🔴LIVE🔴 Houston Astros vs Oakland Athletics | MLB 2025 Full Game Highlights | May 28 | EN VIVO

Hello baseball fans and welcome to an ALS matchup on the show. It’s the Athletics taking on the Houston Astros. First pitch coming at you right after the break. just about ready to go. And on the hill here today, Colton Gordon. Chris, it’s a little more common these days, but still he’s a strikeout per inning type of guy. Well, I hear you about the strikeouts. A lot more guys striking out today. But when you consider having the ability to get that strike out, particularly when you need it, a man on third, less than two outs, situations where, yeah, maybe you’re not a real high strikeout guy, but just knowing you have the swing and miss stuff in a big spot, I think it’s real critical. And he’s got it. had a breaking ball. Misses outside. That’s too low. Three and O. All I would expect in this three-0 count. You’re taking all the way. See if he’ll walk you. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Now, this was a story we were paying attention to before the game. We’ve seen him give up walks in the past and it’s an issue once again early on. Brent Rooker up next for the A’s. That’s inside and it’s one and0. Rooker goes 6 feet 3 in 225 lbs and he’s usually in the outfield. Today he’s the DH [Music] and there’s a rocket into the outfield. Lead runner touches second, headed for third. coming home now. He dives and he gets the tag on him and there’s one away. A lot of real estate to cover on that play defensively. A long throw to the cut off man and then a lot of ground to make up as well on the relay, but an excellent job of execution and getting that out at the dish as he tried to make it home all the way from first base. [Applause] So the go-ahehead run in scoring position. Sodestrom digs in now. Now a check on him at second. Back safely. [Applause] Ground ball up the middle. Oh, great stop. Throw to first. Nicely done for the owl. [Applause] And time now to check out the A’s lineup. Sing. This righty heavy lineup must be licking their chops with a lefty on the mound. Well, to me, Boog, it shows the manager trying to set these players up to have a big game facing an opposite handed pitcher. You only get a fraction of a second longer to see the ball and decide to swing. But that can be the difference between a line drive and a swinging strike. Miguel Anduhar in the box now. No balls in a strike. Well, he had a pretty good look at that pitch and not sure exactly what tied him up there. Couldn’t pull the trigger and perhaps the best pitch he’ll see. Meyers makes the catch and that is that the A’s strand one. Now here come the Astros. No score. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show back here at Dyken Park. Starting on the mound in this one, Gunnar Hogland. What do you look for here? Well, he’s been a real quality starter for his club. And coming into this one, what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year. It seems that they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone. So, we’ll see how right-handers do against him in this one. Jeremy Pñena leading things off and takes a strike. [Music] And a foul ball. [Music] The shorts stop takes the ball. Nice grab the throw and very nicely done for the out. Now we check out the Astros lineup. And Chris, this offense is facing a defense that is well known for kicking the ball around a bit. How aware are you offensively of a bad defensive team? Well, you’re not like completely aware because you’re really focusing on your approach. But I think when you know about a team and how they can be sloppy and as it plays out in a ball game, you’re more intent on saying with two strikes, I got to make sure that I put the ball in play because even if I don’t get a knock, there’s a chance they commit an error and it leads to us scoring more runs. [Music] batting third. One gone runner at first. Jose Altuve up to hit here. And that’s downed [Applause] away and the one. Yeah, that’s fouled off. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up the pitch. There goes the runner. And that is out of play. Just off the outside part of the plate. Really good take, especially with two strikes. That one misses. Full countdown now. Good miss with that change up away. He needs a ball on the ground for a double play. Minimize the potential threat right here on the hitter side. Nice job of laying off that [Music] pitch. Fouled off again. And it remains three and two. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow left field. Lays out. Buddy can’t squeeze it. They fired in quickly. So it’s first and second with only one away. A late jump. And I think that was the difference on the play. Boo. It’s not always easy seeing the ball off the bat. Something to improve. Two on, one out. And now it’s going to be Christian Walker. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. Swang and a line drive. Ripped right center field. And this one could be extra bases around third. He’ll score. Throw a cut off to second. Not going to get him. He’s in there. Well done. Drives in the run. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. Vic Keratini at the plate. Swing and a tapper that rolls foul. It’s great to get on the board in the first frame of the ball game, but here’s an opportunity for them to really open things up with a couple of runners on. Let’s see if they can cash in this situation. He’s trying to get you to pop something up or jam you. That’s a really good take knowing you got an opportunity to drive in a run here. The 1-1 is fouled off. Altuve at third. Walker at second with one away. That’s outside and the count is two and two. Line drive. That’s a base hit as a run. Scores. The throw in. It’s off the mark and he scores. Well, he wasn’t afraid to hit with two strikes. I think he choked up a little bit, maybe spread out, but he got the job done right [Applause] there. One down and next to hit for Houston, Jake Meyers. Seems like he’s making contact with everything lately. Hitting better than 350 this month. Still only one out here in the inning. [Applause] On the corner for a [Applause] strike and that one’s a little bit low. And it’s two and one. in for a strike. Went with the sweeper on the ground to third and that’s a fair [Applause] ball. They get it in quickly. So first and second now one out. batting at the plate is the Astros catcher Diaz. Yay. Swing and a liner foul off to the [Music] [Music] right. And that drops in for a strike. Very well executed change up right there. If he can command the fast ball consistently, that’s going to be an important pitch in terms of him turning this outing around. That one inside now one and [Applause] two. Two on, one out. Foul ball still a one and two count. Laboring here about to throw his 30th pitch of the inning. Fouls it off. Still one and two. [Applause] swing and a base hit and they stop him at third. So base is loaded with one away. We don’t see this a whole lot anymore where hitters with two strikes are willing to shorten up, tighten up and try to hit the ball back up the middle other way. He was trying to hit that hole, I believe. Very good at b with two strikes. So bases loaded with one away. Here’s the rookie right fielder Cam Smith down and away for ball one. Could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this. Ground ball left side. Could be two. Over to Aras. One throw to first but he beat it. I promise you, they’re guys that get a little bit faster when they can smell an RBI. That was a possible inning ending double play. Great hustle and he gets rewarded with the RBI because of it. Here’s Mauricio Dubon. line drive. Base hit it right for you. The run scores from third and it’s an RBI single. It’s 5 nothing. Well, thirdly, he was ready to hit right there. He really shot that one down the right field line and somehow found a way to keep it from slicing. Foul. One thing that was great about the approach, his head was down all the way through the pitch. And that’s how you do it. And here comes Mark Kat as he’s ready to make a change and go to the bullpen. Gunnar Hogland will depart and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. Now pitching for the So a new pitcher on the mound for the A’s, Anthony Maldonado. I think it’s got to be a little tough coming in out of the pin when your guys are trailing so big on the scoreboard. Just doesn’t have the same intensity to it. But he’s got to find a way because these batters count the same for his stats obviously regardless of the score. Jeremy Pñena now at the plate to third on Duhar whips it to first and they’re happy to just get off the field after that frame. All in all, 10 come to the plate. They bat around and five score. Onto the second inning now from Dyken Park. It’s the Astros five and the A’s nothing. Top of the second. Here’s Luis. Second base Luis Urias. Gordon back to work right through there for a strike. I’m sure he likes the 5-0 lead and the rudd support, but he’s sat around a lot since warming up in the pin, and you’d hate to see a guy not have his rhythm to go out there and have a great start. That’s off the mark. One and one. That’s a strike. and lines out to third. Batt Logan Davidson. Here’s Logan Davidson. And a bunt towards third and that goes foul. Swings through that one for strike two. Eric Summersgill, our plate umpire. One thing to watch out for, Boog, is what side of the plate Summer Somersgill might be favoring. He usually sets up at an angle. Pitchers sometimes will try to figure that out early so they can attack that spot and get as many strike calls as possible. Singy, what kind of strike zone is most frustrating for hitters? I’d say off the plate, away and down and why those are the toughest locations to hit the baseball. One out, base is empty. Fights that one away. Still one and two. As the game has moved along, we see more and more information supplied by teams about the umpires. I’ve been in clubous where they have pictures of all four umpires, nicknames, hometowns, and as well hobbies listed just so you can kind of small talk the umpire a little bit. That’s great. Squeezes it. Two down. Seven right fielder Lawrence Butler. Two outs, space is empty. Lawrence Butler up next for the A’s. Slider right there. 01’s the count. That one back up the middle and it gets through and that extends the inning. This lefty matchup thing’s not going so well. Batting eight, catcher Willie McCyver. And here’s the catcher, Willie Macyver. Step off throw to first. Butler dives back in safely. And the slider just misses. And there’s the strike. I got one ball, one strike in there at the knees. Butler off of first with two away. And that’s way high. And it’s two and two. [Music] Missed inside with the curb. What a stop. takes it himself and he got him. Nicely done at first for the out. Back here in Houston, we head to the bottom of the second now. The number two hitter, Isach Paradus. pitch is in the dirt and that is ball one. One ball, one strike. Let’s go. That one catches the corner. Just off the outside corner. Now two and two. I don’t know how you take that one after the called strike on the corner. Just a little bit off the edge and a slider misses down and away. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with three hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. [Music] Swing and a highf fly ball out towards right center field. Drops into the glove and there’s one down. Now batting left fielder. Here’s the former MVP, Jose Altu, one for one with a single and a run scored so far. And that’s off the inside edge. Ball one pulls that one foul. outside with a breaking ball. Little dribbler up along third and foul ball. [Music] Swing and a ball lifted left field. Soderstrom gets under it. They got it for out number two. Up next for the Astros. First base. Two down. Base is empty. So here’s the Astros cleanup hitter Christian Walker. He doubled home a run in his first AB. And that’s off the outside edge. One and0 and downstairs. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound in this situation ahead 20. He’s put himself in a really good spot. Inside just missed. in for a strike. Now three and one. Two out. Space is empty and it’s fouled away and a payoff pitch. Got him looking and he did not like the call. Astros go down one, two, three, but they hold a five nothing lead. And welcome back to the ballpark. Top half of the third inning. And here’s the rookie center fielder, Denzel Clark, looking for his first big league hit right here. Smash down the left field line. That’s a fair ball and it’s getting into the corner and he starts his afternoon off right with a double. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. Nice line drive to the pull side. Met it out front but just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the outfield. Could be a chance here for them to start clawing back into this ball game. So the lineup flips over at the play. Jacob Wilson walked to open the ball game and had a foul ball. Man at second out towards left center. Meyers settles under it and makes the catch. One away. Now batting the designated hitter, Brent Rooker. Next is the designated hitter, Brent Rooker. Doubled in his first AB. Taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. First offering and it just misses. One out and a runner at second. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. Runner takes off. Pitch in for a strike. Throw to third and he’s out. [Applause] [Music] So, a foul ball makes it one and two. Looked like he got a little excited on that fast ball. Got to think to yourself, want to stay up the middle that way. If you’re a little bit early, you hit it out of the ballpark. You’re a little late. Opposite field not. That’s off the inside corner and the count is filled up. And they’ll do it [Music] again. Two down. Nobody on. Fly ball pretty well struck right field. Smith going back and out of here. A shot to the opposite field. It’s 51. The count was full, but he was ready to swing it. Boo. I wasn’t sure he hit that one as hard as he needed to to get it out of here, but it had just enough behind it for the homer. What an attempt at the wall, though. He really gave a terrific effort to try and bring that one back. Sod in the box for the second time. One ball, no strikes. [Applause] Right through there for a [Music] [Applause] [Music] strike to the right side and that is the inning. The A’s get one on this homer. It’s now a 51 ball game. Back after this on the show. Bottom of the inning and now the DH Victor Keratini hitter Victor Keratini. That’s in there. Strike one. Well, these Astros really impressing me with the quality of their bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see him go to work. He jumped all over the starter and knocked him out of the game early. He just was never able to settle in and the damage was done by the time he got the hook outside low now. Two balls in a strike. I mean, when you’re chasing the opposing starter in the first inning or two, that’s just such a tone setter for the game and it puts the other team back on their heels and it instills a lot of confidence in your lineup from top to bottom. Throws across the diamond. Leadoff man retired here in the third. Good slider inside right there. Batter fighting to get there. Just rolled over. Got the ground ball. So, next up for Houston, Jake Meyers. Singled and scored his first time. Highf fly ball out towards left center. Soderstrom pulls it down and he makes the catch. Two down. Now batting catcher. Yer Diaz up next for the Astros. This is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively. Fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate. Good game caller, good at framing, but it’s that big arm that really stands out. Right side, Davidson. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Nothing doing there for Houston. They’re up 5-1. And we’re back. Start of the fourth. Now the third baseman, Miguel Anduharu. That one fouled off. When you got a catcher like this guy with a big arm like that behind the plate, it really shuts down the running game. Check swing, called strike. Well, I’ll say this. This is a former position player and base stealer. When you come into a game and you’ve got a guy like this behind the dish with a big arm, you really have to change your approach. Can’t try to steal cuz you’ll get thrown out. Maybe get a little bigger lead, be aggressive on the secondary, but this type of guy shuts the running game down. And that one is lifted in the air and it drops in. But a good job to keep it in front. I’d say a mistake pitch in an 02 count. Too good of a pitch to hit right there. You have to expand the zone. Keep that leadoff man off first base. Here’s the second baseman, Luis Urias. And first offering is fouled off. Urias in his sixth season, 27 years old, and he’s a native of Mexico. There’s the strike of the knees. That’s a great take right there. Even though it’s a strike with the situation, runner on first base, you want to keep the ball off the ground and you swing at that pitch, most likely you roll into a double play. Breaking ball and that got him. He had two strikes on him. Eddie hit him. First and second, no outs. Next is switch hitting first baseman Logan Davidson 0 for one with a fly out to center. Foul ball there. Here’s an opportunity. If you’re going to get back in this game, you have to take advantage of this situation. This feels like their chance. The one is outside and it’s a ball and a strike. Just missed with that back door breaking ball. If he gets a swing and miss or called strike, 02 count instead. It’s 1-1. Look for him to go back to that pitch later in this at bat on the ground. There’s one on the first double play. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leagers. They make tough plays look simple. Lawrence Butler up next for the A’s. [Applause] He swings and fouls one off. Two outs and a runner, a third. Top half of inning number four. Late swing. Fouled to the left. Twins and misses. It’s a strikeout. Slider got him for strike three. The A’s strand one. They’re down here five to one. Welcome back. And they turn to a new arm as we kick off the bottom of the fourth. JP Sears should be a good first match up for him here. He’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season. They’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him up. Now one out to right. Butler moving under it. He’s there. He’s got it. And there’s one down. Really nice job to get your first out of the ball game. Second base. Mauricio Dubong. The next to hit. RBI single. His last time up. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Sears fills up the zone, forces contact. So, not a huge strikeout guy, but he’s going to make the hitters beat him. Doesn’t issue a lot of walks. So, the pressure is really on the batter to make something happen inside. Almost got him. Base is empty, one away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Next offering is fouled back. throw. Next one is off the play. It’s two and two. And although you like the fact that guy throws strikes, guy gets contact and not always great contact. The fact that when you have runners on, if that ball’s in play, there’s still a good chance that a run gets pushed across whether it’s earned or not. Boogie just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count up at two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. So, the Houston lineup turns over. digging in Jeremy Pñena. He’s grounded out a couple of times. Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. Command in the zone is such a crucial part of it, right? You know, it’s not just throwing strikes, but it’s throwing quality strikes and having quality misses as well. What’s a quality miss? Missing just off the plate rather than over the plate. on the ground to first. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. One, two, three go the Astros. They lead this one though 5-1. New inning getting started. And now here’s the A’s catcher, Willie McCyver. Gordon back to work now. One close rule to ball. Ball one. You know, these A’s doing a good job of simply getting the bat on the ball in this game and the numbers back that up. One thing that really stands out to me is how they’ve only struck out one time. That’s good discipline right there. And on top of it, they’re producing more than a hit per inning. All those numbers mean this offense is really making the defense work by just putting the ball into play. Anything can happen at that point. And now the center fielder, Denzel Clark doubled his first time. He was late there. Strike one. Oh, and one slashed foul down the right side. That’ll hook off into the seats. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two now. One missed. Two strikes. Pitch misses there. Two balls, two strikes to count. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. Ground ball right side. It squirts through. So, the one out hit turns the lineup over. Now here’s the leadoff hitter for the A’s, Jacob Wilson. He’s 0 for one. [Music] Knee high. That’s in for a strike and that’s in there at the knees quickly into an 02 count. Both pitches were down in the zone. I think you set your sights a little bit higher because you’ll have a tendency to chase if you look down in that area. He goes down looking, tunnneled that pitch. Thought it was going to be a slider break. He did off the plate, but it hung the corner. And at that point, when he recognized it, it was just too late. Now the A’s designated hitter, Brent Rooker. He’s already homerred in this game. Step off, throw to first. Clark back on a dive. Next offering popped in the air right field. Nabs it and that is that back here at Dyken Park. John Shami with my buddy Chris Singleton and set to get us started. Bottom five, Issach Paradis. [Music] And a pop off right side foul territory has room and he makes the catch. Now batting left fielder Jose Al. Now here is Jose Altuve. He is singled and he has flyed to left. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Action in the pen down there. Michelle Otanz, a right-hander with big strikeout stuff, is getting it fired up. Spence warming up as well. Fought off foul. One down, base is empty and a foul ball. He stays alive. Swing and a miss. Got him to go up the ladder for the K. Oh, that high force seam fast ball has become such a great pitch for pitchers to finish hitters off. They’re trying to stay back with two strikes, make sure that they can handle something off speed and just with good spin rate, good rotation through the zone, elevated a little bit, get a lot of swings and misses. And that’s a really nice job right there. Walker stands in now and watches strike one. That’s out. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. One ball, two strikes. And there’s a ball. Ball two. Two down, nobody on. Last half of inning number five. And it remains two and two. Two outs up the middle. In plenty of time to first and the Astros put down in order. back here in Houston. All right, we go to the top half of inning number six. Now the left fielder Tyler Sodstrom and first offering is fouled off. Yeah, that’s too high. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. The one two foul ball left side. He’ll see another. And now the count is even. in the air. Left field down the line and it stays fair. Takes the turn. He’s digging for second. Not in time. That’s a leadoff double. He went up there and got it with two strikes. I’m not going to leave this in the umpire’s hands. I’m going to be aggressive. It was in a location where he could get those arms extended that he loves to do. So, nice job right there coming back in that at bat. manager out of the dugout now and he’ll make a move to dip into the Astros bullpen. Colton Gordon gives way and that’s an excellent job from the reliever in the starting role today. Gave him some length back with a new arm after this. Now pitching Hunter Brown on a pitch out of the pen here. Well, good luck against this guy. and he’s been extremely tough to hit this year. His numbers are excellent. [Applause] Runner in scoring position, no outs. And Duhar getting ready to hit. One for two. And there’s a foul ball. No outs. Runner on second. One. Activity in the bullpen. From Valdez, the lefthander up and throwing. Smoked on the ground to second on to first. Now one gone in the top of the six. Now batting second baseman Luis Uria. Now it’s the second baseman Luis Urias. And that one hit 97 on the gun. [Music] Ripped, but a curls. Foul. Swings and misses at the breaking ball in the dirt. Diaz gathers, throws the first in time for the second out. Good job to clean it up after the drop third strike. Well, obviously that was nowhere near the strike zone by the time it got to the plate. And people at home watching are thinking, what’s he swinging at? But I’ll tell you, some of the break guys snap off these days. It’s just devastating. It can be so tough to recognize where a pitch like that’s going to end up. Logan Davidson up next for the A’s and a high-fly ball in the air left field. Altuve and makes the grab. And that is that back here in Houston. Now we go bottom six. Now it’s the DH Victor Keratini. [Applause] First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Well, these Astros showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. The numbers say their chase rate or swings at pitches outside the zone is under 25%. And I think that’s a big reason why they’re scoring runs. out to short. Wilson fires across the diamond and that’s one out as they get the leadoff hitter in the six. By not chasing out of the zone, they’re getting good pitches to hit. When you can do that, you have a much better chance to square up the baseball and do damage like they have so far. Jake Meyers up next for the Astros. Clips the corner. That’s strike one. 01’s the count. Trying to bunt his way on and it goes just fouled. The 02 fast ball is outside. I don’t think he was trying to miss by that much in an 02 count. Just tried to overthrow that pitch. and misses. It’s a strike out. Toughest pitch to hit. Fast ball and then the outer black. Man, sometimes you just got to tip your cap for the two out. Space is empty. And now Diazer Diaz in there at the knees. Strike one. and ball one on the ground right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. So, no runs, no hits, no errors and no one left. Seventh inning coming up, it’s the Astros five and the A’s won. We go to the top of the seventh. Now it’s the right fielder, Lawrence Butler. Lawrence Butler Brown, a righty that throws with power. 26 years old and he was a fifth round pick back in 2019. A dive. He’s got it from his backside. And that’s a great play for the Y. Cadillac reflexes on that one. Makes the dive. Has to get up. Clean exchange to throw a strike across the diamond. And what a tremendous play. Willie Macyver digs in now. Just missed. One down, base is empty. Swang and a popup. Pñena calls it in. Two away. Up next for the A’s, center fielder Denzel Clark. Two down, base is empty. Here’s the center fielder Denzel Clark. A first pitch misses. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. [Music] And another ball. [Music] That one’s in there. And now three balls and a strike. [Music] popped up to the left into foul ground and puts the squeeze on that one. And that’s the third out and the A’s are gone in order. They’re down 5-1. [Music] Now pitching for the So, a new pitcher on the mound for the A’s, Michelle Oz. He pitched yesterday and we’ll see him once again. Cam Smith now at the plate. Astros right fielder number 11. And that one a little bit high. Ball one. No strikes. Closed but called a ball. And the count is two and0. And that one missing low. So definitely a little wild right out of the gate. Well, it could be a little tough coming from the bullpin mound to this mound, but you’ve got to find a way to get ahead in the count quickly. He hasn’t. We’ll see how this at bat turns out. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. Pretty much gifted in first base with a quick free pass. And stepping in for the Astros, Mauricio Dubon. The A’s bullpen has some movement. Justin Sterner getting loose out there. That one lifted to left. Sodstrom in position. He’s got it. And there’s one down. Now batting shortstop Jeremy Pñena. Jeremy Pñena the next to hit. 0 for three with three ground outs. [Music] and a swing and a miss. Wow, good luck catching up to that one. That missed by a lot. It’s a ball in two strikes. Smith leads off first with one away. on the ground. Could be two. Feeds to second out there. Double play. And that’ll do it for the inning. Three up, three down for him there. We look ahead to inning number eight. It’s the Astros five and the A’s won. Now pitching. Welcome back. get a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Brian Abrau. And we all know about his slider. It’s just filthy, man. And one of the better ones in the game, I’d say. Spin rate’s very high and it just breaks a ton. So, back to the top of the order. Now, here’s the leadoff hitter for the A’s, Jacob Wilson. Chris, baseball today, so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers, but this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. And that drops in for a strike. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. That one misses and that’s ball one. Singi, one of the things that’s interesting is that guys really don’t worry about swing and miss from an offensive standpoint anymore. So when you see somebody who contacts the ball like this, do you think of that as plus value? Absolutely. If he’s doing damage now, if he’s rolling over and and grounding out, then it’s a different story. But yeah, if he can put the ball in the gaps or over the fence, 100%. Swings and misses and we’re filled up. Yeah. And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end. Now batting designated hitter Brent man at first, nobody out. Brent Rooker getting ready to hit. He’s already homerred here in this one. And a swing and a miss. There’s that slider. One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins, the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter, the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter. In the air, right field makes the catch and there’s one gone. Now batting left fielder Tyler Soderstrom. Here’s the left fielder Tyler Soderstrom. One for three. Yeah. And I figured you would get caut into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. Checks his swing appeal to third and he went around. That’s ruled the swing. [Music] Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. Man at first. One away. That one not close. And the count is one and two. swings through it and that’s a strike out. Oh, really went aggressive in with that slider. Good two strike pitch right there. At worst case scenario, it’s weak contact in play. exactly where he and the catcher wanted her. [Applause] [Music] Duh in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike and a swing and a miss. The Astros leading by four and we’re in the top of the eighth. Swing and a ground ball out to short over to first and that’ll do it. Ready for the bottom of the eighth. Here’s the third baseman, Isak Paredes. Isach Paradis. Otanz back to work. And that’s in there for a strike. Little slider that finds Lamar. 02 count. Both pitches on the inside part of the plate. Hitter is thinking, I don’t want to get beat here. This is a good time for something off speed away. swing and a miss. Struck him out. One gone to the bottom of the eighth. Seems that he was committed to swinging at this pitch regardless of where it was before the pitch was even released. He’s in an 02 count and you’re looking to battle at that point trying to protect the zone. So you do become a little more swing happy, but on a fast ball that doesn’t even come close, makes you think there wasn’t much of a two- strike adjustment being made there. Swing hard in case you hit it. He didn’t hit it. That misses. And now it’s even one and one. Ball two. [Applause] swing at a highf fly ball to left and there’s two down. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. Hard on the ground to first. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Now pitching and Valdez into the game. And compared to a lot of other relievers, strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year. So, the defense should be active. Here’s the second base, Luis Urias. Second base, Luis Urias. And that’s in the dirt. [Music] [Applause] [Music] And that’s downed away. Two and0. [Applause] Next offering is downstairs. That one misses. So a lead off walk. It’s tough after falling behind a hitter. two balls and no strikes. But now at least he gets a fresh start against a new batter. But he needs to get back into the strike zone and start pitching with conviction. [Applause] Davidson in the box here lets that one go for a ball. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Ryan Gust preparing to come on if needed. Susa, a left-hander, also [Music] [Applause] throwing. The 1-1 is fouled off. This one in the dirt. On to first. Nobody out. [Applause] Not close with that one. And it’s three and two. [Applause] swinging a ground ball. Fair ball and he can’t come up with it. Making some noise here trying to give themselves a chance. Turned on it nicely. Definitely a little out in front of the pitch, but he didn’t hook around it too much and was able to keep it fair down the line. First and second, no outs. And now the right fielder, Lawrence Butler. on the ground to the left. Fair ball. Urenas doesn’t stop. Heads for home. One run across the relay. Head first slide. Safe at the plate. And it’s now a two-run game. Making some noise here. Two RBI’s on that swing and they’re right back in it. Everyone’s trying to elevate the ball in today’s game, but if you can hit a ball that hard on the ground, it’s going to find some holes. Really important at bat coming up now. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Robert Valdez won’t go any further and he’s responsible for the runner on second. So, the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. Now, so the closer someone from the bullpen, Josh her. I think closer has to be one of the toughest jobs in baseball and we see a pretty high turnover rate because of it. Every outing seems to be high pressure. This one included. We’ll see if he can wrap up the win and get himself a save. The flip to the pitcher covering now one gone in the ninth. That’s why you hug the lines on the corners late in the ball game like this. Positioned perfectly. Stepping in Denzel Clark. Denzel Clark. This is the classic manufacturing a run situation. A runner at third, less than two outs, and a golden opportunity to bring him home. And that one just misses. A ball and no strikes. Don’t be surprised to ball on the ground to the corners that they come home with the baseball instead of going to first base. Swing and a miss. 98 on the gun. I think ultimately you want to tie him up. get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. Hard ground ball for a base knock. In to score is the runner from third and it’s an RBI single. Back within one. It’s 54. Comes through with the RBI. Wasn’t able to elevate that one, but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield. There’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like that. And now let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. So digging in, Jacob Wilson and the first pitch misses for ball one. [Music] Crowd locked in right now. One-run game here in the ninth. The shorts stop takes the ball. Homeplayed umpire is trying to tighten things up a little bit. tapped at the plate, but it’s a foul ball. One-run game here in the top of the ninth. Swing and a miss and the count’s even at two with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Runner on the move in there for strike three. Safe at second. And that was not close. And the tying run is now in scoring position. The Athletics down to their last out. And next is the designated hitter Brent Rooker trying to deliver as the hero. He gets the intentional walk here. And now a force at any base with two gone. Now batt leftielder Tyler Sodro. First and second, two outs. Now the left fielder Tyler Soderstrom down to their final out but an opportunity to deliver the tying and maybe even winning run. First pitch and he just misses. Well comfortable or not, these are the situations closers they seem to live for. I mean you get into some hot water, a jam, tough spot, whatever you want to call it, but this is where they earn their keep. So the tying run at second and another ball. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. And a foul ball makes the count. Two and one. [Applause] Oh, that’s out. At this point in the game, you cannot issue free passes. He’s going to have to challenge this hitter. Hitter’s got to be ready to swing it. Miguel Anduhar in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Founding ball here. Rolls [Applause] foul. Hater is just one strike away. Spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another. [Applause] swinging a foul ball at the plate. They’ll do it again [Applause] and they’re all loaded up. Pretty much the last thing you want from your bullpen arms are free passes, especially in spots like this. make the team earn their way on. Here’s Miguel and Duhar known for his late inning heroics. [Applause] In for a strike, good slider. Tough situation right here. So important as a pitcher to get ahead in the count as he did right there. Two outs. Just off the inside edge. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side. He pulls it down. Bing and the Astros hold on to winning a nailbiter. Stranding the winning run on base. Close one here today. And your final 54 for Chris Singleton and our entire crew. I’m John Shami saying so long. What the heat?
