Houston and Atlanta were mention as top options to get teams. Don’t know if NHL would expand Past 34 teams. Will the Yotes ever come back?

  1. Yes. Players like this market so the league will keep it near the top of its list. Phoenix should be a four sport town and there will eventually be people who can make it happen.

  2. The key is LOCATION. In the past they just haven’t quite got it right. Ideally, downtown Phoenix would be the optimal location but any further west is going to be difficult

  3. Need an owner/group with deep pockets and a community that is okay with the redevelopment of land and all that comes with it. Honestly, the only hope IMO is a duel use arena with Suns, and it’s somewhere in Phoenix.

I think the NHL can do 36 teams. It should be Houston. Atlanta, Quebec City, and Phoenix. The NHL being the first league to expand past 32 would be interesting to see if the NFL or NBA follows.

However the next city is for sure going to be Atlanta in the next 5 years, then probably Houston.

  4. Even if they cap it at 34, there are several teams on the brink of relocation every season.

Wouldn’t it be fucked up if we stole the Jets again?

  5. Once we have an arena and an owner, we’ll have a team. The league and the other owners want this market.

The keys are: an arena in prime location, and an owner with deep pockets with significant innate *pride* in the community. A dyed-in-the-wool Arizona guy, not some out-of-state investor with no personal ties to the area.

  6. It’s silly to imagine one of the big 4 not having a team in the Phoenix metro, but it’ll depend on divisional shit and intricacies. It would most likely be one team in the east and another in the west to make it 34, and I imagine Houston is gonna make a push. And as far as ownership goes, at this point it’s gonna take a ragtag group of dedicated folks I think to find someone with pockets, because finding the latter with the passion of the former has been a failing game

  7. Honestly no. What’s going to inevitably happen is a location will be decided upon and then everyone will complain that it’s not in xxx and then people will say if it was in xxx more people would go. It’s gonna go back and forth and it will go to a vote and get shot down. Ideally it would be great if it was in downtown, but there’s no space to put it

  8. Yes. Probably in round 2 of a two part expansion process. Too early to know when it will be.

  9. Yes, it will just take 10-20 years.

Atlanta and Houston will be the next two expansion teams in 4-6 years and we might be in the running after that.

  10. NHL (long term) wants 36 teams. The next 2 are likely Houston and Atlanta, as the infrastructure is in place. I could see us being one of the last 2, with 1 more in the east.

But we are literally a decade at earliest from anything. We dont even have an arena
