Reviewing Oilers vs Stars Game Five
welcome back All right so as I’m starting this review uh there’s a minute and 21 seconds left in the first period of the Abbottzford home game against Texas I’m not there I’m home Just using that as an example of why I stay home and watch this cuz otherwise 2 and 1/2 hours from now I start watching and I mean when you already know the result right Um and there’s no way to stay away from a result There just isn’t Now when you’re in a building fil full of people there just isn’t Especially when they know who you are which in my case there’s a lot of people that’ll come over So I’ll be able to go to the game on Saturday Why you ask Because Dallas uh didn’t win a period tonight So one of the debates that’s been out there is about which period Dallas has outplayed Edmonton in in this series And I I think when you’re having to say look I think they were pretty good in that one period you’re probably not winning the series Um I’m going to stand by what I’ve been saying too I think that uh this was just a bad matchup for Dallas It it’s just it is it’s a bad matchup for Dallas They they do not have what it takes to to defeat Edmonton Maybe next year Sure maybe Uh but that’s why I have been looking at this series and thinking you know how different could it be if Winnipeg had got here Would it have been a little bit closer Maybe probably But at any rate Skinner at one end and at the other we will talk about Jake Cottoner Uh so Ehol’s in Staturer’s out I thought Matias at home had a very good game for the Oilers tonight Uh Bourke was in for Dallas Not overly prominent in this game other than a penalty he takes Uh Cece has a rush chance this blocked We get a power play for the Oilers This is where Bourke takes his high sticking penalty And I put that there was a high stick because I know there’s been complaints about the officiating but you have to call high sticks Uh so Dryidle fires one wide pucks cleared And then at 231 Cory Perry uh burries a net feed Uh McDavid and Dry Cidle with the assists So this one’s from the doorstep It is the first shot but it’s Cory Perry on the doorstep It’s not like he hasn’t scored like 15,000 goals from there in his lifetime And that is the 100th career playoff assist for Conor McDavid So it’s one- nothing Edmonton One problem Dallas had throughout the series was chasing the game They had the first goal zero times in five games Uh the Oilers look for another Johnston as a rush is defended Bousard Dane near miss The shots are two to one for Dallas 6 and 1/2 minutes in Crowd’s pretty darn quiet Uh Walman has a wrist or deflect wide And then at 709 brutal line change by Dallas helps to set this up Nobody’s back defensively to cover And it’s a fast break goal for Yanmark Arvdson and Wallark Walman with the assists Wallark How far back am I going for that Wman with the secondary assist And it’s five hole But it’s it’s a fast break goal And I I don’t know what is supposed to do here So Pete Dbor calls a timeout I agree and then he yelled ater that he was out I I disagree Auer was going back to the net Otter’s their starter and like I understand that like Otter didn’t necessarily have a good game in that that was only the second shot and it was the second goal but for people who’ve been saying throughout the playoffs that D’Vor should be out as coach I thought it was an emotional decision that he made there In fact I thought emotionally it got away from them a little bit there in the first period and that absolutely cost you So uh the Oilers look for another and they find one at 8 minutes and 7 seconds Uh Jeff Skinner buries one from the doorstep That was the sixth shot on net for Edmonton already Um in that it was only 58 seconds after they had two shots Now they got six Henrik and Frederick with the assists So at 8:07 of the first period it’s three nothing Edmonton And then I’m already texting my wife I I don’t think I’m I’m going to need uh need to worry about uh Saturday and whether or not I’m going to stay able to watch a game Obviously I felt at that point yeah Edmonton’s not allowing four And that’s all I kept thinking was Edmonton’s not allowing four tonight So Yanmark nearly adds another McDavid has a slot shot that’s held The Stars press with nine minutes left And at 11:40 Robertson goes posting in Johnston with the assist That’s on a turnover And so at that point it’s like maybe it’s three to one maybe Right Dallas has got themselves back into the game Maybe uh Steel with a high stick gives the Oilers a power play So this was the second and final power play for Edmonton tonight Both of them are high sticks You absolutely have to call high sticks Um early clear McDavid fires one wide Pucks cleared again There’s a short-handed rush by Johnston The Stars prevent a setup and they kill it off So Edmonton gets nothing out of their power play Uh Captain’s denied the Stars rush Uh lots of cross checks during board battles in the Dallas zone and I was like “Okay so cross checks aren’t penalties tonight.” Good to know And I’m talking like full two-handed just in the corner and and down like this too Right right onto the the right right in right in here Look painful but at any rate they’re not penalties tonight Uh the fans call a trip The referee doesn’t so he’s told that he sucks Uh Duchain has a rush chance that’s blocked Much better second half for Dallas but they’re down three to one after one Second period Des Smith’s still in the net because one of the debates was whether or not Auer would stay in And on Sports Net’s coverage Kelly Rudy agreed with pulling Ouer Kevin Baxa did not I agree with Baxa I think you stay with your starter Wasn’t his fault I don’t think on either goal The defense lets him down on the second one On the first one it’s Perry from the doorstep Good luck on that Anyways teams trade early turnovers The Oilers have a threeon two that’s broken up The Stars then draw a power play really really important for Dallas at this point in the game Uh Ransen has a shot that’s blocked and cleared Harley has a shot that’s blocked and cleared as well Uh the power play’s killed off No shots reach the net and there’s no momentum for Dallas coming out of that Kane has a wraparound chance that’s held Uh the Oilers press at 5 minutes Harley has a backhander that goes wide The Oilers rush Dry citles denied as to Smith’s looking to bail out Dbor here Pete Dbor making this pretty ballsy decision to switch goalies and to Smith at this stage playing pretty well So the shots are five nothing Oilers at seven minutes Uh Nurse has a one that he fires wide on a rush Marchman has a tip shot that’s kicked aside The Stars press at 9 and a half minutes Uh Duchain de Marchman gets blocked by Walman Bourc can’t bury one and close The Oilers get pinned down and they take a penalty So this is that again this is that opportunity right Dallas down by two Uh there’s an early clear Antinins denied and then at 127 rope hints roofs one from the slot makes it 3 to2 the assist to Johnston and Harley meaning that now dismiss the goalie of record because he allowed the third goal and now Dallas has two that means the goalie that would take the loss here becomes to Smith Uh the teams trade rushes Ben has a net feed that’s picked off and then at 1428 when you see 97 barreling down on you as a goalender you just got to be like well I hope he falls down Uh he didn’t and he buried it Uh McDavid burries one on a breakaway from Ekholm So there’s Matias Ekholm on the board and uh that makes the score four to two in favor of the Evston Oilers So Dallas gets within one The Oilers answer 2 minutes and 1 second later Stars press with four minutes left McDavid has a shot that goes through to Smith but Ranson and clears it before any Oiler can get anywhere near it And it stays 4 to2 after the second period Third period Um four third period comebacks for Dallas in these playoffs So maybe right And 38 seconds in Robertson Uh he scores from Rantinon and Harley This was a bad goal Uh it’s five hole from a distance so that’s one that Skinner really needs to save A bit of an oof there So that makes it a four to three score Stars then look to tie it Arbitson has a rush chance that’s blocked And then at 321 this is why you throw the puck at the net Kane just throws it at the net and it goes in off Lindell’s skate So Kane gets credited with a goal his fifth of the playoffs Dryidle and Walman with the assist So Jake Walman had himself a bit of a game tonight Had a couple of helpers and suddenly it’s 5 to3 And that takes all the excitement out of the Dallas crowd mostly Anyways the Stars would press to respond The shots are 4 to2 for Dallas at 4 and 1/2 minutes Uh the Oilers press at 5 minutes Uh Ben has a sharp angle shot that’s held Stars press at 9 minutes The Oilers though they’re blocking They do ice the puck So that’s one thing to keep an eye on But it’s Ben don’t break defense by the Oilers Dallas had the puck in Edmonton zone a lot This is why I never cover offensive zone time and I don’t even analyze it because offensive zone time doesn’t necessarily mean a lot When a team’s letting you have the puck in the offensive zone they’re not giving you a path to the net They’re keeping it to the outside You don’t do any damage out there So Johnston to Ben near miss Petravic has a one-time that’s held We get some pushing The fans call one the referee does not Rantin beats out an icing and then the Stars guilty of an icing with 314 left Uh Kenan has a rush chances kicked aside The goalie pull would happen with two minutes and 40 seconds left and then it’s an Oilers icing with 1 minute and 33 seconds left Not that Edmonton’s giving Dallas anything at this point Uh and I I will say I got a kick out of this too There were two and I I’m just saying what I saw on my TV two Oiler fans amongst the sea of Dallas fans in the zone behind the empty net for Dallas and they are just bouncing up and down in the final minute of the period and I did find that kind of entertaining because it’s just a sea of Dallas fans and two people in Oilers jerseys bouncing around so if that’s you I saw you uh but yeah so at 1949 Kappaan really ends this uh gets the six to3 goal into the empty net and that’s your final score Edmonton wins this series four games to on So we have our rematch for the Stanley Cup final I will be previewing that final tomorrow So we’ll take a look at that final and we get that rematch Uh for Dallas they led no minutes and no seconds from games two through five in this series This was a massive mismatch and Dallas is out So the shots on that also reflect it 9-7 Oilers in the first 96 Oilers in the second five to four for Edmonton in the third four shots in the third period for Dallas in game four Four shots for Dallas in the third period in game five And that I think is where we can ask the question about Pete Dbor’s job because when Dallas needed to come up with those big moments it wasn’t there in back-to-back games They weren’t even getting to the net Uh power plays Both teams go one for two The hits 45 to 41 for for the Oilers So they outshot Dallas Kept him to 17 shots at home in an elimination game and they out hit him as well Uh Skinner 14 saves on 17 shots I didn’t think he was great tonight but didn’t have to be He only faced 17 shots Uh Auter saved zero out of two and Smith saves 17 out of 20 So Dallas’s season is done uh they move on to next year and the Edmonton Oilers will be playing Florida That series will start on Wednesday So I have this really odd experience between now and Wednesday of there there’s no NHL games to watch So I I don’t know I It’s weird I don’t know how I feel about that Don’t be surprised when I review AHL games on this channel in the meantime and in between time And that’s it for another edition of Stampede Wrestling But uh yeah the Oilers are in the finals So congratulations to the Oilers They were the better team Uh one thing I will say is you can’t look back at this series and say “Well I mean they won but no no this was the better team won and the series is now finished.” So Dallas has to figure out uh what they have to fix for next year The good news being Dallas a lot of their players are in their prime or very young and some of the veterans have expiring contracts So I’ll talk about Dallas over the next couple of days I’ll be talking about Carolina tomorrow Uh I always leave an extra day after a team gets eliminated because it feels like the wound’s a little fresh the day after So yeah a couple days from now we’ll talk about Dallas but let me know your thoughts in the comments section below As always don’t forget to hit like and subscribe in the event you may not have done so already Uh thank you guys so much for all your support And yep that means that a team I root for will not win the Stanley Cup for the 44th year out of 45 that I have watched the Stanley Cup playoffs So it’s something And don’t mention Boston because they beat Vancouver and I wanted Vancouver to win that final So there you go Uh but thank you guys so much for all your support I will talk to you again soon
We get a rematch of last year’s Final and Dallas is out for the third straight Conference Final.

All this series proved is that Dallas is just Carolina of the West. No heart at all. Tired of seeing them hyped up as a cup contender.
It's been 32 years. Finally Canada will get a Stanley cup this year.
Dallas is another really disappointing playoff team
I love when the Stars fans chant "Dallas…Sucks! Dallas…Sucks!" after they score.
at what point this season did Edmonton seem like a much better team than the Stars?
correct answer: THEY DIDN'T!
I suspect that DeBoer is gonna get some bad karma next season for that "decision". 3 years and the weak Stars defense still can't help Otter win. This has to be the most humiliating of their conference finals losses to date.
watching ottinger get pulled was wild. you made that guy suffer through 6 goals against on sunday just to pull him after 2 facing elimination. not that i’m mad though, lets go oilers
What a great intro and segue that was!
It was quite funny to watch this season and playoffs. I think every round, a majority of the analysts consistently picked against the Oilers. I picked the Oil to win in 6 against LA, I picked a 4-0 sweep against both Vegas and Dallas, which means I was wrong in both instances, but only by 1 game a piece. It seemed pretty obvious to me that the Oilers weren't going to lose much going into the cup finals. Even with Florida's adjustments, I think we are going to see a Oilers victory in 5. Cup Year!
Walman is a wizard:
On ice for exactly one even strength GA,
Had 2 ev Assists,
Finished the night a "-1"
xD
Down goes Dallas….again
Can you explain/do a video on mismatched teams? Like you say Winnipeg would've matched up better, but why? Dallas beat them so does that mean they were mismatched?
might consider adding a SOG aggregate chart when a series ends – basically a row for each game, SOG for each period, and total, the total it out on an additional row on the bottom of the chart. would be interesting to see, especially when a good player is injured partway through the series, or there's a goalie change, etc.
Once again, Connor McDavid and Edmonton remain as Canada’s last hope of a Stanley Cup.
My only concern about that game is that yes Skinner was good enough because they had 17 shots against, but if that was like game one and they had 30 shots would it have ended like game one as well?
So Rantanen goes supernova against his former team then does a disapering act the very next series 😂
Corey Perry is older, and not the same player he used to be. But people talk about his goal scoring like they forget he used to put up 30+ on a decently regular basis.
Quoting Ed Whalen @11:26 just brightened my day!
The one man hot stove
Crosschecks have been so common for the last few years its crazy
I feel bad for Oettinger none of those goals were his fault
I was expecting a lot more from Dallas … But I'm NOT complaining. Go Oilers!
I look forward to seeing you tomorrow at Abbotsford Centre Shannon!
Hey Shannon – would love to see you do a video on good coaches that haven't won a Stanley Cup
Here's a starting list
Peter DeBoer
Bruce Bordeau,
Rod Brindamour,
Gerard Gallant,
Alain Vigneault
I'll miss the cleavage behind the bench
