So you got to be ready, zoned in in the spot where you think you’ve got the best chance and jump all over. It might be the first pitch in the at bat. So you better walk up there ready from the jump. He may lean on one or two pitches depending on how things are going and how things are working. But if he can control four or even five of those offerings, look out hitters. And for hitters, you almost feel like beyond just the pitcher coming at you, you’ve got this other force coming against you. So important to try to get on top of the ball in terms of hitting line drives. You know, maybe really hard ground balls with a good exit velocity that’ll get you a base hit because it’s very frustrating. You just hit one on the screws, think it’s going to go out of the ballpark and an outfielder is camped underneath it in front of the warning track. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. This is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively. Fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate. Good game caller, good at framing, but it’s that big arm that really stands out. Otani back to work. Yeah, that’s fouled off. When you got a catcher like this guy with a big arm like that behind the plate, it really shuts down the running [Music] game. And that one is lifted in the air. Edmond going after it. Drops into the glove and a quick out number one. That fifth first base. And here’s the first baseman, Tyler Sodstrom. All right, sing. You know I’m a dork. Show Otani. Go back to May 5th, 2022 at Fenway Park. He tossed a complete game through 99 pitches. Get this, 81 strikes. It was the most strikes thrown with less than 100 pitches in a game since they started tracking pitch counts. That’s just unreal. And that’s in there at the knees. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. Now it’s the second baseman, Zack Gellof. Gellof starting up the middle at second. 25 years old. He’s one of the few Major League Baseball players born in the state of Delaware. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Nice line drive met out front, but just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the outfield. Runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. So here’s Brown at the plate. That one fouled off. Well, they’re looking to get on the board first here after that clutch two out double made this inning interesting. Gellof on at second with two down. Next offering is in for a strike. Well, we call that keyh holding. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. You don’t stay tall on the backside and you’re really not even able to make contact. If you do, many times it’s a popup. Will Smith in now takes ball one off the plate. They happened on different days, but he still became the first Red Sox player to do it since Jimmy Fox in 1940. Gets the outside corner with that one. Man, that pitch was dotted. And here is Jacob Wilson. That one the other way. Oh, he loves it. That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well. I know it didn’t produce a hit, but he made solid contact, and that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate. So the batting order turns over. You talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good, but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays right through there for a strike. And because of that big power arm, he’s able to play a little bit deeper, make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner. That’s impressive. So many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches they’re chasing outside of the strike zone. You can’t do much of anything with those locations. And that’s been true again today. swings through that one for strike one. And as a pitcher, when the hitters are swinging at everything, you feel no need to challenge inside the zone. You just keep working the corners and expanding that strike zone and beyond, and they just keep eating right out of your hand. And there’s the ball. One strike. Yeah, that’s in for a strike. I’m sure there’s sometimes where a pitch would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. And they get the out on Smith. With all of the emphasis by pitchers on developing that spin rate, having a good grip on the baseball, those high fast balls, they kind of look like to the hitter that they’re rising even though they’re not, but they’re not decreasing in velocity and spin rate. So, very difficult to get the barrel on it inside. And that’s ball two. And that’s too high. Lawrence Butler waiting in the on deck circle. They can get him up. He’d represent the tying run. I mean, that’s a wellthrown pitch. Tough to do anything with that in terms of getting the hands through and the sweet spot of the bat to the baseball and first offering is fouled off. You’re looking for something you see well that you can handle, but you also have to keep the discipline so that you’re not popping up pitches that are just a little too high.
