Now back to the Metro Detroit Buick GMC dealers broadcast booth from the field brought to you by Meyer, official partner of the Detroit Tigers. Good afternoon Tiger fans. This is Bobby Scales with the Tigers from the field report here in Kansas City ahead of game one of this Central Division matchup here with Kansas City Royals radio broadcaster color man ex big leaguer ex Japanese player like myself Rex Rex thanks for being on with us today Bobby oh man we got ball we got ball here in coffin man look how beautiful it is raining for weeks and now for this weekend you know nice Tiger showdown you know the Royals if they’re going to do anything and try to catch the Tigers. They’ve got to be able to put together some wins against this team. You can’t gain any ground unless you win, too. And I don’t know, the way we’re we’re hitting and the way you guys are playing, I don’t know if it’s going to work out that way, Bobby, but I’m happy to be on with you. Love your fan base. My favorite trip in all the league is to come to Detroit. This Kansas City team, not playing quite the way they did a year ago. Still exciting, still dangerous. Seth Lugo going. Talk about what you expect from him this evening. Okay, Seth, if he’s anything like he’s been, he’ll be really hard to hit. He’s got 14 pitches. Okay, I sat down with him, Bobby, just like you’re doing with me. I sat down with him and I said, “Seth, can you go over him with?” Of course, I did on TV so he could show us all of his grips. They’re legitimate. This guy’s smart. First, he’s brilliant. He went to a brainiac school down in Louisiana, wanted to be an engineer, okay? So, he’s a smart guy and he figured out all these pitches. He’s been a pitcher his whole life and finally became a starter and now he’s using all of them and he’s really good. He has the highest spin rate of a curveball of anybody in baseball. So that’s the one he likes to drop in there. Excellent change up. He’s got cutters. He’s got two seamers, three seamers, four seamers. He’s got a lot of pitches, but I can tell you that he’ll go deep into games. You know, they pitchers like him like to throw early strikes. They like to get ahead. So a lot of hitters, they’re ready. They hitting and they hit ground balls. If they’re not getting hits, they’re in trouble cuz now his pitch count is going to be good. He’ll go six, seven innings. Night game, day game, day game. Should be a fun three-game series. Better believe it, Bobby. Thanks for letting me be on with you to all those great people in Detroit. Man, what a place. That was Rex Hudler, color commentator for Royals TV. We’ll be back with more from the Detroit Tigers Radio Network. Detroit Tigers baseball brought to you by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. The boys are hot again after a tough start to the home stand against the Guardians. Came out, they’ve won their last four. And now we turn our attentions to the Royals. A big central division matchup. Tigers currently lead the Royals who sitting in fourth place in the division by seven games. So really an opportunity for the Tigers to put the Royals in a bad spot this week. Yeah, they could. There’s a long way to go, but again, don’t let the smooth taste fool you. That Royals team is still very capable. Their pitching is going to keep them in any ball game they play. They their offense has not really kickstarted at all this year. Let’s hope it stays dormant for the next three. Keys in the game brought to you by Rave and Associates by Bell’s Founders and Long Drink. Proudly distributed by Rave Associates. What are your keys to this game and the series? Yeah. Well, it starts tonight with Seth Dougal, their starter, coming back off injury. Had an injury to his middle finger. That seems to be mended up. He’s a horse. He’s going to take the ball and throw as many pitches as he needs to to get done what he needs to get done. Here’s the thing. the Tigers. He’s going to stay all around the zone with all of his pitches. His sha the his shadow percentage, that’s pitches that are just on the edge or one inch off the plate are higher as high as anybody in the league. That’s how he pitches. He changes speeds. He stays on the edges. He’s not perfect. He’s going to come in that strike zone. And when he does, the Tiger lineup has to be ready for him. You’re going to get limited opportunities. He’s not going to not going to live in the middle of the plate. Doesn’t have the stuff. But when he comes in there, because it’s a mistake by him, you got to line him up. And the pitching match up is brought to you by your local Toyota dealers. For all the latest offers, go to toyota.com. On the flip side, second start since coming off the injured list is Tiger right-hander Casey Mai. Mai took a no decision in his first start back. It’s a place where he has struggled over the years, but it was a different Casey Mai in years past. And he’s already beaten the Royals this season. His best start in his career by far against Kansas City back in April. He takes the mound tonight for the Tigers. Well, they say elite athletes sometimes have to have short memories. And yeah, he struggled against this Royals club in the past, but his last outing was one that you want to remember. He’s going to take that good feeling. He threw the ball well last time out against Cleveland. Take that good feeling he’s had previously against this team and go to work. Want some starting lineups, Mr. Scales? You got it. Thank you, partner. What up though, Detroit Tiger fan? Your starting line is brought to you by Kame. Only one bank’s been committed to Michigan since 1849. That’s Comica. We’ll start first with your visiting Detroit Tigers. Leading off and playing right field is Carrie Carpenter. Labor Torres will bat second and play second. He’ll play center field. Zack McKinsky is at third base batting seventh. Batting eighth is your back stop Dylan Dingler. Batting ninth is the shortstop Trey Sweeney. For the home standing Kansas City Royals, they’ll go display leading off and playing second. basis Jonathan India. Bobby Whit Jr. will play shortstop and bat second. Vinnie Pascantino is at first base batting third. The veteran Salvador Perez is behind the plate hitting fourth. Mikel Garcia is over at third base in the five spot. Drew Waters is out in left field. He’ll hit sixth. John Ray is in right field. He’ll bat seventh. Michael Massie is the DH this evening. He’ll bat eighth. And Kyle Isel is out in center field batting ninth. And game time weather is brought to you by Clean Express Auto Wash. the official car wash of the Detroit Tigers. Fast, easy, clean, and free vacuums. We’ve got 76Β°, clear skies, a slight breeze blowing out to right field. A pretty packed ballpark right now at Kaufman Stadium. This should be a fun one. Big weekend series and good weather to boot. The first pitch of the game is brought to you by McLaren Health, the official health care system of the Detroit Tigers. And the first inning is presented by Rocket Mortgage. Own the dream. said blue goal face Carrie Carpenter, Glabber Torres, and Colt Keith here in the Tiger first inning. Tigers coming off of a sweep of the San Francisco Giants earlier in the week. Nice off day yesterday. And I do like how AJ Hinch was able to get some of his regulars two days off by not playing them on Wednesday, so using that off day to his full advantage. Carrie comes in. He had a one for four day on Wednesday. Seth Lugo his first start since returning from the injured list. The first pitch of tonight’s game. And Carpenter swings, sends this one over to third. Mike Kel Garcia has got it. He flips on to first. Carpenters retired on one pitch and there’s one gone in the first. That’s the four seam fast from Seth Lugo. That’s just part of his arsenal. Buckle up. Get your notebook out cuz here we go. Four seam fast, curve ball, sinking two seam sinking fastball, cutter, slur, slider, change up, split, and a sweeper. First pitch to Clay Torres. His popped up foul third base side miss and one count. He’s got like 55 different pitches that he throws. You know, as a hitter, you just have to go up there and say, “Okay, I’m keying in on these four to five.” Maybe not even that many. You can’t even really key on that that many. You really got to key in on zone. Oh, one is a fast ball that misses up, evening the count on Torres at a ball and a strike. And the reality of the situation is we just rattled off. I believe that’s seriously nine pitches. But the forcing fast ball, the curve ball, the slider, the sinker, and the cutter are the ones he’s really going to go with. Torres fouls one back to the screen and he’s in a hole at a ball in two strikes. It’s right-handed hitters. It’s mainly going to be two seam slider forcing and he’ll add and subtract from that slider. So that’s a lot of times you think it’s that sweeper. It’s just a version of that slider. One, two, Torres takes upstairs. Two balls and two strikes. The umpires today, Bruce Dreman’s at third. Her chief Mark Wgner’s at second. Nate Tomlinson at first and Shane Livvenfer calls the balls and strikes as player Claver Torres calls for tie. No score just underway. Top of the first inning, opening game of a three-game series between the Tigers and the Royals. Lucco working first base of the rubber and into the windup. Deals on the 2-2 and this one’s fouled back our way. Well, partner, you warned me. We are prime. We are in it. This is prime territory right here, partner. So between Bobby and I, we have one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Nine screens in this boot as Lugo deals on the 2-2. It’s a swinging strike three Torres down on strikes. Two gone in the Tiger first for Colt Keith. That’s what he does to you. He speeds you up. He slows you down. We talk about quite a bit pitching in three dimensions. is using north and south in the strike zone, east and west in the strike zone. But the one that doesn’t get used as much in today’s game because of all the power is front to back. And the way you do that is speeding guys up. Speeding guys up. Boom. Slow them down. And then just playing with the timing. Cold Keith little half swing. It’s called strike at the top of the zone. It’s 0 and one. I asked AJ Hinch earlier today just about Seth Lugo and the pace that he works with on the mount. Not only does he have a big arsenal, the 01 misses away with the curve that time go in the counts up, but he pitches with such pace and we saw that this past Wednesday against the Giants with Landon RP and yeah, this is two straight starters as Keith finds this one up the middle and a base hit into center field and Colts on a six-game hitting streak. Yeah, good swing there by Colt Keith. We talked about when he comes in zones, he’s going to stay around the edges. When he comes in there with something you can handle, you better lay wood to it. Colt Keith got a sinker right in the middle of the plate and he whacked it through the middle for a base hit. Good swing from Colt. I asked AJ about that, what the approach is. And you know, it’s all about disrupting that pitcher’s rhythm when they have such a good rhythm when they’re sometimes. I mean, we saw Rub on Wednesday. He was throwing pitches with 12 seconds left on the pitch clock. And it’s all about how you use your timeouts and when to step out and when to know to call that time. First pitcher Riley Green is swatted out to deep right field. Brave going back, looking up and that ball is crushed and gone. Touch of all time. Riley Green. That’s number 13 on the year. It comes with two out here in the top of the first inning. And the Tigers take a two nothing lead on the Royals. Yeah, it’s a cutter middle. Middle middle, partner. We told you you can’t miss when he comes in the middle of that strike zone. Riley Green just annihilated a cut cutter over the bullpen in right field. That’s a long way in any ballpark, but in this one as well. I mean, that cleared the Royals bullpen and about halfway up the seats beyond that bull. Two down and Spencer Torlson will bat. Torqulson did not play on Wednesday. It’s two nothing Tigers as Torque picks strike at that last home run. Brought to you by Little Caesars. Order online for delivery or pizza portal pickup. So, a thunderous blow by Riley Green. It was set up by the two out single up the middle by Gold Keith. The Tigers with a two nothing advantage as Torque lines this one to second. Jonathan India will squeeze it and the side is retired. Good start for the Tigers. Two-run home run from Riley Green. We head to the bottom of the first. A wave and a miss on a slider away and he’s ahead of India. Had a ball in two strikes. a couple different versions of that slider. He’s got that really short bullet slider. This kind of one he throws for strikes is more cutter-ish than anything else. That big slerve has some sweep and some depth to it. And he’s got a more conventional slider that he’ll throw strike the ball. A one two from my fast ball inside. Count goes even two balls, two strikes. Key with Casey though is got to throw that force seam not both up in the zone but down to make that split more effective. Occasionally he’s got to run it into right-handed hitter. Two-2. India swings, pieces a foul on the third base side. And there was that splitter right there and dotted the inside corner of the plate with it. All India did was foul it away. It’s a two to one ball game. Yeah, just a slur. One of those sliders he throws. He got in the middle of the plate. Bobby Whit was waiting on him. This lineup, it they can be poke, they can be dangerous. They haven’t been collectively all year, but this guy number seven in blue, he’s dangerous all the time. As Patino reaches out, looks at right field for a clean single. That’ll bring up the veteran Salvador Perez. A bit of a down year at the plate. Such a dangerous hitter. He’s been doing it for so long. Kansas City first pitch. Just foul back our way. Heads up, partner. Right above us. We are We are in. We are in. And he’s the one that you caught last year. He is. I need to pay more attention. I was writing a note in my book. You got to be on your toes here in Kansas City, folks. 01 from Mai. This one lined up the line and right in foul and it’s nothing and two. Maybe maybe Salvador Perez has something against you. I don’t know. We’ve never met. I mean, I think I played against when he was like 18 or 19 in AAA when I was the old guy in AAA. It’s a no ball two strike count. Infield looks for two as Mai settles in, kicks and fires. That one in the dirt. Blocked by Dylan Dingler kept it in front. Keith Pascantino at first. Tigers in the field today. Riley Greens in left. Wel Perez at center. Carrie Carpenters in right. Hasworth makes the catch. Two down. A good pitch that time by Mai on a sinker that darted in towards Salvador Perez. And he had to fight that one off. Flies out. Yeah, he did. Got it in there. And that’s good. That’s what Casey needs to do. Whether it’s the sinker or the force, he’s got to go in there with that fast ball. One for effect like he did got the out weak contact with Sal Perez, but also two to set up anything he wants to do away the right-handed hitter. Two down. Mike El Garcia having a tremendous year. He’s on a 13-game hitting streak and he’ll take a slider down and away from ball one. Tigers two Royals one here in the bottom of the first inning. Runner on first is Vinnie Pasantino. High settles in above belt deals on the 10. Strike evens the count up. One of the things that you had remarked every time we saw Casey last season was establishing that inside part of the play. It sets up so much against these right-handed hitters and he’s been doing a lot more of that this season and the results have been there. This one is swung on grounded deep in the hole and through the left side. A big hit. Garcia will extend his hitting streak. Just stuck the bat out. Hooked that sler splitting McKinstry and Sweeney. Yeah, just a slur that again it was up a little bit. Casey’s got hurt on some pitches that were up in the zone. That’s no different. This time just gets it through the 56 hole on the left side of the diamond. Another base hit this boil off. A homer and two singles for Kansas City here in the first. And Mai deals with Drew Waters. McKinstry looks at it. It’s a cold strike and it’s three and one. Yeah, with Lugo, when you get plus counts, you really have to shrink your zone because he’s still going to pick. He’s not going to give in. Doesn’t walk, guys, but he’s not going to give in and throw it right down the middle. Three balls in a strike on McKinstry. Ludo delivers this one hit in the air to left sending the left fielder through waters back. Settles Hunter takes the catch and there’s one away Lugo he’s always been known as a bit of a nibbler. Yeah. But it’s a nibbler that is effective. Very much so. And like I said, he’s he he is unafraid to throw all of these pitches at any time and any count to either side of the plate to either handed hitter. His unpredictability is is why he has lasted this long and been as effective as he’s been in the major league. Perez off first, one out here in the second. Tigers lead it two to one. Lugo deals to Dylan Dingler who cracks one deep to left going back. That ball is crushed and gone. Touch of all time. Dylan Dingler number five. He was hunting fast ball on the first pitch. All four Tigers runs coming on homers. They’ve quieted this Coffin Stadium crowd early. The L1 on Sweeney is up and the count goes even at a ball in a strike. Lugo’s the type of pitcher that will give you length every time he takes them out. Interesting to see how Matt Caparo plays this today given that it’s his first outing off the entrance as there’s Paul Strike on Sweeney. Takes it one and two. Yeah, I mean he he’s kind of a throwback. I mean he’ll go 115 120 pitches. I’m not sure he’s going to do that coming back like you said first start off the injured list. Obviously the performance is going to dictate some of that too. He’s already given up four tonight after an inning and a third. A one-two pitch get in the air fing. This is a guy that has had success in his career against the Tigers. Three and one record at 278 RA in five career starts against Detroit. His first loss against the Tigers was back on April 19th. He was out dooled by Casey Mines. Hangs this one, but it’s fouled up the line into the netting down the right field line by Sweeney. It’s one and two. It’s interesting how that works. See another uniform for whatever reason. Just have a level of confidence. One, two, it off the mound. Waiting back behind second is Bobby Whit Jr. He will blub it on to first. That’s out number two. Hit it on the screws, but still the wrong spot. When you have Bobby Whit Jr. out there, he plays that carum off the mound just beautifully. He does most things beautifully, especially Adam to his left where there was once an Achilles heel in his game was to his backhand side. Look at the numbers. He sealed that up and he’s unbelievable defensive shortstop. Here’s Carrie Carpenter. Four to one Tigers in the second. Carrie takes up and away and that’s ball one early on in his career and he’s on the way up. Triple A. The question was, was he going to be able to stay at shortstop? You move him to third base. Yeah, he answered those pretty well. Lugo with the 10. Carpenter takes it upstairs on a slider and checked the swing. Didn’t go. Almost pulled the trigger on that pitch. Two and0. Go and deal. Harper puts this one on the ground up the line at first. Diving play by Pascino, but it’s foul. Talk about premier defender. Vinnie Pascantino is definitely one of those. He is a good defender at first base. Very smooth around the bag. Does such a nice job on some of the balls in the dirt you see come across the diamond. He’s talked about it before. You’re an infielder and you know you make a play, you just get rid of it. Your guys going to either stretch it, take it out of the dirt, or come off and just save save you an error. That gives you an immense amount of confidence to to freedom to make plays and maybe throw balls that you may not throw to first base first base go there. Aspeno is very good at that. Two-1 pitch.
