MLB LIVE🔴 Toronto Blue Jays vs Oakland Athletics – May 30, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
and welcome into the ballpark. Happy to have you with us. We bring you Friday baseball on the show. It’s the Athletics and the Toronto Blue Jays. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. Toronto day about to get started here. And on the mound today, Kevin Gossman. Base runners are tough to come by with him out there, Chris. Well, he brings into this one an excellent strikeout to walk ratio on the season. And when you consider the amount of swings and misses that he gets and the fact that he’s not issuing free passes, that’s going to make him more economical in his pitch count, allow him to move into the middle and deeper part of ball games. So, we’ll see if that remains true in this one. [Music] The shorts stop takes the ball. The 1-1 is fouled off. Goes down looking. [Applause] Next is the designated hitter Brent Rooker. That’s in there. And that’s strike one. Gosman, the 62 righty. He features a fourseam fast ball, a splitter, a slider, and he works in a [Music] sinker. One down, base is empty. And a pop off right side. Foul territory. Two up, two down. And time now to check out the A’s lineup. And singy, I’m a bit surprised to see this many righties in the lineup against a right-hander. Yeah, you’re not the only one, Boo. I’m a bit surprised as well. And you know, some hitters work well against same-handed pitching. You know, just back in 2024, Bobby Whit Jr., Vlad Guerrero Jr., and Aaron Judge all had higher batting averages against righties than they did against lefties. So maybe they got a plan after all. Tyler Soderstrom the next to hit takes ball one. Next pitch off the play, ball two. Sliced hard but fouled down the left side. Yeah, baby. Got him looking as the fast ball runs back over the inside corner. A’s go quickly and quietly there. And now the Blue Jays will get their initial shot. No score. Back after this on the show. Back here at Rogers Center. Our starter in this one, Gunnar Hogland. What’s the scouting report on him? Well, you know, this guy wants to be better than that. I mean, the ERA is bloated. He understands that he’s got to put his team in a better position to win ball games. And at this point, you have to forget about your own individual stats and you have to go out there and attack and try to get that W. And if you do that, you’ll look up and most likely that erra will have dropped over time. Cut on and lifted in the air. Sodrom settles under it and makes the catch. And there’s one away. Let’s take a look at the lineup for the Blue Jays. This team, Chris, not one that gets a lot of production from hitting homers. So, they’ve got to find offense in other ways. Yeah, Boo. Hit sequencing is so important for this team. You know, getting that walk at the right time, coming up with that next knock or extra base hit so that you can actually play to run. If not, then you see the record go in the direct opposite direction of where it could go. So, you know, a team like this, the good thing they’re going to battle. They’re going to put the ball in play and hope that they can find those holes. One out. Base is empty. One and one. Robert to right field way back. Gone. He sends one out the opposite way. It’s one- nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. That’s the exact definition of hitting the ball where it’s pitched. Taking that outside fast and driving it the opposite way out of the ballpark. You want to bottle that type of approach. One down. And now for the Jays. Daltton Vo put that 600 slugging into context. The league average usually in the low 400s. Swing and a miss. part of the order coming through now. And with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. And that one is in the dirt and it’s one and one. The 1-1 is fouled off. clearly trying to stay back a little bit longer for that change up as he fells that fast ball back. Next pitch is downstairs. Really good take, especially with two strikes. That’s off the inside corner. Full count. Three and two outside and that is ball four. It’s not easy laying off that pitch. It’s designed to fool you, but he just wasn’t fooled at all. One gone runner at first. Now the Toronto four-hole hitter, Alejandro Kirk. Seems like he’s making contact with everything lately. Hitting better than 35. Urias beats to second out there. And that’s two. Vlad Guerrero Jr. with the solo shot for Toronto. It’s now one- nothing. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Second inning set to go. Here’s Miguel and Duhar. Miguel and Gosman back to work inside corner and that’s called a strike. And that is out of play. Looked like he got a little excited on that fast ball. Got to think to yourself, I want to stay up the middle that way. If you’re a little bit early, you hit it out of the ballpark. If you’re a little late, opposite field, not this to center field. Got it. Nice grab. And there’s one away. Here’s Luis Oas. And that misses one and0. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Larry Bullard making the calls behind the plate for us in this one. Pretty good strike zone. well reviewed by those we talked to around the league. Yeah, he’s an umpire. He doesn’t get a lot of looks from players. Maybe here and there once in a while, but he’s appreciated back there. Now, three and 0. Chris, do players ever change their approach in meaningful ways based on who’s umpiring or is it good to just be aware of tendencies so you’re not that surprised? I’d say the latter because pitchers got to pitch to his strengths regardless. The hitters got to hit to his strength. So, you’re aware of it, but you have to just hunt for what you can handle. As the game has moved along, we see more and more information supplied by teams about the umpires. I’ve been in clubous where they have pictures of all four umpires, nicknames, hometowns, and as well hobbies listed just so you can kind of small talk the umpire a little bit. That’s great. Swing and a miss. And he chases that one in the dirt. Pow. Two away now after the drop third strike. Off to a strong start, Singy, as he’s punched out three of the first five he’s faced. Well, he’s definitely minimizing contact. He can get the swing and miss when he needs it, but he’ll also keep the defense fresh behind him, allowing some balls in play as well. Here’s Logan Davidson. Foul [Music] ball. The one that’s pushed foul off to the left and out of play. Foul ball still 0 and two. Here comes the pitch. Ball one there. [Music] Two outs. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. It’s two and two. Well, clearly not too happy with the call there. Thought he caught the top of the zone and you could pretty much read his lips saying that’s not up. Two outs. Base is empty. Got him looking. And it’s a three up, three down in it. And one, two, three go the A’s. And it remains one- nothing. Back now in Toronto. And now Anthony Santandere. Anthony Santandere. [Music] Off the mark there and it’s one and0. [Music] I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. went with the sweeper for the strike. Looks like he’s just sizing him up there. Really good pitch to hit, but he took it all the way. Sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game. That may be a pitch that he turns on. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider the other way and he beats the shift. Little Baltimore chop action for the base hit. man aboard on a leadoff single. Just a simple ground ball the other way. They had eyes on it, man. Sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel, put the ball in play, and just hope it finds a hole. So, up next for Toronto, Addison Barger. First pitch not close. Swinging at a highf fly ball. Well struck. That’s back. Long [Applause] gone. A two-run homer. third home run of the season. It’s 3 nothing. When you’re working with this kind of velocity, so critical that you move the ball around, work quickly, and make sure that you keep that hitter off balance. Clearly not fooled by the location or the velocity. He was all over that fast. And now it’s going to be Ernie Clemeno. One strike. [Music] Lifted in the air down the left side. And there’s a hit. Bad at first. Next to hit, Michael Stefonic. Slider misses outside. Next one misses and now two and 0. Nobody out with a pair of runs across in the frame. Bottom half of inning number two. swing and a pop off in foul ground. And Duhar calls it in and there’s one away. Got the pitch that he wanted. Just a little bit quick. Front shoulder open. Backside collapsed a little bit and the launch angle not where he needed it to be. Nathan Lucas next up for the Blue Jays. Throw over to first. Clement back in on a dive. Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. One strike him out looking. Tunnled that pitch. Thought it was going to be a slider breaking in off the blade, but it hung the corner. And at that point, when he recognized it, it was just too late. So, the batting order turns over. Bobette gets a chance to hit. Fly to left his first time. He swings and fouls one [Music] [Applause] off. Swing and a ball lined out towards center. Clark makes the grab and that’s the inning. The Jays get a pair on this homer. It’s now three nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Out of the third inning. And now Lawrence Butler. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. First pitch strike right there for him. He’s going to have to do that consistently if he’s going to give any length to his skipper. And now the count is even. Yeah, that’s too high. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. up the middle. Bette on the run. Sends it over to first. Nicely done for the out. That’s what a good sinker is designed to do. Get a guy to roll over a little bit. Hit the ball on the ground. Kill some worms while you’re at it. And here’s the rookie catcher, Willie Macgyver. And first offering is fouled off. Well, the offense has gotten going and a pitcher wants to go out there, have a real quick inning, get those guys back into the dugout so those bats can stay hot. [Music] And down on strikes now. Five strikeouts for him on the mound. No, that’s not the best two strike fast ball I’ve seen, but certainly got away with the location there. You know, sometimes as a hitter when you’re down in the count, you’re so focused on a pitcher painting the black and you just get a little bit locked up on something down the heart of the plate, not expecting it, and it just kind of freezes you. [Music] Two down to that one is downstairs. And the count is one and one. swinging a miss at a slider. Clearly was sitting on a fast ball right there and just ended up out in front of the slider. Hey, you can’t fault him for his commitment. Now he’s just going to have to battle two strikes. [Music] And they’ll do it again. The one, two, caught him looking for the K. And the A’s are gone in order. They trail it here. 3 nothing. ready to go for the last half of the inning. Now it’s the DH Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Guerrero Juni. This is a guy that grew up in big league clubouses and it’s something that you see throughout the game. Sons whose fathers also played the majors. on the ground to the left and that chance handled in plenty of time to first. Leadoff man retired here in the third. Now batting center and now it’s Daltton Baro walked his first time. [Music] fought off foul. [Music] That one finds the corner. Oh, and two [Music] and ball one. That missed inside and the count’s even at two. Highf fly ball out to center field. Clark and makes the grab. Two down. Now the catcher. And now the Toronto cleanup hitter, Alejandro Kirk. This guy one of the best defensive catchers going. You talk about framing, the ability to block, catch, and throw. He is at the top of the game. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Still manages a throw. Misplay doesn’t cost him. Inning over. No runs, no hits, no errors. On to inning number four. It’s the Blue Jays three and the A’s nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. John Shambi with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Jacob Wilson. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Really good athlete. And many times we talk about, you know, the feet of infielders. This catcher as well, really quick feet. He’s able to recognize the pitch, see the trajectory, and get into a spot where he can block those balls and keep them from going to the back stop. really impressive with the way he frames, the way that he sets it up because sometimes those pitches are off the plate, but because he sets up and presents it so well, he still strikes for his pitcher. And Chris, beyond the fact that he’s so incredible defensively, he also can swing the stick. The shorts stop takes the ball. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another bounced out to short. Bishette whips it to first. That’s the first out in the top of the fourth. Now batting designated hitter Brent Brooker. So now the DH spot, Brent Rooker. Rooker in his fourth year, 30 years old now. He’s usually in right field, but today he’s getting the DH treatment. Misses outside. Ball one. Well, a nice day off for him, not having to jog out to the outfield. Gets to be in the DH spot. Be curious to see how he keeps himself in a rhythm, not playing defense. And another ball. Two and0. Right through there for a strike. Two and one. [Music] Next offering is in for a strike. The A’s still looking for their first hit in this one. Knocks that one away and will do it again. One down, base is empty, and a swing and a miss. Picks up strikeout number seven. Quite the start to this game on the mound. Looking very dangerous to these hitters. Seven punch outs already. So, this lineup hasn’t had much success trying to figure him out. I’m impressed with what we’re seeing here. Soder Strike swings through that one as he comes to the plate for the second time today. Hammered down the right side but fouled. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. [Music] That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Base hit center field. So, a two out knocks the inning alive. I don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike, but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock. Two outs, runner at first. Now the third baseman, Miguel Anduhar swaying at a ball popped in the air. Bette makes the catch and that is that. The A’s strand one. They trail in this one. Three nothing. And we’re back. And now the right fielder Anthony Santandere. Anthony Santair. And that one upstairs. Ball one. Well, these Blue Jays doing a good job of simply getting the bat on the ball in this game. And the numbers back that up. And here’s a stat for you, Boo. They’re making contact with more than 85% of the pitches that they’re swinging at. It’s pretty special stuff. Not so good if you’re out there on the mound. Next offering way off the plate. Fast ball catches the corner at the knees. [Music] Swings through that one. threw that fast ball right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder. [Music] That one misses. So, a lead off walk. I don’t think he really wanted to pitch to him right there anyhow. Addison Barker next up for the Blue Jays. He’s already homerred in this game. And that’s outside. Maybe losing command a little bit after the walk. Next pitch. Not even close. One more time. [Music] out to center. Clark sizes this one up and there’s one down. Up next for the Blue Jays, first baseman Ernie Clemen. And next for Toronto, Ernie Clemens. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively, but runs pretty well. So, when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. outside. What about him playing another position on defense, one that would require a little more range? Absolutely. And I think if push came to shove where they had to make a a move during a game could surprise. What a stop. There’s one. What a double play that was. Inning over. So no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left. We’ve played four. It’s the Blue Jays three and the A’s nothing. Ready now for the fifth inning. Leading off Luis Urias. Gosman back to work. Well, he’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average. And that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point. And there’s a ball. His understanding the strike zone. Very impressive. That was a very close O2 fast ball. I just don’t know how you take that. [Music] inside and it’s two to a two and that just misses. Now in this three ball count down in the ball game, you got to be very selective. Take your walk if they’ll give it to you. On the ground right side and that one handled over to first and the lead offense set down in their half of the fifth. Oh, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Logan Davidson up next for the A’s. He was a strikeout victim his first time. That one finds the zone. Strike one. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. swings through that one. It’s a strike out. Two outs. Base is empty. Lawrence Butler up next for the A’s. Grounded out his first time. Give it to Toronto. Popped up right side. Clement under it. Nabs it and that’s the third out. Nothing doing there for the A’s. Still down three nothing. We head to the bottom of the fifth. And now for the Jays. Michael Stefonic. Michael Stefer for a strike and it’s 0 and one. Slashed foul down the right side. That’ll hook off into the seats. Strike three. Got him looking on the change up. So up next for Toronto, Nathan Lucas. His first at bat was a strike out. That’s a bullet, but it goes foul. [Music] One down, base is empty. Check swing yelled up. One ball, one strike. Well, on the mound, very efficient, able to produce an outcome, it seems like, within the third or fourth pitch of just about every at bat. Next offering is in for a strike. So far, all we’ve seen in this at bat are fast balls. Look for him to slow it down right here ahead in the count. Base is empty, one away. Last half of inning number five. towards first and he handles it himself for the outdo [Music] back to the leadoff spot in the Blue Jays lineup. Boishette digs in now for two in this one. That one misses. Ball one. Ball [Music] two. And a swing and a line drive at a right field. And that ends the inning. Three up, three down for him there. Five innings complete. It’s the Blue Jays three and the A’s nothing. Back now in Toronto now. Willie Macyvery turned on, but that’s foul down the third baseline. You know, these athletics just aren’t putting together very many good at bats in this one. Just one base runner to this point, and it’s not exactly early anymore. They’ve got players in this lineup capable of sparking something, but it just hasn’t happened for him yet. Grounds one to short. Bette whips it to first. One up, one down. Now that is center fielder Denzel Clark. Here’s the center fielder Denzel Clark. And there’s one thing on his mind this at bat. Getting that first hit at the big league level. Headed towards the corner. Santandere racing after it. Tries to make the play but it’s fouled. And it’s fouled away. [Music] Hacks and misses. It’s a strike out. Oh, there’s a three pitch strikeout. He can do whatever he wants with the baseball right now. So, the lineup flips over now. Here’s the leadoff hitter for the A’s, Jacob Wilson. And that’s off the inside edge. And that’s ball one. It on the ground to short. Bette. Zips it across. The A’s go quietly. So, a new pitcher on the mound for the A’s, JP Sears. Pretty tight game, so they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Here’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr., he’s already homerred here in this one. And a pitch just off the inside edge. This guy who grew up in big league clubouses. It’s got to be a nice feeling, Sigy, when your father played in the big leagues and he passes down all that wisdom and another ball. I can only imagine the comfort level of being in the ballpark. For those kids who are fortunate enough to have a dad that played in the big leagues, them being on the baseball field, for some it’s pressure, for them, they feel that they are right at home. Do it again. Pitch misses there. And that’s ball three. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. Fouls it back with two strikes. [Music] MVP swinging and a high-fly ball in the air left field. Soderstrom makes the play and there’s one down. Now betting the center. And now the center fielder Dalton Bar. He’s 0 for one. and he takes a strike. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Mitch Spence getting loose out there. Otanz also [Music] throwing. One down. Base is empty. Fouled off left side. [Music] Foul ball. It stays nothing and [Music] two. Line drive base hit and they have their first hit since the second inning. Now that Alejandro Kirk now at the plate. First pitch just misses. ripped but a curls foul. Baro leads off first with one away. Next offering is down low. hammers that one deep left field and forget it. A massive home run, his fourth home run of the season. And they boost their lead. It’s five zip. Already playing with the lead and now they’re celebrating a home run. They’re having a great time out there. He got on plane with that high fast ball. Then look how his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Absolutely crushed that pitch. Anthony Santandere at the plate. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Owen Chu now blows the high heat past him. That’s a strike out. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fast balls in that location. Hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. Barker now at the plate as he thought about that one but held back. Swings and misses at the sweeper. really need to hang in there with that front side against this left-handed breaking ball. And it is two and one. Base is empty, two away, but two runs are in here in the bottom of the six. careful [Music] outside and that is ball four. One of the things about that two out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI and those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. Clemens in the box again takes the strike right through there for a strike. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the walls. going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. Two outs and one and two. Well, he missed badly with that O2 fast ball. Hitter has to understand probably wants to try to put him away with that pitch. So, got to stay ready for it. Now, snap throw to first. Parker dives back in safely. Pitch misses. Two and two. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. [Music] That one almost got him. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion. So something in the gap should definitely score. So now two on and two outs. You get a walk and you get a walk. Everyone gets a walk. Boo. First and second, two outs. Here’s the second baseman. Michael Stefonic. Bounce to the left side. And on Duhar whips it to first on the run. What a play. Inning over. The Jays get a pair on this homer and the lead is now 5 nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. back here at Rogers Center. Top of inning number seven. Now the A’s designated hitter, Brent Rooker. This to third and foul ball. Well, the guy’s throwing a lot of first pitch strikes as a hitter. You got to be ready to hit. Now, that’s not going to help you get deep into his pitch count and into the bullpen, but you got to take what he’s offering that day. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Yariel Rodriguez, the hardthrowing righty, is up and loosening. Little the power lefty up as well. Right side, hard hit. Steps on first for the out. Well, timing is the key to great hitting. And right now, that door is still locked. They haven’t been able to figure out pitch sequences and it’s impacting them across the board. Here’s the left fielder, Tyler Soderstrom. One for two and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Base is empty, one away here in the top half of inning number seven. That clips the corner. All right. Now, he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls, but at this point, he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone. Off the plate, one and two to count. [Music] Just misses the mark outside the zone. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. Oh, three and two. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. One down. Base is empty. Swing and a miss. and he struck him out. Zone cracks double digits with his 10th strike out. Well, that’s the effect of the splinter that you’re looking for on the mound. Really nice pitch right there and had him out in front over the top. I’m sure the batter was thinking he was getting something else. Perhaps a fast ball with a little more straight and below to it. On Duhar in the box now. No balls in a strike. Come on. That one misses. One and one. The one-1 is fouled off. Next offering upstairs. Boo. I’m not sure how he took that right there. I mean, that was an incredible two- strike pitch. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another and a three to miss. Down on strikes, but his 11th strike out in this one really racking up the whips. A’s go quickly and quietly there. It’s 5 nothing. So, a new pitcher on the mound for the A’s, Michelle Oz. And with the big deficit on the scoreboard, he almost has to just put that out of his mind. Every outing matters for relievers in their numbers, but I think it’s tough to get up for this type of appearance the same way you would for one in a close game. Lucas stands in now and watches strike one. Well, these Jays doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. The numbers say their chase rate or swings at pitches outside the zone is under 25%. And I think that’s a big reason why they’re scoring runs. by not chasing out of the zone. They’re getting good pitches to hit. When you can do that, you have a much better chance to square up the baseball and do damage like they have so far. Next pitch way upstairs, gets a piece and stays alive. Goes down looking for the strikeout. That was pretty nasty. Oh, that’s almost just not fair with that pitch. I mean, until the very last second looked like it was going to be well in off the plate, but the armside run brought it right back to catch the inside corner. Tell you what, frustrating as a hitter. You give up on the pitch. I honestly don’t know what you’re supposed to do with that as a hitter other than just tip your cap as you walk back to the dugout. Besett up to the dish. Next offering is in for a strike. That one hammered but pulled foul. misses the zone and he gets him to chase. MacGyver down to first with it out on the drop. Third strike. Two gone. Chance to strike out the side. Now you talk about the benefits, the advantages of relievers who can come in and get the swing and miss. Whether it’s inherited runners or maybe a little jam that they get into themselves knowing that they can miss the bat. Tell you what, that’s huge and can change the ball game. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Now that missed by a lot and that’s ball one. Two down, nobody on here in the bottom of the seventh. Next offering is downstairs. Two ball three. That’s ball four. Tried another fast ball but missed the spot. Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch wasn’t even much to think about. Runner of first with two away. Now here is Dalton Baro and a foul ball. It’s a tough pitch, but in terms of the best pitch you’re going to get to hit in the at bat, that fast ball was down enough where you’re going to catch up to one. That’s the one. When she elevates, guys aren’t touched it. Two outs. That one missed. Foul ball there. Look out. That ball was smoked. Man, I am so relieved that they have this netting down the line just to ensure safety for the fans. Last thing is a player you want to look up and see a fan get hit. Squirts away a little bit. Swang and the miss. The velocity blasted it right past him. One left for Toronto as they are unable to add to their five nothing lead. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Yariel Rodriguez and he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits period. Luis getting ready to hit. Highfly ball and that one curling foul down the right side. [Music] Next offering is fouled back. Pitch in the dirt and it’s two and two. [Music] Fast and he gets out of the way. Straighten him up a little bit. [Music] stays alive. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. A great back and forth in that at bat. He had to lay off some really close pitches and somehow boo, he found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there. here. I’ll tell you right now, I couldn’t have done it. And first offering is fouled off. Next offering misses down and away. Toronto’s bullpen with some action. Braden Fiser, the rookie right-hander, is getting loose. Urias gets his lead at first. Nobody out. And that’s downstairs and outside. Off man gets on. You want to minimize the threat by playing sound defense. Hopefully the pitcher can get a ball on the ground and they can roll him up for two. Pulled hard, but it’s a foul ball. swing and a ball lifted left field. Lucas makes the play and there’s one down. Now back in right fielder Lawrence Butler. Lawrence Butler the next to hit. Fast ball is outside. Man at first, one away. And there’s a foul ball. [Music] just off the inside edge. Inside just missed. The Blue Jays leading by five and we’re in the top of the eighth. strike. Three balls, two strike. That’s a good at bat right there. He was down early in that plate appearance. Works the walk. Well, this could be the start of something. They haven’t found a way to score yet, but now is their chance to change that. Willie Macyver will hit next. There’s the strike. From a pitcher’s perspective, that’s a beautiful splitter right there. As a hitter, you don’t like it. But he’s commanded his fast ball and out of that same tunnel, that splinter comes and the bottom just falls out of it. Just missed. One. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Runners at first and second with one gone. Outside low and a count now even up. The guy at the plate could recognize Slider out of the hand. Didn’t stay in the tunnel very long in terms of depth and perception. He knew right away it was an off- speed pitch. Still two and two after the foul ball. [Music] Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Now at the plate, Denzel Clark, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. [Music] Line drive Stefonic that ends the frame. A strand a couple still looking at that five nothing deficit. Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, Mitch Spence. I think it’s got to be a little tough coming in out of the pin when your guys are trailing so big on the scoreboard. Just doesn’t have the same intensity to it. But he’s got to find a way because these batters count the same for his stats obviously regardless of the score. Kirk in now takes ball one off the plate. Activity in the bullpen. Justin Sterner appears to be getting loose. Swinging a foul out of play. 1-1 now. There’s the strike. That front door slider such a devastating pitch. You don’t want to get beat by the inside fast ball. So, you cheat a little bit and then by the time it gets there, it’s out of the swing plane outside with a breaking ball. Ground ball right side and it goes just foul. popped up to the left into foul ground makes the catch and there’s one gone now batting right fielder Anthony and next for Toronto Anthony Santandere there. First pitch and he just misses. [Music] And another ball. That one pushed to the left and [Music] fouled. One down, base is empty. And that one hit to first. Davidson takes it himself. Two up, two down. Not bad. Third base Addison Barger. Two down. Base is empty. Addison Barker now at the plate. On the corner for a strike going one. That’s a real nice cutter right there. I mean, this guy can struggle with the inside pitch at times. So, I’d say that’s pretty effective if you can continue to command it on that side of the plate. There’s a 1-1. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. That one misses. Three and one. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count in the air left field down the line and that’s a foul ball [Music] on the ground and that’s just foul. called four. Tried another curve but couldn’t locate it. Pretty good pitch on 3-2 right around the knees but just no help from the umpire. So two down and now the first baseman Ernie Clement [Music] down the middle for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Swagging a ball hit out towards left center field. Full extension, makes the catch. We take another look at that great catch on this turf field. You really have to be sure because there is no forgiveness. He sacrificed. It’s going to hurt, but it was totally worth it. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Braden Fiser. And you know, bullpen guys can struggle sometimes when they’re called upon with big leads because it just doesn’t have the same intensity as a tight game. So, we’ll see how sharp he is. Your mental toughness matters in situations like this as well. Now, here’s the leadoff hitter for the A’s, Jacob Wilson. The shorts stop takes a ball. Movement in the bullpen. Brendan Little, the southpaw is throwing and getting that sinker dialed in. Hoffman, the hardthrowing right-hander up as well. Slice the other way. That’s a base hit. And the leadoff man aboard. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. Next to hit, Brent Rooker and fires in a fast ball at 95. Wilson gets his lead at first with nobody out. Out towards right center. That’s well struck and it’s into the gap. coming home now. A relay to the plate in there. He scores. It’s 5-1. Puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI. When you connect and it jumps off your bat like that, you’re thinking double at the very least. Put a great swing on it. And man, he wasn’t fooled at all. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Tyler Soderstrom up next for the A’s. One for three. First offering and it just misses. And that one a little bit high. Runner in second. Nobody out. Swing and a little roller right side and foul ball. Man at second. That one fouled off. Two and two. Just misses with that one. Evidently not too impressed with that call and it feels like he got squeezed on the outside corner. So, he’s making his case. You got to be careful to pick your spots in terms of showing your frustration with the umpire. And he felt this was his time. Swang in a line drive ripped right center field. Varo pulls that one down. Runner tags at second and he’s in safely at third with one out. Now that is third base on Miguel Anduhar getting ready to hit. 0 for three in this one. pitch misses inside and that is ball one. This is a situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended. What you have to be careful of is that pitch that’s up that’s in on your hands. That’ll pop you up in the infield and that’s exactly what the pitcher wants. Fair ball. In comes the run from third. It’s 52 to second. Pulls him off the bag. Well, that gets him a little closer in this one. Can’t handle an up and fast ball much better than that. I I think he had to be sitting on something similar because it’s very tough to adjust to a pitch like that if you’re not looking for it. Now, a huge bat in this game coming up. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Braden Fiser will depart. It’s a three-run game and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. Now, here comes the closer here in the ninth, Jeff Hoffman. And he’s had his struggles so far this year. As you can see, the inflated RA looking to bring that down a little bit right here. Luis Rias up next for the A’s. Ras started after it, tried to hold up. Now a look to first and James Kingsley says he won a round outside low and one and one go one strike [Music] and a swing and a miss. There’s that slider. One ball. Good job to fight that one off. Still only one out here in the inning. Really nice slider right there. Sweeping across the dish, but just couldn’t hang the edge. battling here as he fouls it away. Fights it off. He’ll see another. [Music] And it’s filled up. [Music] popped up. Bette in position puts it away for the out. Two-way down. [Music] The Athletics down to their last out. Next is switchhitting first baseman Logan Davidson. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. First offering misses badly for ball one. [Music] The bit behind with that swing. It’s strike one. Just amazing to me how many closers and backend relievers just throw absolute gas these days. I never would have had a chance. And he grounds one to the right side and it goes just foul. Hoffman is just one strike away and a swing and a miss. And that is the ball game. Whether you’re a season ticket holder or you just come to a couple of games a year to see your team win at home, there’s just something special about that. Good job by this team to get it done for the hometown fans. And your final score, 52 for Chris Singleton and our entire crew. I’m John Shabi saying so long. Hallelujah. Hallelujah.
