Orlando Magic’s offseason HINGES on key decision with young prospect, struggling veterans
The Orlando Magic have a lot of big decisions to make this off season. Their ability to make deals depends on how they value and how they evaluate three key players. Those players today on Locked On Magic. You are Locked on Magic, your daily Orlando Magic podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. And you are indeed locked on Magic. Today is May 15th, 2025. My name is Philip Rossik. I’m the senior writer over at Orlando Magicaily.com. You can of course follow me on Twitter, phipr_omd, and on blue sky, phipr. On today’s episode of Lockdown Magic, we talked a lot about who the Magic should target, but we’ve talked a little bit about the other side of that equation, what the Magic have to offer, why the Magic’s ability to do things this off season depends on how they evaluate three key players and the role they will play moving forward. We’re going to get to that coming up here in just a moment. But first, we want to thank you again for making Lockdown Magic part of your day every day. No matter when you listen to us, whether we’re first whether you’re first listen in the morning, whether you listen right when we upload, we truly appreciate you making Lockdown Magic part of your day every day. And if you’re one of our everydayers, we doubly appreciate you. Thank you for tuning in every Monday through Friday and sometimes on the weekends when news breaks um throughout the season. Truly appreciate all the listens, all the likes, all the comments, everything. Thank you for making Lockdown Magic part of your day every day. The Lockdown Podcast Network your team every day. There’s obviously a long list of players that Orlando Magic fans would like to get. Whether you’re going for the big names, your Trey Youngs, your John Barance, maybe even now your Darius Garland, um as a potential target for the Orlando Magic, or whether you’re thinking more like me, more low lower scale, your uh Anthony Simons, a little bit on the high end actually with his salary. um your Colin Stons, your your Kobe Whites, your Malik Monks, your Austin Reeves. No matter which direction you’re thinking the Magic should go this offseason, the Magic have made it clear they are going to make moves this offseason, they’re going to be aggressive. They’re going to be assertive. They’re going to sacrifice some future assets to go get the kind of players that can help dramatically improve this team now to make this team more competitive. for the postseason, for the playoffs. That’s ultimately where we’re heading. That’s ultimately where we want to go as a team and where this this team wants to be. It’s all part of obviously the kind of same question and the same thing. Um, but no matter who you target, you run into this wall, this impediment. What do the magic give up? What are the magic willing to sacrifice? to make these kinds of deals happen. And so, while it’s easy to say, oh, I want this player. Go get this player, you got to ask yourself, what are you willing to give up? Now, as we did a whole three episodes with Keith Smith last Friday, last Monday, uh, on Monday, and Tuesday, go listen to that. We’re going to dive into some of the topics that we discussed in a little bit more detail, add some numbers, add some thoughts to those. As Keith Smith said during that three-day podcast, the three day the three episode podcast, the Magic can’t be precious with their own assets anymore. The Magic can’t look at their players and be like, “That’s our guy. We can’t give him up.” They, as I mentioned, they’ve got to be ruthless. They’ve got to they’ve got to look at their situation and be willing to give up a player they’ve invested in. Now, that is easier said than done and it takes a lot of careful evaluation. Inevitably, when you get to any of these trade scenarios, when you get to any of these discussions, it really feels like you’re running into three players. And the Magic’s willingness to deal any of those three players is ultimately going to determine what they’re able to accomplish this off season, whether they are able to make the kind of deals they’re looking to make. And like I I think a lot of this hinges on Anthony Black. We could talk about all the other players we want. Anthony Black I think is the player that everything hinges on. If you ask me, the reason why the Magic weren’t willing to do anything at the trade deadline is, as Jeff Waltman said, they were looking for more short-term fixes. They were looking for expiring contracts. They weren’t looking to teak on a lot of long-term money. Um, and again, I I mentioned this to a lot of people. You have to remember at the trade deadline, the Magic the Magic believed they were getting Jaylen Suggs back. If the Magic knew Jaylen Suggs was out for the year on February 6th, I I do think they make a move. I think they do something at the deadline to bolster their roster. They thought the big trade the big trade I know I mentioned this a million times, big trade deadline acquisition for the Magic was always going to be uh getting Paulo and France back and was always going to be getting Jaylen Suggs back. Now, obviously, Jaylen Suggs didn’t come back and that made the trade deadline look a whole lot worse for this team. Um, I think a lot of those decisions came down to the Magic weren’t ready to give up on Anthony Black or not give up on him, but the Magic weren’t willing to include Anthony Black in those conversations. They wanted to stick with Black. They wanted to give him a chance to to to show show off. And look, we could argue about a lot of things. I do think that decision proved to be correct. I I know AB didn’t play the best in the in the playoffs, but Black averaged 9.4 points per game for the season. He nearly doubled his scoring total from his rookie year. He had shooting splits of 42.3, 31.8, 76.1. Not great. Offense still very inconsistent. Defense was great. Magic was still begging him to be more aggressive and and bring that out consistently. After the All-Star break, Black averaged 10.3 points per game. So, little bump up there. Shot 45 and a half% from the floor, 40% from three, and 77.6% from the foul line. The Magic had a 107.1 defensive rating with Black on the floor. That’s two points per 100 sessions better than the team’s overall overall average. And after the trade deadline had a 107.2 defensive rating, 2.4 points per 100 possessions better than the team’s average at that point. AB showed up. Now again, playoffs he struggled. I’m not going to sit here and pretend that you have to take that into consideration as well, but I would argue the decision to hold on to Black was the correct one. He was vital in the team’s uh team’s ability to compete and eventually reach the playoffs. So, I give him a ton of credit. I give him loads of credit for hanging in there and giving the Magic something of value. Now, how does that spin forward? And like this is the and this is why I think again the the offseason is a better time to make these trades. Now you can start sit and think, well, what is the value we attach to this? Where do we see him going? We’ve now had two complete seasons. He’s grown. What do you do with him? And I think the rest of the league is seeing that too and seeing that and thinking that too. I think that is all part of this equation. And inevitably when the Magic enter these trade negotiations, if they’re looking for a starter level player, if they’re looking for a six-man level player, they’re going to look at it and say, “You need to include Anthony Black.” We’re not trading away a valuable rotation player without getting a valuable rotation player back. And you can at least sell a team on or a team that’s maybe rebuilding or a team that’s resetting itself and you’re trying to like pilch their star or pilch a key player from their team. It’s going to say we need to be able to sell the future of what Anthony Black could be. And that’s why AB is so valuable in this trade market. Now, his salary is not he’s on a rookie salary, so that that makes it a little tougher to get that value out. But if you’re trying to trade a contius Pope, who we’ll talk about in a minute, if you’re trying to trade a Jonathan Isaac, who we’ll talk about in a minute, they may say, “We’re not taking on that salary without Anthony Black.” They’re going to have to trade two to get one. maybe trade Goa Batad and Anthony Black together to get I think that would be a 1920 million player math-wise that may be the cost of doing business. And so the Magic have to sit here and think how good is Anthony Black? What do we see of him? I think that this season he his point guard skills didn’t really show and that again raises the question of can you build a team with him. Is is he the right fit for this heat for what this team is trying to do? And that’s obviously a fair question. I I don’t think that that question is unfair to ask. AB is, I think, the hinge of this off seasonason. If the Magic decide, hey, we’re ready, you know, we believe that we could get if we could get a player of this caliber, we will move on for maybe. If not, we’ll hold on to him. They need to find that line because I can guarantee every trade negotiation the Magic are having right now involves Anthony Black. I can guarantee every team in the league that the Magic are talking to have asked about Anthony Black. And as much as the Magic might want to just settle on trading just Cole Anthony or trading just goat or just the two guys I’m going to mention coming up, Anthony Black is the sweetener that could grease the wheel. And so as more than the first round picks honestly and so the Magic have to make this careful evaluation of AB. And look, there’s a lot to like about AB. His defense is excellent. His scoring and his offense really improved this year. I thought I think he had a a really solid rookie season or sophomore season. There’s obviously still work for him to do. I’m not going to pretend otherwise. But but now you have to make decisions. And that’s really at the crux of a lot of this offseason is making some firm and hard decisions about some guys. We’ll talk about another one of those big decisions why the Magic might might be forced to abandon their Jonathan Isaac project. We’ll get to that coming up here in just a moment. We are talking today about the decisions and the players that this off season hinges on. The players that the Magic do not necessarily have clear decisions on, but have to make choices on to affect the change that they say they want to make. This is not teams are not going to gift the Magic great players. To get something good, you’ve got to give up something good. and and at times most of the time you’re kind of trading away your own you’re trying to trade away your junk. You’re going to have to you’re going to have to make some sacrifices. You’re going to have to make some decisions or you’re going to have to take some risks on players to make it work. And it’s all about finding that threshold of risk. Like I mentioned with the Anthony Black conversation, it’s about understanding what is the threshold or what is the kind of player you are willing to trade Anthony Black for. It doesn’t mean you’re giving up on him. It doesn’t mean you’re not invested in him, but you have to be realistic to you about who he is and what he can do. And I think that’s the same for the next guy I want to talk about, and that’s Jonathan Isaac. By Jonathan Isaac’s own admission, this season did not go as planned. The decision for him to put on weight, he he came to camp weighing about 250 pounds, which is 10, 15, 20 pounds heavier than he’d been in previous seasons. And Isaac said throughout the season and said again in exit interviews, the weight affected his mobility. It affected his ability to move. It affected his stamina. It affected his his win, his ability to play for long stretches. This was a disaster season for Jonathan Isaac. It’s not just that he shot only 27%. Even though he averaged two stocks per game, which is the most he’s averaged since 2020, um Isaac Isaac was nowhere near as impactful defensively. Look, I want to make this clear as it wasn’t like Isaac was a nonfactor on defense. Um it wasn’t that Isaac was so bad on defense that he was unplayable. The Magic still had a 106.6 defensive rating with Isaac on the floor. Um, that is still among the best marks on the team. It was two and a half points per 100 possessions, better than the team’s average. But last year, the Magic had a 102.1 defensive rating with Isaac on the floor. And that was 8.7 points per 100 possessions, better than the team’s, you know, pretty good average, top five defense last year. The difference with Isaac this year was that he went from an elite defender to merely a pretty good defender. And again, he he had two stocks per game. He was an impactful defender. he made his presence known and the Magic tried to play him a lot more at backup center. They kind of abandoned that plan and then went back to it toward the end of the season. Um Isaac went in and out of the rotation. The bigger issue is he played only 15 minutes per game. So while he played 71 games and got through the season healthy again, his inability to play for long stretches rendered him pretty ineffectual. And then eventually it was, you know, he couldn’t shoot like it was, you know, shooting 27% from three. He shot worse from three than Fron did this year. Um it Fron obviously impacts the game in other ways. Excellent defender as well. It was tough to play Jonathan Isaac for long stretches. You had to kind of meter his minutes out. And that’s obviously a very very difficult place to live, especially when you’re a bench player, especially when you’re a role player. Even last year, look, Isaac’s offense hasn’t been great his entire career. um you know 2020 he showed some hints of being a bit a better and more consistent offensive player that was a lifetime ago. That was several injur several leg injuries ago. But for Isaac to fall from elite to very good defense changed everything about him. And so again and and and then you add on top of that the the salary concern. He was the highest paid player on the team this year. I don’t think that stuff matters as much as fans do, but it’s not a good look. Let’s let’s just leave it at that. It’s not a good look. So, Isaac, we know has this elite defensive potential. And the question now becomes, what is the threshold? Are you willing to bet that Isaac loses the weight, gets back to being what he was, and now with another healthy summer, is able to work on his shot enough that he can play more? If that happens, it’s really hard to give up on Isaac. It’s really hard to trade Isaac unless it is for something very, very good and very, very important. I said this a bunch during the rebuild era. Um, Isaac was the one player on the team with an elite skill. Now, I don’t think that’s the case anymore. I think Paulo is an elite scorer. I think Fron is an elite scorer. The Magic have more elite players. And look, the reason why I could talk yesterday, despite being a seven seed and a 500 team, that the Magic could compete for the Eastern Conference Finals next year, not as a joke, is because of those two players. Uh let’s let’s make that very very clear. Paulo and France will make this team competitive on a baseline as long as they are healthy, which no reason to think they won’t be. freak injuries. They both they both been iron men throughout their careers until last season. As long as they are healthy, the Magic are a 500 team minimum with Paulo and France. They they are a playoff team at minimum with those two players, but that’s not what we’re going for obviously. And it’s very easy to see how quickly the Magic could become even better and even greater with those players. And so the question then becomes where does Jonathan Isaac fit into this? Jonathan Isaac is on a three-year 15 million three or four year $15 million contract. Um I think it’s three years three more years um with all those injury protections with all that and he is someone that again you can sell to other teams. This guy is an elite defender. He’s got the potential to be an elite defender. The Magic should be treating him and trading him as if he is that best version of himself. The Magic should not accept anything less than a sixth man of the year type player for Jonathan Isaac. But that’s the thing. Even if the Magic are willing to concede, all of the struggles this year were because of the weight game, a mistake that they made. Now they have to sit there and think, are we still in on this project? This was Jeff Welman’s first draft pick. Remember, this is a guy that this team has sat with, believed in through really, really horrendous injuries issues. Are the Magic going to be ruthless enough to say, “The project’s over. We need to move on.” Or the Magic going to clutch their pearls and hold on to him because they still believe. again like Anthony Black, they need to find that they need to find the the the window to move him. They need to set the line. We are not trading him for a player that we evaluate as better than this than this role. This is what we’re looking to do with the Jonathan Isaac contract because again, his defense is gamechanging. There is no doubt about it. Even last year when he wasn’t as good, when he wasn’t elite, his defense is gamechanging. It’s figuring out the right way to use him and getting the right offense for him. If the Magic don’t believe they can do that with their current group, then it is certainly time to move on. But again, to get something good, you got to give up something good. To get high salary players, you got to give up high salary players. And when you look at this roster, Jonathan Isaac’s salary is one of the most movable, one of the most convincible deals that the Magic can move and something they must consider. Just like they must consider, it’s time to abandon another one of their plans. Why contemp whether the Magic should believe he will bounce back. We’ll get to that coming up here in just a moment. If you listen to this podcast throughout the year, you know that I really held out belief in Utavius Caldwell Poop and it was frustrating to say the least that the the pieces just did not come together. Uh, look, uh, the number one comment that I got from a lot of people was, “The Magic did not do enough this summer because they didn’t add shooting.” And I’d sit there and I’d go, “No, no, they they tried. They did. Contavius Cwell Pope was one of the best shooters in the league. Shot better than 40% from three in three the last four seasons. Shot 39% in the other. Excellent defender. Brought that excellent defense to Orlando. He just didn’t make shots. Just plain and simple. You look at his shot profile, you look at all the shots that he got. Sure, the quality of passing might be down because he wasn’t getting it from Jokic, but he he made shots or he got the same kind of shots that he was m he was taking um in Denver. According to tracking data from NBA.com, Calwell Pope made only 39.1% of his 2.0 zero wide open three-point attempts per game this season. He made 44% on 2.2 last season. It’s hard to reconcile that. And he didn’t take that many more open uh three-point attempts. 4.1 three-point attempts per game in 2024. Shot 40.6% on those. Last season for the Magic, 34.2% on 4.3 attempts per game. If there was a problem with contavius Ko Pope and and I admitted this and I thought about this when the Magic went out to sign him, it was that he wasn’t enough of a volume shooter. The Magic needed volume more than they needed proficienc than than like efficiency. They needed to get more attempts up. And again, the Magic did that this year and that was something that decreased as the season went on as they struggled more with threes. But the Magic wanted to take more threes. They made they did take more threes and that’s a good thing. I I still think the Magic need to be about 35 36 37 threes per game. They were at what 33 34 this season. They’re 32 31 last year and they ended up at 31 in the playoffs because um again playoffs were just the playoffs. Um there’s a lot of reason to believe this season was just an aberration and that Gavius Cwell Pope will provide the kind of shooting and spacing the Magic have hoped for. Um, that is that is absolutely true. And so there’s a big part of me that’s like, run it back. You know, be open to to moving him at the deadline, but run it back. Let’s get a healthy Jaylen Suggs in. Get a healthy Paulo Vancero in, healthy France Vagar in for a whole season. Let’s see if the reason that Kenny struggled so much is just all the instability around him. you know, lack of a clear point guard, maybe not being able to play off of the guys that he thought he was going to play off of. And look, he still should have made shots. He still got open shots. But let’s see if some stability helps. Let’s see if comfort helps. And if it doesn’t, then you move on. Like I But again, like we’ll get there. I I still believe Kenny’s going to have a good season next year. I think he will bounce back. He’ll his he may not ever reach 40% again, but he’ll be a solid three-point shooter. certainly would would have been that certainly shooting 38 37% would have been enough for the Magic. You know, they they take that with how poorly they shot this year and how poorly he shot this year. We saw during those last 18 games when he shot 40 plus percent from three shot nearly I think he shot like 46% from three in those games. How much that changed the team and obviously then he disappeared in the playoffs. Shot sub 30 in the playoffs which is a bigger problem actually. And but this again gets back to that question. What is the threshold? What are you looking to trade for Kavius Cwell Pope? Now I would argue the Magic should be looking for a starter level player. I would argue the Magic need a volume three-point shooter next to Jaylen Suggs. They just they just need someone who can hit a little bit off the dribble, can score a little bit off the dribble, which conte. Magic tried to have him attack a little bit more, but that’s that’s not his game. The Magic need more players who attack off the bounce. And so I do think either moving Contavius Calwell Pope or shifting him into Gary Harris’s role. And I know that’s a lot for $22 million a year. That’s part of the consideration here. But I think if you you shifted Contavius Cwell Pope to that Benrol that Gary Harris played, that’s an upgrade over Gary Harris. All due respect to Gary Harris. Gary was really good toward the end of the season especially. That’s an upgrade over him defensively. That’s an upgrade over him offensively with his shooting. And I think that would benefit him a lot. Now again, you’re you’re sitting here saying like, “We didn’t pay him $66 million. We’re not paying him $66 million to come off the bench.” That’s burning a hole in your pocket. I agree completely. And that’s why I think there’s a very good chance the Magic do move contavius Cwell Pope this summer. Not only that, it’s a matching salary thing. The $22 million, you know, you need to get value for that with with the cap situation. The Magic are in. So, if the Magic could parlay Contavius Calwell Pope into a 20 plus million dollar player, even a $25 million player with another role player on the side, that’s that’s the big move this offseason. That’s the move you make this off season. Like I said, I am still a believer in Kenny. I think this year was an aberration. I think he will have a bounceback season next year. And if you believe that, that makes it a little bit harder. That changes the considerations a little bit. That makes you think, huh, maybe we do have to reconsider some things. Maybe we do have to bet a little bit on ourselves, which the Magic did, and it didn’t turn out so great this year, but they did. This is all part of the conversation. Right now, it’s right now the Magic are at the draft, and we’re going to talk draft stuff tomorrow. Right now, the Magic at the draft combine beginning to get a sense of where the league is sitting. They have to spend, you know, we have six weeks till draft night. Like I said, draft night’s the night that a lot of this stuff’s going to happen. The Magic have to spend the next four weeks really digging into their roster and figuring out what these lines are. What would they be willing to trade these three players specifically for? Because these three players are the players everyone around the league is going to want. Goabat is not going to do it by himself. Cole Anthony is not going to do it by himself. Wendell Carter with his contract not going to do it by himself. It’s Anthony Black, Jonathan Isaac, and Contavius Calwell Pope and what the Magic are willing to move them for that’s going to determine what the Magic are able to accomplish this off season. And the Magic have to be able to make those decisions carefully and clearly to move themselves forward. I want to thank you all again for listening to today’s episode of Lockdown Magic. The Orlando Magic face several critical offseason decisions as they begin to shape their future and build the contending team they believe they can be. All of those start with carefully evaluating three key players that could help them in the trade market.
Anthony Black is a promising prospect who played well in his second season. But his disappointing postseason and questions about his fit with the team could make him available in the offseason. He is likely the player most teams will demand be part of any major trades.
The same could be for Jonathan Isaac and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope after disappointing seasons. They could be due for a bounceback next year though and the Magic must carefully assess their value and what they are willing to acquire to give them up.

❤ Go Magic 🎩 ❤
I really love Walter Clayton Jr. For us
I do not envy Weltman this summer. Tough decisions and not much time to do it
Anthony Black as a pg didn’t register … even 1 assist the whole postseason
Trade him
I am not against trading ab butt we shouldn't unless we have to. We should be copying the blueprint the Spurs did. They were able to trade for Fox without giving up anything significant
Can't get rid of Kcp or ji both are coming off a down year and will most likely be better next season plus ji will be cheaper as his contract is top heavy the people we need to trade are Goga Cole ab and sign and trade Gary if possible it will be hard to trade mo coming off an injury but I thought we could make a strong run if we can just stay healthy and add a quality pg like a sexton mccullum or even Williams from the mavs
Trading AB or Jett only proves that Weltman didn’t get it right in the draft and missed on other players we could have gotten instead
The reason we’re not a serious franchise is we marry our players.
I low key despise … JI
and the fan boys who continue to excuse his bs
JI no shit coming in 25lbs pounds of fat heavier isn't going to make u a better athlete who can play longer mins.
People did him a major pr favor by acting like that 25lbs was muscle … yeah not over one summer
Not only did he pig out over the summer
He neglected working on his shot
Fuxk JI
GET HIM OFF MY TEAM
The Magic have never used/developed Isaac to his potential. On offense he just stands around along with other players watching Franz and Paolo. Mosley's unimaginative offense must be fixed. More movement, passing, and penetration. Isaac is a match up nightmare with the right offense, right team. Magic's decision to add weight on him was the worst thought process to consider. Brings up the medical team input/possible incompetence.
Hope we are talking to Boston who will want to trade. Pritchard is the volume shooter to target plus taking a big salary, I think Porzingis (2 years left). Plus I read Boston may have to add a first round pick. But part of me wants them to pay the $580 million salary as a repeat offender.
Giannis for Franz, JI, Cole Anthony, and 2- 1st rounders. Giannis was discovered, drafted and developed by Hammond and Weltman. Giannis still loves those guys til this day and he’s also big on loyalty. Dallas moved Luka, Minnesota moved Karl Anthony Towns, yet some fans are crying about the possibility of losing a “close” to being an All-Star player. I am a fan of Franz, but for the right player in exchange, the Magic have to pull the trigger. Other national publications are saying the same thing.
