MLB LIVE🔴 Toronto Blue Jays vs Oakland Athletics – May 31, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
And welcome in everybody. Glad you’re with us. Saturday baseball on the show. It’s the Athletics and the Toronto Blue Jays. [Music] First pitch coming your way next. So almost ready to get underway and on the hill here today. Number 65. Well, this guy’s just been filthy out there on the mound. Hitters batting under 200 against him and they’re just having a hard time squaring up anything, doing any type of damage. The only way he hurts himself is if he gives up the free passes and surreners a rare home run. But outside of that, it’s going to be a tough job for the opposing lineup today. Ready to go now. Now the A’s designated hitter, Lawrence Butler. That one blasted deep to right. Springer drop step going back. Gone. Straight into the visitors bullpen. The first batter of the game leaves the yard. His second home run of the series. It’s one- nothing. He only needed one swing to square it up. Not wasting any time in that at bat. Boo. Aggressive and it paid off. Well, so much for settling into this game, Boo. No courtesy. First pitch take right there. He was ready from the second he stepped into the box, got a pitch to hit, jumped all over. I tell you what, that’ll fire up the guys in your dugout. At the plate, Jacob Wilson. That’s a strike. The one highf fly ball on that one curling foul down the right side with the big bats coming up and a home run already surrendered. He’s really going to have to execute against these next couple of batters. Drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck. ranging back and that one hops the wall and he starts his afternoon off right with a double back against the wall with two strikes but found a way. Pretty much just a textbook double into the gap and when you can drop one in there between the outfielders, you know you’re making the turn at first. Just an excellent swing. Brent Rooker up next for the A’s. this to third and that one handled. One out in the top of the first and time now to check out the A’s lineup. Singing the numbers tell us this is an offense designed to swing it. They’re not going to force a ton of action on the bases. And so obviously that is one of the focal points that we’ll look at. And you look at the quality of the at bats because of the fact that the legs aren’t a part of this game. They have to be very selective. Look for long pitch counts, grinding out at bats, and really barrels to the baseball because it’s a lot easier to jog around the bases than for these players to sprint. Tyler Sodro stands in here, leaves that one off the inside, and there’s a foul ball. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. That one misses. Two and one. Swang going to grounder. Foul base side. Little bit low and now it’s filled up. Three and two. Really good take especially with two strikes. This one in the air. Two down. Oh, that’s what he’s looking for with the fast ball above the zone. A swing and miss or weak contact. Miguel and Here’s Miguel Anduhar. He’s kind of an outlier, especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power. Swing and a foul out of play. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. Fought off foul singy. One of the things that’s interesting is that guys really don’t worry about swing and miss from an offensive standpoint anymore. So when you see some Oh, that’s a strike out and that’ll do it for the unit. The A’s strike first. It’s now one- nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back now in Toronto. Now the starting pitcher in this one, Luis Severino. Chris, how about a scouting report? Well, that whip is just below the league average, and that’s a good thing in this case, not allowing too many base runners. So on most days, he’s going to go out there and compete and put his team in a position to win. And I expect to see that from him in this one today. Bottom of the first and now for the Jays. Dalton Vo swinging a foul straight back. Yeah. And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end. Next offering is down low. One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins, the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter, the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter. Three ball strike and a pitch. Can’t glove it cleanly. Still fires to first and they get the out. Good recovery. Wasn’t easy following the misplay. Let’s take a look at the lineup for the Blue Jays. Not a whole lot going their way offensively the last few games, Chris. Yeah, but again, that can put more pressure on the pitching staff to try to limit the opponent to just one or two runs a game knowing that their offense is not scoring right now. And that never really works well because you try to be too fine and you end up giving up a lot of runs. So, we’ll see if everybody can just relax, bring things together, and perform at a level that they’re capable of. And first off is fouled off. Yeah. And I figured you would get caught into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. [Music] This is a batter who clearly performs better in day games. I don’t know why, but his numbers generally back it up. Bounce to the right. Urias jumps, throws, it’s there. And that’s a great play. That is third. First baseman, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Two outs, space is empty. Here’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. That one finds the zone and it’s 0 and one. [Music] hard hit left side. Sends it to first and Guerrero is set down and the Blue Jays go down. One, two, three. Nothing doing it for the Blue Jays and it remains one- nothing. All set for the start of the inning. Here’s the catcher, Shay Langalers. hit hard on the ground to short. Fires over to Guerrero. Lead off man retired here in the second. Well, you talk about how the ball is coming out of the pitcher’s hand. The way it comes out of his hand as an infielder. Wow. Really impressive. Now it’s the rookie first baseman, CJ Alexander. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Gary Simmons, our played umpire today, sort of has a reputation as a pitcher umpire. Yeah, a little bit of a wider zone than most, I’d say. And a wide zone can be tough to deal with as a hitter cuz you have to start expanding what you’re looking for, covering both sides. And with the stuff pitchers have today, you’re just not going to have a lot of success. Fast ball is outside. What about an umpire’s height? How much of a role does that play in your experience and what the strike zone is like? Yeah, I think it pushes the strike zone up a little bit, which you know, as a former hitter, you like that. You wanted the ball up. You didn’t want to have to deal with stuff down in the zone consistently. And now the count filled up three and two. As the game has moved along, we see more and more information supplied by teams about the umpires. I’ve been in clubhouses where they have pictures of all four guys, nicknames, hometowns, and as well hobbies listed just so you can kind of small talk the umpire a little bit. That’s great. Luis Maras in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. [Music] Swinging a miss at a slider. Two out. Base is empty. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. [Music] And a slider misses down and away. One ball, two strike. [Music] Swing and a miss and he got him. And it’s a three up, three down inning. Nothing across here this half. We go to the bottom of inning number two. It’s the A’s one and the Jay’s nothing. Back here at Rogers Center. Bottom of the second. Now the Toronto four-hole hitter, George Springer. Springer. Severino back to work outside. Just out. Next offering is fouled back [Applause] right through there for a strike. [Applause] And a swing and a miss. Down on strikes and one out. Now here’s the third baseman Addison Barger. [Music] That one the other way and that’s just fouled. One out. Base is empty. Out to short. Wilson fires to first on the run and very nicely done for the out. Well, nice job by the shortstop to feel that on the back hand and gather himself, get his feet underneath him. He had a long throw, but he knew he had plenty of time to take that extra step, secure the grip, and finish the throw. Now it’s the Toronto designated hitter, Ernie Clement. Pitch misses there and it’s one and0. This lineup’s going to have to find a way to make him work a little harder out there on the mound. I mean, he is just mowing him down. He’s settling in. You got to make him uncomfortable. Maybe step out of the box, call timeout, do whatever it takes. And there’s the strike. Looks like a really good fast ball today. You can hear that catcher mitt popping. Looking forward to hearing a lot of that one in this one. Check swing called strike. And they’ll do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. This one in the air center field. Clark settles underneath it and makes the play and that’s out number three. We played two innings. It’s one to nothing. And we’re back. And here’s the rookie center fielder, Denzel Clark. Denzel Clark. Clark measures 6’4 in hitting ninth in today’s lineup. And he was drafted in the fourth round in 2021. [Music] just missed. Swings and blasts one deep to left center. A dive and he can’t haul it in into second easily with a leadoff double. He was all over that one. That’s a good sound coming off the bat, man. And as he connected out front, ripped it into the outfield. That’s one of those swings where you just don’t even feel the ball hit the barrel. That’s a pure stroke. Next up for the A’s, Lawrence Butler. He’s already homerred here in this one. And that drops in for a strike. Well struck right field. Say goodbye to that one. Another homer. He’s done it again. His second homer of the game. And they add to the lead. It’s 3 nothing. Already playing with the lead. And now they’re celebrating a home run. They’re having a great time out there with a low 90s fast. You have to live on the edges and hit your spots. If you don’t, you’ll get hit hard. Really good swing there. Patient. Waited for it. It was like BP all over again. And now Jacob Wilson. And first off is fouled off. swing and a miss as he chases that one darting out of the zone. Next offering is downstairs. Can be tough to bounce back after a big home run, but nobody on, nobody out. You just have to treat it as a fresh inning. tapped on the ground softly to short. Santandere fires over to first and one away in the top of the third. [Applause] Brent Rooker up next for the A’s. That’s in for a strike. Probably the best one we have seen. Throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. Ow. And two now. Ball on there. Still only one out here in the inning. Two balls. two strikes that misses the zone and it’s three and two. One down. Base is empty. Two high. And it’s ball four. I don’t think he really wanted to pitch to him right there anyhow. Tyler. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Tyler Soderstrom. First pitch just misses. Rooker leads off first with one away. Swing and a miss. Strike one. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. Liner saved at first. Nothing you can do about those as a hitter. Even though you know that, they still drive you absolutely crazy. And here is Miguel Anduhar. Check on the runner and he’s back in safely. And that one misses up and in. Ball one. That’s good pitch there. really had some run and finished a little up and in just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it. He had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Swing and a miss. That is strike two. Left that change up. Got away with one there and he’ll take it, but doesn’t want to make that mistake again. And a ball evens the count. Two runs across in the inning. We’re here in the top half of inning number three down the right field line. That’s a base hit. And the throws off blind safe at third. Up next for the catcher Shay Lang. So two outs with runners on the corners. And now the catcher comes up to him. Shay Langalers right through there for a [Music] strike. Two on, two outs. A little bit high maybe. And one and one. Close pitch there. And he’s kind of wondering where it missed. You know, getting a feel for each umpire strike zone is something that pitchers and hitters really have to think about and work on from game to game and sometimes from at bat to at bat. Ball to strike. Drilled in the air high and deep right field. That’s back there, reaching for it and brings it in. The A’s with a two-run blast. It’s now three nothing. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. as we go to the last of the third. And now for the Jays, Nathan Lucas. Lucas at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot and he can’t come up with it. Still manages a throw. Save. It was never going to be easy after the missed play. Lead off man aboard on the error and that puts your pitcher in a little bit of a tough spot right away to start the inning. Not where you want to be. So we’ll see if he’s able to work around it and pick the defense up. Here’s the catcher to hit. Ali Sanchez turned on but foul wide of third. Come on. just missed. Well, the offense has gotten going and a pitcher wants to go out there, have a real quick inning, get those guys back into the dugout so those bats can stay hot. The 1-1 is fouled off. [Applause] Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. Soderstrom makes the grab on the run. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. Here’s the second baseman, Michael Stefonic. Stay out of the double. That’s in there. That’s strike one. There’s the strike of the knees. Quickly into an 02 count. Both pitches were down in the zone. I think you set your sights a little bit higher cuz you’ll have a tendency to chase if you look down in that area. Man at first, one away. And that one is inside. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. Toronto. That missed by a lot. Three and two now. [Music] Set down on strikes. Fast ball at the letters. Frozen strike three. I’m not saying it it wasn’t a strike or, you know, it was a ball, whatever. But just the location with that velocity, it’s hard enough just even if the velocity is not great, but that velocity, that location, tip your calf. Back to the leadoff spot in the Blue Jays lineup. Now here’s the leadoff man for the Blue Jays, Dalton Vo. And that’s pushed foul off to the left and out of [Music] play. Fouled off left side. swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field. They stop the lead runner at second. Now two on with two outs. Boo. I don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike, but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock. Anthony Santandere at the plate and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike [Music] and downstairs. Let’s go. Tapped at the plate, but it’s a foul ball. [Applause] And down on strikes. And he’s registered three Ks in this one. Blue Jays leave a pair. Still down three nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. start of the fourth. And now the first baseman CJ Alexander and first offering is fouled off. Ripped to third and caught. That at bat is a positive sign even though it probably doesn’t feel like it. He hit the ball hard, but it doesn’t always work out in your favor. Sometimes a defender is there to make a play. Here’s Luis Oas struck out swinging his first time. Misses off the play. And that’s ball one. And a strike on the outside edge. Base is empty, one away. Top half of inning number four. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. Now batting center Denzel. Now at the plate, Denzel Clark. One for one with a double and a run scored. And first offering is fouled off. [Music] leads off first with one [Music] away. Next offering is in for a strike. Toronto’s bullpen with some action. Joseia up and loosening in the pen. Basset getting loose as well. [Music] Three swing and a miss. Struck him out. Goes to second. Save and he’s into scoring position with two away on a wild pitch. Back to the top of the lineup now. Here’s the leadoff hitter for the A’s, Lawrence Butler. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Oh, and one. Hit hard. Should be extra bases. Headed for the plate. He’ll score easily. Safe at second with a double. Third hit for him this afternoon. Well, here we are. Third time through the order. And this is where we see the OPS jump up. Manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner than he anticipated. Here comes the skipper. And we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Number 65 will depart. And this is one he’d like to forget. Back with a new arm after this. number 68 into the game. Well, good luck against this guy. He’s been extremely tough to hit this year. His numbers are excellent. So, runner at second, two down. Next up for the A’s, Jacob Wilson. One for two. check swing and he went strike one. Oh, one’s the count. Man on second, two down in there at the knees. Oh, and two. Really good cutter that he’s able to front door and back door. That pitch is devastating. That’s off the inside corner and it’s one and two. The A’s looking to add another flying drive and that’s a base hit out into center field coming home. He will score. It’s an RBI single. It’s 5 nothing. Puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI. Other than ripping one into the gap or blasting one over the wall, there aren’t a whole lot of hits that are more satisfying than a nice line drive in the center field. So, that definitely felt good. Two outs, runner at first. Brent Rooker up next for the A’s. There’s the strike. And that one cutting but missing down low on the ground to the left. Fires over to Guerrero. Out number three. Two runs, three hits, no errors, and one left. And midway in the fourth, it’s the A’s five and the Jay’s nothing. ready to go for the last half of the inning. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Now, I love the fact that we’ve seen both Vladimir Guerrero and Vlatty Jr. win the home run derby. They’re the first fatherson duo to ever win it. Vlatty back in 2007 and Vlatty Jr. in 2023. Even though his dad didn’t give him any advice for the event other than to go out there and hit home runs. Now betting right fielder and the batter is George Springer. He was a strikeout victim his first time fast for a strike. 0 and one. The Athletics leading by five. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. swing and a miss as he was late. When you throw a fast ball by a guy like that, I imagine it’s got to feel incredible. Look for him to throw it again at some point. And a swing and a miss. He’s notched four strikeouts now. Oh, there’s a three pitch strikeout. He can do whatever he wants with the baseball right now. And next for Toronto, Addison Barger 0 for one. grounded out in his first at bat. [Music] And there’s the strike. Well, you got to find a way to catch up to that pitch. Perhaps shorten the swing, eliminate the stride. That one came in hot. But right down the middle, you’re saying to yourself, how did I miss that pitch? Got to make a quick adjustment. Next offering in there for a strike. And that’s strike two. And that’s outside two strike inside. Now two balls and two strikes. That’s a ball. Tried the sweeper. Swing and a ball popped in the air. Urias makes the play and it’s out number three. Down in order go the Blue Jays. It’s 5 nothing. Back now in Toronto. Now the left fielder Tyler Sodrost and he hits a ground ball right side fires over to Guerrero and the lead offense set down in their half of the fifth. Next up for the A’s, Miguel Anduhar. Looking good. Started to go after it. Now it’ll look down to first. Did not go. And that one sliced foul. center field. He’s got it. There’s two away. Catcher Shay Langalers. Two down, base is empty. And now here’s the A’s catcher Sha Langalers. Bowl for two in this one. Go and one. That’s a ball. Tried to attack with the sweeper. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Line drive. And that is that. And the A’s are gone in order, but they hold a five nothing lead. Back here at Rogers Center, we head to the bottom of the fifth. And now the DH Ernie Clement. Severino back to work. That’s in there. And that is strike one. Well, these Blue Jays just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone, and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see, but I think they have to. Off the mark there. It’s two and two. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it [Music] again. And a pop off right side. Foul territory. Alexander grabs it on the run. Now batting left fielder Nathan Lucas. Here’s the left fielder Nathan Lucas. He’s 0 for one. Swing and a ball lined out towards center. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out and there’s two down. Two outs. Space is empty. So, up next for Toronto, Ali Sanchez. Toronto. The offense needs to start showing some fight against this starter. He’s doing his thing out there. They’re going to have to push back at some point and make him work a little bit harder. Climb the ladder with that fast ball and it’s 0 and [Music] one. Foul ball. Looking sharp just a strike away from five shutout innings. just outside and the count is one and two. Caught a break right there. Pretty good pitch on the outside corner. Highfly ball out to center field. Clark carous it. And that is that and we’re back. Start of the six, John Shami with Chris Singleton and leading off CJ Alexander. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Alexander in his rookie season, 28 years old, and he found his way onto the team after being claimed off waiverss. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side. One up, one down. Now batting second. Now it’s the second baseman Luis Urias. Come on. First pitch and he just misses. Counts one and0. Right through there for a strike. One and one. Base is empty. One away. And we’re the top half of the six. Up and in. Two balls in a strike. [Music] top of the zone and it’s called a strike and it remains two and two. Come on. And down on strikes he goes. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. Next up for the A’s, Denzel Clark. [Music] And the first pitch misses for ball one. [Music] Just missed. Hey That one fouled off. Two and two. Cut on and miss. Struck him out. The A’s go quietly. No runs, no hits, no errors. 91 and two scheduled to hit in the home half of the sixth. It’s the A’s five and the Jay’s nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Well, we go bottom six now. Michael Stefonic fast for a strike. I’m impressed by the number of first pitch strikes. He’s not afraid of contact. Some guys, they’ll nibble just because they don’t want to get hit hard. That’s not what we’re seeing here. Hit on the ground to the right side and foul ball. Severino just misses at the count. One and two. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. Severino kicks deals ball two. Yeah, that’s too high. [Music] and he chases that one. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strike out. You can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one. And now it’s Daltton Bar. And that one’s a little bit low. One and0. And a strike. The A’s leading by five here in the bottom of the [Music] six. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. Dominant performance for him today. Boo. Just two hits allowed so far. No runs across either and he’s had an answer for just about every hitter he’s faced. So I don’t think this hit is going to knock him off his stride too much. Anthony Santandere next up for the Blue Jays. Yeah, there’s the strike. And there’s the strike. Two. Next pitch way upstairs. O2 fast ball way out of the zone. I think he’s trying to speed him up. Got to stay back. Off speed’s probably coming. [Music] You got this. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Baro at first. One gone. And now two and two. Severino with another strike out. Vlatty Jr. stepping to the dish now. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. And a foul ball. [Music] Next offering is fouled back. Way inside. Two strike. Two balls. Two strikes. Two- two on the way. In the air out towards right center. Clark sizing this one up and he makes the catch and that will end the inning. One left for Toronto. Still looking at that five nothing deficit. Now, welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Chris Basset. I think it’s got to be a little tough coming in out of the pin when your guys are trailing so big on the scoreboard. Just doesn’t have the same intensity to it. But he’s got to find a way because these batters count the same for his stats obviously regardless of the score. Next to hit, Lawrence Butler. And the way he’s going in this one, we’ve been waiting for his spot to come around again. All right, listen everyone. Stop what you’re doing right now. This guy’s got two home runs already. Now he’s going for number three. [Music] In the air, left field down the line. Could be extra bases. Takes the turn. He’s digging for second. And he greets the new arm from the bullpen with a double. The first move felt like a bit of a guess. You have to be right in those spots or things can get away from you awfully quickly. And the batter will be the shortstop Jacob Wilson. RBI knock for him last time. Now a chance to drive in another run the other way and foul ball. That one fouled off. Got him. And now one away. Now that rightielder. Now it’s the right fielder. Brent Rooker. Moved to second. Butler dives back in safely. [Music] They say you win. Oh, and one man at second and that one fouled off. Let’s go. [Music] That’s a little bit low. One ball, two strikes. The count. [Music] Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Now batting left fielder Tyler Sodrom. Tyler Soderstrom up next for the A’s. 0 for three in this one. Ripped on the ground to second. Fires over to Guerrero. Third out and that ends the frame. The A’s strand one as they are unable to add to their five nothing lead. [Music] Back now in Toronto. Here’s George Springer to start it off. That one’s in there. Strike one. The Athletics have some bullpen action. Justin Sterner, the rookie right-hander, is getting loose. Sears, a left-hander, also throwing. Swings, threw it, and that’s a strike out. Well, clearly just anxious right there and understandably so. on an 02 count. You feel like you’ve got a lot of plate to cover and you don’t want to strike out and you end up striking out. That’s just one of those pitches where it’s not over the plate, but because you committed to it as it was leaving his hand, by the time you realized it wasn’t going to be in the zone, it’s too late to hold up your swing. [Music] That one misses. One and one. fouls one off out of play back to our left. He’s mixing his pitches really well. Late on that fast ball after seeing the change up. See if he can elevate one. I think if he does, he’ll get the swing and miss. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and he’s up to eight strikeouts in this one. Went right after him with that two strike pitch as he continues to roll on the mound. Yeah, he’s not out there trying to nibble at all. He is attacky in the strike zone. And I think when your confidence builds as the start goes on, still putting up all zeros on the scoreboard, gives you a lot of confidence that you can really continue to go after these hitters. And that wasn’t the best pitch for the strike out there. And he probably admit that, but he got it by him. Went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. Just a simple ground ball the other way that had eyes on it. Man, sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel. put the ball in play and just hope it finds a hole. Now the left fielder Nathan Lucas first off and it just misses. Two outs. That one finds the zone and it’s two and one. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Still able to fire over. They get the force. Misplay doesn’t cost him. Inning over. still in total command on the mound with seven shut out innings. It’s the A’s five and the Jay’s nothing. Ready to begin the eighth. Now the third baseman. Miguel Anduharuhar Basset back to work. That one outside. Ball one. on the ground to third rolls across the diamond. First out in the top of the eighth catcher Shay Langalers. Shay Langalers up next for the A’s. This is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively. Fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate. Good game caller, good at framing, but it’s that big arm that really stands out. Ball one, no strikes. The one, you come into the game knowing that unless the ball’s in the dirt or gets by him, we’re probably not going to steal anything today. So, that’s where you want to get a little more aggressive on your secondary lead and hope that some base hits, some slog, some home runs can come into play. [Music] that pitch in for a strike. They’re now three in one. Well, I’ll say this as a former position player and base steeler. When you come into a game and you’ve got a guy like this behind the dish with a big arm, you really have to change your approach. Can’t try to steal cuz you’ll get thrown out. Maybe get a little bigger lead, be aggressive on the secondary, but this type of guy shuts the running game down. Okay, that’s a walk. Went with the cutter again, but couldn’t find his own. You know, I think he’s okay with that outcome. It wasn’t an intentional walk, but he wasn’t exactly trying to attack the zone either. So, a man at first. Next up for the A’s, CJ Alexander. And that’s a little bit high. And that is ball one. [Music] Swings and chases a low one there. Well, the hitter shows the pitcher that he’s willing to go after that pitch down in the zone. So perhaps he’ll come back to it. Still try to get that ground ball double play. Basset with a look to first. Langelers back on a dive. [Music] So a foul ball makes it one and two. [Music] just with that one. Swing and this one’s bounced to the ground. Bounces into the outfield. That’s a base hit. And now to a board to third. Not in time. And it’s runners at the corners with one gone. just kept it simple. Played pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from and there was just no one there to knock it down. Runners at the corners here. One away. Here’s the second baseman, Luis Urias. He’s been a great free agent side. That one way inside. Brothers at the corners. one away and we’re in the top of the eighth. Next offering is fouled [Music] back and that’s way high. Ball two. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. Next pitch is downstairs. Three balls, one strike. Fouled off. He was late. Langalers the runner at third. Alexander at first. One gone and they’re all loaded up. ball for that. Denzel Clark up next for the A’s. One for [Music] three. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. One out. Base is full. that catches the outside corner and it’s one and one. Two balls, one strike. In situations like these, the air can get really thin up there at the plate. Got to find a way to breathe and slow everything down. The 2-1. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. Well, he’s going to have some thinking to do when he leaves the ballpark after this one. That was his third strike out. And this one looking obviously. So, he’s been a little overmatched. He’s got to find a way just to be more competitive up there at the plate. Butler stands in with two away as he takes a ball. Base is loaded. Two down. swings through that one for strike two. [Music] And a swing and a miss. And that’s down. back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, Justin Sterner. And you know, bullpin guys can struggle sometimes when they’re called upon with big leads because it just doesn’t have the same intensity as a tight game. So, we’ll see how sharp he is. Your mental toughness matters in situations like this as well. And now, Ali Sanchez. on the ground right side to first in time. One up, one down. Really nice job to get your first down to the ball game. Michael Stefonic. Michael Stefonic next up for the Blue Jays. Right down to shoot and that’s strike one. There it was. Oh, here it is. Hit it. He gets a take. Gets ahead in a count. That one not close. And the count is one and one. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Anthony Maldonado preparing to come on if needed. [Music] in the air right side and that’s a base hit and that’s going to get into the corner and it gets by him and he’ll reach second with one away for the Blue Jays. One out, runner at second. Here’s the center fielder, Dalton Vo. Breaking ball inside and it’s one and0. Fast ball for a strike. I got one ball, one strike. [Music] So, a foul ball makes it one and two. One out and a runner at second. [Music] The next offering misses and the count’s even at two. [Music] Swang and a miss. Struck him out. two gone. Not a great curveball there at all, but clearly he wasn’t looking for it because it just dropped right into the happy zone. And it looked like to me the swing was a little bit late. Tells me he gave up on it early and then just tried to have that emergency hack at the last second to put it in play. Santandere the next to hit takes ball one. Stfanic on it second with two down. That’s in there. Strike one. Swing and a miss. And he got him to chase. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. ball. Runner at second. Two down here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Fights it off. You’ll see [Music] another. Comes up empty as he chases that one in the dirt. Up with it. Fires to first. That completes the strike out. And that’ll do it. A hit and an error in the inning, but they fail to score through eight full. It’s the A’s five and the Jay’s nothing. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mount, Josea. He last pitched four days ago, so he should feel pretty fresh. So, digging in, Jacob Wilson. The emmo for him is contact. A guy who’s going to deliver average, not a ton of power. He’s looking to hit a line drive somewhere. Well, that’s why it’s a team. I mean, when you look at a lineup, he’s a great two-hole hitter or a guy that you could put at the bottom to help turn that lineup over to have some momentum for your top hitters coming up to the plate. Now, right fielder Brent Rooker, man at first, nobody out. And now the right fielder Brent Rooker and it’s found away. Urania, a righty that throws with power. He features a sinker, a slider, a change up, and he works in a four [Music] seamer. Next offering is down low. Movement in the Blue Jays bullpen. Yariel Rodriguez, the young right-hander up and throwing. Green also getting ready. [Music] ripped on a line to center and that’s a base hit and it’s now first and second to start the inning. Now batting left fieldielder Tyler Sodro. Next to hit Tyler Soderstrom. Just missed. First and second, no outs here in the top of the ninth. Swag and a [Music] miss. That one ripped and that should be extra bases. Wilson around third. One run across. Rooker rounds third headed for the plate. He’ll score. Two runs are in. Picks himself up a couple of ribbies. I love the approach he had right there with that pitch. Not trying to do too much, but still looking to drive it. And that’s exactly what he’s able to do into the opposite field gap for the double. Next up for the A’s, Miguel Anduhar. First pitch and he just misses and delivers outside. He’s getting a little frustrated out there on the mound getting hit around a little bit. Let’s see if he can settle himself down. Runner at second. Nobody out. Next offering is in for a strike. And there’s a foul [Music] ball. Two two now. And a foul ball. He stays alive. [Music] keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Foul ball. Another two- two upcoming. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. And that’s in the dirt. Three and two now up the middle. Oh, nice play from his knees. The throw and that’s a great play for the out. Look at the commitment to make the play down on the ground from the knees. That’s not just arm strength, guys. That’s core strength as well. Look at that rocketing across the diamond. Outstanding job. And now a chance for Shay Langalers, known for his rocket arm behind the plate. Just missed. [Music] This one drilled to left. No doubt about it as they add on more. Gone. He’ll circle the bases. Home run number 10 on the year. And they boost their lead. It’s 9 nothing. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. They’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. The hard sinker can be a pretty tough pitch because of the late life and movement, but somehow he got the barrel to that pitch. Stayed through it. Really nice job of staying on the backside until it was time to transfer that weight and a really nice home run. Here comes the manager out of the Blue Jays dugout and he will make a move to the pen. Josea done for the day. And as he heads for the dugout, we’ll take a quick break. New arm on the mound when we get back. Chad Green ready to go. Well, they need someone to stop the bleeding and keep the score right where it is. Seems like a tough task today with the way this lineup is swinging. It here’s the first baseman, CJ Alexander. And first offering is fouled off. Plenty of offense in this one, Singy. I guess you’d say kind of what we expected though. Well, this was a game looking at the pitching matchup where you expected offense to score and not as lopsided as this. Um, but yeah, you definitely expected to see some offense coming up. And that drops in for a strike. And there’s a ball. Two strikes. Swing in a liner. Base hit out into right center field. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Couple of hits in a row for him here. Off the bat, he was headed for the gap all the way. And as a hitter, you love seeing those as you take your first couple of steps out of the box. You know you got some real estate to run on. And such a good feeling. Nice liner into the gap right there. And now here is Luis Uria. And that one a little below the knees. And that’s ball one. [Music] Yeah, big swing and a miss. Well, there’s a certain point where you have to commit to what you think you see. And he guessed wrong right there. Nasty slider with just terrific bite at the end. Yeah, the swing and a miss there. It might be time to choke up a little bit. Get that front foot down early. Maybe even just spread out. He’s really late right now. Swing and a miss. And he’s down on strikes. Two gone now. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strikeout. Denzel Clark will hit next. One for four with a double. just missed. [Music] And that’s off the inside edge. And now two and 0. Alexander off of first with two away. That one missed. Three balls. No strike. So now two ones out and two outs. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire at bat. Lawrence Butler. First and second, two down. And next is the designated hitter, Lawrence Butler. [Music] That one misses. That’s five straight. First and second, two down. Ground ball right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. So, nine batters come to the plate, four of them score. Hard to the order. 345 will get their shot in the bottom of the ninth. It’s the A’s nine and the Jay’s nothing. This game’s a bit of a blowout. Singy, let’s talk about something random. Let’s do it. All right, Singi, you’ve tightened up the hairdo, but back when you played, how valuable was it to have a barber in the clubhouse? Well, Boo, I’m going to say invaluable. That’s how valuable that it was because I was the barber. Yes. I was the team barber, man. I’d be cutting hair 7:05 game. I’d be finishing cutting someone’s hair at 6:45. Whoa. And I’d ask these guys, you’re making millions of dollars. Why can’t you go to a stylist and get your hair done? coming to the clubhouse pressuring me to cut your hair before a game. Would they pay you? No, absolutely not. Not even a meal on the road. So, I think it’s great now that most of these teams have professional barbers that come in and make them look fresh before the games. Scale of 1 to 10, how good a barber were you? For a non-professional, I’d say I was probably a seven. But if I was comparing to professionals, I’d be like a three. Fans another. And that’s three straight strikeouts. And it’ll be George Springer to step to the plate. 0 for three with three strikeouts. I’ll never forget the time that I cut Jos Conco’s hair. Had a pretty big melon boot and uh it it took a while. Yeah, there’s a little pressure there, too, because he had a big date that night and he wanted me to make sure that everything looked good. Wow. Yeah, he’s a big guy, too. I didn’t want him to hurt me. Yeah, he’s large. Sprayer swings through that one. It’s a strikeout. Blue Jays have just one out left here. Now, that slider wasn’t even close to the strike zone and he got him to chase. That’s just a bad approach right there. Either he was looking for something else and got completely fooled or he was sitting all over the slider and just couldn’t resist the temptation, but man, really expanded right there and didn’t have a chance to make the contact with that pitch. Barner in the box here. Lets that one go for a ball. And that’s downstairs. And it’s two and 0. Hard hit right side. Throw to first and ball game. And the A’s use two pitchers to combine for the shut out. A win on the last day of the month. You close it out with the W, but you want to carry that momentum into the next game. 9 nothing your final in this one. The A’s are victorious for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shambi. Thanks for joining us.
