Mikko Rantanen Responds to Dallas Stars PULLING Jake Oettinger, WCF Series Loss vs. Edmonton Oilers

[Applause] Just what’s the feeling after that? Obviously the giving up the early goals is something that’s been a problem during this whole series. Is it was it tough to play from behind two nothing? Yeah, it is. I think the whole playoffs was kind of the problem. and we didn’t score the first goal many times and this series I don’t think we did it once. You know, I think the only only lead we had was in the game one. So, it’s for sure easier to play with the lead and and that’s maybe one thing that stings a little bit. You know, we weren’t able to like start start games on the sheet score sheet. You know, we were maybe we started a game well, but we weren’t able to take advantage and score when we had opportunities. How different is it playing with the lead and playing from behind? Yeah, it’s way different. You know, if you look at their how they played the whole series when they had the lead, you know, it’s it’s hard to play against, you know, counterattack. Yeah, counterattack. And then uh if you look at how we played in the third against when we we were up against them, you know, then you start to get oddman rushes because they’re overplaying. That’s kind of what they did to us. So yeah, disappointing, but you know, when you look at the kind of starts of the game, is that more of an execution or a mentality thing? Which one? Sorry. When you look at the first period starts and being down one nothing quite a bit, is it more of an execution thing or a mentality thing that you guys look at when you kind of go into the offseason? Yeah, maybe execution and but I think mostly it’s uh you know it’s just it’s hard to score in the league in this league and and when you get chances to score on a good day you you put those chances away and all of a sudden you get a two goal lead like good example the game four first period you know we were on the on them the whole period you know and getting chances every shift and then one power play and one nothing to them so that’s kind of the difference, you know, when you get a chance, but everybody’s trying to score. You know, it’s maybe Skinner had had a number of this series. Mik, you’ve this is your first playoff run with this team. What’s your takeaway and what this team can do really well in the playoffs and what they still need to learn how to do in the playoffs? Resilient group. You know, I’m very proud how everybody battled. You know, it’s even today obviously very tough start and not ideal to start the game like that but fought back and you know 3-2 had some looks to tie it and then unfortunate break for us to for them to get a breakaway there and but yeah I’m I’m proud and yeah I don’t know it’s too early to say you know what there is to improve you know I think we got a long summer now to think about it and but yeah it’s it’s three years in a row this team has in this close. So, so, uh, I don’t know. It stings for sure. You mentioned the break. You guys fall behind three nothing, battle back to make it 3-2, and then they get that awkward bounce that leads to a breakaway for, of all people, McDavid. Is that the point where maybe you guys started to feel like this just didn’t our time? Yeah. Well, belief was still there for sure. you know, get a goal early in the third, but that those those sting for sure. Um, similar in the third when you get a goal, it’s one goal game. 17 18 minutes left and then chucks chucks a puck in front of the net from behind the net goes in off ESSA. So, another bounce, but earn your bounces in the playoffs and they did. What did you think about the decision to to um bench Jake? I don’t know. know coaches make decisions and we were not ready. We were not helping Jake at all in the first two goals. So, um that’s on us, not on Jake. How surprised were you that you guys weren’t more ready? I know uh in the timeout Jamie said that P said, you know, is pretty much a message to wake up. How surprising was that? Yeah, you know, I thought we had a couple good first shifts, then they score on the power play, then score right after, you know, on a change and get a breakaway, which obviously can’t happen in these kind of games. So, yeah, I think we were ready to start the game and uh but it was uh I don’t know what happened there. You know, they were just the ch they get a chance and they scored. I feel like that’s what that was the start of the game. We’ve had a few series where you had some third period comebacks against Colorado. It seemed like those were You had the one in game one, but it seemed like it’s tougher in game three against Edmonton from the outside. Did it feel like that to you guys, too? Yeah, I think they did a they defended well. You know, we got to give credit to Edmonton. They they defended well series when they had the lead and they played simple, not a lot of mistakes. They make made really hard on us to to generate good looks and and Skinner was making saves when needed. You talked about after Colorado uh that you know you felt like there were some similarities with this team to that 2022 team that you wanted all. Was there ever a point where that feeling changed after that? No, we had belief all the time. you know, I think even those games we lost in Edmonton, I felt felt like could have won at least one of them, you know. So, there was belief until the final buzzer for sure. When you get this far, three straight years, there’s going to be a lot of discussion about what’s the missing link, what’s the missing ingredient. I know you’re still very new here, but just coming in with fresh eyes, is there something you can diagnose that, hey, we need more or I don’t know. I think it’s it’s too early, you know, for me to say right after the series, you know, and, you know, I think we played two good rounds and then kind of they made it hard on us, you know, and and the and we didn’t fight through it enough to earn to win a series or or win tonight to push another another game and and uh you know, we just we just didn’t do enough. You know, we I think everybody tried everything we had and we emptied the tanks, but maybe just give credit to them. They defended really well. What do you learn about Pete Kabore and just his ability to coach a team at this highest level and what he means to this group? Yeah, he means a lot, you know, he’s a great coach. He’s been around for a long time, a lot of experience and and uh he’s a good motivator, you know, on the guys and and uh yeah, only good things to say about him, you know, he he uh he’s good, you know, pumping up everybody, you know, waking us up and for sleeping and he’s just overall good coach. Hey, hey, hey.

  1. Seems like Mikko doesn’t care about winning. He just wants to go home & drink some beers. This guy is not a winner. Canes are happy they got rid of this guy lol 😂

  2. We know what happend for Colorado, it was Rantanen who did it. Dallas have to take one steps, I think Dallas win next time, that team is New and all is different, Rantanen cannot win alone. Bot Robertsons and Hinz potential are so big for Dallas, whole team need one steps, hopefully it happend next year,. This seison Edmonton win 4--1. Dallas cannot win Edmonton was better so much. What Dallas can do next year, they have many young player, but sometimes Edmontos coals are Mcdavisis he made coals, and Dallas was not inside, Dallas team was good, but Edmonton, with Mcdavid were so better. But have good Summeri anything Edmontos and Dallas fans, hello from Finland, I hope you understand. My English is not good but have a good Summeri, hockey comes, and – 25 — 26 is New seison. Hello anybody.

  3. Definitely still hurts seeing Mikko in a Stars Sweater.
We miss you in Colorado and appreciate what you brought to the team and organization.
    We definitely feel the loss.
It pains us Avs Fans to know that Chris Mcfarland didn’t even try to work a contract out, let alone talk about working on a re-signing.
I was really pulling for Dallas after smoking us in the Playoffs. It would of been awesome seeing two head coaches that are best friends going head to head for Lord Stanley’s Cup. Now i gotta root for Florida to take out Edmonton once again this year in the Finals.

  4. He's not all the blame but he played so great in the first two series but was a non factor for the second. Oilers defence did well containing their beat players and skinner was amazing all series except one game.

  5. We failed Otter, Mikko, and Miro. Rest of team, WTF, again. Hockey God's have something against Deboer and Benn. Fire one, trade the other.

  6. Mikko Rantanen is a third liner at the very best. He's one of the worst skaters in the league who had a couple lucky games these playoffs. I'm glad his career is ending like this.
