Utah Mammoth’s Draft Dilemma | Will They TRADE or KEEP the No. 4 Pick?
Do you keep it or do you trade it? Robin and I are going to debate what to do with the number four overall pick in this year’s NHL entry draft. Today on Locked on Mammoth, you are a locked on mammoth. Your daily podcast on the Utah Mammoth, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. Ah, we are indeed locked on Mammoth. Thanks for joining us everyone. I’m veteran NHL voice Tom Callahan joined by longtime team analyst Robin Leano and we are here today to talk about that number four overall pick. Robin fell in their lap. a fantastic surprise. But I had to ask because I feel like at least one phone call’s coming, if not 28 about acquiring that number four pick from the Utah Mammoth. So, it’s a great surprise to leap from 14 to four, but now you and I are going to go around on what they should do with it. and it’s going to be a really good conversation about it because I feel like like there’s a lot of things to kind of talk about with this draft. So there there are and there are even some of our fans out there who are giving us their vocal opinions already on what they think uh Utah should do with this draft. But we’re going to now kind of um we’re going to take a look at both sides and kind of figure out what is the better option for Utah because uh I don’t think there really necessarily is a right answer, but there certainly is a uh like there certainly needs to be a a discussion about it. Yes. And now, Robin, I’m going to reference uh one of the comments from a couple of shows ago that was left and said, “Hey, I’m just wondering why you guys want to invite comments when it’s not a live show and you can’t have a live dialogue with your listeners and viewers.” And the answer is is several folds. Uh number one is that we do read them all. Uh both Robin and I go through the comments, but number two, because we often bring them up, as I am now with this particular comment, bringing them up on a future show, and we do want to know what your opinions are. Should they trade this pick? Should they keep this pick? We want to know what your thoughts are as well. Really quick, Tom, I will say this, too. A lot of a a lot of you guys are saying because this happens on our YouTube premieres um many times. Maybe I’m stuck at my day job and stuff like that. while the premiere is going on, right? These are pre-recorded shows by the way, but you guys know a lot of these times if it is a live show, it’s a whole different acts a little bit differently. Like we’ll live interact with a lot of you guys during those live shows like as much as we can. We’ll chat with you during the premieres. It’s a little bit less. It’s a little bit different. I mean, I think that’s an opportunity for you guys as fans to interact with each other, share your thoughts, what what the show’s going on, but still comment because we’ll still we we will still read those comments later on um and interact with you back. I I know right away. That’s an excellent point, Robin. Yeah, I mean, hey, we want to build a community here. We want a locked down Mammoth community. We are all fans of this team in one way or another. We all love and support this team and want to see it do well. I I want to see it win a Stanley Cup as much as you do, you know. So, I mean, that’s why at the end of the day, we’re passionate enough. Now look, we’re on the other side of the media ropes, but we try to bring you that information, that access, and uh give you our thoughts mixed in with it so that you can then go and go talk to your friends uh wherever you’re gathering, whatever you’re doing. And when you throw out Utah Mammoth, hey, maybe you’ve got a little ace up your sleeve because you were listening to the podcast and you’re like, “Oh, I know something about this. Check this out. I’m going to drop a couple of nuggets in here.” And um that’s that’s what we want to do. That’s what we we strive for. So, we do read all the comments. We do always check in on that stuff and and we encourage you guys to interact with one another. So, uh and and thanks for those of you who have been the everydayers and the longtimes who’ve always listened to this show and and you know, know the drill. But if you’re new, that’s okay. You know, we’re we’re getting you up to speed here. So, Robin, number four pick. Um what is the first thing that comes to mind for you? Do you trade it or do you keep it? It’s an interesting aspect and I was actually asked this question by a fellow fellow co-host uh not really co-host but colleague I should say fellow colleague within within the locked on network of someone who’s a little bit further back in the draft and the as the and I think to put it in the shortest answers I can again we are I am going to expand on it later but the shortest answer we can is you you go through this period with the int with the full intention of keeping that pick, but keep the phone line open, right? You keep the phone line open. Listen to offers. Um let if you want to go ahead allow him allow a bidding war if you want. Um because it’s not a pick you give up unless something a like a tangible uh high, you know, highly valued asset is coming back. And I’m not talking about another draft pick for a prospect in Utah’s case. We’re talking about like a potential a like top six starting player coming back um the other direction. like I cannot see any I I cannot see them parting with the number four pick otherwise. So Robin, talking about number four overall and we on past shows have talked about some of those number four overall picks who they’ve turned out to be um you know players like Kale Mar. I mean they can be franchise and in some cases generational players. Now there’s no home run guaranteed even at number one quite frankly. um look at the 2012 draft, but there’s no guarantee at number four you’re getting a generational franchise player, but there’s no guarantee uh no matter where you’re picking. So, yes, there is the chance at number four to pick someone who will be with your organization for the long term and be making an impact for years to come and doing so in a top six role on the forward core. Maybe a top D pairing defenseman coming down the line here. Certainly you don’t pick goalenders out high anymore. Um but no a real chance to have someone who is a Utah mammoth that is an all-star caliber player. Yeah. And you know what’s interesting by the way and I feel like it’s like and I I was actually asked this question on ESPN 700 in Salt Lake City um just a few days ago right about how what what’s the expectation for an Impact for someone being drafted around this level you know and I was you know I was candidly ob um candidly honest you know with uh you know with the host there and I was like you know the NHL is unique in a situation where very rarely do these players who get drafted are on the team immediately and make a superstar impact immediately. And I say very rarely because we have some very, you know, some good some occasions, you know, the last couple of ones like Matt Celerini and uh and Conor Badard and you know, uh let’s see even Austin Matthews, Conor McDavid, another those kinds of players, right? They make immediate impacts because they are generational talents. Otherwise, even at a first at a number one pick, you’re waiting at least a year, maybe two years for these guys to kind of make it in, make their and make their break. Will they still get maybe their 10 game try out period try out period immediately? Sure. But they’re not going to come in right away. It also depends on where they’re playing. College players tend to stay a little bit longer than junior players. Junior players are trying to get out of junior and get into the pro ranks. U if they’re European, it may be a while before they’re even in North America. And you have to keep that in mind as well because sometimes you know the best path to development or even the one that the player chooses might be to stay at home. So those are all things that you have to consider. But drafting at number four, my argument for keeping the pick is that you will with smart scouting and I think Utah’s shown they pick pretty well. Um you will pick up a player that is going to be an impact player a couple years down the road but for a long time to come. And I think that the Utah scouts have shown that they are able to pick up uh the best available talent and to get them to become an NHL ready player within a couple of years. Oh yeah, we’re and I think I mean you and I have talked about the uh the level of trust we have in Bill Armstrong and his and his scouting staff. Um uh and you know the uh director you know the director of scouting I think has always done a phenomenal job the last few years. Um and the only guy name is probably Pllandowski has done a phenomenal job. That’s what his name is. Uh and like we’re and it’s going to be unique because again Utah didn’t expect to get this fourth overall pick. They kind of this somehow they really lucked out. I mean that’s kind of the point of a lottery. Um, but they really looked out and they now they’re in this really unique situation and like I said, it’s it you were asked about, hey, hey, do you like like what’s it going to take? You know, what are the chances that the conversation is is at least entertained on uh on trading this pick and and and I’ll say it again, it just really it has to make sense, right? You’re not going to pick up the phone for just anybody. Right. Right. Absolutely. Well, we’re gonna I’m going to argue for why they should trade it. And Robin, I’m interested to hear your reasons of why trading it is the better option. That’s coming on the other side here. Don’t forget to drop your comments in uh as we’re going along here, whether it’s on the YouTube side. You can always reach out to us on social media. We’ll give you that info if you don’t have it. But just know that our handles are changing to lockdown mammoth uh in a lot of cases. So keep an eye out for those as well. If you have the account bookmarked, it will just lead to the new name. So just uh know that you’re going to you might have to make some adjustments to the bookmark as well. So all right. Um hey, we’re going to talk about why they should trade it here. And today’s show is brought to you in part by wonderful pistachios. Look, you guys know I’m a nut, but I’m also nuts for a snack that’s both delicious and nutritious. See what I did there? Back into a good source of protein with wonderful pistachios. Wonderful pistachios is actually one of the highest protein nuts. Each 1 oz serving, has six grams of protein, which gives you over 10% of your daily value. Plus, they’re packed with fiber and better for you on saturated fats to help you keep feeling fuller longer. You know, I’m no shells guy and I like the mini packs. That’s a graband-go snack. Keep it in the bag, keep it, you know, you can even keep a couple in the center console of your vehicle. You’re driving around, little grits you, boom, rip it open. Plus, you get the variety pack with the different flavors in it. It’s absolutely perfect. I love it. Maybe you’re a shells person. You love to crack open the shell. You love that satisfying crunch. You can get the inshells. I won’t judge you. I might even get them sometimes, too. But, you know, when you’re running between meetings or you’re dropping off the kids, maybe Wonderful Pistachios are the snack that works as hard as you do. So, get snacking and get cracking with a snack that packs a protein punch. Visit wonderfulpistachios.com to learn more. All right, Tom Callahan, Robin Leano, if you’re still here, you’re still listening, you’re still watching, please subscribe. We appreciate each and every one of you who do. Uh it makes what we do worthwhile. We love it and we appreciate the growing community here with Locked on Mammoth and uh I mean this is a rocket and we’re going to ride it right through the draft right into free agency. We’re going to be with you every single day pumping out the content here. So, if you’re hungry to know what’s going on with uh can we call we can’t call them M now. I’m so used to UHC Robin. Can we call them the Mams? No, I think it’s just Mammoth at this point. All right. All right. If you want to know what’s going on with the Mammoth every day, we we got we’ll come up with something. Can’t we’ll come up with something. We’ll figure it out. You can drop that in the comments, too. Um, and we will get to potential mascot names later on. Tus. What about just Tus? Uh, yeah. Okay. I’m gonna go back to my original vote on that. We We’ll come back to that, too. Um, Robin, you tell me why you think the Utah Mammoth should trade this pick. Yeah, absolutely. So, uh, why I think they should trade this pick, um, is one thing. Um, so like I kind of like as kind of alluded to before, right? Um, is Bill Armstrong has known where like where like the the value of some of these picks and where they might, you know, where they might come and if someone comes and gives the right call, brings the right assets back and brings a player who is good to play now and make a significant impact now, that will surely help Utah kind of get the slight nudge they need. And and I mean slight. It’s not going to be like sending anything crazy, nothing world changing to get them into um the uh even further into the playoff conversation. This Utah team had 89 points last season, right? They were right on the verge of a playoff spot. Really gosh darn close. Like 89 points is phenomenal. Again, last season the like the previous season, the Arizona Coyotes only finish of 77. Think about that big that that much of a difference, right? Utah’s making significant strides. This Mammoth team making significant strides every single year. And what you can do is Utah, they know they don’t necessarily need that high, they didn’t need this highle draft pick, right? You use it as a bidding war, get a highle player coming back and they can actually be a competitive team and really fight for it going into the next year. So, the mammo? No. Still not not sold. No. How about the the I’m trying. I I got to come up with something catchy. Um, so anyway, if they make this pick at number four, I’m going to be upset. They better not have this pick at number four. They need to trade this pick. It needs to be put in play and they need to bring back a top six forward. Hopefully a center. Uh I want to see more center depth. I want to see a center with size. I I I Okay, I want a power forward. That’s a honestly I for me it has to be like a one a 1C. I want a top six. I don’t you’re not getting a 1C for a fourth. I don’t think I think you’d have to give up something else. Now look, if the packaging grows a little, that’s fine. Um, I don’t I don’t mind that because I think Utah’s dealing from a position of depth and strength. They have prospects. They have picks. They have a ton of picks. Um, they have a lot going for them, Robin. But they need a top six forward who can score or they need maybe I would love to see a physically imposing defenseman who can play, who has some wheels, who has a good head on his shoulders. Mhm. But Robin, here’s the thing. This team’s window opens next year. Now, it might open only a crack, but it is the beginning of opening the window. You are a playoff team next year or you’re a disappointment. And a player that you pick a number four earliest is in your lineup in two years. And that is your three-year window. And honestly, at that point, you are gunning for a cup if you follow the trajectory of the blueprint. Yeah. But that’s as a rookie. If you can get someone in to accelerate your development towards a cup win, absolutely. I do that. Plus, two, let’s let’s remember this, Tom, and it’s it’s an aspect of like people talk that this draft isn’t as deeper. So people are going to want to trade up um and really again re and put a lot more value in the trading up because like really it’s it’s a top five pick and after that it’s not necessarily bad players but just like the the the the skill level significantly drops. It really is like a one and two, you know, Misa and Schaefer or one and two and then you have like a group of like three or four different players down between the next group and then after that it’s like the rest of the, you know, the rest of the crew. Um, I think that’s what’s going to add the level of the, you know, a a level of uh of value into the number four overall pick. People going to want to, you know, trade up there. Um, but the other point I’m trying to make here is let’s remember Utah still has Tja Gendla, Cole Bodwan, um, as well as, uh, Demetri Shimichev, Daniel Boots, and a few other players who are still making their way over u to, you know, we still have yet to, you know, see, you know, suit up in a in a in in a in a mammoth jersey. So I feel like like this is one where again they don’t need this pick because of how you know how incredible their their prospect system is. I mean they’ve been already graded I think previously like among one of the top I think top 10 I should say top five is would be a stretch but at least like top 10 top 12 uh I say top 10 is fair to say top 10 uh like prospect classes like you know in the NHL. They’ve got a really strong prospect class and that’s really to say a lot of what Bill Armstrong done has done over the last couple years and that’s what puts him in a very good situation where again like you said he doesn’t need this fourth overall pick. I’d like I would like to see what he does with it if he does take a pick and see what kind of what it does take out of it. But you’re right I feel like Bill Armstrong can do so much more if he trades it away. But as long as he does it correctly, right, I I have zero zero doubt that he won’t just trade it for peanuts. I know what he can do. Yes. Let Bill cook. Let Bill cook. Let Bill cook. That’s our phrase. That’s going to be our phrase just this entire, you know, as long as we’re doing this show, every now and then we’re going to throw in that in. Just let Bill cook. Yes. Hash let Bill cook. That is exactly uh what it is. By the way, um I will say this, at number four, there’s there’s plenty of talent to be chosen. I think this is a pretty good draft. Um but there will be a lot of teams that come calling and look, if the package kind of gets a little bigger on both ends, but you end up with a player who ultimately puts you over the top, it’s absolutely worth it. So absolutely if uh if Utah does keep the pick. I mean again there are you know among the top six there are a solid level number of players who could be available. I mean like who who Utah could very well pick right could be a really and increase the depth and I think it’d be really good and to help us you know kind of create that conversation guys coming up on tomorrow’s episode. So, Wednesday, when most of you guys are listening, it’s coming out on Wednesday’s episode. We’re going to have a notable friend of the show and and uh and draft, you know, draft scout Will Scouch is going to be joining us on this show. Um he’s going to break down the draft class and we’re going to kind of even, you know, approach a couple of players and see if how well those players might fit the Utah system, whether it fits Bill Armstrong’s MO, whether it’s uh whether it’s a smarter they go this direction or that direction. Will Scout has been great. Um those have been a long every day been around for a long time. Know I’ve had Will on uh you know occasionally over the last couple of drafts. Um, so and I think Will definitely helped us when was one of the reasons why I jumped fully on the Logan trade. I believe I was like, you know what, that’s like at that time back in in 2022, I was like, yep, I’m fully on the Logan train and just because, you know, all the information I got, you know, from guys like Will Scout. Yes, absolutely. And a lot for us to look forward to. So, uh, Robin and I want to get into potential mascot names, not just cool jazzy nicknames for this team, actual mascot nicknames. And we want your thoughts on this as well. Tom Callahan, Robin Leano, back here with you to wrap things up on the Locked on Mammoth podcast. Robin, the hashtag is tusks up for the mammoth. That is the official team hashtag here. Um, I think if I’m going to say just based off of that, a first mascot possibility that you’re we’re going to kick around has to be Tusk, right? Or Tusks. But Tusk, probably Tusk, right? Maybe you’re not feeling it. I can tell. I can tell you’re not feeling it. Nah, I’m not feeling that. Like I just I just like I I like I like what you’re thinking, but I don’t I just don’t do Here’s the thing, right? Like my I don’t I understand the direction you’re trying to go. I just don’t think it’s the direction that works best. Um, I do think again tus up is the symbol and I feel like it’s what the fans are going to be doing, right? Um, this this is absolutely where we’re going. This is my vote. This is what’s happening. Credit Tom for that when it happens. That’s is this we we’ve agreed. We’ve we’ve we’ve agreed. We’ve agreed. We’ve come to an agreement. That’s where it’s going to be. Um, but and I feel like All right. here is uh uh like a a uh something that came up across and this this this is a is a is a measure of different ideas, right? So, someone there’s someone I think I think it was I’m and correct me if I’m wrong if you if I want to take a look at the tweet here, but I believe it was Cole B, you know, from uh from KSL who said that Woolly, you know, for the for the actual mammoth and they should have a like a caveman, like a second one that’s going to be kind of, you know, for the fans and call him Clever. or you just have the the the fans called clubvers. So I I suggested Woolly back when we first saw on the show when we did the reveal. I said Woolly’s got to be the mascot because Woolly Bully is the obvious theme song for this mascot. And that’s just fun for everybody. Everybody loves that song. Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs. I I I just think that’s perfect. So I like Woolly. Um I can get on board with that one. Um, and you know what’s kind of funny about calling everybody clubbers is it kind of hearkens back to this year one, right? Utah hockey clubbers. Now we’re just clubbers. We’re all cave people. I mean, I don’t know. Do you like that? And it work. And it works. Yeah, because cave people they have the clubs. I think so. I like it. So, all right, Robin, give me a couple of your names for The Mammoth. I mean, I feel like Woolly makes most sense, but like if like if you want to go down the Tusk, like Tusk route and the song Tusk from Fleetwood Mac, you put that in there. Okay. Maybe. Okay. You got to ask. got again. You have add some fun in there. Or you just do the uh the uh the mammoth theme song from the Ice Age movie as a as as a way to introduce him whenever he comes in. What about uh I think it’ll take some time. There’s there’s a lot of brainstorming. How about Marty? There’s going to be a lot of M names that are going to pour out of this for the alliteration. And I do like me a good bit of aliteration, Marty. So, Michael Mammoth. Okay. Mikey, Mark. What if it What if it’s a female? It could be Mary had a little mammoth. That’s possible. I mean, there’s a lot of different ways. Again, there’s so many different ways that you can uh directions you can go. I do like the the more alliteration, kind of keeping the same uh you know, the same theme or some go as you know, just go as simple as you can. I mean, I love the ones that that do that. I mean, uh, look at the Anaheim Ducks with Wildwing or the San Jose Sharks of SJ Sharky or, um, like some just do it based off like their color, you know, the colors or whatever aspect. Um, I honestly like it took me a while to to like really understand it until I really understood it. But like for example, Dallas is with Victor E. Green. You know, Victory E green is the name of their color, right? I was like, “Okay, that’s pretty cool.” like there’s so many different avenues you can go then. Of course, you don’t want to copy exactly how you get there from other team names, but you there’s a uh there’s a there’s at least that level of history to be able to understand where they’re, you know, what they could go down, what avenues they could explore. ICD mammoth. Okay. Getting I think I think we’re getting a little bit closer. We’re getting a little bit closer. I mean, as much as we’d love to see Manny, I think, you know, DreamWorks might not DreamWorks might not think that’s a good idea. Yeah, but but Manny would be fun, right? I mean, that’s that’s got to be a sentimental figure. If you can come into an agreement with DreamWorks and be like, “Hey, come on. Like, we have some fun with it.” Then yes, do it. Yeah. Pull the trigger on Manny. Yeah. I I think All right. All right. I think Willie is my early leader in the clubhouse, but we’ll see. We’ll see how this goes. Um, drop your suggestions for a name in the comments for us or reach out to us on social. Let us know what you think. Robinson, which one are you picking out of this pile so far? Your early leader in the clubhouse for mascot name is what? I’m going to I’m going to go with uh with Woolly as my as my top right now. Okay. All right. So, Locked on Mammoth right now is united in Woolly for the time being. We’ll see how long that lasts. Uh, Robin, if folks want to drop their comments to us on social and their potential names, where can they find us? Yeah, we’re everywhere on social on Twitterx, Instagram, threads, and blue sky, locked mammoth. You can follow us there. I am personally at Robin Leano on X at Robinetime on Blue Sky. So, I just want people to know that, Robin. Uh, so I might not be able to get back to everybody right away, but don’t worry, we’re still cranking out daily comment uh content for you. We’re still going to have it all right here and we invite you to follow along with us. So, thank you so much once again for being a part of the show. “mamily” cuz we the mammoth family
Mammoth Family!!
I hope we aren't going to be called Clubbers. I very much dislike that.
Its been Wooly for me all along.
How about a third option that you surprisingly didn't mention? TRADE UP to get Misa. We need a 1C. We have an abundance of prospects and assets. NYI has a weak prospect pool. We can package some assets and get a blue-chip C prospect who fills an org need and will be in the NHL sooner than any other prospect in this draft. NYI strengthens its rebuild, and they can draft hometown Hagens at #4. Win-win. If we can't do a deal with NYI, what about the Sharks? They don't need Misa. Can we trade up to get Misa at #2 if NYI goes with Schaefer? Do we want to build a championship-caliber team or just "make the playoffs next year"? Speaking from experience as a recovering Canucks fan, the latter option is a frustrating dead end. Being competitive is alluring, but it's shortsighted.
Sorry, Wolly Bully is not the song. Could you imagine a full band playing Tusk every night? Brings in that college football vibe that Utah loves on top of just being unique for the NHL. Tusk is the way to go.
