MLB LIVE🔴 Arizona Diamondbacks vs Washington Nationals – May 30, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
Welcome to the desert and inside Chase Field in Phoenix. We’ve got open air baseball for you on the show. It’s the Washington Nationals and the Arizona Diamondbacks. First pitch coming at you right after the break. First pitch moments away. And on the hill in this one, Zack Gallon and Singi. We were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. And it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point. Maybe that one is absolutely belted and it one hops the wall around first and hustling for second. And he’s there with a leadoff double. Oh, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. Loud contact leads to the double. I mean, you could tell it had extra bases written all over it as it jumped off of his stick. So, the go-ahehead run in scoring position. James Wood now at the plate. Fast ball in for a strike. 0 and one. One of the things amazing with Zack, think about the players he’s been traded with and for. In December of 17, he and Sandy Alcantra were dealt to Miami from the Cardinals for Marcel Ozuna. Then ultimately in July of 19, he went to Arizona for Jazz Chisum. Man at second. [Applause] fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. That one missing inside. And a base hit. Abrams around third. The throws offline. He’s saved and it’s one- nothing. Love how he let that ball travel. Trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. [Music] Nathaniel Low up to hit. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. And that’s in for a strike. in the air right field. Carol gets under it, makes the catch for the out, and there’s one down. As we take a look at the Nationals lineup, Singi, we’re looking at a young lineup here. Not much experience, but they’re going to bring a lot of energy to the field. Yeah, and that’s just it, Boo. We expect this lineup to play hard no matter what. They are an exciting group to watch. And now it’s Keert Ruiz. and fires in a fast ball at 95. Wood the runner at first with one gone in the inning. Gallon checks on the runner and he dives back in safely. And that drops in for a strike quickly in an 02 hole. You’re going to have to give something up here in terms of power if you want to put the ball in play with any authority. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. Man at first, one away. This guy’s seen two change ups in a row. Could be a little vulnerable for a fast ball right here on the ground. A second. Might be two. There’s one over to Pav Smith. It’s a double play. So, one run in the inning on this base hit. It’s an early one- nothing lead. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. back here in the desert. And today’s starter, McKenzie Gore. Chris, his strikeout rate this year among the best all time. He’s truly one of the elite strikeout pitchers in the league. I mean, strikeouts per nine off the chart. So, the opposing team, they know they have their work cut out for him anytime they’re facing this guy or a guy like this that’s going to get the swings and misses. Pretty much in a class of his own when it comes to that category. Bottom of the first and now the right fielder, Corbin Carroll. inside corner and that’s called a strike. Nope. Looks like he thinks that should have been a strike at the top of the zone, but doesn’t seem to be too upset. That’s just a case where I think he’s trying to get a better feel for the umpire strike zone and what he’s going to be calling. That’s just a part of pitching. [Applause] Tied him up inside with that one. Talk about tying a guy up. That was ugly. [Music] Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Now one away. Definitely made him chase a little bit out of the zone right there. I don’t think that’s a strike if he takes it. Pretty textbook pitching. Get ahead in the count. Get the guy in the box on his heels and then force him to chase your pitch where he doesn’t have much of a chance to do any damage. So up next, Heraldo Peromo. That’s in there. Gore certainly one of the best strikeout pitchers in the game. And double-digit strikeouts are not out of the norm in his starts. Here comes a pitch. Not even close there. And it’s a ball and a strike. He wants to give the bullpen the day off and the defense behind him because he knows he can strike anybody out. And the way that hitters are swinging, they’re trying to lift, trying to get the ball in the air. He’s going to take advantage of that. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. On the ground to third, sends it across to first and two quick outs in the bottom of the first here tonight. Now the Diamondbacks lineup as put together by Tory Lavell already trailing by a run in this one. They’ll be looking to get on the scoreboard early on as well. Well, it’s just the one run. So, not too big a hill to climb. But yeah, if they can answer back in this inning or at least in the next couple that’ll maybe settle everyone into this ball game and that includes their own starter on the mount. Lordis Goreel Jr. in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Next offering misses and it’s one and one. There’s a process too, right? The way he goes about setting up hitters. Yeah. And he’s coming right at you. He’s going to get ahead in the count. And when you’re a hitter and you find yourself 0212 with a guy who has three to four pitches that are nasty, you are very defensive and he plays upon that and many times he comes out on top. Swings through that one. It’s a strikeout. So one, two, three go to Diamondbacks. They trail here one- nothing. Back here at Chase Field, top of the second and now it’s Luis Garcia. had a foul ball. Next offering is fouled [Music] back. Fouls that off to the left and will do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. That’s down and in. A slider missed. Definitely a swing and miss slider down and in. He finished that really well. Just couldn’t get him to offer at it. And that’s the inside edge. The countdown two and two. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Timing on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. Didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. And now the switch hitting first baseman Josh Bell. [Music] First offering and it just misses [Music] ball. James Kingsley, our played umpire, consistent as you mentioned and maybe a little generous on the edges. [Music] Next offering is in for a strike. Fans don’t really understand the familiarity and relationship players and coaches have with umpires. I mean, you see them a lot. Yeah, but they’re all out there trying to do their best and perform at a high level. So, when you respect that, I think over time you can develop a relationship with them. fouls one away and now three and two. Rudder at first with no outs here and ball four two aboard base knock and now a free pass. This has the makings of a big inning if they can get a couple more quality at bats. And here’s the rookie center fielder, Robert Hassel the third at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. One’s the count. Next offering is fouled back. First and second, no outs here in the top of the second. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Well, take a look at the three pitch sequence here. Pretty simple in terms of putting him away at the plate. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. Jose Tenna digging in for the Nationals. [Music] First pitch just misses. Garcia the lead runner at second. Bell over at first. So one away inside. Just missed. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. That one outside. Three balls, no strikes. And there’s the automatic. Next offering is fouled back. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. [Applause] Dalon Lyle digging in for the Nationals. just missed. Two outs. Couple of base runners at first and second. Popped in the air left field. Guriel handles the chance. So, the Nats leave a pair, but they lead it one to nothing. And we’re back. Bottom half of inning number two. Another batter now, Josh Naylor. Josh Naylor. First pitch doesn’t find a [Music] zone. Next offering is fouled back. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. And there’s the strike on the outside corner. Foul ball still a one and two [Music] count. Ground ball to the right side. He’ll do it himself. And quickly one away in the second. That is it. Third base, Auio Suarez. Audio Suarez up to hit now. And the first offering is not close. [Music] Nope. That’s off the plate. Ball two. Fast ball for a strike. Looks like a really good fast ball today. You can hear that catcher mitt popping. Looking forward to hearing a lot of that one in this one. One out. Base is empty. Let’s get it going. Swing and a miss. And he was full. Two two count. We got full count. Got him. That K is his third of the game. Off to a strong start, Singy, as he’s punched out three of the first five he’s faced. Oh, he’s definitely minimizing contact. He can get the swing and miss when he needs it, but he’ll also keep the defense fresh behind him, allowing some balls in play as well. Payman Smith the next to hit and misses inside. Two outs. Base is empty. Let’s go back. Come on, [Music] Diamond. On the ground to third, zips it across and Arizona is set down. One, two, three. Nothing doing here this half. We play too full. It’s the Nationals one and the Diamondbacks nothing. Top half of the third inning. There’s the shorts stop at the plate. CJ Abrams. Gallon back to work. That’s a little bit low. right through there for a strike. That misses and a count. Two and one. Looks like he’s being a little cautious with him in this at bat after doubling the first time up. Doesn’t want to make another mistake. stays alive. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. You usually are going to see that inside fast ball a little longer coming in from the opposite side, but that pitch really got in on him right there. I mean, that’s a wellthrown pitch. Tough to do anything with that in terms of getting the hands through and the sweet spot of the bat to the baseball. Wood stands in here, takes ball one low. Swing and a ball ripped right field and that one back and that one is gone. And they tack one on the board. It’s two nothing. [Applause] With a low 90s fast ball, you have to live on the edges and hit your spots. If you don’t, you’ll get hit hard. Really good swing there. Patient and waited for it. It was like BP all over again. Here’s Nathaniel Low. Flyed to right his first time. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Part of the order coming through now. And with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. Low in his fifth season, hitting third in the lineup. And he’s usually a first baseman, but today he’s the designated hitter. And that one missing low. Some people say that first base kind of have the day off regularly because they don’t run around a whole lot. But when you think about it, they are involved in just about every single play and there’s a lot of stress that gets put on their legs. So a welldeserved day at the DH spot for him. Popped up to the left into foul ground reaching for it. Makes the catch. Now that catcher Kbert Ruiz two down, base is empty. Kbert Ruiz digging in for the Nationals. He’s 0 for one. Ball one. No strikes. 10 and a swing to miss. Spin rates outstanding on that high fast. Really tough to hit. [Laughter] Good job to fight that one off. Pitch is in the dirt and the count’s even at two. That’s inside. two. Two down, base is empty, but one run across. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. That’s hard hit in the line. Stretches out and hauls it in. One in the inning for the Nationals on the solo homer. It’s now a two nothing ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show and welcome back to the ballpark. And now the center fielder, Alec Thomas. Thomas out towards right center. That’s well struck. And no one can get there. Makes the turn and heads for second. And he starts the bottom of the third with a double. Oh, no waiting around right there. He was ready to swing it on the first pitch. That pretty much split the zone down the middle. And those are the ones where you got to make them pay. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Here’s a speed threat. Jordan Lawler trying to pick up his first knock in the big leagues. And a fast ball misses outside for a ball. And that’s ball one. Come on. Out in front with the swing. And that is strike one. One strike. [Music] And that’s outside. Two and one. [Music] That’s ball three. Three balls. No outs. Runner on second. And ball four to a board. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. Pretty much gifted in first base with a quick free pass. Herrera. Jose Herrera will hit next. Come on. That is upstairs for ball one. Tying run is a first here in the last half of the third. And there’s the strike. So hard to touch being at the top of the zone. 99, 98, even 97 as pitchers do such a good job of teasing that part of the zone, just elevating a little bit. It looks good because you see it for a good while as a hitter. looks juicy and by the time you swing it’s almost in the catcher’s mid. Swings and misses on the fast ball up in the zone for the strike out. Boo gets talked about a lot, but a good high fast ball in a two strike situation, it’s just become such a problem for hitters in more recent years with all of the emphasis by pitchers on developing that spin rate, having a good grip on the baseball. Those high fast balls, they kind of look like to the hitter that they’re rising even though they’re not. But they’re not decreasing in velocity and spin rate. So very difficult to get the barrel on it. Runners at first and second with one gone. Squirts away a little bit. No advance. Good job behind the dish. Now fly ball to right center. Hassel moving under it. Drops into the glove. Two down. Up next for the Diamondbacks. Short stop. And the batter will be the shortstop. Peraldo Pomo grounded out his first time up. Edge of the zone for a strike and it’s 0 and one. Thomas over at second. Lawler on first with two down. And that misses. And the count even one and one. Was good pitch there. Billy had some run and finished little up and in just on the edge and that’s one of those if you swing at it a broken bat you jog back to the dugout. A short stop takes the ball. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with three hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. Two aboard, two outs, and that’ll load the bases. Well, that sets up a really big at bat in this game. These are the moments when everyone in the stadium gets really locked in. Here’s Lordis Guriel Jr. struck out swinging his first time. Closed but called a ball and that is ball one. Two outs. Bases are full. Right through there for a strike. swing and a miss as he was late that time. Really going after him here. All fast balls to get ahead in the count. And that is downstairs and the count is even. Two and two. Garcia throws to first in time. Out to escape a bases loaded jam. Unscathed. Diamondbacks leave them loaded and they’re down two nothing. [Music] Back here in the desert now it’s the second baseman Luis Garcia. line drive gets down. Base hit and the leadoff man aboard. Here’s Josh Bell walked his first time. This one kicks away a little as he can’t squeeze it, but no advance. That’s ball one. and that drops in for a strike. You know, these Nationals showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. They’re doing a good job of working the pitch count and they’ve been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well. Nobody out. runner at first, fouls one off. Two and two. Still relatively early, but with a pair of runs already on the board, the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set them up to do more damage later in this game. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Battling here as he fouls it away. spoils that one and it remains two and two. That one missed. about to see the 11th pitch of the IFAB here. That one lifted to left. Guriel trying to get there and it’s caught for the out. Now batting center Robert Hassel. And stepping in is the speedy Robert Hassel II third. Struck out swinging his first time. That’s in for a strike. Nasty pitch. This guy absolutely flies. The defense wants to turn two, but they’ve got to get a ball they can do it with. Make sure you get the first out before you try to rush and get two and end up with nothing. Next offering is downstairs. [Music] swings and misses. Struck him out. Well, I don’t think there’s a hitter alive that hasn’t at some point succumbed to that pitch right there. It just looks like it’s in the zone the entire way and then the top spin and gravity take over in the blink of an eye and it’s just such a tough pitch to lay off of. Up now for Washington. Jose Tenna, he was a strikeout victim his first time. And it gets by him. Coming home. He’ll score. First pitch swinging. Went up there with a plan to be aggressive. A lot of hitters tell themselves line drive over the infielder’s head. That’s what I’m trying to do. Just keep that approach simple. And right there it was perfectly executed on time with everything and pulled it into the gap nicely. So runner at second, two down. And now up for Washington. Dalon Lyle fly to left his first time. And that one just misses a ball and no strikes. Next offering is fouled back. Man on second. Two down. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. Very well executed change up right there. If he can command the fast ball consistently, that’s going to be an important pitch in terms of him turning this outing around. Just misses with that one. Really good take, especially with two strikes in the dirt. swing and a ground ball up the middle. The throw to first that ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. One for the Nationals on this RBI double. It’s now 3 nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back here at Chase Field, John Chi and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Josh Naylor. swings and misses at the pitch off the plate. You know, these Dbacks just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see. But I think they have to that misses the zone. One and two to count. Looking good. Hit in the air out to center field and makes the grab and there’s one down. Now batting third Suarez up to the plate now. Caught looking his first time up. And that’s outside. One down. Base is empty. That’s in there. And the count one and one. He must have been looking for something else cuz he gave up on that pitch a little early. It was right down Main Street. Probably not going to see a better pitch to hit in this at bat. Next offering upstairs. Way to lay off that fast ball up right there. You’re looking for something you see well that you can handle, but you also have to keep the discipline so that you’re not popping up pitches that are just a little too high. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. [Music] CIA strikes him out for the second time today. Now that is two outs, space is empty. Pay Smith getting ready to hit. 0 for one so far. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus. But they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. And that is in for a strike. And it’s one and one. One ball, one strike. And he takes a strike. One ball, two strikes. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Two down, nobody on. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Next one misses. Now two and two. Little bit low. Wow, this guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity outside and that is ball four. It wasn’t easy, but he earned that walk after a long at bat. Well, two out walks are never good, especially when you’re trying to get back into that dugout. But he’s still in a good spot. He’s just got to refocus and deal with the bottom of this order. Thomas in the box now. No balls in a strike. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. Usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. Fast ball for a strike at 95. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the walls. Going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. Two outs. And that one upstairs. Ball one. One ball, two strikes to count. Swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. They stop the lead runner at second. Now two on with two outs. Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night. And just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. And here is Jordan Lawler just off the inside edge. Inside corner for a strike. I got a ball. One strike. The 1-1 is fouled off. In the dirt, but kept close. And an excellent job keeping it right there. gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Lined and that’s a base hit now. A long throw home, but it’s offline and now just a two-run deficit. Back-to-back singles. I can watch base hits like that all day long. and so could every hitting coach in the league. Just a nice line drive into center field. First and second, two outs. Now the Dbacks catcher, Jose Herrera 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. Fouled off down the right side. laboring here about to throw his 30th pitch of the inning. [Music] Next offering way upstairs. And there’s a ball. Two strikes swing and a miss. Struck him out. Good job at damage control right there. He’s in a tough spot. Had to make a great pitch. Did it. Got the strike out. Gets out of the jam. Clearly he’s happy with those results. We’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. Jaylen Beaks. Well, he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year and that’s his first test. This looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup. Back to the top of the order now for CJ Abrams now. One for two. drops one down in front of the plate. He’s safe on with a blunt single. It was racing down the line and probably didn’t assume he was going to be safe until his foot hit the bag and looked up for the umpire. Nice bunt and great hustle to get himself a knock. James Wood digging in for the Nationals. He’s already homerred in this game. That one hit the knees for a strike. Pitch misses. Ball one. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Kevin Ginkle up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. Martinez a hard throwing right-hander up as well. Runner on the go. And that’s pushed foul off to the left and out of play. Abrams aboard here at first with nobody out. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. That one in the dirt and gets away. You know, sometimes it takes a reliever a little time to get comfortable with the mound out there, especially when they come in trying to be nasty with every pitch they throw. Not exactly what they were looking for when they called him in, though. We’ll see if he can settle down. cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count off and two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. And here’s the DH for Washington. Nathaniel Low 0 for two in this one and a base hit up the middle headed for the plate. The throw in. He’ll score easily and they’re up by three. Well, clearly he was ready to hit right there. That’s about as textbook as it gets. Got his stride and load out of the way early. He stayed inside that ball and squared it up out front. Man, that was like he was in the cage hitting off a TE. And now the switch in catcher K Barrett Ruiz counts one and in the dirt blocked. Here goes the runner swinging a popup. Smith on the move. He makes the catch and there’s two down. Here’s the second baseman, Luis Garcia. He’s two for two. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. Thomas makes the grab on the run, but they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s now a 4-1 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. And we’re back. This is Corbin Carroll. Pitch misses and it’s one and0. Activity in the bullpen. Mitchell Parker looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez. Williams the right-hander loosening up as well. [Applause] Just missed right now. Behind in the count, two balls and no strikes. No free passes. You can’t allow that. And another ball. I got three and fast ball for a strike. Thought the green light might be on right there, but maybe not. If you’re looking to swing in that count, that’s the pitch you want. Swinging a foul out of play. Laser could be troubled around first heading for two and he’s got a lead off double. Well, here we are. Third time through the order and this is where we see the OPS jump up. manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner than he anticipated. [Applause] Now it’s the short stop. Peraldo Purdomo. He’s 0 for one. That’s off the inside corner. One [Music] and0 fouled off. Runner at second. Nobody out. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Ugly swing right there. has been able to go inside as well as outside. Effectively working both sides of the plate in this at bat. This one in the air. Garcia and puts the squeeze on that one. And there’s one away. Now that is the fielder Lordis Goreel Jr. And it’s Lordis Goreel Jr. That’s way outside. And that’s ball one. and downstairs. [Applause] Late swing fouled off and that one is lifted in the air. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s two down. Now that is designated hitter Josh. And now it’s Josh Naylor. Drilled out towards left center field. That’s back there. onto the warning track and he hauls it in. A double in the inning, but they leave him stranded. Five innings complete. It’s the Nationals four and the Diamondbacks won. Top of the sixth inning, Josh Bell at the plate now. Josh. Well, on paper, it’s favorable to have a fairly quick inning here with two of the three hitters he’s set to face batting from the left side, same side he throws from. Well, these Nats putting together some really good at bats in this game. There’s been a lot to like with how they’re approaching their chances at the plate. They really made that opposing starter work in this one. Ran his pitch count up and now they’ve got an opportunity to continue making things difficult on the bullpen. That clips a corner. And no, they haven’t broken through in a big way in the runs column, but with the way they’re grinding out at bats, it definitely feels like there’s potential for more coming. Fouled off left side. Still two and two after the foul ball. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another And that one is downstairs. And the count is filled up. gets a piece and stays alive. Five foul balls in this at bat so far and these two are going headto head. You can see the crowd. They’re starting to get into it a little bit more and more each pitch even though there hasn’t been a ball in play yet. Thomas makes the grab. One away. [Applause] Robert. Next, a hit for the Nats. Robert Hassel the third who’s 0 for two with a pair of [Applause] strikeouts. Swinging a foul straight back. Just missed. Base is empty. One away. And we’re the top half of the sixth. Strike two on the ground to third. Suarez zips it to first. Two away. [Applause] Two down. Base is empty. Jose Tenna digs in now. Tenna goes 5 feet 11 in 195 lbs. He joined the team as a free agent. Just missed. Tried to check his swing there. Appeal to third. Eddie went says Larry Bullard. Tap to first. Smith. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Nothing doing for the offense that time. We go to the bottom half of inning number six and the 567 slots do up. It’s the Nationals four and the Diamondbacks won. So they turn to the lefty in this spot, Mitchell Parker. And he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. Parker, Au Heno Suarez stands in now for the Diamondbacks. base. Amy Hio Suarez in there at the knees and that is strike one. Well, in this one, the offense has sputtered. Somebody’s got to find a way to get on, keep the line moving and manufacture at least one run. Then maybe you get two or three. That’s a slider for a strike. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Jose A. Ferrer appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. Brixie getting cranked up as well. That’s off the mark now. One and two. O2 fast way out of the zone. I think he’s trying to speed him up. Got to stay back. Off speed’s probably coming. outside and it’s two and two. Swinging a ground ball. Gets it to first. One away. Bottom of the six. Now that is the first base Smith. So digging in Pav Smith off the plate and that’s ball one. The Dbacks trailing by three here in the bottom of the sixth. Swings through that one for strike one. One and one. That pitch gets the corner and the count one and two. A one two count. All he’s seen is fast balls. You’ve got to expect something off speed. Stay back. Outside low and the count now even up. goes down looking. Frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter and I’m sure that’s going to sit on him for a little while. You want to be ready to hit the fast ball. Sometimes you can overthink things and I think that was the case right there. Alec Thomas now his splits between April and May there. That missed by a lot. Ball one. Well, as good as things can be, it can be a tough day at the office, even for the skippers, seeing the offense just sputter. Not able to get anything going. Next offering upstairs. [Music] And another ball. Well, I would expect in this three 0 count, you’re taking all the way. See if they’ll walk you. That’s in for a strike at 95. And it’s three and one. [Music] Swing and a highf fly ball out towards right center field. Hassel pulls it into the inning. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Justin Martinez. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. So digging in, Dalen Lyle. Going check swing and he went. That’s strike one. One’s the count. And that one fouled off. on the ground to first. Fair ball. Well, he found himself behind in the count right there, but he didn’t give in. He got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point. Pretty impressive for an 02 count. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So, we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Here’s CJ Abrams to hit. That’s too low. And that is ball one. Lyle on at first. Nobody out. Sanker catches the zone at the knees. The Diamondbacks with some movement in the pen. Kevin Ginkle up and throwing. [Music] to third. Suarez one at second over to Pave Smith. It’s a double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. Here’s the left fielder, James Wood. He blasted one out earlier in the third. Just a solo home run, but an important swing of the bat in this game. We’ve already seen him do it once. Can he do it again? just missed. Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So, it’s a good take by him. That misses and now two and0. Two down, nobody on here in the top half of inning number seven. chest missed and it’s fouled away. You got this. Three and two. The pitch is outside and ball four. Well, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. Nathaniel Low now at the plate. Just missed. Yo, the two out walk. got to erase that and really go to work on the hitter. You got to go ahead and just let him steal if he’s going to try to create the swing and miss and get out of this jam. And you wonder, is he in his head a little bit? Even if the base runner doesn’t steal right here, what’s great is that he is dividing the attention of the pitcher and may serve to give his teammate a better pitch to hit at the plate. Back when you played, it wasn’t the empirical data we have now. It was a guy with a ruler and a diamond taking a colored pencil and drawing a line where he thought someone had hit the ball. Right. That or just going off of gut or feel. What does it look like his swing is today? What’s the pitcher throwing? They are sticking to the metrics and what seems to be most consistent for that hitter regardless of who the pitcher is on the mound. Cut on and miss. Struck him out. That ends the frame. So, one left for Washington, but they lead it four to one. [Music] We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh, Jose A. Ferrer. And he’s been hit pretty hard at times this year. So, he’s looking for better right now. Giving up more than a hit perenny. So digging in Jordan Lawler the walk and he’s also singled the Diamondbacks in striking distance but had some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laidoff man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. Cut on and lifted in the air and a quick out number one. Now that the catcher Jose Herrera and here’s the catcher Jose Herrera. Well, both sides equally as strong, so not a good time to try to turn him around with a belief pitcher and put him on the other side of the plate. Liner caught at second. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove. But you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. Carol stands in now and watches strike one. Ripped, but a curls fouled. Well, that ball was hit pretty hard and sure had home run distance, but if you’re the pitcher out there on the mound, you execute it. Just a long strike. You go after him and finish him off. Just off the inside corner and the count one and two. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to that kind of velocity. You’d prefer that pitcher work away. Breaking ball in there. Got him looking. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three. Nothing doing for Arizona and they trail it 4-1. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Kevin Ginkle. Pretty tight game, so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Now it’s the Nationals cleanup hitter Kar Ruiz 0 for three in this one. And a pitch. Just missed. [Music] Come on. Come on. You can do it. Late on that fast. Threw that fast right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder. And a swing and a miss. There’s that slider. Clearly was seen on a fast right there and just ended up out in front of the slider. Hey, you can’t fault him for his commitment. Now he’s just going to have to battle with two strikes. Fouls it off. Still one and two. blows the high heat past him. That’s a strike out. With that kind of velocity, an elevated fast ball, even if it’s still in the strike zone, can be tough for hitters to get on top of. Now it’s the second baseman, Luis Garcia. Top of the zone for a strike. It’s 0 and one. movement in the bullpen. Ryan Thompson appears to be getting loose. Fast ball for a strike and the count is 0 and2. He doesn’t seem to like to pitch up. Hasn’t offered on either one of those pitches. 02 count now. I think the guy’s going to climb the ladder out there. Foul ball still 0 and two. Base is empty, one away. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Outside low. Going to count one and two. [Music] And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. swings through that and it’s a strike out. That’s the second out. Very strong coming out of the pin so far as he punches out the first two batters he’s faced in this one. Getting straight to work. Man, it’s talked about a lot, but relievers are just so electric these days. These aren’t fun at bats if you’re a hitter. And I’m so glad I’m retired. Bell in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. More and more guys are looking to slug regardless of the count in this situation. We’ll keep a close eye on his approach. And that’s in the dirt. two straight and that one missing low. Great job of laying off those pitches down in the zone to even the count up at two and two. Such a better feeling for the hitter on the ground. Lawler to first. Nats go down one, two, three. So they make short work of him there. Last half of the eighth coming up, it’s the Nationals four and the Diamondbacks won. Back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, Zack Brixie. Now pitching for Washington, number 66, Zack Brixie. And now the short stop Paldo Pomo stop swinging in a ground ball and that one gets through into center field. So runner aboard to start the inning. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. Just kept it simple. played separate with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from and there’s just no one there to knock it down. Here’s Guriel 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. And the first pitch misses for ball one. If you’re going to get something going, this is the time to do it. You get the leadoff man on. Everybody’s got to look over the shoulder and say, “I’m just going to keep the line moving.” Don’t try to do too much. Griel gets a piece. Little chopper rolls. Foul. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. [Music] in the dirt. Purdomo gets his lead at first with nobody out. Duke, [Applause] maybe a two ball. Five, four, out, three, and they turn the double play. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leagers. They make tough plays look simple. Here’s Josh Naylor 0 for three with two fly outs and a ground out. And first off is fouled off. The Dbacks trailing by three here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Foul ball [Music] there. Pitch misses there. It’s a ball in two strikes. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. Two down. Nobody on. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Swing and a miss. dropped him out and a nice inning of work there as he sets him down. One, two, three. Diamondbacks down quickly and this is still a 41 ball game. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Ryan Thompson, left-handed batter at the plate and he’s been excellent in those matchups this year. So, this seems like a calculated move. Brian Thompson. Here’s the center fielder, Robert Hassel. I the third 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. Just missed. Activity in the bullpen. Number 67 up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. swing and a chopper out to short. Slings it across and they get the lead off man in the ninth. Had to make a perfect play right there after that nice backhand stop and he did. He couldn’t have transferred the ball from his glove to his hand any better than he did. Just an excellent release. Up now for Washington. Jose Tenna. That one’s in there. That’s strike one. Thompson, the tall righty. He features a sinker, a slider, and he works in a four seamer. Swing and a miss. That’s strike two. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. One down. Base is empty. And that just misses. Now a slow roller to second. Over to first. And a couple of quick outs. [Applause] Two outs. Base is empty. And now up for Washington. Dalen Lyall. One for three. [Music] First pitch. Not close. lined and that’s a base hit. So now back to the top of the order. Now that short stop. Here’s the shorts stop at the play. CJ Abrams. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. One and0. [Music] bounced out to short. They take the force out and the inning is over. So, no runs here on a base hit. No errors and one left. Five, six, and seven will lead things off in the bottom of the ninth. It’s the Nationals four and the Diamondbacks won. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Kyle Fit again. And I can’t imagine any save is an easy one. You’re holding a small lead on the scoreboard and you know those hitters are going to give you the best at bats they can. So it’s always high stress. Let’s see what he’s got here to try and close it out. Here’s the third baseman, Au Heno Suarez. and delivers outside. There’s the swing and a miss. Well, that’s today’s stout of baseball right there. Right. Big time VO on the bump and big time pop at the plate. And that one in there at the knees for a strike. And the count one and two. Swinging a highf fly ball deep left field. That one back there. Great catch. Foul ground up against the wall. Good pitch. He just kind of had him out in front on that pitch away and wasn’t able to stay closed. He’s two outs away. Pay Smith stands in now for the Diamondbacks. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Well, so many hard throwing relievers in the game these days, you would think that hitters have made the adjustment, but I don’t know if you ever get used to it. Just pumping. Now, this ball is well hit. This one’s got a chance. And that’s a foul ball. that misses the zone. Now one and two. The Nationals trying to close out a three-run lead here in the last half of inning number nine. Swing and a miss. Splitter in the dirt. Ruiz down to first with it. And there’s two gone following the strike out. First strike out for him in this one. That splitter is maybe the go-to pitch when he’s looking for a swing and miss like that. He throws it quite a bit and that’s a good example of the effect it can have on a hitter. Diamondbacks down to their final out. And now the center fielder, Alec Thomas. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Two down, nobody on. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. That one pushed to the left and fouled. Next offering is in for a strike. One ball, two strikes. This could end it on the ground to third and this should do it. throw to first in time. Ball game and the Nationals claim the win here behind some great pitching and defense. Sometimes it takes just getting away from home. Players can sort of come together, connect a little bit more than they do when they’re at home with their families and that can breed to success on the field as we saw in this game today. Excellent win by this team. 4-1 the final here today for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami saying so long.
