping at second. And let’s see if John Birdie can add to this five nothing Cubs lead. That’s kind of like the Cubs have had two different teams in this game. The first half of the game had one hit and really didn’t do much damage. Then the fifth inning, Cubs started banging the baseball, put up a five spot in the fifth and now in the six here with a couple line drive bullets. Here’s John Birdie. He’s hitting tough luck tonight. He hits a drive down the right field line. Might be a tough play. Long run Sanchez. That ball is going to be fouled. Foul. It landed in an area that Ron and I cannot see. That sidewall blocks our vision of balls that come close to hitting that line. So, we wait for the umpire. And first base umpire made that call. Yeah. Sanchez playing so shallow in right field that even that ball hit. He had to go back and it ends up just getting into the seats but just foul. There is 6 in between the white straight the foul line and the wall down the line. Here comes the 01 to John Birdie. Bounced to third. Gloved by Paulie. He’ll throw to second. There’s the force. That’s the inning. Cubs don’t score. It’s on to inning number seven. Cubs five. Marlins nothing on the score. and the Southwest Airlines Cubs Radio Network. Great Cubs guests all season long. Colin Ray a big part of that equation. Colin has thrown shut out ball. Four hits allowed and just very little solid contact against him. Kyle Sters will lead off the seventh for Miami. He has one of the hits, a single his last time up. And the pitch on away, taken high for a ball. The Cubs needed this, too. You’d love to see Greg get through this seventh inning. That would be outstanding. He’s got 84 pitches in the game. Swing and a miss. You know, you play a New York team, you use your bullpen extensively. game two of that series, you have a bullpen game, you know, and and so you you need some starters to really have some really good games and Colin Ray is having one for the Cubs and perfect timing for the Cubs. One-1 Stars, a high fast check swing, no swing. Looking at some more baseball history. 1955 on this date. There was a no hitter right here at Wrigley. Sam Toothpick Jones against the Pirates. He’s reading about that game. Interesting decision. Stan Hack was the Cub manager at that time. Imagine this. It’s a four nothing game in the ninth inning. Your pitcher has a no hitter going. Mhm. There’s a swing and a foul back out away. Sam Toothpick Jones, but he walked the bases full to start the bottom of the ninth inning. Oh wow. And your lead is only 4 nothing. Stan Hack went to the mound and said, I I’ve read about this. He said, you know, I don’t want to take you out. There was a very small crowd on hand. Imagine this. Just 2,918 fans were at Wrigley that day. 1955, many moons ago. Here’s the 3-2. Cubs on top 5 nothing. And the payoff pitch to Sters is way outside and high. That’s a leadoff walk. But think about a manager in that spot, Rod. You You want the guy to get a no hitter. That’s a given. But he’s walked the bases loaded. He probably said, “Look, if you walk, I might let you walk one more guy, but after that, if you walk five in a row, I got to come get you.” Right. Absolutely. Yeah. No, I would agree. That’s That’s something, right? Matt MV, the batter, big left-handed hitter, checks and takes low and inside for a ball. He may have said, “If you walk four in a row, I’m going to have to go get you because now you got the tying runs on base.” Did they score in that game? Does it say they did not? The final was 4 nothing. I was going to say he turned himself around. Sam Toothpick Jones. He struck out. Now listen to the three guys he struck out. Dick Gro, Roberto Clementi, and Frank Thomas to preserve the no hitter. Really, a very small crowd of less than 3,000 on hand at Wrigley that day. It was the first no hitter ever thrown by an African-American ball player in major league history. Very cool. Right here at Wrigley. That is a very tough decision for a manager. Now the 2-1 on the way and that’s going to be a strike. Some other factors would probably go into it. They were they were a struggling franchise, not drawing very well. You’re trying to build up excitement with the fans. Yeah. And to take a guy out in the ninth inning and he’s got a no hitter going. Yeah. Knock. Yeah. You almost had to stay with him. Yeah, I would agree. Yeah. Two and two on MVIS. Cubs lead 5 nothing. And the pitch on the way to Matt. Ground ball to second. Horner’s got it. Go to Swanson. There’s one over to first. There’s two. A double play. 463. They really are a good tandem to watch in the middle of the diamond. Nico her and Dansby Swanson. Second double play they’ve turned today and both of them have been 463. The first one pretty pretty incredible. Nico was on the shortstop side of second and shoveled the ball to Dansby. This one a little more traditional hot smash off the bat of MVIS and the Cubs turn it into a double play. Two down, nobody on. Cubs on top five nothing. Top of the seventh inning. Hardest working players of the game. How about if we save both of those guys at short and second? That’d be great. That takes a lot of practice and um dedication to play that good of defense. consistent consistently. So, the hardest working players of the game, Nicoer and Danby Swanson. Here’s a base hit to left by Simon. Now, the double play looks even bigger. But the hardest working players brought to you by Bosch Power Tools. The more you Bosch, the more you feel like a Bosch. I know I’ve heard you say that. Yeah. Well, I’m not sure I’ve heard you say it quite like that, but I bet while you were gone, while we were in New York, you were missing watching. I was I was missing all these commercials. Yeah, I I figured that. Two B two outs in the inning. And now Tommy Hottabi or Hottie, I was thinking of Bosch still. I put a B in his name. Daniel Palencia throwing in the bullpen. The hard throwing right-hander. Seventh inning stretch coming up soon. Seventh inning stretch will be sponsored by the new Volvo XC90. Designed for life. Derek Hill at the plate. Simon takes his lead at first. Here’s a highf fly ball deep left center trouble all the way back and it’s going to leave the yard. Derek Hill a two-run homer and it puts Miami on the board. It’s now a five to2 ball game. All of the homers in the game have gone to that general area straight away a little more toward left center. Y and it’s carrying very well. Now this a high fast ball and one of those few swings we’ve seen tonight where a hitter has climbed the ladder. Hill gets up on this one and hammers this ball left center and that’ll bring out Craig Counc inning. Sters walked MV hit into the double play which was a very big play in retrospect. Simon singled and now Hill has hit a two-run homer and Colin Ray gets a nice rousing ovation deservedly soing changes for the Cubs are a reminder.
