Before everyone jumps the gun and says the “victim” is greedy, remember the point of civil trial is to get damages. They probably came up with a number and then decided to file it in court. The number the Jury actually awards is dependent on bunch of factors.
Also the point of filing Civil suit is that the Victim can get some relief from the crime since the burden of proof is lower. Criminal cases have a high burden of proof (beyond a reasonable doubt) which means they have to go above and beyond. A prosecutor might not file charges if they don’t think they can get a conviction or a plea deal.

People won’t listen to this but just to get this out there: anyone can file a civil suit, you have to convince the police and DA to charge for a criminal case. In a civil case you apply for damages, so of course the request is for millions given who the defendant is. This is not unusual, nor is it evidence of any conclusion you’ve decided upon.
