Thanks for joining us along with the Hall of Famer Denny Matthews, Steve Stewart, and our producer engineer Eric Guthrie. I’m Jake Eisenberg. Well, the Royals dropped the series opener yesterday 7 to4 and entered today at 29 and 26 on the season, fourth place in the American League Central. Meanwhile, the Cincinnati Reds are a game below 500 at 27 and 28. They’re tied for third in the National League Central. Really fun full circle pitching matchup today. A couple of guys both drafted by the Royals in the first round of 2018. For the Royals, it’s lefty Daniel Lynch the fourth to pitch a bullpen game. He was the 34th overall pick in 2018. And then for the Reds, it’s a familiar face in a different uniform. Right-hander Brady Singer, the Royals 18th overall pick in 2018. That pitching matchup presented by IBW Local 124, providing the best opportunities in the electrical field of construction for over a century. Visit ibw124.org. Time for baseball now with the playbyplay. The voice of the Royals, Denny Matthews. Okay, Jake. TJ Fredel first up for the Reds. DJ hitting .289 with 57 hits. Left-handed batter. So, Daniel Lynch with the Royals numbers one and two starting pitchers on the injured list. Lynch gets the call and finally Ron Kulpa home plate umpire said let’s go and now Lynch ready and pitches first pitch of the game is way blowing outside ball one three home runs 19 RBI’s for Cincinnati’s leadoff hitter he’s stolen eight bases open stance he’ll spray the ball around there’s a pitch inside and the count is 2 and Oh, the outfield playing Fredel around toward left and not that deep is Bell in center and a strike. And the count is two balls in one strike for Lynch. His second starting assignment in the last seven days. The lefty’s next pitch, strike two. So from 2 and 0 to 2 and two. Daniel’s most recent start last Wednesday in San Francisco allowed one hit, three walks, one and two/3 scoreless innings. Now the two- two pitch, breaking ball that hung a little bit, but hit off the end of the bat out to short right over comes Rave to make the play. John Rae takes care of Fredo. Soft fly ball out into short right field. One down for Santiago Espenol. Cincinnati’s third baseman, 42 hits, batting average 273. And the first pitch from Lynch to the right-handed batter almost nicked him on the knee way inside. One ball, no strikes. Lynch set, brings it home, throws it high and outside. So two and 0 on the first two hitters. Dela Cruz will follow Espel. And the next pitch is hit in the air short right field along the line. Everybody chasing it and it’s going to drop just near the railing in the tarp down the right field line. Raven and Massie and Pasquantino all were in hot pursuit of that high twisting foul ball and it just barely got out of reach. Two balls, one strike now on Espanol. Now ground ball sharply hit but foul past third base. Two balls, two strikes, same pattern. Fredel was two and 0, then two and two, and then fly ball right field. Spinol was 2 and0, now it’s two and two. Then the next pitch, breaking ball, strike three call. So it appeared that Espanol was looking for anything but that. That spinner just absolutely froze him. And down he goes. And it’s two up, two down for Dela Cruz. Switch hitter, 251 average, nine home runs. He was Cincinnati’s designated hitter in the game last night. He was tempted to swing, started, pitch a strike, and the count 0 and one. Backto back beautiful knuckle curves from Lynch. Daniel’s next pitch is squirted foul off the end of the bat. Strike two. So this hitter, he’s dangerous instead of two and 0. Then Chaz has him mow and two. Very overcast, very gentle breeze out of the north. Not much of a factor. And a swing by Delon Cruz. And down he goes. So Lynch with a couple of strikeouts and a one, two, three. Top of the first after half an inning. Red nothing and the Royals are Let’s see if you can figure out the following baseball slang term. Today’s phrase is oppo taco. Do you know what it means? Oppo taco. The window seats are the baseball day begins with MLB Central weekdays at 10:00 a.m. Eastern only on MLB Network. If you’re not watching this show, you’re the problem. Utility Company. No score. Royals bat. Bottom of the first. India with Pascantino coming up against former Royal Brady Singer. So India and Singer teammates at the University of Florida. and they were involved in the trade. Their wives are best friends. So, a very interesting trade. Cincinnati was looking for pitching. The Royals looking for a leadoff man. And here they are. First pitch, fast ball right in there. Strike one. Singer of course had an excellent collegiate career. Right-hander deals and a breaking ball sweeps away and outside. One ball, one strike. Singer always a quick worker. Gathers the sign, brings it in. A swing and a miss. Hard slider. He kept it away from him. And now Singer has the advantage in the count. One ball, two strikes. Brady was the SEC pitcher of the year. Also won the Dick Hower Trophy. Fast ball high and away. Two balls and two strikes. India is two out of five with a walk in their previous matchups. Two pitch had him reaching for a breaking ball. Two hopper to third. Espenol throws on the run in time to get Indie at first. One. To your point about their previous matchups. Well, each of the previous times they face each other, they were wearing each other’s current jersey. Yep. Baseball can do some strange things. Strange but poetic. Mhm. Twists and turns of the game. Fast ball little bit tight to Bobby with Jr. Bob hitting 293. Brady Singer rocks and deals and it’s loaning outside. Two balls, no strikes. Wid 0 for four last night. 200 from Singer just off the outside corner and the count is 3 and 0. Brady ready. Back he comes with a strike and it’s three and one on wit. Singer opened the season 4 and 0. So he was off and rolling for his new team but to couple of speed bumps since and now ball 40 went outside with a fast ball and the Royals have one on with one out. You know, it’s funny. Yesterday, Freddy was asked about facing his former team and how he was going to approach some of the Royals, specifically Bobby Wit Jr., and he kind of laughed. He said, “I have no idea cuz there are no holes in his swing.” And I guess the only hole is to throw it away from the strike zone. Now, a hot hitter, Pascantino. He jumps back as a pitch from Singer comes way inside. Denny, three out of four, scored twice. game last night. Seven for 12 in the Minnesota series. That’s a hot hitter. Whit takes a lead. Strike on the inside edge and it’s one ball, one strike. Then he had his fourth straight multi-hit game yesterday. Extended his hitting streak to 10. We had a good lead, not running on this pitch, which is lifted into left field. pays the left fielder to his right to make the catch. Whit fakes a tag and an advanced try toward second, but hit the brakes after a couple of steps. And now there are two men out for Salvador Perez. Salvi hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning yesterday off Nick Martinez. Perez now four home runs, batting average 226. There goes whit. The pitch is low and outside and no throw from Tino to catch it. Strolling base number 20 for Bobby Wood Jr. that ties him for the major league lead and steals with Luis Robert of the White Sox. One ball, no strikes. Pitch to Salvi and a big swing but no contact. The count is now even. One ball, one strike. How many times have we seen Perez in a situation just like this with take a shot toward right center field given the pitch and there is a gap between Fredel and center and Benson and right one ball one strike no score first inning the pitch blowing away ball two and Salvi was one out of three overall in the game last night. Here comes the 2-1 and a ground ball to third. Nice stop to his left goes Espanel. Throw back to first is in time. Good play. He went a long way. Espanel throwing on the run headed towards second base. An accurate throw to first and that’s the Royals first inning. Let’s see if you can figure out the following baseball slang term. Sundays at 11:30 Eastern. park experience by booking today at royals.com/experiences. No score to the second inning. Austin Hayes will bat first. Then Tyler Stevenson followed by Spencer Steer. And that was a big first inning for Daniel Lynch because the Cincinnati Reds have scored more runs in the first inning than any team in the big leagues. Got one in the game last night. First pitch is fouled off and Hayes had an aggressive swing at a pitch up. Cincinnati now for the season have scored 46 runs in the first inning. Swinging a miss. A nice change from Daniel Lynch. Had Hayes out in front. Count belonging to Lynch. Nothing in two. Hayes out of the batters box asking for time. Thinking things over for a moment. And now the O2 pitch down and in. One ball and two strikes. Well, that first inning couldn’t have gone much better for Lynch or for the Royals. The plan for Lynch is one plus, much like it was in San Francisco. And Lynch only needed 13 pitches in the first and got two strikeouts. Now pitch in on the hands is fouled back and out of play. We’ll see how long he goes tonight. He threw an inning and two/3 in his start of the bullpen game in San Francisco, but he did throw 40 pitches, so there might be a little bit of a longer leash. One-two pitch is low and inside. Two balls, two strikes. Yeah. And it becomes a feel thing. Number one, pitching coach and manager. How do they feel about how Lynch is throwing? How does Lynch feel about how he’s throwing? Two- two pitch is slung out on miss. So that’s three strikeouts in a row for Daniel Lynch. And with that strikeout by Daniel in every Royals strikeout this season, Sunlife Financial and the Royals Foundation will donate to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City. The batter is Tyler Stevenson. Tyler, right-handed hitting catcher, and he takes ball one low and inside. He was a big part of Cincinnati’s offense in the game yesterday. Two singles, a two-run home run. He drove in three swing and a miss and they count one and one and Lynch getting a lot of swings and misses and specifically with the change up and the knuckle curve against right-handed hitters. The off speed and breaking stuff has been sharp. One-1 pitch crowed him in on the hands and two balls in one strike. Signal given. The two-1 pitch made and it’s hammered to deep center. Back goes Isbel to the track to the wall and gone. Stevenson. Tyler Stevenson with home runs in successive games. That pitch was not anywhere but Daniel Lynch wanted it. Stevenson was glad to accept it and he drilled it over the fence in center field. So, it’s one to nothing in favor of the Reds. He was trying to probably trying to throw a fast ball up and away to Stevenson to change the eye level. Instead, he left it up and right down the middle. And now Spencer Steer, the batter, hitting 222. And he takes outside ball one. We’re talking about how important it is for shutting down Cincinnati in the first inning. this pitch way over the head of Perez and all the way back to the screen. You probably heard it plunk into the padding directly behind home plate. He counts 2 and 0. I call that a nuclear loose fast ball. Two balls, no strikes. Steer hits right-handed and takes very high. So after the home run, and it happens so often after a home run, the next hitter will draw quite a few pitches and many times draws a walk. There’s a strike. Three and one. Back he comes and very high in ball four. So there you have it. The base on balls following the solo home run by Stevenson. The batter is Gavin Lutz. The off speed stuff, the change up, the breaking pitch, the knuckle curve, those have been good. The forcing fast ball command hasn’t been as sharp for Lynch so far tonight. And we saw that his last couple of appearances, too. He walked five total his last two appearances. Luck sitting 292 and he takes a hack at the first pitch and no contact with the slider. One on, one out, one in. Lefty against lefty. There goes the runner from first. The pitch outside. The throw to second is there to get it. Was a terrible jump on first base by Spencer Ste. It looked for all the world like a busted hit and run play. So, somebody may have missed a sign that was ill-fated from the very beginning. Now, a foul ball right at the feet of home plate umpire Ron Pulpa. One and two on Gavin Lux. The Royals have been the stingiest team when it comes to allowing stolen bases. They’ve only allowed nine steals all year long. There’s a pitch outside. And at that, that was just the 17th time a team has even tried to steal against the Royals this season. In comes the pitch and it’s a little bit low and outside. I’m still fairly convinced that might have been a hit and run and the sign was missed. Just judging by the jump and the way the hitter responded. There’s a ground ball fair past third up the left field line. Waters gets to it in a hurry. Runner to second, sliding it out. Waters hustling into foul ground on that ground ball past third and up the line. He came up throwing and Gavin Lux trying to slide in feet first and he is out at second and Lynch out of the inning. There was some weird base running by the Reds. They lost a couple of men at second base. Let’s see if we can figure out the following baseball slang term. Next phrase is oppo taco. Do you know what it means? Oppo taco. A home run hit to the opposite field. Austin with a taco. His 13th and it’s a one- run game. Brady Singer goes to work and the first pitch to Mikel Garcia finds the strike zone and it’s nothing and one. Garcia with five home runs. Batting average 309. Right-handed hitter hits it hard and out into left field. The short stop Dela Cruz. The Royals have their leadoff man on and up comes Drew Waters. I’ll make it a 12game hitting streak for Michael Garcia. Blue Waters up there left-handed switch hitter. Brady Singer suffered the loss in his last outing. That was in Pittsburgh. Turns and flips on over to first. Garcia, who has stolen 10, is back safely. He has 10 steals, but he’s been caught seven times. That is not a good ratio. There’s a fast ball away upstairs and one ball, no strikes. Drew Waters 0 for one in the game last night. Singer looks at first. A fly ball pretty well hit the left but playable for Hayes who’s circling around out there and now makes the catch and there’s Garcia halfway down to second and now with the throw coming from outfield he goes back to first and there’s one away brings up John Rae. John went 0 for two last night. made his big league debut last night with better conditions tonight. It rained throughout the game last night. Goes after the first pitch and got ahead of an off speed pitch. Rolled it fouled. No balls, one strike. Rave hits as he throws left-handed. Little bigger lead for Garcia. Too big for Singer who turns and throws to first back. IA inching off the bag at first and there he goes and the pitch is swung on and popped up. Foul territory off third. Despal to the railing, reaches over and makes a backhanded catch right at the Hardy suite just beyond the third base dugout. Well, that’s actually the camera well. Then beyond that is the party sweep, but both present a railing for an oncoming defender. And Espenol made a nice play. So, Michael Massie to the plate and just a singer was ready to throw. He backed off the rubble. The Ravens thinking, “Hey, that big TV camera couldn’t have gotten in the way a little bit. Let me see another pitch.” Not to be. There’s a fast ball up and the catcher was ready to snap a throw to second as Garcia made a bluff move toward the bag at second base. In comes a pitch and a line drive into right field. That’s a single around second. On his way to third is Garcia and it’s first and third. Two out for Massie. A sharp single. It’s pause for station identification on the Royals baseball network. What’s up Kansas City? This is Jonathan India here and this is 965 the fan your home for Royals baseball. KFNC FM and AF HD1 and HD2 Kansas City in Odyssey Sports Station. Kyle Isbel comes up with runners first and third, two out, one to nothing Cincinnati as the Royals bat in the second inning. Miles batting average 270. Brady Singer’s pitch is a little bit low on outside. Ball one. Is Bell 0 for three last night has hit in 17 of his last 24 and a swing and a miss. One ball, one strike. It’s now 34 hits driven in 14 runs. Marci is at third with the tying run. Massie is at first. Ground ball through the middle then gets into center field. The game is tied around second on his way to third. So comes through with a ground ball single and the Royals have tied the game with three singles here in the second inning. If any team knows what to expect from Brady Singer. It’s the Royals and Isbel got a sinker that Isbel or that Singer was trying to go front hip over the inner edge and it bled out over the outer half of the plate and Isbel was ready for it. And what we saw over Singer the last several years when that sinker is working to lefties over the inner edge he’s nearly unhitable. When it bleeds a little bit more over the outer half that’s when teams can punish him. Now India who grounded to third his first at bat. It’s a breaking ball and it’s a strike and it’s 0 and one. We mentioned Singer’s last outing, his loss to the Pirates in Pittsburgh. He went five innings, gave up five hits, but four walks. There’s a pitch outside and one ball, one strike on Jonathan India. Each team has scored a run in the second. The Royals are still at work. The pitch was tempted to swing. That pitch is outside. Two balls, one strike. India won out of four in the game last night trying to get Massie home from third. Fast ball outside edge, strike called, and the count is even at two and two. Kyle Isbel now has 15 runs batted in first. Nassie at third and Singer two pitch. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a hit. Massie scores. It’s two to one. This Bell starts at second. Four singles off Singer here in the inning. India got a little help from the pitcher mound on that one. India hit it up the middle. It kicked off the front of the mound and that gave it some extra top spin up the middle just to the left of the second base bag and neither Lux nor De La Cruz could get there. So now Bobby Whit stole the base in the first inning. to runners first and second. So Brady having a tough time getting out of this inning. Big swing by Whit. No contact is 0 and one. India’s RB giving him 13. So the Royals doing some business with balls through the middle. There’s a pitch missing high and away. The ball wouldn’t strike the wick. Steer at first is playing way off the line which means that India can get a huge lead all the way out to where he’s playing one- one pitch. Then Whit goes to the opposite field, skies one out to the right field of Benson who moves toward the corner to make the catch and end the inning. But the Royals come up with a pair and take the lead. End of two, Royals two, Cincinnati one. Your day in baseball starts with MLB Central. Let’s get it started. So, one bomb by the Reds and singles from the Royals. And the Royals lead by one. Jake. All right, Denny. Thanks. Jose Trevinho leads off for the Reds. Daniel Lynch the fourth stays on. He delivers a first pitch fast ball knee high. Inner half called strike one. Lynch threw 34 pitches through the first two innings and now starting a bullpen game today. He’s back on the mound for the third inning. He delivers way high and outside. Goes all the way to the back stop and the count’s now one and one. It’s Trevvinho to lead off the number eight hitter in the lineup. Then Will Benson, a left-handed hitter on deck. And then the lefty TJ Fredel in the hole at the top of the lineup. Here’s the pitch. Rhino hits it in the air right center field. John Rae glides over from right. Standing in the gap, he makes the catch. One up, one down in the top of the third. And that brings up Will Benson. The Royals do have action in the bullpen. Right-hander Jonathan Bolan is getting loose. And wouldn’t that be another poetic thing to happen tonight as far as the pitching is concerned? Already a full circle pitching matchup with Lynch and Singer. First pitch to Benson outside ball one. And it appears as though the next pitcher into the game for the Royals is another guy drafted in 2018 in Jonathan Bolan. Here’s the pitch. licked foul out of play off to the left and the count’s now one and one. Benson had a sacrifice fly yesterday. He was 0 for four otherwise. Been a little bit cooler. Here’s the pitch line foul. Third base side off the top of the netting. One and two. Benson did get off to a redot start in early May when he was called up. Lynch is ready from the third base side of the rubber. He turns, kicks the right leg, delivers. Swung on and miss. Strike three. Got him with a change up below the zone. Four strikeouts for Lynch. And now there are two outs in the top of the third inning. Back in the top of the Red’s lineup and TJ Fredel. So really solid stuff from Lynch starting the bullpen game for the Royals. Now, who would have thought we’d see this, you know, even five years ago, but further than that, Lynch delivers and Fredel bunts. Third base side. Garcia charges. Lynch picks it up. It pops out of his glove. Fredel safe at first. He’s got a bunt hit. Now, if Lynch had left it for Garcia, then Garcia might have had a shot at it. Fel runs really well and it was an excellent bunt. And that’s the end of the line for Daniel Lynch the fourth. After he faces the lefty Fredel, Matt Petero comes out of the first base dugout and makes the point to the bullpen. And from one 2018 draft pick, the Royals turn to another in Jonathan Bolan. Runner on first, two outs. We’re in the top of the third. Royals two, Reds one. At the University of Missouri, Kansas City, we know our world class success. Those hand. Let’s see if we can figure out the following baseball slang term. Next phrase is oppo taco. Your moments like this and more on the MLB app and MLB.com lead the Reds two to one. Any passino leads off then Salvador Perez and then Mikel Garcia against Red’s right-hander Brady Singer. That’s still weird seeing Brady on the mound at Kaufman Stadium and not in a Royals jersey. He’s gone on the road grays for the Reds tonight. First pitch to passino. Sinker hit high in the air deep to left field. Hayes drifts back, angles toward the corner. He’s under it and makes the catch. One pitch, one out for Singer. Brings up Salvador Perez. Boris Singer’s former battery mate. We were talking about the 2019 draft yesterday with John Rae making his debut. It’s now eight players from that Royals draft class that have reached the big leagues. The 2018 draft has also been successful. First pitch to Salvi is a sinker knee high called strike and it’s 0 and one. And you’ll remember that 2018 draft well. So many pitchers, college pitchers specifically. The 01. Salvi rips it down into left field. A base hit. A one out single for Salvador Perez. And he’s on it first. That brings up Mikel Garcia who extended his hitting streak to 12 games with his single in the second. Royals two Reds won were in the bottom of the third. On that 2018 draft, the Royals selected Brady Singer, Jackson Coar, Daniel Lynch the fourth, Jonathan Bolan, Austin Cox, Jonathan Heasley, all of them pitchers that reach the big leagues with the Royals. The pitch blowing outside, one ball, no strikes. and Chris Bubich of course who won’t pitch in this game but wouldn’t it be fun if he did if all the 2018 guys got together one pitch and it’s over the outer edge of strike and it’s one and onear is now with the Mariners Cox is now with the Braves Easley was most recently with the White Socks during spring training the 1-1 it’s a little bit low two balls one strike but how bold was it? And and looking back the 2020 hindsight successful those five picks in the first 40 and all five and you mentioned the other guys too but all getting to the major leagues the 2-1. Garcia pops it up on the infield behind the mound near the second base bag and the second baseman Gavin Lux calls for it and makes the catch two gone. It was certainly a strategy and well the initial returns on that strategy were lukewarm but given how high they’ve been drafted and how highly touted they were but for the way that most of those guys are making the impact that they are Singer Bou Lynch Bowling a lot of success from that draft. Here’s the pitch. Drew Waters takes a sinker just outside but called a strike and it’s 0 and one. And as far as the position players go, don’t forget Kyle Isel was a 2018 draft pick and he’s been the Royals main center fielder the last several years. Singer delivers and Waters swings and misses at a letter high cutter. It’s 0 and2 now. Point being, if you were a fan of the 2019 Wilmington Blue Rocks, this is the game for you. Singer delivers and the pitch is down and in. One ball, two strikes. All of these guys were there together at Frolley Stadium in Wilmington. And no doubt the pitchers loved it. That ballpark in the Carolina League at the time was famous for being a graveyard. Here’s the pitch inside. Two balls, two strikes on Waters. Runner on first with two outs. Royals up two to one. Here’s the pitch. Check swing on a pitch down and in. And Waters held. The count’s now full. Three and two. So Salvi gets a head start at first base with a full count and two outs. Here’s the pitch. Chopped up the first baseline. Foul. And it’s still three and two. Waters flight out to left his first time up. He’s been relatively consistent this year, but especially as a left-handed hitter. You might not have realized, but Drew Waters is batting over 300 as a left-handed hitter this year. He’s batting an even 200 when he hits righty. Batting lefty here and the pitch. Waters dribbles it foul. First base side. Still three and two. It’s now an even 50 pitches for Singer, 30 of them for strikes. And Denny told you about his most recent start against the Pirates. He five innings, but he also threw a season high 102 pitches in those five innings. A lot of deep counts and the four walks. Another payoff and it’s in there. Called strike three. A sinker knee high over the inner half. Wers tossed the bat away. He got fooled and he knows it. First strike out of the game for Brady Singer. He’s through three innings. We go to the fourth with the Royals. Take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager said the following. I really don’t know what to say. I’m just uh so happy I gave something. Jonathan Bolan is back on the mound for the top of the fourth inning. He needed just one pitch to end the top of the third. He faces Ellie de la Cruz, then Austin Hayes, and then Tyler Stevenson. 345 in manager Terry Frankona’s lineup. That’s right. Tito is back in the skipper chair, and he’s moved across the state of Ohio from Cleveland to Cincinnati after taking a year off last season. Ellie de la Cruz bats left-handed for the first time tonight. And Bowlolan delivers. First pitch fast ball flies high. And that’s ball one. Adela Cruz has been a much better hitter, not just this year, but in his career when he’s hit lefty as opposed to hitting righty. Bolan delivers blowing outside with a change up and the count’s now two balls no strikes. This season Cruz is hitting 276 as a lefty. He’s hitting just 200 as a righty. Poland delivers and it’s high. Three balls, no strikes. This is the second time that Ellie de la Cruz has played at Kaufman Stadium. Made his major league debut a couple of years ago in early June. And then the Reds came here to the K. The three-0 pitch. Da Cruz takes a big swing. Comes up empty at a fast ball. Three and one. And Da Cruz had taken baseball by storm early on. He’d hit safely in each of his first six games. He was the thing, the sensation, and deservedly so. still is to some degree. Here’s the pitch. Baseball in for a strike and it’s three and two. But then de la Cruz went cold here at the K. He was 0 for 12 in that series and then just one for 11 in the three game set between these two teams last year in Cincinnati. For whatever reason, the Royals have been his kryptonite early on in his electric career. Payoff pitch. Da Cruz laces it deep to straightaway center. Isbel sprints back at the track, looks up, it’s gone. Well, Superman wins some battles every now and again, too. And De La Cruz hits a game tying home run, nodded at two in the top of the fourth inning. 10th home run of the season for LA de la Cruz. In addition to his speed, he has predigious power. That was a 436 ft blast to straightaway center and on a line at that brings up Austin Hayes who’s 0 for one with a strike in. Here’s the pitch. Hayes laces it to straightaway left and Waters is there who makes the grab, lunging to his right. One away. brings up Tyler Stevenson who homered himself back in the second inning. A solo shot to center. That was against Daniel Lynch. The fourth. So, Royals and Reds tied at two in the top of the fourth inning. Base is empty with one out. Here’s the pitch. Fast ball over the high outside edge called strike. And it’s 0 and one. 96 mph heat from Jonathan Bolan who’s a full-time reliever for the first time in his career. Here’s the pitch blowing outside. One and one. He’d been a starter ever since the Royals drafted him. Second round out of the University of Memphis. He was a starter really up until midway through last season. That’s when he started coming out of the bullpen with the stormchasers. The 1-1 swung out and missed and the count’s now one and two. His path to the big leagues was far from linear. He was one of the top pitching prospects in the organization back in 2021. Started off his double A career, but then after just a few starts with the Naturals, he needed Tommy John surgery. came back from that late in 2022. Here’s the pitch. Slider knee high called strike three. Stevenson’s down looking. Two outs in the top of the fourth. And now Spencer Steer comes to the plate. The Bolan ultimately made his major league debut at the tail end of the 2023 season and that was in relief. We saw him for a spot start in Toronto last year and he’s impressed out of the bullpen this season. First pitch to Steer, swung on and missed and it’s 0 and one. First pitch slider and that’s been the pitch that has really elevated Bolan’s game out of the bullpen. He can locate that slider. It is lethal. The 01. There’s another slider just off the plate away and the count’s now one and one. He pairs that with a mid to upper 90s fast ball that out of the bullpen is a little bit more giddy up as you’d say. The 1-1 fast ball high and it’s two and one. Sitting around 96 mph tonight, but we’ve seen him at 97 98 and he’s hit 99 before. Not quite 100, at least not yet. But with his frame, he could get there. The 2-1 fast ball popped up foul over the back stop netting out of play. And the count’s now two and two on Spencer Steer. Now, Bolan so far this season has only given up two runs. They’ve both been on solo homers. One to Dea Cruz in this inning and the other to Matt Chapman last week in San Francisco. Here’s the pitch. Check swing and a slider in the dirt. Steer went around strike three. Backto back hays for Jonathan Bolan and that ends the top of the fourth inning. The Reds do pull even on Da Cruz’s solo home run. And so we head to the bottom of the fourth with the Royals and Reds tied at two. This is Steve Stewart alongside moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921. Smith courts went in right down the line. It may go crazy, folks. Goes crazy. It’s a home run. And the Cardinals have won the game by the star of three to two. And a home run by the Wizard. That’s Mike Piaza after he hit an eighth inning go-ahad home run in the first New York Mets home game after 911. Hear moments like this and more on the MLB app and MLB.com. June 14th. Bottom of the fourth inning at Kaufman Stadium. Royals and Reds tied at two. And John Rave leads off the bottom of the fourth. Ray Singer delivers. First pitch slider curls in for a strike and it’s 0 and one. Braves 0 for one. Fouled out back in the second inning. Still in search of his first big league hit. Singer delivers. And Rafe chops it up the first baseline. Just foul quickly 0 and2. Well Ra was with the Stormchasers in Salt Lake City on Sunday and he had to actually leave their game while it was still happening. That game went to extras. And what John told us yesterday, he had to sneak out a little bit, head to the airport, make sure he caught his flight to Kansas City for yesterday’s game. 02 now. Check swinging a slider low. He held one ball, two strikes. And sure enough, John Rae needed a ride to the airport. And luckily enough, Drew Sailor was there to help him out. Royals hitting coordinator. The pitch just inside two and two. And those two have known each other really since Raith got drafted. Sailor joined the Royals organization in the fall of 2019. Here’s the pitch. Ra chops it off the plate. Foul first base side. Two and two. And so it was extra special for the two of them to share that ride at the airport for Drew having helped a player continue to showcase his skills and put him in positions to succeed. And for John, someone that he’s trusted and leaned on and has sought advice from the pitch down and in. Three balls, two strikes on John Ray. And Drew said that was really special to be a fly on the wall for the conversations in the car that John had with his wife and his mom and his other family members. Payoff pitch from Singer. Rolled foul first base side. Still three and two on John Ray. And John’s not the only member of his family that had a bit of an odyssey to Kansas City. He said that his wife Amy was in Salt Lake City. She drove out there. She had to drive back to the area. Probably figured she was driving back to Omaha and ultimately just wound up making a pit stop there coming back from Salt Lake City and then had to turn and drive south down I 29 for the big league debut yesterday. Singer delivers. Rave bounces at foul first base side. Still three balls, two strikes. Rave has now seen eight pitches in this plate appearance. He’s fouled off four of them. All sliders and sinkers from Brady Singer in this battle. Here comes another 3-2 pitch to John Ray. Slider popped up straight away center field. TJ Fredel is underneath it and he makes the catch. Brave is out, one gone. For Singer to throw nine pitches though and so that’s now 60 pitches for Brady tonight. Brings up Michael Massie who singled and scored back in the Royals two-run second inning. Royals and Reds tied at two. We’re in the bottom of the fourth. First pitch to Messi down and in. And that’s ball one. Really good result for Michael back in the second inning. Line drive single to right field. Here’s the pitch. Massie hits it high in the air to straightaway center field. Another one for TJ Friedel. He gets underneath it and he makes the catch. Two outs. Now, Massie has had his ups and downs offensively this season and had a really good series in San Francisco before a really cold series in Minnesota. The process has been there. The work behind the scenes has been there. The results haven’t followed as much for Michael. First pitch to Kyle Isbel now and he takes a sweeper knee high strike one. Mike Petrero was asked about Michael Massiey’s offensive performance this season and brought up the work he’s done behind the scenes. Singer delivers a fast ball in for a strike 0 and two. You also made sure to mention that even if the offensive results haven’t been there, he has played an outstanding defensive second base and that is also really valuable. No balls, two strikes on Isbel, who drove in the Royals first run with a single back in the second. The pitch down the middle, called strike three. Singer fooled him with a sinker. Second strike out for Singer and a one, two, three. Bottom of the fourth inning. We’re off to the fifth at Kaufman Stadium. Royals and Red. Take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager said the following. I really don’t know what to say. I’m just uh so happy I gave something these people cheer. But we all did. I mean, it was a great game. Both teams played incredible. It was a great game. That’s Mike Piaza after he hit an eighth inning go-ahad home run in the first New York Mets home game after 911. Moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921. Smith Clarks went in to right down the line. They go crazy, folks. Go crazy. It’s a home run and the Cardinals have won the game. I’m the star of three to two and a home run by the Wizards. Catch the next unforgettable call on the MLB app and MLB.com. Stew to left-hander Evan Cis who’s pitching for his second straight day. He sure is. And uh we’ll see how he does against Gavin Lux, Jose Trevinho, and Will Benson. Lefty, righty, lefty. The bottom third of the order against this lefty Evans Cisk, the Royals third pitcher on the night is called to the bullpen powered by Wholesale Batteries. Any battery anytime delivered anywhere at wholesale batteries.net leftended hitting Lux will take a breaking ball a little bit high for a ball. Lux singled his first time up. He actually was thrown out at second trying to stretch it to a double. Oils do have Taylor Clark warming now though perhaps in just for these three. We’ll see. And there’s the slider and the batter tried to check his swing but Lux goes around and it’s a 1-1 count. So CIS yesterday seventh and eighth innings gave up one run on two hits. The pitch and a slider misses low. Two and one the count. He threw 33 pitches to get those six outs just yesterday. And here he is hoping to pitch. You would think an inning here if he can get through three outs. Next one. And a slider’s a beauty. A called strike on Lux the ex do Dodger who’s hitting 292 on the year. 14 doubles, a triple, one home run. Fields shading him around to the right. Outfield playing him to hit the other way. 2-2. Slider fouled back to the netting by former first round pick by the Dodgers, Gavin Lux. It’s a two- two game here in the top of the fifth. Evan Cisk comes set now. He deals and it’s called strike three with a fast ball. So he strikes out Gavin Lux for the first out of the inning. Of course, there’s a minimum. You got to face at least three batters. You come out of that pen. He gets the first batter he faces. Now, it’s right-handed hitting. Jos Trevinho, former Ranger and Yankee, first year with Cincinnati. He flat out to shallow right his first time. Right-handed hitter will take a strike on the outside corner. Evan Cis with that distinctive kind of you would think distracting delivery for hitters. Certainly a lot of elbows and knees coming their way from the left side. Cross body. There’s a pitch inside. One and one the count. He had a magical minor league season last year and saw him a bit in spring training. He’s on. He can be awfully tough. Here’s a 1-1 and a swing and a fast ball fouled out of play off to the right here in the fifth inning. Tied at two. this drafted by the Cardinals, traded to Minnesota, then this is all as a minor league, then traded Royals a couple years ago with Steven Cruz, who we’ve told you about many times. And then Michael A. Taylor deal. Here’s the one, two, and a slider. Miss is down and in as Drevinho holds up with his swing and the count is even at two and two. Rinho is having a very nice offensive season. Of course, a very good defensive catcher. He came in at 298 with three homers, 12 doubles. Pitch, swing, slice or foul down the right side. Vinnie giving it a look as he goes into foul territory, but that’s out of play down the right side as we have a a night of dry baseball. Quite the relief after these players played through raindrops on Memorial Day. A cool night, but not bad. Little breeze. 63 when we started. Two and two and the pitch and a swing and a liner towards center. On the run is Isbel. He’ll play it on a hop and Drevinho has a one out single to center. It’s a one-on-one out for the number nine hitter Will Benson who struck out his first time. Another left-handed batter. And there’s a left-handed batter on deck as well. And TJ Fredel, but we’ll see if this is the last batter for Cis. Maybe he gets a double play ball. Finishes the inning right here. You’d think if the inning would extend to Santiago Espol a righty. The Royals do have Taylor Clark warming up in the bullpen. Lefty lefty here. Cy number 47 deals and a slider misses low ball one on Will Benson who was briefly a Cleveland Guardian. He was a first round pick by then. Now he’s gone from Northeast Ohio to Southwest Ohio. The pitch a slider misses down and in gets away from Salvi. Runner takes off. Salvi does not make a throw as the ball got away over toward the first base side. Salvi had to go away a while to get it and Trevinho read it well, took off for second and he’s in scoring position now. Second base with one down and a two and0 count on Will Benson. Wild pitch charge to Eban Cisk. Benson waits. Here’s the pitch and a fast ball right down the middle is a called strike. Cisk is 6’2. He’s 28. And like the guy in the bullpen right now, he went to College of Charleston. Here’s the pitch. And a slide is a call. Shrike. Taylor Clark was there just ahead of CIS. And the guy the Royals saw Sunday starting for Minnesota was teammates with both guys. Haley Ober the big righty two and two now on Will Benson runner at second one out just try to keep it tied to two and the pitch and a slider inside and Benson able to check his swing apparently and so it’s full count so threw 33 pitches yesterday 17 tonight that’s 50 over a couple of days leads from second base and field swung around to the right three and two and the pitch on the lefty in a slider misses inside. Ball four. So, a strike out, a single, a wild pitch, and now a walk. And they’re at first and second with one out for another left-handed batter. The leadoff man in their batting order tonight, TJ Feder, their center fielder. He’s flyed to right and he has a bunt single tonight as well. First and second, one out. pitch swing and a foul off by Fredel. Came in 289, three homers and three doubles on the year. He’s drawn 13 walks 0 and one now. The pitch from Cisk and a slider misses away and it’s a 1-1 count. Well, no matter what happens in his plate appearance, you’d think this is probably it for Cisk. He’d love a double play ball and just get the inning over with. Here’s the 1-1 pitch and a slider misses outside and it’s two and one hitters count for Fredel. Right-handed hitting. Santiago Espanol is on deck and the Royals have right-hander Taylor Clark loosening. Open stance for Fedel. Fin at second, Benson at first. The pitch is a slider that misses way outside. You see a little frustration from Cisk on that delivery after he yanked it down and away. And Salvi’s going to jog out to the mound and give his pitcher a little bit of a breather. It’s been a kind of a grind of a couple of days. It’s can often be feast or famine when you’re a relief pitcher. Sometimes you sit for days on end and then you’re called in a critical situation. Sometimes a long outing. Sometimes you come back and have to pitch the next day and Cisco is being asked to do that here. Trying to keep it 2-2 and he’s fallen behind Freedle. Three balls and one strike. First and second, one out. Two five and0 for each team. And the 3-1. And it’s down and away. Ball four. He missed for the sinker. And that’s going to load the bases. And here comes M. Petero. They’re loaded. Taylor Clark is warming up. Right-handed batter Santiago Espanol is coming up. He’ll face a new pitcher in a two- two game. Bobby Wood Jr. here for Community America to talk to you about profit payout. Now, I don’t mean to get off in your finances and be a real busy Bobby. He’s having a excellent season for the Royals after beginning the year in Omaha. And his first save of the year, eighth of his career Sunday at Target Field. First save since September of 23. He’s logged eight and a third scoreless innings to start the year. Right-handed hitting Espenol 0 for two. He struck out and flyed out. Base is loaded, one out. Rose love a double play ball. First pitch and it’s a breaking ball down and away. Ball one. Well, you’d love a double play ball because Ellie de la Cruz is looming on deck. Espenol up for a third time. Number four in that road grey uniform for Cincinnati. Right-handed hitter. Stand straight up at the plate. Feet close together. Here’s the pitch and he swings. bounced it to third. Once again, Brady faces his longtime friend Jonathan India. Lead off for the Royals here in the fifth inning. Jonathan tonight is one for two against his buddy. He’s grounded a third and he’s singled up the middle. Brady Singer back to work first pitch and it’s a fast ball and it’s a called strike. That’s Brady’s 66th pitch of the night as he works here in the fifth inning in a two- two game. Each team with five hits. Next one from Brady Singer. Slider misses low. One ball, one strike. Now Brady drafted in 18 as Jake was talking about. And he got to the big leagues pretty quickly. Here’s the 1-1 pitch and he swings and misses. Got a slider and it’s one and two on India. He’ll be followed by Whit and Pasquantino if somebody gets on Salvi, but Brady that co season because of injuries to other members of the staff. Royals probably didn’t want to bring him up very early in that 20 season, but they did and he did okay. There’s a pitch inside. It almost hit India. It’s two and two on the Royals DH tonight, but Brady is he was a a big big boost to this rotation for many years here in Kansas City. Two- two pitch swing and a slider. Fly ball to center. Over toward left center is Freedel. He’s under it. He’s got it. The center fielder puts it away and Jonathan’s now one out of three against Brady Singer. Here’s Bobby Wit Jr. Bobby has walked, stolen a base flying to right tonight. So, if that’s the last time that India faces Singer today, who gets bragging rights? Because the one hit drove in a run. Yeah. And he’s and he and he’s batting 333 against him this year. That sounds pretty good. I guess it’s all about what the score is at the end of the game. First pitch to Bobby up and in and he leans away from it. All one on Bobby Wit Jr. And the one to Bobby swings, shoots it the other way toward right center, but a good jump and the center fielder Freel runs it down in the alley to put it away and retire Bobby. So two quick outs for Brady Singer. Just what he needs, just what Cincinnati wants to see. Couple of quick outs of India and win. And now it’s red hot Pascantino. Vinnie is flying out to left field in the opposite field. all times he’s been up tonight. And in the third inning, it was on the first pitch he saw for Brady Singer. There’s a called strike. And not only do both teams have two runs, both teams have five hits and it’s still 2-2. Thanks to Taylor Clark, like you said, Stu, wriggled out of a bases loaded jam with a double play ball. First pitch now to Ellie de la Cruz and he takes a change up outside ball one. Clark got an around the horn double play ball. Five to four to three to get out of a bases loaded one out jam in the fifth and strand a pair. He delivers and de la Cruz drills it high in the air deep to right center headed for the fountains and gone. Upper T for Ellie de la Cruz his second home run of the game and the Royals now trail 3-2 in the top of the sixth inning. That is what Ellie de la Cruz can do. So now 11 home runs this season for De La Cruz. And that one went 451 ft and left the bat at 112 1/2 m an hour. He’s just shy of 900 ft worth of home runs tonight. You do not see very many balls in a game go upper tank the second deck of the Fountains. First pitch to Austin Hayes and he waves and misses for strike one. Stu, do you remember spring training this year? We were in Goodyear and the Royals were facing the Reds and Dea Cruz hit a line drive home run in that game. Okay. Does this ring a bell at all? Yeah. 01 pitch. Dribbled foul first base side. 0 and2. All I remember is it was a line drive home run that hit the top of the team bus and broke a window in Cincinnati. He was hit so hard. It was just on a straight line. Wonder if he got fined. One thing you do it as a little kid. When you’re a big leager, they let you do it. The O2 down and in. One ball, two strikes. And bring up that home run, that swing from spring training because we hadn’t yet seen what the rest of baseball had seen from Dela Cruz. And obviously we hoped that we wouldn’t, but tonight we certainly have. the one-two blowing outside. Two balls, two strikes now on Austin Hayes. The only silver lining is in both cases he was leading off an inning. And how crucial is that double play ball now? Yeah. Royals down three to two. Top of the six. Base is empty. Nobody out. The two- two swung on and miss. Strike three. Clark tied him up with a change up. So, one out now in the top of the sixth. We pause 10 seconds for station ID on the Royals baseball network. This is the all new 965 The fan, your new home for Royals baseball. KFNC FMA HD1 and HD2 Kansas City in Odyssey Sports Station. Royals down 3 to2. Top of the sixth inning. Base is empty, one out. First pitch to Tyler Stevenson and he takes a slider for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Thanks for joining us tonight with Denny Stew and Eric. I’m Jake. Game two of this three-game series between the Royals and Reds. Here’s the pitch up and away. And the counts now one and one. These teams will face each other once a season for the foreseeable future. Now with the balanced schedule here this year, Cincinnati next year, so on and so forth. The pitch blowing outside and the count’s now two balls and one strike. The Royals are 21 and 18 all time against the Reds. Three and four since this rivalry of sorts reignited a couple of years ago. Clark delivers and Stevenson calls it straight back two and two. The Royals got swept here in 2023 and then they did the sweeping there last year. The Reds took the series opener last night. Here’s the pitch. Change up down and in. And the counts now three balls, two strikes on Tyler Stevenson. Here’s the payoff pitch. Hopped to foul first base side. Out of play. Still three balls, two strikes on Stevenson. Thought this was a neat note from the Reds. This is right up Curtain Nelson’s alley. The first time the Reds were here at Kaufman Stadium was June of 1999. That was the first time they played here. Payoff pitch foul tipped into Salv. Strike three. Clark got him with a slider. Backto back Kes for Taylor Clark. Two outs in the top of the six. That brings up Spencer Steer. Here’s the fun part. Prior to 1999, the last time that the Reds franchise had played in Kansas City was over a hundred years prior when it was the Reding the Cowboys in Kansas City of the American Association. Taylor Clark delivers in steer, flicks it in the air straightaway center. Isbell’s got it lined up and he makes the catch to end the inning. How’s that a for a blast for the pass? The Red Stockings and the Cowboys Okay, now take a hack at guessing which baseball player or maner said the following. I really don’t know what to say. I’m just uh so happy I gave something. The Royals hit a grand slam out of the park in this inning. Linda wins 25 grand from Sonic and the Kansas City Royals. Salvador Perez leads off the bottom of the sixth against Brady Singer. Royals down three to2. Here’s the pitch blowing outside. Ball one. 75 pitches now for Singer who’s somewhat quietly retired eight consecutive batters. He delivers and Salvi chops it softly toward third. Aspenol charges, scoops, runs toward first and now throws and makes the playing time. One away. So Singer has now retired nine straight. And more than that, he’s retired 11 of the last 12 that he’s faced. Going back to Jonathan India’s two out RBI single back in the second. That’s when the Royals got both of their runs tonight. Four singles in the second inning. Three consecutive singles with two outs. First pitch to Mike El Garcia. He shows bun, pulls the bat back and takes a slider for a strike. It’s 0 and one, but Garcia is the last Royal to reach base. That was his single back in the third inning. Singer delivers. Sinker kneeh high called strike 0 and two. It’s good to catch up with Brady yesterday. He held court in the Reds dugout on the visitors side. Here’s the pitch. Punched foul out of play off of the right. Still 0 and2. And he was asked, as you’d expect him to be, about his time in Kansas City getting drafted here, making his debut here pitching in the playoffs here. And what his fondest memories of his time with the Royals were, and how things are going with the Reds, what it’s been like, and how weird does it feel to be wearing a different color and coming out of the visitors dugout, so on and so forth. Here’s the pitch. Sinker just low. One ball, two strikes. And Brady made a point to talk about not just the on the- field experiences, but the off the- field experiences. He said he really feels as though he grew up here. The pitch outside. No. Called strike three. Caught the edge. That was about a ball off the plate. And Garcia goes back to the dugout muttering. Third strike out for Singer. All three have been looking. And now there are two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Up Drew Waters who’s 0 for two with a strike out. First pitch to Waters. Hit sharply through the right side of base into right field. Two out single for Waters. He’s the first Royal to reach base since the third inning. And that snatched a stretch of 10 consecutive batters retired for Singer. brings up John Rain and you know and it’s time for John’s first big league hit. I think so too. He’s 0 for two tonight with a foul out and a fly out though. He did see nine pitches his last time up and fouled off a handful of first pitch to Rave. Waters takes off. Pitches in for a strike. Throw to second. Short stop side of the bag. No tack drive from Da Cruz. Waters is safe. He’s got a steal now into scoring position. And well, John Rves first big league hit could tie the game. Royals down three-2 and the bottom of the sixth inning. Infield has shifted to the right side against Rave. Here’s the pitch. It’s a slider outside. One and one. Now, one thing that Rave has improved with offensively is taking pitches that move laterally, horizontally, and going the other way with that. Here’s the pitch down and in two and one. That’s specifically sliders and sinkers, which is what Brady Singer mostly throws. And so this could be one of those situations where the stars align and you have an improved skill of going the other way against those types of pitches against an infield shaded the opposite way. The pitch slider dribbled up the first baseline. Singer off the bump picks it up tags Rave and that ends the inning. So the Planets stay unal alive and Rave remains hitless as a big leager. Royal stranded runner in scoring position. We go to the seventh. Great moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921. Smith courts went into right down the line. Royals trail the Reds 3 to2. Kayla Clark stays on the mound for his second full inning. He’s already thrown an inning and a third tonight. He faces Gavin Lux, left-handed hitter who’s one for two tonight. First pitch to Lux. Swung out and missed and it’s 0 and one. Both teams have six hits tonight. Now the difference in the game is that half of the Reds hits have been home runs. Solo shots from Tyler Stevenson and Ellie de la Cruz who has a pair. Oh, one pitch over the inner edge. A called strike and it’s 0 and two on Gavin Lux. The Reds in fact only have one at bat with runners in scoring position. That was Santiago Espenol who grounded into that inning ending double play in the fifth. Here’s the pitch down and away. One ball, two strikes on Lux. The Reds have stranded three on base. The Royals have stranded five. The Royals have gone two for five with runners in scoring position. Clark delivers and Lux floats it shallow right field. Rave got a late start now sprints in. He catches up and makes the catch itself and Lux is out one away. Ra is showing what we’ heard and expected that he is surefooted and surehanded in the outfield whether it’s center, right, or left and it’s been right for his first two major league games. Now, Jose Trovinho, who’s one for two tonight, open stands on the right side for the Red’s catcher. The pitch, fast ball fouled straight back off the netting, and it’s 0 and one. Royals down three to two. Top of the seventh inning, trying to even this series at a game a piece. The runs have been hard to come by for the Royals. Another lowscoring game, another tight game. Similar script. Here’s the pitch. Line to deep right field. Ra shuffles back. Still going, backpedaling, makes the catch right in front of the warning track. And Trovinho’s out. Two gone. He kind of looked like a hockey defenseman on that play. The way that he was shuffling back, the way you see guys on skates skate backwards. Don’t you think? You would know, Denny. hockey player yourself. First pitch to Will Benson. Swung out and missed. 0 and one. If you play defense in that game, you better know how to skate backward. Based on Ra’s footwork, you think he could skate some? I think he could. Yeah. Oh, one pitch outside. One ball, one strike. I guess anybody from Bloomington Normal can skate, right? It won’t go that far. We didn’t have any ranks when I was growing up. The one-1 for a strike one and two. Well, we heard your conversation with John during the pregame show that well some things have changed like the building you went to high school in now erected somewhere else and called a different name. Clark delivers and Benson swings and misses and a fast ball strike three inning over. Such is progress. Such is progress. That’s right. We progress to the bottom of the seventh. Michael Massie leads off then Kyle Isel. Then back to the top of the lineup and Jonathan India against right-hander Brady Singer who ever since the second inning in which the Royals got him for two runs on four hits has been on relative cruise control. He’s allowed just two hits since both singles. First pitch to Michael Massie and he takes inside. Ball one. Massie singled and scored back in the second. Flighted out in the fourth. He’s one for two tonight. Infield shifted to the right side against him. Stinger delivers and Slider misses outside. Two balls, no strikes. Well, Singer has completed seven innings once before this season. It was actually in his Red’s debut. He threw seven shutout innings, only allowed one hit, struck out eight. How’s that for a first impression? The 200 over the inner edge of strike. Two and one. In fact, he was the first Reds pitcher to throw at least seven shutout innings in his Red’s debut since a Hall of Famer did it. Singer delivers down and in three and one. And that would be Hall of Famer Tom Siver who threw a complete game shut out in his Red’s debut in 1977. Here’s the pitch. Massie rips it towards second right. Gavin Lux who hops and makes the grab chin high. Tough luck out for Michael Massie. He hit it 109 off the bat. And there’s one guy now in the seventh. That’s twice in the last few innings that the Royals have really stung one and hit it right at a Red’s infielder. First pitch to Kyle Lisbel now. Slider lifted into straightaway right field. Hangs up for Will Benson. He’s got it. Two outs. And so Singer is now an out away from completing seven innings of two-run ball. But if he wants to do it, he’s got to go through his former college teammate one more time. Jonathan India steps to the plate. One for three tonight with an RBI single. Now before Brady was drafted 18th overall, India was drafted fifth overall. Singer delivers in for a strike 0 and one. June 4th of 2018, the Florida Gator were playing in the Super Regional at their home ballpark in Gainesville. The pitch swung out and missed. 0 and2 Gator actually played two games that day. They lost the first game and that forced a winner take all game against FAU in the super regional. That game started at 9:45 and both India and Singer were drafted that day in the midst of it all. The pitch outside one ball, two strikes on India. Both of them got drafted during the first game. Had a little break, maybe celebrated a little bit. Game two, India hit a home run. Here’s the pitch line towards short over Da Cruz down in the left a base. Two out single for Jonathan India and he’s two for four tonight against his former college teammate and trade counterpart. And now he represents the potential tying run at first with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. And Bobby Wit Jr. steps to the plate. Now the Reds do have action in their bullpen. Ian Jabau has been warming up. Brady Singer’s at 96 pitches and he’s now going through the lineup a fourth time. Jose Trovinho goes out to the mound to have a chat. Gavin Lux comes over from second. No movement from the Red’s dugout, including Terry Francona. And so Brady Singer back on the mound where he grew up, back in the ballpark where he grew up, is getting a chance to finish off a really solid return to Kansas City. Reds off the field maybe, but it’s up to Bobby W Jr. that won’t be the case. He steps to the plate now with the Royals down by one in the bottom of the seventh. Runner on first, two outs. Here’s the pitch. Basketball up and in. And that’s ball one. Bobby’s 0 for two with a walk tonight. Also stolen a base. Got stranded at second it back in the first inning. Here’s the pitch outside. Two balls, no strikes. Infield is shifted to the left side against Whit. Right side is wide open with Steer holding on India at first. Singer delivers and Whit hits it high in the air deep to left field toward the warning track. Hayes is back just shy of the track. He makes the catch and that ends the inning. Now Bobby got under it just a little bit, just enough for it to stay in the ballpark and that ends the seventh. Seven moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921. It’s a one-run game. Expand your vocabulary by listening to every game on the MLB app and mlb.com. We go to the eighth at the K. Royals down three-2. And now John Shriber takes over. This call to the bullpen powered by wholesale batteries. Any battery anytime delivered anywhere at wholesale batteries.net. And so Denny in a bullpen game the Royals turn to their fifth pitcher of the night. And John Shriber who last pitched on Saturday in Minnesota will be confronted by the top of the Cincinnati batting order. And that means TJ Fredel who takes a pitch way outside. Fredel has walked, reached by way of a punt single and hit a fly ball to right. Shriber the right-hander deals and throws a strike and the count is even. When John pitched on Saturday in Minneapolis, he worked a one, two, three, seventh inning. One ball, one strike. Creedle a good swing there. Fouled it straight back in the count. Shriber’s way one and two. Shriber now has four consecutive scoreless outings going back to the 18th of May. One ball, two strikes. Next one to Fredel who’s lined into left field and it’s going to drop in for a hit. So Fredel got a pitch away, went to the opposite field, and he’s on for Espanol. Espenal has gone 0 for three. He’s struck out, fly out to right, and grounded into that double play, which at the moment is one of the key plays in this game. Pitch is made and it’s way outside. Backhanded by Salby. Pretty good lead. Freedle. He’s stolen eight. There’s a good breaking ball for a strike in the count. One ball, one strike. Shriber getting the sign from Salvi now deals and a ground ball foul and Mr. Spinal was taking a shot at the opposite field but hit it foul pass first and the count now one ball two strikes. Shriber hit an air pocket in the middle of May. Go to first. Fredel dives back in head first. John gave up five runs in two games. May 13th, 14, 15, and 16. Prior to that, 11 straight scoreless games. Another shot at the opposite field is fouled off by Espanel. Most people think about baseball player in a slump. They’re talking about hitters, but pictures go through the same thing. And you can see that just looking at those outings by Shriber. His next pitch is fouled off. And that was a defensive swing by Espanol just to stay alive at the plate. TJ Freedel lead off single looks on his lead at first. Pretty good lead. Now the pitch a little number up along third is fouled and still a ball two strikes. So Espanel continues to make contact and hit foul balls. All the while, Ellie Dela Cruz watches the proceedings from the on deck circle. One and two. The count to Santiago Espal Shriber looks at first and pitch little bit low. Didn’t miss by much. Two and two the count. Three to2 Cincinnati. Hits even at seven apiece. Shriber brings it in. Drew is bad at it. Ground ball knocked down by Shriber and from his knees throws widely past first and it deflects up the right field line. Here’s Fredel around third. He’s going to try to score and he takes a dive into home plate heading first to score. Boy, what a goofy play. Espanel literally was trying to stay alive through his bat at the pitch and he chopped it to the left of Shriber who came charging off the mound and then things really turned sour. He just got the tip of his glove on it and he kept chasing it, never giving up on the play and then threw wildly past Denny and the throw deflected and on up the right field line. Fredel was kind of cruising to third, but then when he saw the ball rolling up the right field line, he took off for home. A decent throw might have gotten him at home plate, but it wasn’t. That play really broke down after Shriber got the tip of his glove on the baseball. And the weirdest part about that was the way that the ball ricocheted. It was the throw to past Quintino, but he didn’t actually touch the throw with his glove or his body. Shriber’s throw actually hit Santiago Espenol’s left knee while he was crossing first base. And so Espenol’s left knee was up the right field line and that punched the ball up the right field line and because it carried into the outfield, like you said, Denny, that’s what allowed Fredel to come all the way around and score. But that is just a weird situation where Espenol’s leg swinging through toward first is what sends the ball down the line. So Fredel scores, making it 4 to2 Cincinnati. And needless to say, with first base open, Ellie Dela Cruz with two home runs and both rather sizable home runs. They walk him intentionally. Up comes Austin Hayes. Right-handed batter was tempted to swing, but he held up and one ball no strikes. It was an errand throw from Shriber to be sure and probably an ill-advised one. the way that he was so offbalance after that play. There’s a pitch way outside and now the count is 2 and 0. At that point, you’re better off just holding on to it rather than risk. Well, something like that. Something weird happening. In retrospect, you’re right. But your competitive fire, your intensity says, “I want to get an out at first no matter what.” Now, outside another cutter and count is three balls and no strikes. Wouldn’t be surprised if Espenol’s awarded a hit and then there’s a throwing error from Shriber. Yeah, we await the scoring decision on that. There’s a strike and the count is three and one. Still nobody out. Runners first and second. We are in the eighth. And the 3-1 pitch to Hayes. jammed him and slow roller foul up the first baseline. Full count of three and two. Austin Hayes hitting in the fourth spot. He’s struck out twice. He’s also lined hard to left field. That was back in the fourth inning. Espinol at second. Dela Cruz at first. Three and two the count on Austin Hayes and the Royals hopeful for a ground ball double play. Swinging a miss. So down goes Austin Hayes. Striber gets an out and now Tyler Stevenson coming up. Stevenson having a big series offensively. Couple of home runs, three RBI’s in the game last night. His home run tonight came with one out in the second inning, but he is a double play candidate and he takes a strike from Shriber. Stevenson now with three home runs for the season. Pitch is made and it’s way outside. One ball, one strike. Reds have runners first and second. One out. The pitch. Tempted to swing. Did not. Takes ball two. Two balls and a strike. This inning started with the single by Fredel. Now the pitch outside. So this has turned into a hitters count. Three and one. Stevenson came into the game hitting just 209. Now the 3-1 from John Shriber on the way and he walked it. And now they’re loaded for Spencer Steer. He’s 0 for two. Walked in his first plate appearance. So here in the eighth inning, we’re getting down to it. Royals are going to have to put the blocks on Cincinnati’s offense right here. Bases loaded, one out. Steer bats right-handed. The pitch is on the outside corner for a strike. So a good start for Shriber in this sequence. Spinal at third, Dela Cruz at second, Stevenson the runner at first, and the 01 pitch from Shriber. Breaking ball off the outside corner and one ball, one strike. Shriber would love for Steer to try to take a pitch away and pull it. That usually means ground ball left side of the infield. Now he comes in too far inside low and in to Spencer Steer. Two balls, one strike. Striber’s been here before. and he jammed him in a high pop foul near the Royals dugout. Vinnie is going to have to watch it drop into the fourth row of seats right behind the Royals dugout. Now the Con is even to two balls and two strikes. Beyond deck hitter is Gavin Lux Shriber rubbing the sheen off of another baseball and thinking over his next pitch to Spencer Steer. The big pitch it is 2-2 on the way. Little bit inside. Tried to nick the inside corner right at the hands but now the count is full. Three and two. The base is loaded. One out. Eighth inning. 4 to2 Cincinnati. A big big at back. Shriber. A long look at Salvi. And the 3-2. Fouled off with a good swing. Triber may have gotten away with one right there. Three balls. Two strikes to the belt. Shriber to the plate. 3-2. Ball four barely missed and that forces in a run. It is five to2 and Espanol will score. Backto back walks in this one really hurt. That’s going to do it for Shriber. Royals are changing pitchers. It is now 5 to2 Cincinnati and we’ll be right back. Is there anything better than when your plans finally make it out of the group chat? Get your girls together and get the party started. A pinch hitter is called to the bullpen powered by wholesale batteries. any battery anytime delivered anywhere at wholesale batteries.com. So, Matt Mlan, who was a starter for the Reds in the game last night, comes off the bench to hit for Gavin Lux, right-handed batter against the lefty Serpa, who buries one a breaking ball and inside and Salvador Perez is has done in a zillion times in his big league career, saved a run. One ball, no strikes. Base is loaded. One out. Eighth inning. The pitch. Fast ball strike. And it’s one and one. They have finally rendered a decision on the ball hit by Espal. They have ruled it an infield single and an error on the throw from Shriber. The pitch. A swing and a miss. Count. It’s a ball. Two strikes. Cincinnati with two runs here in inning number eight. Seri and the one-two delivery to the right-handed hitter. Copper over the pitcher’s head near second base. Knocked down by Massie to second one. Back to first safe. Massie got the ball to Bobby Wit Jr. and they get the force out at second. Massie had to slide feet first to come up with the ball. So, a nice play by Massie and a good flip and Bobby with that strong arm. He just couldn’t turn it in time. It took a while for Massie to get the ball on a backhand out of his glove. A more forceful feed to Bobby Wit Jr. means double play, but not that time. It is 6-2 Cincinnati. Runners first and third and Trevino takes strike one from Serpa. Well, I’ll tell you what though, if they pulled that one off and got the double play, that’s one that you would have seen on a loop forever. It was brilliantly done. A couple of things. There’s a chopping foul back at the plate. Non is 0 and two on Trebino. Tino’s one out of three. Number one, the ball was not hit that hard. It was not a double play ball. It was a chopper over the pitcher’s head. Massie was directly behind second when he went sliding to come up with it. Somehow got it to whip, but he had to flip out of the glove on the back hand. And that was another step and a half for the runner headed toward first base. And that’s the difference. But you’re right, Jake. That would have been a double play that you can look at over and over and over and never get tired of watching. No balls, two strikes. Runners first and third, two out the pitch.
