#DallasCowboys Fish at 6: ‘Bazooka’ Joe Milton Makes His Move Up Dak Prescott’s Depth Chart!

[Music] Joe Milton makes his move. I’m Mike Fischer, your trusty and trusted reporter. There’s six bongs on the wall. TGIF, thank God it’s fish. And Friday, a notable note from our observation in Cowboys OTAA’s practice this week. And we we we’re going to allow ourselves to be excited about this in part because we have to allow ourselves to go, hm, what if I’m wrong? That’s a beard scratcher. And what we’re talking about is Joe Milton. The Cowboys, of course, uh acquire him for nothing from New England. the Patriots uh kind of give up on him in part because he was sort of psychologically maybe standing in the way of Drake May’s uh development. They don’t they didn’t want to spend time on two of them. They didn’t want to have a quarterback competition. Maybe there never would have been such a thing, but they give him away and the Cowboys gladly take him. Not as a replacement for Dak Prescott as so many think. Not to put pressure on Dak Prescott. It ain’t that. What I said over the course of uh time since the trade and up until Thursday was this is very much a developmental experiment and right now he’s the third quarterback. Well, maybe that was true on Wednesday and then by the way they have another workout on a Friday and the media doesn’t get to see it. So, we don’t know how the snaps were distributed on Wednesday or Friday. We just know how they were distributed on Thursday. Cowboys made their noise with the Milton deal. And if again, if you if you understood it at the time, you you you kept it in your pants. You know what I mean? They were moving on from Cooper Rush. They were moving on from Trey Lance. They obviously think Joe Milton is more of a prospect now than Tre Lance, but he did not become the immediate second stringer. Trav, how many years on Milton contracts? Four-year deal. Six round pick, four-year deal. So, he’s here for 25, 26, and 27. Plenty of time to find out more. And yeah, you don’t have to remind I uh some of you are reminding me. Fish, you said you were searching. I I just said that. So, thanks for what is there an echo in here. I said as of Thursday he was a third As of Wednesday he was a third string quarterback. And then I watched practice and there was Dak doing all those things. What there wasn’t working with the second team. What there wasn’t was Will Greer. And yes, DK, in terms of athleticism, Will Greer, with all due respect, Joe Milton’s from another planet compared to him. He’s got his bazooka-like arm. He’s 66 and 234. He can He’s fast. He can run. He can jump. Uh he can throw a piece of fruit 85 yards. Pick your fruit, sugar, orange, banana, kumquat. He can sling it. And and can throw a football, too. And he had a pretty good day throwing the football to my amateurish judgment. Quarterback position. Hot topic obviously as always, especially hot in Shotti’s pre-practice media session in which he was asked about Joe Milton as a developmental guy. And his response is, well, yeah, you know, we’re all developmental guys. I mean, all the quarterbacks are developing. We’re all trying to get better. We’re all trying to tweak and get better. He says, ‘You know, if you’re a quarterback or anybody else, if you’re if you’re not trying to get better, you might as well quit. And of course, that comment got completely misconstrued as you knew it would. And the national media now, the nationals and the casuals are now thinking that Shottenheimr saying Dak’s developmental. He meant that Joe is developmental, but that we’re all working on it. We’re all working on ourselves. So, I’m going to repeat one more time. And William Jenkins, yes. Is Shotti developmental? Of course he is. It’s the first time he’s ever been a head coach. He’s developmental, too. And his point is Bill Bich should be developmental as well. 10 million times I’ve told you Joe Milton is the third stringer up until I saw the difference. See, that’s the beauty of it. So, a couple of you were sniping at us. The beauty of what the Cowboys allow me to do is I get to go watch. We worked with the second team. He’s not the second. He’s not the third stringer on Thursday. Might be today. Might be next Tuesday, but he wasn’t on Thursday. So, in a sense, Joe Milton has done enough to make his move. Now, they’re working on all kinds of tinkering things, all kinds of developmental things. They’re getting rid of the cadence, the DAC cadence. It seems to me, and Shotti talked a little bit about this, yes, all the all the quarterbacks need to have a similar cadence. the the rhythm needs to be the same. I don’t know why it needs to be a slogan. I I not sure not sure I understand that. Lee Walker is Milton the replacement for Lance. That was the original plan. Mark my words. Circle it. Use gold sharp yellow Sharpie. The original idea was let’s get him in here and hand him a football and then he’s done enough things. He wasn’t Listen, I was at practice last week too. He wasn’t second string last week. So something at least for a day at least for a day changed. Alan Wright looks like Milton has his eyes on starting quarterback. Wonk won. Everybody’s a comedian tonight. I’m trying to be a serious journalist. But yes, if you want to make your jokes, third string, first string, I’m just I’m telling you, for one day, he was second string. Uh Dak Prescott, by the way, moved around nicely. Uh a lot of people last time I said this were saying Dak’s not he’s a he’s a pocket passer, is he? And is that good enough? Matthew Stafford’s a pocket passer. Can’t do the other thing. Really good at that. Matthew Stafford. Huh? Highland Park. Highland Parks. Matthew Stafford. Marshall went to high school with him. Correct. Couple years apart. Just a few. Joel Milton also saying all the right things. He said, “The three of us, we have three different games. Dak brings the most experience to the room. Will, he’s been around football his whole life. And then he says, “And then you got me. I bring extra tools and I’m learning along the way.” Oh, he’s saying all the right things. So, put it all together. We just shape one great quarterback. Of course, that’s they don’t allow that. They don’t allow three guys to all. That’s just that’s just in the movies. That’s in the superhero movies. We feed off each other. They help me out a lot. Shout out to those two guys. Respect for sure. So Milton is doing and saying the right things. And what you want, see, you’re not the only one that wants Puka Joe to be the number two quarterback. Some of you want him to be the number one quarterback. Whatever. The 75,000 fish heads in Cowboy Nation, you are right in wanting him to be number two. If he’s good enough to be number two, then he’s way better than Will Greer because Will Greer is a placeholder. He’s a doors stop and and lots of backup quarterbacks in the NFL are that and that’s okay. What if this guy is more than that? Well, that’s exciting. And furthermore, if you think it excites you, think of the organization. Boy, they want to be right. And every most teams are in the same boat. You want this trade to work. You want this draft pick to work, but quarterback’s a big deal. What if you gave up peanuts so you get a a real threat and also a competent number two quarterback for the next three years? Richard L. Where’d he come from? Where’d he go? Where’d he come from? Bazooka arm Joe. I was just going to say where’s the cotton joke? Oh darn. I didn’t I had no idea what you were talking about. [Music] Now I get it. So, it’s collaborative with those three guys and with Shotti and the coaching staff, too. Trying to get them all ready, trying to get them all developed. Now, uh, John Macho of The Athletic wrote a really cool thing on how Joe prepares. And of course, he watches film and he does, but rather than move guys around on a chalkboard, him and his girlfriend, he and his girlfriend take tape, masking tape, and poker chips. What? Well, first of all, that sounds like a hell of a night. Sugar, let’s get a bottle of wine, some masking tape, and some poker chips. And that’s what I call date night. Bring the masking tape. You’re going to need two rolls of masking tape, please. That’s all I’ll say about that. Date. Yeah, it’s Yeah, it could be date night, but you show up with masking tape and a bottle of wine and that’s date line. Watch out for Keith Morrison to roll into your town. Uh, and they he writes the skill positions on the poker chips, wide receiver, you know, X, Y, where, and then he he’s he learns his playbook, not just off the chalkboard. He moves around the poker chips with the and the tape. All right, whatever works. And you get to do it with your girlfriend. It beats video games. That’s all I can say. So, he’s an interesting cat. There is no indication here that what the one source in New England said basically he’s a bad guy. See the George Pickins thing is different. We have evidence of George Pickins in Pittsburgh. I think it happened seven times last year. It might have happened seven times where he got in some sort of onfield trouble. It’s because he lo lost control. That’s fact. We all watched it. Showing up late in the locker room um before the Kansas City game. That’s factual. I love what Russell Wilson said, by the way. Russell Wilson, who a lot of people think is a cornball. I’ve always thought Russell Wilson I’ve always thought it took took balls to do what to do Russell Wilson the way he does it because he is not one of the fellas that way that way that the fellas who criticize him and call him a cornball brother is what they call him call him a cornball brother. Can you say that on national television? I always thought it took guts for Russell Wilson to go his way and not try to fit in. That’s the realist. So now criticizing George Pickkins is a is like a national pastime. Steelers people of course they’re all whisper it and and nobody I don’t see anybody saying it on the record. Steelers people all whispering to Steelers reporters are yeah you know he was kind he didn’t return my phone call that I texted him and he never texted me back. Put your name on it guys or skip it. Russell Wilson’s putting his name on it and instead of going along with the fellas, which would be easy thing to do, wouldn’t it be Russell Wilson now quarterback of the Giants? You’ll see him twice this year unless he gets beat out by Jackson Dart at some point. He goes on record saying he’s a heck of a guy. He’s an incredible player. He says, “You throw the ball anywhere within his wingspan, he catches it.” And he is really good at that. And then he says, “No, I a terrific guy. No issues with me.” Why didn’t Russell Wilson go along with the stream? Why did he tell his truth? Because it’s his truth. We should value that. The difference between George Pickkins and Joe Milton is we’ve got an army of evidence. We we’ve got an army of people whispering it and we do have a mountain of evidence saying I mean Mike Tomlin said it. He goes he needs to grow up. He’s said it to the media in front of God and everybody. How about pickings Milton? This is just one guy who serves as a source, creates a rumor, and there’s never been anybody else to say the same thing. Never. So, cut George Pickin some slack. Sure. Let’s watch and see what happens. Cut Joe Milton some slack as a person. Why not? He’s never done anything wrong except want to compete for that job. If the Cowboy what I said a week ago is what I said Wednesday is if the Cowboys had a game today and Dak would would say I’ll play and hopefully the medical team would say no you won’t. What I said last on Wednesday was Will Greer would be the starting quarterback that game. today. Not so sure. And if there’s a competition, if if Joe Milton is pushing his way up the depth chart to the point where now he’s as good as Will Greer, that’s progress, man. And don’t worry too much about him pushing his way up the next level. It’s Dak Prescott’s depth chart, but Joe Milton is trying to climb his way up there. Keito, I think I might go to Oxnard just to see Milton now. Well, you can come see me. Uh, it’s booked. We’re going. So, we’ll see you in Oxnard. We’ll also see you inside the Star again next week. One more time. And then, um, the voluntary OTAAS move to mandatory. Boom, boom, boom. June 10, 11, 12. and we’ll be there for the entirety of that. Cowboyscountry.com. I uh appreciate very much that you hang out there. Let me whip through some of your questions. Can we Tra, can Milton be better than Rush? He’s uh a different level of athlete by far than Cooper Rush. Um Cooper Rush not drafted, cut every year. future. He’s gonna be he’s gonna be a coach in this league if he wants to be quarterback, coach, offensive coordinator. He’s he’s going to be that. Um, but athletically, they’re not even on the same planet. That’s fair. Uh, West Texas, bring in Gilly. Not until they need him, assuming he’s still available. They don’t, in their view, they don’t need him today. Uh, a couple people suggesting, can you can you have a role for Joe Milton in a game? Not not because Dak’s getting benched, but can Joe Milton do some other things? Interesting. Remember now, if you’re going to play Joe Milton in a game, let’s say he’s going to run a quarterback snake or something, he’s got to be the number two quarterback. Josh, why can’t Pickkins be our Barkley? If you mean, can he be the the final piece? If you make the playoffs, if the Cowboys make the playoffs this year, we may look at George Pickins as that. Kenneth Easley Fish, I hope the trend with Pickins doesn’t continue with all the other receivers that Tom got rid of. And of course, we’ve got Antonio Brown and and this host of guys that went south, but remember the Steelers and Tomlin picked those guys. if if you didn’t they I mean they scouted George Pickkins and quote picked him anyway. Um Antonio Brown that was their guy. By the way, Antonio Brown, I believe made all pro five times. So maybe it wasn’t all bad then. Uh Stewart was Dak better than Russell last year. Dak Pres got eight games, eight interceptions. So you would like to, if you’re him, you’d like to just put that off your resume. Can we just can we just skip that year and and go back to 2023 when I was the second most valuable player in the league? For real. Second most valuable player in the league. Kurt S. Pickins was Wilson’s best option. Best. He’s his only. They have big clunky tight ends and they had a grinded out philosophy running be largely because that’s what Arthur Smith likes. I I doesn’t I don’t find it very appealing. But Arthur Smith trying to turn back the clock, make it 1962 on offense, by the way. Um that’s one of the reasons that the Falcons offense never exploded as we’ve talked about a little bit this week because Archer Smith Arthur Smith was the head coach. I appreciate you guys talking hockey. Um, I guess that’s the end of that in Dallas. Dirty. I don’t think people realize how much George is going to open up the running game. Oh, I think they do realize it. I’m going to I’m going to make this um comment and and I want to make sure it’s not taken wrongly towards CD Lamb. If this works, you have two CD Lambs. How do you defend that? Brandon Cooks came here and said, “Man, you know, we’re they’re going to have a pick their poison. How are they?” Remember when Brandon Cooks, they got CD Lamb and Brandon Cooks? Brandon, no. No, they didn’t have to pick their poison and suffer for it. They picked their poison. They chose to try to contain CD Lamb. you you weren’t that kind of guy. George Pickkins can be that kind of guy. Football, Dak got his chance because of injury. Unless Dak gets hurt, Milton isn’t coming where anywhere near his jaw. That’s a very reasonable position and I share that. Of course, I’m the idiot that said he was third string, too. Cowboyscountry.com. We’ll see you over there right now. What? Sugar? Tik Tok. Huh? Tik Tok. Oh, and then Marcia reminds us I’m on Tik Tok and it’s working. I’ve been on TikTok for like a minute and we have I think 600 of you have come over there. So, uh let’s get it to a thousand and then I’ll really start telling people let’s get to a million. So, uh it it works for me. I think it’s fun. I hope it works for you. I know many of you are like tick tock, I’m too old for that. Or tick tock, what about China? So, if you don’t want to do it, don’t do it. But, uh in a minute, we’re gonna have about 10,000 of us over there. I’m too old for that. Tik Tok. Plus, what about China? So, uh, come see us at fishportscowboys at Tik Tok. But the most important thing of all, the hub of the wheel, the thing that keeps the light bill paid. Cowboyscountry.com. Dig it. Fish out. China.

  1. Competition brings out the best! Dak took Romos starting spot. Stop acting like this is impossible.
Dak is at his last breath as the Starter. 10 years is a full resume. You Are What You Are. Let’s see IF Dak feels threatened enough or uncomfortable enough.

Fish saying haha Why? Why wouldn’t Any Player push to Start! We seen Dak.
Ha ha pushing Dak? Remove the contract. Dak is a great regular season qb.
10 years in……. Surrounded by elite talent? Hey let’s see!

  2. If our coach was smart he would know that you can't have silly takes on your star franchise qb who happens to be the most hated qb in history.

I personally loved the "here we go" funny when they started using it more they was undefeated at home. Which also had Aaron Rodgers and joe Burrow compliment Dak on his cadence and Oline control

  3. How can here we go not be the same for all of the qbs lol Shotty is just getting rid of anything associated with big Mike lol that cadence was hot I hope it's not changed but I get what Shotty is doing

  4. IfJoe is a developmental player at this point he should be number 3 and don't rush things with him and let's not forget this is the underwear Olympics don't get too excited over ota's

  5. Seems to me, an exercise of player rotation with all the positions, not just QB, will make the coaches involved more knowledgeable about what they have. Thank You Mr. Fisher for all that You do…

  6. Lance wasn’t bought in to be third string (he ended up there cause he was just bad), and neither was Joe. Grier is a journeyman who still might not even make the team when other teams have cuts. For now, it’s Dak 1, Joe 2.

  7. Fish, using your argument-

If Milton is the second string qb because he was second string yesterday…

Then Dak is the 20th best qb in football, because he was the last time he left the field.

Oh… and unsourced reporting is made up reporting.

  8. Get it through yalls heads nobody cares what Dak is what Dak does we already know that he fails mainly!! Do we’re more interested in Milton because he’s twice the athlete as duck!

  9. Heavy artillery only works when it hits its target.Finess may be something Joe will never master, but of he does he will be awesome.Even without extreme touch he can be a force and exciting to see play.

  10. And let us not forget, a competent #2 QB for the next 3 years: but one who is virtually guaranteed to start at least 10 games over that period, as Dak continues to age and have nagging injuries.

  11. Get it through yalls heads nobody cares what Dak is what Dak does we already know that he fails mainly!! Do we’re more interested in Milton because he’s twice the athlete as duck! lol playoffs. Dak isnt making no playoffs

  12. That’s a lie Dak has never been the 2nd most valuable nothing. Because ppl felt sorry for him and he got a few votes. It was t even close but everyone hangs onto the finished 2nd place. lol. Having 2 number 1 receivers means nothing when you have a joke of a QB to get the ball to them. Smh

  13. I like Fish but his thoughts on WG are ON DOPE and FULL OF BS. He has played in 2 games with 4 Int. 1 Fumble and 0 TDs. JM already has more TDs (1) with 0 turnovers. WG is a training camp arm.
