Rays vs. Marlins Game Highlights (5/17/25) | MLB Highlights
Speaking of Sandy Alcantra, 29-year-old right-hander making his ninth start of the season and his seventh career start against the Rays this afternoon. Well, Josh Low waits on the first offering and swings and drives it in the air toward left center over and back on the run as a left fielder and this one bangs off the wall on the fly. Josh Low will coast into second with a double on the first pitch of the ball game. The Rays have something cooking. 3-1 with a runner at second. Just underway. Up and away. Ball four and the Rays have two on and nobody out. Hit softly out to short. So flips to Simon. No throw to first. Lao had something to do with the disruption and the Rays are going to challenge this play. I’m not sure Simon had his foot on the bag. Thought I saw the play stands. The runner is out and Tampa will lose their challenge. Bigbodied right-hander Sandy Alcantra set in the 2-2. That one cut on and missed. A tailing sinker started inside, drifted onto the inner half and Aronda cut and whiffed at 99 mph an hour. Runner goes at first, pitches outside. A ball throw to second. Not in time. Stolen base for Yandi. His third in as many chances. 3-2. That one cut on and missed. 100 m an hour off the outer block. And Sandy Alcantra looks like the guy. And now Drew Rasmusson is making his ninth start of the season. Record just 1 and4 with the ERA 338. You can live with that. And certainly that whip 1.05. He does a good job of limiting base runners. That little infield dribbler from Norby set the table for Sters. And now two aboard with two out. That sets the stage for Eric Wagaban. The pitch swing and a miss. He got him. Sharp cutter from Jerasmus and his first strikeout will end a scoreless first inning. It’s taken him some pitches to get through two innings. He’s about to throw his 36th payoff pitch. That one right down Broadway at 99 miles an hour. Might have been on the outer half, but Jansen was looking at it and Sandy froze him with a sinker. Nobody on. Two outs here at Lone Depot Park as this pitch is swung on and lined to third and Jose Caviierro makes a diving catch to his right. What a play by the Rays third baseman to deny Hicks a hit. And Drew Raspersonson has now retired seven in a row. Aronda the well balanced approach at the plate. Balanced stance. Two two pitch liner right at the shorts stop. Senoa grabs it in the air on the backand for the second half. It’s really nice play by Senoha by the way. That one was hit pretty hard from Ronda about 96. It was in on his hands and a little bunny hop. Senoha gets some style points for leaving the ground on that one. One-two pitch hit in the air to center field. Sters will range over. Puts the hand out. Said, “I got it.” And he does. And another one, two, three inning. That’s 11 in a row. Now Kyle Sters is up in the black and pink of the Marlin City Connect unis. There’s a fly ball in the air deep into the corner and left. And Simpson can’t make the catch. Sters will pull into second with a double. Boy, Simpson got all turned around there in the corner. He overruns it and then he can’t readjust to make a play out there. Sters will take it. One-1 ground ball right back to Rasmus and now they’ve got Sters hung up between second and third. It’s an unfortunate break there for the Marlins. Sters took off and was stuck right in the middle and the Rays able to make the play. He is one strike away from retiring Simon. Here he comes. Swing and a miss. He does. Fast ball way upstairs at 96 gets him and Drew Rasmusson with his second punch out in a scoreless bottom of the fourth. It’s full on Cababayro who’s giving Junior Cabanero a day off at third base. Swinging a little roller up the third base side trouble if it’s fair. It will stay fair and it’s an infield hit for Jos Cabierro to start the fifth inning. And Neil, the Marlins have allowed 70 stolen bases in 78 attempts this season. Runner goes, pitches a strike, throw to second is late at a stolen base for Caviierro. And the Rays get a man in scoring position for the first time since the first inning. Up and in and it hit Jansen. I think that got him on the arm guard. Two on now and one out for the Rays in this scoreless game for Chandler Simpson. He goes, pitches outside of ball throw to third and he didn’t get in there. No, he got in. He’s safe. Cabiro must have gone to the back of the bag if he got his hand in there. puts men at the corners and he did get in there with one out and a three-0 count on Chandler Simpson. Swinging a line drive into center field, a base hit for Chandler Simpson. Cabierro scores. It’s a riby single up the middle for Chandler Simpson. He does get some redemption and the Rays strike first. They’ve got a one- nothing lead now in the fifth inning with men at the corners and still one out. The pitch to Josh Low. Runner goes, it’s in the dirt for a ball and no throw to second. Stolen base for Chandler Simpson. Four stolen bases for the Rays against Elcontra today. There’s ball fork. So the bases are loaded and it’ll be El Contra against Yandi Diaz with a chance to open it up. Swinging a line drive through the hole in a right base hit. Jansen scores. Here comes Simpson. It’s a two-run single for Yandi Diaz. He indeed comes through against Alcantra and the Rays have a three-run fifth and a three nothing lead. Lao stopped at second as Jonathan Aronda steps in. 01 pitch. Broken bat liner through the middle. It’s into center field. A base hit. Racing home is Brandon Laauo. He’ll score without a throw. RBI single for Aronda. Get that gets him off the schneide. The Rays have scored three with two out in the fifth. They have four in the frame. They’re up four nothing now. Rasmusen singing the sixth inning for only the the second time. He started the sixth inning against the Yankees on April the 18th. Got into the sixth inning. Line drive. That is a fair ball. Base hit down the line of right field. Hicks around first. He’s trotting it to second as the ball is retrieved. And with the four nothing deficit, he did not think about a triple even rounding first. You could tell he was going to hold up at second, but nice job for Hicks. Marlins get their second double of the game. And it’s even at two balls and two strikes. You can see much deeper counts here in the six in the first handful of innings for Rasmus. Little fister toward first. It’s going to be caught by Jonathan Oronda on a pop out on the hands of Norby. And that’ll leave it for Kyle Sters. Drew Rasmmanson one out away from getting through six innings today. And that would be the first time this year he did go five and two/3 once. Swing and a miss. He got him with a cutter. And Rasmusen for the first time this year with six innings on the books. As we go to the ninth in Miami, Tampa Bay ahead four nothing in game two as a ground ball past the mount towards second. Simon has it throws on the run and not in time. Chandler Simpson beats the play. man on to start the ninth with the Rays up four zip. Still looking for his first hit here in Miami after the big series in Toronto. Next pitch is looped into shallow center. That’s going to drop base hit. Fielded on a hop by Sour. Here comes Simpson. Here comes a throw home and he is out at the plate. I mean it looked like his face went right into the dirt on that finger first slide. He’s still down on the ground sprawled behind home plate. Kind of a hush came over this crowd as now with some help Chandler gets to his feet and he’s going to walk off under his own power. It is Pete Fairbanks on in the bottom of the ninth for Tampa Bay trying to lock up this four nothing win. This will be what just the third shut out for the Rays this year as the first pitch is popped up off the bat of Kyle Sters. Underneath it is Cameron Meisner. He reaches up and Pete Fairbanks has one pitch and one out on the ninth. High fly ball to fairly medium right field. Circling in and around it is Josh Low. He reaches up, makes the catch and two down. The base is empty in the ninth. Four nothing Rays. Ground ball to first. Should end it. Backhanded by Aronda. He’ll take it to the base himself. Retire Simon and the Rays have a bounceback win and their third shutout victory of the season thanks to a four-run fifth. They beat the Marlins 4 nothing.
