π΄ LIVE: Kansas City Royals vs Cincinnati Reds | MLB Full Game | May 26, 2025 | Highlights
Live from Kaufman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. Baseball coming up on this Memorial Day. It’s the Cincinnati Reds going up against the Kansas City Royals. First pitch coming your way next. Just about set and on the hill, Michael Waka. Well, he’s putting together a really nice season on the mound. Erra in the low threes. Very respectable when you consider guys are looking to do damage. They’re not trying to just walk and hit singles. They’re trying to hit homers and draw walks and score runs. So, when you have a guy that can limit the other team from scoring more than a few runs, that’s really tough to beat game in and game out. And now the center fielder TJ Fredel and a foul ball [Music] on its way to the corner and that will drop foul. Next offering misses. Going to count one and two. [Music] Battling here as he fouls it away. Fights that one away. Still one and two. gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. [Applause] Here’s a one, two. And that’s outside. Hit on the ground to the right side. And that’s just foul. Here’s a 2-2. This one popped up right side. India under it and makes the grab. And there’s one away. Here’s the lineup for the Reds. A really frustrating showing for them in their last game. Lots of traffic on the bases, but they left a ton of runners on base. Couldn’t cash in their chances. Chris, they had plenty of chances. There’s nobody to blame it on but themselves offensively. They just did a poor job converting in those situations. You have to figure out what’s your plan going to be. Maybe watch some tape from the last game. Make the adjustments. So if you get those opportunities in this one, you’ve got a much better chance of scoring some runs. Santiago Espino stands in now and watches strike one. Waka, he has a reputation, I don’t know, maybe a knack for working himself out of tough situations that he finds himself in. You know, you like that in a relief pitcher, but when you have it for a starting pitcher, a guy that can’t get out of a tight spot, that is pretty valuable. [Music] Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. And you won’t see the skipper rush to get somebody up in the bullpen as soon as he starts to see some signs of trouble. This guy’s earned a longer leash. And because of that, confidence grows with the players and teammates playing behind him that when things get a little rough out there, they know he’ll find his way through it. How much of the ability to do that in a tight spot is the mental approach? I think it’s very much being able to have a laser-like focus, slow everything down, stay right in that moment, pitch to pitch execution, and focusing on that catcher man. De Cruz. So, man aboard and ready to hit now for Cincinnati. Ellie Dea Cruz. Pitch misses and that’s ball one. So, here’s a fun note on Ellie. He became the youngest player in high a ball to homer from both sides of the plate in the same game. And it gets better. He did it again two games later. Those are the type of games that tend to get you promoted in the minors. That misses the zone. Now 2 and 0. There’s the strike. Man at first, one away. Next offering is fouled back. [Applause] Right-hander kicks, steals, swing, and a miss. Stuck him out and now two ball. And Chris, that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base. And the defense breathes a sigh of relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play. But that’s how you do it. Keep him off balance, get him out of there, and deal with the next guy. Austin Hayes stands in with two away as he takes a ball. Well, with this many pitches thrown here in this first inning, I mean, you’re giving the other team a really good look. He’s going to have to find a way to get some weak contact, maybe a swing and miss, get into that dugout, and hit the reset button. India tosses to first and that will end the inning. Reds leave one. The Royals will get their chance now in a scoreless ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the [Applause] show. Back here at Kaufman Stadium and towing the slab, Andrew Abbott. Chris, he’s got the ability to take control of a game when he’s out there. Well, incredible mound presence and he’s going to attack hitters. Look at that strikeout per nine ratio over 10 coming into this start. So, he’s a pitcher that wants the ball. He’s aggressive. He knows that he can get the swing and miss, especially when he needs it most. We’ll see how effective he is in this one. Bottom of the first. Now, it’s the second baseman, Jonathan India, swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. [Applause] any one and there’s a ball. [Music] There’s a swing and a miss. One ball, two strike. That misses two and two. [Music] And that one [Applause] upstairs swing and a popup. Steer makes the catch and there’s one gone. And here now the lineup for the Royals. And so far this year, this has not been a very good offense. Well, in this day and age, if you can’t slug and get on base, that OPS has to be at a certain level. If you’re going to produce runs, give your pitchers an opportunity as they’re facing tough offenses as well. Now, here’s Bobby Whit Jr. singing. He’s never finished the season with more stolen bases in his entire career. Strike on the outside. 0 and one. Back door him with a breaking ball. Just got the corner. There’s nothing you can really do with that. And that’s in for a strike. Quickly down 02 in the count. I think you got to choke up a little bit. Spread out the feet. You don’t know what the velocity or the location of this next pitch is going to be. That misses the zone. It’s a ball in two strikes. 02 count. You got the opportunity to expand the zone. Could get the chase there. Let’s see what he comes back with next. One out. Base is empty. lifted in the air right field. Benson makes the play and there’s two away. Batting third, the first baseman, Vinnie. Two down, base is empty. Vinnie Pasquantino now at the plate. He’s been on fire at the dish lately, batting over 300 so far this month. And first offering is fouled off. Two out. Space is empty. In there for a strike at the top of the zone. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle [Music] away. Down to the dirt swing and a miss. Stevenson to first in time. So the drop third strike doesn’t hurt him. And that’s that. Scoreless after one. All set for the start of the inning. Now at the plate, Gavin Lux. Gavin Lux. Walka back to work. Lux throws right, bats left, hitting fifth in today’s lineup. And he’s one of the few players in Major League Baseball, born in Wisconsin. Just missed. [Music] That one misses. And now three and one. That one misses. So a lead off walk. That exist. The first base. And now the first baseman Spencer Steer. Steer out of the corner for a strike. It’s 0 and one. move to first. Back in on a dive line and a base hit into right. Lead runner holds up. They’re at first and second with nobody out. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. didn’t get jumpy, didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep, took the barrel right to it, and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. Runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. First and second, no outs. Next for Cincinnati, Will Benson just missed. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. Ball two. Two balls. No strike. Tap foul at the plate. [Music] And that one fouled off. First and second, no outs here in the top of the second. 32 in the dirt. No advance. Good job behind the dish. Got him. And that is a big first out. Tyler Stevenson getting ready to hit and a swing to miss. 01’s the count. Next pitch is downstairs. Way to lay off that pitch down. He’s looking for a ground ball to get a double play and out of this jam. One out. Runners at first and second. [Applause] And a count one and two. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Fouls it off. Still one and [Applause] two. Two on, one out. Foul ball still a one and two count. No score here in the second. That one misses. It’s two and two. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Well, not every great at bat ends in a hit. You saw a lot of pitches. That kind of an at bat can be contagious to a lineup. Matt Mlan, [Applause] Matt Mlan will hit next. How many times have we seen an early at bat change the course of a game? It happens every night in baseball. And maybe it happens again here. Check swing and he went strike one. 0 and one. [Applause] Finish him. Two on, two outs. Not close and it deflects away. So on the wild pitch, two guys advance. No trouble moving up to second on that play with the ball getting that far away from the catcher. Nice job to take advantage of the wild pitch. That one just misses and the count is two and two. Was a good pitch there. Billy had some run and finished little up and in just another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve, but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results. And right there, thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam. Bottom half of inning number two. And now here’s the better, Salvador Perez. [Music] Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. [Music] That misses the zone. One ball, one strike. That’s a ball. He got two balls, one strike. [Music] Swings through that one. I think he was sitting off speed there. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. Pretty simple plan of attack on the mound right there, huh? Yeah, nothing but fast balls. They just kept putting down the number one and letting it fly. I like it. Yeah, me too. And I’d love to hit against that. But of course, when you’re in the box, you think he’s bound to change speeds on you at some point. You’re just kind of locked up. Sort of like reverse psychology. Now, Mikel Garcia. First pitch misses. [Applause] right through there for a strike. Looks like he’s just sizing him up there. Really good pitch to hit, but he took it all the way. Sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game. That may be a pitch that he turns on. That’s a little bit low. basketball for a strike. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going [Music] and a swing and a miss and he’s registered three Ks in this one. Off to a strong start, Singi, as he’s punched out three of the first five he’s faced. Oh, he’s definitely minimizing contact. He can get the swing and miss when he needs it, but he’ll also keep the defense fresh behind him, allowing some balls in play as well. Here’s Marana. First pitch doesn’t find his own. Two down. Nobody on. Hit in the air. Center field. Fredel nabs it. That is the inning. We’ll move to the third with no score. Back here in Kansas City, here’s the center fielder, TJ Fredle. swinging a foul straight back on the ground out to short dives but it kicks off his glove. No throw and he reaches safely. The third baseman number four Santiago. Now the number two hitter Santiago Espino one for one with a single so far to the left side but it is well fouled. Oh here’s a good opportunity in this inning to get on the scoreboard after that lead off hit and hardly order coming up right behind them. This is where they need to get going. Though Chris through the early stages he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch account. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. Missed with a change up and the count one and two. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens. Here’s a two- two. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. spoils that one and it remains two and two. Good job to fight that one off. [Music] And that’s way high. Three and two now. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. Ground ball right side could be two. Glove flip for one and they get him easily in first. It’s a double play. Really nice double play turn right there. And it all started with that sweet glove flip on the feed to second. You know, these middle infielders, they spend a lot of time honing that glove work, so it just becomes like second nature. I think you also have to have a really good glove that’s broken in that’s not too large so that you can have a feel for that baseball and be able to flip it like you’re bare-handed. Dela Cruz stands in here, takes ball one low, the 10 just off the outside edge. He looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. Finish. Top of the third. No score. [Music] That’s towards center. Waters, pulls it down and he makes the catch. And that is that one hit in the inning, but nothing more than that. We move on to the bottom of inning number three. No score. Bottom of the inning. Drew Waters stands in. the center fielder, Drew Waters. And that is in for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. Next offering is fouled back. Check swing. No appeal. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And that’s ball two. Hit on the ground to short. Slings to first. Lead off hitter gone in the third. Good fade and sinking action in that change up. Got that hitter to roll over. Michael Massie. So digging in, Michael Massie. First offering and it just misses. And another ball. [Applause] Two balls, one strike [Music] on the ground right side and that one handled and two straight set down to begin the bottom of the third. Batting n the catcher Freddy Furby. Here’s the catcher to hit. Freddy Furbine swings and blasts one deep to left center. This one could be trouble and that’s going to roll to the wall and he starts his afternoon off right with a double. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. pretty much just a textbook double into the gap and when you can drop one in there between the outfielders, you know you’re making the turn at first. Just an excellent swing. So the Royals batting order turns over and to the plate for Kansas City. Jonathan India flyed out his first time. Foul ball there. Well, they’re looking to get on the board first here after that clutch two out double made this inning interesting. Off the mark there and the count is one and one. Runner at second. Two down here in the last half of the third. Fast ball for a strike. [Music] struck him out looking. Royals leave one and we’re still knotted at zero. And welcome back to the ballpark. And here is Austin Hayes. first pitch and he just misses. Well, these Reds as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see. But I think they have to. And that one missing low. Two balls, one strike. [Music] fouls one off. Two and two. And that’s outside. Fouls it back with two strikes. and a 3-2. Fights it off. He’ll see [Applause] another swing and a ball lifted left field. Massie right there to make the grab. And there’s one down. The left fielder number two, Gavin And now it’s Gavin Lux. Worked a walk in his first trip to the plate. Just missed. Fourth inning underway. No score. Swing and a drive deep right field going back. Stretches out and holds it in. It’s a really good swing. He just didn’t get quite enough of it to beat the wind. It’s blowing in from right field right now. Spencer Ste. And here’s the first baseman, Spencer Steer. That’s in there. Going one. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. Usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. And it’s even up. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. Swung on. Belted. And that should be extra bases around first and hustling for second in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. Couple of hits in a row for him here. Fast ball pretty much middle middle and that’s what you fall asleep dreaming about as a hitter. So no surprise he put a great swing on it. Now let’s see if they can put up the first run of the game. Will Benson digs in now. Struck out swinging his first time. Ball one there. The one and there’s a foul ball. Two outs and one in scoring position. The one-1 is fouled off. finish him. He goes down looking. So, one left for Cincinnati and we are still scoreless. And we’re back. Bottom of the fourth one now for Kansas City. Bobby Wit Jr. Witz Jr. shortened a bunt and missed it. It’s 0 and one. Tried to bunt for a hit right there. And you can tell he’s trying to get something, anything going offensively. Let’s go. Let’s go. Let’s go. Foul ball still 0 and [Music] two. Line drive rip down the left side towards the left field corner. Makes the turn and heads for second. and he’s got a leadoff double. Really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. He got a pitch he could get to out front, kept his bat through the ball and didn’t pull off or roll his hands over and that allowed him to rip that ball down the line for the double. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. And now the first baseman, Vinnie Pasquantino. He’s 0 for one. In there for strike one. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Hard hit right side. Gets it to first. One out in the bottom of the fourth. Not a bad outcome in that spot. The runner moves up to third and now they have a chance of driving. They go ahead and run. It’s not a knock, but at the end of the day, it’s a good at bat. And now it’s Salvador Perez to the plate. He struck out swinging at his first at bat. And downstairs, a runner at third with less than two outs. This is the guy that usually comes through in these spots. right through there for a strike. Whit stands a third with one gone in the [Applause] inning. Oh, [Applause] that’s inside. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here, the middle of the order hitter up, runner in scoring position. He’s got to a way to throw a quality strike. Swing and a miss. Three balls, two strikes. Got him looking. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. Oh, that was such a great opportunity to grab the lead. You have the infield back. All you got to do is just put the ball in play on the ground and you drive across a run. That’s a frustrating outcome for the hitter. Now still have a chance, but it’s probably going to take a clutch hit with two outs. Mike El Garcia now at the plate. Struck out swinging his first time. That one missed. [Applause] Two outs with a runner at third. [Applause] Fouled off down the right side. [Music] Swing and a miss. Here they count. One and two. Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to expand the zone. He’s capable of going out there and doing damage with it. The flip to the pitcher covering and he has thrown four shut out innings. So they work around to lead off double. We’ve played four. We’re tied nothing. Nothing. Back here at Kaufman Stadium. Top five. John Shabi with Chris Singleton. And leading it off, Tyler Stevenson. Stevenson Walka back to work outside low and that is ball one. Bullpin action for the Royals. Michael Lorenzan the hardth throwing righty is up and loosening. Clark getting loose as well. [Applause] One, two now. Just misses the mark outside the zone. Really good take, especially with two strikes. [Music] And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it [Applause] again and he grounds one to the right side. India sends it to first and the lead offense set down in their half of the fifth. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution in now for the Reds. Matt Mlan. Mlan measures 5’8 in 25 years old. A former first round pick in 2021. That to right. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. Out number two. Now batting the center fielder TJ. So the lineup flips over TJ Fredel the next to hit for the Reds. one for two and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. And that’s in the dirt. There’s the strike of the knees. One and two. All tied up and we’re in the top of the fifth. Next offering misses down and away on the ground to third. And that is that. Reds down in order still no score. Back here in Kansas City, ready to go for the last half of the and now the right fielder Mark Kenna. Kenna. Fast in for a strike. 0 and one. Well, these Royals from what we’ve seen, I think it’s fair to wonder if they’ve been too patient at the plate. Sometimes it’s a good thing, but today they’re continuing to fall behind. And that’s got extra bases written all over it. safe at second with a leadoff double. That pretty much split the zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them [Applause] pay. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Now it’s the switchhitting outfielder Drew Waters. And that is out of play. [Music] Kenna leads off second with nobody out. [Applause] And that one fouled off. Got him looking. Not what you’re looking for after the leadoff double. A strikeout and there’s one away. So up next, Michael Massie rolled out to second in his first at [Applause] Next offering is down low. One out and a runner at second. Last half of inning number five. Eight. keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Fights that one away. Still one and two. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Man at second. That one down the line. And it goes just foul. swinging in a line drive. Base hit it to left field. Fires to the plate. Save in comes the run from second. On the board first, it’s one. A perfect example right there. That plate discipline, it pays off. The deeper he gets into account, the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle. One down. And next up for the Royals, Freddy Forbine doubled his first time. Runner on the go. Ground ball right side and that’s a base hit. They’ll throw to third in there. First pitch swing in went up there with a plan to be aggressive. Not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play. That’s a team at bat right there. Nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep. Back to the top of the lineup. Here’s the second baseman, Jonathan India. Goal for two in this one. Fast for a strike. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. That one finds the zone and it’s 0 and two. Big pitch right here. He’s going to try to make a pitch that’s going to produce a strike out or a ground ball double play. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Make it seven strikeouts for him. Well, that bat seemed to be over as soon as it started. Three pitch strike out. You got to be better at the plate right there at least to foul something off. Extend that at bat. So, two down now and here is Bobby Whit Jr. This guy is one of the best athletes in the sport. Fouled off. He was late. [Music] Two outs. Swinging a foul out of play. [Applause] That’s to third. They get the force. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. But the RBI single pushes across a run. It’s now one- nothing. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. We’re back and they make a change to start the sixth. The new pitcher, Michael Lorenzo, coming on to face a righty here and he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those match ups. Here’s the third baseman, Santiago Espantiago Esparol. [Applause] that catches the zone for a strike and it’s all and one [Applause] [Applause] That one to first. Fair ball. Still able to come through behind in the count right there. He was definitely late on that pitch, but he didn’t get beat. Got the bat on plane and just kept his hands tight to shoot it down the first baseline for the knock. No outs. runner at first and now the shorts stop. Ellie Dea Cruz swing and a miss at strike one. 0 and one with the go ahead run at the plate. And we’re the top half of the sixth and that’s way high and one and [Music] [Applause] one. The shorts stop takes the ball. Two one with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right [Applause] here. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Very frustrating right there as a speedy potential base runner when for two strikes you just struggle to put the ball in play. You don’t even have to get a hit at that point. You can help your team just by reaching on an air, but some way you got to find a way to shorten up the swing and put the ball in play next time. And now it’s Austin [Applause] Haynes. Far off foul. The 01 tapped at the plate, but it’s a foul ball. Espion the runner at first with one gone of the inning. That’s off the mark and it’s one and two. The guy at the plate could recognize Slider out of the hand. didn’t stay in the tunnel very long in terms of depth and perception. He knew right away it was an off speed pitch just off the outside edge. Two balls, two strikes. That’s a really good take to short. Could be two to Indian at second for one. Wide throw pulls him off the bag and the inning still alive. Well, they had the chance at turning two right there, but I don’t think he got a good grip on the ball as he tried to transfer from glove to throwing hand. They say you can’t assume a double play. I beg to differ at the big league level, but it’s going to be ruled as a fieldielder’s choice. So, digging in, Gavin Lux. He’s 0 for one. There’s the strike. 95 of that one. hit pretty well in the air out to center and that’ll do it. So, they can’t do anything with the leadoff single there. Part of the order 345 coming up, it’s the Royals one and the Reds nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark where we go bottom six and to the play for Kansas City. Vinnie Pascantino and first offering is fouled off. All one. He swings and fouls one off. Got him looking. Strike out number eight. A little bit of a questionable call on that fast ball right there. to miss off the outside just a little bit according to the electronic strike zone. But that’s the type of location where you kind of have to understand that it’s close enough to where you don’t want to put the fate of your bat in the hands of the umpire. He did and he got burned. Now it’s going to be Salvador Perez. That one finds the corner. That’s strike one. One down. Base is empty. And that skips into the one ball, two strikes. That’s a strike out. Good looking sweeper there. third time he struck out in this one and definitely an individual performance you want to flush. He just hasn’t looked very comfortable up there. Just one of those days. But when you’re still winning the ball game, at least you can focus on doing your part to maintain that lead and getting that W. Now pitching for Nick Martinez comes on now. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. So up now for Kansas City, Mikel Garcia. And that one fouled off. Two down, nobody on here in the bottom of the six. This one in the air. Steer makes the grab and that’ll end the inning. Nothing doing for the Royals, but they’re on top one- nothing. And we’re back now. Here is Spencer Steer. Spencer Steer. Pitch misses there and it’s one and0. Swing and a miss as he was late that time. One. Ooh, Baya. You got to remember to take the donut off the bat, partner. [Applause] Rolled softly, but that goes foul. looking to get the tying run on base side with the breaking ball. [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] and he hits a ground ball right side. India tosses to first and they get the leadoff hitter in the seventh. That play won’t be trending on social media later on, but it’s still important to execute it to perfection. This game is a lot harder than it looks, partner. Now it’s the right fielder Will Benson who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Hard hit left side. Whit over to first and two away to start the seven. Those plays can be tricky. They’re routine, but that doesn’t mean it’s always going to be smooth. He delivered a good play right there. And now Tyler Stevenson. Fast for a strike. That one misses and it’s one and one. One ball, one strike. [Music] He had a foul ball. Two balls, two strikes to count with two outs. Trying to hold a one-run lead here in the top half of inning number seven. And it’s filled up. Matt Mlan in the OD circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact [Music] here. Three and two now. Battling here as he fouls it away. The kick, the 3-2, gets a piece and stays alive. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. Two down. Nobody on. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Grinding AB right here. About to see pitch number 10. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Two outs and the tying run is on base. Man, that’s a tough one to take on the full count, but I guess he saw it really well. It’s a really nice plate appearance. And the Royals manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make the move. Michael Lorenzan departs and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. Now pitching for new pitcher in the game for the Royals, John Shriber. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. And ready to hit now for Cincinnati. Matt Mlan line drive and that should be extra bases. Stevenson around second headed for the plate. He will score and the Reds tie it up. Love how he let that ball travel. Trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. So the go ahead run is into score. He gets the intentional walk here and now a force at any base with two gone. The third baseman number four Santiago. Next for Cincinnati, Santiago Espino. Let’s go [Applause] and fouled off. [Music] Action in the pen down there. Taylor clock preparing to come on if needed. Sera also getting ready. [Applause] Two on, two outs. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two. [Applause] That’s a ball. tried to attack with a sweeper. One ball, two strikes count. That’s off the inside corner and it’s two and two. First and second, two down. [Applause] [Applause] stays alive. 2-2 now. At this point in the game, you cannot issue free passes. He’s going to have to challenge this hitter. Hitter’s got to be ready to swing it. Ellie Dea Cruz in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. [Applause] Swinging a foul ball at the plate. They’ll do it again. [Applause] on the ground. India throws to first in time. That ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. Runscoring double here for the Reds. All even at one a piece. You’re dialed into the show. Set for the last half of the seventh. And to the plate for Kansas City, Mark Cana. That one finds the zone. Strike one. Activity in the bullpen. Luis May up and throwing for Terry Francona. Rogers, a left-hander, also throwing strike two. No balls. Two strikes. Fast ball is outside. [Applause] Stop him out looking with the offsp speed stuff. Drew Waters steps in for the Royals. Drew Waters. And that one hit to first. He takes it on his own. Two up, two down. Now batting left fielder Michael Massie. Here’s the left fielder, Michael Massie. That clips the corner, man. I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. That one off the mark and the count even one and one. [Music] Swing and a pop off in foul ground. Espenol makes the catch and that is the third out of the inning. Royals bats are quiet there. Still tied 1-1. back here at Kaufman Stadium. And now Ellie de la Cruz for the Reds. The short stop Ellie de la Cruz [Applause] Shriber back to work inside corner for a strike. 0 and one. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Carlos Estz, the closer of the staff, is throwing. [Applause] Hit hard but foul off to the left. The O2 and a foul ball. He stays alive. [Applause] That misses. Now one and two. Smoked on the ground to second. India over to first in time. Lead off man is out here in the eighth. The batter the designated hitter. Austin Austin Hayes the next to hit 0 for three in this one. That one finds the zone. Strike one. Swings and misses at the pitch off the play. Base is empty, one away, and we’re in the top of the eighth. Swing and a miss. That’s a strike out. Went back to the sweeper and it was effective. He’s really good at hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him fooled. Gavin Lux, the next to hit for the Reds. Swings through that one for strike one. 0 and one. [Music] That misses the zone. One and one. That’s down and in. [Music] Next one misses. Now three and one. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. Line to left and that’s a fair ball. Now he’ll turn for second in with a double and the go-ahad runs at second with two out. Well, patience and discipline paid off right there as he got into an advantage count. That was a thing of beauty. He may have been a little behind the pitch, but by getting that barrel into the hitting zone early on in the swing, he was able to meet it and still shoot a line drive down the line and left. Now, a huge bat in this game coming up. Spencer Steer the next to hit for the Reds. Went with the sweeper for the strike. [Applause] swing a miss and it is 0 and two. Well, you can’t expect to get a great pitch to hit with an open base and a runner on second. He’s going to have to really tighten up his sights here. Make sure that he can barrel up the ball. And that one is downstairs. One and two count. Two down. Go ahead. Run in scoring position. [Applause] Next offering is downstairs. He’s trying to stay down in the zone, but the hitter just will not chase. Now back in a two- two count. He’s going to have to go to something else to get him out. Inside full count now. Will Benson in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Chases that one out of the zone. That’s the third out. Well, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job getting out of the jam. back here in Kansas City. Bottom of the eighth. Here’s the catcher. Freddy Fine. Swings and misses. 0 and one. 01’s the count. Down on Hammer, but pulled foul. [Applause] Good eye in that spot. That one called just inside, I think, and on the mound. He’s trying to get a little bit of an explanation. Doesn’t seem to be too bothered by it, though. But he clearly thought it clipped the corner. [Applause] got him. One out. Yeah, that’s a tough pitch to stay on. You don’t want to get beat inside. And as you see that pitch continue to run away from you, by the time it’s in the catcher mid, you think it’s a ball off the plate away. Jonathan Indie at the plate and he pumps it a strike. [Music] [Applause] And that is downstairs. Two balls in a strike headed towards the corner. And that’s a foul ball. [Applause] Still two and two after the foul ball. One down. Base is empty. Bobby Whit Jr. in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] Good played appearance there. Able to take the walk. The batter number seven. Substitution now at first base on the run for the Royals. Dyrone Blanco, Bobby Whit Jr. steps in for the Royals. One for [Applause] three. Check on the runner. And he’s back in on a dive and that’s off the inside edge. One and0. This is one of those situations the infielders have to pre-plan and understand that the ball’s got to be hit extremely hard right at them if they’re going to have a chance to go for a double play. that one at the knees for a strike. That’s a great take right there. Even though it’s a strike with the situation, runner on first base, you want to keep the ball off the ground and you swing at that pitch, most likely you roll into a double play. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] This one in the air center field. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s two down. The first baseman number nine, Vinnie Pasquantino. And next up for the Royals, Vinnie Pasquantino 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. [Applause] Fast for a strike. Well, if he’s going to steal second, you want him to go early in the count. That way he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate. Go ahead and get it. Run around to go and that is out of play. Two gone. The possible go ahead run at first. and he chases that one. That K is his third of the game. So, one left for Kansas City. Score remains deadlocked at one. Now pitching through. And on the mound is the closer Carlos Estz. And as relievers go, he’s not a big strikeout guy. Tries to force weak contact. So command and execution are huge for him. Nick Loftton comes on defensively now as he takes over as the new second baseman number 12. And now the right fielder Will Benson [Applause] swinging a miss. It’s 0 and one. I say that stayed in the tunnel for a long time. No chance of even fouling it off. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. Gosh, a little late on that breaking ball. I don’t think he recognized it out of the hand. Just a little tardy. Going to have to regroup here. And a swing miss and a strike out for the first out here in the ninth. dominating strike out there on just three pitches. And that’s what a good power pitcher can do to you. But he’s hitting his spots, filling up the strike zone. Sometimes he bats over before it really begins. Here’s the Red’s catcher, Tyler Stevenson. That’s in for a strike. [Applause] late on that fast ball. Well, so many hard throwing relievers in the game these days. You would think that hitters have made the adjustment, but I don’t know if you ever get used to it. Just pumping gas out of the bullpen. So hard to play catchup. That one is upstairs. I don’t like to say he wasted a pitch. I think that was a purpose pitch. Change the eye level. Have him look up. Now go back exactly where you want to go. Ball tied up. You’re at the top of the ninth. Next pitch downstairs and it’s two and two. Three and two. Matt Mlan in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] Ball four. He walked in and that keeps things going. Well, a breaking ball in that 3-2 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. just couldn’t find the strike zone. Go ahead run on base. Matt Mlan getting ready to hit and ball one. Next pitch is outside. And he chases a high fast there. Wow. Good luck catching up to that one. [Applause] Swinging a foul out of play. One away. Tie game. Go ahead run stands at first. Pulls the string with the change up. Struck him out. Next to hit TJ Fredel, known for his late inning heroics. And that one is in for a strike. And I know you want to be patient as a hitter, but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight. And he got one right there. But let the bat on his shoulder. Swing at a ball lifted to center field. And that’s the third out. So it’s no runs, no hits, no errors, and one left. Onto the bottom of inning number nine. 456 coming up. All tied 1-1. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Emilio Pagan. Should be a good first match up for him here. He’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season. They’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him up. Perez swings through it for strike one. He’s had a tough day at the plate. Three strikeouts already. It’s hard not to think negative, but you got to find a way to somehow center up the baseball and put it in play. Here comes the one. And that one just missed off the outside edge. [Applause] spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another [Music] [Applause] to the right side, takes it himself. One out, bottom of the ninth. Now batting the third baseman, Mel Garcia. Now the third baseman, Mikel Garcia. [Applause] First pitch just misses to the right side. Fires over to first and that quickly right fielder Mark Kenna. Now it’s the right fielder Mark Cana. [Applause] close but called a ball and that’s ball one. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. [Applause] That one finds the corner and a count one and one. The one-1 is fouled off. [Applause] Trying to send this to extra innings. Fouls it off. Still one and two. [Applause] This one in the air. Dela Cruz and he makes the catch and that is that. KC down in order. Score remains tied 1-1. And welcome back to the ballpark. Now the number two hitter, Santiago Espino, man at second, nobody out. Chris, certainly one of the things in his head is trying to get the runner over. Yeah, the way that we see the game played today though, guys are not sacrificing as much just to get that runner across. They’re really looking at doing damage. Slugging is the name of the game. And that one fouled off. Yeah, I think part of that goes into it’s just so hard to come up with hits in today’s game. Starters don’t go deep and so hitters are seeing multiple pitchers every night and that makes it more challenging just to come up with a single. Next pitch is downstairs. Ellie Dea Cruz in the ODX circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. The 3-1 and that one fouled off man at second. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. Ellie De Cruz next to him for the Reds. Third baseman playing on the edge of the grass looking for the sack bunt. [Applause] Headed towards the corner and that’s a fair ball. The run scores from second. Cut off. Throw to third and he’s out. Absolutely perfect execution of a relay right there to cut him down at third. He probably should have shut it down at second base and been happy with the double, but it took a great play to get him. You just have to tip your cap. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Austin Hayes. 0 for four. Two ground outs, a fly out, and a [Applause] strikeout. Ripped to short, whips it to first. Out number three. So, it’s one run, one hit, no errors, no one left. Last chance to even things up. We head to the bottom of inning number 10. It’s the Reds two and the Royals won. And we’re back. Digging in is the switch inning outfielder Waters the center fielder Drew Waters [Applause] first pitch misses in today’s game outs are valuable so guys aren’t just willing to give themselves up to advance a runner. They’re trying to drive him in as well in the process. So I don’t expect him to shorten up and just try to hit behind the runner here. Late swing, fouled to the left. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. So the tying run at second. Tap foul at the plate. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. Squirts away a little bit. Well done behind the dish. In the dirt. Nice job behind the plate there. Foul ball and it remains a full count. Ball four. He walked in and that’ll keep the line moving. Well, he took his chance at getting him to chase right there, but first base open walked. Not a bad thing. He set up a double play opportunity if he can induce a ground ball. Now the left fielder, Michael Massie. [Applause] Nobody out. Both the tying and winning runs on base. Puts a bunt down. Espol in plenty of time to first runners advance on a good sack fun. The catcher number 34 Freddy Freddy. So up now for Kansas City. Freddy Fine. Golden opportunity right here. [Applause] delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. I think ultimately you want to tie him up, get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. Close but called a ball. One ball, one strike. Home plate umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. [Applause] Squirts away a little bit. Nothing happening on the bases though. A oneun lead. The home team trying to pull it out. [Applause] That one’s in there. And that’s strike two. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open. Out towards left center. Hamson sizing this one up. Makes the grab. Runner tags from third. Now a relay to the plate and he’s safe. Tie ball game. There you go. Nice little RBI there. It’s a great at bat. Got the job done. Nick Loftton will hit next trying to pick up his first knock in the big leagues. Loftton just missed. [Applause] [Applause] And that is cut out and missed. And a count one and one. Winning run in scoring position with two away. [Applause] That one missing inside. [Applause] Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. [Applause] The winning run on second base and it remains two and [Applause] two and a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball. So they scratch across a run here on no hits, no errors, and a man left. On to inning number 11. We go. We are tied 2-2. Now pitching. Back now. We’re in extras and there’s a new arm on the mound. Anel Sarah. Well, he’s been hit pretty hard at times this season as you see with the big erra. So this is an important outing for him to get on the right track. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position. Now it’s the veteran outfielder Garrett Hans entered the game as a pinch runner. First played appearance for him here. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. It gets down a base hit. Had a good start to the inning into second with a double. And they’ve got something brewing now. Well, that’s how you respond. Lean off man comes up gets into scoring position. Now, there are several ways that they can get this run across. Go ahead run on base in now for the Reds. Spencer Steer on the ground to third and it stays fair. Hey scores and they’ve got the lead in extra innings. Just a clutch at bat right there. Big time swing when this team really needed it. Turned on it nicely. Definitely a little out in front of the pitch, but he didn’t hook around it too much and was able to keep it fair down the line. So, runners at the corners, nobody out. Will Benson the next to hit for the Reds. Ground ball to the right side and it gets by him. runner from third comes across and it’s a two-run lead in extra innings. Couple of singles back to back. He kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit, but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock. And you’ll take that anytime you can get him to find a hole. And the Royals manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make the move. Anel Serpa won’t go any further. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Now pitching for the So the Royals bring on a new arm. Taylor Clark [Applause] Taylor and ready to hit now for Cincinnati. Tyler Stevenson [Applause] and that one upstairs. Ball one. No outs. Runners at first and second. [Applause] And that’s downstairs and outside. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. [Music] [Applause] That’s inside. And now three balls and a strike. Yeah, there’s the strike. Well, it looks like he’s wanting to work the upper part of the strike. So, what does that mean? Top hand better be working for the hitters. Adjust that side a little bit. Give yourself a chance to hit. and down on strikes and one away. Oh, he throws him with the change up right there and I think he was so geared up for fast ball once he recognized that it was off speed, he just wasn’t able to make an adjustment. So, a really good strike out and pitcher just won the battle. swing and a ball driven pretty well out towards left center. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. Two-way down at the plate. TJ Fel he’s got a history of coming through into big spots. I know I like to talk about I’m not sure whether clutch actually exists, but you look at the numbers and this guy always seems to deliver in those spots. 10. Well, I think it’s the ability to assess the situation, understanding what the pitcher has, what he’s trying to get people out on, and then being able to use the entire field. Edge of the zone, call the strike, and now it’s even one and one. If you’re a guy that can only hit to one field, then you’re really not going to be able to come through in clutch situations because pitchers are going to adjust. But because he’s able to use the entire field, that’s why he’s so successful in these situations. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. [Applause] out to center. Waters under it, makes the catch and that’ll do it. So, two runs, three hits, no errors, but two are left stranded. Last shot here as we go to the bottom of the 11th. It’s the Reds four and the Royals two. Now pitching back here in extras and a new pitcher on the mound in the bottom half of the inning. Tony Santion. And compared to a lot of other relievers, strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year. So the defense should be active. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Bobby Jr. steps in for the Royals. one for four with a double [Applause] and that drops in for a strike. No need to offer that pitch until you get to two strikes. It’s just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and away pitch. Tying run at the plate. That’s outside. [Applause] in there. And so now one and two. See if you can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading to count one, two, don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you get hurt. Fights that one away. Still one and two. [Music] man at second. The short stop takes the ball. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taking at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. Basketball is outside. Vinnie Pascantino in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact [Applause] here and ball four to a board. Well, they didn’t give him anything to hit and now with runners on first and second, they’ve set up a double play opportunity. So, not a terrible result. First and second, no outs. And to the plate for Kansas City, Vinnie Pasquantino 0 for four with three strikeouts and he’s grounded out. That’s inside and that’s ball one. [Music] [Applause] That’s a ball. [Applause] and it’s fouled off with the winning run at the plate. And here in extra [Applause] innings, next pitch, a slider that misses outside. Salvador Perez in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] And now it’s filled up. I guess you throw it that hard, you can get away with locations like that. right down the middle. But I still think it’s a dangerous pitch. Don’t want to do it again. [Applause] Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. [Applause] Fouls that off to the left. And we’ll do it again. [Applause] and a swing and a miss. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. That kind of velocity, an elevated fast, even if it’s still in the strike zone, can be tough for hitters to get on top of. And the batter now, Salvador [Applause] Perez. And a strike right through there. That one in triple digits. [Applause] And he takes one right on the black and it’s 0 and two. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches now in an 02 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a [Applause] mistake. Two on, one out. And that one is lifted in the air. Benson on his way in. Squeezes it. Two away. Now batting the third baseman, Mel Garcia. So it’s their last chance in this one. Mel Garcia digs in now. [Applause] Pitch misses and that is ball. First and second, two down. We are in the 11th. [Applause] Next offering in there for a strike and it’s one and one. [Applause] That one fouled hard the other way. The Royals down to their final strike and that’s the ball game. Well, I love the fact they didn’t quit. They had to do a little extra work tonight to secure this win, but it’s what you got to do over the course of a season if you want to be a championship ball club. And your final 42 for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
