Here’s Bob Scandlin and Tony Gwyn Jr. It’s a cool overcast day in San Diego. Yeah, the June gloom may be rolling in, but all is sunny for the Padres’s as they look to complete the sweep today of the visiting Miami Marlin. The Padres’s have been able to take advantage of some Marlins misplays in the first two contests. Combine that with some timely hitting, solid defense, and at times maybe not pretty, but indisputably gutsy pitching performances from the starters and the pen. And the Padres’s find themselves in the midst of a three-game winning streak and a chance to complete their sixth series sweep of the season. A very pleasant good afternoon to you and thank you for joining us for Padres’s baseball alongside Tony Gwyn Jr. and our in-game producer Dave Marcus. I’m Bob Scanland filling in for Jesse Agler. And Tony, Padres’s have been able to capitalize on almost every Marlins mistake that’s been made in the series. Yeah, and that’s what has the Padres’s have had to do to win the last couple of games. They needed to capitalize. The first night they struggled offensively to kind of use some late heroics from from Manny and some great base running. Last night they spot the Marlins six runs in the first and had to kind of chip away and they took advantage of some errors in there and uh they also got back to looking like the offense we saw earlier in the season. Kyle Hart going for the Padres’s today. We saw him earlier in the season. He had five outings. Some were very good, a couple not as good as the other. They’ve had to do it in comeback fashion the first two ball games. Hopefully it doesn’t have to be that dramatic today, but it has been fun to watch. Yesterday, the Padres’s fell behind 6- nothing before forging the comeback to walk away with the 8-6 victory. We’ll see if they can get a nice outing out of Kyle Hart today. As Tony mentioned, two and two, the 6.0 earn run a making his sixth start of the season. First outing back since being recalled from TripleA El Paso. Augustine Ramirez will lead things off for the Marlins. First pitch to Ramirez, first pitch swinging, follows it at home plate and we’re underway. Ramirez hitting 239 on the season. Six home runs, 13 RBI’s. He’s been hitting in the number two spot for the first two games of the series. He gets an opportunity to hit lead off against the left-hand throwing heart. Next pitch, taken low for a ball. Kyle Sweeper change up sinker for seam fast slider. The repertoire sweeper a new pitch that he added last year while pitching in the Korean baseball league. left-hander working out of the stretch position as always. Next pitch misses down and in. Counting now two and one. And Tony, I didn’t go through it. I don’t I know you did not either, but I know you probably had teammates that went overseas, came back. I would imagine not the easiest of transitions despite having some confidence behind you. The two one misses down low. Three and one. Yeah. Just from talking to to guys, former teammates that have done it. If you can get through the cultural change that typically an American guy has to go through, there’s a lot to be gained to to be able to stick it out and and kind of learn through Ramirez. Swung on. Highf fly ball left field. A playable drifting over towards his left is Gavin Sheets. He’s underneath it and he’ll make the catch for the first out. One up, one down. Today’s game time temperature is 65Β°. It’s brought to you by Lineage Watch Company, San Diego’s very own watch brand and the official time piece of the Padres’s Radio Network. Already yours today at lineagewatchcco.com. That’s lineagewatchco.com. One down. That’ll bring up Eric Wagman. Right at inning, first baseman hitting 246, four home runs, 16 RBI’s on the season. First pitch he sees from Hart misses outside for a ball. Amen has been held under control for most of the series. One for nine with a walk and a strike out. Tony, I saw Gavin Sheets. It looked like he was sort of fighting the overcast, cloudy conditions to try to see the ball. 10 to Wag Mendes is inside two and0. Yeah, not an ideal background uh for a guy who doesn’t play a ton of outfield. Contending with the gray clouds and trying to find that baseball can be difficult. Two to Waggman. Line drive to center field. Jackson Merrill started back. Now he’s going to come in and makes the catch for the second out. Two-way. Two up, two down here for the Marlins in the top of the first. No score. And that’ll bring up Lopez. Going to wait and see what the pitch mix is going to look like today from Kyle Hart. As we mentioned, sweeper was the primary pitch that he used in his first five games up here. And that was a pitch that he did learn while pitching for the NC Dinos in Korea. First pitch to Lopez in there for a strike on the outside corner. A little back door slider. He was primarily fast slider during his initial stint in American baseball. Drafted by the Red Sox, a 19th rounder back in 2016. Lopez misses down low one and one. Got his opportunity to pitch in the big leagues with Boston. That was during the co season 2020. So really made his major league debut not in front of fans but a bunch of cardboard in the stands which had to be unusual. Bona Lopez swung on fly ball towards right center field. Is falling in but coming out hard is Tyler Wade. He’s not going to be able to get there. It’s going to fall in for a single. Two out base hit Lopez keeps the inning going for the Marlins here in the first and that’ll bring up the left fielder Kyle Sters. Yeah, off the end a sinker. Got the kind of contact that he’s looking for there, but Lopez able to kind of dump this one just in front of Tyler Wade. It’s the two out single. Keep the inning going. Left hand hitting left fielder Sters hitting .299 on the season. 10 home runs, 32 RBI. Leads the Marlins in all three of those categories. The first pitch he sees breaking ball misses outside for a ball. Ser is a San Diego boy. Grew up in Elcohone. Went to Christian High School. He’s got a lot of friends and family watching the ball game today. Long hold by Hart. Takes the runner first. Now he delivers on the 10. Just a little bit outside. Two and 0. Tony, I can’t imagine what you must have gone gone through with the past list while you’re playing here. You know, I think initially it was a lot, but you know, I think as you become comfortable, and for me, this was home. This was uh where I got to play most of my home games or all my home games. And now Hart throws over to first base, but Lopez back safely on his feet. I would tend to only get big on on giveaway days. You know, it wouldn’t Everybody didn’t want to come at that point to see the Pods play like they do now. So there’s only they only came for the free stuff. That’s sometimes that was the case. That’s when I would at least have big numbers. Things are a little different here now at Petco Park. That’s for sure. Toyota hours catches the outside corner slider at 88 miles an hour. Yeah. For me it was Los Angeles growing up in LA. So every time we’d go to Los Angeles it became a thing. Sort of managing the pass list and trying to stressful. Yeah. It was. And I actually have found that I would do okay during those three games, but the next three games afterwards, I was a mess. I was so drained. I just felt like emotionally, physically, I was just like, oh, got through that. That was great. It was fun to see everybody and I was just wiped out. Yeah. Runner on first base, two outs. Top of the first inning, no score. A two-1 count to Kyle Sters. And now a throw over to first base. Not in time. It looked like Lopez was going to maybe take off. Got a little jumpy over there and Kyle Hart at the last second decided, “Oh, I got a chance to maybe pick him off.” Looked like he redirected himself almost mid pitch and and so now Lopez has to know that he has that in his pickoff game where he can kind of read you and make his decision late. He’s burned up both of his step offs. Next pitch doesn’t get the call in the top part of the zone. The count now three and one. Tell you the one thing that’s initially jumps off the page in terms of what we’re seeing from Khart, he threw the slider the least amount his first stint up here. He’s that’s leading the way right now. Mostly sliders in this game so far. Long hold. Now the pitch swinging a miss. Another slider Tony to your point. And maybe that was some of the direction that he was given when he was sent down to Triple A. I was talking to him yesterday briefly. I don’t want to go into all the details of what he was working on for strategic reasons, but he did say that he received some instruction on maybe using the off pitches slightly differently or some different locations. So, we’ll see. 3-2 pitch. Runner goes, popped up left side on the infield. Manny Machado going back. Gavin Sheets coming in. It’s going to be Manny who makes the catch in shallow left field for the final out. No runs a hit. One runner stranded. End of an inning of play. No score between the Marlins and the Padres’s. You’re listening to Padres’s baseball on the Padres’s Radio Network. Home runs, stolen bases, and the excitement of baseball. Now, get ready for major league winning when you join. That’s why I choose the friendly pros at Petco as my home team for my pets food beting and more. Petco official pet partner for the San Diego Padre. Fernando Tatis Jr. to lead things off for the Padres’s here in the bottom of the first. No score. First pitch from Sandy Alcantra. This is inside a sinker at 96 miles an hour. Nano hitting 278 on the season. Leads the ball club with 13 home runs. Next pitch fouled at the plate. Evens it up at one and one. Home run number 13. Came in his first plate appearance yesterday. Fourth time that he’s led the ball game off with a home run this season. 15th time he’s done it in his career. Now getting a little bit of a rest off of his legs today in the designated hitter spot. Contra winds and deals a 1-1 pitch missing way inside. Change up at 89 miles an hour. And tell me that’s going to be a topic I would think today. It’s been a topic so far this season for Sandy Alcantra. The change up and how it seems to have lost some of his effectiveness this season. It was definitely one of his go-to pitches previously. The 2-1 to Fernando missing down low three and one. But that was a great equalizer for him. Yeah, especially against left-hand batters and we’ll talk about that when Lisa Rise comes up. But against right-handers as well, 3-1 throwing on fly ball the right side though. Slicing foul sinker 96 mph. Count now to Fernando. Three and two. Yeah, I mean listen, there’s no doubt he’s throwing it a little bit less. Throwing the sinker a little bit less right now. Using the four seamer a little bit more. And so he’s just seems like he’s just trying to 3-2 swung on. Well hit to left center field but playable racing overs the center fielder and the left fielder. It’s going to be the center field of Mesa Jr. makes the catch a little bit shy of the warning track. The deepest part of the ballpark here in left center field. One away gave it a ride. Able to track it down in center field with Mesa June. Tony, your experience here at day games. You know, the ball travels better here at PCO, but it’s overcast, a little bit cooler than normal. Does that sort of counteract the the daytime approach? Here’s Luis Arise. Looks at a first pitch strike. I never really found that it did. It seems like the ball still goes whether it’s overcast or not. I think Totty just got a little bit underneath that that’s that change up. Luis fly ball to left field. Playables drifting back is Sters waiting. Makes the catch for the second out. Two-way quickly here for the Padres’s. Bottom of the first inning, no score. That’ll bring up Manny Machado. The curve ball that Alantra has been working on has added to his repertoire a little bit more this year and gets a rise to fly out to left. Four seam fast ball sinker. The primary weapons, the change up that we’ve talked about a little bit, the curve ball that he just threw and the slider. Here’s the first pitch to Manny missing outside from a ball 97 miles an hour. And as we’ve talked about, it used to be more fast ball change up with some sliders, but the curve ball is something that he’s trying to incorporate now. It seems like a little bit of a strange time to try to add a new pitch. One to Manny catch the inside corner for a strike. One and one only that he’s coming back from Tommy John Serger. Yeah, he’s throwing that one. You know, his fourth best pitch out of the five that he’s throwing on one chopper third base side. Norby’s going to backhand it from deep. That was a long short hop in time just barely to get man. Nice play by Connor Norby in the far edge of the corner of the infield. Hit a two hopper over to first base. Waggman able to pick it out. And that’ll do it for the Padres’s here in the first. No runs, no hit, nobody left. Played an inning. Padres’s and Marlins tied at zero on the Padres’s radio network. The lefty’s first offering to Norby missing down and in for a ball. Give you a little bit of the background of Kyle Hart coming up in the Boston Red Sox organization getting a chance to pitch in the big leagues in 2020. 10 to Norby swinging a miss 101 and then after spending some time in the Seattle Mariners organization and the Phillies as well at Triple A started to realize he might not get another opportunity to get to the big leagues needed to do something different opportunity came up to pitch in Korea they jumped on it one-1 pitch Norby lost a little bit outside didn’t get the benefit of the call on that one two and one now to the right hand hitting third baseman for the Marlins he’s two for eight in the series with double and an RBI infield shaded slightly to pull 2-1 fly ball center field Jackson Merrill drifting over towards his left waiting waiting makes the catch for the first out and Tony I’m just again curious about these clouds very light gray I imagine it’s difficult to pick it up there’s some glare to it you wear glasses on a day like this to try to help out with the glare in any way or you just sort of have to battle to try to pick it up it is It’s not as bad as it looks. Certainly, if you don’t see it off the bat, it could be a little bit of an issue, but for the most part, you probably don’t wear your glasses. And um just try to track it as best you can. Interested to get your take on this. At least from what I’m seeing right now for Kyle Hartford, he’s got maybe a cutter that he’s throwing at about 85 86 and then he’s got a slider he’s also throwing pretty often, too. Left-hand hitter Jesus Sanchez, who was in the leadoff spot the first couple of ball games and did a really nice job. Five for nine with a home run, RBI, three runs scored. Little surprised to see him move down to the number seven spot today, but he looks the first pitch strike from Kyle Hart. Next pitch misses down low. Yeah, I think we’ve seen maybe a little bit different shape than what we saw previously with the sweeper and the slider combination. And as we talked about briefly in the first inning, he’s trying to use that slider especially a little bit differently. Use it to some different spots. One- one pitch, big swing and a miss. There’s the slower breaking ball. Look like they’re putting it down as a slider on the board. And I think that’s why it seems like he’s throwing a whole bunch of more sliders, but I think one of his is more of a cutter. And then you got a slower kind of a more natural slider looking pitch. And I think previously it was referred to as the sweeper and the slider. But now I think it’s more the slider’s the sweeper and the sl the cutter or the slide. The cutter’s the slider. The cutter is turning the slider. Exactly. A little tighter. A little bit more differentiated between those two pitches. Now ones who pitched to Sanchez recalled at the knee. Got it. First strike out of the afternoon for Kyle Hart. Tires the Marlins in order in the top of the second inning. As we head to the bottom of the second, no score between the Marlins and the Padres’s. And they might give him the base on the bobble out in the right field corner by Jesus Jesus Sanchez. But a hot shot right down the line. Tony, not a bad pitch. It’s just in the middle of the plate. It’s down. Jackson using that lower half to get down there. Hit this ball just inside the first base bag. And Jesus Sanchez had a little difficulty picking it up. That allowed Jackson to trot into third with the head first. Jackson on third, nobody out. The Marlins are going to bring the infield in with Gavin Sheets at the plate. First pitch swinging. Norby backs up on it. Third baseman goes to second for one. Not in time to be able to turn the double play. They do get the lead runner Sheets though at first for the first out. Sander now standing at first base on the fieldielder’s choice. That’ll bring up Jake Cronin. Hey, that Norby was able to get the lead runner, but be able to leg out the back half. I’ve been pretty impressed with Conor Norby over at third base, Tony. Pretty solid. Very nice job. Originally a second baseman who’s been making the transition over to third base when he got traded over to the Marlin. Here’s Jake. First pitch way outside. One and0. Marlins first traded for him. We’re not just from San Diego. We’re for San Dieans. I take time to know your story because that’s what makes your case impactful and valuable. The law local, personal, powerful. We have a 66 tie as we head to the bottom of the fifth inning and a pitching cane for Clayton McCulla and his Miami Marlins. It’ll be the right-hander Jesus Kino coming on in replace of Sandy Alcantra. Contra ended up going four innings, allowed seven hits, six runs crossed, all of them earned, walked four, did not strike out a batter. And Tony, this is definitely not the Sandy Alcantra that we saw winning a Sai Young award back in 2022. No, it’s not. And you know what? I think it probably is unfair to expect that same Sandy Alcantra considering what he’s had to deal with. Hasn’t pitched in a couple of years. And so he’s just trying to get reaclimated to this level of play. Here’s Jackson Merrill leading things off for the Padres’s. first pitch that he sees from Tanokco outside for a ball. Yeah. The question then I guess is how much of it is still coming back from the Tommy John surgery? How much of it is just getting some rust off? How much of it may be psychological with knowing that he’s on the trading block? 10 to Jackson swinging a miss? Probably a little bit of everything, I would think. So, you know, I mean, this is a human being. So, I’m sure all those things have a factor whether he wants him to or not. Jackson one for two today. Double and scored back in the second. swung on. Ground ball to the right side to the second baseman Samoha. He’s got it. Fields it over to first base and Jackson is retired for the first out here in the bottom of the fifth. Dino go on for the 18th time this season. A 6.06 earn run average. The Padres saw him in game one. He went an inning and a third of scoreless work. Did allow one hit. Ground ball to the right side right over the bag, but it’s foul. First baseman wagon fielding it, but Paul Clemens, the first base umpire, signaling foul as he was trying to take it to the first base bag. And Gavin Sheets now down in the count 0 and two. Gavin one for one today. Had an RBI single back in the second. Walked and scored in the fourth. The big fourth inning for the Padres’s. They played it five. They thought they were in control of this ball game. They were up 6-1 at that point. The feisty Marlins fought back, put up five of their own in the top of the fifth to tie it. Next pitch to Gavin. This is down and in. Slider at 85 milesPH. And so now this offense that had put up six already will be tasked with having to put up some more. One two sheets fouled off to the left side out of play. And I guess now that you have to start bringing into question Junior’s decision to run through the stop sign that’s in Leaper that put an end to the fourth inning. Who knows that and it could have continued against Salantra who was struggling. Hopefully not an issue. S next pitch to Gavin. Misses outside. Two and two. Padres’s prior to yesterday might have felt differently, but you’ve seen him put up some runs in last night’s game. D2 ground ball up the middle. Lopez is there. Scoops it up. Fires over to first in time. Sheets are tired for the second out here in the bottom of the fifth. seen them put up runs in this game and so, you know, probably feel a little bit better about this team having to scrge a couple more runs after yesterday’s outing and what we’ve seen today. Prior to that, it it it probably would feel like a much bigger task. No doubt. And it really started to turn around the last game in Atlanta. Yeah. And a two-run home run sheets to tie that ball game. Jake Croner then hit a home run. Here’s Xander makes the first pitch strike and you just got the sense, okay, things starting to go in the right direction now for this Padres’s offense. As we mentioned, they were able to forge the comeback victory in game one of this series. Yesterday, same thing. They trailed 6 nothing after the first. They came back and won eight to six. 66 here in the bottom of the fifth. Now Danner takes a strike on the outside corner. Right at 85 miles an hour. Xander one for two today into a fieldielder’s choice in the second inning. Single and scored in the fourth. O2 pitch way outside. Backhanded by Forz Forz yanked the slider trying to throw his absolute best one and count moves to one two. Tanner had a three hit game yesterday. One-two pitch to him just a little bit outside even at two and two with Jake Cronorth waiting on deck. Day off for the Padres’s tomorrow. That’ll be much needed for this Padres’s bullpen that’s gotten a lot of work lately. The Pittsburgh Pirates come into town. Two to Xander. Ground ball right back up the middle. Backhanded by Senoha. Long throw, but it’s not going to be in time. Infield single for Xander. Second hit of the ball game for the X-Man. Nice try by the second baseman, Sonoha, who had a long way to go. Backhanded it behind the second base bag. Did the offbalance throw, but it was nowhere close. Tell you what, I I think Bo deserved two hits on that one. The first pitch strike was about two baseballs below the zone. The second one was questionable and he just found a way to keep this inning alive for Jake Cronorth who had a two RBI double as last at bat. I like it. Tony, you’re going to put together a new scoring system. Throw over to first base. Sanders back safely. You could just see the frustration in his in his eyes as he was going through that bat. Never said a word, but just found a way to to put the ball in play and he’s rewarded. Winners find answers. He found one. First pitch of Jake taken for a strike. Jake walked in the second inning and had a two-run double in the fourth. That was a five run fourth for the Padres. Pitch popped up right side on the infield. The first baseman Wagman is waiting for it. Still waiting right next to the first base bag and he’ll make the catch for the final out. No runs to hit, one runner stranded. They’ve played five. Padres’s and Marlins tied at six. They’re losing the Padres’s baseball on the Padres. Take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager said the following. I really don’t know what to say. David Morgan on for another inning of work for the Padres’s and Norby still trying to get some feeling in that left toe. Those don’t feel good. Takes a timeout to kind of regroup. Understandably, Tortez saying, “Whoop, give me a second here.” And they reassess. Now he’s ready to dig back into the right hand batter’s box. Giants only scored five runs in the entire series. And the Detroit Tigers now best record in baseball. I don’t think anybody anticipated that. First, Julius Diaz taking a strike. In Houston, the Astros beat the A’s 5 to3. A’s have now lost 13 of their last 14, dropping from second place to last place in the AL West. Tough run. Big swing and a miss. Way out in front of that split at 84 miles an hour. 0 and2. Boy, when that pitch is on, Tony, it’s nasty. It it it’s really nasty. It was interesting. So Noah kind of swung at the first one and kind of gave what the hitters do. Oh, good pitch. And then Matt Suie comes back with another one and he waves over the top of that one. Didn’t quite have the same look back after that one. The first one’s like, “Okay, I see what you got. Good pitch. Go ahead, throw it again.” He did and he missed it again. 0 and2 was able to hold up on that one. Not bad location though. Not a bad idea. Look, everybody knows you’re going to throw a third one as long as you make it better than the first two, right? And Sonoma made the adjustment. He holds up one and two. Really stayed kept the hands inside nice and tight on that fast ball in. Nice adjustment. Shortened up, doubles the left. Here’s Victor Mesa Jr. left-hand hitting center fielder. 0 for two today with a couple of flyyous. Shows bunt gets it down third base side. Manny Machado has it. Fields it over to first base in time, but the sacrifice is successful. So Noah now standing on third base with one down here in the seventh and a 66 dime. Well, just like that leadoff double, a sack bunt. Marlins 90 ft away from taking this lead. And a hot batter coming to the plate and Augustine Ramirez wasn’t hot in the first two games necessarily, but two hits today, including a solo home run. Here comes the throw. It is going to be in time. Augustine Ramirez is getting a little bit aggressive. Gavin Sheets recovering after the bobble. Makes a nice throw to Manny McDra at third base for the second half. Great job by Sheets. I know the initial bobble is what Dave Ramire is the idea that he might have a chance to beat there. But what I love what Sheets did was he didn’t panic. He foubled that ball. He kept his his calm about him. Picked it up. A two hop throw. A great pick up and tag by Manny. They get the second out at third. Wagman still standing at first base. Two down. The batter is Otto Lopez. First pitch to Lopez. Swing on fouled at the plate. Yeah, as he mentioned, nice job by Gavin Sheets not to panic. Also, really nice play by Manny and he had actually played behind the runner. The runner is sliding. The ball is short hopping. Manny just held his ground, was able to pick it and then apply the tag. Having a goal glover over it. Two down, a run is in. Marlins have a 76 lead. Jason Adams trying to keep it there. Owen to Lopez. Fly ball to right field. Racing over Tyler Wade. This one is going to land foul. It looked like it was going to be trouble there for a sec. It did. Jackson Merrell did a nice job cutting the space down. That prevented Wagaman from going first to third. But yeah, three straight hits for the Marlins. They continue the threat to try to add to the lead. Urban Diablo will now make his way to the mound. Get Jason Adam back on track. I’m not used to seeing this kind of contact off Jason Adams. came into the ball game with a 1.35 home earned run average, but not been scored upon in his last seven trips to the mound and still has not been scored upon here in the seventh inning. Although it’s been a challenge for him, did a first pitch filed pitch when he entered the ball game that allowed the go-ahead run to score and has since allowed backto backto back singles. And out for a good throw by Gavin Sheets and a nice tag by Manny Machado. A run would be in. As it stands, runners on first and second with two outs. The batter is the left-hand hitting left fielder Kyle Stard. And it comes set. Checks the runner at second. First pitch to Stard. Ground ball to the right side over the mound. Jakewood grabs it. Fouled at the plate. Gavin had a little hot sauce on that swing. a little lean back into the right-handed batters box as he had to gather himself to get going towards first base. Oh, but he knew he got it. He was eyeballing it the whole way. One hits him right in the head. Connor Norby down as he just took a change up in the helmet. The training crew is coming out for the Marlins right away. Clayton Makoa coming out right away. Jason Adams is coming in to try to see how he’s doing, but he is down on the ground and not moving right now. Leas Diaz is taking a look and the medical team for the Padres’s is going to go out here as well. Very scary moment here at Petco Park. Thank goodness it wasn’t a fast, but an 87 mph change up nonetheless hitting Connor Norby right in the helmet. Knocked his helmet off. Norby immediately went down to the ground and he’s still down. Tony, that is scary. I mean, the things he has going for him is he was starting to duck out of the way and his helmet was starting to come off his head as that ball connected with his head. So, you know, I know it’s a change up, but anytime you get hit in the head, remember a change up even at this level was still 80 plus 83 84 plus miles per hour. And the fact that he had kind of softened that blow by kind of already getting out of the way and the helmet starting to come off, I think is uh really a blessing. No, you’re absolutely right, Tony. It looked like it wasn’t as flush it as it could have been. And he is standing up now getting a nice round of applause from the crowd here at Petco Park. He’s trying to stay in this game. He’s working on it. He’s trying to talk the trainers into it. It looks like they’re giving him some of the test, checking his eyes right now, doing the concussion protocol. And he’s he finished he finished test one and immediately was trying to grab his helmet. He’s still trying to grab it as the trainer is still having a tough discussion with him right now. He’s going to first base. Yeah, he’s winning that little debate with the training team. And Clayton Makulla is walking down the first baseline with him as is the training staff still. He’s put his helmet on and it looks like they still might be trying to negotiate with him, Tony. Yeah, still talking to him. Probably making sure he’s still checking all those boxes and they may very well let him stay in, but they’re still going to check on him after this inning for sure because sometimes these symptoms don’t hit you right away. Well, I imagine there’s some adrenaline going on right away and for sure. Well, they’re going to leave now as Clayton Mako and the training staff is going to leave the field as we mentioned. Conor Norby now standing at first base and he’s going to resume. So, a very scary moment here, but hopefully everything okay. Getting back to the baseball of the moment, the Marlins now have a runner on first base with nobody out. And Nick Forez coming to the plate. That hander Wandu Peralta getting loose in the Padre pin. 8-7 Padres’s lead here in the top of the eighth. First pitch to Forz misses way outside. Ball one. Jason Adams has had his struggle since coming into the ball game. Issued a wild pitch that allowed the go-ahead run to score. Allowed three consecutive singles. Was able to get out of the seventh inning, but hits the first batter here in the eighth. Pitch to Fortz catches the inside corner for a strike. This is a guy usually with elite command with all of his pitches. You can see pretty early on in this outing that kind of feeling for that command right now. One-1 popped up coming right at us Tony, but it’s going to be a little bit short. Count now one and two. infield shaded for a right hand pull hitter Jake Cronor towards the second base bag. One-two pitch. Ground ball to the left side. Manny charges, scoops it, can’t handle it. He was thinking about going to second, but everyone’s going to be safe. And Manny picks the ball up, snatches it with anger, and now he throws it to Jason Adam. That’s a play that you would think in most circumstances once it’s in the hands of Manny Machado, he underhand flips it to second base for at least the lead runner. But the Padres’s get none. And now Mike Schul is going to have to come out and go to his bullpen. He may have gotten ahead of himself. I think he once he fielded it, he was thinking about turning it to second base. Yep. And as he went to do it, lost control of it. They’ll get an error and the Marlins will have first and second after this pitching change. Jason Adam leaves the ball game. We’ll take a timeout when we come back. We’ll let you know who’s coming in from the Padres’s pen on the Padres’s Radio Network. Hey, it’s Gravy. Padres’s were not challenged. It was close, but just a little too slow developing for the Padres’s to get two. Wani Peralta now has runners on first and third with one out. Javier Senoha at the plate. The first pitch to Senoa. Little blooper towards right field. Could be trouble. Taylor Wade coming in, but he’s going to be there to make the catch. And because it was so shallow, the runner at third, Norby couldn’t even think about trying to score. That is a big second out for the Padres’s. Padres’s will certainly take the early out. Like a change up down and away, way off the plate. Norby puts it in play. Not deep enough. Peralta now one out away from getting out of this inning. All series long, we’ve seen this Marlins offense very aggressive. A lot of first pitch swinging, but the Padre pitchers have done a nice job of countering it, making quality pitches early in the count. That was another example of it. First and third, two outs. Here’s Mesa Jr. swinging a miss. More early attack. This time from Mesa Jr. He falls behind 01. Mesa Jr. 0 for two today and had a sacrifice bunt back in the seventh inning. 8-7 Padres’s lead. Top of the eighth. First and third, two outs. Peralta gets a sign. He likes a left-hander come set. Oh, Mesa in the dirt. Blocked by Diaz. After going through a little bit of a rough stretch earlier in the month, has really found himself again. Five consecutive outings now where he’s throwing the ball well. One to Mesa missing inside. Two and one. Victor Mesa Jr. defector from Cuba with his brother a few years ago. Both of them signing with the Marlins. Mesa Jr. getting to the big league. Got his first big league hit yesterday. Andre infield in the pole position. Xander behind second base. Next pitch misses way outside. Three and one. This is the matchup wants right here. Yep. Lefty on left. Got a I would say a much more dangerous Ramirez who’s got three hits on today, including a homer. The 3-1 pitch way outside ball four. He’s loaded the bases. And to your point, Tony, bringing up the hottest hitter for the Marlins today. And Augustine Ramirez, the designated hitter, as Tony mentioned, three hits, a solo home run back in the third, an RBI single in the fifth, he singled in the seventh. And now Ruben Ya will go out and have a chat with Wii Peralta. Not how Wy wanted that at bat to go there. Walks him on five pitches and they’ll have a tough matchup. and Augustine Ramirez, who’s three for four, two RBI’s, a homer, and the bases will be loaded. Stein Ramirez has looked good really all series. I know only had the one hit coming into today’s action, but has hit the ball well. Have a chance right here to Will the Marlins Elite. He was a number 55 prospect coming into the season. Always had the good hit tool and he’s showed it so far in this season as Tony explained. Base is loaded, two outs. 8-7 Padres’s lead. The first fish to Ramirez. Swung on line drive. Base hit in center field. One run is going to score. Here comes the throw. The second run is going to score. And all of a sudden, the Marlins have taken the lead 9 to8. Well, you mentioned it, Tony. That was not the matchup that the Padres’s wanted. Ramirez wasting no time. We’ve seen that all series long, swinging early in the two-run single. Scores Norvy and Forez to give the Marlins the lead. Walk Burns. Wandi Peralta. And the Marlins get a one-run lead as Eric Wagaman comes to the plate. Wagman two for four today. A couple of singles in his last two plate appearances. Looks to the first pitch ball. No action in the Padres’s bullpen. They’ve been used a lot and Wii Caralt is going to have to work out of this out of his own it looks like. Next pitch missing outside. The normally stout Padres’s bullpen has given way today. 200 swing a line drive over the head of Manny Machado into the corner. Mesa Jr. is going to score. Gavin Sheets trying to get a handle on it. They’re going to send another runner. He’s heading home. Here comes the throw from Xander. He is out at the plate. But the Marlins do get another run as the inning comes to an end. They now have a 10 to8 lead over the Padres’s as we head to the bottom of the eighth inning. You’re listening to the Padres’s Radio Network. Tony Gwyn Jr. here. Jake Croner will lead things off for the Padres’s. Ronnie Enrique still in the ball game for the Marlins. The first pitch to Jake misses outside. Jake went for two today with a two-run double back in the fourth inning. That’s when the Padres’s thought they had this game in control. They were winning six to one at that point. But a lot has happened since then. One to Jake on the outside corner to knees for a strike. They even up at one and one. Marlins came back with five runs of their own in the top of the fifth inning to tie the ball game up. They then took the lead in the seventh. The Padres’s came back to score two in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead back and then the Marlins responded with three of their own in the eighth and that’s where we stand. 108 fish. Tyler Wade now stepping into the left-hand batters box. Tyler 0 for two today with a walk. Swings first pitch. Pop up left side heading towards foul territory. May reach the stands and it will be a souvenir in the seat set. Third baseman Connor Norby was given case. Tony mentioned it earlier. Had it been a ball game like this last week, you’d be wondering if the Padres’s have the offense to overcome this 108 deficit. But the way that they’ve been swinging the bat over the last four or five games much better and the way they’ve been swinging it today, anything can happen. The 01 to Tyler missing upstairs one. They’ve proven in this game alone that they can still figure out a way. They’ve done it twice in this series. three times in this series. One to Tyler on the outside corner for a strike. Talked about Enriquez in the year he’s having thus far. He is making some pitches here in his eighth inning. The one pitch he did not make was a mistake to Gavin Sheets with a two-run home run in the seventh. That gave the Padres’s their 97 lead at that point, excuse me, 8-7 lead at that point. As noted, Marlins came back with three of their own in the top of the eighth. Three take the lead. One, two Mitch down low to Tyler Wade. Count now even at two and two. Left hand hitting right field. The pitch. This is down low. Counts forward. Second time this inning that Enriquez has gone full count to a Padres’s batter. He’s able to come up for big change up to put away Jake. Let’s see what he goes to to tie away. Wouldn’t be surprised if he goes to him. He went to 22 change and the rule of thumb for a hitter is if he’s willing to do a 22, he’s most likely willing to do a 3-2. The pitch swung on a miss. Strike three. Nasty slider back foot again. Well executed. 3-2. Had to be presented right. Ball starts inner third. Ends off the plate off of that back foot. Gets the punching. I don’t think he was even trying to throw it there. A full night of baseball starts at 5. MLB Tonight’s National Pregame Show weekdays at 5 Eastern on MLB Network for the Marlins in a lot of cases to kind of keep things going and gave up a couple homers today on pitches that were up. I thought for the most part he threw the ball pretty well, but those kind of little dink and dunk hits ended up coming back to hurt him in the end. You know, it looked like it was going to be another heroic day for Gavin Sheets. He came up with the two-run home run in the seventh. Uh but unfortunately the Padre bullpen just not able to get it done today, Tony. And granted, they’ve been used a lot. And Jason Adam came into the game and he could just tell he just didn’t have his normal sharp stuff and issued a wild pitch to bring across the go-ahead run and then he ends up taking the loss today. Wandi Peralta also not able to get the job done today. Just just a tough day for the bullpen. But again, a lot’s been asked. Yeah, lot’s been asked and uh I think the off day is coming at a good time that these guys kind of have a full day of rest, no throwing and um listen, I think they’ll bounce back as they have all season long and and be the bullpin. We saw today just wasn’t their day. Yeah. And in fairness also the Padres’s had an opportunity to get out of that eighth inning. Ground ball to Manny Machado. He’s not able to handle it. So the three runs that scored at the end, none of them earned. Um kind of an interesting series in terms of displays by both teams end up being determinant in the in the outcomes of the games. Well, the Padres’s only had this game where they didn’t play the type of defense and it ended up coming back to to Hanum and it cost them a sweep and on a day in which almost everybody in the division loses, you had a chance to pick up a game. Uh, unfortunately, they’re not able to do that. And, you know, they’ll get the off day, regroup, come back ready for the Pirates. I think it’ll be an important off day, especially for this Padres’s bullpen. Again, a lot’s been asked. They’ve done a great job all season long. Not able to get it done today. And the Padres’s fall to the Miami Marlins by a score of 10-8. 10 runs, 13 hits, one error for the Marlins. Eight runs, nine hits, one error for the Padres’s. Jason Adams suffers a loss. He drops to 5-1. Ronnie Enriquez ends up being the winning pitcher today. Improves to three- one. The save goes to the San Diego native Kelvin Bosch. We’ll have a full game recap, go through the radio highlights. But to sum it up quickly, Padres’s had a six to1 lead in this game after a fiveun bottom half of the fourth inning. And then immediately they give it up in the top of the fifth inning. Kyle Hart and David Morgan allowing five runs in the top of the fifth as the Marlins tie the game at six. Miami then takes a lead seven to six in the top of the seventh inning. Gavin Sheets delivers a huge two-run home run to go ahead put the Padres’s ahead 8 to7 in the bottom half of the seventh inning. And then the Marlins against Jason Adam and Wii Peralta score three in the top of the eighth inning as Miami goes on to win it 10 to8. So, the Padres’s had a five-run lead. They had a one-run lead late in the game heading to the eighth inning. And the Marlins answered every time the Padres’s had a punch in this game. That included an early one- nothing lead in the bottom half of the second. Marlins, in fact, you look at it, they scored in the next half inning. Every time the Padres’s scored in this game, Padres’s got one in the second. Marlins got one in the third. Padres’s got five in the fourth inning. Marlins got five in the top of the fifth. Padres’s got two in the bottom of the seventh inning to take an 8-7 lead. Marlins then scored three in the eighth inning to take a 10-8 lead. So, this was a tough one for this reason. You’re looking to sweep a team in Miami that came in at 21 and 32. You have a 6-1 lead. I know Kyle Hart is on the mound up from TripleA making a start. not, you know, the the best of the starting pitching that the Padres’s have, but you felt like after they had that fiveun fourth inning, like they were going to be able to kind of cruise in this game to a series sweep and a win against the Marlins team that again came in with a record of 21 and 32, 11 games below 500. And credit to the Marlins, every time the Padres scored, they had a punch back. Obviously, not a great day for the Padres’s pitching staff. Kyle Hart uh giving up a bunch of base runners in that top of the fifth inning as the Marlins tied it. David Morgan gave up a big three-run home run to Lopez to tie the game at six. The big hits, all the great and all the swagger. Relive the day’s biggest plays all in one lightning fast hour. Oh my goodness. Show. You better believe it. Quick pitch.
