  1. Here’s the story I know.  Yes, Reggie grew facial hair and refused to shave it.  The A’s had the same facial hair guidelines as every other team at the time.  The rest of the team was miffed and decided to address it in proper Oakland A’s fashion……they ratted him out to Finley.  Catfish: “Mr. Finley, Reggie Jackson has facial hair, LOT’S of facial hair ….and we don’t think it’s fair”.  “Oh really???” Charlie responded.  And he didn’t punish Reggie, he offered a $300 check to every player who would grow a mustache in the ensuing month and show it off at a father’s day promotion “Mustache Day”. Ken Holtzman said “for $300 I’ll grow hair on my feet!”
Men who came to the game sporting a mustache got in free.  If you were wearing a fake, I don’t think they just go and rip at your stache to see if you’re fake, so you likely got away with it…..for me at 11?…..”not so fast kid”.
Nobody, even Charlie couldn’t have predicted what would transpire as the players, and Williams too….also grew long hair to match and they turned into the Mustache Gang…..a live action “hair bear bunch”…..a protest march.  It cultivated the swagger that defined the dynasty.
