And a pleasant good evening one and all. Welcome to Texas Rangers baseball. Tonight, the Rangers play host to the Houston Astros in game two of this four game series, the second battle of 13 for the Silver Booth. Good evening everyone. I’m Matt Hicks along with Jared Sandler. Ken Mendes, our engineer here in Arlington. Larry Flores and Dylan Moore are back at Master Control. Just a sensational ball game to kick off this series yesterday with the Rangers winning one to nothing behind the pitching of Jacob Deg Grom and Sha Armstrong and the hitting of Jake Burgerer whose leadoff home run in the bottom of the sixth was the only run in the ball game. The two teams combined for a total of eight hits as Hunter Brown, the starter and loser for Houston was magnificent in picking up his first career complete game, albeit a complete game loss. And so entering game two of this series, the Rangers are a game ahead of Houston in the standings. Texas coming in at 24 and 21 entering play today, just a half game behind first place Seattle in the American League West. While the Astros sit third in the division at 22 and 21. Two fewer games played than Texas, two fewer wins. They are a game and a half out. Taking a look at our pitching matchup here for this second game of the series on the mound for Houston. 31-year-old right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. who makes just his third start this season. He had four starts at DA and AAA in preparation for coming back to the big club and seeing his first big league action since the 2022 season. McCullers got rocked his last time out and comes in here after two starts at 0 and1 with a 15.75 erra. His counterpart for the Rangers, the 35year-old right-hander Nathan Ivaldi. Ivaldi has been spectacular so far this season for Texas. After nine starts, he’s 4 and2 with a 178 earn run average. here tonight. He makes his 18th career start against these Astros in the regular season. However, it’s the first time he’s facing Houston here at Globe Life Field since early September back in 2023. So, it’s McCullers against Evaldi here in game two of the series. We’re back with a look at your starting lineups and we’ll have the first pitch for you right after this on the Rangers Radio Network. All right, Bruce Springsteen bringing us back here for the starting lineup. Uh want to say a happy birthday to our colleague, our mentor, our friend, the Hall of Famer, Eric Nadell, celebrating a birthday here today. A little ode to Eric with Bruce Springsteen there. All right, let’s take a look at the starting lineups. They’re brought to you by Medical City Healthcare, the destination of choice for healthc care excellence. Leading it off for the Astros, their shorts stop, Jeremy Pñena, followed by Jose Altuve, who is back at second base tonight. Hitting third. At third is Isach Paredus. The cleanup batter, the first baseman, Christian Walker. Batting fifth and doing the catching is Victor Keratini. The number six batter, the designated hitter tonight, Yiner Diaz. Hitting seventh in center field is Jake Meyers. The number eight batter, he’s in left field tonight, Zack Denzo. And batting ninth in right field is Cam Smith. The starting pitcher, the right-hander Lance McCullers against the Astros, Pena Altuve Paredus. Walker Keratini Diaz Meyers Denzo Smith with the right-hander McCullers on the mound for the Rangers. Leading it off at short is Josh Smith, followed by the left fielder Wyatt Langford, and then the designated hitter Jock Peterson. In the cleanup spot, the right fielder, Adoleis Garcia, who just seems to be able to turn it on anytime. The team in the other dugout is wearing the Houston Astros uniform. Batting fifth and playing at second base, Marcus Simeon. Hitting sixth at third is Josh Young. The number seven batter in center field, Evan Carter. Hitting eighth at first base, Jake Burgerer. And batting ninth and doing the catching, Jonah on the mound, the right-hander, Nathan Avaldi. Once again for the Rangers, it’s Smith, Langford, Peterson, Garcia, Simeon Young, Carter Burgerer time with a Valdi on the bump. Nathan is ready to go. He points the glove toward home plate, goes overhead with the wind, and here’s the game’s first pitch. He pours it right down the middle for strike one to the right-handed hitting Jeremy Pñena. So, we are underway with play here tonight. First pitch brought to you by Perimeter Global Logistics. PGL is the official supply chain partner of your Texas Rangers. Visit shipgl.com to get your business in the game. The 01 is fouled back by Pena. And that’ll make it no balls and two strikes. Pñena coming in batting 313 after a one for four performance here last night. Six home runs, 23 runs batted in. Ivaldi waiting here for Pñena to get set in the box. Pitch clock has been reset. And now the 02 and that pitch is outside. So may get one ball and two strikes. If all the enters play today with an earn run average at 1.78. That is fifth best in the American League. Kind of hard to think that a 178 RA is only fifth best. Here’s a ball that’s grounded foul up the third baseline. And so the count will hold. But if Aldi has been better than that here in recent starts over his last four outings, covering a total of 25 innings, he’s given up a grand total of two earn runs. And so his earn run average over his last four starts, a very minuscule 72, the one two swinging a miss. got in to chase a curveball that was just a little bit down just a little bit outside perfectly located. Pñena strikes out and Jared that’s what we have seen from Nathan Evaldi from Jacob Deg Grom from Tyler Mi from Patrick Corbin just outstanding location. Yeah, that was a great pitch. And how about this? Already in one plate appearance Nathan Evaldi has thrown each of his four primary pitches and not hiding anything. First pitch to Jose Altuve. Misses outside for ball one. Kind of crazy in his last start Sunday in Detroit. Ivaldi threw all four of his primary pitches at least 22 times as Altuve lifts one high into the air center field. Carter comes into his right. He’s there and he’s got it. Altuveet retired on two pitches for the second out here in the top half of the first. It brings up Esacho Paradus. Devaldi threw against Detroit his splitter 25 times, his curveball 24 times, his cutter 24 times, and his four seam fast ball 22 times. So you talk about being able to to mix. That’s what Aldi did his last start, and it’s what he’s done pretty much all season, although not to that extreme of mixing. Now here’s Paredus, and he takes a front door curve for strike one. for the hole this season. Evaldi has thrown his splitter and his four seamer about the same about 29% of the time for both pitches. That’s the most that he’s thrown of any of his pitches. His curve at about 22%. The 01 that pitch is inside. You have Paris leaning out over the plate and that almost hit him. Well, that’ll make it one ball and one strike. Ivaldi in 55 and two/3 innings just 37 hits allowed. More impressively, only five walks issued in those 55 and two/3s against 60 strikeouts. Here’s a swing and a foul high off the screen behind the plate and it’s now a ball and two strikes. Ardus in the ball game yesterday 0 for four though a couple of hard outs. He had homerred in each of the previous two games prior to starting this series. hitting 293 over the last 23 games. The one two misses low and outside. He’ll make it two balls and two strikes in those last four starts for Raldi in which he’s posted that 72 erra. He has one has won three and picked up a no decision. This offering outside and low for a full count here to Paradis. The one no decision was a game that the Rangers lost. Although Evaldi against the A’s in that performance here allowed just one run in six innings. Two out, nobody on top half of the first. We’ll count here to Paris. And here’s the pitch. And that’s outside in low ball four. So he doesn’t chase the curve. And a rare walk issued here by Nathan Ivaldi. Ivaldi with no more than one walk allowed uh in eight of his nine starts. He had one start back on April the 7th in Chicago against the Cubs when he walked two batters. So Paradus on board here for Christian Walker. Walker batting 203. Swings and fouls one back for strike one. Well, in the off season, the Astros went out and and got Paradis and Walker. And one of the reasons they wanted to get these guys, they targeted guys who see a lot of pitches. Here’s the 01. This pitch is outside. Last year, the Astros were dead last in baseball. A team that averaged seeing just 3.66 pitches per game. and or or rather per uh per late appearance I should say the 1-1 that’s way outside two balls one strike count and in Isach Paradus and Christian Walker last year Paradus led the major league in pitches seen per plate appearance Walker was 11th best in the major leagues last year saw 4.45 four five pitches per plate apparently. Currently 15th in the big leagues this year at 4.3. This pitch is outside the count three and one. And so in getting guys like this and putting them back to back in the batting order. Well, it’s uh a couple of players that will make the opposing pitcher work. And that’s what they’re doing here against Walker up in the count at three and one. And the pitch, a swing and a miss. Fast ball near the top of the zone. That was most likely strike two had he not swung. So a full count now to Walker who Walker is not putting up the numbers this year with Houston like he’s done the last three seasons with Arizona. It comes into play tonight. 0 for his last 16. 3-2 on the way. A swing and a ball driven into right field. A base nullies picks it up stopping at second is Paris. So both Paradus and Walker get to a full count and both reach. Paredus on the walk. Walker with the single. Two on, two out for Victor Keratini. This is a nice job by Walker. Got a fast ball over the outer part of the plate and shot it through the right side. A backside hit. And oh, that’s one way to help get yourself out of a slump. Not really worrying about hitting it over anybody, just hitting it through an open spot. So here’s Keratini who had a good game yesterday. Keratini is the designated hitter. Was two for three with a walk. One of those hits a double. Switch hitter stands in on the left side and takes this pitch on the inside part of the plate for strike one. Keratini raising his average for the season up to 262. Two homers and four runs batted in. Keratini swinging a good bat right now. Seven for his last 19. He’s got Paradus at second, Walker at first. Two men out. We’re just underway here in Arlington. This next pitch is chopped toward first. That is a fair ball fielded by Burger just a couple of steps from the bag. He’ll touch up to retired Keratini for the final out. No runs a hit. Astros lead two. And after a half inning of play, Houston nothing and Texas coming up on the Rangers radio network as the original. take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager said the following. I really don’t know what to say. I’m just uh so happy I gave something. These people cheer. We all did. I mean, it was a great game. Both teams played incredible. It was a great game. The Rangers coming to bat here in the bottom of the first against the right-hander Lance McCullers. It will be Smith, Langford, and Peterson to bat here in the home half of the first. Lance McCullers making a uh rebound, pitching in the big leagues this year for the first time since 2022. McCull’s problems with his pitching arm and in June of 2023. Had surgery to repair the flexor tendon in his right arm. Also had some bone spurs taken care of. First offering here to Josh Smith was on the inside corner for strike one. And then while attempting to come back last year, he suffered a setback. And so he didn’t pitch at all in the big league in 2023 or 2024. And we have time called here as plate umpire Edwin Jimenez will walk out to the mound along with the catcher Vic Keratini to have a chat with Lance McCullers. Somebody having a problem with one of their pitchcom devices. But color says I think we’re going to be okay. And colors walks back to the hill here. Edwin Jimenez on the balls and strikes tonight. Nick Lintz is the umpire at first. Nick Marley at second and Mark Ripper the crew chief is at third. McCuller steps back, kicks and deals the 01 and misses with that back door slider. And we’ll count a ball and a strike here to Josh Smith who’s hitting .306. Four homers and 10 runs batted in. Josh’s 306 batting average, ninth best in the American League. The 1-1 chopped to second. Altuve backs up to his right, picks it up and fires over to first in time to retire Smith. One gone here in the last half of the first. Wyatt Langford coming up. McCullers just four innings after two starts. And a big problem for him has been finding the strike zone. In his most recent outing against the Reds, he walked three in just a third of an inning. didn’t even make it out of the first as he misses here with his first pitch to Wyatt Langford. Gave up seven earned runs on three hits and three walls. This pitch bends in for a strike over the inner half. So, one and one to count to Wyatt Langford when McCull’s right before all the problems with his pitching arm. Uh he has been an extreme ground ball pitcher. the 1-1 pitch called the strike. Bottom of the zone, one and two the count here to Wyatt. Wyatt batting 248 with a team best eight home runs and 18 runs batted in. So McCull’s here in 2025 trying to regain the form that he had showed as this pitch comes in low and the count now at two balls and two strikes. Prior to all of these uh issues, McCullers was an all-star with Houston back in 2017. And in 2021, when he won 13 games, he got some Sai Young vote. Here’s a swing and a foul. And the count holds it two and two here to Wyatt Langford. Wyatt 0 for three in the ball game yesterday, which snapped a four-game hitting streak. McCull a deep breath. A second deep breath now back into the wind in the 2-2 and that pitch low and outside. He misses with the slider. Full count here to Wyatt Langford but Jock Peterson on deck. Rangers are in their city connects on this Friday night with cream tops with orange numerals. This pitch is hit high and deep out into left center. Meyers going back to his right. Onto the track he goes. And midway on the track, he calmly makes the catch in front of the Houston bullpen to get Langford for the second out. Yeah, that slider from a colors had just enough horizontal movement to go from what maybe it was the barrel of Langford’s bat to a portion of the bat that’s like part barrel, part didn’t totally miss the barrel. He hit it well, but uh just able to get enough movement to keep that pitch from going out of the yard. So two out, nobody on for Jock Peterson. Jock the DH batting 127 and he gets out of the way of a breaking ball that comes inside for ball one. Two games remaining in this series. We play tomorrow night at 605 and Sunday is a 1205 start. Remember that this pitch outside 2 and 0 the count here to Peterson. So, if you’re thinking about joining us tomorrow or Sunday, go to rangers.com, pick up your tickets to see the uh the back half of this silver boot series. This pitch is outside, so Peterson ahead of the count here at 3 and0. Jock’s been walking a lot of late, eight walks over his last 10 ball games. The batting average stays low, but the on base percentage now starting to climb. This pitch has popped up high into the air. That one headed toward the roof. Not a play. Three and one now. The count to Peterson. Now tomorrow terms of uh tickets available. Standing room only tickets. They all that’s left for Sunday. Just under 4500 tickets remain for the series finale. Here’s the 3-1. And that’s ripped foul over by the camera well near side of the Rangers dugout. So McCullers battles back here after being down three and 0 to a full count on Peterson. He hasn’t even thrown a single pitch in the strike zone. Peterson crowds the plate. Slightly open stance from the left side. Waiting here on the 3-2 from McCull. The right-hander throws and this pitch is down and in. Did he go an appeal and Mark Ripper his third says no swing. So Peterson draws the walk again. The walk’s climbing now. Nine walks for Peterson over his last 11 games. And that brings up Adolei Garcia. Peterson’s on base percentage coming into play today at 244. still way below league average, but a separation in his batting average and his on base percentage of almost 120 points. So, here’s Adole takes a pitch high for ball one. Adole definitely had a a good ball game last night, mostly defensively, but he had one of the Rangers three hits with a leadoff double in the fifth and then some sensational plays in right field. This pitch is in the dirt. A good stop by Keratini. Two and0 the count here to Adoleis. Adoleis now batting 231 hits in three straight and four of the last five. And of course his numbers against the Astros both regular season and postseason higher than his overall number as he takes this pitch on the outside corner for a strike. Two-1 the count. 61 regular season games against Houston and Adolei’s batting 270 against the Astros with 13 home runs, 42 runs batted in and an OPS near 800. The 2-1 swinging a foul that deflects off of Keratini to make it two balls and two strikes. Rangers baseball brought to you by Bob’s State and Chop House as we play here in the home half of the first. Nothing. Nothing. Peterson at first with two men out. Two and two the count here to Adoleis Garcia. Garcia three for eight in his career against McCullers. One of those three hits a home run. He’s also drawn a walk. All right, time here. The pitch clock reset. Two balls, two strikes the count as McCuller straightens to the set. And now the pitch. And that’s popped up over near first. Walker calling for it into foul ground and between the bag and the first base coaches box. He puts it away to get Garcia for the final out in the inning. So no runs, no hits. Rangers leave a man. And at the end of one, Astros nothing, Rangers nothing on the Rangers Radio Network. Hello everyone. This is Elvis Andrews, twotime Major League Baseball Allstar in 2025 Texas. Great moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921. Smith courts went into right down the line. It may go. Go crazy, folks. Go crazy. I mean, it was a great game. Both teams played incredible. It was a great game. That’s Mike Piaza after he hit an eighth inning go-ahead home run in the first New York Mets home game after 911. Here moments like this and more on the when they had a really good series against the East Houston Astros. All right, here we go to the second inning. Yiner Diaz to get it started and for the call it’s time for Jared Sandler. Thanks Matt. Yeah, that series didn’t feature a sevengame winning streak for the Rangers, but it did go to seven games. And Adoleis Garcia signed the papers and took ownership of the Astros. If I recall the first pitch to Diaz is a cutter that misses outside ball one. This is a very rightyheavy Astros lineup. Vic Keratini, who is retired to end the top of the first, the only guy in the starting lineup who’s going to hit from the left side. 10 strike over the outside corner. Another cutter. Count one and one. And I say a guy who’s going to hit from the left side as opposed to a left-handed hitter because he’s not a left-handed hitter. He’s a switch hitter. Nobody on. And the one-1 pitch. Check. Swing. Slider. That’s the pitch that Avaldi throws the least often among his five offerings. How rare is a slider from Avaldi? He’s throwing it about 1% of the time this year. 2-1 swing and a miss. Splitter below the zone and the count’s two and two. Yeah, you know, I feel like teams around the uh league are contorting their rotations just a bit to make sure they don’t start a lefty against Houston because the Astros have only faced five lefty starters all year. Two two swing and a foul. Curve ball. was going to be a ball inside, but Diaz, who’s a free swinger, offered at it, was able to foul it off and stay alive. And they’re not going to face a lefty in this series with Tyler Mi going tomorrow and Jack Lighter on Sunday. Rangers with one lefty starter. That’s Patrick Corbett. Two and two. No score leading off the second. The pitch misses high and the count’s fold. Diaz has only walked four times this year. A walk rate of 2.7%. The league average is about 9%. 3-2 swinging a bouncer. Third base side and foul. Second inning brought to you by Medical City Healthcare, the destination of choice for healthcare excellence. One of the unique elements of what Nathan Avaldi brings. His ability to mix pitches. See what he comes back with here. The 3-2 to Diaz. Swing and a miss. He went to the cutter. Might have been a strike. Might not have been, but took it out of the umpire’s hands when Diaz offered at it. Avaldi with his second strike out of the ball game. One away in the top of the second for Jake Meyers. So, two strikeouts so far for Nathan. One on a curve, one on a cutter. That was an eight pitch battle. Here’s Myers, right-handed batter. First pitch, front door slider for a strike. All right. Well, you never know what you’re going to get with a Valdi. And so far tonight that you never know what you’re going to get is the fact that he’s already thrown two sliders, which I know that’s not a lot, but curious what he ends up with. The 01 fouled away. They count nothing in two. And the player who got to 0 and2 more often than anyone else in Major League Baseball last year is down 0 and2. Two batters into the top of the second. And that’s Jake Meyers. And Meyers has been woeful with two strikes this season. And he wasn’t very good with two strikes last year. He recently got his first two strike hit of the season. And that’s tough to do in midmay for a guy who’s playing close to every day. The O2 that’s low. It counts to Meyers. One ball and two strikes. Gets the signs from his catcher. behind the wind up and the pitch outside count two and two so far this season with two strikes. Jake Myers is hitting under 100 to two. That misses the count three and two. But he’s worked the count from 0 and2 to three and two. And Valdi in jeopardy of walking a second batter in the game. He hasn’t walked two in a game for a while. 3-2 and outside ball four. So issues his second walk. This is a guy who entering tonight had the best strikeout to walk rate in Major League Baseball. He’s striking batters out, but his strikeout numbers aren’t going to jump off the page. It’s the fact that entering tonight, he had walked just five batters all year. The last time he walked two batters in a start was on April 7th, that freezing game against the Cubs at Wrigley. First pitch to Desenzo Weights is Avaldi throws over to first. Yeah, Nathan had walked a total of three batters over his previous six starts to the night. It’s pretty incredible. First pitch, Denzo grounds at third base side, but foul. Valdi has gone six or more innings in each of his last five starts. So, the low walk totals are not a result of not facing batters. He’s putting in the work. 01 at the belt. Slides home. The pitch swing and a miss. A slow curve. That one seemed to freeze in time as it bent below the zone and the count’s nothing at two. And that kind of has the slider look as well, but comes in at a slower speed. Meyers, who runs well, leads off of first. One out, no score. Top two. The O2 strike three called fast ball down the middle. Venzo obviously wasn’t looking for that pitch because that was almost right in the five spot, the middle middle portion of the strike zone. and Avaldi with the second strike out of the inning, third of the game. We’ve got two outs for the number nine hitter Cam Smith. Well, you have so many weapons, so many different ways to get guys out. That’s three strikeouts now on three different pitches for Avaldi. One on the cutter, one on the curve, and that one on the four seam. First pitch to Smith and Chopper to short. Josh Smith has it. Capey throws to first. Burger the stretch. Hammiss retired. And that ends the inning. Works around a one out walk. We’re scoreless going to the bottom of the second on the Rangers Radio Network. I’m Marcus Simeon and I know it’s cliche, but I’m a Californian who moved to Texas. When I joined the Rangers, I wanted to make tomorrow better for an incredible fan base. Speaking of basketball, good luck to the Dallas Wings. The Paige Becker’s era officially begins tonight. I believe they’re playing a home game to kick off their regular season. So, go Wings. No score. We go to the bottom of the second inning. It’s Marcus Simeon, Josh Young, and Evan Carter do up against Lance McCull’s Jr. who threw 21 pitches in the first inning, but came away without giving up a run. A big difference from his most recent start prior to tonight. First pitch Demarcus Simeon is a sinker for a strike. Last time the colors took the mound, he was charged with seven first inning runs. Only got one out against Cincinnati. He steps back into his left into the wind up the 01. Marcus a swing and a chopper foul towards the back end of the third base dugout and the count’s nothing and two. Well, McCullers is having to do what a lot of pitchers who go through a series of injuries and perhaps setbacks are forced to do and that’s learn how to pitch with different stuff. Oh, two. A hanging breaking ball popped up middle of the infield. Walker, the first baseman on the grass and he makes the catch. So Simeon’s retired. McCulla’s stuff still moves well. The slider has really good horizontal break, but not like it used to. It doesn’t profile is one of the best pitches in the league relative to the velocity and the movement. But another big difference is that V-word. The velocity is down for Lance McCull. He’s not nearly as powerful of a pitcher with the breaking stuff as he used to be. At least not yet. First pitch to Young as a change up for a strike when McCull’s pitched in 2022. His fast ball, his slider, couple miles an hour harder as though one sinker hit on the ground right side pass the dive of Altuve in a right center field. A base hit. Josh Young with the first hit for the Rangers. It comes with one out in the bottom of the second inning. Just went with that sinker at 0 and one. Shot it the other way. Brings up Evan Carter. Hey, for over 125 years, Globe Life has helped protect families when they need it most. Globe Life, make tomorrow better. Open stands for the left-handed swinger. And the first pitch, swing and a miss on a change up below the zone. Count nothing and one to Carter. Short stop. Pñena shaded heavily towards the middle with the third baseman. Paredus off the line and just outside the cut. 01. Change up low. Carter doesn’t offer at it and the count’s one and one. McCullers is throwing his change up more than any other pitch other than his sinker. That’s also a big change. In 2022, his last somewhat healthy season, the change up was his fourth most used offer. 1-1 slider for a strike in the count one and two. Now, this is just his third appearance. Things can change dramatically a few weeks from now in terms of looking at his pitch usage. Might be a fool’s Aaron to put too much stock into it right now. One two swinging a ball turned and fouled down the right field line hooking to the sweet level and the remains one and two. Carter stays alive. That one was moving and uh the folks down the right field line in the lower suits don’t usually see foul balls. So I hope they were paying attention. Yeah, if this was cricket, he’d have been in good shape. And on his back swing, he actually hit Vic Keratini’s catcher’s mask. Keratini appears to be okay. One and two to Carter. Young leads. One out, no score. Pitch is string a grounder back to the mound. McCullers has it. He goes to second for one, but he gets by Pñena into center field. Young keeps going and heads to third. Carter was busting it up the line, so he actually sprinted through the bag. and stays at first. Men of the corners. I want to look at a replay. I don’t know if Pñena lost it or what. That was not a bad throw. No, I thought it was a good throw. Does he have a hole in his glove? I guess maybe McCull’s threw a sinker to Pñena. That’s the only thing I can think of as to why he didn’t catch it. But I mean I maybe Pñena just took his eyes off it or lost it in a light or something cuz that was a good throw by McCull. It looked like he closed his glove a little too quickly and there was no place for the ball to go but center field. McCullers looked at Pena afterwards, patted his chest and said, “That’s my bat.” I I don’t know. I I think that’s I think that’s PA’s bat. If I’m charging an error there, I would charge it to Pñena. Here’s Jake Burgerer first pitch just swinging a foul bat. And I believe that’s who got charged with the error. So credit McCullers with an assist even though an out was not recorded. But it’s Pena’s error that allows for Young to be safe and at third. All right. Well, we’ll tally that in the assist column. We’ll see if McCullers can end tonight with a triple double. Then at the corners, one out. The 01. Burger takes. Carter dashes up to second and gets there without a throw. Burger took a sinker right down the middle though. So the counts nothing and two to Jake. Runners at second and third for the Rangers and one out in the infield moving in for the Astros with the exception of the third baseman Pedis who’s kind of midway. Young at third, Carter at second. Color set O2 outside. He figured he was going to try and get Burgerer to chase. Burger’s a free swinger, but he wisely laid off. He’s been hitting well since coming back from Triple A. Had the big home run yesterday. One, two, check swing. Lays off the slider again. That pitch started over the outside corner but broke wide at the zone and Burger works the count from 0 and2 to two and two. And the pitch swing a ball hit in the air to short center field. The second baseman Altuve going back onto the outfield turf. He makes the catch maybe 10 yardds beyond the dirt. So Burgerer pops out and there are two outs for Jonah Hine. So, the Rangers prime position, but at risk of squandering a couple of men in scoring position unless they get some two out action from their ninth place hitting catcher. I’m a switch hitter batting from the left side. Slightly open stance that resting on his shoulder. Cellers comes home. The first pitch him takes a slider load. They’re scoreless in the bottom of the second inning. Second of 13 meetings between these two teams this year. And the Astros after this four-game series won’t return to Arlington until September. The 10 change up low and away. They count two and Oah. Young at third. Carter at second. Infield back the 200 strike over the inside corner at the knees. McCullers went back to the change up. Just barely found the zone. That was a really welllocated two- pitch and the count’s now two and one. Colors in long blue sleeves, right glove just below the letters. 2-1. Him swings, hooks one down the right field line. It’s a base hit. Played on a hop by Smith. Young scores. Carter rounds third. He comes home and scores. It’s a two-run, two out base knock for Jonah. And the Rangers strike first here in the bottom of the second. Jonah jumping all over. A 2-1 slider that time from McCull and hitting it hard. Jonah has been in a little patch here for a few games where he’s not been making great contact, but overall Jonah has had terrific at bats all season long. And again, he gets a hold of this slider and crunches it. There’s Josh Smith. First pitch, a swing and a miss on an elevated fast. Jonah laid off the first two pitches of his at bat, put himself in a favorable count and was able to deliver. Smith grounded out to Altuve to begin the bottom of the first. So he’s seeing the colors for a second time. I’m held on by Walker, but as you know, not really a threat to run the 01 inside. Rangers got just one run yesterday, but it was enough. They beat the Astros one- nothing. They lead two nothing tonight. Pitch to Smith. A swing and a foul. A change up sprayed to the left. And the count, one ball and two strikes. The first run for the Rangers brought to you by K Cabota. And the insurance run brought to you by Globe Life. For over 125 years, Globe Life has helped protect families when they need it most. Globe Life. Make tomorrow better. One, two. Breaking ball swatted into right field. A base hit. It rolls towards Cam Smith. He turns around second but stays put. Smith has a good arm in right field. And Heim with two outs didn’t feel the need to test it. So the Rangers have two on, two outs. Wyatt Langford, who drove a ball around 400 ft to left center field his first time up, tracked down by Meyers, will get to face McCullers for a second time, but not before a meeting on the mound commences. And Jared, you talked in the top half of this inning about Jake Meyers having real difficulty with two strikes in the count. How about Josh Smith this year? there. He gets a hold of a one-two curve ball to pull it out into right field. Coming into play today, Smith’s batting average with two strikes in the count at 281. That’s about 110 points higher than the big league average, which is around 170. So again, 281’s a good batting average, but with two strikes in the count, that’s elite. Hey, you know, we didn’t revisit our our four goals the other day, but your goal was two strike hitting. Yeah. And the Rangers cleared that 170 mark over that sevename stretch. They did. So, here’s Langford. McCull set, check second. Heim leads first pitch and the cutter misses outside. Another guy who has been consistently good with two strikes in the count this year is the guy who drove in the two runs, Jonah. Even though in this inning he did so on a 2-1 pitch, but he also is way above league average with two strikes. The one Langford takes and it’s an elevated sinker at the top of the zone for a strike, but I guess it wasn’t two strikes, but he did it with two outs, which that’s a separate category, but an important one nonetheless. Two on for the Rangers. They lead two nothing in the bottom of the second. One and one to Langford. Colors pitch. It’s a sinker off the plate. Count two and one. Now I’m curious if Langford sees a slider from McCullers. It was the slider that he almost hit out of the yard. Even though it was an out, I can’t imagine McCullers felt great about the contact off of Langford’s back. Might not throw him one in the zone. Maybe he’ll try and get him to chase the 2-1. So going to chopper to the left side. Pedes charges, fields a short hop, looks to second. No play to first instead just in time to get Langford with a Walker stretch. That was risky by Pedes to look at second knowing the speed of Langford, but I think he got it over there just in time. The Rangers are considering a review, but they are not going to request one as Walker did receive it while Langford’s foot was hovering above the bag. And that ends the inning. But two runs for the Rangers on three hits. Two men left. We go to the third. It’s two nothing Texas on the Rangers Radio Network. Here’s to the roof shakers. You fans who give your all. But what did Jake Berger say? New Pope, new me. Well, maybe new Pope, new Rangers. They beat the Astros in Arlington yesterday, one- nothing and leading two nothing. As we go to the third inning, Nathan Avaldi back to work getting set to face the top of the Astros order. Jeremy Pñena, Jose Altuve, and Isach Pedesi. 39 pitches through two innings into the wind up in the first pitch to Pñena. A strike over the outside corner and it counts nothing at one. Pñena struck out swinging to begin the game on an Avaldi curveball. Light colored glove behind Avaldi’s cap as he winds and deals. They’ll want a swing and a miss. There’s a curveball and the count nothing and two city connect uniforms for the Rangers tonight, but they have the armed forces weekend themed caps and socks. Melting pot 02 that’s slowing away misses with a splitter and the count to Pñena now one ball in two strikes PA’s been one of the bright spots for an Astros team that has struggled offensively hitting over 300 with an OPS in the mid 800s one two swing a ground ball towards the middle it’s gloved by Smith cutting in front of Simeon throws on a run to first and gets Pñena for the first down. That’s a really nice play by the shortstop. Smith moving to his left on what would have been a tougher play for Simeon who is attempting to field it on a backhand moving away from first. Yeah, how about that jump throw? He’s twisting his body in the air as he releases that throw. So, here’s Jose Altuve still getting booed. Although, you know, as they were reading the Astros starting lineups last night and tonight again, not as many guys who get booed these days. Alex Bregman’s no longer here. Kyle Tucker first pitched Al Tuve is a breaking ball high. Yordon Alvarez is here, but he’s on the IIL. Although Bregman did hear it here when he came to town with Boston. Absolutely. Uh Martine Maldonado is no longer an Astro. The 10 fast ball pumped in there for a strike at 95 to count one and one. And at the beginning last night when he got introduced, it it it wasn’t as visceral as it’s been. It’s almost as if the crowd had to re-educate itself. Oh yeah, it’s Altuve. Yeah. Okay. The one-1 check swing, but it’s in there for a strike. A cutter over the outer corner and the count’s one and two. Well, maybe it’s because they first saw left field and they’re like, “Well, who’s this guy?” Yeah, exactly. Tu played left field last night. He’s back at second tonight. This is his eighth start this season at second base. He’s a left fielder now. The one-two swinging a bouncer to third. Rodon Alvare as we mentioned he’s hurt and there’s some thought that maybe the Rangers would see him this weekend but perhaps that won’t be the case although there was thought the Rangers would not face Valdez but it’s possible that TBD on Sunday is Framber Valdez for the Astros the first pitch to Jo Peterson from Lance McCullers is a curveball that drops below the zone ball One wind up 1. Breaking ball strike over the outside corner. The count one and one. Peterson turns back to Edwin Jimenez and just confirms location. Peterson is a mustached man these days. 1-1 inside. Although you’d have to really look hard because his blonde hair and thus his blonde mustache doesn’t really stand out. He’s wearing the neon green fixtures along with his jersey. The 2-1 check swing, but he went around on a slider low and in the count two and two. I’d love to see you in a mustache. No, you wouldn’t. I think I would. No, Siri. When was the last Did you have you ever Never. You’ve never been a mustache guy. I think maybe the longest I’ve gone without shaving is four or five days. Peterson walked on six pitches in the first. I remember many years ago my dad sporting a mustache for the first time in a long time. And I’m It’s not not all that good looking there, Dad. I consider it every day. The 2-2 swinging a ball fouled away. Took nine pitches to do it. And that brings up Adullius Garcia. And we’ve talked about this before, but Sometimes a lengthy at bat in the middle of an inning, even if it ends in a favorable result for the pitcher, could end up having a positive waterfall effect on the rest of the inning for the hitting team. First pitch swinging a hard hit ground ball to third, but right to Pedes. Gobbles it up, throws a cross, and Garcia’s retired on one pitch. Sometimes it doesn’t though. And that’s okay, too. Yeah, I would I would advise you don’t go chasing waterfall. Favorite member of TLC? Were you more of a T-bos or a left eye? Chile for sure. That’s the stock answer. Yeah. You know Chile’s real name? Uh, no, I do not. Rosand Thomas. Very good. Wipedia tells me that. First pitch to Marcus Simeon. There’s a strike in the bottom of the zone. Marcus popped out to the second baseman Altuve in the second inning. Rangers two Astros nothing. We’re in the bottom of the third. The 01 breaking ball inside in the count one and one. You know earlier today I was actually thinking this. I was actually thinking about how our bullpin this year and how good it’s been is comparable to the group TLC. The 1-1 inside of that hit Simeon or did it? Okay. I thought for a second Edwin Jimenez was saying it hit his bat because it did sound like it made a cracking noise. It hit his helmet. Yeah, maybe that was it. Marcus is okay. That was a slow breaking ball from McCullers, but Simeon, who rarely gets hit by pitches, finds his way on board via the errant offering from McCull. No, it hit his elbow guard. That’s what it All right. So, you’re probably wondering how I could compare our bullpen to TLC. I’m just impressed that they crossed your mind. Yeah. Well, for me, TLC, like every song they ever did, is a good song. And so, I think that they have with all of their compilations, a very high floor. Uh, first pitch, Simeon goes, the pitch is a ball and Simeon dives in safely. The slider missed outside. And Keratini, who has only thrown out one wouldbe base steeler this year and now 21 chances, wasn’t really close to getting Simeon there. And I think the same can be said for our bullpin. Our bullpin a very high floor. So many different guys have contributed to the success of this club this year. It’s an impressive comparison. The 10 pitch in there for strength. It’s interesting you thought of TLC. There are a lot of groups I would have thought of as hit makers. Maybe not TLC. For me, for me TLC, like if they come on the radio, I don’t change the channel. I listen to every song because they’re all pretty good. 1-1 that gets by Keratini to the back stop. So Simeon jogs to third and the Rangers with two outs with a man 90 ft away and the count’s two and one to Josh Young. You know, I don’t know as though there’s any TLC song that I think is a great song, you know, near the top of my want to listen to type songs. But they’re one of the few groups that if they come on the radio, I never change the channel. Coming up in the fourth inning, Matt’s going to give us his top five from TLC. 2-1. Young swings and fouls it back. A lot of debate whether unprett no scrubs or waterfalls will be absent from the top five. I’ve heard one of those five or one of those three didn’t make it. You’ll have to tune in the fourth inning to find out the can in our ear. Of all their songs, there are no scrubs. The two McCullers to Young breaking ball twisted foul out of play to the right. McCullers with a 21 pitch first, a 27 pitch second, and Zvada throws 18th pitch here in the third, which would be a 66th overall. set of the belt to two and that’s low. He buries a change up. Young lays off and the count’s full. Young hoping to hit one a ways where people say baby baby. Look at that ball go. 3-2 swinging a slow grounder to short. Pñena waits on it. He whips a throw over to first and that ends the inning. So Young is retired on seven pitches and so are the Rangers. Three in the books. Rangers two Astros nothing on the Rangers radio network. Take a guessing which baseball player or manager said the following. I really don’t know what to say. I’m just uh so happy I gave something. These people cheer. We all did. Ken Mendes, our engineer here in house. Clary Flores and Dylan Moore are at master control. Rangers two runs coming on a two out RBI, a two-run single by Jonahheim with two men out in the bottom of the second. You know what I mean? All right. Uh here’s Walker, Christian Walker. He singled his first time up, snapping an 0 for6 skid. And he looks at this fast ball from Evaldi that misses away for ball one. Keratini on deck and then Diaz do up after him. Two runs on three hits for the Rangers. No runs a hit, one error for Houston. And now the one pitch. Swinging a miss on a curveball. Walker way out front. And the count now one ball and one strike. You know, it’s it’s not just the mix of pitches for Evaldi, but the pitch sequencing and knowing when to throw a pitch like the curve. The 1-1. That’s hit sharply to the left of Simeon who slides to the ball, has it, pops up and throws him out. Nice play by Marcus. Simeon going hard to his left. He was stationed to more up the middle there for Walker. But a fine play by Simeon to get the first out here in the fourth. Marcus has not had a good year offensively yet, but he still provides value to this team because of what he can do on the bases, but more so what he does playing a premium defensive position on a nightly basis. He will play Keratini to pull here with Smith. The shorts stop stationed up the middle as far up the middle as a short stop can be these days. And this first offering comes just a little bit inside to Keratini for ball one. Keratini grounded out to first, his first time up. We mentioned earlier that teams are just avoiding left-handed starters uh when they face uh this Houston ball club. This pitch misses and the count now at two balls and no strikes. The Astros have faced just five left-handed starters all season long. They don’t have much in the way of numbers against lefties. Giner Diaz the most at bats against the lefty this year for Houston at 26. Here’s a swing and a miss. Count Keratini now with two balls and one strike. And I wonder how much of that is just random because it’s not like the Astros hit lefties particularly well. They’re kind of middle of the league in some categories, bottom third of the league and others. 2-1. That’s hit past Young who was playing closer to second than third and out into left field. Scooped up by Langford. So Keratini punches a single the other way as his third hit of the series. He’s on board with one out here for Yiner Diaz. Now the best metric for the Astros against lefties among some of the more basic ones would be their slugging percentage. It ranks or at least coming into tonight ranked 10th in baseball. But that figure checks in at 389 which in and of itself is not an incredibly impressive number, right? So, it’s not like something that would scare you. Here’s Diaz with a swing and a miss. He’s way out in front on the Evaldi curve. Strike one. You know, if I’m trying to outrun a group of guys and, you know, one of them steps forward and says, “I’m the fastest. You got to worry about me.” But he’s, you know, running like a 5740, it doesn’t make him any more fast. He’s just a part of a group of friends who are incredibly slow. Yeah. Comparatively speaking. Here’s a ball lifted high into the air deep center field. Going back is Carter. He’s onto the track and he makes the catch. Just a step or two in front of the Rangers bullpin. Well struck ball there by Diaz, but he’s the second out here in the top half of the fourth. Brings up Jake Meyers. All right. So, when are we getting your top five TS songs? Yeah, I’m ready. Ready. You’re going to go five to one or one to five. I’d love five to one. The Carson Daily TRL style countdown. Okay. Number five TLC song. Red Light Special. I had that at number six. Good call though. Okay. Yeah. Number four, Creep. Yeah, that didn’t register for me. Okay, number three. You did it a little bit ago. Baby, baby, baby. Yep. Number three. That was five for me. Okay, number two is Waterfalls. Number one for me. Okay, there’s Meyers who walked his first time up. That pitch on the inside corner for strike one. And number one uh for me far and away, no scrub. Yeah. Yeah, I had no scrubs. Number two, I had unp prettyity. Tied for 17th. Unpity’s unprett’s good. Yeah, that was tough. That was a tough tide for 17th selection. Okay, this pitch just a little bit outside and we count now one ball and one strike. Hat to the back also made my top 10. Big surprise. Joe Lonardi didn’t have that one. No. In in the top 64, but found its way in. Just consistently good music that they uh turned out back in the day. Here’s a pitch in the dirt and it gets away from Jonah and so scooting up to second base is Keratini on the wild pitch. Count to Meyers goes to two and one. You know, a big sleeper for me that cracked my top five was I’m good at being bad. And I think it was somewhat Freudian because I’ve heard that said to me about me my whole life. And so I just figure, well, I guess that must be a good thing. Being bad is it can be a good thing, but I’m just not good at things. And so everyone says that I’m good at being bad. Who are those people? We need to We need to shake them up a little bit. I don’t know. I’m looking at two of them. Ken and and you. Here’s the 2-1. And that pitch is outside. Three in one count. I will say growing up there was a show on I think Nickelodeon called All That. And I didn’t watch it very much, but I did like the theme song to it. And that was from TLC. As this pitch hits the outside corner for a strike, Meyers thought it might be a ball. The count instead is full. Folks around my age probably remember all that. I think I would watch it just for the theme song portion and then change back to like ESPN or something. Really full count here to Meyers. Two men out. Keratini at second. And here’s a chopper past the mound. Charged by Smith in front of second. He’s got it. Launches a dart over to first. Burger’s got it. And Meyers is the final out here in the top half of the fourth. Stole a base and scored one of those two runs back in the second inning. And the first offering here touches the outside edge for strike one. Burger and him to follow here for the Rangers. Now, we had a grand total of eight hits in the ball game between the two clubs yesterday. Just five hits on the board tonight. There’s a pretty knuckle curve from McCullers that bends in for a strike and the count nothing and two. Now, the right-hander leans back, lifts the leg, and comes home with the O2. Swinging a miss here on a pitch that uh gets away from Keratini. What do we have here? Oh, I guess Carter just ended up standing in the dirt circle and Keratini tagged him out. Did he think he had fouled it off? I don’t Yeah, I don’t know what he thought. But if he didn’t foul it off, then he should have torn for Yeah, I know. He would turned and immediately argued that he fouled it off. And oh, had he not been fooled by that, maybe he would have gotten there. Here’s Jake Burgerer. who takes a pitch inside for ball one. Burger popped up into shallow center. A ball caught by Altuve back in the second inning. Here comes the 10 and that ball is looped out into left center field and it will find some turf. Over to pick it up is Myers Burger. A huge turn around first, but he’ll hold up there. Myers gets the ball back in as quickly as possible. So Burgerer has a one out single. the fourth hit for Texas here tonight. And that brings up Jonah Hine. That was a pitch in the zone. Change up at the top of the zone. Actually, not where you typically see a change up. And Jake didn’t get good wood on it, but was able to find some open real estate. So Jonah up here, a two-run single for him into the right field corner. His first time up, a swing and a foul that comes straight back. Strike one. You were talking earlier about how Jonah like Josh Smith has been very good with two strikes in the count this year. And just to give you a statistic there, Jonah hitting 222 when there are two strikes in the count. Again, the league average is around 170. There’s a swing and a miss. Fast ball near the top of the zone and Jonah finds himself behind in the count here at nothing and two. Burger at first, one out. Rangers leading two to nothing as we play in the bottom half of the fourth. Infield and outfield playing Jonah to pull as he swings here from the left side. Open stance back in the box. McCullers with the two strike pitch and he misses. That hit in the dirt. Keratini smothered it. So Burger stays put and the count had a ball in two strikes. No, the Stars fell yesterday to Winnipeg four to nothing, but still lead the series three games to two. Yeah, and Jamie Ben delivered a TKO of Mark Shley late in the third. Very good. Thankfully, no suspension, just a fine. One and two, the count. This pitch way inside and Katini stops it. The ball goes out into fair territory, but again, Burger stays put on the count. Two balls and two strikes. I was just thinking if the if the Stars needed any help that the guys involved right now here in the bottom of the fourth inning could perhaps help a little bit. Jake Burgerer in first and Jonah at the dish. Couple of wingers back in the day. Burger played hockey and so too did Jonah. I was talking with Jonah the other day, uh, growing up in the Buffalo area, how he played hockey up until high school, but he kind of felt like he had to make a choice and he picked the baseball route, made a good decision. Here’s a ground ball foul. First base side, the count holds at two balls and two strikes. You know who Jake Burgerer’s coach was in his later years in hockey? Yeah. Was it um guy for the Panthers? His dad. The guy for the Panthers. Oh, Matthew Kachchuck’s dad. Matthew Kachchuck’s dad. This pitch is high and outside. Full counter. No, I think Keith Kachchuck was still playing when Jake was in his early teenage years. Al McKinnis was his Oh, wow. Really? Okay. Outstanding defenseman with a really hard shot. Hall of Famer. The 3-2 pitch. That’s hit on the ground to second. Bobbled by Altoube. It’s behind him. He turns, picks it up. Throws to first. Heim is retired, but Burgerer is safe at second. Alt was thinking start the double play. May have taken his eye off the ball and didn’t field it cleanly. And I don’t know, Matt, if he would have gotten Burger at second. Burgerer was running on the pitch and you know, Burger runs well. Altuve not a particularly good second baseman. That ball kind of took a hop on him last second, but he was able to keep it within reach. Gather and throw to first. But I wonder had he fielded it cleanly if he would have been able to get Burger. I don’t know that he would have. Yep. So, two men out, Burger at second. Here’s Josh Smith. And Smith with a swing and a miss on a pitch that was down and in for strike one. This is minor, right? But Burgerer being in motion prevents a double play, extends an inning, and now he’s in scoring position with two outs. Might amount to nothing. But if Josh Smith gets a hit, well, just the simple idea of aggression there helped make it possible. The 01 is lifted high into the air deep center field. Meyers going back on this. Myers onto the track and he makes the catch just before banging into the wall. Smith gave it a ride, but it’s a long final out here in the home fourth. No runs a hit, one left. We go to the fifth, but the Rangers still on top. Two nothing on the Rangers Radio Network. Turn up your radio Ranger fans. It’s time for the Golden Chick Race. Denzo hit seventh in the order yesterday. Went one for three with a walk. Now the right-handers 1 and that one a curve ball on the inside corner for a strike. So one and one the count here to Denzoi overhead with the wind and the 1-1. A swing and a miss. Splitter away and that’ll make it a ball and two strikes. Well, Evaldi once again mixing his pitches very well. He kicks and deals the one-two pitch and this is hit on the ground to third. Young waits on it, scoops it up, sets and throws. Denzo runs well, but Young gets it there just in the nick of time. So one away. The last three of the last four outs have come on the ground here for Ivaldi. Ivaldi balls put in play against him this year. About 50% of the balls put in play have been hit on the ground. So one gone. And that brings up Cam Smith just 22 years of age. one of the three players that the Astros got in the Kyle Tucker deal with the Cubs back in December. And Smith takes this pitch for a strike. He grounded out the short back in the second. One of the others was Isach Paredus. And the other guy, starting pitcher Hayden Wesneski, is one of the many Astros currently on the injured list. This pitch fouled off on the right side and the count at no balls and two strikes. Wesneski went on the IIL about a week ago with the elbow discomfort. Nothing to the count here to Smith was a first round pick of the Cubs just last year coming out of Florida State. And here he checks his swing, but that slider is in the zone. So Smith out on three pitches for Avaldi. He records his fifth strikeout. of the five strikeouts for Evaldi, they’ve come on four different pitches now as again he gets Smith there with the slider top of the order and Jeremy Pñena Pñena 0 for two with a strike out. He’s also bounced out to short. First offering to Pena and that one hits the outside edge for strike one. Well, in terms of mixing tonight for Evaldi, of his top four pitches, the one that he’s thrown the least is the curveball, and he’s thrown it 13 times. This pitch has popped up shallow right field. Adoleis comes in. He’s there and he’s got it. That’s a one, two, three, top of the fifth for Nathan Aaldi. Dubin, a guy who started the season on the injured list and was just activated not quite a week ago. He had been on the IIL with right shoulder inflammation. So for Duban, this is his third appearance since being activated on Sunday. Two and two/3s innings have worked for him in his two previous outings. Here’s a check swing and a foul off the bat of Wyatt Langford for strike one. Wyatt 0 for two. He is flyed out to the warning track in left center. Last time up he grounded out to third. Two, three, and four in the order due here for the Rangers. And this next pitch on the outside edge, a late strike called there by Edwin Jimenez and the counted no balls in two strikes. And coming into this series, uh last night’s plate umpire Mark Ripper and tonight’s played umpire Edwin Jimenez. There’s a swing and a foul tip caught by Keratini. Sweeper gets Langford. He strikes out on three pitches. One gone here in the last half of the fifth. Jock Peters in the batter. Um these two umpires when they’re behind the plate ranked first and third among all major league umpires who had been behind the dish this year in terms of correct call rate. Ripper came into this series first and Jimenez third best correct call rate in the game. And here’s curveball that dots the outside corner for strike one to Jock Peterson. Peterson walked in the first, struck out in the third. That was a nine pitch strikeout. Dubin steps back, hesitates, now kicks and fires. And this one gets tapped. Foul off the dirt circle over near Adoleis Garcia, the on deck man. And the count nothing and two here to Peterson. of Duban, 13th round pick of the Astros back in 2018 coming out of Georgetown College in Kentucky. He’s a native of Alageney, New York. Last year appeared in 31 games for the Astros. Pitched to a 417 ERA. Swinging a miss here on a curveball in the zone. One foot out of the box and now he’ll get back in. Astros play him to pull in the infield deep and to go the other way in the outfield. Duben kicks and deals and this one gets fouled back. The Dolies now six for his last 21. And of those six hits, three doubles and a home run. He awaits another 02 offering. And the right-hander fires and this one is popped up left side of the infield. Pñena the shortstop on the dirt and he’ll squeeze it with both hands to retire Adole Garcia Duben with a one 123 fifth to the sixth. We go two nothing Texas on the Rangers radio network. Two, three, and four do up for Houston. Altuve 0 for two tonight. Fly out in a groundown. Quality winds and the first pitch. Fast ball that misses just off the plate. Not a lot of hard contact out off of Avali tonight. 10 strike right down the middle. A splitter from Evo and the count one and one. Caleb Ort is warming in the Astros bullpen. John Duben a one two three 10 pitch inning in the bottom of the fifth. 1-1 inside. It bends Altuve away from the plate as he backpedals out of the dirt circle. Curve ball that Avaldi didn’t locate where he wanted and it counts two and one. Second baseman Simeon shaded towards the middle. Baldi extends the arms, brings him behind the cap and the two-1 pitch. Swing and a miss. A big cut on the cutter in the zone from Aaliy in the count. Two and two. Two nothing Rangers. Top of the six. The two- two pitch. Swing a ground ball left side. Scooped up by Young to his left on a short hobby. He throws across. And alub’s retired for the first out of the inning. That brings up Isach Pedes. It’s always fun to look at Valdi’s pitch usage tonight. He’s thrown his four seam fast more than any other pitch, but right along with it is the cutter. First pitch to Paris. Splitter down low. Counts one and0. Only once this year has Aaldi featured the same pitch most often in consecutive starts. He really mixes with the best of 10. Cutter outside. So for the third time in three plate appearances against Pedes, he gets to a three ball count. Wind up. And here it comes. And Pedes launches one in the air to left center field. Walker offers at it in the count one and one. standing on the mound, waits for Walker, who called time and stepped out. He’s back in there. One-1 pitch. Valdi goes to the cutter that catches the outside corner for a strike. And they count one and two. So he’s one strike away from getting his sixth strike out of the night. One pitch away from completing a one, two, three inning. He’s retired seven straight. Trying to make it eight. The one two outside. Two balls and two strikes. The pitch to Walker way outside. He yanked the fast ball and the count is full to the right-handed hitting first baseman out of South Carolina. Former college teammate of Jordan Montgomery. 3-2. Here it comes. Let’s see if you can figure out the following baseball slang term. Today’s phrase is oppo taco. Do you know what it means? taco. A home run hit to the opposite field with an oppo taco. His 13th and it’s a one-run game. Expand your vocabulary by listening to every game on the MLB app and MLB.com. Milner came on in the top of the six. Got thick keratini to fly out. Stays on and gets set to face Yiner Diaz. Jake Myers and Zack Venzo. He has 0 for two. Although last time up he gave one a ride to Deepson on the first pitch from Milner. This side armor misses outside with a sweeper. Ball one. There’s a fast ball for a strike over the middle of the plate and the count one and one. He has a guy who hits the ball hard but doesn’t walk at all. So on base not very good. OPS not as good as you’d think as he chops the one-1 pitch to short. Gloved by Smith to his right. A long throw to first in time and we’ve got one away in the top of the seventh. Our broadcast brought to you by our friends at the Rangers baseball organization. You can text Rangers to 76432 for Rangers news updates and exclusive ticket offers. What if I was like this broadcast brought to you by the Twins? First pitch to Myers is low. Just to be totally honest, I assumed we had a non-Rangers related read as I set that up. up. I looked at our sheet and we’ve done a pretty good job with those. We’ve knocked them all out. They’re all gone. 10. That’s low. I I thought I had a pretty poor effort in the second and third innings and knocking out reads, but you you picked up the slack. I I I I wondered there if we were doing some sort of cross promotion during rivalry week with the twins. Certainly wouldn’t be with the Astros. Not going to cooperate with them as Myers lines one to left field and Carter has, excuse me, Langford has to back up on it and play it on a hop. It’s one of those balls that maybe he could have put himself in position to dive and make a play, but no reason to risk it. You got a ground ball pitcher on the mound in Milner and Desenzo batting. Maybe you keep the double play intact. Myers with the base knock. He’s reached twice. Walk back in the second single here in the seventh. Senzo a righty awaits first pitch from Milner. Misses with a fast ball. Ball one. Working on the first base side of the rubber. Milner at the belt. Hicks jerks home the pitch. Sweeper for a strike. Bottom of the zone. Might not have been a strike, but he got the call from Jimenez. One-1 swing and that one is hammered to right field going back. Garcia near the track onto the track. Reaching up, he makes the catch just a few steps shy of the wall just to the right of the Rangers bullpen. Garcia puts it away and the ground ball pitcher Milner hasn’t really been given up. Balls on the ground. The ground out from Diaz, but Meyers with a line drive. Desenzo a deep fly ball. And to end the six inning, Keratini hit a deep fly ball. But outs are outs. And here’s Cam Smith. First pitch and that misses outside ball one. Adoleis continuing to demonstrate his range out in right field in this series. 10 sweeper downstairs. Count two and 0. Milner intercept to a pitch. A wave and a miss on a sinker. Might have been off the plate. Counts two and one. Sean Armstrong throwing in the Rangers bullpen. Milner about to throw his 16th pitch. Pitch count really not a factor for Milner. Not at this stage at least. It’ll be purely matchup based at this point. 2-1 check swing and Smith takes a change up below the zone. You wonder if Smith reaches if the Rangers would elect to have the righty Armstrong face Pñena who if Smith reached would come up as the go-ahead run. Two nothing Rangers top seven. the 3-1 swing and that one is hammered up the alley left center field. Carter races after it. Not going to get it. One hopping off the wall. He picks it up on the track. Myers rounds third. He comes home and scores. The relay throw cut off by Simeon. And the number nine hitter Cam Smith with an RBI double. So in the top of the seventh inning, the Astros score their first run of the series. And just like that, the tying run is in scoring position. Well, they got a hold of a 3-1 sinker that time and Smith’s actually been doing a pretty good job here of late. He was 0 for three in the ball game against the Royals on Tuesday. And that snap foot for him had been a 15 game on Bay Street. Well, Smith gave that one a charge and that’s going to end it for Hobie Milner tonight. He walks off the mound. Sean Armstrong jogging in from the bullpen. Pitching change in Arlington in the top of the seventh. Tying run in scoring position. Sean arm. Let’s see if we can figure out the following baseball slang term. Today’s phrase is oppo taco. Do you know what it means? Oppo taco. A home run hit to the opposite field. Austin with an aerrun game. Take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager sent a following. I really don’t know what to say. I’m just uh so happy I gave something. These people cheer. We all did. I mean, it was a great game. Both teams played incredible. It was a great game. That’s Mike Piaza after he hit an eighth inning go-ahead home run in the first New York Mets home game after 911. Here moments like this and more on the MLB app and MLB.com. Great moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921. Smith courts went in right down the line with go crazy folks. Go crazy. It’s a home run and the go Rangers. Top of the seventh, two outs. Cam Smith, who just had an RBI double at second. Armstrong, who’s shared some of the closing duties since Luke Jackson got struck by the line drive, pitching here in the seventh. And the first pitch he throws to Pñena, misses low and away, ball one. Armstrong working on the first base side of the rubber. He’s set at the belt. A high kick in the pitch. He delivers a cutter loan away. It gets away from high and he throws to third and Smith slides in safely. So now the tying run 90 ft away. Two and0 the count to Pñena without Tuveet on deck. In case you’re wondering which matchup might be better for Armstrong now that he’s down 2 and 0. small sample size, but Altuve is two for three in his career against Armstrong with a triple and a homer. Pñena is 0 for nothing. This is his first time facing 200 in there for a strike. Count two and one. Safe to say though that Pñena right now the hotter hitter than two. Yeah, no doubt. Now, you got to balance all those different things, right? What’s important to you in that moment with 2-1 inside a swing and a ball jam back foul to count two and two. Two runs on four hits for the Rangers. One run on four hits for the Astros. We’re in the top of the seventh. Smith at third. Armstrong trying to send the Rangers to the stretch of the lead. He’s at the belt and now he steps off. I think time might have been called first by Pñena and is 0 for three tonight. The 2-2 just outside Bell Thai fast ball. It was off the plate. Close enough to get a reaction from the fans. It was the right call but tough take from Pius. The count’s full. Payoff pitch coming. Armstrong’s delivery. Low ball four. So with first base open, he doesn’t give in to Pñena. I don’t know that he was necessarily trying to pitch around him, but he did have a little bit of room to play with. that now he’s going to face José Altuve, but not before Mike Maddox takes a trip to the mound just to make sure that Armstrong and Heim are in line with the game plan. Yeah, the one thing about Altuve, whose numbers aren’t where you would traditionally see them aluve for his last 12, but he’s doesn’t go on these little dips for very long. You always have that in the back of your mind that he can strike at any time. And he obviously has a history of striking in this ballpark. He does. Fans letting you know who’s batting with the booze serenating Altuve. The inning started with a Yiner Diaz ground out, but Jake Meyers’s single with one out started things for the Astros. Two batters later, Cam Smith doubled him home. Pñena walks men at the corners. Altuve the batter. Armstrong the pitcher. The first pitch from the righty outside ball one. He went to the sinker. Count one and0 to Aluve who three outs have come by way of ground balls twice and a fly ball once. The 10 outside Armstrong misses with the cutter. The count two and0 strong at the belt. Little bit of a kick, the pitch and the two fast balls. A strike over the outer half. This is Armstrong’s third appearance in the last four days. He got the save last night. Back at it again. 2-1 downstairs. Count three and one. There is action in the Rangers bullpen. And it appears that the big righty Chris Martin is throwing which is a good sign given that just a few nights ago he walked off the mound with elbow tightens. But Armstrong has to face Paris. Altuve is just his second hitter. He’s got to face the minimum three. And now Jonah going to go out to the mound. So, we’ve got some tension here at Globe Life Field. Another lowscoring affair. Time slowly walks back behind the plate. What is Armstrong going to do here? He’s down three and one. seems like he’s having a tough time commanding his pitches, nibbling around the perimeter of the zone. All right, he’s ready as he comes to the set with 3-1 now. Low ball four. So Armstrong has come on and walked backto back batteries that loads the bases for Pettis with nowhere to put him. and Pettis 0 for two. Well, one thing that he has done all three played appearances is see a three ball count against Oaldi. I say that to simply suggest if Armstrong’s not going to throw him strikes, Pettis is not going to give him any gifts. And time is called before Armstrong delivers his first pitch. This little rally reminding us that there are not an insignificant number of Astros fans here in the building tonight. I haven’t had a lot to cheer about this series until this inning. 2-1 first pitch. That’s low. Rangers on top. One-run lead. Bases are loaded and Armstrong’s walked the first two he’s faced. Martin presumably would be ready to come on if Paris reaches. But again, Armstrong with the three batter minimum has to face Paris. The 10 strike over the inner half. He went to the cutter. It actually cut over the middle of the plate. Starting over the inner half counts one and one. If that’s where you’re able to throw your strikes, then you better hope for a miss. Now Armstrong at his best this year has done a nice job of working the perimeter of the zone. That last pitch caught a fat part of the plate. Here’s the 1-1 up and in. Almost hit Pettis as it backs him off the dish and they count two and one. Armstrong has thrown 14 pitches. 10 of those pitches have been balls. Couple of those probably designed to get swings and misses, but the Astros haven’t chain a ground ball right side through right field. A base hit one run scores. Pay your rounds third. He comes home and scores and the Astros lead three to two. Well, falling behind in the count and then having to throw a fast ball at two and one. Paradus is a guy who excels at these situations. A 324 hitter this year with scoring position and he produces here on a a fast ball that wasn’t over the heart of the plate, but it was over the outside corner and he went the other way with it. Was over the outside corner but maybe didn’t touch the perimeter of the zone. Probably caught a little too much of the plate. might have been the difference between Freda shooting that one through versus getting too weak of contact for it to get through. First pitch to Walker fouled away. So the Astros no runs through the first 15 innings of this series, but three runs here in the top of the seventh. The 01 to Walker. Check swing. The sweeper misses outside. The count one and one. In the bottom of the seventh, the Rangers have Burgerheim and Smith do up. 89 and one. One pitch. Swinging Walker. It’s a high fly ball to left field and that one’s not coming back. Ling for turns. Watch this. It’s a three-run home run for Christian Walker. He was struggling mightily, but that’s a big bump and the Astros lead six-2. His fifth home run this season. Walker had hit a total of 95 home runs for the Diamondbacks over the last three years. So, better than 30th season. And again, struggling this year, but for him, that one had to feel pretty good. That’s going to be it for Armstrong. Bruce Bochi takes the ball. We’ve got a pitching change in Arlington. A six-run top of the seventh. The Astros lead six-2 on the Rangers Radio Network. Brought by from the city to the country and all across the Lonear State. Go crazy, folks. Go crazy. It’s a home run and the Cardinals have won the game by the star of three to two and a home run by the Wizards. It all started with a one out single from Jake Meyers. Here is the switch hitting Vic Keratini batting from the left side. Ninth Astro to hit in the inning. First pitch, Wind misses upstairs, ball one. W’s had an outstanding start to his 2025 with Triple A round draw 12 appearances 23 and a3 innings ner and earned run 10 swing and that one’s lined down the right field line it is a fair ball one hop and off the wall picked up by Garcia and Keratini is going to have to stop it first he is not nearly fast enough to even consider trying for a double on a ball that got to the wall and he also hit it too hard squared up a pitch from win that was right down the middle. A cutter from the righty and the Diaz batting for the second time in the top of the seventh. And the first pitch from wind to Diaz is a slider that misses for ball one. Win last season with the Rangers made 13 appearances. got off to a really nice start, but once the calendar turned to May, he started to struggle a bit. 10 a swing and a miss. Now one and one. Ended up spending the rest of the year with Triple A Round Rock. Also dealt with an injury that limited his action once he did go down the 1-1 inside. But by all accounts, he’s pitched super well this year. Talking to folks who have seen him because obviously we’ve been watching the Rangers at the big league level said that he’s looked about as good as he’s ever looked. Walks still a little bit of a thing, but won’t give up many hits. Two-1 a big swing and a miss. Hey, that was tipped. Either way, the count’s two and two to Diaz. Win plants his right foot on the first base side of the rubber. Cuts his glove into his left pant leg. Now he comes set of the belt. Two and two. The pitch to Diaz. Low and away. Counts full to Diaz. Six runs on seven hits for the Astros. All six of those runs coming in this inning. Five of the seven hits coming in this inning, including Walker’s three-run homer. 3-2 swinging a hard ground ball through the left side into left field of base nine. Baritini stops at second. He has a single, extends the inning for Meyers, who had a one-out single earlier this inning that got everything going for Houston. And all of this, all of the runs coming after the second out was recorded. Remember the fine catch by Adoleis Garcia on the ball hit by Denzo. And then it was Cam Smith’s two out double. Really got all this cranked up. First pitch, Meyer swings and fouls one back. All right, time for our injury update brought to you by Bailey and Gallion. A lot to choose from, but go to Pittsburgh. 01 is up and in. And this is uh more of an injured ego update. Giwan Bay was optioned to Triple A Indianapolis for the Pirates and really shoehorning this one in there, but want to do so because former Ranger Nick Solak is back in the big leagues getting called up by the Pirates. 1-1 is inside the count two and one. So good for Nick. Rangers acquired Nick years ago in a trade that sent Pete Fairbanks to Tampa. And Nick didn’t play in the major leagues last year and barely played in 2023. Doing one wins pitch. There’s a soft liner to short on one hop. Smith’s got it to his left. Throws to second and that ends the inning. But the Astros score six runs on six hits. Two men left. Stretch time in Arlington. Let’s turn it over to the voice of Globe Life Field, Chuck Morgan. Ladies and gentlemen, will you please rise and direct your attention down the third baseline and welcome back Paul Rogers. Paul will now play God Bless America. Take a guessing which baseball player or man said the following. I really don’t know what to say. I’m just uh so happy I gave something these people cheer. This is his 21st appearance. Opposing hitters batting 141 against him. The first pitch he throws to Burger is a fast ball first strike. Velocity is not a huge part of what he does. His fast ball averages around 92, but he locates well with a fast ball, a sweeper, and then occasionally a sinker. And then twice this year, he’s thrown a change up. Maybe those are mistakes. The tracking the 01 a fast ball fouled back. Count nothing in two. You wonder when you see a guy with King’s metrics from a velocity standpoint, what makes him so good? Change of speed. And the man certainly a part of it. The O2 is upstairs. And the count one and two to Burger. In case you’re wondering, Jake Burgerer has not faced Brian King, nor have a lot of the Rangers, but Jonah and Josh Smith, who are due up second and third, have. One, two. There’s a dribbler up the third base line. If it’s fair, it’s a hit, but it rolls off the lip of the grass and heads foul. Picked up by Pedes wide of the chalk. So, Burgerer unable to collect an infield hit and instead is going to have to walk back to the box. That ball was hit so slowly and stayed fair for such a long time. Burger got to first before the ball actually went foul. on Apple TV. They’re doing a closeup of the turf where it meets the dirt. Sure. Another foul ball. Rangers trying to get something going. They don’t have to get it all back in this inning. Giving up six in the top of the seventh. They find themselves down 6-2. a one-two check swing. And I think Edwin Jimenez says that it was a strike. I’m not sure if he said it was a swing or a strike. Either way, it’s a strikeout. I don’t know that Jake went around. It was awfully close. The pitch did not appear to be in the zone, but maybe it was close enough for it to be a called strike. And looking at our stuff and no, apparently it was a called strike. So one away. The first pitch to high misses. Jonah’s single in the second played the only two runs for the Rangers. One sweeper hit on the ground to third. Pretty for the shutdown inning. First two batters for the Rangers have been retired. Top of the order. It’s Josh Smith. I mentioned Hymedid faced King before. He was 0 for one. He’s now 0 for two. Smith, has faced King once before. He’s 0 for one. And he swings to the first pitch and pops one up middle of the infield. Altuve and Pñena converging. It’s Altuve who makes the call on the catch. And it’s a one, two, three inning for Brian King. Shutdown inning for the Astros. We go to the eighth. It’s 6-2 Houston on the Rangers Radio Network. That’s Mike Piaza after he hit an eighth inning go-ahad home run in the first New York Mets home game after 9/11. Hear moments like this and more on the MLB app and MLB.com. In the eighth eighth inning, in that seventh inning, the Astros sent 11 men to the plate, scored six runs on six hits. In uh both of those cases, the Astros tied their season high for most runs in an inning and most hits in an inning. Denzo is 0 for three. Win starts him off with a fast ball and it’s fouled off of Jonah and Jonah crumples forward in pain here and it’s strike one to Denzo. Denzo is struck out. He is grounded to third. Last time up, he lined out to Adolei Garcia, who made a running catch on the warning track in right field. That was the second out of the inning. There was a real opportunity for the Rangers to get out of that top of the seventh inning without giving up any run, but Cam Smith came up with Meyers at first and two men out. Hit that double off the track in left center and that got the ball rolling. This pitch on the outside edge for a strike. nothing and two the count here to the Senzo. And so that six-run top half of the seventh snapped what had been 15 consecutive scoreless innings for Houston here in this series. Swing and a foul. That one coming straight back. And so the count balls and two strikes. The Astros prior to coming here to Arlington had a come from behind win at home over Kansas City on Wednesday. They were trailing 3-2. Got a couple of runs in the bottom of the eighth. RBI hits for Mauricio Duban and Jeremy Pena. And they ended up winning that game four to three. This pitch in the dirt behind the plate. And so the count to Denzo here at one ball and two strikes. So a big six-run outburst making it a 6-2 ball game. The Astros have doubled up the Rangers in the hit column eight to four. wins pitch swinging a miss on a slider that was down and so he strikes out Denzo to get us started here in the eighth inning and that brings up Cam Smith. What a Burger is always cooking the burgers you’re craving like the all-time favorite sweet and spicy bacon burger at What a Burger. All right, Smith that big runscoring double in the seventh inning. Working on a one for three night. He’s now knocked in 12 runs. Takes this fast ball right at the top of the zone for strike one. Win pitching for the first time in five days. his last outing with Roundrock coming in El Paso. It was an inning of shut out relief. Swing and a miss here and the count now at no balls and two strikes and an opportunity here to get some uh good results under his belt while trying to keep it a four-run ball game. Win, first round pick of the Rangers back in 2018 coming out of high school in California. This pitch is outside and the count one ball and two strikes. Win in fact was uh the uh California State High School pitcher of the year back in his senior year in the year prior to that had the same honor in the state of Colorado. Here’s a pitch that’s grounded foul on the left side. The count will hold the ball in two strikes to the right-handed hitting Cam Smith. As Jared mentioned, Win spent a significant portion of the season last year on the injured list dealing with a sprained pitching shoulder. The one two that fast ball just a little bit high. Two balls in two strikes. But working his way back from that, having a healthy spring training and a healthy start to this year, he’s managed to work his way back to the big league. Bouncing ball foul here again just a little to the left of third. The count will hold at two and two. Back wind’s last two appearances with Round Rock. Both came in hitter friendly El Paso. 2-2 on the way. Check swing. That pitch is outside for full count here to Smith. The longest outing for Cole this season with the Express, three innings, and he did that on a couple of different occasions. Last time would have been April the 19th in Reno. 3-2. That ball hit to the left side just beyond the reach of Young just past Smith and out into left field. So Smith finds a hole there on the left side and singles. He’s now two for four, ninth hit for Houston. You know, a big Oh, I’m sorry, Matt. Go ahead. Go ahead. I was going to say a big difference. You know, not that all contact is good contact, but the last three innings, the Rangers don’t have a base runner and they’ve struck out four times. The last three innings, the Astros have struck out twice and they’re putting the ball in play, giving themselves chances, especially with men on. There’s Pñena hitting one to third. Young has it. Little double clutch. Goes to second for one onto first. Not in time. Young got to that ball quickly, but I guess had a hard time getting a handle on it before he could let the ball go. So they get the lead runner, Smith here, reaching first on the fielder’s choice is Pena. But Pñena now 0 for four. And that brings up Jose Alt. And I don’t know even with a quick release if he gets Pñena. Pñena one of the faster runners in baseball. But man, talk about timing. Talking about how, oh, just put in the ball and play is a good thing. Almost an inning ending double pitch later. I I would have been okay with it, trust me. But so here’s Altuve and Win throws him a fast ball at the top of the zone for strike one. Altuve 0 for three, but a walk. Big part of that six-run top half of the seventh. Rangers trailing here six-2 as we play in the eighth. win with the 01 and he’ll miss outside there with the cutter to make it one ball and one strike. Jared mentioned earlier Altuve a history of success in this building. This is his 34th game played in the regular season here and he’s a career 313 hitter in this park. Here’s a swing and a foul out of play right side. One and two the count. a career OPS in this park during the regular season, just under a thousand. And of course, he’s also had some postseason success in this ballpark, most notably in game five of the 2023 American League Championships here. The one two that’s outside. Two balls, two strikes that count here to Altuve. Simeon playing up the middle and Mcberger holding Pñena at first. The right side of the infield completely open. Win a quick glance over to Pñena and now he disengages just steps off. Resets the pitch clock which resets to 20 seconds when there are men on bait. Pña at first. Two men out. Top of the eighth. win into the glove and the two- two pitch and that’s hit on the ground over third but just fouled. So indicated very calmly by the third base umpire Mark Ripper so we’ll keep it at two balls and two strikes. Rangers have Langford Peterson and Garcia do up in the bottom half of this inning. Long walk for Altuve. Ball coming off his bat. He figured it might just be fair. So he tore down the line. Just now picks up the bat. Circles behind Jonah to step into the right-handed hitters batter. Albe touches the plate once with his bat. Looks out to win. Right-hander sets and throws. And this one’s fouled off. He’s allowed just 11 hits and five walks in 18 innings while striking out 26. hater with 209 career saves, most of those with Milwaukee, but last year 34 saves with Houston over the course of his 71 appearances. He is a sinker slider change pitcher. Usually those guys are ground ball pitchers, but her really never has been a ground ball pitcher. More of a flyball pitcher. And here in the ninth, he takes on Simeon Young and Carter. Again, not a safe situation here for Josh her. Marcus Simeon tonight, 0 for two, was hit by a pitch back in the third inning. And swings and misses here for strike one. How rare is it for Marcus Simeon to be hit by a pitch? It’s the first time this year and just the 23rd time in his career that he’s been hit by a pitch. The 01 check swing. The pitch comes in low. Did he go? Yes. on appeal the first base umpire Nick Lent and Marcus quickly behind in the count here at nothing and two hater the sixth pitcher of the night for Houston and the 02 that bounces him that’ll make it one ball and two strikes Young on deck Carter do up after him. The one two swing and a miss. Elevated fast ball takes care of Simeon. First out here in the bottom of the ninth brings up Josh Young. Our uh what a play of the game. We go all the way back to the top half of the third inning and the very fine play that Josh Smith made on Jeremy Pena to get the first out in that top half of the third. Our what a play brought to you by What a Burger. Young one for three and he looks at a fast ball on the outside corner for strike one. Josh singled and scored the first of two Texas runs in the bottom half of the second. The 01 swing and a miss and that change up that was down. So nothing and two the count. Young 0 for five lifetime against hater. You know it’s interesting that spatada has consistently used guys like a brau and hater in these spots as this pitcher is fouled up and out of play. And you know, we’ve always said just because it isn’t a save doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use a guy when a team could in theory tie the game with one swing. I don’t mind it. But the opportunity for the Rangers here, yeah, come back, tie the game, extend the game, great. The odds of that happening, not outstanding. As this pitch is low, one and two, but they’re obviously going to give it their best effort to do it. But what you can do, even if you come up short, you make hater work, make him throw enough pitches, you either get a little exposure to him in a positive way, or oh, maybe you make him unavailable tomorrow night. This pitch is low. Good take by Young. Pitch was over the plate. Count two and two. So, you know, in these spots, this is where you think bigger than just this game. Again, you’d love to win this one, but here’s the thing. You got two outs left and you’re down six to2 against one of the game’s best closers as this pitch is lifted fouled out of plate down the right field line. So, how can you give yourself an edge tomorrow? Well, you’ve already made the Astros show you some of their better relievers. Well, Brian Abra, who didn’t have to work particularly hard, but you know, if he faces Langford Peterson and Garcia tomorrow, they’ll have already seen him. Maybe you can make hater work just a little bit to empty the gas tank a touch. There’s a ball hit high into the air deep right field. Smith going back. He gets back to the wall and this one’s out of here. Josh Gunn with an opposite field home run down the right field line. It’s his seventh of the season now six to three. Rangers back to within three. He loves facing left-handed closers or hardth throwing closers. Doesn’t really matter whether it’s Mason Miller or here the lefty and Josh her. He has success against some of the best late game relievers. And the Rangers able to cut into this deficit. And now that Christian Walker three-run home run really looming large again for Josh, his seventh home run, his 18th run batted in came on a 2-2 sinker from her. And now time called as Keratini goes out to have a word here with Josh her. Sam Hagerty coming in and you know the Rangers have an interesting decision perhaps coming up. Kevin Polar potentially being ready to come off the IIL. I don’t know that you can keep them both unless there’s another injury that pops up and well perhaps Polar not a guy with options maybe making the decision a little more interesting. So here’s Hagerty batting for Carter and Hagerty swings and pops one up high into the air left side of the infield. Pena is under it and the shorts stop squeezes it for the second out in the inning. That brings up Jake Burgerer here. Burger one for three. Had a looping single out into left center. That was back in the fourth inning. It’s tough. One pitch, one out. Now a lot of people are going to say, “Oh, why’d he swing in the first pitch? I don’t know what Sam Hagerty was looking for. If he was looking for a sinker down in the zone, then that’s a good decision, right? He got what he was looking for. He just didn’t get good wood on. And here Burgerer gets a fast ball at the top of the zone for strike one. But if he was looking for a fast ball up, then that’s not a good decision, right? In those situations, you want to you’ll be very selective. But pitching’s good. Pitchers are good. swinging a miss here on a slider that was toward the outside part of the plate and Jake behind in the count at nothing and two. So sometimes you get the pitch you’re looking for and you’re just not able to square it up. That’s that works. Now I mentioned Polaro options. Hagerty out of options as well for what it’s worth. And Burger down to a final strike here behind in the counting and two. Here’s the set by her and the two strike pitch. a swing and a bouncing ball foul right in front of third base coach Tony Beasley Burgerer facing a hater for a third time in previous encounters. He has walked once and struck out once. Hey Josh Young with that home run, a two for four night. He’s going to be our player of the game. Brought to you by Perimeter Logistics.
