This 49ers Calculated Risk Could Pay BIG | San Francisco 49ers

I know this one’s going to be a little bit controversial, but I love how the 49ers are playing this situation. They’re taking a calculated risk and I think it’s going to pay off big time. It’s the perfect play. What am I talking about? I’m going to tell you about it in this video. Hit subscribe if you’re looking for daily 49ers content. Appreciate all of you this Memorial Day weekend for tuning in. But let’s start off with the first things first. Okay, to set up the news, we have to set up the problem. Rohan Truckavari outlined this well for Niners Nation recently saying this. The approach that led the in the article by the way was do the 49ers really need help or still need help at wide receiver. That approach led them to trade former allpro wide receiver Debo Samuel to the commanders for a fifth round pick moving on from their star one year left on his contract. Now they head into the 2025 season with a wide receiver core led by Brandon Iayuk, Ricky Pieraw and Jawan Jennings. However, Iayuk is still recovering from a torn ACL and MCL injuries he sustained back in October, raising questions about who will be the team starters. The team did sign veteran free agent Demarcus Robinson for depth, getting some insurance on the boundary for Iayuk, but he uh but he can he could be suspended for the start of the season because of that DUI arrest last season, which by the way is super annoying on the NFL to just sit on this DUI news for all this time and then potentially do the suspension at the beginning of this season. I’m not a fan of that. that that bugs me. But anyway, whatever. Bleacher reports Mo Motton suggested that the 49ers uh as a logical spot for veteran wide out Keenan Allen. Okay. And don’t there’s a lot more to this. So like don’t just hop off if you’re like oh I don’t care about Keenan Allen who has yet to sign with the team after playing last year with the Chicago Bears. The San Francisco 49ers is what he wrote could open the season without Brennan Iayuk who is covering from a torn ACL MCL. By the way, the timeline on that is basically anywhere from he could be showing up toward the tail end of camp or he could be showing up like middle of a season. Like I’ve heard that range for a long time now. According to general manager John Lynch, Demarcus Robinson might be subject to a 3-w weekek suspension. Okay. The 49ers signed Brock Pur to a 5-year $265 million extension as running back Christian McAffrey ages. This is a a weird little turn of events he points out here, but we’ll keep going on it. San Francisco’s high paid signal caller must carry more of the offensive load and to do that he needs a full deck of pass catchers. So let me pause for just a quick second. Let’s talk about this reality. Okay, if Christian McCaffrey and we’ll talk about Christian actually in a little bit here, but if Christian McAffrey does take uh you know a step back in terms of what his production’s able to be, let’s say, okay, from 2023, okay, uh are the 49ers going to actually change their strategy? Are they actually like, “Well, now that we paid Brock Pury, our whole philosophy just changed and we’re gonna throw the ball a lot more.” That I don’t buy. Okay. Last season was an anomaly in terms of what the 49ers had to do and how they change their offensive structure. I think they’re going to have some new things, but I think it’s going to be more of a more of what we’re used to seeing from Kyle Shanahan. I don’t think Kyle Shanahan’s dropping the idea or the philosophy that he’s basically had that he in some version got from his dad. Like I don’t think he’s dropping that whole philosophy uh going forward and is just going to be throwing the ball um pocket passer all the time like that. I don’t believe that. Okay, but whatever. With the absence of Iayuk and uncertainty around Robinson, Allen would be a solid fit to round out a three receiver sets alongside Jan Jennings or Ricky Pierall. Noted, by the way, for only three games. Okay, so Demarcus Robinson, I’m really really excited about Demarcus Robinson. I think this is a really good pickup for the 49ers. I’m really disappointed about the 3-week ban potentially, but outside of that, um I I’m really excited about what he does for the 49ers. I think he he’s a good fit. Okay, so should the 49ers go in, uh he’s an upgrade over Robinson and would allow the 49ers to slowly ease Iayuk back into action. Would you want to see the 49ers move for Keenan Allen? That’s the first question. The second question raised in the article, great article from Rohan. Again, that’s not the only wide out that Motton suggested the 49ers should target. When breaking down um a move that every team should do, the Bleacher Report writer suggested San Francisco should sign Amari Cooper. Okay, this is an interesting one. So, there Cooper there. Cooper battled injuries throughout the 2024 season, which limited his production. But if he’s healthy, the 30-year-old would be a quality pickup. As Christian McCaffrey ages, Pertie must take on more of an offensive loan with his arm. Again, that’s an assumption. That that is a huge assumption, but whatever. So, San Francisco should load up on able-bodied and available receivers. I also see the world where the 49ers are saying as Christian McAffrey ages, we’re trying to replace Christian McAffrey. We’re trying to bring in guys who can start to carry the load in that regard. We have a guy in Isaac who is lightning speed for his size and can also played wide receiver, can also catch if he can stay healthy. We just got another guy, Jordan James, to come in who is not the fastest running back in the world, but is an incredible running back. So, do do uh do the 49ers just say, “Now that Christian McCaffrey is kind of aging, let’s become a different offensive system.” Again, I don’t see that. But whatever. Why do I feel like the 49ers, because I started this whole thing off by telling you that this might be controversial, but I love how the 49ers are playing this, which is of course not bringing these guys in. The 49ers have there are no reports out there that the 49ers have significant interest in either of these players and the 49ers have also had all off season if they really were interested in these players because the 49ers signed Brock Puri to a big deal all of a sudden you know writers out there start saying well the 49ers are going to need to get in another wide receiver because of the situation and I just don’t think that’s the truth I don’t see that is the case Brennan Iayuk he’s the biggest question mark because of the injury okay he’s going to come back that there’s no question about that. Will he be the same guy? Will he be able to play at that level? That is a fair question. And if you want to talk about replacing him, okay, I understand where you’re coming from. I’m not going to judge you on that one. But the idea that like because Demarcus Robinson, a veteran who’s a depth guy, but also I think could be sneaky important for the 49ers going forward. Uh when you think about a lot of things, okay, like Jawan Jennings doesn’t have a deal done. I don’t think I don’t know, but I don’t think there’s a deal coming soon. But then also last year when Jawan Jennings got his two-year extension. It just happened. Like there was not a lot of reporting and then all of a sudden Jawan Jennings got an extension. It was really cool. I think to extend Jawan Jennings right now would be very expensive because of how important he was to the 49ers last year. Um and so I I don’t know. I don’t know. This going to be interesting to see. But I think Demarcus Robinson could be sneaky important. I also have a lot of hope in uh and a lot of excitement around some of these young players. And I’m not the only one. So does Brock Pertie. Let’s talk about what Brock Pertie said. You probably have already heard this, but just in case, obviously having Ricky Pieraw, Jawan Jennings as our guys to start off the season. Obviously, we’re hoping to get BA back as soon as possible. And then Demarcus Robinson as well. But those young guys, too, man, I’m really excited about. They’ve come in with the right mindset to get better and they’re moving. We’ve got guys that can that can move, which is awesome to see, and good hands. They’re learning fast. And so for me, I’m excited for when we go 11-11, 11 on 11 in camp and get a feel for who’s who and what they can do. Jacob Cowing, his speed, his maturity. He’s had a big offseason, too. I’m really excited to keep building them up. So, the whole world will see this fall. I am so excited. So, I’m excited. Excuse me. The whole world will see this fall. Brock Pretty says about this wide receiver group, this wide receiver core. So, I am super super excited about these young guys. We got Jordan Watkins coming in there, too. You have Tariq Owens who uh you know, he’s been kicking around and the 49ers took a shot on him to develop him off the practice squad for the on the practice squad rather, I should say, for the last season. And they’re keeping him around for a reason. And so far he’s looked really good in like rookie mini camp, but it’s rookie mini camp, right? And he looked good because he knew all the drills and everything. So, we don’t really know obviously, but this is his opportunity and probably his biggest opportunity to make a football team is this upcoming season. So, uh, is it is it the right team to be on if you need if you if you need a wide receiver and you’re trying to be one of those guys? Maybe not. I I I really highly rate this wide receiver core. I love these young talents. I was very impressed. I know it was preseason, but I was very impressed by Jacob Cowing. I’m really excited to see what he can do in year two. You know how Kyle Shanahan is with wide receivers and how much time it takes for him to get comfortable with wide receivers. Ricky Pieraw, I think, was really finding his form and and had he a first- round draft pick guys. Like had he had his shot last season Oh, that was the wrong word. Had he not been had he had his opportunity, okay, and not had the tragedy, then it would have been a really good opportunity for him. And I think he would have done really well, Ricky Pierce, last year with with guys like Debo kind of getting sick and getting injured and guys like George KD being out a couple games here and there and uh obviously I being out uh the majority of the season. So um I think that there’s opportunity there for Ricky Pierce, too. And I think he’s going to he’s going to be elevated as well. It’s been fun to watch all the offseason stuff around these guys. So, where am I at? Look, I’m just telling you, you let me know what you think in the comments. Like, I don’t want to see the 49ers go for Amari Cooper. He he he’s probably in that like either he is declining at age 30 or last or last season uh is an anomaly because last season was not great for him. Obviously, there’s injury there, too. But as far as I’m concerned, like I I don’t want to see the 49ers go for a guy that could be a potential locker room issue that is a veteran. Okay, could be good, but I don’t know. Is this the kind of move we want to be making? And if you are going to sign an Amari Cooper, it better be uh I guess I guess it has to be a mercenary contract. Does he at age 30 want to sign a mercenary contract? Speaking of does he at age 30ish want to sign a mercenary contract? Keenan Allen. I don’t This is his last chance to sign anything more than a one-year contract at the age of 33. Higher ceiling than Amari Cooper. Better recent success outside of the dumpster fire over in Chicago. Uh but older and I don’t think that the reason I don’t think he’s not signed yet because I think he wants a bigger deal than what people are probably willing to get him. That’s just a feeling that I have. It’s not based on any fact. That’s just where I’m at. So, do I want to see the 49ers move for Amari Cooper, Keenan Allen? Look, good talents at times can be great players. I mean, Keenan Allen especially has had some really great seasons. No, personally, I don’t actually I don’t want to see them. And let me know if you feel differently in the comments. I love the 40 million in cap space the 49ers have, and I love that that rollover means really good things for the future of the 49ers. So, that’s just my personal opinion. I look forward to seeing what you guys think about it. instead. However, I did want to I told you I’d come back to Christian McAffrey, who PFF named uh uh the top player returning from injury in 2025 after a lost 2024 season. The 49ers star is healthy, unrestricted, and eyeing a massive comeback. Absolutely. I’ve I’ve told you guys that at least a hundred times on this channel this offseason that Christian McAffrey, everything is setting up perfectly for Christian McCaffrey to have a great season this year. Could Could Christian McCaffrey be the comeback player of the year? Well, I just looked up the stats out there. For some reason, he’s not on this list. Okay, I don’t know why. If I could get that thing to go up there. There it goes. Uh, he’s he’s for some reason not on this list right now, but let’s just look who has a better shot of being the comeback player of the year. And I’m going to skip Joe Burrow for a New York minute here. I don’t like Joe Burrow as a as an option in general, but I’m going to skip Joe Burrow for a second. Aaron Rogers, Kirk Cousins, Russell Wilson, Deshun Watson, like Okay, Deshun Watson aside for a second. You’re talking about old quarterbacks, okay, in Aaron Rogers, Kirk Cousins, Russell Wilson, who are going to have go from a bad season to an amazing season. And Russell Wilson actually for his standard in recent memory, like in the last four years, actually, I wouldn’t call that a bad season for Russell Wilson. When he was playing, he was decent for what he’s been able to produce both in Denver um and even his last season in Seattle. So, I I don’t I don’t see that. Justin Herbert, that doesn’t seem fair for him to win. It doesn’t seem fair for Joe Burrow to win. Like, I don’t like these guys as comeback players because like Joe Burrow actually played really well last season. I don’t like that as a comeback story. Christian McAffrey on the other hand, I understand the Tank Dell argument. I get that one. And similar to Christian McCaffrey, like could he come back from injury from, you know, all that he battled and have a great season? Yes, absolutely. And in my opinion, if I were the bookie right now, which I’m not, and I get it, but if I were, I would pick Christian McCaffrey to be the the best odds, the odds on favorite to win the comeback player of the year because I do think he has a really really good opportunity before anything’s happened, before training camp, before anything. I get it. I think he’s got a a really great opportunity, a bright opportunity in front of him to be great this season. Let me know what you guys think in the comments. Of course, on all of that, we are starting phase two of OTAAS tomorrow, which is super exciting. I cannot wait for it. Hope you guys are having a great uh thoughtful and and uh fun Memorial Day weekend. And I hope you guys continue to that until tomorrow when I see you then.

  1. They should change the offense meaning Shanahan only plays one back, play two or even three during the season, I would have loved to see the one, two punch of Christian and Mason last year with a little mix of the rookie Issac last season. Use your team and all your weapons and by all means BE CREATIVE!!!

  2. I'm not thrilled with getting an older receiver. I wouldn't mind getting Malachi Corley if the Jets drop him.

If we have to get an older receiver, I wouldn't mind bringing back Chris Conley. He's not the star of the other two are but he has chemistry with Purdy.

  3. LIFETIME NFL AND SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS FAN: 49ERS SHOULD SIGN FREE AGENT WR'S 1) GABE DAVIS; OR 2) KEENAN ALLEN. 49ERS ALSO NEED HELP IN THE DEFENSIVE SECONDARY. 1) FREE AGENT CB ASANTE SAMUEL JR. OR 2) S JULIAN BLACKMON! THE NINERS DEFINITELY HAVE THE CAP MONEY 💰. WHAT DO YOU THINK 🤔???
