πŸ”΄ LIVE Miami Marlins vs Los Angeles Angels | Full Game Highlights | May 24, 2025 | MLB 2025

just about ready to go. And today’s starter, Jack Kachanowitz. Well, no doubt about it. He’s going to have to put together some consistently good performances in order to bring that erra down. Now, he’s got good stuff. He’s just got to be able to have confidence, trust it, and really go after hitters. Not nibble. Trust that his stuff can have late life in miss barrels of bats. ready to go now. Leading off, Jesus Sanchez. And that’s through there for a strike. And that’s how this game gets started. First pitch 707. Here comes the one. And that traps in for a strike. up the middle and that one handled. No play. That’s an infield single. Well, from the time you’re a little leager, you’re taught to hustle out of the box and give it a full sprint through the base regardless of how you hit it. And he didn’t make great contact, but the effort was there. And he earns the base hit. Augustine Ramirez in now takes ball one off the plate. Double play ball to second. Needto for one. Relay the first double play. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big Lakers. They make tough plays that look simple. Eric Wagaman the next up for the Marlins [Applause] right through there for a strike. [Music] Two outs. Base is empty. Next offering in there for a strike. That’s strike two. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. Check swing on an 02. Appeal to first and he went around. Not an easy call there, but that puts an end to the inning. The Marlins down quietly now. The Angels will get their first crack at it. No score. Back after this on the show. back in Anaheim. And today’s starter, Max Meyer. What do you have on him, Sigy? Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. And it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point, maybe it’s the motion, but just some way, somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. Zack Nitto, the leadoff batter, as he swings through it for strike one. [Music] [Applause] Swing and a foul out of play. Cut on and lifted in the air. stretches out and holds it in. All right, let’s take a look at the Angels lineup. Singing the numbers tell us this is an offense designed to swing it. They’re not going to force a ton of action on the bases and so obviously that is one of the focal points that we’ll look at. And you look at the quality of the at bats because of the fact that the legs aren’t a part of this game. They have to be very selective. Look for long pitch counts, grinding out at bats, and really barrels to the baseball because it’s a lot easier to jog around the bases than for these players to sprint. Luis Rango stands in now and watches strike one right side. Sanchez and puts the squeeze on that one and there’s two away. Batting third, left fielder, Taylor. Two out, space is empty at the plate. Taylor Ward, good power. Not great in the OBP department. That one off the mark. Ball one. Foul ball. The 1-1. That’s down and in. Two and one. And a foul ball. He stays alive. But why the kick the pitch and that one hit to first? He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. And the Angels are gone in order. We played an inning. No score. Back here at Angel Stadium. All set for the start of the inning. And now for the Marlins, Kyle Sters. Coachitz 24 years old and he was a third round pick back in 2019. Fouled off. He was [Applause] late. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. And that’ll fall for a base hit. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. I don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike, but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock. Now it’s going to be Otto Lopez. The one up. Here goes the runner. Fly ball down the line and no one can get to it. It’s a foul [Music] ball. The 1-1 swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Brings it in and there’s one down. Boy, that was a hanging breaking ball right there. I think he tried to do a little bit too much. Sometimes those eyes can get really big. I think his swing broke down as well and that’s what caused him to pop it up. So up next, Connor Norby swinging a miss. It’s 0 and one. Well, the key to his success is getting ahead early in the count. He cannot afford to go deep in the counts. Doesn’t have a ton of swing and miss stuff. There’s a swing and a drive and it’s gone. He jacks that one out to left. It’s two nothing. He’s bringing the thunder in a rainstorm. How in the world did he manage to hit that pitch out? I got to believe when a pitcher releases a breaking ball up out of his hand, he just hopes that it stays really high so the hitter has no chance of swinging it. Well, no luck there. That is a hard hit ball and a home run. And now Matt Mervvis, he swings and fouls one off. Still only one out here in the inning. The next pitch misses. One ball, one strike. Our umpire for this one, Freddy Ferguson, a consistent umpire by all accounts. Yeah, I think the book on him is that he’s not necessarily by the book with his strike zone. But once you figure out where he’s calling strikes, you can pretty much count on him to stay with that throughout the game. Singing, what kind of strike zone is most frustrating for hitters? I’d say off the plate, away and down. And why those are the toughest locations to hit the baseball. As the game has moved along, we see more and more information supplied by teams about the umpires. I’ve been in clubhouses where they have pictures of all four guys nicknames, hometowns, and as well hobbies listed just so you can kind of small talk the umpire a little bit. That’s great. He had him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this, known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. And now Ram Paulie. One and0 on the ground. right side, handles, throws the first, and that’s the third out. Two-run shot for Miami this inning. It’s now a two nothing ball game. It’s Major League Baseball, and it’s on the show. Bottom of the second, Jorge Solair up into play. Made it hitter Jorge Solair. And that’s outside. This one chopped on the ground but foul. Yeah, that’s too high. That one misses and now three and one 3-1 and that drops in for a strike. You got a full count. Swing and a miss and he struck him out. That’s one out in the bottom of the second. came inside with that two strike fast ball nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate. Couldn’t get around on it and catch it out front. Many times if you do, it’s a foul ball. And you know, a lot of pitchers, they really don’t like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter. And when they’ve got them up against the ropes, got to figure out a way to put them away. Did a nice job right there. On its way to the corner and that will drop foul. Swaging a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands and they’ll do it again. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And that’s downstairs and outside. One out. Base is empty. [Applause] Just off the inside corner. Two and two. still just the second batter of the inning. And on the mound, he’s already thrown 13 pitches. They got him working hard out there. Still two and two after the foul ball. [Music] And there’s a ball. Grinding AB right here. About to see pitch number 10. Foul ball and it remains a full count towards first. Mervvis takes it himself. He made the pitcher earn that out after a long atielder Joe Adele. Here’s Joe Adele taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform, but at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. There’s his strike. Next offering is fouled back. Hats and misses. It’s a strikeout. Angels held in check. They trail things here two nothing. Onto the third inning. And at the plate for Miami, Derek Hill Coach back to work. Edge of the zone for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. Cold night tonight, Boo. And that’s a pretty firm fast ball right there. I tell you what, memories of getting jammed, they creeping into my mind right now. [Music] [Applause] on the ground and foul ball. Next one misses. Two balls, two strikes. [Music] [Applause] gets a piece and stays alive. That misses the zone and the count’s full. fouls that off to the left and will do it [Music] [Applause] again in the air. Foul off first. Ranifo right there to make the grab. One away. Now batting right fielder Jesus Sanchez. Next to hit, Pesu Sanchez reached on an infield single his first time. Tap foul at the plate. One and one. Next offering is in for a [Applause] strike and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. and down on strikes and he’s registered three Ks in this one. I love to see guys compete and I know he’s frustrated that he wasn’t able to do anything with that pitch. You see it so well, but you have to respect the upper 90s velocity. Man, it is hard to catch up to. Ramirez in the box now. No balls in a strike. [Applause] And now it’s even up. [Music] [Applause] The one-1 is fouled off. Swings and misses. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. Nothing doing for the Marlins, but they’re on top two nothing. And we’re back. And here’s the rookie center fielder, Matthew number 15. That one fouled off. And the swinging to miss. Oh, and two. swings and misses. Struck him out. That was a wellexecuted slider away for the strikeout right there. First two pitches filled up the zone and got him ahead 02 on the count. And at that point, you can start expanding the zone as a pitcher. He made him chase and got the quick strike out. The batter now, Kevin Newman in there at the knees for a strike. Oh, one down. And that one fouled off. Swing and a ground ball out to short in plenty of time to first and two straight set down to begin the bottom of the third. Second baseman Tim Anderson. Here’s Tim Anderson. So easy to look at the big boys in this lineup, but he has been a pleasant surprise all season long. Ball one, no strikes. Here’s the swing and a line drive and a base hit to right field and that turns the lineup over. So, the batting order turns over and now the shorts stop. Zack Neto flyed to right. his first time. Bounding ball here. Rolls foul out towards right center field. Hill giving chase. He’s got it. And that will end the inning. Angels strand one. They trail it here. Two nothing and welcome back to the ballpark. Now it’s the DH Eric Wag3. And the first offering is not close. There’s a strike. It feels like we might be headed towards a rain delay if the weather doesn’t ease up, Chris. Yeah, the umpir and crew are going to pay attention to how the weather is impacting this game. And the moment it becomes dangerous, I think is the moment we’ll be forced to take a break. You know, these Marlins showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. They’re doing a good job of working the pitch count and they’ve been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well. And now it’s filled up. Still relatively early, but with a pair of runs already on the board, the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set them up to do more damage later in this game. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. That one misses. So a lead off walk. Well, a breaking ball in that 3-2 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. Man at first. And up next for Miami, Kyle Sters, one for one with a single and a run scored so far. That’s too low and it’s one and0. There’s the strike of the knees. One and one. That one finds the zone and a count. One and two. And that’s down and away. swing and a ball driven pretty well out towards left center. Ward makes the grab on the run. Every day during batting practice, these outfielders get about 10 minutes of balls in the gaps. They practice this and when the game comes, they make the play perfectly. And now for the Marlins. Otto Lopez. He popped out to the catcher. His first time up. Pitch misses inside. Ball one. We haven’t seen a break in the weather and the umpires might be forced to make a decision soon. Runner on the move. Fouled off down the right side. There’s a strike. swing and a miss. 98 miles per hour on the gun. That’s tough. You see it well. I mean, that was clearly up and out of the strike zone, but that’s one of the hardest things that when you see a pitch out of the hand at eye level, that discipline to remember, I can’t hit that pitch. If I can see it really well at eye level, I can’t catch up to that pitch when a pitcher’s got this kind of velocity. Norby in the box now as he looks at ball one. Second played appearance of the day for him. Hard hit right side. They get the force. That’s out number three. One left for Miami, but they hold the two nothing lead. Back in Anaheim. Bottom four. So in down for the Angels, Luis Reano. Luis Reano. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. One ball, no strikes. And that one ripped to left. And that’s a base hit. So a man on base to start the inning. Everything came together for him. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. So digging in, Taylor Ward grounded out his first time. Well, here’s a good opportunity in this inning to get on the scoreboard after that leadoff hit. And hardly order coming up right behind them. This is where they need to get [Applause] [Music] [Applause] going. It’s going back to left center. On its way and that one’s out of [Applause] here. That’s worth the price of admission. His 14th of the year. It’s 22. Listen to these fans. This place is absolutely buzzing right now. You can feel the energy all the way up here in our broadcast [Applause] booth. A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. Jorge Solair the next to hit for the Angels. Slapped foul. Nobody on, nobody out. A pair of runs across in the inning. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. And that one missing low. That’s off the inside corner and it’s two and one. [Applause] And the slider just misses. A rare three ball count here. He’s been throwing strikes all day. Got to be ready to hit if you’re in the box. [Applause] fouls one away and now three and two. Gets under and pops it up. Norby settles under this one. Corrals it and there’s one down. Good hard fast ball up in the zone right there. They look really good coming in, but so hard to get on top of as a hitter. Logan O’Hap the next to hit for the Angels and downstairs. [Applause] No, that’s in. Got to be real careful here. 200. He’s hunting for his pitch. [Applause] Oh, look at the stop. Takes it himself and he got him. Nicely done at first for the out. Now batting right fielder Joe Adele. So two down now. And here is Joe Adele. Struck out swinging his first time. That one outside and that’s ball one and he’s swinging a miss one one and now two and one last couple of pitches breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. That one ripped left field way back there and it’s into the bullpen for a homer. Second home run of the inning for him and they grab the lead. It’s 3-2. He was able to hit one out in this weather. Are you kidding me? How did he do that? That slider on the outside part of the plate is typically hit the other way, but to be able to get to it, hold the baseball and get it up in the air for a home run, I’m just really [Applause] impressed. Two outs, nobody on. And next for LA, Matthew Lugo. That one ripped and a foul [Music] ball. Two outs. That one at 95. Missed up top. And it’s a ball and a strike in the air left field. He’s there. He’s got it. That is the inning. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s now a 32 ball game. Major League Baseball is on the show. Back here at Angel Stadium. Top five, John Shabi with Chris Singleton. And leading it off, Matt MVvis. [Music] And the first pitch misses for ball one. You know, these Marlins just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. Chasing pitches has been a big part of the story. We’ve seen it quite a bit today. It’s been tough for him to make contact at times and it just doesn’t look like they’re seeing it very well as a group. Hard ground ball base knock. He was over that one. Smash that one through the infield for the knock. When it’s hit that hard, it makes it very tough on the infielders to make any sort of play. Stepping in, Graham Paulie rolled out to second in his first at bat. Close but called a ball. And that is ball one. [Applause] right through there for a strike. And on the mound, you know, confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses. He’s had him eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game. Fly ball center field, Lugo. And there’s one away. Now batting the center fielder Derek Hill. And at the plate for Miami, Derek Hill 0 for one as he popped out foul to first. Yeah, that’s fouled off. [Applause] A little out front there as he swings through. Then he really sells the change up with that arm action. Good job to fight that one off. [Applause] Bounced up the middle. Dive and he’s got it. Not in time. He’s safe. Oh, just a nice job coming through in a pretty high leverage spot right there. He got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point. Pretty impressive for an 02 count. Now a pretty big at bat coming up with a chance to even this ball game up. Digging in, Pesu Sanchez and fouled off. tying run in scoring position and we’re in the top of the fifth and that one fouled off. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. Swing and a miss. Stuck him out. Nothing happening on the bases though. You hear people talk about letting the ball travel so often in terms of a hitting approach and that’s a great example why right there. If he’s willing to let that curveball get a little deeper into the zone before he commits, he’s way more likely to recognize that it’s making a beline for the dirt. On the other side, still a nice two- strike pitch though. And the batter now, Augustine Ramirez, and a strike in there. Mvvis at second. Hill out of first with two down. [Applause] cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. He’s in a tough spot. Had to make a great pitch. Did it. Got the strike out. Gets out of the jam. Clearly, he’s happy with those results. And we’re back now. Here is Kevin Newman. Third base, Kevin Newman. And that finds the mark on the outside corner. 0 and one. And that drops in for a strike. That one outside and the count is one and two. And a popup right side foul territory. Mvvis on his way over and out number one on the grab. Up next for the Angels, second base Tim. And now it’s Tim Anderson. One for one with a single so far. That’s in there. And that’s strike one. Base is empty, one away. Last half of inning number five. And that one clips the corner. Oh, and two. Swing. And a ball drilled in the air towards right center field. They got it for out number two. Now batting the shortstop. Back to the top of the Angels lineup. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Zack Netto for two in this one. And that’s a little bit high. One and0 line drive base hit. So a two out knock keeps the inning alive. Just so sound in his mechanics. hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field. Luis Renifo gets a chance to hit here. One for two and first offering is fouled off rudder takes off. Pitch is low. That’s a ball. throw to second and the inning is over. The catcher definitely ready for that stolen base attempt. Got in position quickly and a strike down to second base to end the inning. And welcome back to the ballpark. And now the DH Eric Wagaban coach back to work to third. Newman zips it across and that’s one out as they get the leadoff hitter in the six. Here’s the cleanup hitter for Miami. Kyle Sters. He is singled and he has fly to left. Here we go. Hard ground ball base knock. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Now the Angels manager is out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Jack Kachanowitz will depart. Gave him a good effort as he exits with a lead. And we’ll have a new pitcher when we come back. Now pitching Sean Anderson comes on now. still a lot of game left and this game could go either way. So, this is a big opportunity for him to get some important outs and try to help carry this lead into the later innings. And now it’s going to be Otto Lopez in the dirt. Blocked. And an excellent job keeping it right there. Yeeha! [Music] [Applause] One-on-one strand and a miss and it’s one and two with two strikes. may see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Two two with a tying run on at first. And we’re the top half of the six. [Applause] dribbled up the third baseline and it’s just fouled. That was close. [Applause] [Applause] And the swing and it is. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. Well, that’s the money maker right there. Two strikes slider down and away from a same side thrower as the hitter. I mean, that’s just tough. You’re looking to protect with two strikes and very difficult to lay off. Here’s the third baseman, Connor Norby. He’s already homered in this game. Right through there for a strike. [Applause] And that one is inside ball one. The one-1 swing and a miss. chased it out of the zone. He has a tendency to chase out of the zone and that slider that’s down, that’s one of his money pitches to get that swing and miss. Slider misses outside. He goes down looking. Nice work from the angel pen there. 234 two up in the home half of the six. It’s the Angels three and the Marlins two. Back now for the bottom of the sixth. And there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Calantrol just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpin can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Quantrol. Well, one- run game. Now the number two hitter, Luis Reano. Luis Raho. First pitch just misses. Signs of activity in the pen for the Marlins. Jesus Tanokco getting loose out there. Weathers also throwing the other way. Norby slings it across and a quick out number one. Now batting left fielder Taylor Ward. [Applause] And a foul ball. [Music] Foul ball there. That one just misses. Now one and two. Really good take, especially with two strikes. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. Quantrol ahead one and two. Fights it off. He’ll see another Quantrol back to work. Two and two. Eighth pitch of the bat coming up. Quite the matchup we’re seeing here. Six foul balls in this at bat alone. really making him work out there. Swing and a miss. Struck him out at a splitter. First strike out for him in this one. And that splitter is maybe the go-to pitch when he’s looking for a swing and miss like that. He throws it quite a bit. And that’s a good example of the effect it can have on a hitter. Solair stands in here, leaves that one off the inside. That clips a corner. And that’s downstairs. Two and one. Two balls, one strike. And it finds its way through for a hit. And that extends the inning. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. And next for the Angels, Logan Ohappy has grounded out a couple of times. First pitch misses. Quantrol back to work up the middle. Paulie, they take the force out. That’s the inning. Angels leave one and it remains a 3-2 ball game. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound. Well, he’s been a really tough guy to take deep this season. You usually have to string some hits together in order to get to him. And now the first baseman, Matt Murvvis. First baseman, Matt Murvvis. and ball. That’s a ball. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Brock Burke preparing to come on if needed. Nerys, a right-hander loosening up as well, looking to get the tying run on base. Ground ball right side into the outfield. Base hit. Always feels amazing getting a job done when the team needs you to come through. It’s just bigger than your own individual stats. Just one of those seen eye base hits through the infield. He just kind of rolled over on it a little bit, but sometimes those can find a hole and get you a knock. No outs. Runner at first. Here’s the second baseman Graham Paulie and a sack bunt here. Neto for one and he’ll eat it and be happy with the out. If you want to be a great defense, you have to deliver consistently. It doesn’t matter how many highlight reel plays you make if you can’t execute the small stuff just like we saw. Derek Hill the next up for the Marlins. That one missed. Way to lay off that pitch down. One ball, no strikes. [Applause] And another ball outside. [Applause] Hard ground ball for a base stop. Here comes the throw. He’s safe at third and the tying run is 90 ft away. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. Jesus Sanchez the next up for the Marlins. One for three. First off, and it just misses. [Applause] That’s through there for a strike. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. [Applause] Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Next offering way off the plate. That’s a little bit low. So, here we go. Base runner first. Could be running on the pitch. He’s got good enough speed to steal the bag to get in scoring position. Even if it’s a swing and miss at the plate. That ball is foul and the pressure is building. [Applause] Ground ball could be two offbalance feed. There’s one return to first. Got him. Double play. And that’ll do it. So no runs on two base hits. No errors and one left on. Midway in inning number seven. And it’s time to stretch. It’s the Angels three and the Marlins two. set for the last half of the seventh. So in now for the Angels, Joe Adell leading off for the Hill right fielder Joe Adell. That’s outside and it’s one and0. Just missed. Two and 0. Called strike. A sinker at the bottom of the zone. Two-1 to the right side. Boots it. Still able to fire over and they get the out. Good recovery. Wasn’t easy following the misplay. Good sinker low in the zone right there and produced exactly what he was looking for. Ball on the ground. Nice ground out. And now the center fielder, Matthew Luggo. Base is empty, one away here. The bottom of the seventh. Swing and a miss. And he was fooled. 02. Next pitch just misses. Now one and two ball, two strikes. And there’s a ball. He’s trying to stay down in the zone, but the hitter just will not chase. Now back in a two- two count. He’s going to have to go to something else to get him out. And that just misses. That’s one you always want as a pitcher down at the knees. And it looks to me like he’s barking. That’s a strike. Doesn’t change the call, but sometimes it helps to let that frustration out a little bit. Highf fly ball out to left field. Sters. He’s got it. Two down. Now batting third base Kevin. Two down. Base is empty. The batter now Kevin Newman. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Swing and a miss as he was late that time. One and one line drive. That’s a hit. And now a two out opportunity for Tim Anderson. Now batting second Tim Anderson down. Tim Anderson that finds the mark on the inside corner. 0 and one. Yeah. Angels. Two outs. And that is downstairs. Yeah. The count one and two. And that one missing low and a curve misses outside. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. Swinging a foul ball at the plate. They’ll do it again. Swing at a line drive. Ripped out of the right center. That’s a base hit and that’ll put runners at the corners with two away. Love how he became a really tough out with two strikes right there. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on the line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages working on going to the opposite field and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did and he did it perfectly. All right, Los Angeles. [Applause] Needto swings through it for strike one. balls. One strike. Next offering misses down and away. That’s in there. Two, [Applause] two and two in the dirt but kept close. Count moves to two and two as the runners hold and a swing and a miss. That ends the inning as they squander a chance to pick up some insurance. No runs on two hits, no errors, and two men left stranded. Eighth inning coming up, it’s the Angels three and the Marlins two. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Hector Nerris. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Ah, that hit him. That hit him. And the lead off man is aboard to start the inning. Looks like we’ve got a substitution at first. Marlins bring on a pinch runner number 41. No outs. Runner at first. And next is the designated hitter, Eric Wagaban. [Applause] swaying in a miss. There’s the slider. It’s 0 and one. It’s 0 and one with the go ahead run at the plate and we’re in the top of the eighth. [Applause] Nope. Action in the Angels bullpen. Canly Jansen the closer is getting ready and perhaps looking at a long save opportunity here. [Applause] little chopper rolls [Applause] foul. Drilled in the air high and deep right field. that’s got a chance out of here. His fourth home run of the season and the Marlins jump out in front. It’s 43. That sound you hear is every rider in the press box smashing the delete button on their keyboards. Talk about flipping the script, Boo. This story was set up for a different type of finish. Now, who knows how to live? Boo. I wasn’t sure he hit that one as hard as he needed to to get it out of here, but it had just enough behind it for the homer. What an attempt at the wall, though. He really gave a terrific effort to try and bring that one back. Next to hit, Kyle Sters. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Nerys measures 6’2 in. He features a four seam fast, a splitter, a sinker, and he works in a slider. Fouled off left side. bounce to the right on to first. First out in the top of the eighth and now Otto Lopez 0 for three in this one. [Applause] Pitch is in there and it’s 0 and one. Swing and a miss. Squitter of the dirt. No ball to Frank. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Little early on that fast ball. I’m sure the pitcher taking a note. Look for an off speed pitch on this next one. [Applause] A short stop takes the ball. [Music] [Applause] Lopez started after it, tried to hold up. Now look to first and he couldn’t hold back. He’s run up on strikes. Well, a tough night at the dish. Punching out for the third time right there. He just hasn’t looked very comfortable at the plate. A little unsure of his timing right now. Not picking up the spin and location of these pitches. He’ll have some adjustments to make out front with the swing. And that is strike one. No balls, one strike. Hit on the ground to the right side and it goes just fouled. Two down to stays alive. [Music] [Applause] Cuts on it. misses. That’s a strike out. Chase the fast up the ladder for strike three, but two come across to score in the inning, courtesy of this two-run homer. It’s now a 43 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, Lake Backer. He pitched yesterday and we’ll see him once again. Number 84, Blake Walker. Nick Forz, the new catcher now. Now catching number four. So digging in, Luis Rangifo. And leading off for the Hills, first baseman, Luis Reano. Missed with a change up. Ball one. Miami’s bullpen with some action. Anthony Bender, the closer of the staff, is throwing [Applause] close, but called a ball. And now two and 0. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. That’s a strike. And it’s two and one now in today’s game. Not that many fast ball counts, but hitters still in the back of their minds. They’re looking for one. 20 change up call right there. Excellent pitch selection to go with. Next offering misses and the down is three and one. Almost feel like he’s frustrated a little bit. He wants to be challenged. [Applause] Clips the corner and the count’s full. Count is full. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another and the tying run is on base. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that wall. Substitution being made at first. Entering is the pinch runner, Kyron Paris. Now the left fielder, Taylor Ward. He’s already homered here in this one. This one chopped on the ground but foul. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] And that one is inside. [Applause] [Applause] way high. That’s the ball [Applause] and it remains two and two. [Applause] Swings through it and that’s a strike out. Just a great slider right there. And I think the key for pitchers and what hitters don’t want to see is if a pitcher misses with that pitch that he misses off the edge of the strike zone rather than in the middle of the strike zone. And right there, excellent execution and it finished up in a perfect spot. Now it’s the DH for the Angels. Jorge Solair. Well, with pretty good speed over there at first base. I think the pitcher’s got to slow everything down. Hold the ball a little bit. step off. Just try to break the rhythm and timing of a potential base stealer. Backer keeping an eye on him. He’s got plus speed, but in this situation, all eyes are going to be over there trying to keep his lead tight. The kick and the pitch. Runner goes full outside. Throw save and the tying run is now in scoring position. Highf fly ball and that one curling foul down the right [Applause] [Music] [Applause] side. Swing and a miss. And the count one and two. One and two is the count. So the tying run at second. Battling here as he fouls it away. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open. [Music] [Applause] Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. Highfly ball down the left field line. Back there. He makes the catch and there’s two down. [Applause] Up next for the Angels catcher Logan. Now the Marlins manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Lake Backer won’t go any further and he’s responsible for the runner on second so the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. So they bring on their closer in the eighth. Anthony Bender. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves. Late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. And next for LA, Logan O’Hap. Three ground outs already. He’s 0 for three. This is what stat nerds like myself might call a high leverage situation. Yeah, Boo. Not sure what the numbers say, but clearly an at bat that could change the course of this game dramatically. [Applause] That’s inside. That’s in. [Applause] That one finds the zone and it’s one and one. Holding on to a one-run lead here in the bottom half of the eighth [Applause] inning. in the air out towards left center, squeezes it, and that is the third out of the inning. Well, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Rock. And compared to a lot of other relievers, strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year. So the defense should be active. Nolan Shawell getting loose there. He’s now in the game at first. First base. Number 18. One run game. And now for the Marlins, Matt Mervvis. A little surprised we don’t see a pinch hitter here. But the lefty lefty matchup. Fast for a strike. Activity of the bullpen for the Angels. Connor Brogden up and loosening in the pen. Strickland warming up as well. And strike two. No ball. Two strikes. Had a break. Ball misses outside. [Applause] the one two and a foul ball. He stays alive and the next pitch is way outside. chases the change up in the dirt. Gets to it onto first in time to get him. One away on the strike out. And up next for Miami, Graham Paulie and that’s off the inside edge. Ball w [Applause] just missed. That one pushed to the left and fouled. Swing and a miss as he was out front that time. Next offering away upstairs. One-run game here in the top of the ninth. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Very strong coming out of the pin so far as he punches out the first two batters he’s faced in this one. Getting straight to work. Man, it’s talked about a lot, but relievers are just so electric these days. He’s having fun at bats if you’re a hitter. I’m so glad I’m retired. Hill in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. just missed. Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So that’s a good take by him. That one the other way makes the grab and that’ll end the inning. So they go quietly there. 678 scheduled to start the bottom of the ninth. It’s the Marlins four and the Angels three. Back in Anaheim and here is Joe Adell. right fielder Joe [Applause] Adele and ball to the right [Applause] fielder liner and this could be trouble and that’ll pick off the base of the wall into second base. The tying run is on with a leadoff double. Just a clutch at bat right there. Big time swing when this team really needed it. Pretty much just a textbook double into the gap. And when you can drop one in there between the outfielders, you know you’re making the turn at first. Just an excellent swing. Really important at bat coming up now with the tying run and scoring position in the bottom of the ninth. Here’s the center fielder Matthew Lug and one. a onun lead. And the home team trying to pull it out. And that one fouled off. [Applause] Fast Bumble. Almost got him there. [Applause] swing and a ball popped up. Calls it in and there’s one away. Now batting third base Kevin Newman. Kevin Newman the next to hit for the Angels. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. Swanging a ball lifted in the air. Sanchez gets under it. He’s got it. There’s two away. Up next for the Angels, second baseman, Tim Anderson. So they’re down to their final out. Tim Anderson the next to hit for the Angels trying to deliver as the hero. You got the number nine hole hitter right here. Looking to do whatever he can to get on base, turn this lineup over so the best hitters in this lineup have a chance to tie up the ball game. Hit to right and that ought to do it. And he’s got it. Ball game. And the Marlins hold on to win a tight one as this one ends as a one-run ball game. Well, this was a tightly played game. Got a little of everything. Some timely hitting, runs on the board, key pitching, and defense in certain spots. Definitely a fun one to watch. What the heat?
