Reviewing Oilers vs Stars Game One
Welcome back. All right, so last year, game one, Edmonton comes out, they assert themselves in Dallas. They won three to2. And Dallas has struggled in game ones. In fact, that’s that’s kind of understating things. It had been a while since Dallas had had anything near a good game in a game one. And for long stretches of this game, it looked like it was more of the same that we were seeing here. So, Skinner versus Auer. Uh the Stars going with 12 forwards and six defenseman rather than the 11 and seven that they’ve been using. Meaning Hasten and could take a regular shift. Uh Connor Brown playing for the Edmonton Oilers tonight. So mostly healthy lineups on both sides. There’s an early chance for Granland that’s held. The Oilers press. They’re kept to the outside. Dryle has a one time is kicked aside. Pucks cleared out. Things are then pushy on a hold by Skinner. So the physicality shows up a little bit early on. Uh the Stars press at two and a half minutes. Kane fires one high on a rush. McDavid goes beast mode, but he’s denied. McDavid had some really good chances in this game. Uh the shots on net are even. Three a piece through four and a half minutes of play. So, pretty good back and forth action at this point. Uh so, glove save on Johnston. Robertson has a shot that’s blocked. A steel would be denied from the doorstep as the Stars get some pressure. Uh Stars then draw a power play that leads to a short-handed fast break for Ryan Nan Hopkins. That saved. There’s another clear. And then there’s a short-handed two-on-one that ends that. So, not a great first power play for Dallas. Uh, and then Ranson and nearly scores after it ends, but nearly is not is not a goal, so it stays scoreless. The Oilers then get some pressure at the half and at 10:19, they open the scoring. Dry Cidle goes far far sideight on a net drive. Nurse McDavid with the assists. So, one- nothing for the Edmonton Oilers. The road team taking the crowd out of it a little bit early on. Uh, Steel then has a net feed that’s picked off. Good for checking by the Oilers leads to some pressure. There’s a crossbar for Heyman. Uh the Stars press with seven minutes left. Uh McDavid has a wraparound that saved as the Oilers get some pressure. Uh Stetcher was denied. Aer at that point minus a stick, but no harm, no foul there. The Stars were forced to ice it and honestly the Oilers are building some momentum until there’s a turnover and Tyler Sean goes gloves on a breakaway to tie the game at one at 1522. So that gets the crowd back into it and evens the score at one a piece. Wman then has a wrist that’s held. There’s some pushing there. Johnston has a slot chance that’s blocked. It’s 1-1 after the first period of play. So you go to the second period. McDavid’s end to end rush is kicked aside. The shots are two a piece at two and a half minutes. Uh comparatively speaking with some of the other games we’ve seen in the playoffs, lots of chances both ways in this which I felt like kind of favored the Oilers at points in this game. Uh that wide openen game I think is more of an Edmonton thing than a Dallas thing. So Buchard has the screenshot that misses wide. Dryidle has a rush chance that saved. The Stars press at 4 and a half minutes. They’re backto-back icings by the Oilers and then we get a power play for the Evston Oilers. There’s an early clear but uh the Oilers come back into the zone and at 608 Newton Hopkins picks a corner from the slot. So you can’t let him get those chances. He’s going to put him in as he does. The Oilers have the lead back at 2 to1. McDavid and Dryidle with the assists. Uh the Stars would look to respond. Kulak has a backhander that’s held. The shots 7 minutes in are 7 to2 in favor of the Oilers. The Oilers controlling this game until at 7:48. Bousard wires one uh far corner from the left circle. I thought that’s one should have had. So I thought that was a bit of an oof on his behalf. Uh so Bousard from Nent Hopkins and Dry Cidle. It’s three to one in favor of the Oilers. And Dallas is in some measure of trouble here, aren’t they? because we’ve still got 748 left in the second period. Uh and at this stage the Oilers are in full control of the game. Then there’s a post for Nurse as the Oilers are looking for another. So was that close to 4 to one. Sean has a rush chance that’s held. There’s a near miss for Dry Cidle in close. The Oilers go back to the power play. There’s an early clear. McDavid has a rush chance that’s held. There’s some pushing uh backto-back clears. Dallas does kill that off. So that could have made things worse as well. Well, there were a lot of opportunities in this second period for the Oilers to make things worse for Dallas. It just didn’t quite go in the net for him. Harley has a net drive that’s blocked. The Oilers press are kept to the outside. Marchman has a rush chance that’s held. Uh Yanmark has a net feed that’s picked off. And then with 102 left, Dallas draws a power play, but the Oilers prevent a setup. And when Dallas gets into the zone, the Oilers are blocking the path to the net. So, it’s three to one entering the third period. But the Oilers, it looks like, are in full control. They’ve outshot Dallas 22 to7. I thought they outchanced him. They’d outplayed him. But that power play rolls over into the third period. And 32 seconds in, Hastening gets his first goal of the playoffs. It’s a point shot pass to screen Granland and Marchment with the assists. And you could just feel that shift. You could feel that in that moment. Dallas gets a little bit of wind in their sails. And uh this is where things really change. The Oilers press to respond. The Stars go back to the power play. There’s an early clear. There’s a short-handed rush by Yanmark. And then at 3:49, Granland wires one from the right circle. He roofs it past a screen. Hasten and Sagen with the assist. So, while Dallas fans would start the mocking jeering of of Skinner, as is the tradition, I I didn’t think there was much that Skinner could do since he couldn’t see this one. He couldn’t see the one before that either. So, and then the the one before that is Sean on a breakaway. So yeah, at this point now it is a 3-3 tie. Uh that was two goals on three shots early in the third period for Dallas. Uh Granland to Harley near miss and then Dallas goes back to the power play. So the Oilers uh need to keep their sticks down. And I know there was some debate about this one, but you need to keep your sticks down in these situations. And I put here the Oilers need a kill. They desperately needed a kill here. They could not let Dallas get one. And then I think this takes 11 seconds. Uh at 558, Duchain buries one in close. Uh there were bodies in the way. Skinner was throwing his arms up as if he felt he was interfered with. At the very least, he wasn’t happy that he didn’t have a chance to make the save here at Duchine with his first of the playoffs. The assists to Hinten Rantin. So during the first two rounds, Rantin was in on almost every goal for Dallas. That changed tonight. And that’s good because if Dallas is going to take this the rest of the way and maybe win a championship, they can’t be relying on just one player to get that done offensively. Uh so Sean has a near miss as the Stars look for another. Now the momentum is shifted to Dallas. Edmonton kind of running around a bit here. Um Bishials denied from the doorstep. It’s all Dallas. Kappan fires one wide on a rush. The Oilers would then draw a power play. There’s an early clear and then another. The Stars do a good job of blocking during that power play. They kill that off. Just one shot on net for Edmonton during the power play. In fact, the shots are seven to four for Dallas with seven and a half minutes left. Heyman gets dinged on a dry cidle shot. That’s the price you pay for standing in front of the net and trying to block out the goalender. And it’s something I’m sure has happened to Heyman numerous times, but he was kind of limping a bit as he went back to the bench. Uh, and so yeah, uh, Johnston fires one wide on a rush. Kane has a net feed that’s blocked. Frederick fans on a slot chance. That was a prime opportunity and Trent Frederick just could not get that to go. And then at 1602, amazing hand eye coordination here by Sean. He bats a a backhand that was going to the net. He he bats it out of the air into the net. Uh Sean from Steel and Robertson. So it’s 1602. Right around that time where you know Edmonton would have been thinking about pulling the goalie because they’re down by one. Uh now they’re down by two. Uh so the goalie pull would happen not long after. And while I’m writing goalie pull on the board at 1645, Lindell Lindell hits the empty net. So one of the storylines that’s been very prominent in these playoffs is the Oilers play in the third period and how good the Oilers are in third periods. Keep in mind they had a 3 to1 lead going into the third. They lose this one 6-3. They had a plus 10 in third periods in the playoffs coming into tonight. Dallas just cut that in half. Now it’s a plus five. uh very different than a year ago where it was a 3-2 win for Edmonton. Clearly Dallas learned some lessons or at the very least it looks that way early on in the series. It’s just one game, but Dallas with a huge six to3 win and then everybody hugs each other at the horn because it’s what you do. Um including Perry kind of, you know, mocking, mimming uh Dallas player. Uh but at any rate, yeah, the dislike showed up towards the end of this one. We’ll see whether or not that rolls over into the second game. I’m thinking that it does. And uh it is a 6-3 win for Dallas. Shots on net 1210 Oilers in the first, 9-7 Oilers in the second, 11 to7 Dallas in the third. Both teams end up with 28 shots. The power play is the story. Last year Dallas didn’t score a single power play goal in the series. Tonight they went three for four. Uh the Oilers won for three. The hits 39 to 31 in favor of the Oilers. So the Oilers who had trouble with their penalty kill early in the playoffs against LA that shows up again tonight. Skinner saves 22 out of 27. I I don’t know how many of these he was supposed to save. I I am normally fine with people criticizing Skinner because at times it’s warranted. In this one, his save percentage isn’t good, but I don’t know how many of these he was supposed to save. Auter 25 saves on 28 shots at the other end. So, Otter outperforms Skinner. I will agree with that. Uh pretty good game. Nine goals in this one. Kind of fun. Kind of fun to watch. So, there you go. Uh the conference finals so far, seven goals in one game last night, nine goals tonight. That averages out to eight. That’s pretty entertaining. So, let me know your thoughts. Hit like and subscribe in the event you may not have done so already. And uh yeah, let me know how you feel about tonight’s game in the comments section below. As always, that being said, I will talk to you again soon.
This was a game with some big momentum shifts.

Bad news for the Oilers that game wasn't close on special teams. Good news though it wasn't close 5 on 5. Oilers completely controlled play 5 on 5
I have a feeling in the second intermisison pete deboer told the stars to give their balls a tug, wake up and set the fuckint tone.
Welcome to the stars trap. Where we make you think like you're gonna win every game… then we put our foot on your throats.😊
Felt like that post to make it 4-1 was the defining moment. If that goes in they might score another 2 before the end of the 2nd.
i'd imagine the Edmonton faithful will be back to scapegoating Skinner, as per their usual routine.
Was getting super worried when it was 3-1. Probably would have left if it was 4-1 but the post helped.
Good to get the PP monkey off their back quickly in the 3rd. Good to get it early as the penalties will get rare as the series goes on. Then again the penalties the Oilers took are always gonna get called. Especially the Perry one.
Oilers still look terrifying 5 on 5 so the Stars will need to figure that out. They were all out of sorts for 2 periods.
Honestly thought this game was over in the 2nd, glad my team proved me wrong. For some reason I can’t seem to get over the look on McDavid and Drai’s faces that they showed on the ESPN feed, they looked ultra defeated, and Skinner seemed to be rattled by at least the Duchene goal. If the Stars can capitalize on this game one shock, then this could be a very quick series.
Dallas is gonna win the cup
It was so over until we are so back, go stars baby.
I personally thought Otter got a little shook after the second goal but collected himself once we got more offence rolling. Just one dumbos thoughts.
They can make fun of us for not fighting all they want. It’ll lead to them in the box, with us scoring more pp goals and winning.
30 years of bettman. 30 years of no cup in Canada.
With all due respect: I was 8 when the North Stars moved. I will never forgive. A pox on the house of the Dallas Stars and everything they touch and do.
Stars wanted it more, bring on game 2.
🛑SKINNER 815 save percentage‼️Pathetic!!!!! 🤮
Mikael Granlund’s wrist shot is insane.
Come on stars fans, from a vgk fan, it's time to earn your badge and get that cup! This team is beyond stacked to not clown the oilers im the wcf and the scf.
"we played better, we should win the series", and Stars still win in the end. Same old story as the last 2 series.
Oh and Perry is going to get destroyed next game.
Me when Skinner let in that first goal: IT BEGINS!!💀
My Seguin jersey was proud yesterday. 😎 The stars are so resilient. Lets goooooo! 🌟
Oil need Ekholm back badly, he would make their PK exponentially better. But yeah, clearly need to be more discipline. Regardless, needed a PK stop.
EDM needs Ekholm back soon. DAL might get too far in front to catch. Three to one entering the third period but in less than 5 1/2 minutes, three DAL goals help them take the lead . . . during three power plays. Without the power play goals and the empty net, I think EDM had a chance and controlled most of the early game.
IT was Perry's stupidity that turned the game around. " We are dominating Dallas, here is a chance for me to check him in the face. They won't call it". WRONG WORM. They score and it all downhill from there.
Yeah Oilers shot themselves in the foot in this one.
Skinner throwing his arms up like he was interfered with while nobody is even in the crease. 🤦
The Oilers have mental issues.
If the Stars can beat Helle, they can beat Skinner.
The ref will make sure Dallas has the advantage at all cost as ordered. What a JOKE.
Defensive breakdowns all over the 3rd period. 2 of those goals were screened by 3 Oilers. 2 Great periods don't mean a thing if you throw away the 3rd
Oilers in 6
Love that sweater
edm took foot off gas gave Dallas all kinds of beauty chances and defence what defence
You can't give either of these teams room to breathe. I doubt this is the last come from behind win we see. Fun ride. Go Stars!
Otterrrrrrrr 🦦🦦🦦
Dallas has yet to play a full end to end game, except maybe game 5 of the first round. It's just a matter of time though, especially now that Duchene has broken the seal.
Happy for the Stars! They were my bracket pick
I'd say Edmonton was cleaning house the first two periods, against a real tough team. Minus the OUT of whack 3rd period (with 3 straight penalities) I'd have to say at a close +money edmonton line I'd have to take them. I think Dallas needed way too much to go right that third period to expect that luck again. It's prob a much closer game. My guess, Edmonton 3-2 or 4-3 in overtime
I got up to make a coffee, and said "Score one while im gone to make it 5-3," and two minutes later I'm back, coffee in hand and sure enough, its 5-3. Ive been calling things out all season and for the most part, the Stars have done them. Its kind of weird tbh.
I'm here after Skinner's Game 2 shutout. This series probably goes 7.
