8 MORE Dallas Cowboys OTAs Takeaways Ft. Joe Milton, Tyler Booker, Kaiir Elam & Juanyeh Thomas

[Music] Good morning. Welcome back into the Cowboys Report. I am Tom Downey. As promised, some more OTAA news notes, takeaways from the first open practice. Eight topics slash players. There’s actually more players discussed uh than the topics, but you get the point. We’ll break those down on today’s show. If you want even more Cowboys OTAA coverage, help us out by sharing today’s video. Free, simple, easy to do social media. Share today’s video, please and thank you. Let’s begin with the latest on Tyler Booker. I think a good thing here, by the way, for the Dallas Cowboys. He is going to be the right guard. This no more nonsense about the Cowboys like I gotta earn your star type of deal. and you start with the twos. Even though we all know you’re going to be the starter, he got to work with the ones at right guard on Tuesday. And I view this as an absolute win. I don’t see any real tangible benefits to making him earn it when you know in two weeks, two months, he’s going to be the right guard starter. Just get him going now. Get that chemistry, everything else locked in and loaded. Next up, a new addition, or at least I should say another new addition. Kaire Elum by all accounts uh had a pretty strong showing at the first Open Media OTAA practice. Multiple pass breakups, didn’t allow any catches downfield. Some short stuff. That’s not necessarily a bad thing or a concerning thing maybe is a better way to describe it there. Got plenty of work with the the ones as well. The hope here and the goal, make no mistake about it, is that the change of scenery will benefit Kaire. That the schematic stuff will be better in Buffalo. that he’ll be a better fit than what he was with the Bills. And with no Trayvon Diggs, with no Savone Revel to start this open OTAA period, Elum got a ton of work with the ones and he’s in line to as it sits now. This could very well change come training camp, week 1, week seven. He has a chance to be a starter and the Cowboys traded for him to give them some insurance. They need somebody whether it’s Elon, Michael Carson, unknown guy to emerge as a startable player. Even as the start of your game, you need to have somebody to help out, especially on the outside as you wait for at least Diggs, maybe Rebel to get healthy. So, will Kier Elum start in week one? This is the pin comment on today’s show. So, go vote there. Y for yes, N for no. Let’s stick in the secondary and discuss the nickel corner work that was going on. Two notable players. Shouts out uh Nick Harris for some good insight on this. Got not all but a good portion of the nickel corner work knowing the Cowboys are doing a lot of uh you know seven on seven and some third down stuff. Don Bland and Israel Muamu, which if you hadn’t picked the top two guys going into that, those probably would have been your top two guesses. Uh Bland has played Nickel before. you know, he kind of made the comment that he’s he’s on board with it, although I think he’d rather play on the outside. Bland is like, I think your both best case and worst case scenario. The best case is like some combination of Diggs, Elum, Revel play great, and you want to get those two on the field. You’re playing your best three and therefore Bland goes on the inside since Diggs, uh, Revel, and Elum are not are not inside corners. And he’s also the worst case scenario, especially early on where no one else steps up and can handle that duty. Israel Muamu has a chance to be this year’s version of Rico Dattle if he can earn it. It’s certainly not going to be given to him, but he has the opportunity to showcase what he’s able to do. When he’s been on the field, good stuff tends to happen. You know, he always seems to be able to make plays at the right time. So, I think Israel Muamu and Don Bland are your top two options at the nickel corner spot. However, they were not actually the only two players getting work in that regard. We’ll come back to that here with one maybe surprise option, although maybe not to read too much into it either. But first, today’s show is made possible by Prize Picks. It is the best place. Turn your sports knowledge into cash. Let’s go to Wany Thomas who got some safety work and also got some nickel corner reps. I do wonder if that’s just a little bit of like he shifted down inside because they were doing you know cover one looks or single high looks and the safety goes down in the box there. Remember Donovan Wilson not a participant. Maris Bell still recovering from his shoulder surgery as well. So Wany Thomas kind of the first man in line then at at safety if he can be a a contributable piece not just on special teams but maybe doing some safety nickel corner hybrid stuff that does intrigue me. Didn’t play a lot last year in coverage. Both Maris Bell and and Wany Thomas have fallen in the boy I sure would like to see more of them category. They haven’t ever really fully gotten that opportunity and injuries were a factor, but I thought it was a missed opportunity late last season to not play them more. Thomas is a core special teamer. He’s not built like your normal nickel. Then again, neither is Israel Muamu. He’s built like a safety. So, I I wouldn’t I would not peg him as a top nickel corner candidate. At least not right now. See how things play out. But he got some reps in that spot. And even that safety overhang, strong safety box roll. I do think that type of nickel corner is important. And I do wonder if that could be a good fit in like run fits. You when you want to do big nickel, you got to put him somewhere in there. Maybe Thomas could be that player for you. So, who gets some more nickel reps come early season? DB for Don Bland, JT for Wan Thomas, IM for Israel Muamu. Let’s go to Joe Milton as the uh the Joe Milton experience by all accounts seems to be underway. Uh again, shout out Nick Harish for some good notes on this and others mentioned this too like like Tommy Yarsh over at cowboys.com. Uh inconsistent up and down day overall. Uh inconsistent with his accuracy. That’s Joe Milton. Physical traits. Flash could run, throw the ball, throws the ball a country mile quite literally has physical traits. That’s Joe Milton. Threw two picks. uh back-to-back plays actually. Buddy Johnson off a tip and then Shamar James just kind of undercut him and picked it off and all in the short intermediate range. By the way, this is just what you’re going to get out of Joe Milton. I don’t even view this as a bad thing right now. You traded a late what amounts to a late day three pick for a physically talented raw developmental QB. He’s going to look like a raw developmental QB. I will give Brian Shottenheimer some love and for what he said on Joe Milson and again this is a bit of coach speak but is worth mentioning from the time he’s been here the work ethic is incredible he’s one of the first people in the building he’s one of the last to leave the way he’s attacked the playbook and picked it up has been incredible the talent speaks for itself he’s an exciting young prospect I think the sky is the limit for you know Dak Prescott as per Shotti has done a good job taking on a a mentorship role for Milton which if you know Dak isn’t a surprise guys at all really would be expected frankly. The size is great. The physical tools are great. The down in down out consistency is by no means there. I know he played great in the regular season finale. The preeason was actually like outright bad for Joe Milton. This is the experience. It actually should be fun in the preseason. Like it actually does give us something exciting to watch and not just, you know, a bunch of Cooper Rush reps. And he’ll play a lot and kind of like the trailer experience last year. There will be some awesome and there might be some bad, too. As long as the awesome kind of outweighs the bad, that that’s the goal you want to see. So, be honest. Setting the expectations of backup preseason stuff. What is your excitement level over Joe Milton? Scale it for me from one to 10. Let’s talk two notable players who younger guys, you know, fighting for roster spot guys at Flash. First up is Jaylen Craropper. We’ve done this before, right? you know, every preeason, OTAAS, mini camp, training camp. Ah, look, Jaylen Craropper is making plays again. I think there’s a almost impossible path for Craropper to make the 53man roster right now, but there could be another practice squad spot for him. Or maybe he looks so good the Cowboys have to make a tough decision somewhere else. Still early though. Next up is Brevin Span forward, who I think is in line to be at least tight and three for this team. Uh again, shouts out to Nick Harris said he was unstoppable today. Multiple receptions getting open downfield, built like a tackle. If Spanford can add more than just kind of check down stuff and he had one catch I think was beyond 15 yards last year. If he can add more than that, that’s a really intriguing piece at tight end. Excuse me. We will have more Cowboys offseason news and rumors for you. Updates, OTAAS, everything else in between. We’ll have some NFL news with the tush push ban potentially coming today. Hit that sub button, youtube.com/cowboys TV. Finally, I want to discuss the running backs briefly. Javvante Williams got the first first team reps. There was a rotation though and everyone was in shorts. And I basically want to just like recap what Brian Shottenheimr said in his press conference. The too long didn’t listen was like don’t worry about it. It’s May. I I think he’s spot on when he says, you know, you don’t really glean that much from running backs until the pads come on. For the running back side of things, we can try to glean like who got work with the ones, but Shotti said it’s going to be a rotation, so don’t read too much into that either. Almost like check in again in July. Like that’s kind of where you’re at. Like you’re gonna like Jaden Blue’s speed will be obvious, but like doesn’t matter until the pads come on. It’s a physical position. So yeah, I I I kind of agree with Shotti. You know, I’ll make note of it where relevance, but as it relates to the backfield battle, you’re not going to learn anything that matters for, you know, two plus months. [Music]

Cowboys OTA news focuses plenty on the cornerbacks. With no Trevon Diggs or Shavon Revel, Kaiir Elam had a strong showing: multiple PBUs, no downfield catches & worked with 1s. Meanwhile at nickel corner, DaRon Bland and Israel Mukuamu were among the players to get work. Juanyeh Thomas, benefitting from no Donovan Wilson and Markquese Bell, was the #2 safety and even got some nickel corner reps.

The Joe Milton experience was on full-display in his first reps with the Cowboys. He flashed his physical tools, like his ability to run, but also struggled with accuracy and threw two picks (Buddy Johnson and Shemar James). This is what you’ll get from him. Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer did offer praise for Milton: “From the time he’s been here, the work ethic is incredible,” Schottenheimer said. “He’s one of the first people in the building, he’s one of the last to leave. The way he’s attacked the playbook and picked it up has been incredible. The talent speaks for itself. He’s just an exciting young prospect that I think the sky’s the limit for.”

Cowboys rumors have long circled the RB spot, but there’s not much to gather here. Javonte Williams started with the 1’s, but there was a rotation and everyone is in shorts. Brian Schottenheimer essentially said don’t worry about running backs until pads come on.

  1. My excitement level over Joe Milton is a two and a 2% half to 3 that is all .I can give him now until I see him play his first football game on the field in the preseason and also in the regular season game.

  2. But what. I didn't can you talk about was the undrafted big body wide receiver from the college Oregon Ducks Traeshon Holden because. I did not hear nothing about him playing an OTAs practice and. I don't even know if he have a jersey number yet because that is how. I want to hear what's going on with him because. I like the way he plays because he reminds me of two people and. I don't know how many times I said this to people but he reminds me of Hall of Famer Terrell Owens and soon to be Hall of Famer one day Dez Bryant because how the way he plays the game because he plays it aggressively he don't slack down on a play in the game he likes to be challenged .I like those type of players.

  3. The 2 biggest weakness on the team is mazi Smith and Tyler guyton. If both of them do not improve a lot Cowboys will be in trouble this season. My opinion is mazi and guyton will both be 1st round busts and Dallas will have to draft OT and NT in 2026 draft. Not good when you whiff on 2 back to back 1st round picks.
