It would mean a lot because this is something new that we’re trying to do on the farm and it’s a new practice that my dad hasn’t done. So, I just want to see the sustainability that it would have throughout time. What does a partnership with GRP to make your farm more sustainable mean to you? Oh, it means it means a lot for us because it, like I said, it’ll just help longevity and it’ll help with everything for us. And also, it does help that there is an incentive base to it because it’s like, oh, try a new practice, see how it works. Doesn’t work, then you can try something new. And then it just it’ll just help in that aspect. With Brett Odin, this is Steve Stewart for Globally Responsible Production, a mission that matters. Hi, this is Royals manager Matt Petero. My family and I had always considered a road trip in an RV, but it was because of the great people at Trailside RV Center in Green Valley that it became a reality. It was our first time in an RV, and Steve, Brian, and Michael at Trailside RV Center went far above and beyond to make my family’s vacation one that we will never forget. Memorial Day baseball at Kaufman Stadium and with it game one of a three-game series between the Kansas City Royals and the Cincinnati Reds. Glad you’re with us today. Hope you’re staying dry. The Royals are back home after a 500 road trip and through the first third of the season, the first 54 games this year. The Royals are 29 and 25. Fourth place in the American League Central, five games back of the first place Detroit Tigers. If you look at the AL Central standings though through the first third of the season, well, there are four teams in the American League Central in playoff position. The Tigers as the division leaders and then the Guardians, Twins, and Royals all occupy wildcard spots. Meanwhile, in the other central division, in the National League Central, the Cincinnati Reds are tied for third. They’re six and a half games back of the first place Chicago Cubs, who they just played this past weekend in Cincinnati. The Reds lost two out of three to the Cubs this past weekend. And so, the Reds entered today at 26 and 28 overall this season. On the mound for the Royals, it’s right-hander Michael Lorenzan, who began his career with the Cincinnati Reds, drafted by them 38th overall back in 2013. On the other side, it’s another veteran right-handed pitcher. He’s now in his second season with the Reds. Right-hander Nick Martinez. And these two, in fact, faced each other last year in the series opener between these two teams. That was in Cincinnati. And the Royals came out on top 7 to1. That pitching matchup is presented by IBW Local 124, providing the best opportunities in the electrical field of construction for over a century. Visit ibw124.org. It is a rainy afternoon in Kansas City and at Kaufman Stadium. Currently sprinkling down. Not necessarily heavy stuff. Not heavy enough to delay the game, but well, heavy enough that you feel it. And so you look around and see a lot of ponchos and umbrellas and people trying to stay dry. Though there are still several that are sitting in the elements. 65Β° while it rains at Kaufman Stadium just before first pitch. And there’s a very slight breeze coming in from right field before the start of today’s game. This afternoon, the Royals are in their powder blue tops with royals in white script at an angle across the chest. White numbers in the lower left side of the jersey and on the back and a red poppy for Memorial Day on the upper left portion of the jersey. It’s the white pants with a powder blue stripe down the side of each leg. Royal blue caps for the Royals. Interlocking white KC logo on the front and the white squatchy button. I know Denny loves that. For the Cincinnati Reds, it’s the gray jerseys tops and bottoms. Red and white stripe down the side of each leg. Cincinnati in red letters across the chest and red numbers on the back of the jersey outlined in white. TJ Fredel, who prepares to lead off, wears number 29. Michael Lorenson is ready to begin the ball game. And we’re ready for baseball at Kaufman Stadium. And now for the playbyplay. Here’s the Hall of Fame voice of the Royals, Denny Matthews. All right, Jake. And here we go with Fredel leading off against Lorenzan and Michael making his 11th start of the season looking for win number four. EJ Fredel hitting .285 with 55 hits and three home runs. So Lorenzan peeking in at Perez and the first pitch of the game is strike one on the outside corner. Jake told you that Lorenzan drafted by Cincinnati spent the first nine seasons of his career in that organization. Wine toward the right field corner. That’s a fair ball and Ray’s going to have to play it on a couple of hops. And around first on his way to second is Fredel with a leadoff double on the second pitch of the game. Well, welcome to the big leagues. John Ray out in right field in his major league debut. And well, they say, Denny, that the ball will find you. And well, it was no more true than just now with John Rae having to make the play on the carum off the right field fence in his first major league at bat on defense. And he knows all about the tricky corners of Kaufman Stadium. So now it’s Spencer Steer at the plate, right-handed batter. Lorenzan’s first pitch to him misses the strike zone. Steer hitting 223 with four home runs. outfield straight up for this right-handed batter and Lorenzan after taking a peek at second brings it home and a late swing produces a foul ball off first and well back into the seats it goes and the count one ball one strike Cincinnati coming off a weekend series against the Cubs year was 0 for three with three strikeouts in that series. Now the pitch and he hits another foul ball over on the first base side and the count Morenzan’s way. One ball, two strikes. Michael took the loss in his most recent start. That was last Tuesday in San Francisco. Loss of the season. Right-hander Dales in a swing and a miss. So another strike out for Spencer Steer who had three of those as I mentioned against the Cubs in the game yesterday. So failure to advance the runner went away for Ellie Dela Cruz originally in the Cincinnati starting lineup at shortstop but now just the D8 so they shuffled two or three of their position players. Dela Cruz switch hitter up there left-handed takes blow and inside. The wind is basically out of the southsoutheast. So blowing in from right field. Jake told you about all the rain that’s falling. Swinging a miss Cruz to even the count had one ball one strike. LA finished Cincinnati’s home stand five for 13. He went two out of five against the Cubs yesterday. Runner at second, one out, just underway. In comes the pitch and it’s just off the outside corner and two balls, one strike. Dela Cruz deep in the box, as deep as he can get. After checking the runner at second, Lorenzen brings it home and a swing and a miss. He challenged him with a fast ball up and now the count is even in two balls, two strikes. It’s a box that can barely contain it. He’s so long and gangly, 6′ 5 in tall that he really fills up the whole batter’s box with his stance. Tremendously talented. Two- two pitch is blowing inside. Pots away from Sali and over to third. Very smash that like button on this broadcast. It helps us grow and lets more fans like you discover the channel. WBC the show keeps going strong thanks to your support. The Royals are going to keep their infield back. So routine ground ball toward shortstop or second base would put the Reds in front. Lorenzan thinking strike out here. Dela Cruz no doubt thinking just make contact. And in comes the pitch. It’s way high and outside for ball four. So two on with one out for the DH. Austin Hayes hitting .324 with a half a dozen home runs. Speaking of Dela Cruz, who is now at first base, he and Bobby Wit have both been blessed with tremendous physical ability. And it would have been interesting had Dela Cruz not been scratched from his defensive position to see the head-to-head duel between the two. Well hit out into right field. Rave to his right. John makes the catch, but a run will score. So, the wild pitch has proven to be costly and Cincinnati does take a one to nothing lead as Hayes drives in his 25th run of the season. So, two down, up comes left fielder Gavin Lux. Lux a 289 batting average with 46 hits and just one home run. Runner at first, two down. Dela Cruz a conservative lead. Check swing by Lux. The pitch a strike. Couldn’t check his swing enough. Left-handed batter. Lorenzan from the belt and pitches. High fly ball center field. Isabelle moving up for it and gathers it into end the inning. So the leadoff double the wild pitch was the big item. One run, one hit. Take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager said the following. I really don’t know what to say. I’m just uh so happy I gave something. These people cheer. We all did. I mean it was a great game. Both teams played incredible. It was a great game. India Wit Pascantino coming up against right hander Nick Martinez 34 years old from Florida born in Miami to his home in Coral Gables. Two wins, five losses. Fast ball curveball change up. That’s a very good change up in his first pitch to Jonathan India. Just off the outside edge, ball one. Jonathan has reached base in 14 of his last 17 games. Going back to May the third. Right-handed pitcher, right-handed batter, and a line shot. Third baseman Lux is going to throw to first. Wasn’t sure how the Empires would ruled it, whether they ruled trap or caught on the line. So that is out number one. India hit it hard, but he is out number one. And up comes Bobby Wit Jr. Bobby hitting .299 with 63 hits and five home runs. Whit one out of five, a double in Minneapolis yesterday. He goes out to the first pitch and hits a popper on the infield. four converge on the pitcher mound and the first baseman steer says I’ll take it and does and very quickly there are two out now Nick Martinez the Cincinnati pitcher has superb control so you can expect the Royals to be swinging early he’s not going to walk many the Royals will go up swinging and that’s exactly what Indie and Wood have done and up comes Pascantino No. First pitch. He was tempted to swing, didn’t and took a strike. Eight home runs for Benny. 52 hits. Martinez rocks and deals. The breaking ball is low away. Benny, two out of four in Minnesota yesterday. And now the 1-1 pitch to him. He fouls it off third base side. Counter ball, two strikes. Martinez looking in at his catcher and now delivers the one, two to Pasquantino. And it’s low. Two balls, two strikes. Martinez when he’s on will get a lot of ground balls. We mentioned his good control. He’s also t very stingy with the home run ball. Just four home runs so far this year in 58 innings. Next one to Pascantino. Change up hit to deep right field. Benson to the fence and makes the catch. Boy, that we told you about the wind and it absolutely put the blocks on that high drive to deep right field. Benson went right to the Let’s see if we can figure out the following baseball slang term. Today’s phrase is oppo taco. Do you know what it [Music] means? Oppo taco. Tyler Stevenson with 11 hits, 62 at bats, just one home run, right-handed hitting catcher. Lorenzen’s first pitch to him is right back through the middle and out into center field. So, Stevenson goes after the first pitch and has a leadoff single. And the Reds have had their leadoff man in each of the first two innings. It took advantage of Fredel’s leadoff double to start the game, but it was a wild pitch that put him at third base where he scored on a sack fly. Up comes Will Benson’s right fielder hitting 302 with 13 runs batted in pitch from Lorenzan. Fast ball high and away. The rain appears to have lightened quite a bit since first pitch as a check swing foul ball into the net up to the third base side. One ball, one strike on Benson infield setting up looking for a ground ball and Garcia right now who’s the starting third baseman is playing shortstop. He is right in the shortstop position. Halfway between second and third. Wit’s almost directly behind second. Has pitches a little bit low. Two balls, one strike. Benson, one out of four in the game against the Cubs yesterday. Finished the home stand just one for nine. So Benson not swinging the bat all that well at the moment. Now he skies one to left. Loftton drifting to his right and Nick looking up into the raindrops makes the play and Stevenson hustles back to first and there’s one out. Not an easy catch for Nick Loftton. This is just his second career start in left field. He’s played there very sparingly and staring up into raindrops today in a left field that he’s never played in before at Kaufman Stadium. He made that look pretty comfortable. Here’s Matt Mlan, Cincinnati second baseman. First pitch to him is strike. He couldn’t check his swing. The count is 0 and one. But Jake, anybody can play left field. You remember when the old saw was the veteran player maybe a short stop all his career and he gets older and they put him at first base. Anybody can play first. Well, not true. Highf fly ball short right center. In comes Isbel and Kyle makes the play and Stevenson still at first and now they’re trimming out. It’s funny I was talking to that talking about that to Justin Warn on the Twins broadcast team. Former first baseman though he was once a catcher once upon a time he moved to first base and we were joking about how that used to be the thing. You always see players go play first, but now players will tell you, teams will tell you first base is a massively important defensive position and not easy to play. By the way, pitches inside to the number nine hitter, former Royal Garrett Hansen. One ball, no strikes. Stevenson’s at first and the pitch just a little bit outside. Two and0. And we saw yesterday and Stu talked to Taylor Clark about this how important Vinnie Pascantino was at first blocking an errant pickup throw to keep the Royals in front in the late innings. The two- pitch is a slow roller. Third tough play. Garcia scoop throw safe at first. Hansen runs well. He just rolled one slowly up the third baseline and Garcia did all he could to make the play. Made it close, but Hansen got the call from Anula, the umpire at first base. And now the Reds have runners first and second with two men out. And back to the top of the order and TJ Fredel, who doubled and scored in the first inning. Rel has driven in 19. There’s a chance to add to that total here. And in comes a pitch. And he hits a slow roller to first. Benny coming way to his right. Pitcher covers and Lorenzan takes the perfect throw from Benny Pascantino. And that’s the inning. So, two singles, but no runs. And as we go to the bottom of the second inning, Denny Salvador Perez will lead things off. And Salvi hitting .224 with 44 hits so far this season facing Nick Martinez. Martinez 61 200. The right-hander brings it in. First pitch breaking ball right on target. Strike one. Going into this game, Martinez hadn’t walked any right-handed batters, and those right-handed batters totaled 85. There’s a swing by Salvi. No contact. Pitch down almost in the dirt. The count is nothing and two on the Royals catcher. Mikel Garcia will be next. Martinez a 10game winner for the Reds last year. He went 10 and seven with an erra of 3.10 in 16 starts in the 2024 season. Salvi groundsman Hamson at third set throws and out at first. Not a great throw steer. The first baseman had to keep his foot on the edge of the base and reach as far as he could toward right field. So Mson hooking his throw a little bit made it a tough play for Steer but Steer was able to handle it. That brings up Garcia and Kel Garcia hitting 311 and a strike call. the balls one strike. This pitch off speed low and away didn’t count even 1-1. Cincinnati just before the game moved Dela Cruz off of shortstop and they put Hamson who was to start at third to short. Locks came from the outfield and it was he at third who made the air and throw a little tapper back to the bound. Easy out there’s Mel Garcia. Two up, two down. So Martinez has retired the first five. That brings up John Rae making his major league debut. He’s the fourth player to make his big league debut with the Royals this season. John hits left-handed, throws left-handed, and takes strike one. The first big league pitch that he has seen. He’ll use the entire field. He’ll have occasional power. He reaches Fern pitch, rolls it slowly but foul up along the first baseline. And quickly Ra is down in the count 0 and2 at Omaha. In 44 games, John was hitting .301. He had 21 extra base hits, nine home runs. He had scored 46 runs. RBI count 25. So he’s doing very well at Triple A. Here he is in the big leagues. Went to school at Illinois State. Born in Canton but grew up in Bloomington, Normal. His pitch is a little bit low to Raven and the count’s one and two. John’s family watching his big league debut peering through the raindrops. Still raining, not quite as hard as that first pitch, but they talked about the rain lasting about one hour and that’s why they started the game on time. Two out, nobody on the one-two pitch to John Raeve. Swung on and missed. So he was after another change up. We told you Martinez had a good one and Ra found out all about it. So at the end of two, it is one to nothing to Cincinnati. Take a hack at guessing which baseball player or managers of following. I really don’t know what to say. I’m just uh so happy I gave something. These people cheer. We all did. I mean, it was a great game. Both teams played incredible. It was a great game. Freedle was at third when Hayes got him home with a sack clock. There we are. Third inning, one to nothing. And here’s Jake. All right, Danny. Thanks very much. Spencer Steer leads off for the Reds in the top of the third inning. And former Red Michael Lorenzan is back on the mound. First pitch to Steer and it’s outside for ball one. Steer struck out swinging his first time up. Lorenzan’s lone strike out so far today. He’s also issued one. Into his wind up he kicks and delivers again. Fast ball laced toward the right side and past Massie into right center field. A base hit for Steer. And so for the third time in as many innings, the Reds have the leadoff man on. As Denny told you, the Reds hashed in their first leadoff runner in TJ Fredel with a wild pitch playing a key part in that first inning. Austin Hayes had the sacrifice fly. In the second inning, Lorenzan stranded a pair. Now he faces Ellie de la Cruz with a runner on first and nobody out. Here’s the pitch. The change up low for ball one. The Royals are down one- nothing. Top of the third inning at a rainy Kaufman Stadium. It is a pretty steady rain right now. 10 pitch to De La Cruz. Hit on the ground to the left side. Darcia dives. It’s past him into left field. A base hit. And so backto back opposite field singles for the Reds. puts runners on first and second with nobody out. The Royals infield was in a shift to the right side. So Garcia was playing off the line at third, really more in the hole between third and short and Da Cruz hit the ball on the ground to straightaway shortstop. But because the infield was in a shift and wound up going between Garcia and Wit. So first and second with nobody out and now Austin Hayes a right-handed batter. Here’s the pitch swing and a pitch low. Appeal to first in Hayes went around. That’s a strike 0 and one. This is Hayes first season with the Reds. Longtime member of the Orioles. That was the team that drafted him in the third round back in 2016. Finished last year with the Phillies after he was traded. Lorenzan delivers and it’s a fast ball inside. One ball, one strike on Austin Hayes. He taps the top of each cleat with his bat, trying to knock some of the water off of it. He wipes his hands on his gray pants. He’s got no batting gloves on. Could be a little slick in the palms. The pitch chops it toward third. Garcia gets the long hop. Race to the third base bag and he’s beaten. Spencer Steer got there first with a slide. And so on a soft grounder to third with runners on first and second and nobody out. Well, the Royals don’t get any outs. But Garcia waited for the more true hop, the longer hop, and by the time he waited, he didn’t have a chance to get Hayes at first or de la Cruz at second. His only chance was at third. The Royals are challenging. Kansas City is challenging to save third base. That was the first base umpire and crew chief Ron Pulpa. So, it was a race to the bag and it looked pretty bang bang. What is it they say in Little League? The tie goes to the runner. The call of the field was taped. And it really looks like they’re getting another angle and another look. And we’re seeing it on Crown Vision now, too, that Garcia’s right foot and Steer’s right foot got to the bag pretty simultaneously. And even if Garcia’s foot got there millimeters before, that’s a tough call to overturn. There needs to be incontrovertible evidence to reverse it. Who had the longest spikes on it? Yeah, no kidding. My Steer went into the side of the third base bag. Garcia went to the top of the bag. That’s as close as it gets. And with a play like that, a call on the field usually carries the day. And the call on the field was safe. Yeah. And the Empire could have called either safe or out. And he wouldn’t have been wrong. Yeah. And either one likely would be the outcome. Mhm. Here’s Ron Culpa. Have to review. The on the field is overturned. The runner is out. He’s out. Wow. Close as it was, they saw what they needed to see to overturn it. Happy to be wrong. One away in the top of the third inning. So, Garcia wins by a spike. Runners on first and second with one out now for left-handed hitting Gavin Lux. Here’s the pitch. It’s low. One ball, no strikes. Alux, like Austin Hayes, is also in his first season as a member of the Reds. The Lux had spent his entire career with the Dodgers before this year. They drafted him with the 20th overall pick in 2016. Here’s the one pitch. Lux loops it shallow center field. Isbel darts in. Has to play on a bounce. It’s a base hit. Da Cruz rounds third. He speeds home to score. Standing RBI single for Gavin Lux and the Royals trail two nothing in the top of the third inning. Hayes went first to third on the play. Well, given how softly the ball was hit and how fast Ellie de la Cruz is, there is really no chance to get De La Cruz at the plate. And Kyle Looseell is handling a wet, slick baseball. That’s right. And it might have picked up a little bit more water after it bounced on the outfield grass. So that’s three hits this inning for the Reds. And really, how big is that overturned call now? Instead of a two-run single, it’s only one. Hunters on the corners. First pitch to Tyler Stevenson. He takes a slider kneeh high called strike. And it’s 0 and one. The Reds already have two runs on six hits so far today. The Royals do not have a base runner yet today against Nick Martinez. Here’s the pitch. Slider just outside. One ball, one strike on Tyler Stevenson. So, Lorenzan’s had to deal with a lot of traffic. And you might remember reading or hearing some of the things he said earlier this season about not feeling completely comfortable in the stretch. The 1-1 fast buzzes Stevenson inside. The count’s now two and one. Well, over the last couple of starts, Lorenzan’s made some mechanical adjustments with his delivery, specifically pitching from the stretch, and he feels much, much better pitching in that situation. Here’s the pitch. Slider flicked into right field down for a base hit. A scores from third. Lux rounds second, heads to third. Back-to-back RBI singles for the Reds. And the Royals trail 3 nothing in the top of the third inning. The Reds are putting the ball in play and finding open space. That’s already four hits in this inning and the only out was on the overturned call. Now Brian Sweeney comes out of the first base dugout to chat with Lorenzan. Tire infield joins him. Smash the like button on this broadcast. It helps us grow and lets more fans like you discover the channel WBC the show keeps going strong thanks to your support. He felt he was staying a little bit too closed and he doesn’t want to fly open either but with the torque it’s just a more aggressive rotation and that helps him stay a little bit more true. Facing Will Benson now a left-handed hitter with Brian Sweeney back in the dugout. the pitch. Fast ball outside. Ball one. Benson is 0 for one with a fly out to left field. He’s now one for his last 10. That was after really he couldn’t have started his season any hotter with the Reds. Here’s the pitch inside. Two balls, no strikes. Now Benson started the year in the Miners with the AAA Louisville Bats. Appropriately named Louisville is the home of the Louisville Slugger Museum after all. Two pitch now. Swung out and missed. Good change up and it’s two and one. But Benson got called up in the beginning of April and started off hitting 400 with five home runs. He was so good. He was the National League player of the week. His first week in the big leagues this season. Here’s the pitch outside. Three balls and one strike on Will Benson. [Music] He’s a former first round pick, 14th overall by Cleveland back in 2016. Lorenzan delivers. Benson hits it high in the air, deep right center field. Raise sprints into the gap from right, angles toward the track, reaches out and makes the catch. He spins and throws it back to second. Fly ball plenty deep enough for Gavin Lux to tag up and score from third. And the Reds have a third run in the top of the third inning. And the Royals now trail 4 nothing. Tyler Stevenson stayed put at first base. So he’s the lone base runner now with two outs. And Matt Mlan steps to the plate. Here’s the pitch and it’s a slider over the outside corner called strike. And it’s 0 and one. the sliders among other adjustments that Lorenz has made. He started throwing that more to right-handed hitters. He really wasn’t when he joined the Royals last year, nor at the beginning of this season. Here’s the pitch blowing outside with a sweeper. One ball, one strike, but he’s fine-tuned the pitch shape. He’s always tinkering and he feels that his misses with that pitch are better. not going to be perfectly placed any time, but when you can miss competitively, you can get good results. Lorenzan delivers and Mlan taps a change up back foul. One ball, two strikes on Matt Mlan. Laorenzan is a constant tinkerer, always crafting, always changing, always adjusting, always analyzing, always improving. He steps off the back of the rubber and stares Stevenson back to first. The Reds have gotten to him here in the third though and so Lorenzan will need some more adjustments for the fourth. Here’s the one two to Mlan down and away with a slider. Two balls and two strikes. 48 pitches now for Lorenzan. Not as if he’s had to throw a ton. The Reds have been pretty aggressive and gotten him early in the count for the most part. The 2-2 bounces in. Salvi scoops it up and the count’s full. Three and two. Lorenson went with another slider. Pitchers will tell you that around 15 pitches an inning is what they’d hope for on average. So through three innings about 45. Lorenzan’s only about to throw his 50th pitch. So really not far off that mark. Here’s the payoff and Mlan bounces up the middle. Goes off Lorenzan on the mound. Ricochets to third. Garcia has it but he has no play. Mlan safe at first. Stevenson moves to second. An unfortunate bounce for the Royals. And Kyle Turner comes out of the first base dugout. Royals head athletic trainer to check on Lorenzi. Needing to get to the foul line before Lorenzan shoot him away. He shoot him away after literally taking a grounder off of his shoe with his left foot planted on the front of the mound. The ball that Mlan hit went right off the inside of that cleat and caramemed up and toward third. First pitch to Garrett Hamson just outside with a slider. That’s ball one. Runners on first and second, two outs. Top of the third. Royals down four nothing. Gson had an infield hit his first time up and the pitch popped up down the first baseline passino ranges back staring into the raindrops. He circles and makes the catch in foul ground. Two steps on the warning track dirt near the dugout suite and that ends the top of the third inning. But the Reds score three runs. take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager led the following. I really don’t know what to say. I’m just uh so happy I gave something. These people cheer. Nick Loftton leads off the bottom of the third against Nick Martinez. Righty matchup. And the first pitch to Loftton. Fast ball down and in. That’s ball one. Well, Loftton made his season debut yesterday and it couldn’t have got much better. Loftton doubled in his first at bat of the year and wound up scoring the game-winning run in the 10th. Here’s the pitch. And Loftton takes a sinker knee high for a strike. It’s one and one. Loftton started in left field yesterday in Minneapolis. He’s back out in left field today. Martinez rocks and fires and Loftton lines it right to third and right at Gavin Lugs. He crouched and made the catch. One away. Second time today that a Royals leadoff man has stung one to the hot corner and Lux has been up to the task. It happened to Jonathan India back in the bottom of the first. So tough luck for Loftton. That happened yesterday too. Robbed him a couple of hits. First pitch now to Michael Massie just outside. One ball, no strikes. Massie is currently 0 for his last eight, but that was after a good series in San Francisco. Here’s the pitch. Massie hits it high in the air deep to right field, but Will Benson has a play on it. He ambles to his left, makes the catch, and quickly there are two outs. So, Nick Martinez has gone eight up and eight down so far today. He’s added one strikeout. That was John Rae in his first major league at bat. So now the bottom of the Royals lineup and Kyle Isbel who was scratched just a couple of days ago due to illness back in there today. First pitch from Martinez and Isbel pops it up shallow left center field. Hampson points to it. Austin Hayes finds it in the raindrops and the left fielder makes the catch in the gap and that ends the inning. So the Royals go down in order and do so quickly. No runs. Michael Lorenzan has gone twice through the Red’s lineup now and allowed four runs on eight hits. The Reds scored three runs on five hits just in the top of the third inning. And so Lorenzan retoses the rubber in the fourth having thrown 52 pitches and trying to make an adjustment now. Third time through this Red’s lineup between innings. The ground crew came out put some diamond dry, some dirt on the front of the mound and around the first base and home plate areas as well. It’s a little damp out there today and it’s been raining since about 30-ish minutes before first pitch and it has been coming down steadily ever since. So, really been coming down steadily for about an hour and a half now at Coffman Stadium. So, TJ Fredo leads off. He’s one for two with a double. Scored a run back in the top of the first inning. Left-handed hitter Florenzan delivers. First pitch fast ball misses high. One ball, no strikes. Lenny told you Lorenzan was originally drafted by the Cincinnati Reds. That was back in 2013. Here’s the pitch down and in. Skips all the way to the back stop. Two balls, no strikes on TJ Freedom. Lorenzan was a first round pick back in 2013 out of Cal State Fullerton, a baseball powerhouse at the collegiate level. Here’s the pitch. Fast ball just outside. Three balls, no strikes on Fredo leading off the inning. Lorenzan when he was at Cal State Fullerton, he was a two-way player. He was mostly the Titans center fielder. The pitch and it’s high for ball four. And so the top of the fourth begins with a four pitch walk. That brings up Spencer Steer who’s one for two today with a single. Lorenson was drafted as a pitcher though he has done both in his professional career. Pitched and hit that is. He delivers and steer pops it up foul out of play off the right and the count’s now 0 and one. Lorenzan made his major league debut with the Reds as a pitcher in 2015 mostly as a starter. He did get the chance to do both very briefly for a couple of seasons, most recently in 2019. He tosses over to first and Fredo dives back safely. Lorenzan, as you might be aware, is the active leader in home runs by a pitcher not named Shoi Otani. The 01 letter high sweeper called strike and it’s 0 and2 on Spencer Steer when he was at Cal State Fullerton. In addition to being a center fielder, he was also their closer. He’d run in from center field and then I’ll start lighting up the radar gun to end games. The pitch it’s high snap throw back to first tag down Fredo. Enjoying the game. Thanks for being part of the road to 100K. Still one ball and two strikes on Spencer Steer. Royals down four nothing. We’re in the top of the fourth inning. Here’s the pitch just low outside with a change up. And the count’s now two balls and two strikes. Lorenzan ultimately was with the Reds for seven seasons before signing with the Angels in 2022. He delivers. Steer pops it up foul back behind home plate out of play. Still two balls and two strikes. The following year, 2023, he was with the Tigers and he was an all-star to begin the season. Got traded to the Phillies. threw a no hitter that year in his home debut with the Phillies last year with the Rangers, traded to the Royals. You know the rest of the story. Signed back with the Royals this season. His 11th year as a big leager. The pitch down and away and the count’s full on Spencer Steer. Three balls and two strikes. Lorenzan has walked two today. He’s only walked three batters in the month of May in total entering this afternoon. He’s really become a lot more stingy with the free passes this month. Payoff pitch to Steer and he pops it up right over the pitcher mound. Michael Massie runs in from his second base position onto the grass just to the right of the mound. He makes the catch and steers out one away. Let’s pause 10 seconds for Station ID. This is the Royals baseball network. Hey, it’s Cole Rigggins and this is 965 the fan, your home for Royals baseball. Thanks for hanging out with us today. Royals down four nothing to the Reds in the top of the fourth. First pitch to Ellie de la Cruz and he waves and misses at a change up for strike one. Right now there’s a runner on first with only one out. Da Cruz is batting for the third time today. He’s walked, singled, and scored a run. Now a four-ame hitting streak for Dea Cruz. The pitch, fastball hit in the air down the left field line. Loftton ranges back, angling toward the corner. He’s under it, wobbles, and makes the catch going back to his left and he fires to second to keep Fredel honest at first. A nice grab by Nick Loftton out in left field. Again, he hasn’t spent a whole lot of time out there and it’s especially difficult today with the rain coming down. Kayla cruises out to gone in the top of the fourth and that brings up Austin Hayes. Infield shade to the left side against him. Here’s the pitch down and away. And that’s ball one. Ace had a sacrifice fly back in the first inning. Ground it into a fieldielder’s choice in the third. That was the play where Garcia beat Spencer Steer to the bag upon review. The one pitch. A cues it foul. First base side spinning toward the on deck circle. The count’s now one ball, one strike. Now, Hayes has been a hot hitter. He’s got at least one hit in 10 of his last 11 games, including each of the last four entering today. The pitch bounc straight back and it’s one and two. The Reds entered this inning with four runs on eight hits. And despite the amount of pitches that Lorenzan’s had to throw in this inning, 15 is not allowed a hit in this inning just to lead off Wong. Spin the toss to first and Fredle dives back safely. Now the one-two pitch. Ace chops it down the third baseline. Foul. Still a ball in two strikes. Went right between Michael Garcia and Red’s third base coach J.R. House. So Hayes goes back to the batters box and picks up his bat. Still no batting glove. So he gets some of the damp dirt next to the righty batter’s box and gets it in his palms. You can barely see the batter’s box now. The ground crew has added some dry dirt around it. The chalk outlines are basically gone. Batter’s box has become a suggestion. The one two again low and outside. Two balls, two strikes on Austin. Just looking down there. It’s like like sandlot baseball. Who needs a batters box? You see where the imprints of the cleats are? You get the general idea. The two- two just low and outside. Ball three. a change up that barely missed and the count’s full. Three balls and two strikes. What’s the first thing a hitter looks at when he comes to home plate? Home plate. Even with the lines, then he’ll set himself accordingly. But you can set yourself just looking at home plate like you always do when the white lines are. Yeah, you’re right. It ends with a sand lot baseball that diamond dust and drying compound that they put down. Lorenzan tosses over to first and Fredle barely gets back to the bag safely. So his gray red’s jersey is all covered in the dirt now. Half of it’s brown at this point. Still a full count on Hayes. So Fredle gets a head start at first. Payoff pitch and it’s called strike three. A slide the bottom outside corner. Perfect pitch from Michael Lorenzan to get Hayes looking and end the top of the fourth inning. First pitch fast over the inner half called strike one. Royals trail the Reds 4 nothing in the bottom of the fourth inning. Still raining at Coffman Stadium. coming down steady. Martinez rocks and fires and India takes a change up low. One ball, one strike. Well, this is the first chance that Jonathan India has had to face his former team, his original team. Royals acquired India in a trade this past off season for Brady Singer. Here’s the 1-1 blowing outside. Two balls in a strike on India. The Reds drafted India fifth overall back in 2018. And then India made his big league debut in 2021. He was the National League Rookie of the Year. Martinez delivers and India takes up and in three balls in one strike. He spent each of his first four seasons with the Reds before joining the Royals this year. Over 500 games with the Reds. Here’s the 3-1 pitch and it’s a letter high strike cutter. Now the Cal Bowl three and two on Jonathan India. Bobby Whit Junior’s on deck then Vinnie Pasquantino to follow in the top of the fourth inning. The Royals are still looking for their first base runner against right-hander Nick Martinez. Here’s the payoff pitch. India pops it up. Shallow right field. Benson sprints in toward the line and it dropped between everybody. A base hit for India. Then the Royals have their first base runner. Benson sprinted in. Steer went back from first. Matt Mlan the second baseman went out there too and it flopped right between everybody. That is a Bermuda Triangle single for Jonathan India. He’s on it first with nobody out. Yeah, that’s Benson’s play because the second baseman, Mlan, was shoved around way close to second base. He had no chance to get there. That’s got to be the right fielder all the way and he slowed down and let her drop. First pitch to Whit. It’s a change up. Kneeh high called strike and it’s 0 and one. So India is over at first. He gave Spencer Steer a loving little shove. Former teammates, good buddies. He one pitch. Whit hits it in the air deep to right center field. Benson angles into the gap. He’s there to make the catch. India started to tag from first. He draws a throw to second and he goes back to the bag. One out now in the top of the fourth inning. That brings up any passentino who nearly hit a home run. His first at bat flyed out to the very edge of the warning track up against the fence in the first inning. Royals down four nothing. Bottom of the fourth inning. Runner on first with one out. Here’s the pitch. It’s in the dirt. Ball one. So, back-to-back batters in the Royals lineup. Bobby Whit Jr., Vinnie Pasquantino. Drafted in 2019. Whit was the second overall pick. Vinnie Pascantino was drafted in the 11th round. today. In fact, the Royals have four 2019 draft picks in the starting lineup. Here’s the pitch over the outer edges strike and it’s one and one. Michael Massie was the Royals fourth round pick in 2019 and John Rae who’s making his major league debut today was the Royals fifth round pick in 2019. Pretty good draft. The 1-1 pitch. Aspantino bounces it back up the middle of bas into center field. India takes an aggressive turn at second at the third. Fredel’s throw offline and India dives in safely. A good throw from Fredel in center and India might have been out. But Fredel probably wasn’t expecting India to take the aggressive turn that he did. And like Denny told you just a couple innings ago, it’s slick out there. It’s wet. And so Freedel not only had to charge, but then he had to throw a wet baseball that enrolled on the grass. And maybe that’s what India was thinking the whole way. Runners on first and third now with one out for Salvador Perez. Yeah, you’re exactly right. And know the position of the outfielder. Where did he have to go rise after capturing the ball and setting himself to make a throw? Sometimes that alone will allow the runner to either stay at that base or take the extra. And I think India had that thing well computed as he got near second base. Chance for the Royals to get on the board. Runners on the corners. One out. First pitch to Salvi. Roll foul. Third base side. And it’s 0 and one. The Reds infield is shifted as far to the left as they’re allowed to do. Matt Mlan is playing up the middle at second base. And with Spencer Steer holding Vinnie Pascantino on at first, the entire right side of the infield is open. Martinez delivers just outside and the count’s now one and one. I wonder if people realize, Jake, how important it is for a base runner. Say you’re at first base, a base runner, and a ball’s hit to the outfield. The outfielder coming to play the ball. Does he throw left? Does he throw right? Does he have to go to his left or right? Martinez delivers and Salvi slices it up the middle. Mlan fields, steps on second, jumps and throws to first in time for the out. Inning over. Well, the Royals put runners on the corners with one out but failed to score. Moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921. Smith Clarks went into right down the line. It may go. Go crazy, folks. Go crazy. Give the cap to the ground crew that’s kept the field as dry as possible on a day where it’s been raining pretty consistently since about 30 minutes before first pitch. And Steu, it looks like it’s lightened up a little bit, but it is still wafting down from the heavens on this Memorial Day. Yeah, the ground screws a great job. Clearly, the decision was made well before first pitch. We’re just going to play through it. And that’s what the Royals and Reds are doing here. And so far, the Reds are liking the results much better than the Royals to this point in the ball game through four innings. 48-0 for Cincinnati. 02 and0 for the Royals. Royals have had just two hits. They both came in the last inning. They’re here in the fifth inning. Gavin Lux will lead off. He’s their third baseman. Left-handed hitter. He had a bloop RBI single. Scored a run in the threerun third inning in the first pitch to this left-handed batter. Mrs. High for ball. He’s one out of two today. You like that decision of starting the game with it raining lightly as opposed to sitting for four hours and watching the tarp and hoping that the rain stops. Two and0 is the pitch missed. Yeah, and it’s such a it’s such a tough decision as to, you know, looking at forecast, which can also change, but they because we knew we had more rain coming later today. Here’s the pitch hying away, and now it’s 3 and 0 and Lorenzan falling behind another hitter here. Yeah, there are a lot of decisions that go into either starting the game or keeping the tarp on. And I Excellent. is a called strike of course, Denny. And of course, you know, the managers in particular thinking about their starting pitcher and getting them started and not wanting to have it stop and all that sort of thing. So, there’s a lot lot of decisions. I’ve been told that MLB has some say in it, which I don’t really understand, but it should be like you said, home team, umpires, they’re right here. They can see what’s going on. They can read the weather forecast and see it and make the decision from there. Yeah. Feet on the ground. So, there’s a leadoff walk to Lux. Exactly what Lorenzan did not want to do. Now let off the four fourth inning. Free to let off with the walk and did not score. See if he can keep them from doing it again here. DJ Tyler Stevenson rather hits it deep to left field on the first pitch. It was up and now it’s out. Long home run to left. The second home run of the year for the right-handed hitting catcher for Cincinnati. Tyler Stevenson. And what a day he’s having. He’s now three for three and he’s driven in three runs today. The leadoff walks Lorenzan there. Two-run homer to left and a rough one for Lorenzan now as it’s 6 nothing Cincinnati in the fifth inning. And one of the other factors to keep in mind with Lorenzan today and the Royals are down 6 nothing but the Royals still have kind of a question mark for tomorrow as to who’s going to pitch. Is it a spot starter? Is it a bullpen day? And so having Lorenzan go a little bit deeper is important. Will Benson will take a strike with now the bases empty. Still nobody out. So, a couple of crooked numbers for Cincinnati. One in the first inning, but three in the third and now two in the fifth. Next one to Benson and he takes it high. Yeah, the Royals had such success last Wednesday at San Francisco with a bullpen game using six relievers. Of course, they had the day off immediately after that Thursday to rest everybody. They won that game with a bullpen day. One-1 pitch had a swing and a miss. actually got a piece but right into the mid of Salvi. So one and two on the reigning National League player of the week will Benson and the pitch and he swings grounds to the left side. Bobby to his right plays it on the backand fires back to Vinnie at first to get the out. Bobby was playing him up the middle. He was just to the left of second base playing well behind the bag. Bobby able to make that play fairly easily to get Benson. And now it’ll be Matt Mlan, their second baseman. So one down, nobody on. Yeah, tomorrow’s a big question mark. Royals wanted to get as much as they could, as much length as they could out of Lorenzan today. First pitch to right-handed hitting Mlan is a curveball that Mrs. Low for a ball. Right now Lorenzan’s gone for a third. He’s at 83 pitches. Next one is a little high. The Royals are carrying nine relievers at the moment as down a starter. Of course, Noah Cameron has filled one of those spots as both Cole Reagan and Seth Lugo are on the injured list. 20. And there’s a strike call on the inside corner. The Royals have Thursday off, but they got to figure out tomorrow whether that’s a bullpen day or do you call somebody up. Two and one on Mlan. Now the pitch, swing, and a one hopper to Bobby at short right to him. Sets his feet, fires across the fitting, and there’s the second out. So, a couple of 63 put outs after the two-run homer off the bat of Tyler Stevenson. And the batter will be Garrett Hamson, the former Royal. Hamson reached on an infield hit in the second inning. He’s also popped out foul to former teammate Vinnie Pascantino in foul territory. right-handed hitter. He’s playing short today. Here’s the pitch. He takes a breaking ball down and away. He didn’t play much short last year with Bobby Wood Jr., his teammate. Of course, like so many ball players and so many infielders, Hamson was a short stop for a long time growing up and he been into pro ball. He’ll take a breaking ball for a strike. Home ball, one strike on Hamson. Number nine hitter with TJ Fedel waiting to hit next for Cincinnati. Reds came in 26 and 28 on the year 1-1. And the break the ball misses inside. Cincinnati third place in the NL Central. The Cubs lead that division. That’s the team that Cincinnati just saw and we’ll see in Chicago this weekend. And the Cardinals are in second place, two back. Reds are six and a half behind the Cubs. 2-1 swing and a ball pulled up third base line. Diving attempt by Garcia to make the play. He knocks it down. Fall rolls away from him. keeps it in within reach and keeps the runner from advancing beyond first base. So, a heck of a play by Garcia to get to that ball far to his right with a dive kept it from going down the line and kept Hamson from getting an extra base hit. So, a second hit for Hamson that doesn’t leave the infield. He’s on with two down. Back to the top of the order and their center fielder TJ Fredel. F R I E DL left-handed batter got the game started off right for them with a double when he came around to score in that first inning. Here he looks at ball one. He’s also grounded out and drawn a walk today. Open stance for the left-handed batter as the light rain falls. Very light right now it appears. And the pitch and it misses a little bit upstairs. Lot of royal blue ponchos. in the crowd as the folks protect themselves from the rain and enjoy baseball on this Memorial Day. And the next one from Lorenzan swing and a little flare into shallow center and coming in and playing it on a hop will be Isbel. That’s the best he could do on that. And so backto-back base hits with two down by the nine and one hitters for Cincinnati. Hson stops at second. Here is Spencer Steer. as the Royals have action in their pen. An onel Sera begins warming up the lefty. Do you realize how good that play was that Isabelle just made? Short hopping on the grass and the ball has a tendency to skip. If that thing skips by him, he might circle the bases. Very wet day. Speaking of short stops, a long time ago when he got to college, Ky Lisb was a shortstop and plays the outfield so well. Like you say, Denny, cuz he thought as he was coming in, you could tell he thought maybe I have a chance and he realized he didn’t have a chance to catch it. He was able to play it on the short hop very, very smoothly out there in center field. Made it look easy and it wasn’t. He did. Mound visit from both Salvi and the first baseman, Vinnie Pascantino, talking it over with Michael Lorenzan, who’s had a long day on the mound. He’s at 93 pitches, six runs in already for Cincinnati on 11 hits. Couple of more base runners on now with Hampton at second, Breedle at first, and the batter is Spencer Steer who got off to a very cold start the first month or so, but since early May has really picked it up and he looks at a strike and today Spencer Steer has a base hit in his three at bats. He’s also struck out popped out. Ren trying to at least get through five. Now the 01 and it misses up and in one and one. Every starting pitcher knows obviously your job is to go out there give your team a chance to win. But when you fall behind as the Royals have one of your jobs is to give your team as much length as you can. There’s a check swing foul on a cutter from Lorenzan. Michael admits he’s a different pitcher than he was when he first came to the big league for Cincinnati. 10 years into his career now as he’s learned so much that first came up he could throw hard but that was about it. There’s a pitch fouled out of play off to the right. Wishes like so many veteran pitchers wishes he knew then what he knows now. Like Jake said he’s a tinkerer always trying to get better. He’ll no doubt do a full examination of this outing and try to be better next time and get better results. Here’s the one-two and that one is fouled back by right-handed hitting Spencer Steer. 6 nothing Cincinnati here in the top of the fifth. This is the only day game of the series. We have night games tomorrow and Wednesday. Both will be at 640. Then this weekend, the Detroit Tigers will be in town. The first place team in the Central. They’ve already won today. They beat the Giants today 3 to one. One two pitch and a misses low. Two and two on Spencer Steer. Cincinnati has been scoring every other inning in this game. One in the first, three in the third, two here in the fifth. Now the 2-2 and it misses outside and it’s a full count with two down and runners at first and second. So Hamson will be off with a pitch from second base and Fredle will be off from first base. Three and two on Steer and the pitch and he swings and he fouls it off. Will do it again. And the pitch count continues to climb for Lorenzan who’s at 101 as Serpa’s been warming up and no doubt the Royals want to see him get one more out here. Haven’t seen all that many bad swings from the Reds today. They have not been fooled by what Lorenzan’s been trying. Another 3-2 on the way and a swing and a high popper shallow right. Michael Massie the second baseman out behind Benny Pascantino will make the catch in the outfield grass and that’ll take care of Cincinnati. But they put up two more on the Tyler Stevenson homer and we go to the bottom of the fifth inning. 6 nothing Reds. It’s employee pricing. He’s been on a tear. 375 on the road trip, nine out of 24. That’s after he hit 400 in the St. Louis series last time the Royals were home and the first pitch to him is it called strike. Thanks for being part of the road to 100k. And over to make the catch in right field is their right fielder, Will Benson. And so no hit yet for Garcia. And to the plate, will step John Rave who struck out in his first major league advanty Memorial Day facing Nick Martinez. Left-handed batter waits. First pitch taken low for a ball from John Raeve. He had a very good spring for the Royals. Big league spring training at 371 and having a great year at Omaha. 1 and0. Martinez delivers. There’s a called strike curve from the righty. Martinez tired the first nine Royals he faced. He’s allowed just two hits and no runs. And there’s a fast ball, a called strike, 92 mph. He gets ahead of this rookie. One ball, two strikes. John Rave leading the minor leagues. He scored 46 runs for Omaha. He’s been on base like crazy and coming in a lot from third. Here’s the one-two and a breaking ball bounces in front of the plate. It’s blocked by Tyler Stevenson. And a new baseball on this wet day for 61 34y old right-hander Nick Martinez. JJ Pakola said this morning that well played himself into consideration for the opening day roster and he has played his way onto this roster now in late May. Two balls, two strikes, the pitch and a swing and he swats a foul out of play off to the left off the netting above the Cincinnati dugout. Two and two on Rave. Now the pitch and it’s upstairs. It’s three and two the count. We gladly take a walk. One thing the Royals need when you’re down 6 nothing is base runners. He’s up there with nobody on, one out here in the bottom of the fifth. Don Rave waits payoff pitch and a swing and a miss and he strikes him out on the change. Same pitch with which he struck him out in the second inning. So two up, two down here in the Royals fifth inning and the batter will be Nick Loftton. Hey, I’ll tell you what, that’s the most curveball looking change up I think I’ve ever seen. The way that thing tumbles out of Nick Martinez’s hand, it looks like a curveball the whole way. Now Loftton, he lined out to third his first time up. Right-handed hitter and Nick will swing and bounce the first pitch foul up the third base side. Yesterday, Nick Loftton doubled in the second inning. Scored the winning run as that placed runner in the 10th inning as he began the 10th inning as the runner at second base. So he got to score the go ahead run. Turned out to be the winning run. There’s an offspe pitch. It’s a called strike and it’s 0 and2 now on Loftton. Nobody on two down here in the bottom of the fifth inning. Martinez comes set and here comes the O2 and a swing. Fly ball right center. A couple of Reds going after it. It’ll be the center fielder running it down. TJ Fedel takes care of And the Royals go in order. We go to the sixth inning. Cincinnati up six zip. The big hits. All the great brats. You got to be kidding me. And all the swagger. Relive the day’s biggest plays all in one lightning fast hour. show. You better believe it. And Jake, that’s going to be it for Michael Lorenzan as we guess as he’s over 100 pitches. Lorenzan out of there after five. And now it’s on Hill Serpa. Yeah, Lorenzan gave up six runs on 11 hits. Those 11 hits are a careerhigh in hits allowed for a single start for Lorenzan. And so now it’s Serpa. It’s called the bullpen powered by wholesale batteries. Any battery anytime delivered anywhere at wholesale batteries.net. First pitch to Ellie de la Cruz and he chops it up the middle. Whit ranges to his left, picks it up, speeds, throws to first. Got him. One electric shorts stop grounds out to another. And Bobby Wit Jr. did it in dazzling fashion. Elli Cruz is as fast as they come. Bobby Wit Jr. is just that much better. Nice stretch from Vinnie Pasquentino at first as well. So one up, one down on one pitch for Anel Serpa. Now he faces right-handed hitting Austin Hayes. First pitch just outside, one ball, no strikes. Sarah’s pitching now for the 22nd time this season. He delivers and Hayes pops it up down the left field line. Wit sprints after it over by the left field line. He calls for it and makes the catch. One step in fair territory. Quickly two outs. So two up, two down for Sera on just three pitches. Serpa has been trying to write the ship all season long. And it appears as though he’s starting to do so. He gave up five runs on a couple of homers against the Red Sox, but now since then, he’s reeled off five consecutive scoreless outings, and he’s well on his way to his sixth consecutive zero. Pinch hitter now for the Reds. Santiago Espenol steps to the plate. First one from Serpa over the inner edge. called strike and it’s 0 and one. Espenol is pinch hitting for Gavin Lux. A left-handed hitter who’s done for the day after going one for two with an RBI single. A walk and two-run score. Sera delivers. Breaking ball down and in. And the count’s now one and one on Santiago Espino. He’s a 263 hitter this season. His second year with the Reds after he started his career with the Blue Jays. The 1-1 bounced straight back off the top of the back stop netting. The count’s now one ball, two strikes. Espanol originally was a 10th round pick by the Red Sox. That was back in 2016. Came out of Miami Dade Community College. Big League debut of the Blue Jays in 2020. Now the one-two chop foul of the plate. Still a ball and two strikes on Espino. Royals down 6 nothing in the top of the sixth inning and the Royals have been out hit 11-2. Still about half the ball game left. Still raining at Kaufman Stadium and has been steady. The pitch punched foul into the first base side netting. Still a ball and two strikes. So the stadium lights have been on since first pitch. Gray skies since first pitch. Can’t really see any distinct clouds. with just one giant blob of gray overhead today. Sera delivers. It’s high. Two balls, two strikes. Not the most picturesque Memorial Day Monday in Kansas City. Here’s the two- two to Espino. Get on the ground to the left side. Whit dives to his left, smothers it. pops out of his glove while he was trying to get to his feet. A base hit for Espenol on a bit of a drier day. That’s a play that Bobby Wit Jr. makes 10 out of 10 times. A diving, sliding stop going to his left and then a popping up onto his feet. The ball just squirted out of the glove. Infield hit for Espenol. He’s on with two outs. And that brings up Tyler Stevenson who’s had the biggest day for the Reds. Three for three, including a two-run homer. Here’s the pitch. Breaking ball rolled down the line at third. Garcia scoops it up. Long throw to first on a bounce pass. Quantino side steps and has to come off the bag. And Stevenson is safe at first. Now Stevenson rolled it straight down the line. It bounced it looked like over the bag and so Garcia was at the deepest part of third base. He still had two feet on the infield dirt, but just barely on the edge of the infield dirt down the third base line. That’s the long a throw as you could make as a third baseman. And so Espenol moves to second. Stevenson’s on for a fourth time. And now Will Benson bats. First pitch from Sera. Slider low for ball one. Garcia’s charged with a throwing error. So Stevenson, at least for now, is denied a fourth hit of the day. You could make the argument for a hit. Sera delivers in for a strike. And it’s one and one on Will Benson. An ontarget throw. And it still would have been a fairly close play at first, I think. Sera delivers. Sinker low. Two balls in a strike on Benson. No, it’s a strike. He went around one and two. Benson checked his swing and it looked like he really did but on a field to third he’s rung up and so now Ser was a strike away from getting out of the inning. The one two breaking ball hit on the ground to the right side. Massie gobbles it up underhand tossed to Wick covering second that forces out Stevenson and ends the inning. And it’s a scoreless sixth inning for Anel Serpa. Now six consecutive scoreless outings for Anel Serpa. We go to the bottom of the sixth. take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager sets a following. I really don’t know what to say. I’m just uh so happy I gave something. We go to the bottom of the sixth. Royals trail the Reds 6 nothing. Michael Massie leads off and Kyle Isbel then back to the top of the lineup in Jonathan India against right-hander Nick Martinez who’s thrown five scoreless with just 50 pitches. His first one home to Massie. And it’s a change up and away for ball one. Santiago Espanol who pinch hit in the last inning remains in the game and plays third. currently playing off the line towards short stop with the infield shifted to the right side. One pitch. Massie pops it up foul back behind home plate out of play and it’s one and one. Now Massie was a fourth round pick in 2019 and again there are four 2019 draft picks in the Royals lineup today. Very productive draft for the Royals. the 1-1 foul third base out of play and it’s one and two. All told, with John Ra’s major league debut today, the Royals have now seen eight players from that 2019 draft class reach the major leagues. Five position players and three pitchers. Martinez delivers and Massie fouls it straight back. Still one and two. And that includes three big league regulars in Bobby Wit Jr., Michael Massie, and Vinnie Pasquentino. You add John Rae to the mix. He figures to see some regular action now. Here’s the pitch and Massie lines it past second into right field of BC. Michael Massie starts the sixth inning with a single. WBC the show keeps going strong thanks to your support. Brings up Kyle with a runner on first and nobody out. Tyler Tolbert’s another 2019 draft pick who’s reached the big leagues. He debuted earlier this year. First pitch to Isbel basketball belt tie called a strike and it’s 0 and one. Then on the pitching side, Alec Marsh, he was the second round pick in 2019. Anthony Benziano made his debut for the Royals last year. He’s now with the Marlins. and Noah Murdoch the 01 in for a strike 0 and2. Murdoch was a rule five pick by the Athletics, made his debut with them this year. He’s since been returned to the Royals and is back in Triple A with the Stormchasers. That is a lot of success from one draft class. Martinez delivers and the pitch is outside one and two on Isbel. He was a 2018 draft pick, third round pick. Also a very productive draft class for the Royals. Here’s the pitch. Is Bell pops it up shallow left center field. Hamson sprints out. Hayes comes in and he makes the catch in left center. One away. So back to Jonathan India at the top of the lineup. A 2018 draft pick himself though by the Reds of course. The Royals drafted Brady Singer 18th overall in 2018 and Singer starts tomorrow for the Reds. The Royals also drafted Chris Bubich and Daniel Lynch the fourth and Jonathan Bolan in 2018. First pitch to India over the outer half called strike and it’s 0 and one. Martinez has been in a rhythm all afternoon long. Five and a third innings he’s thrown just 60 pitches. Royals have only had three base runners, all singles. Here’s the pitch over the inside corner called strike and it’s 0 and two. Martinez is now in his second season with the Reds. It’s his eighth major league season overall. He also spent four years pitching in Japan. He came back from Japan and signed on with the Padres’s with them for a couple of years before signing with the Reds last season. Then he accepted the qualifying offer for this year. Now the O2 bounced straight back. Still no balls and two strikes. Martinez has been excellent for Terry Frankona’s Red’s rotation. Martinez has reeled off five consecutive quality starts and like Denny told you earlier, he has barely issued a walk this year. Another 02. India pops it up f out first base side out of play. Still no balls and two strikes. Martinez has only issued 13 walks all year. He walked a pair in his last start. That snapped a streak of 72 consecutive batters faced without issuing a walk. He delivers. India pops it up down the first baseline. Spencer Steer grabs it. A half step into foul ground and India is out. Two gone. That brings up Bobby Wit Jr. who’s 0 for two today in the midst of a six-game hitting streak. He doubled yesterday to extend it. It was his 20th double of the season. And now’s the time of year where if you want to you want to have a little fun, you could extrapolate some. We’re now a third of the way through the season. Here’s the pitch. Found straight back. Got a piece of Stevenson’s mask. Strike one. Well, Bobb’s played all 54 games for the Royals, 55 today. And so, because of that, you can just multiply all of his counting stats by three, and figure out what he’s on pace for this year. Here’s the 01. Get on the ground towards short stop. Hampton scoops it up underhand toss to Mlan covering second in time to force out Massie and end the inning. One fun one for Whit. He’s on pace for it’s a great night for baseball. This matchup features some of the best talent in the game. A lot of power, a lot of marquee names. Here we go. Buckle up, folks. There’s a guy wants We’re just playing ball. Off to the seventh at Kaufman Stadium, the Royals trail the Reds 6 nothing and Evan Cisk is on the mound. His call to the bullpen is powered by wholesale batteries. Any battery, anytime delivered anywhere at wholesale batteries.net. Assis was called up 10 days ago from AAA Omaha, but this is just his second appearance since then. He tossed 2/3 of an inning in San Francisco as part of the Royals bullpen game. He was pretty solid and he had two other major league outings before that total of two and a3 scoreless innings in his first stint in the big leagues. And so all told, Evan Cisk has made three major league appearances and he’s thrown three scoreless innings this season. And well, not to mention, he’s struck out seven and he’s walked three so far as a big leager. He paces a couple of right-handed hitters to start this inning. First, Matt Mlan and then Garrett Hamson. Eight and nine in Terry Frankona’s lineup. And then back to the top of the lineup and lefty TJ Friedel. Rainy afternoon at Kaufman Stadium. It continues to fall. Cisk is ready and he delivers. The first pitch cutter that’s just inside. One ball, no strikes. Now Cisk is on the very edge of the third base side of the rubber. He stands a little crossbodied kind of like Chris Bubich. And then he slings it at about a 3/4 arm slot. The one pitch. It’s a slider that curls over the heart of the plate. A strike and it’s one and one. The way Ciskers when he strides to the plate, it looks like he’s stepping toward the first base dugout and then he unfurls. He delivers and Mlan slashes it foul. First base side into the netting and the count’s now one and two. And not only is this Evans Cisk’s fourth major league appearance, but this is his home debut. First time pitching at Coffin Stadium. First time wearing the home uniform. Here’s the pitch. Bounces in. Two balls, two strikes. Assist. Made his big league debut at Yankee Stadium and pitched later on that road trip at Kameri Park in Detroit and then at Oracle Park on this most recent road trip. He’s had a locker here at Kaufman Stadium, but he hasn’t gotten into a home game until now. The two-2 down and in. Salvi blocks it away. The count’s full. Three balls, two strikes. Royals down 6 nothing. We’re in the top of the seventh inning. The Reds have 12 hits today. 11 of them against starter Michael Lorenzan. Here’s the payoff pitch. Fast ball over the inner half. Called strike three. Mlan’s down looking. A great start to his home debut. Evan Cis, one up, one down with a strike out. And with that strikeout by Evan and every Royal strikeout this season, Sunlife Financial and the Royals Foundation will donate to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City. And now Garrett Hansen, who’s making his Red’s debut today, and it’s been a good one for him. He’s two for three with a couple of singles. First pitch from Cisk. Flutters inside, one ball, no strikes. Now Hamson started this season with the Diamondbacks. Signed them, signed a minor league deal with them and made the roster out of spring training. Only 18 games with the Diamondbacks and then he was designated for assignment. Cisk delivers and Hamson pops it up foul out of play off of the right. It’s one and one. And then Hson got signed by the Reds just this past Saturday. So it’s only his third day with the team. And today he’s their starting short stop. The 1-1 down and in. Two balls in a strike. A Hampson played 113 games with the Royals last year. Utility infielder, occasionally a pinch runner, once in a while starter, but he will be very well remembered here in Kansas City for his postseason performance. a two-1 pitch and it’s a fast ball over the outer half called strike two and two. Now Hamson actually had an outstanding postseason with the Royals. He was three for three with three RBI’s. Also scored a run and drew a walk. He was perfect at the plate. Came off the bench as a pinch hitter a couple of times and delivered the 2-2. Hamson waves and misses and a curve strike three. Back-to- back strikeouts persist. Two outs now in the top of the seven. And that brings up lefty TJ Friedel. So, while Garrett Hamson wasn’t a royal nearly as long or nearly as memorably as Brady Singer, who got a tribute video and a great ovation before the game, Hamson certainly made his mark with the 2024 Royals. First pitch to Freedel. And it’s a slider just outside. That’s ball one. Well, Cisk has always been lethal against left-handed hitters. He’s been pretty good against right-handed hitters, too, but not nearly as dangerous. He delivers. And Fredle takes a sinker knee high for a called strike. It’s one and one. At the AAA level this year, much larger sample size for Cyst. Lefties hit just 133. Righties hit 273. the 1-1 breaking ball dives low and outside. Two balls, one strike on TJ Fredel. But again, that’s a bit of a smaller sample size overall, too. Gave up nine hits to righties, two hits to lefties in Triple A. The pitch RLE dribbles it back to the mound. Cis gobbles it up, runs toward first. Underhand toss to Vinnie in time for the out. Inning over. How about a one moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921. Thanks for hanging out with us this afternoon. The Royals trail the Reds 6 nothing. We start the bottom of the seventh inning at Rainey Kaufman Stadium. Everyone’s broken out the ponchos today. Vinnie Pasquantino leads off. Right-hander Nick Martinez is back on the bump and bouncing around. He delivers and Pascino takes a curveball low for ball one. Now passino singled back in the fourth inning that extended his hitting streak to a season best 10 games. He remains redot. Martinez delivers passino swings and misses in a back foot cutter. The count’s now one and one. Well, Martinez has been picking him up and putting him down, rocking back and forth and delivering. He’s only thrown 68 pitches. He delivers down and in. Two balls in a strike. He never stops moving on the mound. He doesn’t really come set in the traditional way when he’s pitching from the wind up with the bases empty. Really bounces back and forth on each of his feet. Steps into his wind up. The pitchino chops it to the right side. Mlan slides to his left. It’s under his glove into right field. A base hit for Vinnie Pascantino. He’s two for three. A Royals start the bottom of the seventh with a single. Trailing 6 nothing. Got to start somewhere. And pass Martino’s out at first for Salvador Perez. You know what Nick Martinez what he does reminds me of. Curious if you guys feel the same way. First pitch to Salvi and he hits it high in the air down the left field line. Does it stay fair into the corner? A fair ball and a home run for Salvador Perez. The wind took it into the Hall of Fame seats. A two-run shot and the Royals are on the board in the bottom of the seven. That ball went for a ride down the left field line. It was headed foul, then drifted back and stayed true. Now he’s got his fourth home run of the season. So the Royals finally break through. Nick Martinez left Salvia a cutter right down the middle. First pitch to Mikel Garcia. It’s down and away. Ball one. You just hope that Salvi has the power stroke back. It’s been mostly a power outage. the pitch. Garcia lines it down the left field line and that’s a fair ball bouncing toward the left field corner. Hayes picks it up on the warning tracker. Garcia’s into second. He’s got a double. Three straight hits for the Royals to start the seventh. A passentino single, a Salvi home run. Now a Garcia double. And that earns Nick Martinez a visit from pitching coach Derek Johnson. the first time he’s had to make the walk to the mound all afternoon long. He’s trying to settle down a pitcher who has never appeared settled on the mound despite the fact that the Royals haven’t been able to do anything against him. Now, here’s what it reminds me of. And Nick Martinez on the mound, unsettled as he is, bouncing around, it’s like a toddler trying not to go to the bathroom and then he delivers the pitch. Yeah, I would have said the same thing. Exactly the same thing. Yeah, exactly. My words perfect. But it does, right? The way he’s just kind of dancing around a little bit. He reminds me of Nolan Aronado. The way he sets up in the batters, his feet are always moving. I mean, you would never see a big league hitter do that. Aronado does things you would never see a big leager do offensively or defensively. Good thing there’s a restroom in the dugging. Here’s John Rae, his third major league at bat. 0 for two with two strikeouts in his debut. First pitch from Martinez. Ra drops down a bunt. Third base side. It’s perfect. Martinez picks it up. Beside. That’s what they show you in the baseball textbook. He got a first pitch fast ball, let her high over the outer half and bunted it perfectly up the line. The Reds are challenging to call at first base. Well, for now, John Ray has a major league hit. What does the challenge decree? It was a very close play at first and Martinez made an excellent throw and the ball appears to have hit Spencer Steer’s leather before Rave crossed the base and it doesn’t have to be in the back of the glove. It just has to hit the inside leather of the glove out and the call is overturned. Oh, John Ray goes from having a butt hit for his first one in the big leagues to going back to the dugout with merely a sacrifice. You know, the nice thing that he did and you see it not that often. It’s just great fundamentals and Rod Keru talked about it all the time. You don’t run and bunt. You bunt and then run. And those that run and then bunt, it’s either a foul ball or a lousy bunt. And he did it really well. So good things ahead for John Ra. Runner on third now with one out for Nick Loftton. Here’s the pitch. Sky down the right field line. Benson sprints over toward the tarpon foul ground and it bangs off the sidewall. No balls in a strike. Well, someday soon when John Rae does record his first major league hit, he’ll have a pretty good story. Remember the time I had a major league hit for about 25 seconds and then they overturned it. 01 to Loftton. Fisted in the air, foul first base side toward the Royals dugout and into it. No balls, two strikes. The Loftton was teammates with Rave in Triple A just a handful of days ago and now they’re batting backto back in the major league lineup. They were both off to terrific starts this season at the AAA level. Both of them had excellent spring trainings and as Matt Quero said they got optioned, but they have knocked the door down to join the big league club. 0 and2 on Loftton with Garcia at third. The pitch placed in his center field. It hangs up for TJ Fredel. He makes the catch. Garcia tags up from third. He jocks in to score and the Royals have cut the deficit in half in this inning. An inning that began with a six nothing deficit. The Royals have played at three. It’s now six to three in the bottom of the seventh. A sacrifice fly for Nick Loftton. Michael Massie bats with the bases empty and two outs. first pitch to Massie in for a strike and it’s 0 and one. And by the way, John Rave, fifth round pick in 2019 out of Illinois State, the 01. Massie got jammed, pops it up left side. Hamson’s there and he makes the catch to end the inning. We’ll talk more about this later, but Rave also went to Central Catholic High School. By leading the big leagues in stolen bases and strikeouts, he became the first player in major league history to lead in both of those categories. Nobody else had ever done that. 67 stolen bases, 218 strikeouts. fast ball just off the inside edge. Just thought he had thrown a strike. Well, Cruz is happy he didn’t. They’re right-handed now against the lefty. And in comes the two- two pitch. And this fast ball splits the plate. Strike three called and two up, two down. Five in a row retired by assist. Three of them strike out. Now, for a guy that’s only pitched once since he got called up 10 days ago, he’s looked awfully sharp. Letting it fly. Why not? Now Hayes. Fast ball fouled off. Hayes drove in Cincinnati’s first run. Sack fly back in the first inning. He scored a run in the third. So Austin Hayes officially now 0 for three. This fast ball fouled off. Pretty good swing there. No balls, two strikes by scoring in the first inning. Cincinnati. Now they have scored at least one run in the first inning 19 times this year. This fast ball is lifted to deep center. Back goes Isbel to the wall and he’s going to have to play it off the fence. It kicks away but not that far. But there goes Hayes for third and the relay throw will not be in time. And that’s a triple with two men out. I was up there for a while and Hayes was running hard out of the box. Smash that like button on this broadcast. Espol came into the game as a pinch hitter, reached by way of an infield hit in the sixth. Drinking ball in on the hands and he fouled it away. One ball, one strike. Cincinnati. Now we’re talking about scoring in the first inning. They outscored their opponents 46-21 so far this season in the first inning. Ball two. Two and one now to Espinol. Runner at third. Two down. Six to three in favor of the Reds. They have led throughout the night. Sliced up the right field line. Fair ball and the run is in. Around first on his way to second is Espinol with an RBI double. All this started with two out after Ciskin retired the first five hitters that he faced. So a couple of extra base hits. Now it’s seven to three Cincinnati. The batter is Stevenson. He’s been a problem. Three out of four. Two singles, a two-run home run. He’s driven in three. Lefty’s breaking ball. Finds the inside corner right at the knees. Strike one. Seven runs, 14 hits now for the visitors. Another breaking ball. This one missed when the ball went straight. Runner at second leads away. Isbell goes after the first pitch. Ground ball to first. Steer scoops it up. Comes back to first. steps on first base ahead of Kyle Isel. One pitch, one out for Santion. Now India, Jonathan India in the game, one out of three. That was a fourth inning single. Right-handers first pitch. Fast ball just above the belt for a strike. The Reds have had their share of problems with their bullpen. There’s a line shot right at the left fielder and right there to claim it is Hayes. And very quickly there are two men out in the Royals eighth inning. Cincinnati have lost 10 games this season in which they have held a lead. That included twice in their just concluded weekend series against the Chicago Cubs. They lost yesterday and it was their fifth loss when leading after six innings. So, bullpen problems, yes, but the Royals are still four runs in a rares and strike one to Bobby Wood Jr. Bobo for three. Right-hander’s next pitch to him is swung on and missed. Basketball from Santion. Nobody on. Two out and the pitch in the way. A fast ball. Santion spelled S A N T I L L A N. Tony Santion. His one-two pitch to Whit. Drop the foul. Seven to3 Reds as we move to the ninth and Steven Cruz into the pitch. Cruz gave up a walk-off single to Brooks Lee Twins on Saturday. So Cruz will try to bounce back from that and in so doing will face the lower third of Cincinnati’s batting order. Brady Singer will pitch against his former team tomorrow evening. Will Benson climbs into the batter’s box. This is game number 19 for Cruz. It’s one and0. Couple of innings ago, the skies had lightened a bit, but now the skies are dark and brooding. First pitch was fouled off. Good gracious swing by Will Benson. He’s 0 for three. Roing a run with a sack fly back in the third inning. Cincinnati with one in the first, three in the third, two in the fifth. Added one in the eighth. Pass fouled off. They count quickly. 0 and two. The Royals put together a bit of a rally in the seventh inning. Pasquantino singled to start things and then Perez homerred to left. Garcia promptly doubled. Eventually rode home on a sack fly. Fast ball high, one ball, two strikes to Will Benson outside. So from 0 and two to two and two Royals all time against Cincinnati are 21 and 17. This pitch going outside. So three balls, two strikes. Cincinnati. The Reds are 11 and seven in years past. There’s strike three called and it’s one away. So, the Reds have played very well here, but the Royals have turned things around and have really dominated in playing at the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati. The Royals are 11 and4 against them. Matt Mlan at the plate and then he takes a swipe at a fast ball and fouls it off. Last year was a pretty memorable sweep out in Cincinnati. The Royals outscored the Reds 28-3. Tyrone Blanco had the game of his life, swinging a yellow cranbat for players weekend. It was a fun one. Ines outside. Yeah, it’s very similar to we talked about it when the Cardinals were here. The Cardinals have always played well here and the Royals have always played well in St. Louis. So that series will resume next week. We’ll see if that trend holds. There’s another big swing in a fast ball and fouled straight back and ball two strikes. There is no explanation for those things. You can analyze them from now until Christmas and I can approve a thing. There’s a pitch I suck. That’s baseball. There’s that’s your explanation. The way it is. What was it that Louis Tant always famously said about baseball? You don’t know nothing. See S Seors off two balls and two strikes on number eight hitter Matt Mlan. Yeah. I’ve always thought that people that bet on baseball. I don’t know. There’s something wrong. I’m with you. Two pitch is strike three called. Cruz put back to back called third strikes. WBC the show, the sports channel that belongs to God. Folded hands. And it’s thanks for being part of the road to 100K. Could not save his swing. Cruz filling up the strike zone and now he’s 0 and2 with Hson. Seven to3 Reds. We are in the ninth. The pitch is strike to be called. Three straight called third strikes. Down go the Reds. Up from the Royals in the bottom of the ninth. Moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921. Smith courts one in right down the line. It may go. Go crazy, folks. Go crazy. The window seats are the baseball day begins with MLB Central weekdays at 10:00 a.m. Eastern only on MLB Network. If you’re not watching this show, you’re the problem. Let’s see if we can figure Bottom of the ninth, seven to three in favor of the Reds. And right-hander Emilio Pagan comes in to pitch. This is his 25th game. He’s 0 and two. His earned run average at 3.75. He’s given up just 15 hits in 24 innings. Strikeout to walk ratio is very good. 28-6 home runs allowed by Pagan so far even pitching half the time in that little ballpark in Cincinnati. Big fat zero. Here’s Vinnie to lead off. He led off the seventh with a single and started a little three-run rally. And Pagan’s first pitch is a strike during the cutter. It was up a little bit. Vinnie took it and he’s down in the count 0 and one. Espentino is two out of three and he hits a soft liner off the end of the bat that drops safely in right center field. Now, Pascino could very easily be four for four because his first at bat way back in the first inning resulted in a drive to deep right field and with a strong wind blowing at first pitch and knocked it down. It was caught right at the base of the bullpen. So, Pascantino could very well have a home run and three singles, but he’ll settle for three out of four. And he’s standing at first for Perez. Salvi one out of three. A two-run home run. His last time up and he takes outside. Rez becomes a key man in the inning. John checks first and pitches and it’s a little bit low. Perez started to swing and held up. So 7 to3 and I will repeat Cincinnati Reds have lost 10 games this season in which they have held a lead. It happened to them twice as recently as just this past weekend when playing the Cubs. Yesterday they had an 8-3 lead with five innings and loss. Yeah, it was their fifth loss when leading after six innings. So, and now pitch inside and it hits Perez on the left shoulder. And now two men are on and the Royals are just one more base runner away from having the tying run at the plate. That tying run at the plate could very well be John Rae, who’s now on deck with Mike El Garcia batting. So Perez, as they said, was a key hitter and was hit. So another meeting at the mound. Well, this is on Pan’s shoulders. Not only is there nobody throwing in the Red’s bullpen, but their bullpen mound is covered by a tarp right now because of the rain. Garcia doubled and scored his last time up. So he’s one out of three. So there is hope. Cincinnati have scored just one time since the fifth inning. So the Royals are still a part of this game very much so with two on nobody out. The pitch to Garcia high pop up playable first base. That’s a infield fly rule call. And so even before the ball is caught, Garcia is out. And that is a huge, huge out. Well, you understand the strategy going after the first pitch after a mound visit after the pitcher hit the last batter. You figure you’re going to get a pretty good pitch to hit and Garcia did. He just missed it. Gone 0 for three. Brave pitch left-handed and the pitch from a little bit outside. Ball one. John Rae in a big spot right here. Loftton will be next. Ra gets on. The Royals really have something going. Change up is outside and two balls, no strikes. Some closers come in and you can tell immediately that they are in charge. Others look like they’re throwing and hoping. Pitch in the dirt. All three. Three and0. Kan looks like he is just throwing and hoping. Boy, you don’t think that doesn’t ring in the Royals dugget. Goes back to what Tom Siver said a long time ago. Look like you’re in charge whether you are or aren’t. He walked in and four pitches. So, two free tickets after Pascantino’s leadoff single. And now out comes Waters to hit in Loftton’s spot. And the Reds now are in trouble. Well, congrats to John Rae. First time on base as a big leager. And he gets to stay there. That’s right. He was there momentarily back in the seventh inning before the safe call was overturned. the ball in which he was really nice about ball that he wanted for what he thought was going to be a hit. It was overturned and that ball which was going to go on his trophy case, they just roll it and they threw it in the batting practice bag. That’s where that ball is missing right now. Meanwhile, the bases are loaded. Drew Waters at the plate. The Royals are down four, but have the bases loaded with one out. In comes the pitch inside. Run ball, no strikes. That was a borderline pitch, but Bean has now missed with five in a row. I tell you, he is throwing and hoping for a decent result. He does not look like he’s in charge. The pitch outside, two balls, no strikes. Well, if you’re Waters, you got to make him throw you one. Look for your pitch and your spot. The delivery. They got a strike on the outside corner and it’s two and one. They got a gift of a strike. Mhm. Drew Waters looking for a pitch that he can handle. Base is loaded. One out. Ninth inning. Royals trying to rally. Here’s the pitch. High and away. Ball three. The Royals have already received two free tickets. Perez hit by a pitch. John Rae just drew a walk. They’re warming up in a hurry in the Cincinnati bullpen. The 3-1 pitch. Swung on and missed. He swung right through a fast ball. And now the biggest pitch in the game about to be thrown to Drew Waters. It’s Ian Jabau warming up in the Red’s bullpen. Runners lead away from all three bases. Huge pitch is on the way. Swung on and missed. So the gun got the result he wanted. Waters striking out. Pitch was just above the belt. He had a fast ball running away from him. He’s a left-handed batter from a right-handed pitcher. Now, Michael Massie. He just threw Waters six consecutive fast balls. Michael Massie has two home runs. He’s one out of three in the game. The home run would tie it. The pitch is high. Ball one fast ball. When the game started, there was a pretty good breeze about 20 miles an hour blowing in from right. It deprived Pasquantino of a home run. The breeze now is almost negligent. Nothing. Very, very little from the flags. Breaking ball strike and the count is one and one. It is still raining. coming down a little bit lighter, but it is still raining as it has throughout the game. Bases loaded, two out, ninth inning. And a buck, a bach has been called. And another break for the Royals. Pastino will score. So now it’s seven to four and runners are at second and third. Well, Pagan has been going to the spikes at the back of the mound to kick some dirt off his cleats after just about every pitch. And this time around, he towed the rubber and then just decided, nope, need to get some dirt off. And that is as clear a block as it gets. One and one. Massie with a hit could pull the Royals to within one. And he takes high and outside. Now, Pagan might escape and walk off the mound with the Reds still in front, but he is throwing and hoping. I can promise you that, Ashley. Ooh, good swing and he fouled it straight back. That was a center cut fast ball. There’s been a lot of those in this inning. And well, like you said, Denny, that is the definition of throwing and hoping. It is not easy to hit a major league fast ball no matter where it is. Gon is throwing and hoping that one of his defenders is standing in front of the line drive. The two two pitch. Oh, another good swing and fouled straight back. Michael Massie has had two very hitable pitches back to back. And La Pagan digging some mud out from between his spikes, taking over his next pitch. Runners second and third. Seven to four Cincinnati. The pitch high drive center field should be caught and is. He kept throwing. He kept hoping. His prayer was answered as Massie flies out to center. Cincinnati is taking game one of the threeame series by the score of seven to four. And we’ll be right back. It’s a fitness black card. Royals were out hit by the Reds 14-7. Really Cincinnati scoring early in the contest. One in the first, then three in the third. and two more in the fifth. So, Cincinnati with six runs in the first five innings. And that was just a little bit too much of a hill to overcome for the Royals. And they did make a run because they did rally with three in the seventh. But then Santion came in and pitched a one, two, three, eighth inning. And Pagan coming in to finish for the Reds. Boy, he really struggled. Jake, he gave up a leadoff single. He gave two more free bases, a hit batter and a walk. He also committed a block that allowed the Royals to score their final run. And at the end, he got a strike out and a fly ball to center. And Massie had two really good swings at pitches, fouled them off, and then eventually the game ended on a fly ball to center. But your gun was, let’s just say, not that impressive. Yeah, he opened the door and it looked like the Royals might be ready to barrel right through it and make a pretty great comeback at the end of this game after really struggling early on in the game. You tip your captain Nick Martinez, he was terrific. He kept the Royals off balance, especially through the first six innings. He was through six scoreless innings on just 66 pitches. And then the Royals started seeing him a little bit better in the seventh, a single, a homer, and a double to start that inning. John Rave had the bunt that appeared to be a hit and then got overturned and wound up being a sacrifice bunt that pushed Mike Garcia to third. Nick Loftton had a sacrifice fly that made it a three-run inning in the seventh and ultimately it’s a sixth consecutive quality start for Nick Martinez. Seven innings of three-run ball. And you could say really just the opposite for Michael Lorenzan who allowed a career-high 11 hits today in his five innings. And the Reds were all over him from the very beginning of the game. They did not take very many bad swings against Lorenzan today, who normally has excellent stuff and keeps offenses and hitters off balance, but you tip the cap to the Reds for having a good game plan against Laorenzan and executing it. And there are some games that are determined in the first three innings, some in the middle three innings, some in the last three innings, some all throughout. This was a game that was pretty well determined within the first three innings. And the Reds only went down in order. one, two, three twice in the game. So, they had runners everywhere and did a good job of moving them around and scoring them, especially in the early going. So, tomorrow night, the second game of the series, and that should be interesting as Brady Singer, former Royals pitcher as you know, comes to the mound for the Reds. And the Royals are yet to determine their starter. We’ll know more tomorrow, but Brady Singer with a record of five and three will go against his former team. So, we’ll see you tomorrow night. Denny Matthews, good afternoon. Late afternoon it is from the ballpark. And now Jake has the totals. All right, Denny. For the Cincinnati Reds today, seven runs, 14 hits, no errors, and 11 left on base. The Reds had a ton of opportunities. They were just base. The Reds had a ton of opportunities. They were just three for 10 with runners in scoring position. And the Reds did have a home run that came from Tyler Stevenson in the fifth inning, a two-run shot against Michael Lorenzan. For Stevenson, it was his second home run of the season. For the Kansas City Royals today, four runs, seven hits, one error, four left on base. The Royals were 0 for four with runners in scoring position. And the Royals had a home run. Salvador Perez went deep down the left field line into the corner. A two-run shot in the seventh. For Salvia, it was his fourth home run of the season. For John Raven in his major league debut, he finishes the afternoon 0 for two with a couple of strikeouts, a sacrifice bunt, and also a walk. and he was pretty solid out in right field as well in his major league debut. The winning pitcher today is Nick Martinez. He improves to three and five.
