Nationals vs. D-backs Game Highlights (5/30/25) | MLB Highlights
The Nationals are now nine and four in their last 13 games. The Diamondbacks, however, have dropped seven of their last eight, and we’ll see if Jake Irvin and company can keep them down. The Diamondbacks, they’re looking for any sort of momentum. Maybe they can find it in their starting pitching with Mel Kelly. The off day couldn’t have come at a better time for this group. And for Mel Kelly really needs no rest. He’s got experience. He’s got poise on the mound. Now, the last time the Nets saw Mel Kelly was over two years ago. The Nationals have never beaten this 36-year-old right-hander. A struggle here for CJ Abrams coming into play today. You’re hoping that he does not turn it around in the desert. There’s a ground ball hit to the right side going to his left as Marte looks at the baseball as it goes into his glove. Picks it out of his glove and throws the first for the out one away. So, the batter is James Wood. He’s hit in five straight games. An extra base and an RBI in each one. Swing and a miss. He got him. Strike out number one for Kelly and there’s two outs in the inning. Now the batter is Nathaniel Lowe. There’s a ball drilled up the middle. So Nathaniel Low trending well. Eight of nine ball games sitting safely now. Here’s Luis Garcia Jr. in the cleanup spot. Up the middle. Now the ball got away and now we got a runner safe. What happened there? Looked like a pretty easy connection there for the final out and E4. Yeah, I mean that that’s about as routine a play as you can possibly get. A little quick flip to Catel who just didn’t look the ball into his glove that time. Should have been an easy out at second. Instead, the inning continues. More than a handful of extra pitches for Kelly because of that miscue. And now Low and Garcia get two out head starts. So the bases are loaded as the Nationals try and take advantage of the two out error by the Diamondbacks. Bell takes the walk and the rookie Robert Hassel III will come up. I hate to see this kind of an inning go for a pitcher. Yeah, early on. Let’s see if you can just get a ground ball here. Get out of this inning. That ball is drilled up the middle. Low comes home. Here comes Garcia. And now Hassel and the Nets have made the Dbacks pay big time for that two out error. Nationals sent seven men to the plate in the top of the first inning and they score two runs on two hits with a walk and a huge Arizona error. Nationals with the early two nothing lead. Corbin Carroll going to lead it off for the Dbacks and he’s going against the 28-year-old Jake Urban in nice little lob wedge down the left field line and there’s the speed and there’s the extra base hit the lead off double walked him outside ball for there’s two on now and nobody out for Purdomo kind of hand a baton off and see what Purdomo can do. Well, only Suarez has more RBI’s than Purdomo in tonight’s starting lineup. Suarez has 41. Purdomo has 39. Oh, it’s through. That’s going to bring home one. And Carol, it’s now bobbled and that allows Purdomo to take two. Two to one. RBI single by Purdomo who took second. Boy, really hit that ball hard. About 105 miles an hour off the bat. Screamed it right by Garcia. Here now is Naylor. Tying run, scoring here on the chopper to second by Naylor. Coming in is Marte. Suarez, the team leader in RBI’s. And there’s a little floater to right. That’s a base hit. Out the bat of Suarez and in to score is Perdomo. Here we go again for the Dbacks. They find themselves with a first inning lead. Passing your seat belts. It looks like it’s going to be one of those games. And the Diamondbacks aren’t really busting the ball anywhere, but uh they’re finding places to hit it. Nobody’s there. Yeah, they are really trying to build a big crooked number here and set a tone for this series. Took Merl over 30 pitches to get through the top of the first inning. It’s going to cost Irvin minimum of 20 pitches. Pave hitting .284. Four homers, a dozen runs batted in. There’s a rip into right center. That’s going to bring home Suarez. And what a good look in first inning this is turning out to be for the Diamondbacks. 4-2 Dbacks. Third inning in Phoenix. James Wood leading off. Oh, that ball is hammered to left center. Big ballpark. Doesn’t matter. See you later. 4-3 ball game. Number 16, James Wood with another one. Just an absolute rocket. 107 off the bat. 978 slugging percentage in the opposite field. That will obviously go up with that blast to left center. Merryill’s in trouble now. Two on. A run in and nobody out. Josh Bell is next. Swing. A high high drive deep right center field. Look out in the swimming pool. Way back it goes. And it clears the swimming pool up onto the concourse. Josh Bell put that one into orbit and the Nationals lead it six to four. He’s homerred three straight games. That’s number nine on the season for Bell. 64 now Washington on top. So Naylor with a single and the Diamondbacks one-on-one out for Aueno Suarez. And that just stays fair. Down the line it goes. And that’s going to be extra bases. Here come the answer backs. All right, here is Lordis Guriel second and third. And that is falling fast. Down it goes. That’s a base hit. Naylor scores. One hops throw the tag in time for the out. Throw to second and safe there. Hassel guns down the tying run at the plate. They nearly get a double play. Hey Sues to go home and a nice job by Robert Hassel the third. Great throw. Great job by Riley. Gave him the plate. Lane’s there. A runner ends up in scoring position. So here’s Pav Smith. Breaking ball line to left center. That’s going to get down and we are tied at six. This is a game the hitting coaches will love and the pitching coaches they want to go home. Well, each pitcher had a one, two, three in the second inning and each has been knocked around in the odd innings so far. In the air to right pretty deep. Lyall going back at the track and he makes the catch. A spectacular catch by Dalon Lyall. He robs Moreno to keep the game tied. Jake Irvin signals touchdown. He needed a big play and he got one from Dalon Lyall. Bullpens are getting busy both down the left field line and the right field line. Ball drilled up the middle and Abrams to his left. That thing looked like it had another gear and he still got it. It’s not going well at the plate. You can do something to win a game and he’s doing that often in the field right now. Back here for the six and a new pitcher for the Diamondbacks. It is rookie right-hander Juan Mario. So, Kelly out of there after five. Gave up six hits, six runs. So, Juan Morio has walked the bases loaded here in the top of the sixth inning. Nationals looking for the big big hit. We’ll see what Nathaniel Low can do here in the sixth with Mario walking three batters. Pressure’s on him now, isn’t it? Swinging a broken back, ground ball, base hit through the hole into right field. Scoring is Tana Abrams coming home. The throw to third is cut off and Wood’s going to be tagged out, but Abrams does score. So, two runs cross on the broken bat single to right for low. The Nationals lead 86. So, Bill has retired, but he moved the man up. And there’s Hassel. So, important to add on when you get these opportunities. The late innings have arrived. And here we go with Hassel who’s already driven in two. Hassel line drive base hit pass the drawn in diving first baseman Naylor. 96 Nationals. Hassel his third RBI of the night. Now, it just feels like the Diamondbacks they got to get something out of this. They had a chance with Moreno at second. They couldn’t bring him home. That was back in the sixth inning. And now here is Gino two for three. Maybe today’s the start of another bonafide heater. There you tag three. And he got him. It took a while to get that first stop for Luis Garcia. And just as quickly as the opportunity came, so it went for the Diamondbacks. They failed to score. Cal Finnegan will get the top of the order. It’ll be Carol Marte Perdomo. The Debbecks are going to overcome this three-run deficit. That was in tight and it might have pinched Corbin’s fingers. The call was hit by a pitch and now the Nationals are challenging. Looked like it hit the knob and the fingers. So, it can hit the bat and then the hand and that’s a foul ball. Have to review the call on the field stands. No matter what there goes Corbin and in standing with stolen base number 10 on the season. Perdom’s got to get on base to third. It’s Tenna. And though Carol scores, they’re now two down. So the last hopes rest on the shoulders of Naylor. Swing and a fly ball and he makes the catch and a curly W’s in the books. It’s another night filled with walks and errors for Arizona that lead to costly runs.
