MLB LIVE🔴 Chicago Cubs vs Washington Nationals – Jun 4, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

So, almost ready to get underway. And today’s starter, Mitchell Parker. And Singi, it’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think, they can move through a ball game and you look off, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. Hit pretty well in the air out to center. Hessle makes the play and a quick out number one. Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup. The sluggers in this lineup might not be too happy about the fact that the wind is blowing in today, Chris. Yeah. And you hear pitchers talk about how good it feels when the wind is at their back. And for hitters, you almost feel like beyond just the pitcher coming at you, you’ve got this other force coming against you. So important to try to get on top of the ball in terms of hitting line drives. You know, maybe really hard ground balls with a good exit velocity that’ll get you a base hit because it’s very frustrating. You just hit one on the screws, think it’s going to go out of the ballpark, and an outfielder is camped underneath it in front of the warning track. Fast ball for a strike and the count is 0 and two. Oh, this guy’s so comfortable hitting with two strikes. Even a good pitch early in the at bat, if he’s not ready to pull the trigger, he’s not worried if he gets to an 02 count. battling here as he fouls it away. One out, base is empty. That one misses and the count is one and two. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. [Music] That one misses. Three and two now. Fights it off. You’ll see another. Ninth pitch of the bat. do next. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch [Music] to the right side and foul ball. draws the walk there. It wasn’t easy, but he earned that walk after a long at bat. When you go that deep into an at bat, the hitter usually comes out on top. Man at first with one gone. And now the right fielder, Seiya Suzuki swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. [Music] and now one and two. Pretty standard high 02 fast ball right there. If you’re smart, you’ll look for something down in the zone, but not too far. Don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt. No foul ball. Tucker the base runner at first with one out. Two balls in the dirt. spoils that one and it remains two and two. [Music] Ground ball up the middle and that one finds its way through. Quick throw back in. Lead runner holds it second with one gone. Showed a lot of fight with two strikes in that AB. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground balls. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. And next for the Cubs, Pete Crow Armstrong fought off foul. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. Runners at first and second with one gone. Well, they’re really running up the pitch count in this first inning. Lots of confidence from this team that is perhaps the hottest in baseball right now. And that’s through their first strike and it’s nothing and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Two away. Just overmatched on that fast right there. And it wasn’t like he was set up for it by something off speed earlier in the at bat. Just came right after him with three straight and he had no answer for it. Dansby Swanson stands in. in there at the knees for a strike. Two on, two outs. That one ripped but foul. [Music] One ball squirts away a little bit. Pitch misses and now it’s three and two. Michael Bush in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Laboring here about to throw his 30th pitch of the inning. Swung on, popped up on the infield. Tenna under this one and that is that. So it’s no runs on a hit, no errors, and two are left. And now the Nets get their first opportunity. There’s no score. Back in Washington DC and our pitcher tonight, Jameson Tyion. What do we need to know here? Well, he’s been a real quality starter for his club. But coming into this one, what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year. It seems that they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone. So, we’ll see how right-handers do against him in this one. CJ Abs leading things off and takes a strike. Tap foul at the plate [Music] on the ground. Right side and it goes just foul. Swing and a pop off in foul ground. And a foul ball. [Music] That one way inside. Straighten him up a little bit. [Music] swings and misses and one down below the zone. Maguire on the first in time to get him. One away in the strike out. Well, I don’t think there’s a hitter alive that hasn’t at some point succumb to that pitch right there. It just looks like it’s in the zone the entire way and then the top spin and gravity take over in the blink of an eye and it’s just such a tough pitch to lay off of. Up now for Washington. James Wood just missed. Pitch is in there. One ball, one strike. Come on, James. Just missed. Two, bounced to the right side, slings to first in time. Okay, let’s check out the lineup. They’re facing a pitcher today who’s prone to giving up homers. So, we’ll see. We might get some big swings here today. Yeah. I think the key though and the reason why he gives up those homers is that guys are locking in. They’re aggressive and they have a high confidence level. So, I think if that’s the approach these hitters take with the stuff he’s got there on the mount, yeah, there’s a good chance that there’ll be some balls that fly a long way. But, you can’t get too big in your swing. Otherwise, you’ll be really frustrated after this one. Ripped to third, zips it to first. Inning over. Nothing do it for Washington. Scoreless after one. Back here in Nationals Park. Top of the second. So up now for Chicago, Michael Bush. Let’s go. Parker back to work. And there’s a strike on the outside corner. And the curve is down and in. Aside to home plate duty is Ricky Holiday. Boo. And something I’ve heard players saying about Ricky’s strike zone is how he will call the high strike. That could be something that’s tough to deal with, especially if you’ve got a pitcher out there coming at you with high velocity. Switch through that one. It’s a strike out. Here’s Nicoer. [Music] That one finds the zone. 0 and one. No score here in the second. Highf fly ball right field. Hauls it in for the out. Two down. Matt Shaw digs in now. [Music] That one fouled off and it’s fouled away. Ball one there inside. Got him looking as the fast ball runs back over the inside corner. Cubs are down quietly. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. Bottom of the second. Now it’s the second baseman, Luis Garcia. pitches in for a strike and it’s 0 and one. Well, the key to his success is getting ahead early in the count. He cannot afford to go deep in the counts. Doesn’t have a ton of swing and miss stuff, so he’s going to have to work efficiently. The pitch got him swinging. Gosh, here it is. Hit it. Three pitch strikeout. All fast balls. Man, he’s got a lot of confidence in that pitch right now. Josh Bell at the plate now. And that’s outside. And that’s ball one. Belling the duties at first, hitting fifth in today’s lineup. He joined the team as a free agent. right side. Suzuki makes the grab and a couple of quick outs. Robert Hassel. And here’s the rookie center fielder, Robert Hassel. I the third. Pitch misses. Ball one. Two out. Space is empty. And another ball. Next offering is in for a strike and misses inside. [Music] went with the sweeper for the strike. The count’s full. [Music] [Music] Got him looking. That’s a strike out. Nationals goal quietly. We’ll move to the third with no score. [Music] And welcome back to the ballpark. Well, here we go. Top of the third scoreless game. The batter now is Reese Maguire. And the first offering a fast ball for a strike. Oh, and one comes up empty. That’s strike two that started in and ended up on the outside edge just changing planes and very difficult especially for a left-handed hitter to track next offering way off the plate. 02 pitch that far out of the zone gives the hitter a little confidence that maybe he can climb back into this at bat. That’s outside. It’s two and two. just off the outside edge. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. Caught him looking for the K. Well, just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball right there. And I don’t think he was taking it, thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. Pat stands in now and watches strike one. Top of the third, no score. That’s excellent location. a fast right there early in this game. If he can do that all game, should be a good outing for him. Hammered on a line to the left. Base hit. So, a man aboard now with one away. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Here’s Kyle Tucker. worked to walk in his first trip to the plate. Now snap throw to first back in on a dive. Here we go. Runner. Yes. Runner on the go. Pitching for a strike. Safe at second. And he easily steals the bag. Here’s your one. One and one. Swing and a tapper then rolls fouled. One out and a runner at second. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. And downstairs out to short. Abrams and Tucker is retired. So now the injury forcing a substitution at second base. Cubs going to a pinch runner Vidal Bruhan. Now it’s the right fielder Seya Suzuki. Sigi he’s got a history of coming through into big spots. I know I like to talk about I’m not sure whether clutch actually exists, but you look at the numbers and this guy always seems to deliver in those spots. Started after it, appeal to first. Nope, he held back. Bruhan at second with two down. Well, I think it’s the ability to assess the situation, understanding what the pitcher has, what he’s trying to get people out on, and then being able to use the entire field. That one hammered, but pulled foul. If you’re a guy that can only hit to one field, then you’re really not going to be able to come through in clutch situations because pitchers are going to adjust. But because he’s able to use the entire field, that’s why he’s so successful in these situations. Swing and he breaks his back. And that is that. So one hit is all they get. We head now to the home half of inning number three. No score. And we’re back set for the bottom of the third. And it’s the catcher for the Nationals, Kar Ruiz. on the ground to third. Tosses to first. One up, one down. Third baseman. Jose Jose Tenna getting ready to hit. Swinging a miss. That’s strike one. Just a bit there. Not sure if he had a hard time picking it up out of the hand or if he was sitting off speed. Not even close there. And the count even one and one. And that’s outside. [Music] And that misses. And the count is three and one. [Music] line to the left center field and that’s going to fall for hit. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Showed some really nice patience in that at bat. Worked himself into a good count. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters they take so many reps in the cages, working on going to the opposite field and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did. and he did it perfectly. And now it’s going to be Jayen Lyle fouled off to the [Music] right. Popped up to the left into foul ground. tries to make the play, but it’s fouled. And that one is inside ball one, gets a piece and stays alive. [Music] Runner to go. Got swinging. [Applause] Here’s CJ Abrams to hit. He’s 0 for one. And that chops in for a strike. Ruer at second. Two down. Next offering is foul back. and down on strikes. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. No runs, one hit, no errors, and a man left. On to inning number four. We’re tied nothing. up. Back in Washington DC and now the center fielder Pete Crow Armstrong and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. You know, these Cubs just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone, and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see. But I think they have to fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. He’s been pitching well, but we’ll see what kind of adjustment the hitters make this second time through the order. We’ll know if he’s got really good stuff in this one or not. And that skips in the dirt. Foul ball still a one and two count. Slice the other way. That’s a base hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. A late jump. And I think that was the difference on the playbook. It’s not always easy seeing the ball off the bat. Something to improve. And now it’s Dansby Swanson. First time up was a pop out. There’s a strike. Over 80% of his first pitches are strikes. If you’re doing that, you could have a really good day out there on the mound. Cro Armstrong gets his lead at first with nobody out. Next pitch is outside. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. That misses. Two and two inside. Just missed. That’s a really good take. Watch it [Music] out. He fouls it off. Will do it again. And ball four, two aboard. Not the start to this inning he was hoping for on the mound. Now he’s going to have to really dial it up against the bottom part of this lineup to get out of this jam. And now the first baseman, Michael Bush, 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. And that’s for a strike. It’s 0 and one. There’s an opportunity to do some damage, but you’ve got to be selective. Make sure you get a pitch that you can handle. In the air, left side. He’s got it. And there’s one down. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. The pitcher’s his friend. He’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. So here’s her now fly to right his first time. at the dish looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning ending double play boo and a first pitch fast is in for a strike. Not sure if he was expecting for the pitcher to come right at him, but he got a nice cookie there and just watched it the entire way. That’s to third and it’s just fouled. That was close. Check swing. Appeal to first. No, he held up. Fourth inning underway. No score. Stays alive. Two on, one out. Got him. Ring clips the outside edge. A big strike out right there. And maybe a little controversial with the call. I think he got a little bit of favor on the mound. No question about it. It’s not exactly what you want to see in a big spot like that. And I’m sure there’s some chirping going on from the dugout making it clear that wasn’t his best call behind the plate today. And now Matt Shaw and that’s way high. And that’s ball one. This one in the air. Ruiz has this one sized up and that’s the third out. Cub strand a couple and we are still scoreless. Back here in Nationals Park ready to go bottom four and now up for Washington James Wood. Let’s go next. lifted in the air left field. Pretty well struck. Bruhan makes the grab and there’s one down. Up next for the Nationals. Here’s Nathaniel Low. Grounded out his first time up. Fast ball for a strike. Go and one. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. That’s a laser base hit. He was all over that one off the bat. It was headed for the gap all the way. And as a hitter, you love seeing those as you take your first couple of steps out of the box. You know you’ve got some real estate to run on. It’s such a good feeling. Nice liner into the gap right there. And now it’s Luis Garcia. And the first pitch misses for ball one. [Music] swing and a pop off in foul ground. Shaw makes a nice grab at a full sprint. Now that is first baseman Josh Bell. Here’s Josh Bell. He’s 0 for one. [Music] [Music] lays out and makes the play. Great diving catch to end the inning. That’ll fire up the dugout for sure. Time to go swing it. We go to the top of the fifth. Here’s Reese Maguire. Parker back to work. That’s in there. Strike one. The Nationals have some action going in the pen. Trevor Williams, the veteran right-hander, appears to be loosening up. Chaffen warming up as well. And a swing and a miss. There’s that slider. Just a really nice slider down and in there. He wants to get the hitter thinking fast ball. Speed him up and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement. Close one. Doesn’t get the call and it’s one and [Music] two. Cut misses. It’s a strike out. Man, I really like the ability to bounce back right there after not getting the call. He probably should have gotten you. didn’t let it affect his focus and he came back with another good pitch to get him swinging. And now it’s Vidal Bruhan entered the game as a pinch runner. First plate appearance for him here. And one Bruhan measures 5′ 10 in 180 lb and he’s usually in right today starting in left. Boo. If I was to break it down and make it simple, I would say right field’s kind of a chill spot compared to left field. Left field’s that second hot corner in my opinion. And another ball all tied up. And we’re in the top of the fifth. And a fast ball in there for a strike at 91. and he walked him. Now, daddy, go ahead. Run on base. So, here’s Kyle Tucker now. Scoreless here, but now he’s got to deal with a guy who’s got some power. Got to be careful when you’re talking about a hitter with this type of slug and these type of home run totals. Bruhan leads off first with one away. step off throw to first and he dives back in safely. And now the count is even. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. finish. Got him looking. And he’s up to seven strikeouts. And now the right fielder Sea Suzuki one for two. That clips the corner back door him with a breaking ball. Just got the corner. There’s nothing you can really do with that. Fouled off down the right side. Oh, the lefty closing in on 100 pitches. Strike him out. [Music] B. This one in the dirt in the dirt. Blocked. Still two and two after the foul ball. Eighth pitch of the at coming up. got him swinging. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. Cubs leave one. Still no score. We head to the bottom of the fifth. Now at the plate, Robert Hassel the third. Robert Hassel the third. Close but called a ball and it’s one and0. You know, these gnats, as this game goes on, have to be more disciplined at the plate. They’ve been chasing pitches outside the zone all game, and it’s led to some frustrating moments. They’ve been fooled quite a bit today. Next offering in there for a strike. And that is strike two. Two strikes. That’s to third in time to Bush and the leadoff hitter retired in the fifth. Now that is catcher Ruiz. And now it’s Keert Ruiz 0 for one. He grounded out in his first at bat. Hey, he’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average. And that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point. And a foul ball. [Music] fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. Base is empty, one away. Last half of inning number five. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Swing and a miss. And he got him. And that’s six Ks for him in this one. Well, he really filled up the strike zone in that bat until that final pitch. And as a hitter, you sense that they’re coming after you, not dancing around the strike zone. They want to attack and so you kind of get into swing mode and you have to protect the plate. That’s when you become really susceptible to something that makes you chase. And that’s exactly what happened right there. Next, the hit for the Nats. Jose Tenna just missed. Two down. Nobody on inside. Almost got him. That’s ball three. A rare three ball count here. He’s been throwing strikes all day. Got to be ready to hit if you’re in the box. [Music] And there’s the automatic. Back-to-back fast balls in. That last one called for a strike. Probably go away, but look for him to come back in there to try to finish you off. Next offering in there for a strike. Now three and two. Got it. Three up, three down. Inning over. Nothing doing it for Washington. And we’re still knotted at zero. A new arm into the game. The righty Trevor Williams. Well, he’s struggled quite a bit. So, this is another opportunity to get on the right track. He’s given up more than one hit pering pitch so far this season. Cro Armstrong in the box again, takes a strike. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Zack Brixie up and throwing. Henry also getting ready. Trevor, that one missing inside. Out to center. Hassel settles under it. Makes the catch for the out. And there’s one down. Swanson digs in. First pitch misses. Just missed. He’s clearly trying to work him away here. Both pitches off the plate. If you really want to put the ball in play, you’re going to have to stay back and drive it to the opposite field. Two. And another ball. And Swanson will take his base. That just came apart right there. four pitch walk and guy at the plate was not going to help him out by swinging at something out of his own. So up next, Michael Bush 0 for two in this one. Highfly ball out towards left field that skips over the fence. So it’s an automatic double. Off the bat, I thought they were going to score their first run of the game and that feels like a tough break. But look at the bright side. Really good contact at the plate. And now they’re working with not just one, but two runners in scoring position. So they’d love another base hit right here. Horner in now. Takes ball one off the plate. Next pitch misses outside and that’s ball two. He’s got a base open. So the pressure to come in and really attack this hitter not as great as it would be if the bags were sacked. Swing and a miss. Strike one. I think ultimately you want to tie him up, get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. Next offering is in for a strike. with a go ahead run at third and we’re in the top half of the six on the ground to the left. Sends it across to first. Play is made. Two out shot. So, two down now and here is Matt Shaw. That pitch gets the inside corner and that is strike one. Bush stands at second with two gone. [Music] And that’s will the swing. It’s a strike out. So a run on one hit. No errors and a man left. 91 and two scheduled to hit in the home half of the six. It’s the Cubs one and the Nationals nothing. Well, we go bottom six. And now here’s a speed threat outfielder Den Lyle. Oh, these fans definitely want to get involved in the game. All it’s going to take is to get the leadoff man or even a base runner on. First pitch doesn’t find a zone. lifted in the air right center field. Crow Armstrong and there’s one down. Now that is short stop CJ. CJ Abrams now went down looking on three pitches last time. Let’s see if he can be a little more aggressive right here. And the first pitch misses for ball one outside. Struggled a little bit in this one. Couple of strikeouts earlier, but doing a much better job in this at bat to get ahead and find a good hitter count at 2 and 0. And a foul ball makes the count two and [Music] one. Swings and pulls a foul to the right side. [Music] That one drifts inside. Home team down a run here in the bottom of the sixth. [Music] Ball four. Tried another curve but couldn’t locate it. Oh, a breaking ball in that 3-2 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. One gone runner at first. And now James Wood. Tyion with the move to first. Abrams dives back in safely. First pitch and he just misses. Lay off that pitch down and fouled off. Pretty good pitch to take a pass at and a one count. Just not able to square it up. The kick and the pitch. Runner goes. Strike in there. Throw. Save. And the tying run is now in scoring position. You know, nights like this when it seems harder to score, I like the call to put them in motion and try to steal the base. Ball’s not carrying. No home runs so far. So, trying to manufacture some offense like this may be the way to go. Hit on the ground to short. Swanson to first and he beats it. Everyone’s safe. Well, that’s one of those where you just have to tip your cap because he couldn’t have played that one any better. Stood no chance with the speed running down the line. Two on, one out. Nathaniel Low up to hit. There’s the strike. Oh, one’s the count. Sliced hard but fouled down the left side and a swing and a miss. That’s his eighth strike out of the game. So far, just one of those days for this lineup. You get a couple of runners on and you’re looking at having a big inning and that strike out right there just pours water on the fire. You look for the next hitter to step up and try to do something. pick up his teammate and his club. Now it’s the Nationals cleanup hitter Luis Garcia. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. Holds it in on the run and that is the inning. So the Nets leave a pair. They still trail one- nothing. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound. Andrew Chaffen bringing in the lefty with the left-handed hitter coming up to hit. Classic bullpen move right here. So, we’ll see how it works out. Well, one run game. And here’s the catcher, Reese Maguire, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Swing and a miss. 0 and one. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. Down middle for a strike and the count is 0 and two. Swinging a ground ball and the leadoff hitter set down to open the seven. Vidal Bruhan the next Cub to hit. Walk to open the ball game. First pitch misses. And that’s outside. Let’s go. That one’s spoiled and the count now two and one. Next offering is fouled back. Bases empty, one away here in the top half of inning number seven. Foul ball. Another two- two upcoming. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. [Music] Now he breaks his bat, fires over to first and that quickly two away. Got to feel pretty good for the pitcher. Absolutely saw him off. Bat explodes and then he makes an easy play on it. Pretty satisfying if you’re out there on the ball. Kyle Tucker the next come to hit. Let’s go outside low. One and0. [Music] And there’s a ball. Two count. Great hitter at the dish. If you’re going to miss, you’ve got to miss outside the zone. You miss inside the strike zone, you’ll be asking the umpire for a new baseball. Two outs. Right through there for a strike. Now one miss. Seiya Suzuki waiting to hit for the Cubs. [Music] Two down. Nobody on. And there’s Paul four. Perfect. His ability to draw walks has been something that’s been part of his career since day one. Seiya Suzuki the next to hit. One for three. First offering and it just misses. Chopped to third. and he bare hands it. Fires to first on target. He got him. Nice play. This is a beautiful play. The bare hand grab at third. Throws off balance to first base to end the inning. If you’ve played third base, it’s got to be one of your favorite ones to watch. And we’re back ready to go for the last half of the inning. Up now for Washington, Josh Bell. First base in there at the knees. Movement in the Cubs bullpen. Caleb Fieldbar. The left-handed reliever appears to be getting loose. Cabrera getting cranked up as well. Looking to get the tying run on base. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. Now in an 02 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake into center. Swanson makes his way towards it. Tracks it down for the out and a quick out number one. Yeah, that’s a tough play for the infielder ranging back into the outfield. There’s part of him that’s saying, “Hey, where you at, outfielder? Call me off.” But he stayed focused and made a nice catch right there. Passel in the box here. Lets that one go for a ball. Homeplayed umpires try to tighten things up a little bit. Nope. That’s down. [Music] That one called the strike and it’s two and one in the air. Left field down the line. dives and it gets by around second now as they still don’t have it to third. Not in time. He’s safe. Well, they call that an advantage count for a reason. You’re so much more likely to get something you can handle now. A huge bat in this game coming [Applause] up. And now the switch in catcher Karen Ruiz in there at the knees. That’s strike one. The tying run is 90 ft away. Swing and a miss. Oh, and two now. 02 count. Both pitches on the inside part of the plate. Hitter is thinking, I don’t want to get beat here. This is a good time for something off speed away. That one ripped. Base hit in to score from third. And it’s an RBI single. And this game is tied in the seventh. Such great concentration. Everybody on their feet knowing that you can come through with a good swing and there he doesn’t try to do too much. Here comes Craig Councel and we’re going to see a pitching change. That’s all for Jameson Tyion and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. [Music] The left-hander on now, Caleb Thebar. He’s been so good against lefties. One down, runner at first. Jose Tenna digging in for the Nationals. And that’s downstairs and outside. [Music] Check swing and he went and the count even at one. One and one. One away. Tie game. Go ahead run stands at first. Not close with that one. And a count two and one. Swings through that. Going to really need to hang in there with that front side against this left-handed breaking ball. fights it off. He’ll see another one away. Tie game. Go ahead run stands at first. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going and it remains two and two. [Music] Got him. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strike out. You can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one. Dalen Lyall will hit next. A little surprised we don’t see a pinch hitter here with the lefty lefty matchup. There’s the strike. All one’s the count. Ball one there. All [Applause] right. Swing a highf fly ball right field. That one back. That one on its way and it’s [Music] gone. His first homer of the year. It’s 3-1. He just sparked this home crowd in a big way. What a swing. A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. Back to the top of the order. Here’s the shortstop at the play. CJ Abrams a walk and a pair of strikeouts and first offering is fouled off. There’s a strike. Two gone. Base is empty. But three runs across here. The bottom of the seven. And one and two. Two strikes. Yeah, there’s a ball. And that’s in the dirt. And they’ll do it again. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. [Music] And it’s ball four. He missed down low. That’s a great at bat. He saw a lot of pitches and earned a walk. Second walk of the game for him. And he’s been really patient at the play, a game plan that he’s sticking to. He’s just not going outside of what he’s looking for up there. Wood in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. That one at 95 missed up top. And now it’s even one and one. Snap throw to first. Abrams back on a dive. Abrams off of first with two away. And that one fouled off. That one missed. Little bit low. 3-2. Two out. Runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. [Music] And down on strikes he goes. Third out. Nats pick up a pair in the inning on this two-run homer. It’s now a 3-1 ball game. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Zack Brixie. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Digging in, Pete Crow Armstrong. He’s a guy Chris’s highlights include some of the best throws from the outfield that you will ever see. Definitely one of the best arms in the sport. That one finds the corner. That’s strike one. Yeah, the infielders and the catcher can never give up on a play because if this guy thinks he has a chance, he’s going to throw it from the warning track if he has to. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. going to miss. Struck came out. Chased the fast up the ladder for strike three. So he’s down on just three pitches. Watch the first two and then chased after the third. Yeah, not a very good at bat right there, Boo. But that was also some excellent pitching. The O and 01 pitches were both right on the edge of the strike zone, so it’s not like he watched two cookies go by. in a great job of expanding and making him chase the O2 knowing he would be in protect mode. And here comes Dansby Swanson. [Music] There’s the strike. It’s been tough for the offense so far, but you can’t get frustrated. You got to find a way to shake it off. go up there and relax. That’s the only way you’re going to be able to put runs up on the board. Swing and a chopper out to short. Abrams tosses the first. Two up, two down here in the top of the eighth. Those plays can be tricky. They’re routine, but that doesn’t mean it’s always going to be smooth. He delivered a good play right there. Michael Bush digs in now. There’s the strike. Next offering way upstairs. That’s down and in. Two down, no opening on. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. Just threw that fast ball by him. Elevated. And if you’re not looking up in that location, very difficult to catch up to, especially with that velocity. Two outs. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. and a 3-2. Hit in the air left field. Wood sizes this one up. Brings it in for the third out. pitching back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, Drew Pomez. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpin can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. 345 do up for the home team. And the batter now, Nathaniel Low. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. Edge of the zone for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. Pomerance, a tall lefty, 36 years old. And they traded for him earlier this year. The O2. That one just misses. Too close for me partner to take that O2 fast ball, but for whatever reasons he let it go by. He’s still in the at bat. I don’t think he’ll let the next one go. Yeah, that skips in the dirt on the ground to first. He’ll do it himself. One gone in the bottom of the eighth. Now batting second base Luis Garcia. Luis Garcia getting ready to hit. 0 for three in this one. [Music] Flares it into the outfield. Fair ball. Now batting first. One down. And now the switch hitting first baseman Josh Bell. Ground ball left side could be two. Off balance feed. There’s one onto first. Double play. And that’s the inning. No runs, one hit, no errors and no one left through eight full. It’s the Nationals three and the Cubs won. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Kyle Fit again. And he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. Nico her will come up to hit. Picked up an RBI in his last at bat. still their only run of the game so far. That misses ball one. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. And that’s in there for a strike. And now it’s either [Music] the one-1 is fouled off. bows it off. Still one and two. Yeah, the slider misses down and away. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. Comes the two. Got him. And a strike out for the first out here in the ninth. Well, that right there is what you want to see out of your closer. Come in and close the door. Cancel any hope that that opponent has in making some type of comeback in the ball game. Tell you what, that helps him settle in and that helps everybody else relax a little bit to get these other two outs. Shaw the next to hit takes outside. Now it’s one and0. Base is empty. One away. You’re in the top of the ninth. On the ground to short. Abrams on the run. throw to first and they get the out. Well, nice job by the shortstop to feel that on the back hand and gather himself, get his feet underneath him. He had a long throw, but he knew he had plenty of time to take that extra step, secure the grip, and finish the throw. One out left for the Cubs. Here’s the catcher, Reese Maguire. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. That one outside and that is ball one on the inside corner for a strike. So a foul ball makes it one and two. The Cubs down to their final strike. Two down to ground ball and this should do it. throw the first in time. Ball game and the Nationals claim the win here behind some great pitching and defense. 3-1 ball game. Quick game. We were looking for a little bit more. It seemed at points the offenses were going to break out, but a total of four runs combined. Really good pitching and defense on both sides. Just a couple of key swings making all the difference. And your final 3-1 for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon. I [Music]
