Mikko Rantanen Unmatched In Dallas Stars History, Says Former Broadcaster | DLLS Stars Podcast

Is there any comparison to any other player? No. No. Okay. History. Well, I was going to say is Mike in that category. New in that category. I mean, I would say no, but I mean, this guy is just carrying the load. Yes. I’ve never seen anyone like this for the Stars. I mean, the one guy I will compare him to in this way is Zubaf in that he can take over a game and he can say, “Okay, like I’m going to run this now and this is how we’re going to win it.” And Zubie could give people the puck or not give people the puck or Right. And you know, and um and Zubie would say, “We’re going to, you know, like with his play, you know, now it’s time to go and now we’re going to go and now he’d look up the ice instead of doing a quick one.” He’d, you know, he’d spot somebody and he’d and he’d and he’d, this is the dumbest thing, and he’d ignite an attack. I don’t I mean, just plain and simple, cuz Jacques Taylor uh texted me this morning and he said, “What’s what?” He said, “What what is it about this guy?” And I said, “Well, you know, it’s a lot. It’s power and it’s speed and it’s the ability to create. It’s the ability to dominate, but it’s also the way he wins battles to start plays or the way he I mean, when does he when he’s on his game, he doesn’t lose a puck battle and he doesn’t lose a one-on-one battle and a lot of times he doesn’t lose a one-on-one or one-on-ree battle. That wraparound goal like he’s coming and I could see it at the line like soon as he crossed you’re like, “Oh, this guy’s hitting a different speed here.” And he went at that with three guys in three lanes. Mhm. the goalie there and a fourth guy coming in and he got the goalie so messed up that you know yeah he you know yeah he got a good bounce but um what’s the kid’s name again? Blackwood. Blackwood. Blackwood wasn’t there. He didn’t get across on it like and that was I mean you watch that play alone and you say this is a guy you watch yesterday’s game the goal he scored it was another one of those he comes down the slot and it’s like you know this is my slot this is my slot and I know there’s other people here and I know they want the puck too and they’re going to try and block my but I don’t care like and I’m going to hold it and that’s like Zubie right I’m going to hold it I’m going to hold it there’s going to be a better play there’s going to be a better play and then he makes the the best play and that’s why I I liken him the Zubuff a little bit which is I’m not going to make that first one. I’m not going to make that second one, right? Cuz maybe there’s a better play and he always waits for that better play. I don’t How’s How’s McFarland and Joe Sack? I mean, you know, like yeah, Essa Lindell caused their special teams coach to lose. No, he didn’t. Miko Ranton did. Somebody had to pay for that. And it sure as hell wasn’t going to be McFarland or sack. They’re kind of the guys of the mouths. Yes. Right. Very. Oh, it’s a complete 360. See how I My friend used to say that way. My friend used to say it’s complete 360. That’s Nico guide but not Mo, right? We Yeah, we got here. It’s Yeah, Nico’s a dummy and we can Okay, so Mo with an M because to me there’s still some guys with the stars right now that we’re not noticing a lot. Yeah. Too many. So, what happens when Mo gets taken taken away? That’s the thing, right? So, I think I think we’re all worried about the same thing. Now, we’ve seen like yesterday, we saw a little more involvement. We saw, you know, Wyatt found it. Again, it’s important. Um, and I don’t know if you read this in Substack, Ralph Stack. Yeah. Substack. Ralph Stack. Subscribe today. Thank you. Um, but uh uh uh what did I say? You want me to remind you of the Substack thing? Yeah, Substack. You were talking about Wyatt before you started talking about and I said the other day like goal scorers can’t go so far without scoring a goal because if it goes two three games then sometimes it goes a while and so the more that they’re able to keep that goal scoring momentum up you know it’s that it’s oxygen to those guys right like they have to score they yeah okay we can check we can oh you know you’re not you’re not digging in with the rest of us if you don’t block a shot I got a hundred guys to block shots I don’t want my skilled guys getting hurt breaking an ankle on a block shot. I want him to get hurt. If they’re going to get hurt, get hurt on a scoring play, you know, like leave it. I know that’s against the old culture and all that stuff, but it’s like I don’t know why we even put that in our heads. Oh, Obie’s now a real player because he’s, you know, honest to God. I like, no, he’s a real player because he scored 900 goals. Like, come on. And um so I so I really like um skilled players to, you know, singers sing and dancers dance in the playoffs. That’s what I like. I know they’re like, “Well, everybody’s got to play like a third and fourth liner.” I don’t want to do it that way. And when you do it this way, let’s see. And that’s what I think Ranton’s doing is he’s kind of dragging everybody out of the, “Hey, maybe maybe we don’t have to just sit back and wait for them to crack.” And, you know, like maybe we can actually attack this without Miko Ranton, they don’t get past Colorado. Exactly. Not even close. See, here’s my And again, we can do this. We can look ahead. They They’re not supposed to. And they don’t. Just quick. But they do, don’t they? You can’t help it. Yeah, I know. It’s It’s hard, but I’m looking ahead to the next round. That’s what I’m talking Well, that’s what I’m saying. Yeah, because now I’m going, okay, if Dallas is what we’re seeing out of them and Mo, not Mo, where if if that is the case and it continues to be the case and there aren’t other people that step up is the easiest fix to take 97 and put them against 96 in the next round. I think the uh the first responder agrees with you. So if you take one guy that can might be able to negate that for sure. I mean now we didn’t have and we didn’t have that until we got Ratman. That’s right. Right. Did you see was it Cadre’s text about the dog? Yeah. Dog. You don’t trade a dog. What was No, you don’t trade the dog. You don’t trade the dog. Why you Why you keep the dog? What in the What are they think? I mean, now I thought they had an offer that was close to what Dallas gave them if it wasn’t Well, when it’s all said and done with everything averaged in there and tax, all this other kind of stuff. It is. Yeah. So, I just wonder Well, did it get to the point where it just lingered in this and it just pissed him off to the point? But I you know what I just ran into um as a matter of fact, his son may be playing for us. Uh Vladimir Terosenko. Right. The other day he was in with his his son here. Yeah. Yeah. Name dropping. That’s what we’re doing. Hang on. What do you need? You need a gummy. Picked up your name. Okay. Okay. Um, let me get No idea where you’re going. I did not. What is wrong with Can you go with the show a little bit here? Well, Listen, I’m usually okay, but I’m I’m up against it now. I know you’re Well, you know, cuz I’m not going to let you get away. These guys idolize you. Oh, no. They adore you. They say, “Okay, nobody.” Good. Then they’re all with me. You know how to keep track. We all know you. We all know. See now, now where were we? I don’t know. Name dropping. I don’t even know why I brought that up. Carroenko’s son’s going to play for us possibly. He’s a goalender, though. Okay. And what And there was something there that has to do with the rant in contract negotiations for me. Well, I came in here about 145. Here’s what happened here. Here’s where here’s where I was going with this. what Vlad says to me and is this part of what Renon was saying is I want to play on that team in Dallas. That’s what I want to play with. Those are the kind of pieces I want. and Terara Senko, we were just kind of joking about it and I did send a message to one of the guys there and they gave me a total different story when Teraraenko gave me but when before he left he goes, “Hey, if you can talk to some I really want to play these guys and and wonder if that had something to do with rant and obviously he saw something in in in Carolina that he didn’t he didn’t cater to the kind of style that they play which is like that. Well, but did he have any input on that one? Well, going to Carolina, not going there, but once he got there, once he got there, I I I mean, I I don’t think that suits his style. It’s not his style. Tell me what you think. This is my take on it. I think have you met Sam? The rep. Hi, Sam. I think I know. Does Sam ever get involved in the show? Oh, yeah. We try all the time. Listen, I read Sam and I always we we kind of we are in the same We got it. Sam and I are good. What’s your He’s on He’s on Ralph’s stack. What’s yours called? I don’t have one. You don’t? No. Why not? I’m sorry. City again. I’m sorry. Ralph Stack on Substack at Substack. I think that Rantin’s representatives thought that they could play hard ball because they knew Mo didn’t want to leave. I think that Sack McFarland got nervous that he was going to leave in free agency and said, “We’re not going to lose him for nothing. We’re frustrated with this negotiation. Let’s get something for him.” possibly misreading the fact I was going to say that he wanted to stay, but maybe also the representative maybe the agent said played too much hard ball not realizing that Mo did not want to leave and then and then obviously once he gets to Carolina he tries it. He was adamant that he gave it a real Yeah, Sam’s words at three. That’s great. What happened? Oh, we got a little counter there on the bottom. We got stub substack plugs versus Sam’s words. So I think he and he said this Ralph when he first got to Dallas he specifically made a point to bring it out to the media that he tr gave them a real shot and it wasn’t until about a week before the deadline that he went to the Hurricanes and said if you want to trade me I don’t think I’m going to sign here but he he insists that he was of open mind at the trade. Well and and I mean so like there’s two places right? There’s what happened in Colorado and what happened in Carolina. My guess is what happened in Carolina once what happened in Colorado was there that yeah, it was very this ain’t gonna work. Yep. You want some assets back? Get some assets back because you guys spent a lot to get me. I’m I don’t want to sign here. And he thinks he’s doing the right thing by them. He’s doing them a favor. I Oh, I believe that if they don’t think they could get him signed like that is the best way to handle that, right? Which is, you know, don’t you think? Well, but the but the understanding was is he wasn’t going in there and asking for more money than McKinnon. That wasn’t what he was doing. He was using the percentage cap. I’m talking about Carolina. Once he gets to Carolina, he’s like, “Look, this this ain’t going to happen. I’m not going to tell you. Please get some of your ass to get me.” That’s very fair. Yeah. Very cool. And imagine if Carolina traded Drury, Nous, and Picks and lost him in free agency. Nay Cash, right? It would have been an absolute mess for the Hurricanes. Oh, for sure. They had made that move and had nothing to show. No, the Carolina piece of this was was very well handled by all parties, I think. Right. I think so. Now, the Colorado piece of this is I’m going to freaking I’m going to go little Patty Dumont and and dumb Nico on him, which is how the hell do you let this guy go? It’s true. And and in the Mavericks case, how the hell do you actively push him up? This wasn’t, you know, well, we’re having trouble signing him. We’re having that. We’re having that. None of that was happening with the Mavericks. He was signing. He was going to sign the supermax. That was going to be it. He was here. He was a lifer. That statue was going right on the other side. Right. So, you have four corners and then the the other one would be So, it’d be in front. Yeah, I know. I was getting there. So, it’s it’s it’s Dirk and it’s Mike and then we’d put Luca here and Luddy on the other side. That’s my That’s why he’s pointing at you. That’s what I’m seeing.

Former Dallas Stars play-by-play broadcaster Ralph Strangis joined the DLLS Stars Podcast to discuss Mikko Rantanen putting the Stars on his BACK for much of this postseason run.

  1. We knew Mikko is dynamite in the playoffs, but holy moose he really found his groove at the right time. Get him some backup and it might be the Stars' year!

  2. This interview with Ralph was nuts. Such a wacky fella. I miss his calls and was fairly bummed when he left. I grew up listening to his voice, but we are also so spoiled to be able to listen to Josh.

  3. I am at complete disbelief at how well the Moose has played during these playoffs. Unreal. That being said, other guys like Duchene, Seguin, Hintz, Granlund et al have also played better than their stats give them credit for. Not to mention the defence and Otter

  4. Rantanen did say in Finnish TV that he was ready to take much less money then his market value Is to stay in Colorado but still they didnt want him. Hi from FINLAND 🇫🇮

  5. I remember when the North Stars moved to Dallas, I had moved from Minnesota the Year before for the Airforce and ended up spending my whole career in Texas. I remember Ralph announcing the Whataburger What a Shot and I asked what a whatburger was. Lol

  6. My brother-in-law plays in a NY beer league in which Zubov laces up every now and then, and said he hasn’t lost a step whatsoever. He effortlessly skates around players half his age like pylons and launches wristers from the blue line harder than most guys slap shot? And he’s in his mid 50’s playing against young men with skills!!! Dude is 1 in a 100 million.

  7. I can honestly say, I have literally not seen a player take over a game the way Rantanen has, since Wayne Gretzky in the late '80s and early '90s. Never thought I would see it again. Stars are very fortunate to have Mikko right now, playing like he is.

  8. The Avalanche and Canes didn't want him and the Leafs couldn't obtain him because selfish Marner refused to be traded to the Canes.

  9. If Rantanen gets cold/injured, it's time for others to step up, but when you have the hottest playoff performer of NHL history you play the livings s*hit out of him.

  10. Bruh I have so many memories of Modano taking over a game, and you couldnt even catch him.

I get it its out of sight out of mind, but Modano did the same thing for Dallas in the 90's /00's era

Nowhere near this obviously, but to take over a game and get the Win, yes modano did this as well
