Jamie Benn Discusses Dallas Stars Future, WCF Losses vs. Oilers & Wanting to Retire With Dallas
[Applause] Jamie, uh, tough end of the year obviously for all you guys. Uh, Pete was mentioning just before he came in here about your leadership even having to play kind of a different little bit of a different role in the game. What was the what was this playoff run kind of like for you being in a little bit of a different position? Um, you know, it’s uh different at times, uh, difficult at times, but um, you know, the playoffs are all about um, you know, team first and making sacrifices and and doing what’s best for the team. And um you know as my role changed a little bit um you know that was my mindset is what that it this was what was best for the team and um you know it was my job to just go out there and and try and do my job and do it uh the best I could. After game five, you said you haven’t made any decisions about your playing future. I guess what are the considerations that go into whether you’re prepared to go into another season? Um, I mean, I’m going to go into the summer, uh, planning on on playing next year and, um, you know, prepare like, uh, I do every summer, um, like I’m going to play. First time you’ve gone into an offseason without a contract in a long time. How do you hope that process plays out and the timing and everything? Um, you know, I don’t, uh, I don’t know. It’d be interesting. Um, you know, I’m I’m looking forward to it to be honest. Um, you know, I don’t see myself going uh anywhere else. Uh, this is all I know. So, uh, hopefully we can get something figured out and um, then I don’t have to answer these questions. You and Jim had both said before season the focus was on winning and we would talk about, so I’m assuming none of that has changed. Yeah. No, that’s uh you know that’s the goal around here. Um you know it’s all about winning and you know I think now uh you know we’ve been to the same spot three years in a row and um you know it’s about you know how can we make that next step um you know to get into the finals um you know cuz we’re you know we’re tired of losing uh in the Western Conference Finals. What would it mean for you to be able to have your entire career here, drafted by this team? You grew up here basically. What would that mean to you to be able to uh a lot um you know, like I said, this is all I know. Um you know, I’ve came in as a young kid and um you know, now getting a little older here. So um you know, I love the city, I love the fans, I love this organization. Um you know, I love my teammates. So hopefully we can uh figure something out. You seem focused game to game whenever we talk to you. How hard is it to try and say this is what happened over the last three years. This is what we need to change. Are you a part of that as far as saying this is how we do things different going forward? Um I mean I think communication is um you know such a big part for a team um our organization. I mean we’re always trying to get better around here. um you know so there’s going to be uh you know definitely some uh internal talks of um you know what we need to do to get to that next step. Do you feel like you know you’ve been to the Western Conference final three years in a row, but do you feel like you’re you’re getting closer to taking a step or do you feel like maybe there’s another gear you guys can um I mean there’s obviously needs to be another gear. um you know cuz we haven’t um you know took that step in in 3 years um you know obviously we don’t want to take a step backwards and I we haven’t been doing that um you know so it’s what can we do to to make that next step now and um you know I think it’s on us as players to you know to talk about it um you know throughout the summer make sure we’re all doing the right things over the next uh couple months here to um you know make sure we do take that next step next year. Jamie, you’ve been through plenty of long seasons, playoff runs with this group. This one had a lot of ups and downs with it. What have you learned about this group? Uh you know, not only just through the playoffs, but probably all year. Um you know, it was a fun group to to play with. Uh you know, we had a lot of fun this year and uh we’re resilient. you know, it seemed like um every time we got pushed, we we pushed back. Um obviously this last series against Edmonton, um you know, it didn’t go our way, but um you know, we had uh you know, a lot of guys dig in and and you know, take uh take on a bigger roles. Um you know, that helped us win a lot of hockey games. He said he liked what Nico showed in the leadership department in the short time here. What have you seen from him? He is it does seem he’s very diffusive as opposed to the other fins. He seems to be very vocal and kind of mixed with everybody. Yeah, he’s uh little different than the other fins. Um, you know, in in a good way. Uh, you know, I think uh it’s it’s never easy coming into a new team. um you you don’t want to step on toes and um maybe feel uh like you should be a little bit more quiet or or whatnot, but um you know, he’s different. He’s uh you know, he had a voice right from day one. Um and and I think he should. Uh he’s a guy that’s been there and done that. Um, you know, it’s somebody uh who we all respect and uh you know, he’s going to be a big leader for this group uh moving forward. Jamie, just in sports in general, getting over the humps so difficult, a team making the playoffs for the first time, winning their first playoff series, getting over the hump, getting the Stanley Cup, can you compare kind of getting over those different humps, and is it more frustrating because you guys are that close? Um, yeah. I think it probably gets uh it’s more disappointing um the closer you get and the older you get. Um you know I think uh hikes you probably know the numbers the year first year we made the playoffs here maybe 13 14 or something. Um you know that was exciting for for our group and um I think we lost in the first round. Um, but it it just puts a little fire in your belly, you know, to wanting more and and you know, winning is uh it’s addictive and uh a lot of fun. Um, you know, it’s hard work, but the more you win, uh, the more you want it. And um you know that’s why when you you get to this point three years in a row um you know I don’t uh make the finals um you know it’s it puts a fire in your belly and and you just want it more. Jamie, can you talk about your relationship with Pete Debor and how you’ve grown with him as your head coach? Uh yeah it’s good. Um, you know, Pete’s been a a great coach, um, you know, for this team and, uh, I got a great relationship with him. I think, um, you know, a head coach, captain relationship, um, can uh, sometimes be a little different um, than other players because there’s a lot of communication um, going on, you know, trying to get fuels for the room and and the guys. and um you know we’ve had a great relationship and um you know probably continue that going forward here. Pete has said and other players that have been in this room and then moved on have said that you’re one of the best leaders in the league. when you hear praise like that, it wasn’t mean about I guess your legacy here outside of just the winning aspect of it, but just what influence you’ve had on this organization here. Uh, you know, I just try to lead uh by example by doing the right things all the time. Um, you know, I got to learn from a lot of great leaders and uh older veterans. Um, you know, got to learn from from great people. I think it starts at the top with with Jim Nil. Um, you know, kind of preaching um to always do the right things and um, you know, I I like to think I care about my players and um, you know, just try to guide them in the right direction. And you’ve seen the end of Brennan Mororrow’s time here, Joe, the end of Joe Pvelski’s career. Great leaders in their own rights. Is there anything that you’ve learned from them and watching how they handled the end of their career that’s helped you as you navigate these kind of unknown waters now? Uh yeah, I mean um you know Brendan was obviously my first captain and um you know someone I uh clung on to uh you know I wanted to be just like him and um you know I thought he was uh like a superhero. So um you know I got to learn from him and and you know still do uh still talk quite a bit and then Pav uh you know I think right till the very end Pav was uh you know teaching um inspiring uh he was such a good player, such a good person and leader. Um you know he really did a lot for our group and um you know obviously Wyatt Johnson as well um you know kind of teaching them the ropes. Jamie, when you end a season, like you said, it’s always, you know, frustrating and disappointing that it doesn’t end the way you want. This year’s a little different. You go home and you have a wife and a child waiting for you at home. What’s that experience mixing that frustration with also that part of life? Um, well, I think they say never take work home. Uh, that’s uh something I try to uh to not do, but it’s hard uh sometimes, but um a lot of fun. uh you know, walking in that door and and seeing my wife and and kid and uh trying to decompress from uh you know, this game. Okay. [Music]
