Welcome to the Saint Squad, part of the Lock on Podcast Network, your team every day. Thank you for making us your first listen every Monday and Thursday. We have a unique group of experts here ready to bring you a fun and informative show on everything New Orleans Saints. Today we’re going to be diving into a Kool-Aid McKinstry season preview. We’re going to pick some players that we think are going to be better off in the new systems. Kellen Moore, Brandon Staley, and then of course we’re going to jump straight into some OTAA recaps, the biggest things we learned from there. And let’s start on the offensive side and let’s start with John. Well, I think when I think about the OTAAS, man, it was another good session. I mean, it’s only the second time we’ve seen the full team and all that other stuff, but you know, look, it’s got to be the quarterbacks. That’s what I said that was going to be the number one thing that we pay attention to. And they delivered. Look, I I think, you know, with Spencer Rattler, he had a really nice day going 10 to 12. He had some really good hookups doing some ad libing. Hit, you know, Chris Ave on a route where Elante, he was locked up pretty good at first, but he got through and got free and he gets a nice little catch on the sideline and then of course a nice little hook over to Jawan Johnson and then gets some Rasheed Shahit action where he sails something over the defender. And so I I really like that. But look, Tyler Shuck stole the show in terms of highlights. Two big touchdowns. uh you know, of course he got picked at the end of the OTAAS, but look, those big touchdown passes, I think when you look at that offense, man, it was just exciting to see a he was taking shots and b that they were connecting. And so, uh, look, I I I know this is going to be all about quarterbacks. And I kind of floated. I was like, what if they got two good quarterbacks out of this thing? And I just can’t wait to see more football, but everybody’s got to kind of like, let’s let’s dial it back a little bit. This is just OTAAS, right? But at the same time, it is exciting. It is promising. And for fans, look, you want to just see more of it. And I can’t wait till they get to mini camp and all that other stuff because they’re going to be able to see it firsthand. Well, I mean, Tyler Chuck threw an interception in front of media in the med in front of the media. So, it is Spentler Rattler’s job, I think, right now. Spitler. Spitler. Spitler. Spitler. Rattler. Spitler. Rattler. Spitler. Rrestler. Uh Ross. What did you What What are some other big takeaways you had from the offensive side of the ball? Yeah. I mean, like the John’s right. This is all about the quarterbacks. I I will mention one other throw from Tyler Shuck real quick because I think it’s the throw that a lot of people are talking about that isn’t even the big like down the field throws that he had. There was the one that, you know, was included, the big touchdown above means that was on the uh the Saints kind of hype video, but he had another one where he was rolling to the left side of the field and then unccorked this weird arm angle. Remember, he’s a right-handed thrower. He’s working the opposite side of the field. Uncorked kind of this weird arm angle throw that was put in position for really only Cedric Wilson to grab it. uh a guy whose name you’ve heard a lot on this show, uh Danny Stsman, thanks to our good friend Lance Moore here, uh ended up being in good enough position uh to still make the stop or or do enough to to to rack what I would call maybe like a a a pass defended as opposed to a PBU, right? Uh and you know, but it was that type of situation to where you saw him kind of get off script a little bit that I thought, you know, brought a little bit of the excitement. But the other thing that I’ll highlight too is right in front of the quarterback on the offensive line. No changes on the offensive line, which it’s early, but it’s still a good sign. I a asked uh Kell Moore about the uh you know, no change on the offensive line. Trevor Penning still at left guard. Kelvin Banks still at left tackle. Tella still at right tackle. And I kind of just wanted to know like is that because you’re is that indicative of what you’ve seen so far that you’re happy with it or is it you know are we starting are we just missing some of the rotation with media not being present every day because he did say early on that all throughout OTAAS and mini camps that they were going to rotate and we have not seen said rotation at this point. So maybe he meant during the offseason process not specifically OTAAS. Uh but if nothing else he seems pretty impressed with what he’s seen from Trevor Penning so far. no contact, no full speed stuff and everything like that. But I mean, look, if he’s if he’s learning the position, if he’s not having the memes or the mental errors and things like that, there’s still a way for him to trend upwards even without that. And so, it’s good to see that there’s not like at least any kind of emergency, oh, we got to get that guy out of there kind of mentality coming from the team. That that’s that’s a solid showing on Trevor Penning’s part. And even just and honestly, I’ll say this too, even just seeing Trevor Penning in the locker room, like carrying himself a lot more confidently. So, I think that says a lot, too. They had the uh O line like the second and third teams. They had swaps there. That was the only type of swaps that they made, you know, but other than that, you know, I I don’t expect it to change much. I don’t expect them to to move Trevor Penning at this point. So, I I think he’s there to stay at left guard until he’s not at left guard. It’s great news for them. Well, look, and and imagine the amount of stress that somebody would have to live with being a first round pick and everybody for the last three plus years calling you a bust. He can’t play left tackle. He now he can’t all of a sudden can’t play right tackle. We’ve got two brand new tackles over the last two drafts. And then for a a comparable uh coach or a coach that that I would say, you know, coming off a Super Bowl championship kind of knows a little bit about what he’s doing here offensively specifically, hey, you’ve got skills. I’ve seen you play. Let’s try you at left guard. And for him, I would imagine getting over there and being like, okay, now this is where I’m going to play. There’s not there’s not any indecision or question about a position for him to start off. I think he’d be breathing a sigh of relief this whole entire off seasonason and he should be carrying himself with a whole different level of confidence and look at this as man. This isn’t just a new opportunity, but this is potentially the best opportunity for me here to not just make the team and be on the field, but to be a big-time contributor at a position of need for this offensive line, right? Like that that that left guard position was going to be open no matter what happened in the draft, right? Unless we drafted a guard early and we did not do that. So, um I I think he should be carrying himself like that. And and I am definitely one of those guys that thinks, you know, if you’ve got a first round guy that has shown at least some ability and then he’s got nastiness to go along with said ability, why would you not, you know, like turn every stone to give this guy an opportunity to be a contributor for you on offense? And and look, I’m I if it was a six offensive lineman or big tight end or whatever it was, I’m sure he would, you know, he’s getting paid, so he would do it. But I think that being able to get new life at the left guard position for him is is a big deal. Um and I think he’s going to make the most of that opportunity. I I think, you know, you mentioned the fact that they haven’t rotated and they don’t really need to rotate, right? Like what are you going to see from guys in non-conted practices? And for those of you who’ve never been to an OTAA, which none of our listeners have, I wouldn’t imagine, unless they’re former media members, like there’s contact, right? But it’s not the same as when you’ve got pads on, when you’ve got, you know, full blitz and and rush packages going in. So there there is a little bit of physicality and athletic movements that still take place. It’s not like the offense and defensive linemen are standing up and taking one step and stopping, right? like they’re rushing, the offensive linemen are protecting. So, he’s getting a little bit of a feel without the physicality. And I think that’s great for him, you know, as he as you know, the offseason pushes along and then we move ahead to to training camp when the pads come on. Um, I think he’ll be more than ready to kind of take that position and make it his own and and and hold on to it the entire season. Yeah. Two followup things. I’m sorry. My bad, Dylan. I don’t mean to do that. I just wanted to touch on these two things that first first of all I hate doing that to Dylan. I really do. And and you know and you know what and you know what John what I was going to say was a joke and that it doesn’t work anymore. Well, we’re going to actually have some stuff to talk about. But in any rate, the first thing is that, you know, I I think where Trevor Penning has a little bit of leg up here is the fact that, you know, with the Eagles last year, they identified Mai Beckton late later in the process to move him to left guard. So, I think this is advantageous for Trevor Penning, first of all. And then second thing I wanted to bring up was the move that they made from for Andress Pete to move from left tackle to left guard actually helped the team out a lot in a lot of ways. And so I I don’t know. Trevor Penning could have a Andress Peak trajectory. He could have a Mai Beckton trajectory. I I think that’s kind of exciting. But I think for him, for Trevor Penning, like I I feel like he’s got the tools to succeed as a left guard as a former first round pick. And you know, look, if they figure this thing out, maybe he’s a left guard in free agency. I maybe they pay him like a left guard. I don’t know. But I just want to say those two things for him he’s got going for him right now. Pete was so interesting, too, because they moved him from left tackle to left guard and then he eventually moved back to tackle his last year and it was and it looked so good at tackle that he got like a whole new contract somewhere else. I don’t think that he p it was with the Raiders and then I don’t think that he he panned out since then, but he was such an interesting sort of case study and like yeah, give him every chance they get that you can like kind of like Lance was saying. I mean, as long as long as he’s as long as he’s under contract. My bad, Dylan. But but I mean as long as here I love it. I love it. Sometimes Dylan needs a little bit of break from us and I don’t blame him. That’s right. What were you gonna say though, Lance? Go. The floor is yours, Dylan. Oh, okay. Yeah, never mind. Go ahead, Dylan. Go ahead, Dylan. I I was going to say this is exactly what I feel like OTAA should be used for. They identified early on that Trevor Pitting is they want to drive him out at left guard and there’s not any like actual drills being done right now in terms of like physicality with the offensive line. So they’re getting him into the movements and ready and used to what it’s like to be at left guard whenever it’s like are you going to like will Clap really need more of a time to you know do this at left guard? So now that they’re they’re getting him used to the spot before, you know, before it’s actually time to take meaningful offensive line drills. Yeah. Yeah. Well, and and when they’re He’s not going to be singled up too much anymore, right? Like a lot of times tackles are left on an island and sometimes he struggled out there on the edge with some of the more athletic, quicker edge rushers. He had no problem with with physicality. Guys would try to bull rush him and he usually did better against those guys. The quicker, more athletic guys kind of, you know, had their way with him at times. So, being able to kind of be boxed in, he’s got somebody on his outside. He’s got um he’s going to have Eric McCoy on his inside, one of the best centers in the National Football League. So, there’s going to be times when he’s singled up. I mean, that’s just the nature of football. But the the being singled up with guys that are super duper athletic is going to be a lot less common with him playing on the inside and he can get his hands on guys earlier from that position. I think that benefits him tremendously. The thing I I I know and I tracked throughout his entire like coming into the NFL and all this stuff that he struggled with were speed rushers to his inside shoulder. That was something he struggled with at you and I, something he struggled with early in New Orleans when he was at left tackle, was a little bit better with it at right tackle because then his outside shoulder became his inside shoulders. He was a little bit more used to that. But now, if anybody is rushing to his inside shoulder, then they’re rushing towards Eric McCoy. That’s a good situ. It’s a much better situation for him to be in. Yeah, I think they’ve also upgraded. I say I think they’ve upgraded the depth for these guys too a little bit you know with Will Clappy is playing some center so that’s a good solution but he also could play guard and then Dylan Raiden’s playing left guard so I I feel good about where their solution they got to find that eighth and ninth guy though man well coming up next maybe I’ll get a word in no promises I think you might be you should pop it off when you get your ad you’ll get your words in okay yeah okay god It’s my least favorite part of the show. But coming up next, we’re going to be talking about the defensive side of the ball. As a small business owner, your work doesn’t end when the clock gets five. Terms and conditions apply. Jumping back into it with the OTAAS, takeaways, the biggest things we learned on the defensive side of the ball. And I’m gonna just I I’ll go ahead. You better start. You better start. I’ll start. I’ll start. I’ll start. I’m gonna start raising my hand now. I got something to say. I’ll I’ll start by uh giving a shout out to Rajan Wright. That’s a that’s a defensive back that I feel like can play his way onto the team. And he, you know, he did it. He intercepted Tyler Chuck. He won the job for Spencer Rattler. Uh, and so that’s about as as as the biggest thing you could do in a one-on-one situation or a seven 70 is force a turnover really. So that’s about as as good and and the interception was, correct me if I’m wrong, but was more of a good play by Rajan Wright rather than a bad throw by Tyler Shuck. I mean, there’s two types of interceptions really. There’s one that the quarterback throws and there’s one that the defensive back forces. This one felt more like the defensive back forcing, right? I would agree with that. I think Chuck was a little late on the throw. It was a crossing route moving from one side of the field to the other. if he gets it out a little bit earlier then maybe easy for me to say though I’m not looking at it from Tyler Shuck’s vantage point I’m on the sideline right where I belong and so that’s so I I’ll clarify that but I do think that like regardless Rajan Wright like made a great play on the ball kind of had to dive to the ground to get it had to undercut the route ended up you know putting this up and kind of showed you a little bit of you know what you need to be as a DB you got to be aggressive got to have a short memory you got to be able to do all those things I thought he did all those things so yeah I I I would agree with that. Yeah. And he made up for getting burnt earlier. You know what I’m saying? He had one of the the touchdowns against him and and so it was against Donovan Peoples Jones. So he comes back and ends it. That’s that’s what you want to see. I I think when it’s always the response of, okay, this happened before. He knew it. He took it a little bit hard and, you know, makes up for it with a good interception at the end of practice. That’s that’s that’s definitely what you want to see. Ross, I I I look, I I also think it’s a lesson for Tyler Shuck. Like this this isn’t college football anymore, right? Like and even if you’re not in with the first string defensive backs, if you are late or you leave the ball too far inside, it could be one or the other. That ball’s going the other direction, right? like this. There there are off the top of my head three quarterbacks right now probably in the NFL that can throw those types of crossing or sideline throws late. And I’m imagining Tyler Shuck is not one of those three, right? Sure. Like so, you know, you have to have like uber elite arm strength to be able to make that type of throw and for it to be late. And and I’m not saying Tyler Shook doesn’t have a strong arm, but I think that’s a it’ll be a good lesson for him as he moves forward, like, oh, okay, like maybe I should like if I’m even a millisecond late, like I I cannot let that ball go um and expect something good to happen from it. You know, I’m not saying it’s going to get picked every time, but you know, those DBs that coach CJ used to tell us all the time, those DBs get paid too now. like those guys are those we want to beat up on them, but those guys are pros as well. And and you know, Rajan obviously made a great play and and the DBs that are usually the best ones are the ones who do have that short memory because they’re going to get beat from time to time as well. So, you just have to continue to fight and and you know, fight the next play and and you’re trying to make the next play. That’s what it is. You can’t worry about what you did previously, good or bad. Yeah. And and Raan’s a guy that’s like like I know probably a lot of a lot of Saints fans haven’t gotten the opportunity to get to know him very much. Came into the NFL in 2023 as an undrafted free agent. Ended up in New Orleans last year and like John and I were impressed by him pretty much the majority of training camp. Then he had this outstanding preseason alongside guys like Rico Payeyton and Shamarjan Charles that had also joined the team that same offseason. He was targeted 10 times in the preseason. Allowed only four catches during that time. two pass breakups where he physically got his hand on the football and knocked away not not you know pass defense wise everything like that he had a strong camp then he ended up on injured reserve before the season started was like late August to where he ended up on on injured reserve and then you know stuck around with the team and then the team after him being on IR all season made him a part of their reserve future deals which is like a pretty good indication that they felt pretty good about him especially with the new coaching staff and all these other things I know it’s a little bit different because it was towards the it was at the end of last season but they were a coaching staff in flux at that time. And then now here he comes, you know, second week of OTAAS, making plays and he also had a pass break up earlier in the practice, too. Um, yeah, he’s a he’s he’s a dude that like maybe not a lot of Saints fans have gotten to know just yet, but like he he he’s made some plays. He’s been a he’s been he’s been solid. Yeah. Uh, John, were there some other takeaways you had from the defensive side? Yeah, I’d say uh it was good to see Chase Young back on the field for starters. I I think he brings the energy like he’s a guy that doesn’t really say a ton like you know after like when we talk to him and stuff but man on the field like I don’t know it was something about it Ross like his energy is just there with his teammates and stuff like the juice I guess I would call it if you will and so it was good seeing him back in action he was kind of when they were doing walkthroughs he kind of got his hand up on the Spencer Rattler pass and they were joking back and forth with each other and stuff and so it was good to see just him back on the field for and and you know, I didn’t see too many plays where he’s really dropping in coverage, but of course, you want him to get after the quarterback. That’s what he’s paid to do, as we’ve pointed out plenty on this show. Uh, and the other thing would be Elante Taylor. I I think we can talk about Danny Stsman. We can reserve that here in a second. But, you know, as far as Alante Taylor, just seeing him and and now we know what his role is. He’s going to be the in base, the outside corner, and then they’re going to go to nickel real quick. He’s going to be the nickel slot guy, if you will. And so, look, he’s he’s somebody that’s ready for it, right? Like, that’s what I’ll just say is that I think he’s finally feels like he’s got a coach that understands how to use him. He’s got some good secondary coaching that is going to help him out as well. They don’t have to play a mystery guess game right now. And so, look, I think those are two of the things that without them really doing much of anything, but um defensive play has to go. I I think Danny Stzman, the way he was able to to kind of position himself on Tyler Shuck, he was kind of rolling out to his left and he was just making a throw on the run to Cedric Wilson. And look, the placement was was pretty pretty darn good is what I would say. And of course, it was right there, but Stman was right there to get uh I think he got a hand on it if I’m not mistaken, Ross. But uh you know, again, that’s a good play by Danny Stsman. really making some waves like quietly. Uh him and Pete Warner obviously Deario hadn’t been there on the days that we were there. He was there last week, but you know, Stzman, man, he’s he’s making an impression on this coaching staff pretty early on. That guy’s a football player. Yeah, a football player. And the the the move that he made on it was Cedric Wilson put his hands up. His eyes were on Cedric Wilson. He saw Cedric Wilson’s hands up. So what did he do? His hands went up. Like it was, you know, he just very fundamental. Very fundamental. very sound in terms of what it is that you want to do and like that’s that’s a that’s a good way to make a play uh in today’s NFL or in the NFL. I think if there’s three things that we have come to an agreement on as a show on State Squad, it’s A, we don’t like pass rushers driving into coverage, B, Danny Stman is a stud, and three, Keenan Allen is our most loyal listener. Spot on. Thank you, Kenan. Thank you. Appreciate the support. hit hit the group chat. Uh yeah, Lance, you said something a couple weeks ago before OTAA started to where you were like you you had you had said that like OTAA there will be moments of OTAAS that will be full speed because there’s guys out there that are like trying to make the roster that are trying to make their impression, all these other things. Uh Danny Stsman’s one of those guys. Danny Stsman is always full speed and Chase Young really was too to his credit. Chase Young, a guy that gets a lot of, you know, has had a lot of question marks maybe unfairly around him when it comes to effort and all this other stuff and everything from people talking about him. I’ve never seen anything but effort from that dude ever since he’s been here in New Orleans. But like he’s another one that is like on full speed at all times, but Danny Szman feels like the the kind of quintessential or or param paramount person paramount example of Yeah, you can go full speed in OTAAS. You’ll be all right. Yeah. Yeah. And look, you want him to be himself. You you don’t want him to come into New Orleans and then you you you water down what makes him such a special athlete, right? Like his motor, his effort, his energy, his attitude. That’s part of what makes him such a good football player, right? Like, and so if you are like, “Oh, okay. This is OTAAS. We’re not going to do X, Y, and Z.” Then he’s kind of looking at you like, “Wait, what? So now now you don’t want me to be me.” Like, so what is it that you want from me exactly? You know, you want to have those type of guys around and obviously we don’t know, right? We don’t know if he’s going to be a great NFL linebacker, but we and I when I say we, I mean me. I’m excited about because I I I watched him play I watched him play at Oklahoma and he’s exactly what you said. is just a dude that is pedal to the metal the entire time and in a situation where your your defense has a need at the position. Now, he might not start, but Deario is going to retire at some point and Pete, if history repeats itself, could potentially get injured at some point. So, there’s going to be a chance for him to get onto the field. And I don’t know how soon or how early that’ll be, but I feel confident that he’d be a guy that even if he doesn’t know what the heck he’s doing all the time, is going to make plays just solely off of his effort alone. And that to me is the definition of a a true football player, a guy that just knows how to play football. He might not know where he needs to be all the time, but he’s going to get somewhere and he’s going to hit somebody. And that’s at the linebacker position. That’s what you that’s what you should love. I I raised my hand. So, I was just going to say the uh it’s going to be interesting when we do get to training camp because I I do think we’ll see a little bit more Danny Stzman because I I’m curious to see how they’re going to work with these veterans on like veteran rest days and stuff. How much tomorrow we’re actually going to see at training camp. How much Cam we’ll see at training camp. How much Tyron I mean they’re going to be at training camp, but I would expect them like last year I don’t know if it was like every third or fourth practice or something like that. just kind of like a rotation, but you know, he’ll get his chance to shine if he keeps this up and he stays in that rotation. But they go with those two linebackers in that. And so I I feel like Stzman could be a part of that. But, you know, there’s some other guys behind him that might want to to elevate their game a little bit, but it’s good to see him shine so early on. I’m I’m sitting here thinking like, how come the Saints were the only team that worked them out? Like, this is insane. It just But hey, that that’s their loss. It’s a break. You know what I mean? out worked out. I’ve heard I’ve heard a lot of really good things about what he’s doing not necessarily on the field like behind the scenes too. Like how he is in a classroom environment, how he is in his room, how he is in the locker room, how he is working with the coaches and all these other things. Like I just everything I’ve heard about this dude is him impressing somebody. It It’s been pretty It’s been pretty cool. Very intelligent draft class. I mean, that’s overall like I think they got a lot of very high football IQ guys out of this draft, which the nerd in me is so happy about that. But I mean, I think that matters. I mean, I think we’re learning that uh that Kellmore has a type. Yeah. Right. It’s him. Shocker. Yeah. Right. I was going to say shocker. The the smart coach likes smart players. Like who who thought? You know what I mean? Like I mean, hey, there are there are worse things to like in a player. Yeah. There are better things to like too. But I I agree. I agree there are. But I completely agree. Like if you’re not able to if you’re not able to understand what you’re seeing or or what your role is or how what someone’s doing and how that impacts your role or whatever it is that that your scheme asks of you, it’s different everywhere, but whatever it is that your scheme asks of you, like if you’re not able to process that, then you’re going to you’re going to struggle. Like I go back to I go back to like Stefon Anthony, right? First round pick for the Saints and everything. was a guy that, you know, played with his hair on fire, had a lot of energy and all those other things, but by everything that we heard about him, struggled a little bit in terms of like playbook and all some of these other things, whatever. And like that limited his trajectory a bit. And so there’s twofold in terms of that, right? Like how much of it is a lack of smarts versus how much of it is a lack of education, which I do not think are the same thing. And so, could the coaching staff have taken a different approach with him to simplify things or to put him in a better situation? 100%. It’s not all on him. But you have to be able to that’s that’s where there are kind of like weaknesses in the chain, if you will, and and sometimes that can that can limit the trajectory of a player, and that doesn’t feel like that’s going to be a concern for this draft class. Yeah, I I think that uh it it’s overall I think the first impression of the draft class has been better than the initial reactions the day after the draft ended, right? Shocker. Oh yeah. Yeah. Buddy with their pitchforks and stuff. Like it’s it’s already like a couple weeks past the draft. Draft grades don’t matter anymore. they’re in the building and so you just got to see what what happens and what they do. And uh maybe maybe some of them will come up in our next segment. I mean, I won’t pick them, but coming up next, we’re going to be talking about players that will thrive in the new system that the Saints are talking with with the new coaches. jumping back into it. We are done talking about OTAAS, at least for right now. Uh we’re gonna jump over. All right. Now, so now now you’re jumping to cutting me off mid midsentence. Um we are going to talk about picking a player that’s going to thrive in the new system, whether it be Kellen Moors or Brandon Staleies. Let’s start with Lance. I mean, I feel like this is this is probably an obvious one. Um, but you’d be foolish to not watch any Philadelphia Eagles game last year and not instantly imagine what AK can do in this Kellmore offense. Yeah. Yeah. And I’m sorry if any of you other guys were going to say AK. Um, I like I just I like a player that clearly still has juice. A player that is is as physically gifted, athletically strength, balance, speed. I mean, you name it. I like I feel like the sky’s is the limit for him in this offense. And it’s not just about turning and handing the ball to him. like he’s been a a big-time receiver for I don’t know how many quarterbacks he’s played with it and you know in his career with the Saints, but um you know being an outlet for young passers this season and being involved in the passing and specifically the screen game more than he has in the last couple of years. I mean, I just it gets me excited to to think about what he could be in this offense. Now, I’m not going to sit here and tell you today that he’s going to have over 2,000 yards. He might have over 2,000 yards of total offense. Like, I see that as a real possibility. Um, but I just I I he’s got to stay healthy clearly. I mean, that’s that’s the most important thing is is being able to be on the field for 17 games. Um, but I I think that they’re going to try to get their their money’s worth with him. Um, and that’s not to say that he won’t get spelled and other, you know, younger backs won’t get opportunities, but I mean, if if if I’m Kell Moore, I’m I’m going to be riding the AK as much as possible, giving him the ball in as many different ways as possible. um and and allowing what I think is going to be a strength in this offensive line to attack defenders and get physical and create running lanes for him to be able to do work. I mean, I I I I do I mean I I don’t think he’s too old. I don’t think he’s he’s um shown that he’s really even slowing down outside of some of the injuries, but um you know, he’s the guy that’s that stands out to me um more than anybody else. when I, you know, first take a take it in as far as who do I think is going to thrive. Um, it’s definitely AK. It’s hard not to get excited. Yeah. Yeah, it really is. You want to do something crazy? I was thinking about what you said, Lance, how many quarterbacks he’s played with since he’s been here in New Orleans. Would you believe me if I told you that the answer is 10? That’s crazy. 10 different quarterbacks. Isn’t that nuts? Drew Brees, Teddy Bridgewwater. This is from memory so maybe I missed something but Drew Brees Teddy Bridgewwater Taesm Hill of course uh Jameus Winston, Trevor Simeon, Ian Book, he was active during that game Atlanta teammate. That’s right in in Beach Volleyball League. Uh Andy Dalton. Um Derek Carr, Jake Kainir, Spencer Rattler. Why do I feel like you’re missing one too? I feel like I might be as well, but that’s 10 quarterbacks. It’s crazy. And for a dude that joined in 2017 where he still got 17, 18, 19, 20 all under withdrew and everything, you know what I mean? Like that’s forgot Wilson Jr. That’s who you forgot. That’s right. That’s right. That’s right. He did catch a touchdown pass from Cedric Wilson Jr. Um, I’m not going to hold it up, but if anybody remembers, you know, if if we did miss somebody, put it in the chat. But like it’s it’s that’s that’s that’s wild. Like even for it to be at least 10 is crazy. Yeah. Or feels crazy. Yeah, that is crazy. Well, it would be it would be different if he played in multiple places, right? Like, oh, he’s bounced around. He’s been with a couple of struggling teams who’ve trying to figure out who they’re He’s been with one organization his entire career and there’s been 10 different signal callers for him. That’s that’s pretty crazy for sure. Yeah. And half of his career was with Drew. You know what I mean? Like nuts. Just nuts. Um I’m going to jump over to the other side of the football and I’m going to go with a player that I really like. Ross knows how much I loved the 2021 Utah defense. Oh. And I’m going to I’m going to talk about Nephi Su because a lot of time when we talk about the new schemes, I think we talk about players who have the opportunity to go back to doing something that they did well or and maybe change what they did. Nephi doesn’t really have to change what he’s been doing. I just think he’s a better fit for what Brandon Staley does because uh it’s the lighter box. He’s a little bit more athletic. He can go more ground. He in 2021 he had that the 425 defense uh was their base scheme. So he’s he’s played in a two linebacker system. Devin Lloyd, one of my favorite college players ever, was that Deario and Nephi uh had the opportunity to be a little bit of a ror. He played all over the field. He was the chest piece. He is a former defensive back. He’s a former safety. And I feel like Brandon Sely does have the opportunity to use him and use the depth of his skill set uh well. And I think that that’s a player I’m really excited to see play this season. Uh because he’s he’s had flashes and I think that he’s, you know, for where he was picked in the draft and everything about him, he’s shown enough to still be a little bit excited about him growing what he’s doing what he’s done so far. So I’m gonna go Nephi. I like that. He’s also exceptionally smart. Yes, exceptionally smart. Absolutely. But yeah, he’s uh he’s somebody that I mean, you talk about the linebacker room. I think that’s something that we kind of been a little bit I don’t want to say concerned about, but you know, behind Deario and Pete, you know, we know about Danny Stsman, but you know, there’s opportunity there, right? And you’re going to make some your way probably on special teams, but they may have to go to a Nephi school one time. they may have to go to a Jaylen Ford or you know what is Isaiah Stalard’s role going to look like in this defense and such. So I mean there’s a lot of possibilities that could come from this linebacker group but you know I also wonder given that they’re really just kind of rolling with the two like how many are going to be on the final roster. I’m going to be interested to see how that shapes out with final cuts too. But again Nephi is a a sneaky pick there Dylan. I kind of like that one. Yeah. Um, uh, John, who do you think, who do you have? Yeah, I’d say I’d go back to the offensive side of the ball and the captain obvious, I’d say it’s Jawan Johnson. I think Jawan Johnson has a unique opportunity in this offense. Now, I wouldn’t say I’d go base it off of what Dallas Goddard did against for Philly last year because if you look at his stats, it really wasn’t that great. I mean, he had some good games, but I think Jawan can get uh a little bit more consistency here. And and look, I I think when you we’ve said it on the show, but whether they go with Tyler Shuck or Spencer Rattler, Jawan Johnson can be a security blanket for either of them, right? And and the thing is Kell Moore likes to use him or wants to use him in that second and third level, the field, but they can also use him around different things and if they can get the run game going. The only thing I think Joan needs to to improve on is run blocking, but you know, of course, that’s easier said than done, easy for me to say, right? But, you know, uh I’m not going to go back block somebody. But, um at any rate, I think Jawan has more of an opportunity to get more targets. Um obviously, he got a big contract extension or contract from the Saints to not go into free agency after all that fiasco. But, I really feel like Jawan has something to to prove and something that he can bring this offense. And look, I’m not going to sit here and tell you he’s going to put up George KD or Travis Kelce type numbers, but I do think that he can put up some strong things. I think he could be like a a Jonnu Smith what he did for the Dolphins in late, you know, second half of the year last year and such. I I think he has that type of potential, but again, he’s going to get some of those targets. He’s going to get a lot of yards. He’s going to get a lot of looks. Hopefully, this team can get better in the red zone and can get into the red zone because I think he’s going to be a red zone magnet, too. Yeah, it’s a good call. Yeah, I like that. Need somebody there. Somebody. Didn’t Didn’t Dallas didn’t Dallas Gddard have his best game in the dome last year? I think you might was his best. That was one of the best games that I’ve seen anyone have in the He was killing us. Oh my god. Yeah, that was Why can’t we Right. He had that big like 70, what was it? 60 plus yard catch and run for a touchdown on the crosser. Everything late in the game. Yeah, they stopped that kind of probably win. Yeah, he only had one 100 plus yard game last year and it was against the Saints and it was 170. It was a buck 70. He was targeted. Yeah, it was crazy. He was targeted 11 times and caught 10 passes. Yep. Yeah. But that’s what I’m saying. He ended up with 500 yards and that 170 came against the the Saints. And so that’s what I’m saying. He didn’t have like a crazy productive year. Only had two touchdowns if I remember right. And so, uh, but I think Jawan’s got way more upside in this offense for sure. Yeah, I think Jawan finished with more receiving yards than he did last year because Jana had 548. I think God got was like 490. Got 496. 496. Yeah. Yeah. And so I I I want to comment a little bit about what I think John you said it like he’s got to get a little bit better in his blocking. Look, a receiver moving to tight end is no easy switch, right? Like for him, getting open would be easier, right? Like, okay, I’m not going against top tier corners on the outside. Most of the time I’m I’ve got linebackers and safeties and potentially little bitty defensive backs covering me, so I should be able to get open easier. But moving into the box now and having to block linebackers and defensive ends is difficult for sure, especially for a guy that’s used to playing receiver. And so, does he need to improve? Yes, I agree with you that he needs to improve, but it’s not as simple as, hey, let’s do a couple drills in the offseason and you’ll be, you know, you’ll be able to handle these these 260 pound edge guys. You know, I I I do think that part of it is coach’s scheming to be able to put him in places that are, you know, beneficial for him, right? Put him on the backside of run plays. Don’t put him at the point of attack against a 275 pound defensive end that’s a run stuffer, right? Like don’t put him when you keep him in in protection. Don’t leave him in in protection against Micah Parsons by himself. You know what I mean? So, like, sure, there’s part of that that needs to happen as far as his improvement goes, but the reality is he’s not going to block like George KD. It’s it’s just not going to happen. He’s not that that he’s not built like that. And he didn’t grow up playing tight end. So, it’s it’s partially on the coaching staff to put him in positions of success as opposed to, hey, you’re the tight end, you’ve got to get this job done, right? like it’s it’s there’s there’s other guys that can come in and and be more effective at that, heavier guys, guys that are used to playing tight end and have played tight end forever. And I don’t want to beat a dead horse here, but I do think there’s there’s more to it than just saying, “Okay, well this guy’s got to get better at this one thing that he’s never really been comfortable doing, right?” And I wonder like I’m thinking about the schedule, too. I I’m trying to think of all the premier pass rushers they’re going to play against this year. I’m I’m trying to think like I I mean not no disrespect to any of the teams but you know I’m just looking at some of the teams that they have and I mean yeah but to me it’s not even it doesn’t even have to be a premier pass rusher right like a guy whose job it is to come on the field in third down pin his ears back and rush the passer leaving tight ends to block those guys single-handedly generally doesn’t work out well for the offense. No. And if you if you look at Dallas Goddard, right, Goddard’s not the strongest run blocker, but Kell Moore did a good job of scheming and making sure that that didn’t become a problem. A guy like Jack Stole, who John and I have talked to in the locker room a couple times now, this dude like is a fantastic blocker at tight end and then they added him. I think he makes the roster because of what he can add as an additional protection player. And so maybe that’s just like Yeah, 100%. And when you have when you have those guys, put them on the field and let them handle handle some of those things too to take a little bit of that pressure off. But, you know, you want to make sure when Jawan’s out there that it’s not like all send, oh, we know exactly what he’s doing. He’s going to have to hold it down every now and then, but put him in positive positions to get that done. Yep. That comes from coaching, too. Like Lance said, I think previous coaching staffs not used Jawan in that potential. Like they said, okay, you’re going to you’re going to do this. You’re going to do this. And it’s like maybe that’s not what he needs to do. Yeah. They always kind of it felt like they always kind of treated him as like a break glass in case of emergency things to where like he wasn’t really utilized as like a focus in the pass a game until there were like eight games left in the year and everybody else was hurt. It was like oh Jawan can catch and then all of a sudden like that became the thing. I know that’s not actually how it worked out, but like it really has been to where he wasn’t as much a focus at the beginnings of seasons that he has been towards the end of seasons for multiple years at this point. Like it is a repeatable thing that the that these other coaching staffs have done or teams took him away. I don’t know. Like whatever it is, but for whatever reason didn’t it did it wasn’t there at the beginning of the year. Yeah. It just it just feels like we’ve been waiting forever for that for that moment of Jawan Johnson becoming the player that we’ve wanted to see. And I feel like this is his best chance at that that they’ve gotten. Uh and you know, hopefully that would be awesome if Joan Johnson was the this the fix all along because uh you know, their Tik Toks are awesome. Shout out shout out shout out. Uh well, coming up next, we’re going to jump over and talk to a talk about a defensive player uh that I think again, we didn’t talk about him in this segment, but could be someone that benefits from a deep from a scheme change. Oh, yeah. Welcome back. Wrapping it up on Sage Squad today. If if John didn’t give it away, we’re gonna be talking about Kool-Aid McKinstry. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. People might be too too young for that. I’m just saying I love a good commercial. Um Kle McGitry, he had a solid rookie season. uh you know, he looked like a rookie and now there’s been time. He’s gonna have more responsibilities. He’s he’s had time to not in this defense, but he’s had time to adjust to the league. Lance, what do you think about him heading into year two? Uh what does he need to do this season, and how much do you think he’s in a spot to succeed? Yeah. Well, I look, I think a guy that was able to get some valuable experience now, while it wasn’t super successful on the field defensively, I mean, for him personally, but, you know, for the the entire defense, um, being able to get some live reps going into his second season is going to benefit him big time, right? Like it’s it’s he’s not going to line up against anybody and it’s his first goround at it. I think he, you know, has the potential to be an impact player on this defense. Um, you know, I like what he he brings as far as his competitiveness, his physicality. Um, and and I think we’re going to see the best of him in this defense in particular because I I do think that the scheme change will allow us to have a better pass rush even though we don’t know exactly who those pass rushers are going to be um yet. Um, but I think a better pass rush will allow for our DBs to play a little bit more aggressive and to have some more success on the outside. And he’s a guy that if he gets the ball in his hands is electric. I mean, he was a punt returner at Alabama and and we’ve all seen what he can do when he gets the ball in his hands. And, you know, after losing two starting corners last year, we need corners to step up and and play big roles and be impact players. Um, and and you know, with with Alante kind of moving from outside to inside as the game goes along, we need some consistency out there on the outside as far as being he doesn’t have to be shut down in year two. But I do think we need to see him making impact plays and building on the little bit of playing time that he got last year and becoming one of those regulars on defense, a guy that we can count on and rely on on the outside because um you know I I I do think with the the young quarterbacks that we’re going to field, our defense is going to have to at least early on hold opponents to lower scoring totals so that our offense will have a chance to score enough points to win. I just I just think with the young quarterback and the new system, I think it’s going to take a little bit of time on the other side of the ball. So, we need those impact plays and particularly on the outside when teams choose to throw the football on us. And I think Kool-Aid has shown that that he’s got the ability now. It’s about going out making those plays and and and becoming consistent at it as well. Yeah, he uh he had a 57.9% completion percentage on targets against him as a rookie. I feel like that’s a solid, but you obviously you want want it to get lower, but I feel like this is a solid rate to start at. Um and now Ross, I was going to say look at his last three games though, right? Like course of the time where he got that chance, he had eight eight straight starts at the end of the season, right? Over the course of the last three games, he was targeted 17 times, allowed five catches. So you went from that 57% completion percentage or you’re talking about to a 29.4% completion percentage. Some of that like you you know there’s there’s other elements to that. But when it comes down to him being able to impact plays, I think you saw him get better and better and better as the season as the season went on. I think he allowed one touchdown during those during those last three games like that. But man, to be able to stay consistent enough, five catches on on 17 targets, like you could give me 17 targets against, you know, 50-year-old NFL players a hundred times over and I’m never holding anybody to five catches. You know what I mean? Like that’s never happening. And so like that’s that’s just remarkable stuff for him in terms of like what his trajectory was from being like this extra depth player that you knew was going to get reps, meaningful reps in 2024. We said it over and over again and then to get thrust into like a larger role and then into a larger role and then into a larger role and then to just get better and better throughout the season. I think the momentum is there for him too. When you’re looking for breakout guys, the things I like to look at are uh that do initially, do they have the talent, right? Check that he got drafted. Check. Okay. U do they have the opportunity, right? The path is open for him to be a starter. And then does he have a system that will support him and does he have the momentum to be able to step into that system and find success? And I think you can check every one of those boxes for him. I would call him a breakout breakout candidate going into his second year. We’ll see if he’s able to do it. He’s got to be able to do it. I I think you could see kind of that that upward trajectory for him, which I think is just as important as anything else around him right now. Yeah. And while you’re while you’re we’re looking at numbers, I think another one that stands out to me is during those last three games, it was those 17 targets. It was a bit of an issue for him earlier in the season was yards after the catch of making letting bad plays go to worse. Um, and during those 17 targets, he allowed 17 yards after the catch in total of those five catches. I think that is a massive improvement. uh over because you you see like there were games he had double digits double digit yak in a game six or seven times earlier in the season. So to to bring that way down over the last couple games I think is another massive improvement. Yeah. Plays at the catch point for any DB massive. Go ahead. Go ahead, Lance. For sure. And I and I think with any young defensive back in particular, adjusting to the speed of the NFL takes time, right? like there’s not too many Derell revases, right, that that come into the National Football League and and early early on are following, you know, number one receivers all over the field, right? And and you know, he obviously was, in my opinion, the greatest defensive back I’ve ever played against at any level, like just stone cold killer. But most guys, talented or not, they’re going to take some time to adjust to the speed, to the physicality, to the strength of the receivers. Like, so it’s not as simple as it was. Even though he played in the SEC, and I know everybody’s, oh, about the SEC, like these guys are pros, right? And they’re all fast and they’re all strong and they all want to take the, you know, take every single catch to the house. So it does it does take some time to adjust to the speed and the strength and all that stuff and and it makes sense that he progressively got better as the season went along and and I think part of that too is is learning how to become a pro, learning how to practice. Like all that stuff is important and we’ll see another step forward, you know, come the beginning of this season. Hopefully he continues to improve as his career goes along. Yeah. Yeah. John, where do you sit on on Kool-Aid entering year? Yeah, I was Oh, I’d say this is red. Yeah, red Kool-Aid. Yeah, always red. Um, the thing you brought up about the the at the end of the year, I mean, you got to remember Saints lost those three games. They got outscored 86 to 29 in those games. That included the Green Bay shellacking, then the Raiders lost, and then the Tampa lost at the end of the year. So, for him to to be that good in a on a team that was just getting bulldozed is a good sign. Um, one of the things I think about is it’s not really a surprise to see how well he’s doing because I remember Joe Wood saying from day one how technically sound Kool-Aid McKinstry was when he came into the league. And so, there was just a lot of things he got praised from Tyron Matthew. And so I do believe that he’s somebody that can be even better. I I t I think when I think of him, I think about elite like Carlton Davis took with the Bucks. Like he was playing a little bit his first year and the second year he was really playing well and the third and fourth years he was like just out of his out of his mind. Now of course if he was playing Mike Thomas that would might have been a little different thing, but I just think with Kool-Aid it’s just one of those that you know where are you gonna where you going to go? Are you going to Is that going to be uh Alante on base that you’re going to try to to to target or Kool-Aid? And I think those are an exciting thing where if the Saints can get home on their pass rush and they’re going to have their hands full with some of these receivers, you know, Tyreek Hill is one that comes to mind. I mean, uh the 49ers keep stuff with Brandon Iuk. He’ll get tested early. Marvin Harrison Jr., you know, right off the gate. I’m excited to see how they that comes together. But I think Kool-Aid has the potential to be something really good in in this defense. And Brandon Staley obviously being a secondary guy too is going to help him out. And so I I I just think the sky’s is the limit for somebody like him. He’s very smart, very intelligent, great technical base that he has and I think it shows up on film. And so I think he’s going to be a pretty good one here, you know, next season. Yeah. I mean, I feel like people, you know, it’s going to take a little bit of a learning a viewing curve because they’re not going to have like Marshon Latimore or, you know, Paul Adbo in the secondary. And I feel like that’s one of the big question marks heading into the the draft in free agency that really didn’t get addressed. Like they brought back Isaac Yam, but you know, that’s not I wouldn’t although I do think Isaac Yam, you know, plays a role in this defense. I I think that it’s more of like a lateral move rather than an upgrade secondary. So, you’re going to need players well, Quincy Riley uh can can step up, but you’re going to need players like uh Kool-Aid to play better than they have been. And I think that so, you know, it’s a it’s a big year for for old Kool-Aid. I’ll mention too, like when we’re talking about him specifically fitting into this scheme, he knows this scheme. He was in a Sabin defense. He was been in this pattern match kind of coverage. Now, Sabin did like a cover seven pattern match variation that kind of worked off of his cover three. It was how he wanted to deal with four verts and things like that. transition from one coverage into another coverage style based upon what routes opposing wide receivers are running. It’s like the most simplified way that a lot of DB coaches are screaming at me right now, but it’s the most simplified way that I could explain it. And so like you have that in this Brandon Staley defense as well. Very prevalent part of his his coverage in the way that he works. And so assuming that he’s not changing that, we haven’t really asked him outright, but like assuming that he’s not changing that, then that is something that Kool-Aid McKenry should fit right into. So even you know along with the momentum at the end of the year the the opportunity that’s ahead of him all these other things he might be the DB that’s maybe amongst those that are the most comfortable with this system already because he has that Sabin experience and a lot of that’s going to look very similar to what the Staley experience uh or or or sorry what his upcoming experience with Staley uh will look like. So, I I think he’s probably also, ironically enough, even though he’s one of the youngest defensive backs in that room in terms of the guys that are towards the top of that conversation, he might be one of the most prepared ones already uh stepping into the role, at least specifically at the cornerback position. Yeah, I’m I’m excited. This is uh you know the closer we get you know so far away from the season but you know actually be able to see Saints players in uniform practicing and OTAAS I’m getting more excited for the season than I was like a month ago uh just in terms of like you know I wonder why I mean that’s why everybody got excited right oh speaking of speaking of today the day guys. Um June 1st retirements retirements can process today post June 1st. So uh so there you go. And speaking of that, Klay Mckenry might be able to take the number four if he wants it in that case too. Just just slightly slightly disgram that and Ramch coming off the books. Yep. Even though they already gave they already gave Kelvin Banks Ryan Ramch’s number. It’s the funniest thing. Sure. Right. Yeah. 7171. Yeah. The actual the actual transaction is a formality. We we you know accounting. Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. Well, and for and real quick for those who don’t know, if if a player is cut or retires, that jersey just goes to whoever the next guy is. Like they don’t there is no morning process or anything. Like it is it is cutthroat when it comes to it is cutthroat when it comes to that. like, yeah, okay, that guy was wearing that jersey in that locker. Now there’s a new guy in that locker wearing that same jersey. That’s how it goes in the National Football League. Equinamia St. Brown. Uh, Lance, who who’s your favorite 16 post retirement for for New Orleans? I mean, I think it’s Bub Means. Like, I I like I like what he’s doing. I like Brandon I like Brandon Copeland, but but you know, Bub Means is doing his thing. And I’m and I’m not one of those guys that’s like nobody should ever wear 16 again. Like I I was just a guy that wore the jersey in that time frame, right? I didn’t own it. You know, the Saints own that jersey. So, um you know, I’m I’m happy to see him improving and and hopefully see more of him on the field come 2025. There you go. Yeah. Well, you’ll see some improvement come Thursday or whenever we’re we’re back here for Saint squad. Thank you for listening to this. Go out and check out me, Russ, and John and Lance on our social. Yeah Im not investing my emotions on this team until i see the team with my own eyes.
At least i want to see what they look like. Last year was putrid We had to endure Dennis Allen and the Derek Carr era ..urgh…the situation looks better, but it looked better last year too and the year before and the year before so my conclusion is the media over hypes the team to sell tickets for the franchise. Ill remain cautiously optimistic until further notice.
If you’re not willing to own a stock for 10 years, don’t even think about owning it for 10 minutes.
Crazy how one draft pick can make the OL exciting and promising once you buy into the vision the banks pick really is exciting a definitely A grade
Kills me that there are folks out there thinking AK is washed. Hes played in some tired ass offensive schemes, and hasnt had a starting consistent O line! Hes fittin to ball out! ✊🏾

When our offensive line was intact and I receivers were healthy we were headed to the playoffs. What has changed? the line has improved. Our receivers are back healthy, and by quarterback whoever it may be is better why can’t we go to the playoff this year?
