Eagles Press Conference: Vic Fangio | June 3 2025
Big big why didn’t Bryce Huff work? Well, I think the one thing is um he was getting better and when he hurt his hand um you know he tried to play with it a couple weeks. It wasn’t going good because he was reluctant to use his hand. And then when they operated on it, he had to play with a big cast on his hand which basically rendered his hand useless and then rendered your arm useless cuz you can’t use your hand. That really, you know, had an effect on him. And you know, we just come out of draft season and first thing you see when they put a guy’s name up on the board, his hand size, his arm length. Well, he lost all that. and in that while he was out, you know, Nolan got more snaps, Jay got more snaps, and things evolved. But I think he’ll do fine in San Francisco. What kind of role do you envision for Jiad Campbell and specifically as the pass rusher? How did you evaluate him? Well, right now he’s working at ILB um because there’s a lot more to learn there. So, that’s where we’ll start him. He he won’t hit the practice field practice field until, you know, sometime in August. Um, so we’re doing all we can. He’s doing all he can in meetings. We’re doing all we can with him on the field. Um, I take him to the side and do an individual drill with him that’s uh suited to what he can do right now. So, he’s working good and trying to pick it up. When you see him though, do you see pass rush upside with Jiad potentially? What would it take to realize that? Getting him out there. How do you feel about the edge rusher situation like the fact that Sweat is parted, BG has retired, Huff has been traded, and you have two young returning guys, and you have a couple free free agents. How do you feel about that position? Yeah, I feel good about Nolan. I think we’ll feel good about Jayix, you know, now that he’s um going to get a lot of reps and develop. He he played good for us down the stretch last year and played a lot as you saw. So, I feel good about those two guys and I think they’ll continue to improve. You know, we’ve got Uch, we’ve got Aziz, um we’ve got three other guys there. I think we’ll be fine. What are you looking to find out about Cooper as you’re um you know trying him out at base that corner in in that plan right now? with Cooper Dine. Um, yeah, we’d like to keep him at nickel and then in our base package, we’ll find a spot for him either at corner or safety. What’s the benefit of someone who can play inside at nickel and outside in base cuz you’d have to find, you know, someone that corner at the nickel size with like 80% of snaps. Yeah, I think a lot of it will end up depending upon how the rest of the guys develop and where do we uh most need them. So, it will be determined by what’s best for him and what’s best for the team and it’ll probably what’s best for the team will win out in that decision. But he’s capable of playing corner and he’s capable of playing safety. What’s your what’s your view of that who are developing whether it’s Keley, Matt, Adori, um how do they look and how comfortable are you with them starting on the outside right now? Well, it’s always hard to tell this time of year. Um you know, without the pads on even at that position, but I think both those guys are making good strides. They’re both into it and they know there’s a job there to be had for somebody. And um I think they’ve had good off seasons, both of them. What’s your view? What’s your view of the uh Muba Sydney uh competition? It’s a competition that, you know, it’s going to take a training camp, a few preseason games to sort out. And Tristan’s in that, too. What do you like about what Let’s not get too testy there. What’s what’s the what are the pros for Sydney going in as in terms of having the experience that he has? How does that help him? Well, his experience came in 23, not 24. Um, you know, last year at this time he wasn’t doing anything and didn’t do anything really till the middle of October. So, he lost all the uh this time of year, training camp, early part of the season, and really never got many reps with us defensively. He did play in the last game against the Giants and did fine, but you know, it’s a new system from what he had in 23. So, yes, he’s sitting in meetings, but that only goes so far. You got to get out there and experience it and build on it. and he lost that last year. So that he’s going through that process now and he’s doing fine. You mentioned uh Jiad also Nico’s uh got a difficult rehab. So uh Trot, you started with Trot. Uh how are you going to work that until those guys are ready? And does Zach play Mike in that situation? Yeah, well Zach can play either spot. Again, that will just like with Cooper wherever we need him the most. what’s best for the team, which will be determined some by who the next guy is until Nico comes back, which, you know, he he’ll he won’t be back for a while. Um, you know, we’ll we’ll that’ll be TBD. You know, that’ll be a good question after two preseason games. What do you like about the idea of Cooper at safety and what will go into determining whether he plays at safety or the outside? Well, I I think he would play very well at safety. Um, I think it suits his skill set, things that he does well. Um, I just think he would uh do very well in there. How many you guys, we played 21 games last year. How many base snaps do you guys think we played? 75. than that. No, you’re way off. 30% 15% around. Yeah. About 160 total. Is that part of your like philosophy of having like your five best defensive backs out there in the secondary no matter Well, in last year’s case, um we evolved to that because it once Cooper started to play very well, it got him on the field more. It was a much better fit for our edge guys. They could play nickel end instead of having to play three, four outside backer. So at last year it was a good fit for where we were personnel-wise. This year that could change. Where did you factor into the decision to have Jordan Davis pick up his fifth year option? What does he need to do in his fourth year to warrant uh that decision? Yeah, I mean I didn’t have anything to do with that decision, you know, that’s how it is. But um Jordan last year, I would say the last seven or eight games, including the playoffs, um played very well down the stretch. And I think that’s carried over into this off season and I anticipated carrying over into the season. I think he’s in the best shape that he’s ever been in, which he kind of got into late in the season last year and he’s carried it over. So, I think um he’s going to do very well for us this year. You don’t typically see that. Can I just follow up real quick on that? You don’t typically see guys get in their best shape late into the season. Why did it take so long for him to get in his best shape? We could be here a long time for that. Um, just, you know, for some guys it takes time, but I’m ducking that question. How is Davis evolved as a pass rusher? How, uh, Davis, how is he evolved as a pass rusher? He got better towards the, uh, those last seven or eight games. He really did. And, um, you saw it in practice first, you know, unlike a lot of people think you don’t need practice, you do need practice. and he showed it in practice first and then it carried over into the games and so I think he realized that felt it felt good and he’s just carried it over all off season in terms of Jaylen Carter over Jen played over a thousand snaps last year um on the offensive side of the ball Nick’s gotten question about you know Saquon’s usage um you know heavy usage last year is that something you have to consider going forward hard with him and you making sure that you know he’s able to play at a high level, not putting too many. Well, in Jaylen’s case, the the two plays he had at the end of the Rams game, which everybody has alluded to many times, those were his 68th and 69th snaps in those in that game. I just mean I don’t mean from like I obviously he showed that he was well conditioned last year. I just mean from the perspective of no long-term if he’s playing an extreme number of snaps every year, do you worry that his performance would drop off? He’s still a young pup. And to follow up on that, in terms of Jaylen Carter, year three, Jeremiah Troder, senior said on WIP yesterday that he’s been hearing from some folks that Jaylen doesn’t even know how to play the position yet. It was a it was it was in a complimentary fashion in a sense to say that he doesn’t even know how to play the position yet. sky’s is the limit. What’s your thoughts on that? I agree with the uh you know with the point he’s trying to make. I do think Jaylen the good news about Jaylen is twofold. One, he played very well for us last year and two he can still improve a lot. Ringo, what did you see? He’s you’ve had Ringo for a full year now. Mhm. What do you like about, you know, his skill set to play the outside and where does he still need to improve? He just needs reps, you know, he needs to learn to play the game and that comes with reps. And you know, to quote Nick said in a meeting recently, um, repetition is the burden of leadership. It’s up to us to get him enough reps in practice, expose him to all the things he needs to be exposed to. So he can play a full NFL game. When I say full, not physically conditioning wise, but be a competent corner throughout a full game and a full season, how much how much did how much did depth have to do with the defensive’s success last year? And do you think you have that same depth going into this season? Uh, it’s too early to say. I mean, I look at, and I told the players this, um, I look at this year very similar to last year in that at this time last year, you know, we had a lot of turnover in personnel from the previous year. You know, you had Bond, nobody knew what he was at this point last year. You had Nico, who hadn’t played any meaningful NFL football in his first two years. You had um Orin Burks who we had just signed. You had Isaiah Rogers who he had just signed. Um you had OMO who didn’t play hardly at all his rookie year. Got Nolan who didn’t play hardly at all his rookie year. We got Chanty back. We drafted Q Cooper. um Jix you know we had a lot of you know question marks at that time or you didn’t know you know this year those names are replaced Ringo Adori Sydney McCollum O Gillari Uch um Byron Young Gabe Hall Booker Jihad you know all the draft picks uh Makuba Robinson you you know, um, smile. And then the rest of the rookies, some of those guys in that second list have to become like those guys in the first list. And I don’t know how that’s going to turn out, but I look at us really basically the same one year to the next. The names have changed. Hopefully, we’ll get the same results from these new guys that we got from a lot of the new guys last year. What were your thoughts? What were your thoughts on training CJ? What? What were your thoughts on trading CJ? Uh, you know, that was a salary cap type thing and how he made that decision. I was fine with it. With Drew Makuba, we talked about uh Cooper’s versatility. Played a lot of slot earlier in his career. Do you do you see that kind of versatility at least? We haven’t yet only because we’ve focused him on at safety right now, but we, you know, we’re well aware that he played it in college and might have some ability there, too. Given all that turn that you talked about, of the three levels of the defenses, is there one area where you keep you up most at night or you most curious about what answers are going to be? No, really. It’s all of them, you know, cuz you know, until the Kobe comes back, which won’t be anytime soon, you know, you got that to fill. We got then got to get guys in our edge rotation, you know, minus the guys we lost last year. You got to replace Milt, you know, and his snaps, which I think will be done with guys we already had here, you know, with the addition of Robinson, you know, obviously got to have starting safety, a starting corner. Um, so it’s kind of spread equally. What matters most, they all matter. We’ve heard the anecdote of of of you bringing the team together or the defense together rather uh to review the second half of the Super Bowl. Why was that important to you that day to do that? That was fake news. Yeah. Never did that. I actually brought them together on that day to compliment them on how well they played in the Super Bowl. There was not a negative word spoken. Glad to clarify that. Huh? I’m glad to clarify that. Fake news.

This dude is next level. He really has a ceo approach, I love how he sticks to the facts and doesn’t get bogged down in speculation. He confronts speculation with behind the curtain truth while still maintaining his commitments to honor the players and organization. The only place he messed up was the CJGJ question, it’s clear at this point Howie doesn’t love CJGJ but ultimately it came down to business. Mentioning his personal feelings on it was a trap.
I really appreciate Vic's honesty. He's a straight shooter. I love that.
Yep was waiting for this one
Respectfully, Vic, Dean is coming back earlier than expected. Don't count him out.
Does Fangio have an offense minded brother? Asking for a friend.
you can tell how much Vic knows his shit. He really knows the ins and outs of everything. I have full confidence in him.
Love seeing Vic where he belongs. Next season is gonna be fire. Go Birds!
Thank god vic is here
Old school football coach!
Fangio is the godfather. He knows his defense
Based Vic putting down fake news Philly media🤣
The questions for coaches are 100 times more interesting than the ones players get.
Anyone wondering the answer is yes , vic was promoted to be joeys underboss.
In Fangio We Trust
He was getting better 😂😂
Vic is such a professor!
Thank God for this man! It’s so refreshing to hear from such a knowledgeable coach knowing that he should be here leading our defense until the day he’s ready to retire.
Fake news😂😂😂
He told everyone what most of us already know without actually saying it—Mukuba was drafted to start. Brown just doesn’t have the athleticism to start. And I understand those that don’t really understand football or athleticism that wanted Brown to “develop”. You can’t develop talent.
One of the best move the Eagles org has made was bringing this “grumpy old man” home 🫡
He gave 2 zingers 1) at Huff for not practicing (after his PC compliment) 2) at the reporters for watching too much baseball and comparing pitchers’ innings to snaps. This new age nonsense about saving guys. For when? Wasn’t a problem in the old days. Isn’t now either.
Guys can we PLEASE have better audio on the questions????
Our defense is in good hands.
I'm so glad Vic is staying
Nothing like a refreshing presser from the Godfather of the Defense
Ringo was a better wide receiver at GA than a defense player.
Viv Fangio just looks the part of what I imagine a DC would look like and sound like. The Birds landed a real one.. Go Birds 🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅
Vic is such a awesome curmudgeon😂😂🦅
Let's go, Eagles!!!!
Vic speaks I listen.
VIC tory is ours! FLY 🦅 FLY!
Between Vic and Stout, this coaching staff has HOFs that we need to appreciate while we have them. Go birds! 🦅
The DUDE.. 😎..Vic Fangio " I am looking for MORE"… Defense coordinator/ head coach and Stoutland on offense side..😮
Rocky..you correct 💯 the godfather…Ric Flair style… 😳
He's very realistic about things, but he also has an air of confidence about what's ahead… they'll work things out, time and repetition will take care of things… these guys are young and deep all over…
best dc we had since jim johnson
Repetitions are the burden of leadership.
What a fucking great quote.
How many times in life is that not the case in so many different industries obviously we’re talking about sports but men in my line of work restaurants. This is a dime I will be dropping.
Fangio reminds me of my high school coach tough hard nose no bs
Love Vic. Hes cooking something
Great positive quotes on Jorden Davis
I know I wouldn’t want to face this defense! Can’t wait till the Kansas City game. Son and I went out there and we pulled out a victory, lots of eagles fans in our section but it was def enemy territory
It's so refreshing to hear Vic answer the questions directly, and decline questions directly too.
