CARMEL, Ind. — A Carmel man has been charged after he reportedly stabbed two New York Knicks fans at a brewery during Game 2 of the NBA’s Eastern Conference Finals earlier this month.

According to court documents filed on Tuesday in Hamilton County, 24-year-old Jarrett Funke has been charged with:

  • One count of battery by means of a deadly weapon, a Level 5 felony

  • One count of battery resulting in serious bodily injury, a Level 5 felony

  • One count of criminal recklessness committed with a deadly weapon, a Level 6 felony

Officers with the Carmel Police Department were called to a brewery on the evening of May 23 on a reported disturbance. That evening, the Indiana Pacers were facing the New York Knicks in Game 2 of the NBA’s Eastern Conference Finals, a game that the Pacers won 114-109 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Initially, police were called because of an alleged fight involving a man, later identified as Jarrett Funke. However, once Funke left the brewery, the caller stated that police did not need to respond.

Minutes later, an employee of the brewery called police, stating that Funke had reportedly returned to the brewery’s patio. The caller stated that Funke reportedly stabbed a man in the back and was attempting to leave.

When police arrived, they found two individuals with wounds. The court documents said that one had a stab wound in the back while the other had a laceration in his lower leg.

In interviews with the two victims, they alleged that Funke approached them at the bar. Funke reportedly “smacked” the Knicks hat off of one of the victims onto the ground. Funke was then reportedly taken outside as he yelled “f— you, you still have a f—— problem. Take this outside.” to the two individuals.

Around five minutes later, the two Knicks fans were outside on the patio when Funke reportedly “stormed through the fence” of the brewery and began attacking the two individuals. One of the victims told police that he “briefly displayed a black folding pocket knife to deter (Funke) but repocketed it, as he had no intention of using it.”

A verbal altercation reportedly evolved into a physical one, ending with the two victims being allegedly stabbed by Funke. In an interview with Funke, he reportedly told police that the two Knicks fans were “talking s—” and claimed that they were the ones who began the altercation.

Funke claims that one of the Knicks fans pushed him to the ground and “began punching him in the face.” The documents said that Funke claims that he “retrieved his pocketknife from his hoodie and swung it around towards (one of the Knicks fans) back with his right hand.”

However, the documents said that there were multiple witnesses who stated that Funke was the “primary aggressor in this incident.”

According to court documents, Funke’s initial hearing is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon in Hamilton County.

As of this story’s publication, the Indiana Pacers lead the NBA Eastern Conference Finals against the New York Knicks 2-1, with Game 4 scheduled for 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in downtown Indianapolis.

  1. Man it sucks that some people are just too obsessed with sports and do things like this

  2. Okay I apologize for saying the Knicks trash throwing mob thing would never happen in Indianapolis

  3. Imagine if it was a bag of plastic bottles… someone could’ve gotten hurt!

  4. I totally get and love sports fandom but getting into an actual fight is the most low iq shit ever. Booing each and shit talking is cool but you gotta be a dumb man baby to get into a real fight over these teams

  5. It really is just a silly sports game that lacks a necessity for everyday society

  6. How more fans have to be stabbed before we realize Indiana is a dangerous place for opposing fans?

  7. For those that don’t know, Carmel is where all the rich people live and is north of Indianapolis.

  8. As someone who grew up in this area, these kids think they are really cool and will be heroes when they get out. They probably have not had any repercussions for lesser actions leading up to this and in today’s climate won’t from this either

  9. Little bitch literally left, went and got a knife, and stabbed a man in the back

  10. Yea next time you guys wanna make generalizations about knicks fans saying were too crazy just remember its not all of us like that cause u got crazy people all over the world

  11. Imaging going to jail defending your favorite millionaires over someone else’s favorite millionaires

  12. there’s a dumbass guy i know posted on his socials that if pacers lose he’ll pull his tooth out. that was game 3. they lost and he really pulled his tooth out. i didn’t think he was being serious but he was smh. some people take sports way too fkn serious it’s concerning💀

  13. Sports do not cause behavior like this, these are already damaged people looking for an excuse.

  14. I’m not saying karma is real or defending this at all, but it is a little ironic that Pacer fans SWORE that only Knicks fans would crash out like this😅

  15. “Funke claims they were the ones who began the altercation”

“Multiple witnesses state Funke was the primary aggressor”

    What an idiot

  16. “all knicks fans are trash!”
    “one bad apple”

i’m not going to type it out but between this and the way “class” is used by fans in a certain bball city in the W, there seems to be a secret third thing happening in the narrative here.

  17. people say women are too emotional but male sports fans break out in fights and turn to violence over a game other men play???

  18. I’ll finally admit it: People from Indiana care more about basketball.

  19. Individuals (like this one) can be pieces of shit, i dont expect pacers fans to magically prevent this any more than I can stop random knicks fans who’ve assaulted people

  20. damn will there be national media stories about this? will the knicks fans get invited on pat maccafee and get free tickets to game 5??

  21. And to think, the Knicks fans who threw a closed garbage bag at the dude in the Hali jersey got more coverage than this

  22. I was informed that Knicks fans were the worst and Indiana fans would NEVER do anything like this

  23. So basically this dude started with two Knicks fans got kicked out, came back start with them some more, started getting his ass kicked and then stabbed the two of them.

  24. Oh but to everyone here, we’re the trash fanbase. Everyone’s got idiots, NY and Indy. I hope to
God none of you actually condone this clown’s behavior

  25. And here r/nba told me that it was just toxic Knicks fans and that kind of thing wouldn’t happen elsewhere…
