The BEST Matchup for the Edmonton Oilers | Oilers Update

Our one big take for today is going to come from our friend Steve Peters. I had him on Daily Face Off live today, the show I host with Frank Saraveali, 10:30 or 10 o’clock Mountain every single weekday on the Daily Face Off YouTube. Um, and I couldn’t let Pety go without asking him. Jets star or yeah, Jets stars, who do the Oilers match up better against? Here’s what he said. I don’t want to let you go without asking you a little bit about the Edmonton Oilers. They punched their ticket to the conference final, third time in four years. When you look at the Oilers against Dallas or Winnipeg, is there one of those two that you think they match up better against? Yeah, I think and people aren’t going to like this. I think they match up better against Dallas. And I right now the Edmonton Lawers are the best team in the Western Conference. I cannot believe I’m saying that to this is something I I’ve picked against the Edmonton Loaders in the last six series. And I’m not kidding. I I’ve said they’re going to beat now. This is the best Edmonton Oilers have played in the last year and a half in the playoffs. They’re defending better than they have. They’re protecting the house better than they have. They’re eliminating the opponent’s rush better than they have through the neutral zone. This Edmonton Oiler team is no longer just dry saddle and McDavid. This is a full team effort from 200 feet. This is an impressive team. And I did say that they’re going to have to get back to Skinner and they did and he’s been just okay, man. Skinner’s been lights out. Skinner has been the guy that they saw in in the finals a year ago and they needed that to happen. No offense to Connor to to to Kelvin Pickard, but they needed Skinner if they want to get to the next level. I I think this team right now, their way they can move the puck up the ice quickly, but more importantly, the way they’re defending as a group of five in front of their goalender makes them an incredibly dangerous team. Balanced scoring like they haven’t seen before. You’ve got four lines they can roll out in any situation. This Edmonton Oiler team is for real and I think they’re going to be a threat to either team. The Winnipeg Jets I I think may give them their hands full and partly because of of Hellele, but but I I think it is going to be Dallas Edmonton in the Western Conference Finals. Oil is in five. Oh my god. I had to submit my DFO picks today for like our look ahead series that you got to do. If the Oilers play the Jets or if the Oilers play the Stars like oil in what? And I said six against Dallas, five against Winnipeg. Guys, I could just watch that clip over again. When he goes Oil, does he say best team in the Western Conference? Sure does. Best team in the league. Steve, you heard? I think they are. Like, I really do. Like so I did some more stats yesterday. I have no graphic for this one. That’s okay. So last season going into the second round. Did I tell you these already? No. Leon Dryidle. So the Oilers had 46 goals at this point last season. Played one extra game of course. Leon Dryidle contributed to 52% of the goals going into the second round of the playoffs last year. Damn. Conor McDavid 46. Evan Bousard 43. This year, McDavid now leads the team. He’s contributed to 40% of the goals. He’s that far under 50%. Bryce Idol 37% of the goals. Evan Bousard at 28%. Last year, they had four defensemen in the top 10 of scoring. Bousard, Kulak, Echol, and Cece. This year, obviously, just Evan Bousard is in he’s third on the team, and everyone else is a forward. I think we did this yesterday where I said only one player was like minus, and it’s Jeff Skinner. It’s crazy. It’s Those numbers are unbelievable. They scored three less goals this season, by the way. Can I give you maybe like a little follow-up to on some numbers we talked about yesterday? So, yesterday we talked about how with McDavid and Dry Cidle off the ice, the Oilers are just playing such better hockey. Last year’s playoffs, this is every round of of the playoffs at 5v5. Okay, with McDavid and Dryidle on the ice, the Oilers outscored the other team 9 to4 with both of them on the ice. And then with McDavid on, it was 19-10. With just Dryidle, they actually got outscored. But with both of them off the ice, the Oilers only got 45% of the shot attempts and they got outscored 21 to 12 minus 9 with both Conor McDavid and Leon Dry settle off the ice and only getting 45% of the shot attempts. You want this year’s numbers? Yes. 16 to9. They’re plus 7. That is a 16goal swing already. And not to say it couldn’t get worse, but what reason do you have to believe it’s worse? The shot attempts are at 48%, but they are outshooting the other team. and the expected goals for 55%. I mean, the numbers are unbelievable. And then the other side of it, too, with both McDavid and Dry Settle on the ice, they’ve still been just as good. They’re plus four. They’ve outscored the other team 10 to six. So, again, Dallas, I just don’t think as much. And I mean, here’s a hot take. Here we go. Second one. Remember when we looked at that Vegas blue line before the series and we were like, “Holy shit.” I remember Doug saying we needed a miracle to win. I remember that as well. Um, but I remember looking at that Vegas blue line and being like, they have Hannneathan on one pair and Theodore on the other and Petrangela on the other and all these name recognizable guys and it’s like, oh my god, they might just run our show and how is Edmonton going to get goals with one of these elite defenseman always on the ice? I feel like we’re doing that a little bit a little bit with this Dallas forward group where you’re like Jamie Ben and Jason Robertson on the third line like Dadenov’s on the fourth line. Oh my god. Let me give you the numbers in these playoffs. 5v5 when the Stars two best players who are undoubtedly Rupe Hint and Miko Randon in this with Hint and Rantin on the ice they are outscoring the other team 7 to2 with just hints on the ice it’s 000 at five on five. No one scored on either direction. With just Rantin it’s 4 to2. So if one of Rantin or Hints are on the ice at five on five in these playoffs and this includes last night’s game the goals are 11 to four for the Dallas Stars plus seven with with one of hints or randon on the ice at five on five 11 to 11 to 4 plus 7 with both of them off they’re getting caved 17 to8 just 46% of the shot attempts 45% of the actual shots 48% of the expected goals so it ain’t bad luck look like Dallas has been shut out twice in Winnipeg series. Mhm. They’re up in the series. I get it. But like it’s it’s a they’re a very very interesting team. I I’m not a believer in them. If you go back and look at shows in the regular season, I wasn’t really a believer of them then either. I think they’re a little bit fraudulent. I don’t want to get ahead of ourselves. Of course, we still have to know if we play them, but I really don’t think it matters. Like I think uh I think May had asked it in the chat like do you line up dry saddle next to the the rans line? I man if it sounds like if you showed on that line you might sweep them straight up like and that sounds might sound arrogant. I honestly don’t think and we don’t want to get that high but and I don’t think they will sweep them obviously but the way this team is playing like a knob block and his adjustments like I just think they’re unbeatable. I really do. Okay. To that stat I say who’s the twoman team now? Okay. Well, right. And when it was Ed and you never hear anyone in the national media going Dallas is a twoman team right now. No, of course. Or if they do, they talk about their depth. Or if they do, they sing the praises of Mo Rantin and that’s it. Whereas when it was the Oilers, it’s so funny how I was always like, “How long can Conor and Leon keep doing this? How long can Connor and Leon keep doing this?” Never get that with Dallas. With the Edmonton Oilers already punching their ticket to the Western Conference Finals, it has now turned into a waiting game with the Oilers still unsure of who they will face in round 3. While the Winnipeg Jets remain down 3-2 in the best of 7 series there are still question marks. The Dallas Stars have had their offense largely carried by Mikko Rantanen and Roope Hintz while lacking their regular secondary scoring.

On the other hand the Winnipeg Jets have had a balanced approach offensively throughout the playoffs despite their Vezina caliber goalie struggling over periods of time over the Playoffs.

Today, Tyler and Liam broke down what makes each of the two teams a interesting matchup and which they feel the Edmonton Oilers are more built to beat on their route to back to back Stanley Cup Finals births.

  1. I don't want to jinx Edmonton, but I really like their chances against the Stars. If Oettinger gets really hot, he could steal several games so best go in with an underdog, nothing to lose, everything to prove mindset.

  2. Doesn't matter who is next, if the balance is adopted by all teammates . this will be a double double sweep.
This is if they want to earn it to focus together on the only outcome that matters " 2025 Stanley Cup Champions " they will absolutely dominate and shut down every attempt of players that get in our way of attaining this goal.

Scoring will be insane , defending will be un challenged allowing back to back victories of the level of THE DYNASTY LEGACY 2025 OILER DOMINATION TEAM " that they are destined to become if they all allow themselves to unleash the ability , effort and defense of each other and our zone, they will be honored by a next level team achievement not seen in a decade . This team was designed for exactly this undertaking if they choose it, there is no one , no team will be able to counter this new depth of team desire to deliver Stanley home to Edmonton and the fans, reestablishing The CITY OF CHAMPIONS

unmatched and can't beat at our groups game tactical strategic formula of complete full team cohesion is the Oilers that will not be beat. Look for the team you have never imagined that they truly will be.

  3. Both the peg and dallas pose different problems for the oil. Otter is on a heater 5on5 which is where the oils bread and butter is this playoffs. They took out colarado which has alot of firepower, theyre up 3-2 against the jets who is a very defensive team with good puck handleing. Theyre much better than last year and skinner stole game 6 last year lets be real, can he do it again when otters on a hot streak too?

Then the jets are reaally good at keeping it out of the blue paint and grabing turnovers. When its in the blue paint its not there for long and ts going back te other direction. They also set uo tic tac toe plays and skinner has slow lateral Movements not ideal. None of the jets vs stars games felt too tilted tbh its been alot closer than the scoreboard shows but agajn otter is on a heater. The downside for jets is hallebuck not playing the best. But he absolutely can steal games, and theyre extremely good on home ice.

Neither one is a pushover and either or can pose bug problems for the oil. The saving grace is the longer the dallas jets series is the more time our team has to rest and heal and the more punishment the other WCF team will be tired and battered. Hopefully jets push it to 7

  4. Dallas played the 2 best teams in the Western Conference this year. The Oilers will be the worst team they play on the way until their 2nd cup this year.

  5. If they play the Jets, expect a repeat of 2021 unless Helllebuyck reverts back to the opening series form. If Stars get through they play a different style of game that Edmonton can exploit more easily

  6. Your team wouldn’t even get out of the FIRST ROUND, if not for an insanely lucky bounce, and MC-DIVE-id diving all game, diving in OT, then diving on the PP to get a 5 on 3. Now you are intentionally running goalies to get another advantage? Do “GREAT TEAMS” do this? Jets in 6. The only reason for that many games, is Bettman rewards your dumb division with a. 1 week tanning siesta, while the Central beats themselves to death. REAL FAIR league? Winnipeg in 4 or 5. Depending if the refs called all the Oilers diving for PP
