🔴LIVE🔴Arizona Diamondbacks vs St Louis Cardinals/May 23/ Mlb Envivo/ MLB The show 25

That’ll be the show with a good one coming at you. It’s the Arizona Diamondbacks taking on the St. Louis Cardinals. And now, first pitch coming your way next, St. Louis Cardinals. Just about to get started on the mound for this one. Steven Matz having a pretty ridiculous season so far, Singy. Yeah, you see there with the sub two erra, very dependable guy and he’s been pretty much lights out so far this season. So, you know, when a guy like this takes the mound, Boog, I I’m expecting to watch him get into a rhythm quickly and just move through a ball game. Sometimes you can see some big strikeouts. Other times it’s hard to even know he’s there because the innings go so quickly. The 1-1 is fouled off. swings and miss has struck him out. And Chris, that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base. And the defense breathes a sigh of relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play. But that’s how you do it. Keep him off balance. Get him out of there and deal with the next guy. Catel Marte up to the plate. And that one is downstairs. And that’s ball one. One down. Base is empty. Now one and one. One and one. And that’s downed away. One out. Base is empty. On the ground to the left, Aronado to first in time. Quick start here this evening. Two out. Top of the first. Time to take a look at the Diamondbacks lineup. Not a whole lot going their way offensively the last few games, Chris. Yeah, Booan. That can put more pressure on the pitching staff to try to limit the opponent to just one or two runs a game knowing that their offense is not scoring right now. And that never really works well because you try to be too fine and you end up giving up a lot of runs. So, we’ll see if everybody can just relax, bring things together and perform at a level that they’re capable of. Ground ball left side and it stays fair around first heading for two. throws to second and he’s out. Cut down and that ends the inning. No score as we head to the bottom of the first. And we’re back getting the nod on the mound. Corbin Burns. Chris, how about a scouting report? Well, this guy’s just been filthy out there on the mound. Hitters, batting under 200 against him, and they’re just having a hard time squaring up anything, doing any type of damage. The only way he hurts himself is if he gives up the free passes and surreners a rare home run. But outside of that, it’s going to be a tough job for the opposing lineup today. And that is out of play. This is the zone and the count is one and two. This guy at the dish excels in two strike counts. Got to be careful with him out there on the mound. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Yeah, that’s pretty sick late cutting action to get the swing and miss right there. I mean, that’s just really hard to account for as a hitter when you’re seeing the fast all the way and then just at the last moment it darts away from you and you can’t reach it. Brendan Donovan next up for the Cardinals. Brendan, that one missing inside. Well, Boo, we got Burns working on the mound in this one, and he’s a guy that rose through the minors rather quickly. Drafted back in 2016, and he made his major league debut just two seasons later. That’s a fast climb, and he’s been able to conquer lots of challenges thrown his way. Just missed. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. And that one fouled off. Goals. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. And that one missing low. Eighth pitch of the at bat coming up. The 3-2 is outside and it’s ball four. It wasn’t easy, but he earned that walk after a long at bat. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk. Very gritty. Here’s Contrarus now. And that’s through there for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. Let’s go now. And a base hit. They get it in quickly. So, first and second now, one out. Recognized the break on that pitch early and that allowed him to keep his front shoulder in. You know, it’s easy to bail on those front door breaking balls, but a great job right there of letting it travel, then unloading. A nice balanced swing. First and second, one out. And now it’s Ivon Herrera. That’s in there. That’s strike one. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. Donovan at second. Contrarus over at first with one away. The one is outside and it’s a ball and a strike. Had a breaking ball misses outside. Tough spot right here. Couple runners on. Two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. comes up empty. That’s strike two. Runners at first and second with one gone. Got him looking. That’s a strikeout. Well, you got to be ready to swing the bat with a runner in scoring position in two strikes. Just put the ball in place somewhere and you got a chance. Very frustrating for him, I’m sure. See if the next guy can pick him up. Now up for St. Louis, Alec Burlson. Pitches in there and one. Well, they’re really running up the pitch count in this first inning. Lots of confidence from this team that is perhaps the hottest in baseball right now. St. Louis and fouled off. Two on, two outs. Swing and a chopper, but a kicks foul. Come on. Checks his swing. Now it’ll appeal to third. No swing. Just held it back there. Hard ground ball for a base stop. Headed for the plate. He will score and they take the lead. It’s an RBI single. One- nothing. A perfect example right there. That plate discipline. It pays off. The deeper he gets into account, the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle. First and second, two outs. Here’s Nolan Aronado fouled off left side. Let’s go. Check. Swing. Went around. Aronado in an 02 hole. two strikes. Laboring here about to throw his 30th pitch of the inning in the dirt to third. Tag got him. Bang bang play and the inning is over. But the RBI single pushes across a run. It’s now a one- nothing ball game. Major League Baseball is on the show. Second inning, set to go. Now, here’s the cleanup hitter for Arizona, Josh Naylor. Taking high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point, that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Matts back to work. Ball one and a pitch inside. Naylor in his sixth season batting in the cleanup spot and he was born in Canada. Next offering in there for a strike and a count even one and one. Swing and a miss and he got him to chase. Good pitch right there. Tied him up on the hands. If I’m out there on the bump, I’m going right back in there. missed with a change up and that’s ball two. Recognized that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. Struck him out swinging. Had him out front for strike three. Chris, as we look back at the pitch sequence, he hadn’t seen that curveball at all. How tough is it to adjust to something like that with a bunch of break when you haven’t had a look at it yet? Yeah, I mean, you’re dialed up for something firm. You never want to take a called third strike as a fast ball. So, you’re going to be a little anxious before you recognize the pitch. And right there, clearly didn’t see what was coming. Au Heno Suarez up to the plate now. Bats in there. It’s 0 and one. One down, base is empty. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. Next pitch is downstairs. Definitely a swing and miss slider down and in. He finished that really well. Just couldn’t get him to offer at it. That one misses. Three and two now. That’s a good at bat right there. He was down early in that plate appearance. Works the walk. I don’t think he really wanted to pitch to him right there anyhow. One down. Now it’s the right fielder Pen Smith. Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. Little chopper rolls foul. Tying run is at first here in the top of the second. And it’s fouled off. He’ll do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Struck him out looking. So, two down now. And here is Heraldo Peromo. That’s inside. That’s a strike. And it’s one and one. Suarez the runner at first with two gone. Next offering is fouled back. Two outs. That misses the countdown. Two and two. Really good take especially with two strikes. Goes down looking. One left for Arizona and it remains one- nothing. Back in St. Louis as the Cardinals come up to hit here in the last of the second. We head to the bottom of the second. So now it’s Dolan Aronado. Come on. Close but called a ball. Ball one. line drive Pauls it in and there’s one away. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting the line drive that finds a glove. But you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. Here’s Nolan Gorman. He swings and misses at the first pitch. And one Burns, not a big strikeout guy, but still very effective as far as starting pitchers go. one of those guys that involves the defense and really gets him involved in the action. Lifted in the air down the left side and that’ll fall for a base hit. So, a man aboard now with one away. And with that kind of power at the plate, they’ll gladly take the single to the opposite field. He moves the ball around all the quadrants of the strike zone and will add and subtract velocity. And because of that, he gets the weak contact. It’s all about missing the barrel of the bat. It seems like this type of guy is kind of a dying breed nowadays. Well, exactly. When teams are looking for high velocity, high strikeout rates, guy like this doesn’t necessarily do that. So, in order to really appreciate how good he is, you have to see him because if you’re just looking at a Now, this one stroke to right center and that should be extra bases. Brown’s third headed for the plate. He’ll score. relay throw to third. He’s in there. Went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. Just a really nice approach to shoot that line drive to the opposite field. There’s a lot of hard work and discipline that goes into getting a result like that at the plate. Doesn’t come naturally for most hitters. One down, runner at third. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Victor Scott. Swing and a tapper that rolls foul in the dirt. Nice job behind the play. Swing and a ball popped up. Purdomo makes the catch and there’s two away. Now batting short stop Mason Win. And the batter will be the shortstop. Mason Win struck out swinging his first time. And there’s the strike. Well, I know they’ve gotten out to an early lead, but you don’t want to take these opportunities for granted with two outs. Still lock in with a quality at bat. drive in that run. You may not have another runner in scoring position the rest of this ball game. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the walls. Going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. This one in the dirt and well done to keep it close. Two outs with a runner at third. just misses with that one. Swing and a ball lifted left field and that ends the inning. Redbirds with the runscoring triple and it’s two zip. Back after this on the show. Back here in St. Louis, Alec Thomas now hitter Thomas. And that’s downstairs and outside. That one fouled off. The 1-1 is fouled off. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow left field and it falls. So a man on base to start the inning. still able to come through behind in the count right there. Pitch was in and off the plate. So hard to do anything with a pitch in that location, but somehow he got the barrel to it and hit it well. Pretty amazing. And now the center fielder. And that is downstairs. And that is ball one. Thomas aboard here at first with nobody out. And another ball. That one inside. Look out. And ball four to a board. That just came apart right there. Four pitch walk and guy at the plate was not going to help him out by swinging it something out of the zone. Back to the top of the lineup. This is Corbin Carroll. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. just missed. First and second, no outs. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. Into the outfield. Base hit. They won’t test it here. Base is loaded. No outs. Love how he let that ball travel. Trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. Here’s Catel Marte. Golden opportunity right here. And the first pitch misses for ball one. hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. They need a strike out and you need a ball perhaps on the ground for a double play or get yourself a popup something. But you got to make some pitches. But if he can battle and get through this, he can earn some points. All loaded up. Dangerous hitter at the plate in the air right field. Makes the grab. Runners tagging from second and third. He’ll score on the sack fly. And a 2-1 ball game now. Oh, right there. He’s definitely looking for more than just a sack fly with the bases loaded and nobody out. but she’ll take it. Now it’s up to the guys coming up behind him to pick up the rest of those runners on base. Now the Dback’s catcher, Gabrielle Moreno. First pitch misses. He’s looking for a ground ball to get a double play and out of this jam. First and third, one down. Glove side, but it gets through. The tying run is in to score from third. Throw comes into third and they’re at the corners with only one out. Big RBI for him right there. Just a simple ground ball the other way that had eyes on it, man. Sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel, put the ball in play, and just hope it finds a hole. And now it’s Josh Naylor struck out swinging his first time. Ground ball could be two. Fired to second and that’s two. They get two and draw even again. We head now to the home half of inning number three. We are tied 2-2. Bottom of the inning now up for St. Louis. Brendan Donovan Brendan Donovan at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. You know, these cards showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. They’re doing a good job of working the pitch count and they’ve been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well. Carol makes the catch and there’s one gone. Still relatively early, but with a pair of runs already on the board, the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set him up to do more damage later in this game. Contrarus batting for the second time. And that’s strike one. Tied up here in the early going. And that’s downstairs. And that’s ball one. And there’s a ball. swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Moreno makes the grab and there’s two gone. Go Chris through the early stages. He hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. Here’s the catcher, Ivon Herrera. He was a strikeout victim his first time. Check swing on the first pitch. Appeal down to first and he went says Larry Bullard. Two outs. Base is empty. Cardinal way high. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now. Doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens. Cardinal and a base hit up the middle. So a two out knock keeps the inning alive. Now batting first base Alan. And up next for St. Louis, Alec Burlson singled and drove in a run his first time through in there for strike one. Two gone, but the go-ahead run is at first here in the last half of the third. Not even close there. One ball, one strike. Two outs and downstairs. Swing and that ball smashed on a line and the inning is over. So, one left for the Cardinals and this game is still tied at two and two. Back here in St. Louis, Auio Suarez up to hit now. Auheno Suarez. That one ripped way back there. Leaping and it’s gone. Home run number 15 on the year. It’s 3-2. He only needed one swing to square it up. Not wasting any time in that at bat. Boo. aggressive and it paid off. Such an incredible swing right there on that breaking ball away. Did an incredible job of keeping the hands back, letting it travel, and boy, he just hammered that. Recognized the break, and man, this guy kept his front foot down. Weight didn’t transfer until the exact time. An excellent backspin to carry it over the fence. Now at the plate, Paven Smith. Well, these Diamondbacks doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. It’s not just the three runs they’ve already scored. On top of that, they forced this starter to throw more pitches than he wanted to at this point of the game. On the ground, Aronado to first in time. That’s the first out in the top of the fourth. And that pitch count is impactful because if they can keep making him work hard out there, it may force the bullpen to get involved a little sooner rather than later. Heraldo Purdomo stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Caught looking his first time up. Lie drive. Base hit right center field. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. Took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. Now a chance for Alec Thomas. That one missed. Movement in the bullpen. Sunny Gray up and throwing. Palante also getting ready. The 1-1. This one chopped on the ground but foul. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Bows it back with two strikes. Man at first. One away. Strike him out. Chopped out in front of the plate. To first and he beats it. Everyone’s safe. Well, from the time you’re a little leager, you’re taught to hustle out of the box and give it a full sprint through the base regardless of how you hit it. And he didn’t make great contact, but the effort was there. And he earns the base hit. Here comes the skipper out of the dugout. and he’s ready to make the move. Steven Matz will depart and a decent effort considering he’s normally reliever. Back with the new pitcher in a minute. Now pitching. So they turn to the veteran pitcher in this spot, Sunny Gray. Well, he’s been hit pretty hard at times this season as you see with the big erra. So this is an important outing for him to get on the right track. Here’s the center fielder. Fought off foul. Got the dish looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning ending double play. Boo. Two on, one out. That one lifted to left. Donovan under it pulls it down and he makes the catch. Two down. Up next for the Diamondbacks, left fielder Corbin Carroll. Corbin Carroll digs in now. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season, so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. in there at the knees. Strike one and ball one. Just missed. It’s a big opportunity right here. But I love the way he’s slowing the game down. He’s shrinking his zone, making sure he gets the pitch that he wants to hit. That’s a ball. Tried to attack with a sweeper. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. Popped in the air left side. Aronado moving under this one and makes the grab and that’ll do it. Daxs get one on the solo jack. It’s now a 32 ball game. Ready to go for the last half of the inning. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Nolan Aronado. That catches the zone for a strike. Go and one. That’s hard hit in the line. He’s got it. And there’s one away. That was just a great jump and route to the ball. Well, it had to be. If he was going to cover all that ground and bring in that sinking liner, that’s the way it had to be done. Nice job. Now, it’s the second baseman, Nolan Gorman. Singled and scored his first time. Swing and a miss. Wow. That’s 89 on the gun and it’s a change up. It’s like good hitting if you’re looking for it, but because of the speed differential between the fast ball and that pitch, really hard for a hitter to get on time with it. Swanging a miss. That’s strike two. You tie a guy up like that, you’re feeling like you are in command. Home team down a run. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth and a foul ball. He stays alive. Swings and misses. And he’s registered. Three Ks in this one. Good late cut for the strike out there. That thing really got in on him. And you know, the cutter isn’t really a huge swinging miss pitch most of the time because it’s not really meant to move a whole lot. You’re just trying to miss the big part of the barrel and maybe get some weak contact. But that one right there did a whole lot more than that. That was a really good pitch. Walker at the plate now. That’s ball one. And a strike. Next offering is fouled back. And a one-two swing and a ground ball base hit right field and that keeps the inning going. Now batting center fielder Victor. So up next, Victor Scott 0 for one with a fly out. That one in 95 missed up top and it’s one and0. Walker off of first with two away. You can do it. You can do it. Swing in a ball line to center. Diving it gets down. Could be extra bases coming home. He scores to tie it up. He’s not stopping. On his way home and he’s out. Cut down and that ends the inning. So they get one run, two hits, no errors, and no one left. We’re headed to the fifth. All tied up at three a piece. And welcome back to the ballpark. Top five, John Shabi with Chris Singleton. And leading it off, Catel Marte, Gray back to work. Top of the zone and it’s called a strike. Marte goes 6’1, 210 lbs. And he was born in the Dominican Republic. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. So a runner aboard to start the inning. All over that one right there. There’s nothing cheap about the way he got that one through the infield. That was ripped. Caught out in front and didn’t get under it like he would have liked, but definitely put a good swing on it. And now the catcher comes up to him. Gabrielle Moreno. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Rudder at first with no outs here. Inside and the count now two and nothing. Really been able to slow down the game tonight with his at bats and the biggest one he’s had so far. He doesn’t look anxious at all. Inside just missed. Josh Naylor in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Nobody out. Runner at first. Calling this count. Runner not known for his speed, but I think you got to put him in motion. Try to avoid a double play here. Boo. That one ripped but fouled with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Battling here as he fouls it away. All tied up. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Swing and a miss. He struck him out. Went back to the fast ball and it was effective. Here’s Josh Naylor both for two in this one. That’s in there. Strike one. And that gets the inside corner for a strike. Naylor tries to check his swing. Now a look to third. And yes, he did. That’s a swing according to Gary Simmons. Well, interesting. He’s looking very comfortable out of the stretch after giving up the leadoff single. Backto back strikeouts. So, they haven’t been able to move that runner up, get him into scoring position and try to have a better chance of scoring. I tell you, good job so far on the mound. He just needs one more out. Suarez up for the third time here. Watches that one miss. That missed by a lot. Two and one. Come on, Cardinals. Just missed. Pave Smith in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Check swing called strike. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion. So something in the gap should definitely score it out towards right center. That’s well struck. Scott going back. Makes the catch on the edge of the track. One left for the Diamondbacks. Still tied three and three. Back here at Bush Stadium, we head to the bottom of the fifth. Now it’s the shortstop. Mason Win. The shorts stop takes a ball. Activity in the bullpen. Ryan Thompson getting ready to go. Number 80 also throwing and another ball. Next offering is in for a strike. Nasty two slider there for a strike. That tells you he’s got a lot of confidence in that pitch. Fouled off. He was late. And that one upstairs. and a swing and a miss. He’s notched four strikeouts now. He had him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this, known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. Now, the left fielder, Brendan Donovan. He’s 0 for one. Let’s do it. Chopper to second. Marte and that quickly. Two away. Now batting the designated hitter, Wilson Contrus. Here comes Wilson Contrus. One for two. Splits the plate. And that’s strike one. Two down, nobody on. Last half of inning number five. Hit on the ground up the middle. That’s a base hit. Up next for the Cardinals, catcher. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Ivon Herrera. Let’s go Cardinals. And there’s a ball. Contrarus off of first with Jul. That’s a little bit low. Chopped to third and that one handled. They take the force out. That’s the inning. So, no runs here on a base hit. No errors and one left. We’re through five. All tied up at three apiece. And we’re back. Top six. Now here is Pen Smith for the Diamondbacks. Right fielder Paven Smith. Pitch misses inside. One and0. Movement in the bullpen for the Cardinals. Phil Mod preparing to come on if needed. Romero warming up as well. And that’s in there for a strike. And now it’s even. Swings through that one for strike two. way high. Two and two. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. Got him. That K is his third of the game. Heraldo Purdomo stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Late swing, fouled to the left. One down, base is empty. And that’s fouled off. Next offering upstairs. That’s a really good job of laying off the O2 high fast ball is going to make that pitcher really have to respect this hitter even though he’s behind in the count. And that one ripped to left and that’s a fair ball. Now he’ll turn for second and he’s into second base with one away as the go ahead run. Couple of hits in a row for him here. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages working on going to the opposite field and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did and he did it perfectly. A chance now to take the lead and at this point in the game that could be a deciding run. Stepping in, Alec Thomas outside low and that’s ball one. St. Louis man at second. And that one fouled off. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. That’s out to center field. Scott under it. He’s got it. That’s out number two. Now that is number 13. So the go-ahead run in scoring position and now the center fielder. Fouled off down the right side. Go ahead run at second and we’re the top half of the sixth. Strike two. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up in the dirt. One and two to count. Next offering misses down and away. They tried to get him to go chase the pitch down and away, but he wouldn’t bite. 3-2 now. Man on second, two down. Swing and a miss. And that is that. Well, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. Back now for the bottom of the sixth. And there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Ryan Thompson. And he’s had a struggle so far this year. As you can see, the inflated RA looking to bring that down a little bit right here. And now the first baseman, Alec Burlson. First, Burlington. Cardinal. Goals. Go. That one’s in there. And that is strike one. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Scott McGuff up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. Beaks a left-hander also throwing. Come on, St. Louis. Check swing and he went and it’s 0 and two. Let’s go. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Come on. The O2 outside. That’s a ball. And a swing and a miss. And that’s the first out. That was a really nice pitch call for that putaway slider right there. You look at the sequence in that at bat and he hadn’t thrown it yet. So, just makes it really tough to recognize and fight off with two strikes. I’m sure it looked like a fast ball all the way until it wasn’t. Here’s Nolan Aronado. Just missed. The 10 base is empty. One away here in the bottom of the sixth. Let’s go. Pitch misses. Three balls, no strikes. And there’s the automatic. Next offering is in for a strike. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Very strong coming out of the pin so far as he punches out the first two batters he’s faced in this one. Getting straight to work. Man, it’s talked about a lot, but relievers are just so electric these days. These aren’t fun at bats if you’re a hitter. I’m so glad I’m retired. Here’s the second base, Nolan Gorman. Down and away for ball one. Drilled out towards left center field. That’s back there. into the bullpen and gone. So he goes the opposite way with that one. His second of the year. It’s 43. It’s like he’s playing whiffle ball up there. And that’s typically not the easiest way to hit a home run to the slight opposite field into the gap. Man, making it look easy, that’s for sure. Two outs, nobody on. Jordan Walker, the next to hit. That misses the zone. Ball one. That one at the knees for a strike. St. Louis. That’s down and in. And the two-1 hammered but foul. back to the mound. It hit him. Still able to get it there in time. And they do get the third out. The inning is over. One for the Cardinals on the solo home run. It’s now a 43 ball game. You’re dialed into the show. Now, welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Jojo Romero. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Corbin Carroll stands in now for the Diamondbacks. one for three. It’s good speed at the top of the order here. You want to get it on, see if you can get a stolen base, maybe get around the bases and pick up a run. Looking to get the tying run on base. Foul ball still 0 and two and that’s in the dirt. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. swing and a miss. Struck him out. Couldn’t catch up to the heater. A big first out here in the seventh via the punch out. Yeah, it just does so much to change the outlook of an important inning like this when you got the leadoff hitter so critical in setting the table when you got a tight game like this. So, a strikeout really puts them on their heels. Next up for the Diamondbacks, Catel Marte. right through there for a strike. Holding on to a one-run lead here in the top half of inning number seven. Misses inside and the count is one and one. on the ground out to short. Zips it to first. They get the out on Marte. Oh, we talk about how the ball is coming out of a pitcher’s hand. The way it comes out of his hand as an infielder. Wow. Really impressive. And now Gabrielle Moreno. swaying in a ball hammered left field. A dive and he can’t haul it in. Makes the turn and heads for second. And the double puts the tying run in scoring position with two away. Well, just a total nightmare for lefties. I’d be very surprised to see that matchup again. This was a really nice swing. didn’t quite get enough behind it to get it out of here, but once it got over his head in left field, it was extra bases all the way. Now, we’ll see if they can pick up that tying run and start us over here in the late innings. So, the tying run in scoring position now. Josh Naylor stands in now for the Diamondbacks. So the tying run at second on the ground right side. He gets to it with a slide. Got him. Nice play. And that may have saved a run. One left for Arizona. Still down a run. It’s 4-3. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Number 80. And this is the best way to make your major league debut. No one on base. Yeah, you’re already going to be a little nervous out there. So, I think it’s a nice job by the skipper to get him in here without any added pressure with traffic on the bases. Well, one-run game now up for St. Louis. Victor Scott. This guy can absolutely fly. I think one of the faster players in baseball. Yeah. St. Louis. swings and misses. That’s strike one. Chris, when you take in a stadium, I think one of the things that I always contemplate is where are you? And in St. Louis, Bush Stadium, you know exactly where you are with the arch in the background. They mow it into the lawn, the gateway arch basically goes from line to line and out towards center field and then the retired numbers, the championship banners. I mean, it really shows off the history of this proud franchise. Yeah, Boo. I mean, this city is always just covered in red, especially during the baseball season, but they’ve added that ballpark village out there in left center field. Very accessible to come into this city, stay downtown, get to the ballpark, and taking a game in a great setting. The one two and a sweeper misses for a ball. Still two and two after the foul ball. Cuts on it and misses. That’s a strike out. Blew the express right by his bat for strike three. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Mason win. way. Fast ball is outside. That one hit to right. Smith makes the grab for the second out. Now batting left fielder Brendan Donovan next up for the Cardinals. St. Louis. And the first offering is not close. Two down, nobody on here in the bottom of the seventh. and he grounds one back up the middle. Sneaks through base head. He was all over that one. Smashed that one through the infield for the knock. When it’s hit that hard, it makes it very tough on the infielders to make any sort of play. And up to hit is Wilson Contrus St. Louis. Right through there for a strike. two outs. Well struck left field. Carol ranges back and that one is out of here. Wilson Contrarus blasts one out and they throw a pair on the board. It’s 6-3. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. That’s exactly the pitch he was looking for. Crushes it and hits it out of the ballpark. Now the catcher up to hit Ivon Herrera. Fast ball for a strike. Rips that one to right. Smith makes the grab and that’s the inning. Two runs for St. Louis on this blast. It’s now 63. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Phil M and he’s got a big time breaking ball to contend with. Hitters going to have to pick it up early if they’re going to have any chance. Au Heno Suarez stands in now for the Diamondbacks. He’s already homerred in this game. First pitch just misses. Well, it’s critical right here that they bear down and turn in some quality at bats. Try to chip away at that lead because if it gets to the ninth, that closer’s coming in. Base hit. That was smoked through the infield. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. Everyone’s trying to elevate the ball in today’s game, but if you can hit a ball that hard on the ground, it’s going to find some holes. And now the right fielder, Pave Smith, 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. And a foul ball. Mton, a 6-2 righty, 205 lbs. He joined the team as a free agent. Foul ball there. Off the mark there at the count. One and two. in the dirt. Blocked. Suarez gets his lead at first. Nobody out. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. So digging in, Peralo Purdomo. swing and a ball ripped right field and that one back and that one is gone. That’ll fire up the dugout. His second homer of this series. It’s 65. Well, that swing changes things. Yes, it does. They were in striking distance and they found a way to fight back big time. There was a cutter away. Kind of works like a slider. You got to stay on it. Let it travel a little bit and then get your arms extended. Really good piece of hitting right there. So, next is the designated hitter for the Dbacks, Alec Thomas. And that’s off the outside edge. And that’s ball one. Trying to hold a one-run lead. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. Not close with that one. Two balls in a strike. And a big swing and a miss. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. Left field. Donovan on the move. He holds it in. Two away. Now batting number 13. Here’s the center fielder. Fast ball on the corner at the knees and it’s a strike. That’s off the inside corner. One and one. That one missed. Two balls, one strike. Hard ground ball base knock and that puts the tying run on base. I’m sure he feels really good about that one. Absolutely smoked that baseball. What a swing. Sent it out way faster than it came in. Of course, 113 off the bat. And no matter where you hit it at that speed, it’s tough to make a play on. manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Phil Mton gives way and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. So, the closer summon from the bullpen, Ryan Hley. Well, walks have been a big issue for him this year, so I expect these hitters to be patient up there. The number 56 Ryan. So up next, Corbin Carroll. That’s inside. And that is ball one. Well, in this situation, the hitter knows that he’s got to find a pitch that he can drive in order to drive in that tying run all the way from first base. So if he can’t do that, keep the line moving through a walk or just a base hit, but you got to stay within yourself. The one that one a triple digits. Typically the outfield defense will play a little bit deeper just to keep the ball in front, make sure that runner on first doesn’t come all the way around to score and tie this ball game up. swing and a miss. That one in the dirt that completes the strikeout. Inning over. Diamondbacks draw a bit closer thanks to this home run. It’s now 65. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Jaylen Beaks just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpin can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Well, one-run game. Alec Burlson now at the plate. And that’s in for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. Action in the pen down there. Scott McGuff up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. Ginkle a hard throwing right-hander up as well. But why the kick, the pitch, fouled off to the right. Pitches in the dirt. It’s a ball in two strikes. Just misses the mark outside the zone. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. Stays alive. Next pitch just misses and the count’s full. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. in the air out towards right center. Moving under it and out number one on the grab. Now batting third baseman Nolan Nado comes in to take his cuts. Swinging a foul out of play. Just missed. Next offering is downstairs. Base is empty, one away near the bottom half of the eighth inning. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. So, a man aboard, Nolan Gorman. Next up for the Cardinals. He’s already homered here in this one. And that’s outside. That’s off the mark. Ball two. Well, knowing that this hitter’s got holes in his swing because he’s got so much power, pitcher still can get a little too tight. Afraid to make a mistake. to 2-1. Swing and a miss. Aronado leads off first with one away. Dives, but it kicks off his glove. The throw is still in time. And now they have a base runner at second. Great job by the second base right there. Quick reaction to dive. Knock that ball down. And big leaguers just don’t panic. not the good ones. He gets up, makes the play, really good throw over to first base. That’s the kind of composure that you want to see from a guy in that position. And up next for St. Louis, Jordan Walker. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Man at second. Bounding ball here. Rolls. Foul. Ripped on the ground to second. Marte throws to first in time. That ends the frame. The Cards leave one. They lead it. However, it’s 6-5. All set for the start of the inning. And the batter now, Catel Marte. Marte. Yeah, the first offering a fast ball for a strike. Well, so many hard throwing relievers in the game these days. You would think that hitters have made the adjustment, but I don’t know if you ever get used to it. Just pumping gas out of the bullpen. So hard to play catchup. Next offering is down low. O2 fast way out of the zone. I think he’s trying to speed him up. Got to stay back. Off speed’s probably coming. That one outside. Two and two. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. And there’s a ball. Homeplayed umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. Gabrielle Moreno in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. And a swing and a miss. Feed him with a fast ball. Well, he didn’t get the call on the mound the pitch before. Felt like he should have had him looking, I think. But, you know, that’s good composure right there. He found a way to come back with another good pitch to get him to swing and miss. He’s two outs away. Next to hit for Arizona, Gabrielle Moreno. First offering misses badly for ball one. Crowd locked in right now. one-run game here in the ninth. Come on, let’s go. And that is out of play. One down. Base is empty and fouled off. spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another Got him looking. And Arizona with just one out left. Josh Naylor stands in now for the Diamondbacks. 0 for four. Two strikeouts and two ground outs. That one’s in there. That’s strike one. It’s a tough pitch, but in terms of the best pitch you’re going to get to hit in the at bat, that fast ball was down enough where you’re going to catch up to one. That’s the one. When she elevates, guys aren’t touched it. Helley is just one strike away and that skips in the dirt. Next pitch is inside. It’s two and two. Fouls that off to the left and will do it again. just missing there. And now three and two. Big pitch coming right here. Last thing he wants to do is put the tying run on base, but he can’t groove one either. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. on the ground and this should do it. Steps on the bag himself. Ball game. Well, Summon from the bullpen had to come in, get a big out, and then had a little time to think about it before he went back out to get the final three out of this ball game. Nonetheless, outstanding job to get the save and secure the win for his team. 65 the final here today. They hang on to win it by a run. For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show, I’m John Shami saying so long.
