Marlins STUN the Cubs with a walk-off in the ninth! (feat. Jesús Sánchez game-winning double!)
Daniel Palencia is on for his second career save. Now, this has been a little bit closer by committee. The Cubs have six different pitchers with at least one save this season. And Valencia is not one of them trying to get his first of the year. Don’t have to tell you he’s got triple digits. That’s a light hund. Yeah. Presley leads the way with four. He was used in the seventh tonight. Pomearans was used in a scoreless eight. So here is Palencia. Yeah, he’ll use that with a slider. So fast ball averages 98 to 100. Sliders about 20 20% of the time. Similar to an Edwin Diaz if you think about it. Hard to pull the trigger. 101. [Music] got a piece of it. Yeah, you you have to be ready for the 101 and then you’re a little bit out front of that slider. Norby, Hicks, and Hill with MVvis, Paulie, Simon, and Forez on the bench. If you could get a runner on, you could consider pinch hitting maybe Derek Hill for one of your bigger hitters, say a Matt Mervvis. He’s obviously struggling mightily right now, but maybe a chance you’d consider, hey, one big swing, we could win it. But you got to get somebody on first. See what Clayton does here in the ninth. See what Norby does. The one-two rolls over on a slider. Well, I’ll tell you one thing. He’s he’s giving Palencia a battle. Sure is. More you see, the better chance you have. This will be pitch number seven. And again the one two and out in front of a slider. [Music] One thing you know about Conor Norby, he’s really not scared of velocity. He he’s got a little edge to him. He’s He’s willing to face whatever. And again he kicks and fires the one two. 25year-old hardth throwing right-hander out of San Carlos in Venezuela in his third season with the Cubs. A lot of high octane fuel on that list. Swinging a miss. Went back upstairs with 101. Did you hear the pop of that man? So tough when you’ve seen a few sliders too. And once it’s elevated in that part of the zone, probably a little out of the zone as a hitter, there is no way you can lay off that pitch. This is a guy too that’s totally turned around his big league career this season. He had a 445 RA in 27 appearances in 2023. In 10 appearances last season, a 614 RA in 13 appearances this season, pitching to the tune of a 1.20 earned run average. Say he’s found his footing in the big leagues. Ext. Well, he’s seen two 101s. one down in the zone a little bit and that last one up in the zone. Well, you know, Hicks will battle. He’s hitting 343 with two strikes this season. The league average is 169. He’s 12 for 35 with two strikes on him this year. League leader, former Marlin Luis Arise. And now Palencia is 02. Overcooked that. Ground ball up the middle to the backand of her. He’s got it. He throws out hitch. Two away. Nice. thought it was a nice play and the ball came up too and he he was able to keep that backhand go up with the hop and make the catch and then as an infielder you realize who the runner is not a speedster in Liam Hicks so he he knew he had a little bit of time to make that play and get the throw. So, it comes down to Derek Hill, who’s one for three tonight, and he is as deep as one could possibly get in the batters box to give himself a chance here. [Music] [Applause] [Applause] 0 and two the count. Marlins down a run here in the bottom of the ninth. In the air to right center field, Tucker is on the move. move. He’s not going to get there. This bounces on the track and over the wall. And the tying run is at second with two outs now for Javier Sonoha. A lot of Cubs fans will question that pitch after blowing a couple of fast balls by Derek Hill. He goes with a slider and he hangs it. Boy, it’s like a Christmas gift in in May when you get that hanging slider from a guy throwing over a hundred just out of the reach of Tucker and the Marlins got that tying run in scoring position. Wouldn’t this be something? They have fought tooth and nail all season long. Do they have a little bit more magic in them here tonight? You know, a base hit will score Hill. Well, I don’t care who you have in the outfield. He’s one of the fastest men in [Applause] baseball. First pitch is low ball one with Sanchez on deck. Now, let me ask you this. Would you prefer to almost pitch to a guy like Sanchez who’s got a lot more swing and miss in his bat than you would Senoha? Oh, no. Okay. You want if you’re Craig Counsel, you want Valencia to go right after Senoha and not have to worry about Sanchez. But he’s fallen behind 2 and 0. [Music] So is in the driver’s seat with the tying man at second and the 200. Missed outside. Ball three and a little bit low by a whisker. Maybe [Music] not. Three and0 the count. Watching all the way. There’s ball four. And immediately Javier Sonoha points at Jesus Sanchez and tells him, “Let’s go.” Here comes Tommy Hod to talk it over. Sanchez is two for four tonight with a leadoff homer in the first, the first of his career. An RBI single, a stolen base, and a run scored in the fifth. Here’s the homer. and he got the fast ball from Ben Brown. Didn’t waste any time with the home run. A chance to tie it or win it for Jesus Sanchez. Jesus’s home run in that first inning. 409 ft. 112 exit. VO. He’s got three career walk-off hits if he could find a way to score from first. The outfield they take a few steps back. They want to try to cut a ball off in the gap. So they play deep. First pitch, laid off a fast ball and they do that, the outfield does to to try to prevent a ball getting through to the gap to keep the runner at first from scoring. He’s never hit a walk-off homer. Had a walk-off homer swing right there. Now, by the way, this has been a good game. Yes, it has. There’s been a lot of ups and downs. Good good big league ball game. Yeah, lead changes, some long balls. 61 career homers. 53 against righties. 011. It’s Whoa. Imagine if the kid on deck gets a chance. Vo, we know he can hit a fast ball. Let’s see if we can get there. What a game though. You’re right. Infield is back. They play him to pull. First and second, two outs. The two-1 pitch. That is life over the bag at first. Rolling down the right field line. This is going to tie it. It might win it. The Marlins walk off the curve. I told you it’s been an exciting game and even a more exciting finish. [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] What a night for Jesus Sanchez. Four RBI’s. Here comes that tripledigit fast ball. His hands are right there. He’s ready for it and smokes it past Michael Bush, the first baseman. Once it got into that right field corner, all I was doing was watching Senoha run. You knew one run would score. And here comes Senoa waved home by Blake Lai. And just like that, another walk-off. Got rid of his lid. It’sa halfway down the third baseline. All right.
The Miami Marlins get the win over the Chicago Cubs in the ninth inning in walk-off fashion!
