The AJ Hinch Show, a preview of today’s game with Tigers manager AJ Hinch, brought to you by McLaren Health, official health care system of the Detroit Tigers. Back on the Tigers pregame show, AJ Hinch met with the media prior to today’s game and he was asked about the increased swing and miss in Riley Green’s game. Let’s hear from AJ. I think the swing and miss is entirely about pitch selection. Like it doesn’t matter what your path is. If you pick a bad pitch to swing at, you’re you’re going to miss at this level. So, um his swing there are an occasional swing and miss in the zone, but a lot of his his miss is is chase. And like a lot of hitters are that way. And I it’s way easier when you sort of migrate to the dugout and sit and watch from the side because it’s you know the you know it’s hard in the box. So I I think with with Riley the better pitch that he gets the better he does and he does get into swing mode and and and over swings a little bit. Um which is the recipe to correct for him. You know, I think it’s um he’s he’s going to pitch get pitched as hard as anybody or as uniquely as anybody or um as delicately as anybody. So, he can he can counter by shrinking his strike zone and not not being in such swing mode. Um that being said, when he’s ready to hit on pitch one and he hits it 440 ft, that’s a good mindset to have is be aggressive. It’s just about the zone. It’s not a problem. like right they said. No, it’s it’s there’s always ways to get better. So, I I don’t I don’t think it’s a problem. I think it’s it’s part of him growing up in the big leagues and becoming the hitter that he’s going to be. And he’s not finished yet, nor is he ever going to be because hitters should always, you know, be trying to get better. What’s the report on Cobing last night? I mean, the numbers were good. Does it look like he was straining a little bit with the Yeah. No, he’s he’s not I don’t think he’s feeling great physically other than his delivery and being able to execute pitches. You know, the stuff was really good and um he looked like he was under a lot of stress. I haven’t spoken to him directly, but um the information coming back is that he’s still battling a lot. And you know, I I applaud him for what he’s trying to do because he’s he’s um you know, pitching through uh a lot of discomfort, but um we’re going to have to continue to nudge him forward or um continue to give him some rest so that that he can can continue to pitch. You know, I think the the the stuff is good, which is which is the teaser because, you know, he could take the stuff he was pitching last night in a ball and apply it in the big leagues and he’s going to get soft contact and miss like he always has. Uh but moving around the mound has been a problem for him and and we’re going to continue to uh you know to nudge him and and and see what he can give us. To build on the question about Riley, are you seeing teams pitch him differently now that he’s made a name for himself more in terms of being an all-star, being someone who’s done damage, he’s someone that, you know, teams key in on in the middle line. Not they haven’t before, but he’s established now. Yeah. I I just think guys, you know, pitchers are always going to be a little bit careful with him and they’re going to try to get him to expand when he’s in swing mode, you know, and and um if they miss in the zone, he he’s hurt him, you know. I mean, he he’s an electrifying hitter and um he’s a guy you want up to bat all the time because of the of the of the production that that he can create and the other side, you know, does have to to to manage against them or pitch against them or uh try to execute on the margins. So, that the control in the strike zone is going to be, you know, key for him to get to even a higher level that he’s at. And he’s already at a pretty good level. Every time we talk teammates about him and ask what impresses them most about him, it’s always that he’s the same guy dayto day, that on his start day, he’s the same school you’re going to be tomorrow and the next day. How do you think that type of attitude impacts the clubhouse and his teammates around? Yeah, I mean his presence it has grown over the the last couple of years and then you know when you get some hardware at this level you end up kind of gain more notoriety and fame and and attention than than ever before. And so, um, I think players are looking for that authentic version of you after that happen. Like once you get sort of famous and and known and, uh, get on the national scene and and I think that’s what our players appreciate about Terrick is he brings it every day. It’s the same. His start days are not intimidating to our guys because he’s approachable and normal. Um, he gets into psycho mode on the mound, but that’s during the game, during the competition. So, I I think our players understand how authentic he is and we all see the work that he puts in and um and he he thrives when he’s when his teammates accomplish something like it’s not all about him and that um that’s an awesome example as a as a premier player on a good team to uh to understand it’s not just about you. And that was Tiger manager AJ Hinch around the league coming up next right here on the Detroit Tigers Radio Network. Time to clean out clutter? Ex big leaguer, ex Japanese player like myself, Rexler. Rex, thanks for being on with us today. Bobby, oh man, we got ball. We got ball here in Kaufman, man. Look how beautiful it is. The bullpin’s been pretty good, but you took a blow today. Lucas Ersk went down. Talk about what that effect might be and how they could replace him. Ah, that hurt. When I got to the ballpark and heard that, man, I he’s one of our best arms. Well, you know, they’ll they’ll have a couple other guys step up in there. We got a we we we’ve got a few new guys from the miners that throw hard, you know, this kid uh uh Andrew Hoffman, he’s got a a good hard fast ball, good change up. We got a kid, Jonathan Bolan, he’s another big guy. Throws hard. You know, Stephen Cruz. What happens when you lose guys, Bobby? And you know this, who’s going to step up? Somebody got to step up. you got to either increase your game or come on strong or do something. But, um, the bullpin’s been great and we we we, uh, typically when we have a four-run lead or actually four runs is all we need. We we have, uh, shut down guys. All we have now is Ersk because Harvey and Ersk, the other two guys, all we have is Estz. Estz is our closer and he’s had a really good year this year. Um, he’s got like 14 saves already and we’re not even halfway through. So, um, but the the pitching is fantastic. We have World Series caliber pitching, and that’s how you win in this game. That’s the that’s the commodity, but the offense is not supplying enough runs, Bobby. It’s been really tough. Salvi’s not having a career year. Pascantino is starting to hit. Junior’s okay. Hasn’t really gotten really hot yet. Massiey’s not hitting. We don’t have any power. We’re last in the world in in home runs. So, we have a team of of a great pitching staff and we just scratch and claw runs, but the pitching has been picking us up all year. I think right now, Bobby, unless we get some help offensively, we’re a 500 team. Well, Hud, there’s one guy offensively I do want to talk about because I love the guy and he kind of flies below the radar and that’s Michael Garcia. He’s been fantastic all year long. I loved them last year. I mean, you talk about twitch, you know, fast twitch guy, can get on base, he’s hitting the ball, and he can steal the base when he’s out there. Yes, Bobby. Michaelel Garcia is a real deal. He’s not only a solid hitter, he’s got a great flat plane with to his swing. It’s a flat bat, so he can use he goes line to line, right field, left field. He hits it where it’s pitched. He plays a brilliant third base. I mean, he’s got a good arm and good hands. A short stop by trade, but you got the best shorts stop in the world and and Bobby Wood Jr. over there, Bobby Baseball. So, he’s But that left side of the infield’s really been nails. Two short stops. It’s not fair to the rest of the hitters because they can’t get many balls through there. Uh but Mikel Garcia so far is our MVP this year. No, he’s been fantastic. Like you said, it’s not as much offensive as you’d like to see from your perspective. The pitching’s been fantastic. This is going to be a really tough task for the Tigers all weekend. Keys to the game brought to you by Rave and Associates by Bell’s Founders and Long Drink. Proudly distributed by Rave Associates. What are your keys to the game today, Bobby? As Tigers look to extend to six straight wins. Well, this is a more macro view, but continue to do the things that they’re doing offensively, especially you know what you’re going to get from school. They’re going to catch the ball behind them. But offensively, don’t try to do too much. Do what the opportunity presents. Riley Green, Torqulson, Dingler, they got balls in the middle of the plate. They got their ace swings off. Next thing you know, they hit balls out of the ballpark. So, if if if Michael Walkas got his good stuff today, he’s living on the edges. Take what they give you. Take the singles, run the bases like they normally do, and find a way to get wins that way. And that’s the beauty of this Tiger team. They can win baseball games in a variety of ways. I was hoping we see the powder blue tops when they came to us early in the year. We didn’t, but this is a good color combination. The powder blues, the little white accent on the front of the cap. Love it. I’m all in. And the blue pants. When you go with the powder blues, you got to go all in. Go all in. And the Royals have done it. Believe it. That’s one way to describe it. He fired himself a Maddox complete game. Tied his careerhigh with 13 strikeouts. Masterful performance on just two hits. The complete game shut out of the Guardians. And it was much needed at the time, too. Tigers had dropped the first three of that series as Bobby Wit Jr. stands in and takes high and away. And that’s ball one. Yeah, context is important. You’re right. They needed to write the ship. They needed to get a W. Even if you get swept this time of year early on, it’s not the death nail, but you want to stop it. Big dog did it. The 10 little half swing. Whit went around on a change away and the count evens and the ball in a strike. This is one of those matchups that you circle. Scubble versus Wit. That is a dangerous stick up at the plate as Scooble rocks and deals on the one two. This is down and in with a change up just below the bottom rail. Even up two balls, two strikes. Yeah, it’s funny. He’s slumping in in May and it’s right right just a shade under 250. That’s the funny part. But that’s the kind of player he is. These are the kind of match ups you want to see. Two down and Scoobles got his first K of the day. And that’s a master class on how to use that pitch. It was a close miss in that 98 mph fast ball. Just missed the inside corner on the previous strike two pitch and he says, “Okay, I’ll do something else here.” Throws that change up down the way. Fades off the plate. No chance for Bobby Whit Jr. Here’s Salvador Perez. Bases empty, two outs in the first, no score. First pitch, check swing and a cold strike on a sinker in. Wild stat here, Bobby. Salvador Perez has four career home runs against Terubel. No other hitter in the big leagues has more than two. The 01 swinging a foul straight back on a high fast ball and Scoo ahead nothing and two. You can get him into swing mode and go upstairs on occasion. Yo, two sends this one in the air down the third baseline and foul into the seats. The downside to that is if you miss one ball down of where you want to go, they’ll make you pay for it. We saw that last night. Wonka ahead of Green. No balls and two strikes. Riley’s having a tremendous month of May. The O2 wave and a miss and a change up away. Baka picks up his first strike out. And there’s one gone for Spencer Torqulson. Torque. The 1-1 wave and a miss on a cutter. And it’s a ball in two strikes on Torl. It’s good pitch for Walker. That’s what he tries to do to right-handed hitters. Show them the fast ball up. Maybe sink it down and into them. Then show him the cutter and then throw that slider a little bit bigger than the cutter with some depth. Away again the one two. Torbolson takes away slightly on the curb. It is dollars on deck. And if Torque gets hit this inning, Northville Lumber will donate to Detroit Bloodbusters. Northville Lumber, Michigan’s number one track steeler. It’s two and two on Spencer Torlson. Waka delivers. Swung on, hammered in the air. Foul down the right field line. Do it again at two and two. Feels up and in on Tolson. He turns away from a curveball that time and it runs the count full. A Kansas City team that has hit the skids in the month of May. Just two games over 500. 32 is a high called strike free on a change up. Back to back strikeouts for Wonka. Two down. Yeah, sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good, partner. Michael Wonka does not want changed up at the top of the zone. That’s a recipe for disaster, but he locked him up. He locked Torque up with the speed and couldn’t pull the trigger. Torque thought it was up. Didn’t like the call. He walked away. No protest. Here’s Wel Perez. Nice day yesterday. Three hits including a double. jumps all over the first pitch fast and hammers it into the netting foul down the right field line. It’s 0 and one. AJ Hinch was asked this morning. It’s like to finally get another switch hitter in your lineup, the only one. And it just creates so many matchup nightmares with the way AJ structures his lineup on a daily basis for that opposing manager at the L1. This one floated in the air behind home plate, giving chase as Freddy Fine to catch, but he’ll run out of room as that one bounces in the high rent district. No, it’s it’s dynitter, especially the way the game is set up now. When you have a switch hitter that can do something right-handed, it is such a matchup problem for the opposing manager. who run against teams this year that have had two, three, and I believe at one point four in the lineup at one time and it just prevents matchup problems for the manager. The O2 on Perez. It’s fouled back to the screen. We’ll do it once again. Some guys aren’t that. You know, they’re switchers on paper, but effectively from the right side or from one side or the other. Usually, it’s from the right side. They’re not very good. The ball carried a little further than you thought it was going to be. Yes, it did. Garcia got out in front of that slider right there and back spun it. Lenzo was on it. Made the adjustment in the play. Brings up Mark Cana. Pinch it yesterday and then ended up remaining in the ball game went 0 for two. Tiger injury report is brought to you by McLaren Health official healthcare system of the Detroit Tigers. First pitch to Mark Cana taken a called strike and it’s 0 and one. One guy that might not be on the injured list much longer. We saw him today. Sawyer Gibson Long. Yeah. The one this is in the sinker count evens up at a ball in a strike. Yes. Nice outings from Sawyer Gibson long at the end of the 23 season. Hurt almost the entire season last year, not all of it. Coming off of two major surgeries with the arm and the hip. a one-1. This one popped up behind the plate and that one will reach the seats. It’s one and two. Yeah. One thing with Sawyer Gong, you know, obviously we don’t know the plans for him once he is fully ready to go and come off. I would imagine he has to spend some time in TripleA just almost entire year away. Missed all all of 24 just being back in the competitive juices and nature of the game again. One two from Scubble. this one. He saw him off in on the hand. Scuba will pick it on the comebacker and flip underhanded to Spencer Torson at first. That was filthy. That was just a absolute attitude heater at 98 in. Sawed off Mark Cana. A little bit of a playful glare. would imagine it might be a text message for two [Laughter] centame regard in the kitchen that time. Yeah, he was in there. Here’s Nick Loftton. Two outs and the base is empty as Scooble winds and fires and a wave and a miss on a slider. I mean, every time you you look down at a stat sheet, you think, how can you not be more impressed? And the 01 taking a called strike and he quickly works ahead of loft and nothing and two. Peter Chase had a good nugget in the game notes today. Last five starts for TK Scubble. He has thrown 57 pitches of 99 miles an hour or faster. The O2 East foul at home plate in his prior six starts at a combined 19 of 99 or above. So he has dialed it up to just an unbelievably new level over his past five appearances. He’s ahead 02 with two outs. The pitch taken low change up missing just below the bottom rail. It’s one and two. You know the interesting about that G is that is the thing that when he’s out there it doesn’t look max effort. Obviously he’s giving a fair bit of effort but it’s not 1% or 100% all out every pitch. the one two is hot. Two moles, two strikes. And that’s the difference sometimes with a lot of starters and relievers. You know, people ask you all the time, there’s a lot of factors go into whether a guy can continue to start or relieve as he gets into his career. But there’s an ease of operation. It’s it’s effort. He’s he’s getting after it, but it’s not like he’s just out of control out. The 2-2 check, swing called. Strike three. Second strike out of the day for Scooble. He has gone six up, six down to start his outing. We’re on to the third. No score. for Tigers and Royals. Here are the Detroit Tigers Radio Network presented by Meyer. Top of the third, Dylan Dingler, Trey Sweeney, and Jav Bayz up for the Tigers against Michael Walka. Both starters have gone six up, six down. Walka struck out the side in the second. Dingler good day yesterday on base four times. Three for three at the plate with a walk. Crushed his fifth home run of the year. One of the three home runs Tigers hit yesterday as the first pitch is fouled back to the screen. It’s 0 and one. Yeah, healthy grip at that sinker down too. He’s ready to hit. He’s not going up there looking for a walk. Doesn’t walk a lot. That’s already been chronicled, but he hit the ball hard a lot. So good for the one. Bingler shoots this one up the line at first and into the dugout suite. Foul. It’s nothing and two. Since the start of last season, Michael Wonka has allowed three runs or fewer in 34 of his 40 starts for Kansas City. The O2 slider misses away. It’s a bowl and two strikes. There’s only been two other pitchers in the big leagues that have as the one two swung on and fouled away. Only two other starters in the big leagues. One of them is on the mound today and Terrick Scubel and Garrick Crochet as the other two starting pitchers who have allowed three runs or fewer in that span. Scubble has done it 35 times. Crochet 38. the one two up and inside on Dingler count goes even two balls and two strikes the course of his career he’s been a horse he goes to the post several years of 30 plus starts several years high 20s and he stays healthy yes he does the twoler breaks his bat as he fouls off an inside sinker that game brought to you in part by Meyer official partner of the Detroit Tigers. Tigers remain on the road going into next week. They will have a four-game series at the Chicago White Socks before returning home for a big series against the Chicago Cubs next weekend. Always nice when you see the PR account putting out that there are limited tickets remaining for a weekend series at Kria Park. Absolutely love that. Two-2 from Walka. Dingler pops it up middle of the infield. Salvador Perez fights the sun, makes the catch. Dingler retired. One down. I think it’s pretty evident with some of the swings we have seen from Tiger hitters today. Michael Wonka not afraid to pitch inside. No, he’s not. He’s going to go in there and and one thing with him, very high arm angle, 51 degrees. What does that mean? You don’t see a lot of guys with that high arm angle. Kind of the the trend in the game is for to creep down in that three quarter. That’s true overhand right there. Trey Sweeney will swing and miss at a change up at the bottom of the zone. It’s 0 and one. You got a high arm angle. Walk is a big man 6’7 in extension that’s above average. He’s really driving that ball down and he that fast plays up and he can go in there effectively. The one swinging strike on an upstairs cutter. Sweeny’s in a hole 0 and two. Trey only got one at bat yesterday. Went 0 for one. Comes in hitting 229 with four homers. It’s a no ball two strike count on Trey Sweeney. Top of the third, no score. Tigers and Royals. Middle game of the series. Tigers have taken four of the first five meetings in the season series. The O2 upstairs. ball in two strikes. Waka on the one-two pitch. Got him looking. Strike three call. That sinker is zipping around today for Michael Wonka. That’s really Trey Sweeney. Just got to hang with him on that one cuz he got sequenced very nicely there. First two pitches they at bat swing and miss on that cutter end. Dart off the plate in towards him. Shows him the fast ball up for show. Changes the eye level. Then throws a sinker down and away and nails that outside corner. That’s that’s just tough. Some days it’s like that. Here’s Jav Bayz. Two outs and the base is empty. First pitch to Bayz way outside on a slider and takes ball one. I think Bobby too that sequencing is very underrated when you look at a pitcher and a lot of times young pitchers when they advance to the minor leagues get to the big leagues that’s one thing they struggle with is Jav swings and misses a change up right out over the plate it’s one and one but once you learn how to sequence that’s really when you can take your game to the next level 100% agree absolutely the 1-1 fights this one off foul into the seats on the first side and it’s one and two. And here’s the reason for that. Because a lot of especially guys with high power, high octane stuff when they’re at the lower level, you can beat teams, you know, if you’re in West Michigan some nights, you can beat Fort Wayne with one pitch, just be better with the fast. One, two. Jav swing, sends a line drive out to center on his horse is Dyron Blanco and he will track it down at the warning track and make the catch to retire the side. Michael Walka perfect through three. We head to the bottom of the third inning. No score. Tigers and Royals here in the home of Detroit Tigers baseball presented by Meyer. Let’s see if we can figure out the following baseball slang term. Today’s phrase is oppo taco. Do you know what it means? Oppo taco. A home run hit to the opposite field. Austin with an oppo taco. No score here in the bottom of the third. Tigers and Royals. Ter Scubble back to work. Starts off the lone lefty in this lineup. Mini Pass Quentino with a cold strike on the outside edge, starting him with a sinker. Derek Perfect through the first two. He rocks and offers on the 01. Swing and a miss. Sinker upstairs is ahead 0 and2 on Pascantino. Pascantino a one for three day yesterday did walk twice in the game. Her baseman by his way off the line. Sweeny shaded up the middle as they play Pascino to pull the pitch. Got him. Swinging strike three. Quickly dispatches of Vinnie Pascantino on three pitches to Scooble for his third strike out of the game. Yeah, ain’t no tricks there. That’s just high octane gas. Three sinkers. one dotted down and away and then beat him up in the zone with two 96 and 97 mph fast balls. That’s just that’s tough right there. Here’s Freddy Firmine, Brailles catcher comes in riding a four-ame hitting streak. Day off yesterday. Scubble delivers his first pitch. Misses up and that’s ball one. even with the bag at third infield straight away. The one on for me taken outside and Scubble falls behind. Two balls and no strikes. Scubble just one of those pitchers that every time he takes the mound something special could It’s very true. Two and0. The count on for me the pitch. Swinging strike on a sinker up and it’s two and one. Is there ever a guy you had his number? Going back to the whole Salvador Perez, Terry Scubel 2-1 inside three and one on for me. Well, for clarity, I didn’t have a whole lot of numbers in the big leagues. I will tell you a little bit about but you had enough time in TripleA and in the big leagues. To be honest with you, the guy I got my first base hit off of Tim Lindicum 3-1 swinging strike two on a sinker. As good as he was and and and the Sai Youngs, I always saw him well. caught him for a brief glimpse when he was in TripleA and I was in TripleA and then a few years later when I finally made my big league debut, he’s coming off a Sai Young award win in 2008 and I got my first base hit off of him in the big leagues and then I think I ended up being two for six off of him. Uh so I don’t know about all that. The whole ownership thing is is really loose there. 3-2 swinging a line drive right field. That’s the first hit of the game for Kansas City. Elevated fast ball and Fine took it the other way. Yeah, good swing from for me. It was a fast ball for Semir left out out over the plate. Just a clean solid single to the right side. The first base runner for either side today comes on a for me knock. Now Dyron Blanco is the batter. Nobody out or rather one out. Man on first. First pitch taken for a strike on a change up and it’s an 0 and1 count. Figure we’re going to see a lot of change ups today from TK Scubble with this right-handed heavy Kansas City lineup. Opponent’s hitting 174 off of Scubble’s change this season. He kicks and offers on the 01 change up tap foul. It’s nothing and two. Blanco had to go down to get that ball. Blanco limited playing time this season right at the tail end of spring training. He was put on the injured list. Y2 taken up right Achilles tendonopathy. Never heard of that. That’s a new one for me. We have to We’re going to have to WebMD that one as well. Is that still a thing? WebMD. I think so. One and two. The count on Blanco. Runner on first is for me. Scooble on the belt kicks and fires upstairs with a fast ball. Evens it up. Two balls and two strikes. Right-handers this season hitting 194 off of Scubble’s change up rather 197. Scubble a long hold. Deals the two. Swinging strike three on the change up. Strike out number four for Scooble. Two outs and a man on. Flips the line up to the top for Jonathan India. Here, let me show you four seamers and sinkers at 97 98 all over the zone and then pulled the string at 88 with good sink down and away from the right-handed hitter. That’s just not fair right there to Blanco. Not a whole lot of what TK does is fair to opposing hitters. No. Jonathan India grounded out to Jav Bayz in the first inning. First pitch from Scubble. It’s taken for a strike and it’s 0 and one. 50% whiff rate on his change this season. That’s pretty good. That’s really good. Scubble looks at the runner at first. Deals on the 01. Taken. A called strike. Nothing in two. Always enjoy Terrick Scubel starts on the road, too, because everybody’s locked in and you just hear this murmur. Yeah. Every time he does something on the mound. Absolutely. You’re right about that. Two outs and a man on first. Scoreless third inning. Tigers and Royals. Jonathan India the batter. Scubble stretches out the belt. Looks at the runner. Deals on the O2. Got him looking. Strike three called. Painted the inside corner with a sinker. Three strikeouts in the inning for Ter Scooble. He’s got five in the game. We head to the top of the fourth. No score. Tigers and Royals here on the Detroit Tigers Radio Network presented by Meyer. At Home America Bank, we’re creating opportunity for small businesses. The one-1 popped up left side of the infield. Bobby Wit Jr. calling for it with his feet on the infield dirt. Backs up into the outfield. Makes the catch. Carpenter retired. One down. Pause for station identification here on the Detroit Tigers radio network. One down. Glabber Torres will back. Takes a called strike. Torres flew out to the right fielder Mark Cana in the first inning. No score. Tigers and Royals here in the top of the fourth. Here’s the L1 taken. A called strike. Nothing into the count. Torres hitless in the series. did walk twice yesterday. The O2 from Waka misses upstairs. So Bobby, you did forget about one guy that you did own, but it was in Japan. Yeah, it came to me during the break, but I had a pretty good run against the pretty good pitcher over here in the States to start his career over there. Uh Masahro Tanaka, the one two down and in. Two balls and two strikes on Glbert Torres. It was fun. It was uh obviously before he posted and came and end up with the Yankees, but uh pitched for a team called Wreckit 10 over there. They were in the same division we were with Deon Ham and Orics. It’s good baseball there. It’s fun. If you’re a big baseball fan, it’s trip and it’s expensive, but 22 Torres pounds it into the ground foul as Joey Cora limos out of the way. If I’m not mistaken, they have they have different kinds of tours where they can, you know, you end up going over there and taking in the sights of fans in the game. It’s fun. It’s a real baseball lover’s trip. Two balls, two strikes. Pitch to Torres. Breaking ball. Misses away. Counts full. Torres gives you quality at bats every time he steps in the box. It is amazing. They’re talking about it before the game today. He’s sort of that old school player where he gets really mad at himself when he strikes out. Yeah, he does not like it. You know, you hear some of the guys talk about, you hear the coaches talk about how just his disdain for striking out and it’s not just he’s not just looking up there choking poke take it the other way. He still wants to impact the baseball but 3-2 and that misses low and in. It’s ball four. So first Tiger base runner of the game comes on a Glabber Torres walk brings up Colt Keith. Really nice at bat as usual from Glabber Torres. Took the change up down just missed. took it with confidence. Thought he might get another cutter slider away after him pound after Waka pounding him in and using the top of the strike zone. It’s now 28 walks for Glaver to 22 strikeouts. Colt Keith swings the first pitch, sends it in the air to right. Arcana coming in on it, fighting the sun. Makes the catch. Colts 0 for two. Two gone for Riley Green. Yeah, keep if you’re a base runner, you find your way on base, you have to keep your feet alive as you make the appropriate actions out there. That time, Labor Torres was halfway, but Mark Hannah fought the sun right there. You see him squatting down, getting to an angle to try to make sure he found it as it came out of the sun. It’s going to affect center and right field right now. Entire field is engulfed in the sunshine as Riley Green swings and misses at a change up. Sun is behind us currently. Three tiers of seating here at Kaufman Stadium with a roof overhang. The 01 green fouls it away. Another change up. It’s nothing and two. Is a guy who will feature that change up regularly, especially to these left-handed Tiger hitters. No score here in the fourth. Flavor Torres walked with one out. He’s at first now with two outs. Fermine sets up away. Waka on the O2. Mean takes it down and away off the glove of Fine, but he was able to keep it in front and keep that runner at first base. Yeah, that sinker change up combination for Waka again with his arm angle. The way he gets his extension is extremely difficult. It’s it a lot of times when you see that thing coming into the strike zone, you have it at one point and then because he can drive down with use the angle makes it very difficult to track. The one two fights it off foul. Smash the like button on this broadcast. It helps us grow and lets more fans like you discover the channel. WBC the show keeps going strong thanks to your support. Nothing to the count. Royals did have action in their bullpen in the top half of this inning. Tigers getting their first hit of the game and a cold key face hit up the middle. Scubble ahead of Whit. O and two the pitch. Swinging a ground ball right side. Glber Torres sliding into it. He picks it up onto first. What a play by Glaver Torres to get the lead runner or to get the first out of the inning rather. Oh, that’s a fantastic play. Bobby Whit Jr. hit this ball off the end of the bat. Just a squibber slow developing and Whit can fly. It gets down the line. Blabber comes up, piouetses over that left shoulder and throws a strike to Torque at first base. Just getting him. He puts so much pressure on the defense when he leaves the box. Gets out of the box so fast for a right-handed hitter. Here’s Salvador Perez 0 for two. Scubble delivers. Swinging strike. Challenged him up and away with a fast ball. Two and one. Major League from the right side is 4-3. That was a jailbreak. He was out front a little bit. So he was leaving as he was hitting the ball. Looks like he’s going to be done for the day. I believe that’s the right hander Clark that’s continued to throw. It’s a one ball, two strike count on Salvador Perez. Scubble fires, swung on, hit in the air to left. Back of the ball is Riley Green. He’s got room. He’s under it. He’ll make the catch. Two down. The slider down and in that time. Two outs here in the seventh. Mike Garcia. Salvi still dangerous. Not having the year he had a year ago, but you still got to respect him. Nice job by TK to get him out. Two out, seventh inning. Garcia the hitter. First pitch swung on, popped foul behind the net into the seats. It’s 0 and one. Garcia hasn’t extended it. Scoo’s going to try to make sure he doesn’t, but came in riding a MLB best 14game hitting streak, hitting .407 in that span. And the 01 taken down and away. He is having some kind of year. D inning is brought to you by Hatfield Foods for pork on your fork. Wel Perez will lead it off. And we’ve got a new pitcher for Kansas City with this pitching change presented by Primitive official CBD relief partner of the Detroit Tigers. John Shriber, the one time Tiger takes the mound. First pitch to Wel Perez is taken for a strike. He’s 0 for two. has twice struck out today. Yeah, Shriber, that low threequarter arm slot. Not quite sidearm, but that’s a very low threequarters. Four pitch mix two and four seam fast ball sweeper and a cutter. Uses them all just about a quarter of the time. The one taken up and away. Count goes even out of a ball in a strike. Final line on Michael Waka. No runs on one hit a walk in six Ks in seven innings. Triber last pitched on the 28th. Two/3s of an inning scoreless against the Cincinnati Reds. The 1-1 swinging strike two up and away cutter and two strikes the count on Perez. Driver fires, fouls this one back. Perez, Dylan Dingler, and Trey Sweeney here in the Tigers eighth. Neither team in this game has had a runner in scoring position. Ball and two strikes to count. The pitch pops it up left side of the infield. Backing up on it is Mikel Garcia. He’ll make the catch and lead off man retired in the Tiger eighth. Here’s Dylan Dingler has twice popped out to the first baseman. Salvador Perez Shriber because of that low threequarter arm slot gets excellent action on that two seamer but even on the force fast balls he throws he’ll get some armside run to it. One out base is clear. Pitch to Dingler. Swung on. Hit in the air to right charging over towards the line. Mark Cana and he will slide near the tarp. Can’t make the catch. Let’s pause for station identification here on the Detroit Tigers radio network. And out top of the eighth inning, Dylan Dinglers in an 01 hole. Get a check of that out of town scoreboard from the 1800 Cole Sam Studios. Once more with a 4-2 lead over the White Socks in the seventh. Angels up 5-3 on Cleveland in the sixth. The 01. Dingler shoots it in the air down the right field line. Can a long run again and again foul into the netting. This time it’s 0 and2. But this one not a good day for the Philadelphia pitching staff. They’re down 17-2 to the Milwaukee Brewers. It’s in the sixth. I was going to say it’s in the sixth. They got nine outs left. That’s with a seven to1 lead on the Rockies. That’s in the seventh. Tampa up 9-3 on Houston in the seventh. Miami’s got a one- nothing lead on San Francisco. Tampa’s up 9-3 on Houston. Both of those in the seventh inning as well. 7:15 start. Minnesota is at Seattle. Jason Benedetti will have that call. That’s right. Oh, and two on Dingler. Driver deals. outside. Boy, I thought when the whole plane umpire stood up, I thought he was going to ring up Dingler. He didn’t. Nate Tomlinson looked for all the world he was going to pull that string on that right with that right hand and he didn’t. I think it probably was a strike. The one, two, lays off. Another one hits the top of the zone. Not called. It’s two and two. I mean, he really and truly could have called that one a strike as well. That’s right on that top rail. So, Dingler has taken two very close pitches. It’s a two ball, two strike count. The pitch from Shriber. Dingler fouls it away. Stays alive and the count remains at two balls and two strikes. Another solid at bat. No score in the eighth. Triber coming set. Deals on the 2-2. Dingler fights off another fast ball straight back. We’ll do it again at two and two. Here is action again in the Tiger bullpen. Two balls, two strikes on Dingler. Triber delivers low and away. Runs it full. Will see at least eight pitches here. Stayed with the four seamer. A little surprised he hasn’t gone with that cutter. That breaking ball away. He went over the middle of the plate right here. We’ll count on Dylan Dingler. Triber with the payoff and it’s outside in ball four. Dylan Dingler walking. That’s a heck of an at bat for Dylan Dingler. It sure is. Took some close pitches. Went his way. Fouled off some other tough pitches. Finds his way to first base with one out here in the eighth inning. So opportunity knocking. Runner on first. One out. Trey Sweeney is 0 for two. Triber delivers and that fast comes back over the inside corner of the plate for a called strike one. And with the man at first Perez holds him on. Driver from the belt. The 01 pitch high and outside it up and a bowl in a strike. Royals with action again in their bullpen. One and one the count. Drivers from 15 pitches as Sweeney pounds this one into the ground. Foul. A nice little one-handed grab by the bat boy. It’s one and two. That brisky on the Tiger. I think it may be. Yeah, I feel like that’s see a single digit on the back there. Solen two strikes on Sweeney. Dingler the man at first. The pitch. Sweeny swings and misses. That’s strike three. Two down. Triber broke out the sweeper there. Pretty good pitch. Starts well off the plate. Ends up outer third. Trey Sweeney swings right through it for strike three. It’s a tough pitch. Hadn’t seen one of those in the at bat to this point. He breaks it out right there. It’s a pretty good one. Two outs for Jav Bayz. It’s flown to center. Grounded to short. Triber delivers. Up and away. Ball one and partner. That one in the zone. Triber just not getting some calls. No. One and0 the count on Jav Bayz. Dingler a short lead. Driver delivers. Swinging a foul straight back. Oh, he was on that fast ball, wasn’t he? Pass at that one. Boy, it was inner third. A fast ball to 95 miles an hour right there. It’s to your point, partner. He’s Tomlinson strike zone has gotten a little bit shorter from the top down. One and one. The count on Bay. Pitch taken a called strike on a sinker. Bayas disagreeing with it. One and two. That’s a pretty good pitch. Throws that two seamer off the plate. Come back sinker. Runs back over that outside edge. That was in the strike zone. No score. Eighth inning. Shriber steps off. That’ll be the first disengagement. ball and two strikes to count on Jav Bayz. Shriber kicks and fires, swinging a miss on a high fast basketball. Back-to-back strikeouts for Shriber, ending the Tiger eighth. We go to the bottom half. This one sent in the air to left. Going back to the ball, Riley Green. It’s over his head. One off the base of the wall. Loftton heads to second and he’s in with a stand up double. Nick Loftton has two of the three Royal hits. And the first time today we’ve got a runner in scoring position. Yeah, that’s a fast ball in. Just caught too much of the plate. It was a line drive. Beats Riley Green over his head. Actually a little bit fortunate right there. Hit the chain link. We talked about that yesterday during the broadcast. There’s a lot of sessions of chain link in padding. That hit the chain link. Kind of killed it. The bounces back past Riley, but Loftton only gets the double on second here with one out. Saved a run earlier with a nice diving play in left. He’s got two of the three Kansas City hits in this one. He’s off second. The 1-1. Fouled back to the net. Basketball up and away. And Frisky works ahead of Pasquantino at a ball and two strikes. got a good swing at that pitch. It was on the outer edge. Well fast ball, but it was up. More action in the Tigers pen. Frisky fires this one line left field. That’s a base hit. Charging Riley Green heading to third. Being sent home. Loftton rallies through to the plate. Not in time. Ascertino an RBI single. produces the game’s first run here in the bottom of the eighth inning. That ball is off the plate away. A ball and a half, maybe two balls off the plate away. Pass Quantino sticks the barrel of the bat out there. Hits a hardline drive on one hop to Riley Green. Vance Wilson at third base coach for Royals had zero intention of stopping Loftton and he slides in safe ahead of the throw. RBI single for Pasquantino. Here is Freddy Ferine. One- nothing Royals lead it in the eighth. For me takes low and in. That’s a ball. Yeah, the throw was a little up the line at first, but when the throw got there, he was already at home plate. Oh, no. Strikes on for me. Frisky delivers hit in the air to left. Green and Wel Perez converging in the alley. Wel says he’s got it. He does. Two outs. When that ball left the bat of past Quentino, he thought maybe because it was hit so hard. That one hop skip would get it would get to Riley so quickly he’d have a chance to throw him out the plate, but that was not the case. Partner looking ahead to the ninth inning.
