The Los Angeles Chargers LOOK ELECTRIC At OTAs…
All right, boys. Welcome back to another video. Thunder Alley here. Today, we’re going to be going over otaas. So, the first noteworthy thing is going to be Rashan Slater. There were only three players on the roster of 91 that were not on the field, which was Tuesday, so two days ago. I’m a little bit late, but it was Slater, it was Bud Depri, and it was Trey Pipkins the third. Now, the reason Slater was not on the field is because he and the Chargers are in the midst of a contract extension or at least negotiations. Slater, the Chargers starting left tackle, is entering the final year of his deal, the fifth year option. The Chargers picked up a year ago and is due 19.04 million. Slater, we know he’s one of the best tackles in football. He instantly slotted in for the Chargers when he was drafted and became an AllPro. And of course, now the Chargers also got across from him, Joe Alt. So, they’ve got two very, very good tackles, like generational type of prospects. In terms of Slater, he is going to get paid. He’s not out there. He won’t be until he gets paid. So, the Chargers are going to have to get that done. This is a team that has a good of money. If I’m being honest, they didn’t have the craziest free agency. Last season, they were kind of handicapped with finances, but this year, they had the money. They just chose not to use a lot of it. So, they certainly should be able to get this done. This is the first time Slater has missed an opening OTAA session in his career. There are also voluntary workouts, so no need to sound an alarm just yet. The next real deadline is the start of mini camp, and Slater could face fines if he skips that. According to the collective bargaining agreement, teams can find players up to 15,515 for the first missed day of mini camp, $31,030 for the second missday, and 46,540 for the third miss. In total, a player who misses all three days of mini camp could have to pay a little more than 93,000. So overall, that’s going to be the most important thing. The Chargers can’t really do anything until they get that figured out. It’s very similar to the Bengals a year ago when they had to pay Jamar Chase is it’s just it just holds up the entire franchise. So, the Chargers need to get that done ASAP. I mean, this is one of the best players of football. The next one is the players who worked off to the side and did not participate in full team drills included cornerback Cam Hart, safety Elijah Molden, linebacker Deion Henley, cornerback Dean Leonard, and receiver Luke Grim. The Chargers rotated heavily at corner in Tuesday’s practice. Some of that is related to how much safety Derwin James Jr. moves around. James played safety. Nickel and dime in Tuesday’s practice. The same positions he played last year. Jackson still, St. Juice, and Taylor all played on the outside in Tuesday’s practice. Still also played inside at nickel when James was not playing there. When it comes time for training camp, I think we will see a top three of Jackson still on heart. When James is at safety, all three of those players can be on the field at the same time. Jackson a heart on the outside with still in the slot. When James moves to nickel, only two of those three can be on the field and there should be some competition to sort out those spots. St. Juice, Taylor Bridges, and even Leonard should get opportunities to challenge for playing time. The secondary, there’s certainly a spot for one of these younger guys to go get it. So, that’s something to follow in camp. The Chargers again have an OTAA tomorrow and then they’ve got three next week, the third through the 5th. It’s going to be a lot of fun. still had the best chance of the day to start making his case. In the opening period of 11 on 111, the starting offense faced the second team defense while the starting defense faced the second team offense. On the first play of practice for the starting defense, backup quarterback Taylor Hineki threw behind his intended receiver. The pass went right to Still, who could not make the catch for the interception. The ball tipped into the air and linebacker Denzel Perryman came down with the pick. “Too good to be true,” Still joked after practice. It was a slow tempo practice, meaning defensive backs were not allowed to challenge the ball unless they had a clear break in path. As still put it, today was really about showing where to be, lining up, really just making sure everybody stays up. I mean, that makes a lot of sense. It’s still very early. We’re talking about the opening week of OTAAS. Eventually, we’re going to see some aggressive plays on the balls and guys going at it. Chargers receivers versus Chargers corners should be one of the more interesting battles in all of training camp, let alone just the Chargers. It It’s going to be intense, man. I can’t wait. And the Chargers defense against the second string offense. I mean, that couldn’t have been very pretty to watch. Makes nobody surprised that Hineki threw a pick. I mean, Hineki is a solid backup quarterback, but again, the Chargers defense is one of the more elite units in football. I mean, they completely just shut down the Texans in the playoffs. I don’t know how they lost the game. I mean, it just turnovers and drops and things like that, but the DBs nonetheless got their hands on some footballs in the first period of 11 on 111. Quarterback Justin Herbert threw to receiver Jaylen Raer on an overout to the left side. dropped the pass and rookie safety Jaylen Jones picked it off. Hey, right on Q. Justin Herbert throws the ball. It’s off of a receivers’s hands and it’s intercepted. Very similar to how the wild card went for the Chargers months ago. Jackson had a pass break up on a go ball off play action from Hinei to Brendan Rice. Bridges also intercepted Hinei later in practice. Hineki and receiver Mike Williams were not on the same page. Hineki expected Williams to break off the route, but Williams continued up field. I mean, that makes sense. These guys haven’t played together. But how about Mike Williams on the second team? So Williams is not competing. That’s cuz uh Quinton Johnston. I guess that makes sense, right? Be interesting to see that battle. Can Mike Williams actually be a starting receiver on the outside and Bridges took advantage of the miscommunication on the next play. Taylor broke up a pass to Williams from Hinei on an out route, which means he was just smothering him if he’s going to break that up. He’s all over him. These guys just have to gain a little bit of continuity, camaraderie. Rookie receiver Trey Harris showed up at a couple of different points in the practice. In the first period, he ran a smooth out route to the right side, created separation, and hauled in a completion from Herbert. On the next snap, Harris won on a comeback route to the left side, beating Still Hine. Harris for the completion. Okay, so finally we’re starting to see some completion, some good balls, and some catches. Late in the practice during a third down period, Harris caught a pass from Hinei on a go route down the right side. The throw was into traffic and this would have been a fun play to watch in a higher tempo practice. Rookie safety RJ Mickens made a good read from the deep half and was in position to play the ball. Harris has some ability in contested catch situations. We’ll have to wait until training camp to see that come fully to life. Receiver Laki had the splash play of the day down the left sideline during the third down period. Herbert launched a go ball in a third and five. Maconi tipped the ball up to himself with one hand and made the catch. still was in coverage. Again, in a low tempo practice, a lot of these plays, the majority of them aren’t going to be made, but it’s still fun to see. I’m sure that was awesome if it’s on video. I’ll have to go and see if I can find it. Fielding a question about whether he should have made a play on the ball in a higher time of practice, still smiled and said, “No, okay, there we go.” Yeah. On top of Slater and Pipkins not being on the field, Zion Johnson also participated sparingly. He worked at left guard during the team’s offensive drill against air, but he did not have any snaps in the 11 on 111 period. The initial starting offensive line set up as such. Left tackle Jamar Solier, left guard Branson Taylor, center Bradley Boseman, right guard Mai Beckton, right tackle Joe Alt, Carrison Barnhart also got first team snaps at left guard Johnson did work on some snapping to Herbert during individual drills as experiment at center continues. I mean, he’s been doing that for weeks now, if like a month at this point. Personally, I do think that Zion is going to end up starting. The only thing is that if you look at the center position, Andre James makes a great case, too. Right now, ESPN listed a Zion and then Boseman at left guard, but what about just putting Andre James at center and then Zion at left guard, but Z I mean, I think Zion’s going to end up playing center. It doesn’t make any sense to put him at left guard. And are you going to start Boseman? You gonna start James? That’s going to be the thing. So, and James, I don’t even know if he can play left guard. I mean, I guess like centers can play the guard position, like they’re not going to go to tackle, but yeah, you guys are going to have to let me know your thoughts down below on that. Hart suffered a shoulder injury in the Chargers playoff loss to the Houston Texans last season. He said he suffered a torn labroom and had surgery in January.

Slater's elite. Both he and the Chargers know he's next, so I doubt the top line is a point of contention. It's most likely, details just need to be worked out.
Johnston over Williams is so crazy to me😔 I’d trade Johnston away the first chance i got
