just about get started and towing the slab here. Tony Gonelin and Singy that may be his name, but the strikeout is his game. Well, Boo, I can tell you’ve been working on that one, but yes, you are right. This guy strike out per nine over 11. I mean, that’s just getting it done. There are a lot of strikeouts in that other lineup. And when you look at what he’s able to do, man, it’s going to be a fun one to watch today. Out in front and fouled to the left side. swing and a ground ball out to short. Throw on to Freeman. One up, one down. And time now to check out the A’s lineup. One of the more high-powered lineups in the game right now. It’s built to do damage and they got some hitters that could punish the baseball. Chris, so fun to watch these players take their at bats. I mean, they’re so disciplined. don’t give not just at bats away but really pitches away. Very aggressive, competitive in the zone. And when they connect, there’s usually some loud noise to it. So, we’ll keep our ears open today. Brent Rooker stands in now and watches strike one. One of the notes on Tony Gonelin. That’s fun. He likes cats. I think on his glove it says the catman. One out. Base is empty. And that’s in the dirt. Hit hard on the ground to short. Quick start here this evening. Two out. Top of the first. Batting third, left fielder Tyler Soderstrom. Two outs, space is empty. Tyler Sodstrom up next for the A’s. Take it high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. The other way and it stays fair around first and hustling for second. And that’s a double. He was all over that one. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. Took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. So runner at second. Two down. And now a chance for Shay Langalers. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Well, you always want to come out in the first inning, try to put something up on the board. It’s a big two-out double right there. See if the cleanup man can drive him in and put a tally up there on the board. So, two balls and no strikes. The strategy of winning a ball game when you could make that pitcher work a little more, expose himself by throwing pitches. That can be the key to winning perhaps later on. So, a good job of extending this inning, getting a knock with two outs to bring the number four hole hitter up. And the two-1 hammered but foul. Sodrom at second with two down. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. just misses and that’s ball three. Really good take especially with two strikes. Hot shot to first base and he snags it to end the inning. The A’s strand one. The Dodgers coming up and we are scoreless. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Back here at Chavez Ravine and on the hill today, Luis Severino Singy. He’s kind of a road warrior. Yeah, I definitely say so. You know, some guys shrink a little bit on the road. They’re so used to just, you know, having the comforts of being at home and having the fans behind them, but this guy seems to thrive in adversity and being in some hostile environment. So, when you have a player like this on your team that goes out there and competes, you definitely like your chances away from your home ballpark. And that is out of play. kicks and fires outside low and now it’s even one and one. Swings through that one for strike two. That smash towards center. Le makes the grab. One down. Time now for Dave Roberts lineup for the Los Angeles Dodgers. This is a ball club that can really slug. Lots of homers, lots of extra base hits. And Chris, that of course a huge part of success in the standings for this group. Well, if you’re going to be successful in today’s game, you’ve got to be able to hit the ball over the fence. Just defensively, very hard to find the holes. And when you’re talking about pitchers, you know, coming out of the bullpin throwing 95 and above, very difficult. It’s hard to string together two, three, four hits to score those runs. So definitely critical to hit those homers, get the extra base knocks, and that’s exactly what they’ve been doing. Swinging a foul out of play. Power is such a big part of the success that we see with the good teams in the league right now and even in the postseason. Swings through that one, two straight. That was the sweeper, but it missed. Well struck left field. That’s down. One hops off the wall. Betts into second. Drove that ball nicely. Put a great swing on it and it jumped off his bat. Kind of put it all together there. And he’s rewarded with the double. One out, runner at second. And here’s Freddy Freeman. This one kicks away a little as he can’t squeeze it. and he chases a high fast there. He can live up in the zone all game if hitters will chase it. That’s just too much velocity. Hitters got to look down in the zone. comes up empty. That’s strike two. Two strikes. And that one got a piece of him. He had two strikes on him. Eddie hit him. First and second, one out. And next will be the Dodgers cleanup hitter, Will Smith. That one finds the zone. And that’s strike one. One out. Runners at first and second. Swing and a miss as he was late. I think he was sitting off speed there. Swing and a miss. 98 mph on the gun. Oh, really expanded the zone right there with that fast ball off the outside corner of the plate. got him to chase it. That’s a tough one to lay off of because it starts close to you and just continues to run away from you in that batter’s box. So, it’s a really nice pitch with two strikes. Muny digs in and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. that crosses the plate and now they’re just one strike away from getting out of this mess. And look out, that one gets him. The second man he’s plunked in this one. So, two down now and here is Andy Pahes. And that one fouled off. Bets at third. Freeman on second. Muny at first. Two out of the inning. And there’s a ball. That one is absolutely belted and it’s a one hopper off the wall. Should be extra bases. Muny on his horse around third. He’s safe and they clear the bases and they’re up by three. Well, that breaks the tie in a big way. Clearing the bases. Put a pretty good swing on that one as he drove it out to deep left. didn’t quite have the right combination of launch angle and exit velocity to get it over the fence, but you’re never going to be disappointed with extra bases. So, two down. The batter will be Michael Conforto. And that’s in for a strike. Well, with this many pitches thrown here in this first inning, I mean, you’re giving the other team a really good look. He’s going to have to find a way to get some weak contact, maybe a swing and miss, get into that dugout, and hit the reset button. down to the dirt. Swing and a miss. Catcher has it. Fires to first. That completes the strike out and that’ll do it. But three runs come across in the inning. All on this three-run double. It’s now three nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. New inning getting started. Now it’s the right fielder Miguel Anduhar. Duhar Gonelin back to work. Ground ball right side. Oh, and it hits the base. Safe at second with a leadoff double. Well, clearly he was ready to hit right there. I really like that swing, man. He didn’t just push it the other way through the infield. He drove it that way. And it kind of makes me think he was thinking opposite field as he stepped into the box, got a pitch he liked, and he got it done. Next up for the A’s, Nick Curts. Swinging a high-fly ball right field. That’s how you do it. Makes the grab. Grounder tags at second and he makes it up to third with one away. Batting seventh, second base, Luis Urias. So, a man aboard. Here’s Luis Oas. Fly ball to the outfield for a sack fly. Soft ground ball to the right side. Find a hole. He can attack this a few ways, but the one thing he can’t do is strike out. Ball one, no strikes. How about this one, Boo? In 2023, Aras hit grand slams for Boston in back-to back plate appearances. They happened on different days, but he still became the first Red Sox player to do it since Jimmy Fox in 1940. Gary Simmons, our plate umpire today, sort of has a reputation as a pitcher umpire. Yeah, a little bit of a wider zone than most, I’d say. And a wide zone can be tough to deal with as a hitter cuz you have to start expanding what you’re looking for, covering both sides. And with the stuff pitchers have today, you’re just not going to have a lot of success that you want. And that one fouled off. What about an umpire’s height? How much of a role does that play in your experience and what the strike zone is like? Yeah, I think it pushes the strike zone up a little bit, which you know, as a former hitter, you like that. You wanted the ball up. You didn’t want to have to deal with stuff down in the zone consistently. Just locked him up right there for the second out. And that’s an at bat he’s probably going to be thinking about for a little while. Didn’t pull the trigger. Not how you want to go down in an RBI spot. So now you got to hope your teammate behind you can pick you up. This is JJ Blade. It immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. That’s right. This one in the dirt and the runner holds. Two outs and one in scoring position. All right, fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2 swing at a ball popped up. Bets nabs it and that’ll do it. One hit in the inning, but nothing more than that. Now to the bottom of the second. It’s the Dodgers three and the A’s nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom half of inning number two. And now the rookie second baseman Hung Kim that misses the zone and it’s one and0. Kim measures 5′ 10 in, 26 years old, and he’s a native of South Korea. Next pitch is outside and he can’t come up with it. Still finds a way to get off a throw and it’s in time. It wasn’t the smoothest play you’ll see today, but they still get the out. And at the plate for the Dodgers, James Outman. We talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it. But pushing the offense aside for just a second, Chris, it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most. Next offering in there for a strike. And it’s a ball and a strike. Well, he gets to balls that get by most people at that position. Just really impressive because there’s certain times a ball comes off the bat, automatically that team that hit it thinks that they’ve got a base hit or they may have extra bases and he just takes it away. Miguel Roas. Back to the top of the lineup. Miguel Rojos at the plate. He’s 0 for one. That’s a ball. And that’s a little bit high now. Two and0. Two out. Space is empty. Well, I would expect in this three-0 count. You’re taking all the way. See if he’ll walk you. Mookie bets waiting to bat for the Dodgers. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95 and down on strikes. That Kay is his third of the game. Dodgers go down quietly, but they lead it three nothing. Back here in LA. Here’s Gio Orio Or just missed. Was good pitch there. really had some run and finished a little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Off the mark there and it’s two and one. Pretty easy to give up on that pitch right there. Started on the edge of the plate with the spin. And you know it’s going to finish well off the plate. Yeah, that’s fouled off. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Next offering is downstairs and a foul ball. He stays alive. That one misses. So a leadoff walk very close off the outside corner. Could have easily been called a strike in that location. So the batting order turns over. Jacob Wilson up next for the A’s. 0 for one. He ground it out in his first at bat. Fast ball for a strike. Well, the key to his success is getting ahead early in the count. He cannot afford to go deep in the counts. Doesn’t have a ton of swing and miss stuff, so he’s going to have to work efficiently. Line drive. Base hit. lead runner holds up. They’re at first and second with nobody out. Solid swing from start to end. On time with everything. Really good balance. Nice extension. And he met it out front for the line drive knock. And now the DH Brent Rooker grounded out his first time up. Just missed. The one-1 is fouled off. on the ground. Two ball. Kim over to second. How about that double play? They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leagers. They make tough plays look simple. Here’s the left fielder, Tyler Soderstrom. Doubled in his first AB. That misses the zone. Ball one. No strike. Two outs and a runner at third. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. this one in the dirt and well done to keep it close. Let’s go. line drive and foul ball. You could see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch, but just a little tardy on the fast ball. And now it’s filled up. Shay Langalers hoping for a chance. He would represent the tying run. Yeah, Boo. Plenty of power in that bat. They’d love to give him a shot here. Gods turns, fires. So now two on and two outs. So close to getting out of it right there, but this inning still has life. A catcher. So two outs with runners on the corners. Shay Langalers up next for the A’s. Foul ball there. Two outs. Late that time. And it’s strike two. Here’s the O2 swing and a miss and he got him out number three. So they’re able to work around a pair of walks in the inning. We head now to the home half of inning number three. It’s the Dodgers three and the A’s nothing. set for the bottom of the third. Here’s Mookie now singing. He’s a guy that covers both sides of the plate about as well as anyone in the sport. How difficult is that to do? Oh, just look at the back of my bubblegum card. You’ll see how hard it is. These guys are great, man. They have the ability to look out there, but also to be able to turn on the inside pitch. Those that can really sharpen things on the outer half, those are the ones that become elite. Swing and a miss as he was late that time. Foul ball still 0 and two. One ball, two strikes. goes down looking. Here comes Freddy Freeman up to hit. Very humble guy and you know on the field off the field and he goes about his at bats in that way. Boog. He’s, you know, just trying to stay with the plan. And that plan is hit the ball to left center field, drive the ball that way, let it travel. Yep. That clips a corner. 02 count. Both pitches on the inside part of the plate. Hitter is thinking, I don’t want to get beat here. This is a good time for something off speed away. just misses with that one. Really close pitch down around the knees there. And you could see him asking where it missed. Probably doesn’t agree, but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch. Severino kicks, steals, fans another. And that’s three straight strikeouts. Back-to-back strikeouts to start the frame. And that’s now three in a row. Yeah, he’s really settling in and getting a feel for his pitches, throwing them where he wants to right now. So, we’ll see how long he can keep this streak going. And first off is fouled off. Foul ball. Two down. Nobody swinging a ground ball and it goes just fouled. Clearly trying to stay back a little bit longer for that change up as he fouls that fast ball back. Battling here as he fouls it away. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. And that keeps the inning alive. Now batting Maxy at the dishy and a foul ball. ground ball to the right side and it gets by him and that’ll put runners at the corners with two away now batting right fielder Andy. So they’re at the corners now and here is Andy Pahus picked up a double and three runs batted in at his first at bat. That one missed. It’s in and out of his glove. Still manages a throw. Misplay doesn’t cost him. Inning over. Dodgers strand a couple, but they lead it three nothing. And we’re back onto the fourth now. Here is Miguel Anduhar. Here’s a fun fact. Dodger Stadium was also the home of the Los Angeles Angels for four years in the 1960s while they waited for Anaheim Stadium to be built. When the Angels were playing games at home, instead of Dodger Stadium, they called it Chavez Ravine Stadium. And there’s a foul ball. That’s knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Next pitch is outside. Now in this three ball count down in the ball game, you’ve got to be very selective. Take your walk if they’ll give it to you. Fouled off. And they’ll do it again. And they’ll do it again. spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another. Quite the matchup we’re seeing here. Six foul balls in this atbat alone. Really making them work out there. That one misses. So a leadoff walk that could jump start an offense that’s really struggled to score in this one. Don’t want to wake a team up with the free pass. Nick Curts up next for the A’s. Fly to center. His first time. He’s 0 for one. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. You know, these athletics doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. They’ve worked three walks already, so that proves they’re not anxious up there. They’re sticking to their game plan, and it’s working. And a foul ball makes the count two and one. All right. And that one is lifted in the air. Confor and there’s one away. Now batting second base Luis Urias. Luis Urias up next for the A’s. Struck out looking at his first at fouled away on Duhar over at first with one away. Pop foul out of play off to the right. left field. Confor gets under it and puts the squeeze on that one. Two down. Now batting the center fielder JJ Blade. Next up for the A’s, JJ Blade. First time up was a pop out. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And that is ball one. Los Angeles. And another ball. The Dodgers leading by three. Top half of inning number four. Swinging a foul straight back. The two-1. There’s the strike. gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. spoils that one and it remains two and two. Good battle here about to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. And it remains two and two. Fouls that off to the left and will do it again. Having such a tough time putting him away. Six foul balls in a row. Man, what a battle. swing and a pop off in foul ground. Muny makes the catch and that is that. The A’s strand one. They trail it here. 3 nothing. Back here at Dodger Stadium. Michael Conorto will climb in. Michael Conorto right through there for a strike. You know, these Dodgers showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. It’s not just the three runs they’ve already Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Safe at first. No play. We’ll see how they score this. pretty much gifted a lead off base runner right there. And as an offense, this is where you really want to take advantage. Apply some pressure this inning. Make that error hurt. So, a man at first, Hessung Kim steps to the plate for the Dodgers. And the first offering is not close. And that pitch count is impactful because if they can keep making him work hard out there, it may force the bullpen to get involved a little sooner rather than later. Ground ball right side could be two. Feeds to second out there over to first. Safe. You know, that looks routine, but it hasn’t been so easy for this club defensively this year. And you got to make those routine plays behind a pitcher. helps him to get more comfortable and move through this ball game. And next for LA, James Outman. He popped out his first time. Go and one. Movement in the bullpen. JP Sears, the young lefty looks to be getting himself ready. Beo also getting ready. Man at first, one away. He might want to steal second in this spot, but he’s dealing with a catcher that has one of the best pop times in the game. He needs to pick his spot very wisely. And it’s even up. This is one of those situations the infielders have to pre-plan and understand that the ball’s got to be hit extremely hard right at them if they’re going to have a chance to go for a double play. Go Dodgers. Next offering is fouled back. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. Down and in. Moved his feet. Severino swing and a ground ball. Base hit right field. Throw into third in there safely. Love how he became a really tough out with two strikes right there. He kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit, but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock. And you’ll take that anytime you can get him to find a hole. Next is the designated hitter, Miguel Rojas. Go for two in this one. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. One and0. Could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this. Close but called a ball. Two balls, no strikes. Chris with that distraction and a speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter count. In the air out towards left center, makes the catch. Runner tagging from third. He’s in to score on the sack fly. And they lead by four. Sometimes all you got to do is your job and don’t over complicate things. Keep it simple. Runner and third, less than two outs. Put the ball in play and a nice job with the sack fly. And now it’s Bookie Betts one for two. Fast for a strike. If he’s going to steal second, you want him to go early in the count. That way he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate. Go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. One run, one hit, one error, and one left. Onto the top of the fifth we go. It’s the Dodgers four and the A’s nothing. Ready now for the fifth inning. Gorella steps in. Gonellin back to work and first offering is fouled off. Ursella 33 years old and he’s a native of Colombia. Sharp grounder that’s through for a base hit. So a runner aboard to start the inning. He wasn’t able to elevate it, but he put a great swing on it right on time, good balanced approach, and just blasted it through the infield. So, the lineup flips over now. Here’s the leadoff hitter for the A’s, Jacob Wilson. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Liner caught at second. That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well. I know it didn’t produce a hit, but he made solid contact and that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate. So, up next, Brent Rooker, a former first round pick, and he’s really turned into a nice everyday player. and a big swing and a miss. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. Usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. They get it in quickly. So, first and second now, one out. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. So digging in Tyler Soderstrom and a foul ball fires. Just missed with that back door breaking ball. If he gets a swing and miss or called strike, 02 count. Instead, it’s 1-1. Look for him to go back to that pitch later in this at bat. That one clubed out towards left center. That’ll be extra bases. One run is in. Another scores. Two runs in on the play and it’s now a two-run game. Well, here we are. Third time through the order and this is where we see the OPS jump up. Manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner than he anticipated. And I think Dave Roberts is coming out of the dugout. Tony Gonelin gives way. Not his best performance, but he leaves with the lead. And we’ll get a new arm into the game after this. So the Dodgers have a new arm on the mound. Show Otanati still pretty early in the ball game. So this bullpen has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs. Kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. One out, runner at second. And here’s the catcher, Shay Langalers. popped up. Smith under it. Pulls it down and there’s two gone. Now batting rightielder Miguel. Here’s Miguel and Duhar. That’s in there. It’s 0 and one. Otani. He’s kind of a prototypical bullpen arm in today’s game. Electric stuff that results in a ton of strikeouts in a tough spot like this. That is a big time benefit. As a hitter, when a guy like this comes into the game, you feel like he’s standing on top of you, and it’s just attack mode coming right at you, expecting to get a swinging miss. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Anthony Bonda looks to be getting ready for manager Dave Roberts. Knack also throwing. Here’s a one-two. Fights it off. He’ll see another. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Sodestrom stands at second with two gone on the ground and that chance handled boots it to first but no chance to get him. We’ll see how they score it. Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. So up next, Nick Curts. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Swing and a tapper that rolls foul. Andy Otu cut on and lifted in the air. Confor coming in on it, squeezes it and that’s the third out. But they’ll pick up a couple runs here. Both coming on this two-run double. It’s now 42. Back after this on the show. Back here at Chavez Ravine ready to go for the last half of the inning. And now Freddy Freeman. Freeman on the mound. He had a little trouble back in the first, but it’s been a different story the rest of the way. Really settled into this outing nicely right through there for a strike. Two balls, one strike. That one off the mark and a count is three and one. That one misses. So a lead off walk. Tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. Manager out of the dugout now. And it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Luis Severino out of the game. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. So, a new pitcher on the mound for the A’s, Oaldoid. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpin can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. And up to the plate is Will Smith. And he swings and lifts one to deep center field. Going back. Holds it in on the warning track. Now batting third baseman Maxy. Here comes that funky Muny to the plate. He is very much your typical power hitter. I’d say he falls into the three true outcomes category. Well, we’ve seen more and more of that lately. The ability to drive the ball to slug is getting heavily favored over any discipline or strikeout concerns. Wow. Just a beautiful back door slider right there. If you’ve got any chance of hitting that pitch, you have to wait until the absolutely last millisecond. Just a tough pitch to hit and not an easy one to throw either. Now one and one. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. That’s right. Swing. Get a ball popped up. Urella. Come on. He’s there. He’s got it. Two down. Now batting right fielder Andy P. So two down now and here is Andy Pahes. That’s outside and that’s ball one. Fouled off left side. All right, Dodgers. Close but called the ball. Two and one and misses inside. He swings and fouls one off. 3-2, two out, runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. fouled off again and it remains three and two and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Three balls, two strikes to count. Battling here as he fouls it away. Three and two. Payoff pitch. That one back up the middle and it gets through. Freeman headed for third and now they’ll have runners on the corners with two away. Well, wore him down after an extended played appearance. It ends with a knock. At that point in bat for a hitter when you’ve seen that many pitches, you’ve gotten a look, you’ve fouled off pitches. So, the confidence level is extremely high. And it seems like when you go that deep into an at bat, the hitter usually comes out on top. Confor at the plate and takes high there. Runners on first and third. Two away. Last half of inning number five. line to left and it stays fair. One run across. Here comes Pahz around third. He’ll score. Two runs are in. Gets the job done as he brings home a pair. That was a thing of beauty. He may have been a little behind the pitch, but by getting that barrel into the hitting zone early on in his swing, he was able to meet it and still shoot a line drive down the line and left. Here’s the second base, Hessung Kim. Out in front with the swing. And that is strike one. Confor at second with two down. Just missed. wide drive. Oh, he gloves it. But they’ll pick up a couple runs here. Both coming on this two-run double. It’s now 62. Back here in LA. And now here is Luis Urias. And that’s hammered into right field. That’s a base hit. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Next up for the A’s, JJ Blade. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. All right, Sing, you know I’m a dork. Show Otani, go back to May 5th, 2022 at Fenway Park. He tossed a complete game through 99 pitches. Get this, 81 strikes. It was the most strikes thrown with less than 100 pitches in a game since they started tracking pitch counts. That’s just unreal. Activity in the bullpen for the Dodgers. Landon Knack looks to be getting ready for manager Dave Roberts. Bond the power lefty up as well. Swing and a miss and he struck him out and that’s the first out. Well, that at bat seemed to be over as soon as it started. Three pitch strikeout. You’ve got to be better at the plate right there at least to foul something off. Extend that at bat. Now here’s Gio Urchella the walk and he’s also singled. First pitch just misses. Liner. And this could be trouble. Coming home. He’ll score. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. One out, runner at second. Now it’s the shortstop. Jacob Wilson one for three but a short stop takes a ball that clips the corner. The 1-1 is fouled off. Runner at second here. One gone. And now two and two. Swing and a line drive. Slicing into right field. And that’s a base hit. lead runner puts the brakes on. So now it’s runners at first and third. Everything came together perfectly for him right there. Pretty much a model swing on that one as he ripped it into the opposite field gap. And I’m sure he’s going to be watching that one back on video because that’s the kind of swing you want to bottle. So many positives that led to that knock. Now, let’s see if they can string something together, make it a little more interesting. Brent Rooker getting ready to hit and that is out of play. went with the sweeper, but it misses. Swings and misses. And the count one and two. Big pitch right here. He’s going to try to make a pitch. It’s going to produce a strikeout or a ground ball double play. Here’s a high-fly ball out to center. Outman, he makes the grab. Runner tags from third. He’s in on the sack fly. And now just a two-run deficit. Well, he’s always capable of losing one over the fence. He might have just missed it right there, but a good job to drive in that run from third. Now the left fielder Tyler Soderstrom bottom of the zone and a called strike. outside and the count is one and one. Fought off foul with the tying run at the plate and we’re the top half of the six. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another two outs way upstairs. The countdown now two and two. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. Two runs, three hits, no errors, and one left. 91 and two scheduled to hit in the home half of the sixth. It’s the Dodgers six and the Athletics four. Well, we go bottom six. Leading off James Outman. James Outman. Highf fly ball on that one. Curling foul down the right side. Swing and a foul back and that’s out of play. Swing and a miss. Had him out front for the strike out. I think he might have gotten away with one right there. That was a very hitable pitch right over the heart of the plate. And I know that batter is kicking himself right now. Would like to get that pitch again. just pulled the string on it and the deception gets him the K. Swinging a foul out of play. Base is empty, one away here in the bottom of the six. Pitch misses there. One ball, one strike. Swaying at a ball popped in the air and that’ll fall for a base hit. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Here’s Mookie Betts. If you’re trying to keep the line moving, this is the guy you want at the plate. Such a good hitter. Can also flash some power. Let’s go. And that’s outside. Ruer takes off. Bent swings and drives one. This one’s well struck. That one is gone. So he goes yard to left. his seventh home run of the season. It’s 84. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. For a pitcher, the odds are in your favor if you keep that breaking ball down. That time he got punished for it. Hitter just did a really good job of staying within himself and getting the barrel to the baseball. Here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Oswaldo Beido done for the night. We’ll be back in a minute with a new arm on the mound. The left-hander on now. JP Sears bringing in the lefty with a left-handed hitter coming up to hit. Classic bullpen move right here. So, we’ll see how it works out. Base is empty, one away. Freddy Freeman steps to the plate for the Dodgers. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Part of the order coming through now. And with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. Check swing on a 10. Appeal to third. Nope. He held back. This ball’s chopped on the ground. Wilson. Now the throw to first on the run and they get the out. Now batting catcher will Will Smith. The batter now will be Will Smith. With this kind of lead, he can swing freely, try to hit the ball out of the park, do what he loves to do. There’s the strike. Action in the pen down there. Justin Sterner, the rookie right-hander, is getting loose. Two down to inside corner for a strike and a count is 0 and2. Oh, this guy’s so comfortable hitting with two strikes. Even a good pitch early in the at bat if he’s not ready to pull the trigger, he’s not worried if he gets to an 02 count. fouled off and they’ll do it again. Swing and a miss and a change up in the dirt. Langalers gathers, throws to first in time. The two-3 strikeout ends the inning. Mookie bets brings the noise on this home run. It’s now an 84 score. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. We go to the top of the seventh and now the catcher comes up to him. She Langalers and that’s downstairs and that’s ball one. big at bat right here. He did the team thing. Took until he got a strike. Now he’s got to go to work. Shorten up that swing a little bit. Do whatever it takes to get on base. So a foul ball makes it one and two. And there’s a ball. That one just missing inside and a full countdown. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. Boo gets talked about a lot, but a good high fast ball in a two strike situation, it’s just become such a problem for hitters in more recent years. I mean, with all of the emphasis by pitchers on developing that spin rate, having a good grip on the baseball, those high fast balls, they kind of look like to the hitter that they’re rising, even though they’re not, but they’re not decreasing in velocity and spin rate. So, very difficult to get the barrel on it. Smith puts it away for the out. And there’s two down. Two down, base is empty. Next up for the A’s, Nick Curts. fouls one off out of play back to our left. That one catches the zone and it’s 0 and two. Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. A’s go quickly and quietly there. They’re unable to make a dent in an 8-4 deficit. And welcome back to the ballpark. Set for the last half of the seventh. Here comes Max Muny. M a little bit high and it’s one and0. You know, these Dodgers really impressing me with the quality of their bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work. The success they’re have and now this one’s a rocket to right way back there. Gone. His second of the year. And they tack one on the board. It’s 94. That one just sounded different. It might have been the loudest moment yet. Man, my ears are ringing. I can feel that swing from the booth. That’s as big as it gets right there. You take advantage of a mistake. That is an ultimate. Here it is. Watch it. I’m going to jog around the bases. And now the right fielder Andy Pahes put together a great at bat last time. Really battled. Ended up with the base hit. swing and a popup foul territory for the catcher and out number one on the grab. Anytime you can put eight runs up on the board at this point in the game, you know, there have been some really good approaches at the plate and clearly they’re a confident lineup right now. And here’s Michael Conforto and first offering is fouled off. One out, base is empty and a run in here near the bottom of the seventh. And that misses and it’s one and one. outside with a breaking ball. And that one hammered that skips over the fence. So, it’s an automatic double. The automatic double kind of feels like enjoying cruise control in your car. Boo. You don’t need to keep the pedal down as you cruise into second base. Just no worries in the world. You know what? He put a really good swing on that one. Now it’s the second baseman Hess Kim 0 for three in this one. Swaging a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. Conforto the runner at second with one away and ball one. One and one. Fly ball center field. Leed. He’s got it. And there’s two away. Now batting center. So a man aboard and now James Outman. That misses the zone. Ball one. All right, just missed. Runner at second. Two down. To the right side. Tosses to first. That ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. But the solo shot stretches their lead even further. It’s opened up now 94. Major League Baseball is on the show. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Landon Knack. He’s got a wicked breaking ball in his arsenal and it’s definitely one of his go-to pitches when he needs an out. Here’s the second base, Luis Urias. Second baseman Luis Urias swinging a ground ball up the middle. What a stop. The throw in time. Got him. Oh, we talked about how the ball is coming out of a pitcher’s hand. The way it comes out of his hand as an infielder. Wow. Really impressive. Here’s the center fielder, JJ Blade. Nack the 6’2 righty 27 years old and he was a second round pick in 2020. The Dodgers leading by five and we’re in the top of the eighth. just missed fouls. One off. Two and two. One down. Base is empty. Popped up to the left into foul ground. Has room and he makes the catch. Now batting third base Gioella. Two outs. Base is empty. Here’s the third baseman Gioella. First pitch misses and another ball. That one missed. Next offering is in for a strike. Line drive rip down the left side towards the left field corner. Makes the turn and heads for second. Pulls in with a double. Third hit for him today. Having a really nice game here. That’s his second extra base hit. When you connect and it jumps off your bat like that, you’re thinking double at the very least. Put a great swing on it and man, he wasn’t fooled at all. So, runner at second, two down. And now the shorts stop, Jacob Wilson. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Hey, ripped on the ground to second. The throw to first and that is the inning. The A’s strand one. They trail it here 94. Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. TJ McFarland. And with the big deficit on the scoreboard, he almost has to just put that out of his mind. Every outing matters for relievers in their numbers, but I think it’s tough to get up for this type of appearance the same way you would for one in a close game. Rojos leading things off and takes a strike. Swing and a miss as he chases that one darting out of the zone. And that’s a strike out looking. He’s got to be frustrated with that call. Here’s Betts. He’s already homerred in this game. Sing, you talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good, but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays right through there for a strike. And because of that big power arm, he’s able to play a little bit deeper, make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner. That’s impressive. And that one ripped to left. Hauls it in for the out. And a couple of quick outs. Man, that’s one of those at bats where you have to remind yourself it’s about the process. He did everything right. right there. Nothing to show for it, but in your mind, you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat. Freeman hits it in the air, dunks one into left. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. Will Smith to the plate. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. And that one is in for a strike. Good pitch. And that’s outside and it’s two and one. Freeman the runner at first with two gone. That one fouled off. Foul ball. Another two- two upcoming. Great RBI spot here. You just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. Sets him down on strikes. A controversial called strike three to end the inning. So the Dodgers leave one. They’re on top, however, 94. All set to start the ninth in this one. Now the A’s designated hitter, Brent Rooker. the designated hitter, Brett Rooker. Nack back to work. That misses. One and0. Well, I think he’s trying to get a feel for where that one missed. I mean, it could have gone either way, but he looked a little shocked for a second there. Next offering upstairs, the Dodgers bullpen with some action. Number 78 appears to be getting loose. Number 86 getting cranked up as well. Strike on the inside corner. Now two and one. Good pitch to hit on a tee up in the zone. I think he was looking for something else right there. Had a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball. Now batting left fieldielder. Tyler Sodro up next for the A’s. Yeah, that’s fouled off. up the middle. Kim on the run. Throw to first. Nicely done for the out. Good slider inside right there. Batter fighting to get there. Just rolled over it. Got the ground ball. Shay Lang. So they’re down to their final out. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Shay Langalers. Rips one to right. Base hit. Miguel Anduhar up next for the A’s. Fast ball for a strike at 95. They’re down to their final strike. The A’s down to their final strike. Swing and a bouncer out to short on the run. Sends it over to first and that’ll do it. I don’t care if you’re a top team or you’re a middle of the pack team. Every ball club wants to be dominant at home. Winning a game like this just helps to boost the confidence and makes you look forward to coming out again for the next one. 94 our final score. Dave Roberts and company celebrate in the dugout. For Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show, thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
