Rays vs. Marlins Game Highlights (5/18/25) | MLB Highlights
In the finale between the Marlins and the Rays, in the finale of installment number one of the 2025 version of the Citrus Series on the bound for the Marlins, the veteran right-hander, the 30-year-old out of Port Hope, Canada. Calantro cut off a couple of good starts. Yandi Diaz will come strolling to the plate. He’s the leadoff hitter today. Nick’s pitch is lined into left field. It’s a base hit for Yandi Diaz. So the first righty at the plate gets a base hit. And that is how we get started. And now after the leadoff single, there’s two away. And after a scheduled off day, Junior Camro back in the lineup. That one hit high in the sky right behind the plate. Foul ground, but playable. Shaded towards the first base side. You got MVIS making the catch in foul ground. So MVIS comes to bail out Liam Hicks and Cal Quattro works around a leadoff single for a scoreless top of the first. Taking the mount this afternoon for the Tampa Bay Rays. righthander Shane Bos making his ninth start of the season. Back-to-back singles for the Marlins. Already two really great at bats by Sanchez who took a fast ball the opposite way. And now you have Ramirez shooting one the opposite way with 110 mph velocity off his bat. Now the Marlins have to somehow put a run on the board here in the first frame. They just do. Here’s Connor Norby. It should be two walls to Lao to Aronda. Two down with a runner getting to third. And Sanchez, pitcher’s best friend. And that’s now the seventh ground ball double play that Shane Bos has been able to roll up. Boy, did he need that. Swinging a miss. He got him anyway for strike three. And Bos can walk off the mound knowing he struck out Sters two times. Two hits a man left at third base. We’re through one scoreless. Scoreless after an inning of play. Quantrol was able to work around the leadoff single. Quantrol’s one-two swinging a miss. Went upstairs with a cutter to get him. First strike out of the day for Cal. That’s one of the best hitters in Major League Baseball so far this year. And Quantrol with his new favorite toy. The cut has him put away for out number one right there. Called strike three. Cal has a one, two, three inning with a couple of Ks on a cutter and a sinker. And we go to the bottom of the second. No score now. Eric Wagaman. We’re scoreless in the bottom of the second. That one pumped out to right center field. That may split the gap. You got Low and Meisner working back. That one hops over the wall in right center field. Eric Wagman put a charge into one. the other way and a hot shot liner off the bat at 105 m anph is a one out double. Well, now it’s up to Bos to make another big pitch with two out and a runner in scoring position. Scoreless game in the second. Here’s Liam Hicks batting left. He’ll give the Marlins the lead. Low will fire in. We got a play. He is out to retire the side. From where he was in right center, I did not think there was a play, but boy was there ever. What a cannon. What an absolute cannon by Josh Low on the fly to Ben Roett and that cuts down the potential first run of the game. What a job by the Rays keeping the game scoreless and it’s runners at the corners for the Rays. So he goes to third and here come the Rays. A single from Ben Wart sets up runners at the corners and nobody out for Yandi Diaz. Diaz has an RBI in each of the first two games of this series. Swing and a grounder smack to short. It could be two. Senoa goes to second, but it’s dropped there by Otto Lopez. In to score from third is Walls. And the Rays have a one- nothing lead here in the third inning. That will surely be an E4 charge to Otto Lopez. They got plenty of time to turn this. It’s a great feed and Lopez just drops it. About as unforced of an error as you’ll see in the game. Boy, could that lead to a huge inning? Oh, those are the ones you really have to make them hurt. Bases are loaded now with nobody out. One-1 is sent into center field. This is sinking fast. On it is Sters. He makes the catch and the runner from third stays put. That was Wardfett who wasn’t ready to tag up. He was halfway down the line. He came down. He thought it was going to drop. Then he tried to get back to the bag to tag up and then when he got there it was too late. He slipped and they couldn’t send him home. And that’s a ground ball hit to second. Lopez shuffles, fields and fires to Senoha. And the throw to first is in time. An inning ending 463 double play. DP number 12 hit it to by Camero. 463. The Marlins escape giving up just one run in the top of the third. Jonathan Aronda will be the batter. Left-hand swinging first baseman against Cal Quantrol who induces a swing and a miss with the first offering on a cutter. Nothing won the count to the leadoff batter Jonathan Aronda. 56 total pitches coming into this inning for Quantrol. Swing and a miss on the cutter. That cutter again 89 miles an hour gets strikeout number three for Quantrol. Second time he has fanned Aronda. Here’s the pitch to Morell. Fast ball over bottom of the zone for strike one. Good sinker at 94 from Quantrol. Go one pitch. Good curve ball. Haven’t seen too many of those either. Dropped way out of the strike zone. Caught on a miss by Morell. Good fast ball called strike three. Backto back strikeouts by Quantrol to begin the fourth. That’s the fourth strikeout for Quantrol. Swinging a foul back. There is strike number seven. Seven in a row for Cal Quantrol. Oh, one to Meisner. Another strike. He is all over the strike zone here in the fourth inning. Quantrol is now one strike away from an immaculate inning. The O2 is swung on it. Miss strike three. Do it. Do it, Cal. That is an immaculate inning for Cal Quantrol. Nine pitches, all strikes. He rings up the side here in the top of the fourth. And MVIS leads off the bottom of the fourth for Miami. rounds out to second and broke his bat back in the second. That is ripped and fair for MVIS down the right field line. He’s on his way to second. That’s a leadoff double for Matt MVvis to begin the bottom of the fourth and he can exhale a big old sigh of relief. And now the Marlins have first and third. A real threat brewing here in the fourth. Nobody out. Second hit of the day for Eric Wagaman. Two for two with a single and a double. Marlins have had all kinds of base runners in this game. They’ve actually belted seven hits. They have a couple of doubles and nothing to show for it yet. So that’ll bring on Otto Lopez. Ripped deep to left field. Back is Morell. He’s looking. It is gone. Otto Lopez. Welcome back. His third homer of the year. The Marlins finally capitalize. Way back there and gone. A go ahead three-run homer for Otto Lopez. His third of the season here in the fourth. 105 off the bat, 401 ft to left center field and the home run hat on Cal Quattro who was immaculate last inning. It is just the second immaculate inning in Marlins history. 2-2 is cut on and missed and Cal has sent down number one the last six that he’s seen and number two the last four be a strikeout. What a fly ball out to right fairly deep. Sanchez working back and shy the track. He’s got room. He makes the catch couple feet shy of the warning track and Cal Quattro gets through five innings of oneun ball. Quantro must be done. He’s down there laughing, smiling, getting hugs, handshakes. He may not have known that he threw an immaculate inning. Maybe that’s what they’re laughing about. Good for him. And look at all those guys down there. They’re hoping they can throw an immaculate inning sometime. Hey, he’s happy. He’s on base three times in this game. That’s a walk to lead off the sixth inning. And there’s one gone here in the sixth inning. But advancing to second is Wagman. He’s now in scoring position with one out for Liam Hicks. There’s a fly ball in the air. Right field and deep and gone for Liam Hicks. He’s a ball player. William Hicks with his fourth home run of the year. The Marlins have hit the first two of the series in this game and they lead five to one. William Hicks is swinging it, man. 101 off the bat. 370 ft out to right field. What a great find it was for the Marlins to draft him in the rule five draft last off season. What a find. Top of the ninth inning for the Marlins on the verge of securing their first series victory over the Rays going all the way back to 2018. And they do send Bender trying to preserve this four-run lead. It’s popped in the air left side. Anthony Bender’s coming. This ball game is over. It’s a citrus series rubber match victory for the Marlins and they slug their way to a W today.
