Dallas Stars Fire Pete DeBoer, Search Begins for New Head Coach | DLLS Stars Podcast
New ALLCITY BALL KNOWER Bonus for NBA Finals & Stanley Cup! https://promotion.allcitynetwork.com/all
The Dallas Stars dropped a major breaking news bombshell Friday morning, as they announced the firing of head coach Pete DeBoer. He was hired in the Summer of 2022 and led the Stars to the best record (most points and highest points percentage) over that span, including three consecutive trips to the Western Conference Final. However, following a second-straight WCF loss to Edmonton, which included DeBoer pulling Jake Oettinger in the first period of Game 5, questions arose about the future relationship between the head coach and the players, including Oettinger, who has an eight-year contract extension starting in July. Join the DLLS Stars Podcast with Craig Ludwig, Sam Nestler, Owen Newkirk and producer John Andersen as they break down this massive change and look ahead at who could potentially be the next head coach of the Dallas Stars.

I liked Pete but I think it was time for a coach with a more physical and gritty approach to the style of play for the team and someone who will really get our team to sharpen our skills on the 5v5. Our passes look sloppy and our puck control was really sloppy. Looking forward to the future
Based on recent market chatter and the nature of NHL coaching moves, there are a few candidate profiles the Stars might target—though, of course, much will depend on fine details like contract clauses, buyout status, and whether a coach is actively seeking a change.
Below are some illustrative options:
1. *Veteran Playoff Performers with Proven Track Records*
• *Peter Laviolette* is a prime example. He has a storied resume—including a Stanley Cup championship and multiple deep playoff runs—and his no‐compromise, aggressive style might be exactly what the Stars need to finally get over that final playoff hump. Of course, his current contract situation (or recent exit from his previous role) would have to be favorable. If he’s available on the open market or at least flexible via a buyout clause, his pedigree is hard to overlook.
2. *Recent Cup Winners with a Modern Tactical Edge*
• *Mike Sullivan* (known for his time with the Pittsburgh Penguins) has demonstrated an ability to harness elite talent and succeed under pressure. His modern approach to game strategy and player management aligns well with a team loaded with young, gifted forwards and a strong defensive corps. However, his availability would largely depend on whether his current club is in a position to let him go or if his contract comes up for renewal soon.
3. *Coaches with a Track Record of Development and Adaptability*
• **Jeff Blashill**—despite his mixed playoff resume with the Detroit Red Wings—has shown that he can instill a disciplined system and get the most out of young talent. His style tends to balance structure with offensive creativity. If his contract status makes him a free agent (or if the Stars can negotiate a reasonable exit from his current obligations), his resume as someone who’s worked with rebuilding or reloading squads could make him an appealing option.
4. *Up-and-Comers and Proven Interim Leaders*
• In addition to these marquee names, the Stars might turn their attention to successful assistants or interim head coaches who’ve recently steered their teams into extended playoff runs. While names may not be as instantly recognizable as the veterans above, these individuals often have lower financial and contractual hurdles—and they bring fresh perspectives that might resonate with a locker room looking to shift gears. Teams like the New York Rangers and others mentioned in the recent coaching carousel have seen interim candidates shine under pressure, and those profiles might well be attractive, especially if they’ve demonstrated an ability to win crucial games when given the opportunity.
In all cases, the Stars’ management will be looking at a combination of on-ice philosophy, personality fit, and the financial/contractual pragmatics. With Dallas being an attractive market containing a core of talented young players, they might have enough leverage to engage a coach of high pedigree even if that coach is coming off a successful resume elsewhere—the situation is fluid, as coaching moves often are.
Ultimately, while these names (Laviolette, Sullivan, Blashill, and even a top interim candidate) are speculative possibilities, the front office will assess not only their past success but also how each coach’s style fits the roster and what kind of deal can be structured given current NHL contract norms. This process includes evaluating buyout clauses, expiring contracts, and a coach’s willingness to relocate for a fresh challenge—all factors which become more salient when high-profile names are in the mix.
Looking ahead, you might also consider how the Stars’ emerging roster and playoff expectations could invite an owner’s mandate for a coach with a more modern, adaptable style—a nuance that might favor leaders who have successfully straddled regular-season consistency with postseason innovation.
I think John might be underestimating the chaos that is Chill.
I think DeBoer wanted to get fired and take the $ because he knew he couldn't win with this team.
Pete Schottenheimer?
Ott would be interesting. Ready to break out my old #29 jersey. 😂😂
They did him dirty by firing him right after the last head coaching vacancy was filled. I'm sure it was tied to the exit interviews, but the timing was nasty
Otter… Steve Ott
