MLB Network breakdown Keith & Malloy lead AL-leading Detroit Tigers sweep of Giants with 4-3 victory

and two for three with two RBI today. A big two RBI single to put your team ahead in the fifth inning, which was a really big inning for the team, scoring all four of the runs. But we saw you talking to hitting coach Michael Baddard just before that at bat pitching change happened. What did he tell you and how did you take advantage of that at bat? So, I mean, pretty much like we just kind of game plan what we see on the sheet, how we feel the game is going about, what we think he thinks is going good for him, and and just kind of game planning backwards. So, um, that’s kind of what we talk about before every at bat, and I was able to just kind of go in there and just execute. So, it felt good. Landon RP was really good for them to start. His curveball was nasty all game long until you guys got him out in that fifth inning, but what was it that made him so hard to get to? I do think he hit the nail on the head with that curveball. Um he’s got a good pitch there and then with the sinker paired with it. Uh he was able to kind of work it in, work it out, uh he was doing some pretty good things with the ball. So he threw really well, but you know, fortunately enough, we came out on top today. You know, these games have been intense as of late and coming down to the wire. How impressive and exciting is it for you guys to kind of sit in the dugout and watch the bullpen do its thing? It’s so cool to see because there’s so much trust and and faith uh from the next guy who comes in the game. Uh so it’s just our bullpen picks up the guy and they do such a really good job at at what they do. They fill the zone up. Uh they get outs however they can. I mean that inning by Tommy was, you know, was just incredible. You know, coming in with runners in scoring position and and doing what he does and keeping the ball in the infield and and keeping the score as what it was. So, um, you know, that’s what our bullpin’s been doing. That’s who the guys are down there and and they do a really good job. AJ Hinch told us today that it’s this team’s focus individually and as a whole that allow you guys to put yourselves in positions to win series, to sweep series. How have you been able to do that so consistently as a group to this point? I think it’s the men in the group. Uh, when you have really focused men, you’re going to have a really focused group. So, uh, that’s kudos to every individual who’s in the locker room. Um, but I it does take the individual himself to to be as focused as they need to be in order to succeed. And our group does a really good job of doing that, whether it be, you know, handing the next ball off to the next arm in the bullpen or the next guy who’s up at the plate. So, uh, I think just the focus of the group has just been phenomenal. Awesome. Thank you, Jan. Appreciate it. Thank you, Danielle. Justin Henry Mallaloy with a big two RBI single that pushes the Tigers to not only a win today, but a series sweep over the Giants. And that’s big time. You know, it guarantees a a winning home stand. First three games against Cleveland. You know, took a little luster off the shine and then TKO dominates Cleveland on Sunday and now one, two, three against the San Francisco Giants. Uh that’s four straight for the Tigers. Now 37 and 20 on the season. Let’s go. It’s what life’s all about. Uh Tigers playing great baseball. Let’s bring in Andy Dirks because he called this one alongside Jason Benetti upstairs. Hey, and in listening to what Jay Hen just said, I love that he says it’s the men in the group. If you have really focused men, you’ve got a really focused group, right? That’s right. Takes focus at the individual level to have it at the group level. Johnny, that’s why I love you. You’re so focused every day. You increase my focus dramatically. Is this true? Yeah, of course. Okay, let’s go with it. Uh let’s also go with our Expinity Highspot. uh highspeed highlights and talk about the fifth inning because that’s where Jay Hen and the Tigers came through. Hey, all the runs come in the fifth and we saw it manufacturing there in the early part of the inning. Finally get RP out of the ball game uh and then Tigers able to do just enough to get a series win. Yeah, to get runs off RP and Rodriguez was very impressive. This is a good pitching team. We knew the runs were going to be at a premium this whole series. That’s why defense was important, the way the Tigers pitched the ball. But to be able to scratch some runs out today when we know their bullpin’s full of life. It starts out a little air here by Matt Chapman. That’s just because he knows the guy that hit that ball can run like the wind. That’s it. Carpenter got a knock over in right field. And this is where we go that first to third action. There’s nobody out. Rogers pushes the limits. I love first to third, nobody out. It’s my favorite spot to start a rally for good reason. Glabber Torres, another just professional at bat. He’s the ultimate professional in this lineup. Such a steady piece. Draws the walk after some really tough pitches that he took. That sets it up for Cole Keith to ding one down the right field line. And here we go. We’re thinking this is awesome. The problem is they got this guy Rodriguez out in the bullpen pin that can strike everybody out. It was looking a little gloom and doom there for a second. There was a couple strikeouts and Jay Hinn had a game plan going in. Don’t swing at the slider down in the way. Get the heater. And when he got that heater, he rips it to left Johnny. And the Tigers start running. Troy Cora was happy. He can wave his arm around. The Tigers take the lead. And that lead is one that they didn’t give up for the rest of the ball game. That’s big time, man. You see RP looking on uh only one earned run charged to him, but four runs scored in that inning. And that was big time. I mean, sometimes that window’s open just for just for a bit. And uh big clutch two out hit there from Jay Hen uh to plate the go-ahead runs. Let me talk about the bullpen, brother, because while we talked about him yesterday, we’re going to continue talking about him. I know Jackson Joe pitched into the fifth. Uh would have liked to have gone a little bit deeper, but it’s a tough Giants lineup, but then you got Hannify Holton, Brebia, and then Kanley uh getting six huge outs today. this bullpen, man, on a day where, as you say, runs are going to be at a premium, when those guys when you can turn it over to those guys and hold it right there, this team’s going to win a lot of ball games. Yeah, if the bullpen’s locked down, man, that helps out a lot. The Tigers bullpen this year has really not blown any leads of any significance this whole season. And when you guys got guys that are that reliable, you know, when you got a one-run lead, you’re on to something. Hannify comes in, does a great job with his bowling ball sinker. That thing’s nasty. Holton had a really good outing. This is a guy that we’ve been kind of keeping an eye on. Had a few struggles off and on so far to start the year compared to what he was to the end of last year, but he’s starting to find that groove, starting to find that pace. Breie came in, got a big out. Then when he came back out in the next inning, he had a little bit of struggles. Ended up. There was two guys on. There was a runner at second base. There was a runner at third base. And they called on Tommy Canley in that dancing change up. Gets a little fly ball. Carrie throws it in and gets a big strike out. Jake Rogers has to throw this one down the first though. That was a little dicey. Tigers got it done there and then he gets a little weak ground ball over to first base. But that bullpen today and that man right there stepped up in a big way to help this Tigers team win. If you like seeing change ups, watch these. Look at that grip. Johnny, is that how you grip the change? Yeah. Well, yeah. Yes, that is exactly how you did it. That was exactly. He even stuck a fast ball in for good measure. That was cool. That was cool. And I thought the thing you brought up about it is it’s location, location, location. Just like the real estate industry. That’s what makes it so effective for Tommy Canley, you know, cuz you know, some people that are just casual fans are like, “Well, how can he get everybody out with the change up?” You’re like, “Well, he’s not exactly putting in the same spot every time.” That’s right. And he kind of he can he can manipulate that pitch. He can make it drop. He can make it cut. He can make it fade. So really, it’s kind of like three pitches in one. It’s like the threein- one little arsenal that he’s got out of that same grip, which is that weird little Vulcan looking change up thing. It It is incredible what he does. And when you keep him honest, you mix in a fast ball, it’s like, where’d that come from? Yeah, he got I got it in the toolbox. I love Tommy. Let me ask you one quick question before where I cut you cut you loose here because Tigers will get an off day tomorrow, which is big time. But then they go to Kansas City and Chicago. You got two indivision opponents. Seven more games here coming up on the road. Again, you can’t go out and win a division necessarily in May uh and even in June, but if you go out and continue to play this brand of baseball and get yourself enough of a cushion, it’s a big road trip, a meaningful road trip for this team as they try to create a little space. Yeah, I think also, you know, just play consistent baseball throughout a season. You’re going to have a lot of ups and downs. The main thing is when they go on those little downward streaks, how long do they stay down? And this team has proven when they go down and everybody around, oh well, here it goes back to Right back up. Four in a row. Here we come. And going to play division opponents is always huge. You want to put your mark on the division. We We want to win in the division and we want to win a lot in the division. Show Kansas City what you’re all about. That’s a tough ball club. It is a tough ball club. And you’re a Kansas native. That’s right. But they actually play in Missouri, Johnny, in case you didn’t know from your time in uh Kansas City. It was actually on the Missouri side. I understand. But they have fans that are from the Kansas, too. All right. Good stuff. Good uh geography lesson as well. All right, Andy Dirks, you’re the best. Appreciate the time. Where are we going next? AJ Hinch manager postgame press conference brought to you by Blue Moon. What are your take on that one? Just the fact that so much else but one inning. For sure. Well, a lot of pitching from a lot of people. I mean, obviously the big moment at the end was incredible. I mean, that is a uh back against the wall, you know, try to just go one hitter at a time and when you get the first hitter, you try to get the second hitter. Um once you get the second hitter, you’re not out of it because Yas is coming up. Um and he and he continued to make pitches. And then coming off of that adrenaline, you’re going to go face, you know, the meat of their order. So, uh in the ninth, he did an incredible job, but so did Tyler Holton. um you know and and obviously Jackson um you know had to grind quite a bit today. So um good team win. We did a lot of things right. We did a lot of things that we can review and do better but never never ever be um dissatisfied with a with a series sweep at home. For Tommy Kley, what about his stuff and his demeanor allows him to thrive in a situation? Yeah, I mean he’s I mean he’s he’s very unique, you know, behind the scenes. I mean he’s very unique on the field, you know, today he’s pumping 95 96 with the fast ball, which we hadn’t seen a lot of fast balls and neither had they. So he gets the big strikeout. the change up is it’s a you know speaking of unicorns I mean it’s it is a a pitch where everyone in baseball knows um how he pitches and yet he finds a way to get soft contact misses bats um and and continues to pound the zone. So um fun player because he he can he can be utilized at any point of the game and he doesn’t he doesn’t uh he doesn’t change his plan. When you see him come sprinting out of the bullpen like he does, is there something extra invigorating about giving the ball to him in a spot like that? When I don’t want anybody in the spot at that point. I’m at that point, I’m pretty pissed that we’re in that situation. Um, but I do love putting him in the game. You know, I I don’t think that it, you know, it’s just him. You know, you you could tell, you know, the other seven relievers to to do what Tommy does and it just wouldn’t look the same or feel the same. Like, he’s unique. He’s one of one and and um you know we’re we’re enjoying having him on our team. AJ, sweeping the series the way you did against a really solid team without any huge offensive explosion any game. The way the pitching staff went, how much extra satisfactions did you Yeah. I mean it just, you know, we find different ways to win which is really important. You know, I think this team has learned that we don’t know when we show up who it’s going to be. Today Jay Hen, uh tough matchup. He’s playing to try to get Riley, you know, to work on the bench. Riley a day at DH. He gets in there, it’s not the right matchup for him necessarily, but he’s going to fight his way. He has a tough defensive play. Um doesn’t hold hang his head and comes back with a with a huge base hit with two outs. And so that’s our team. You know, we we don’t care who the hero is. We don’t care what inning it’s going to be. you know, we’ve thought shown it over and over and over again that um we’re going to try to beat you with our 26 guys and and sometimes it works. I know we we talked a couple weeks here weeks ago about Jay Hen in the clutch and how he seems to rise to the moment, but in a situation like this where he hasn’t been playing a ton, but still stays ready. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I mean he’s he knows the zone and and I think one of the one of the benefits of him being in this role. Um if he can just stay patient and that doesn’t mean not swing at the first pitch. It’s just stay in the moment and get a good pitch to hit and he did. He walks up there that Rodriguez is nasty. Like that’s a really good reliever with plus stuff all across the board. and and you know the the the human instinct is to try to do too much, you know, and um especially given the lack of opportunities, but he has a a you know, an uncanny ability to just take a deep breath and stay in the zone and get a good pitch to hit. He didn’t miss it. Um and it paid huge dividends today. What’s the takeaway for Jackson today? And you think you mentioned grinding. Yeah. Yeah. you know, I it felt like he was getting ahead and then long at bats and these long at bats are just eating at him, you know, uh you know, from a endurance standpoint, it’s eating at him from um just having to show hitters different pitches to get his outs. You know, he came up with some really big pitches. He didn’t didn’t really cave. He didn’t he didn’t, you know, try to go away from the strike zone that much, but the you know, the volume of pitches are just piling up on him in a short period of time, and that’s given him trouble. Um not that he can’t get his outs, but it’s that the hitters see every pitch he has almost every at bat. And so as he becomes more efficient and he’s going to have a ton of games where he’s more efficient, um he’s going to he’s going to dominate. Had his work cut out for him today. Obviously caught today’s starter, Jackson Job, and then four relievers. Also had a run scored and showed his fleet of footedness, if we can say that, going first to third on the Carrie Carpenter single there in the fifth inning, which helped spark that rally for the Tigers. He’s standing by inside the Tigers clubhouse. This interview brought to you by Cure Auto Insurance. AJ was talking about Jackson’s outing and just how he had to grind through a little bit. Found himself in some long at bats even after getting ahead. How were you guys able to get through what he did and and what did he struggle with today? Yeah, he grinded, you know, um he got, you know, behind in some counts and then, you know, had some walks there, but, you know, he grinded through it, you know, and um you know, you know, he just did the best he could and went out there and look, he was at the end of the day, he gave up, you know, gave up a couple runs and a big homer there, but you know, um you know, gave us a chance to win with three runs. So, um yeah, I mean, he did good and you know, again, I think he wish he would do better and, you know, I think we all wish we could do a little bit better, but um you know, at the end of the day, he gave us a chance to win. Tommy came in and and was incredible, but uh the the fast ball was more in use today. Do you saw it when it was coming out so good that you thought or was that in the plan from the get-go? No, it was a surprise attack. Yeah, it was a surprise attack. Um I said, “Here you go.” No. Um look, um you know, we we used a change up, but you know, again, he’s he’s got a heater. I don’t I don’t know. It felt hard. Um I don’t know how hard it was, but um you know when you again when you’re throwing a lot of change ups and you have, you know, some good hitters that can you know sit on it and um wait for it and then all of a sudden you throw you know 94 95 whatever it was um it seems really hard. So yeah, I think it was just um you know one of those things we were on the same page and he rared back and threw it and again it’s hard to cover both of those pitches. So u yeah surprise attack. How impressive has it been to seen a guy like him kind of adapt to the bullpen and and the way that he gets you guys out of situations like he did in the eighth and it feels like he just does it very calm. Yeah, I mean he’s a pros pro. Um he’ll throw every day and you know love it, you know. I mean he’s just he’s a baseball guy and again that’s a huge you know it’s a huge thing to come in like that with second and third and and nobody out and get those three outs. I mean, that’s a huge moment in the game and and to keep, you know, even one run scoring but no run scoring is is really impressive and and he did a great job there of of of doing that one out at a time. You know, like AJ said when he came to the mound, it’s like, hey, look, let’s just get one out at a time and, you know, take it, you know, pitch by pitch and he did it and got out in the eighth and then closed it out in the ninth. So, I think that’s, you know, kind of everything you want in a guy out there in the pin and, you know, just to be ready every day and to throw, you know, quality pitches like that is awesome. Going back to Jackson, you’ve seen TK and Casey and Ree kind of find their way at this level. How about for a guy like Jackson? Like, what’s it going to be for him to turn that page eventually and and get to the point where he’s where those guys are? I mean, look, he’s he’s he’s he’s holding his own. Look, I don’t think he’s doing uh what his potential is, you know, up to his potential, but look, um he’s he’s a really young kid, you know, and he’s got a lot of talent and um I think he’s going to be just fine. You know, I think everybody kind of goes through a little growing up phase in this game. you know, it’s very hard and this level is very hard and um you know, I think he’s he’s going through it right now and to be able to go through it and and you know, and still kind of tread water is is it speaks a lot to kind of stuff he has. So, um I think he’s going to be just fine and um I think he’s going to be a special player as as he gets older. And Jake, how would you take to this new role since coming back? Maybe not playing as much as you were last year, but still contributing to winning baseball whenever you do play. Yeah, I mean, we got another great catcher. I mean, I I’m just um you know, yeah, it’s it’s tough. You know, I’m used to playing a lot and but that’s just not my role anymore. Um you know, Dingler’s doing really well and again, I’m going to get my reps. That’s kind of I told Chris earlier and you know, I talked to AJ, I’m going to get my reps. I’m going to play a little bit, but again, that player’s playing really well. Um and and he’s catching really well and he’s hitting really well. So, again, I I know my role and I’m going to be here for him withever he needs and whenever they want me to play, I’m going to be ready um and try to, you know, try to fit my role as best as I can for this team to win. Um, you know, it’s again I I want to play every day, but you know, it’s when you got a player playing that well, it’s it’s tough to play every day. So, um, but yeah, you know, he’s doing great and again, as long as as long as we’re winning, I love it. So, yeah, just Don’t get [Music] Time of death. Now we’ll clock. Put a dent in them. [Music] [Music] Yeah, teamwork. No rest. [Music] [Music] They shall not ignore us so easily. Sorry. [Music] [Music] [Music] without shaded. [Music] Well, that was satisfying. It’s all rest. Heat. 1. These Tigers can blitzkrieg runs in a hurry. I want the Dodgers in the World Series and a sweep to put the exclamation point on a great season. Go Tigers

  2. I heard a National league speaker say that the Tigers can’t beat a good National league team. They have several good National league teams and they could handle them. Only team we had a hard time with was the Dodgers and they are a extremely young team. They will get better every day.
