The 2023 Draft Class Looks To Be FOUNDATIONAL In Their Rebuild | Will Smith READY For Next Step
the 2023 NHL draft might be franchise defining for the San Jose Sharks you’re Locked on Sharks your daily podcast on the San Jose Sharks part of the Locked On Network your team every day hello welcome to Locked on Sharks the premier hockey podcast covering your favorite team in the Bay Area my name is JD Young caretaker at the Reef also the co-host of Locked On NHL i want to thank you for making Locked On Sharks your first listen proudly part of the Lockdown Network we cover your team every day and if you want to be an everyday all you have to do is just follow along wherever you get podcast or you can watch on YouTube as well and today we’re going to be looking at Mike Greer’s first real draft class the 2023 uh draft we’re going to be reviewing their seasons um and kind of seeing what’s next for a lot of these players so um this class of course uh really I think is going to be a big defining uh piece of what these sharks are building towards um and is on its way to uh to looking pretty good so uh let’s start by just as a quick reminder of the draft class of course since this draft only happened less than two years ago everybody is still technically with their franchise um the first round the Sharks picked uh Will Smith forthr overall Quinton Musty 26th overall uh the second round they got Casper Holton in 36th the third round Brandon Sabota uh 71st overall the fourth round they picked Luca Canoni 123rd overall the fifth round they had two picks where they picked Ax Solandine 130 and their Eric PCamp 132 and then in the seventh round they picked David Cle at 196 and Yiggor Ramachevski at 203 so we’re going to spend some time kind of talking about each one of these guys and what to expect for them uh you know round out their season and what kind of to expect for them going forward um and of course we have to start with uh Will Smith who um spent this year his first full se or his first season in the NHL um of course there was much uh conversation we’ll say about whether he should have gone pro whether he should have gone back to Boston College how the Sharks handled him the first half of the season turns out um Will Smith pretty good at hockey i think we were it’s safe to say after his first full season um with the Sharks he played 74 games this year uh of course he uh had you know some games at the beginning of the season where they uh kept him out part of his uh strength and conditioning program and as they kind of ramped him up to get him ready to become an NHL player he finished with 18 goals 27 assists 45 points uh as a 19year-old with 127 shots on goal average time around 1551 Cors 46.92 goals for 48.94 his card was very fun to update uh because when I did this right around kind of the midway point of the season um he was averaging like 14 minutes a night and you saw that jump up to almost 16 minutes a night um like the goals for and course for like made huge jumps as well and um Smith by the end of the season really established himself you know that second half of the the year was a much better player than he was the first half of the season and that’s something we talked about last year where we you know when he signed I said he’s going to get his butt kicked for a whole year but he’s going to be a better NHL he’s going to be a better hockey player than if he’ just gone back to Boston College uh where he would have been the big man on campus right and just gone uh had a really fun time just destroying kids uh you know and stuff but he’s a better player for it right and I think Will Smith has uh established himself as a foundational core piece for the San Jose Sharks going forward um you know and I I think now the big question is okay can he do it at center right and that’s that’s the big thing with Greer right is that he does want Smith to uh um move him to center and he’s literally the words out of his mouth we drafted him to be a center so asking me the big question now is you had success the second half of the season kind of once you got your footing underneath you um playing on the wing you know we saw him play with you know Celabbrini we saw him play with um Eklan we saw him play with Wberg like we saw him play with a bunch bunch of different types of players um but I think now can you be the guy on the line right can you drive the line is going to be the next big question for uh Will Smith and I I think free agency is going to be a big part of trying to find some players who can play with Will Smith this upcoming season and yes there’s plenty of fun players coming in the pipeline we’re going to talk about uh a couple of the wingers here in a second but um you gota you got to support Will Smith now and that’s kind of one of the reasonings why I do think they’re going to be somewhat aggressive um and trying to acquire talent um that can play with Will Smith uh because yes we we we believe Quinton Musty’s probably gonna be pretty good we believe Halton is going to be good but they’re not going to be good next year right and they’re not going to play uh you know probably not going to play NHL games this year or if they do it’s going to be a very small amount and I think it’s a lot to ask uh Musty or Halton and uh or Shernes or whomever to come in and be impact players for the Sharks um right away right that that’s and for Smith I think right we we we saw William Eron a couple years ago struggle to drive a line because of right the players that he had to on his line so um but yes so I do think it is important for the Sharks to find players to play with Will Smith so uh but so far like you got to be feeling really great about where Will Smith is going uh what we’ve seen from him is he is just scratching the surface of what type of player he’s going to be uh and he’s had a very nice world as well so uh for team USA uh so got to feel got to feel pretty good about Will Smith and his his future here so um next guy here Quinton Musty uh so he’s of course a 26 pick um split his time between or not split but he start of course started the season OHL got a couple games with a Barracuda at the end of the season um we know of course the musty uh season was a very weird one where he held out from uh Sudbury when he got traded missed uh the first month of the season came back played a handful of games broke his hand came back uh you know about six weeks later and then uh played the rest of the season with Sudbury and they got knocked out in the first round uh despite some of the issues with Musty and his playing time this year um he still put up 30 goals in 33 games had 29 assists and 154 shots on goal was a little bit banged up uh for Sbury as he went into their playoffs not the most effective playoff run from Musty you could tell he wasn’t 100% but um you know I think for the season he had in Sudbury it was uh definitely one that um he was productive but maybe of course definitely not the season that he expected um he did get some time with the Barracuda at the end of the year um so including his playoffs he had actually played four games uh three regular season and one uh one playoff game where he had three shots on goal during that time um for Musty right this is now he’s now a professional hockey player like he will be on the Barracuda next season um and I know there’s people already like can he make the Sharks next year and stuff like that um the best thing for Quint Musty and I’ve watched a lot of Quinton Musty games is to spend I would almost give him the William Ecklan season that we saw in the AHL right of just let him play the whole year in the AHL next year is going to be the best thing for him let him round out his game let him hopefully earn some playing time in all situations um because I actually think he could be a really sick penalty killer uh with his speed and his transition ability and his shot um like let him let him round out his game in the AHL and kind of get that full year of playing professional hockey yes I know he’s played a bajillion games in the O right with their schedule but you know it’s still a lot of it’s kind of similar to to the AHL where it’s very kind of weekend heavy i So I do think his game will translate i don’t think you’ll have problems kind of with that translation uh you know like sometimes you see from the college kids where you know once they hit that kind of game 40 45 they start to hit that wall i don’t think we’ll see that from Musty because of um like his conditioning and and the way he plays but um I do want to see him just spend the whole year in the AHL and by the end of it just kind of be one of those top guys for this Barracuda team because I do think this Barracuda team will continue to be uh very one very talented even with some of the losses they’re going to have um and two I do think he’s going to be a a huge part of it and um the last thing I want to do is rush him into the NHL because you don’t have wingers for Will Smith or whatever i think that’s this is a guy who needs to get used to playing uh against professional hockey players right i think he’s got all the talent in the world i think he’s a hard worker uh I think he has the right mentality i think he just needs reps and games against uh professional players and before we really start for him to kind of talk about making an impact in the NHL and that’s okay like that is okay for for Musty to take that route it is not the worst thing in the world for him to spend a whole season playing in the AHL and hopefully fingers crossed be dominant by the end of it so uh we’re going to talk about some of the rest of the guys here including Casper Haltonin and kind of the expectations for him going forward uh we’ll also talk about Luca Canyone and some of the late round picks here uh in just one second ever check your bank account wonder where did all my money go between dining out online shopping and entertainment if you’re like me just buying snacks time to subscribe right now as we continue to kind of uh do our research and get you ready uh for the simulated off season where I’m going to do everything I I think Mike Greer should do uh 100% going to get it wrong um but we’re going to continue next week looking at kind of mid-tier free agents so we’ve looked at all the top end guys and start kind of digging into the mid-tier class continue get you ready for the 2025 NHL draft um all that fun stuff so make sure you’re following along wherever you get podcasts and of course you can watch on YouTube as well all right uh next dude uh of course the second round pick Casper Haltonin haltonin in 38 regular season games with London uh 21 goals 20 assists 152 shots on goal uh of course was the MVP uh of the OHL playoffs uh with his especially with his performance in the finals uh could have actually there was a very strong argument for him to be the MV back-to-back MVP i know Ethan Cowan won it last year uh Holl and also monster playoff run last year uh as well but um he’s starting the Memorial Cup here i think it’s actually Saturday is is the London it’s either Friday or Saturday is London’s first game um is that’s kind of the last thing that they need to do for to check off that box and uh move on but um Haltonin is a player who there’s always going to be questions about him kind of with with the way he drives play etc etc um but I do think he is a really nice a very high-end complimentary piece um he also of course did start the season with the Barracuda um six games two goals two uh assists 12 shots on goal in that time uh Casper Holton is going to continue to fire the puck at the net but um with Halton if you know I I do believe watching him in London kind of he started the season a little slower there i know he’s coming off an a concussion that he suffered with the Barracuda before going back little slow but as the season progressed he continued to uh play stronger and stronger and again the playoffs where he was absolutely on fire and when Holton gets on fire there is uh that man can score a lot of goals um and is that is an NHL caliber shot from him right uh one of the hardest shots you will ever see um from a junior’s player but I do believe his role right i don’t think he needs to be a play driving type of guy right um I’ I’ve always kind of put him in the Kevin Leank role right of can you score on the power play can you help out a little bit here defensively um and stuff and I I think with fore uh with Halton’s size um and skill I do believe his forcheing is going to be a massive asset for the Sharks his physicality um you you see that you’ve seen that in the AHL you saw that in the OHL a ton and I do think that’s going to translate uh for him it’s always going to be uh conditioning right especially as a power forward type of player i’m not saying he’s a power but just that kind of a bigger body type of player who likes to play physical it’s going to always be a little bit about conditioning with him um but uh I do believe uh he is a guy who can be a super awesome Kevin Le Bank type of player of you’re gonna play you know kind of middle six types of minutes but you’re going to have maybe you’re going to have big impacts when when you do type of of uh again not the same type of player as Lebank uh I think Colton is a you know I think he hopefully turns out to be a little bit more well-rounded but that type of role for him so um he’ll be next year on the Barracuda and again I I’d like to see him continue to work on you know one his skating again I’m not like a skating expert but if I think your skating needs some work it probably needs some work especially that first step from him that first burst and I think uh getting here in San Jose and and being able to work on that um we’ll probably see some improvements from that from him really quickly but um again right there’s going to be some a lot of pieces potentially moving out of the Barracuda and there’s going to be some prime opportunities i think he’s going to uh have a chance to to quickly grab a a role there so um next of course was the third round pick Brandon Sabotto uh Sabotto played for Boston University this season um 33 games seven goals two assists 41 shots on goal uh so mostly kind of played third or fourth line center for for Boston University which is fine and that’s still kind of what you you project him to be for um the Sharks eventually you know several years down the line but um I thought as a a true freshman you know I thought he really kind of handled his his you know his assignment well um he was playing in all situations for Boston University like playing on the power play playing on the penalty kill um and kind of getting a chance to play with some of the upper guy excuse me some of the upper players while um you know in those those key moments there so for him I’d like to see him kind of next season really kind of grab a a bigger role and hopefully be more of a middle six type of player for them um you know I’m not sure what their lineup and who you never know with with college hockey with the landscape and how guys are coming and going but I would I would expect him to kind of be more of a middle six guy and be you know hopefully continue to see that production go up um you know as he gets more and more minutes here so uh and hopefully kind of be more like um potentially you know 15 goal and see that uh maybe those assists go up a little bit more uh as he kind of earns some more and more ice time but um guy again Sabot is definitely a you know has to kind of figure out his role and what he’s going to be good at but I think there’s still a lot of a lot of talented aspects from him to kind of look forward to so um before we hit the break we got a the Canyone Hive stand up uh Luca Canyone what a season in the AHL 64 games 16 go franchise record for defenseman 16 goals 36 assists 115 uh shots on goal for the San Jose Barracuda um also played uh games for the San Jose Sharks this year uh he scored in six games he had two goals seven uh sorry two assists excuse me uh zero goals seven shots on goal played 1739 a night which is nothing to sneeze at for a uh fourth round pick in the 2023 draft uh 41.88 Corsy 4 36.14 uh goals for um Canyone i think again even the the biggest queen bees of of the Canyon hive couldn’t didn’t expect what we saw from Luga Canyon this season right um a guy who almost almost made the team out of training camp um stepped in with the Barracuda and from day one was a huge huge part of it uh and what they did was a driving force for them on the blue line um and you know made an really nice impact in the NHL as well uh I do think for Ken Yod next year I I do expect him to start on the Barracuda as he continues to kind of round out his game especially in the defensive zone where again right being 5 foot n he’s never going to be uh the most physical dynamic defender but um just using his smarts using his creativity and uh positioning and continuing to iron that out as well as uh I think being a little more consistent scoring threat at five on five but if he does that like we might be looking at fulltime NHL player Luca Canyone by the second half of the season so um really excited about Ken Yon and where he’s going and um if he hits like again these small defenseman when it comes to the NHL they’re either never make they don’t make it or if they make it they’re really good there’s like no in between and I still feel really good about Luca Canyone and and his outlook uh I just one of my favorite player like one of my favorite players and I think uh it’s nice to share the Canyone hive uh more people in the Canyon hive here so uh but yeah absolutely outstanding season um and I think we’re we’re just kind of scratching the surface with Canyone what he can do uh for the Sharks so uh we’re going to dig into some of the uh later round picks here uh a lot of defenseman to kind of tackle here so uh we’ll get to that in just one second all right before we finish up especially talk about Eric Pamp uh do of course want to thank you guys for making the locked on Sharks your first listen for your second listen check out the allnew locked on NHL game night every game every night until a Stanley Cup champion is crowned get local analysis on a national scale find NHL game night on lock on NHL on YouTube or wherever you listen to podcast all right so Axel Landine played for uh four teams uh his hometown HV71 in the SHL we had four games zero goals zero assists with zero shots on goal uh he was loaned out to the hockey Alfenskin where he played for the IK Oscar Hammond um sounds like Oscar Meyer anyway um there he had 45 games two goals six assists with 49 shots on goal uh then he once the season was over he signed an atto amateur triyout to play with the Barracuda where he got two games in uh zero goals zero assists zero shots on goal uh he currently doesn’t have a contract with anyone right now i would expect him to uh I assume he’s going to sign his uh San Jose Sharks ELC at some point here uh and my guess is he probably plays on the Barracuda next year would be my guess maybe he starts with the Witchaw Thunder um in the ECHL but my guess is he’s probably over here in North America uh landing known for his defensive defensive skills uh physicality um and I I do think his game will translate much better in North America uh kind of like Philip E said where I think he’s just he’s just kind of built for North American hockey a little bit more um I didn’t get a chance to watch a lot of him over in Sweden but watching his games um here in North America he fit very much in right and kind of that again that quiet calm defensive I’m just going to kind of do all the little right things here probably not going to hear my name a lot on the broadcast but uh I do think he’s got a a chance to kind of just be that nice calming presence on a blue line and if you partner him with a more offensive uh player I think he has a that’s kind of the the recipe for success for him so um but yeah I expect him hopefully to be here in North America next season um where he can help this Barracuda team in some of the pieces that they have so um next guy who was picked uh two picks later um Eric Pamp fifth round pick remember he was an overager um he should have been was eligible to be drafted in 2022 draft uh got skipped over and drafted in the fifth round um transferred to University of Denver had 44 games 11 goals 24 assists 151 shots on goal was always kind of the second guy be behind uh Zillium and uh Paul Camp had himself a really really nice season with the University of Denver um there’s still questions on on what he’s going to do next right um and I believe right we we know David Carl’s going to be back i would assume he probably goes back to Denver for one more season uh where especially with Zam guy gone he’s probably going to be the guy on the blue line and could have a a real massive season with Denver um or maybe at um rookie tournament in July maybe he signs his ELC there and becomes a a professional hockey player there but um Pole Camp looks like a potential diamond in the rough for his ability to play a two-way game um massive shot from the blue line uh I love his physicality um he was giving it to Ryan Leonard in the Frozen 4 um that is not an easy assignment and he did not back down to it um really good you you especially saw this um in the US or not yeah the USHL and then uh his first season um with Biji State of um just shutting guys down at the blue line like just I’m not giving you an inch as soon as you try to cross the blue line um excellent rush kind of defender in that way of just shutting things down there so I’m really excited about about Paul Camp and what his future could be as a again a potential diamond in the rough type of player for the Sharks so uh next guy uh is David Cle congratulations to Mr cle as he uh just won the uh Clark Cup with the Muskegan Lumberjacks in the USHL um the captain here 58 games 19 uh goals 26 assists 145 shots on goal uh guy spent a lot of time in the USL he’s going to be going to uh North Dakota now um to continue his next step i still think he’s going to be kind of a long-term project for the Sharks and um my guess is he kind of mostly probably tops out as an AHL type of player but still more organizational depth for you and having depth in your organization is never a bad thing so um and yeah so I’m again probably grinder type of guy maybe pots you a couple goals here and there but that’s kind of where I expect him to kind of end up for the the Sharks so uh then finally the other seventh round pick uh Igor Ramiseki uh 58 games in the KHL with Dynamo Moscava uh seven goals eight assists 75 shots on goal um still only kind of getting about that 10 to 11 minutes tonight which is what you you see kind of how they treat their young players there so I think the big thing for him next now is can you earn more ice time and be a bigger part for Dynamo and I know Dynamo is always a good team over there but I think that’s kind of the next step for him is is to kind of be that guy we’ll see if he ever comes over and if the Sharks ever sign him to contract or anything like that with the KHL players like you you kind of own their rights forever so um but we’ll see i think if he has a big season this year um could be one of those things where maybe you start to kind of him coming over could u maybe kind of pick up some traction so um that’s the 2023 draft class so um you you got to feel really good about the direction of this draft right um you have what looks like one extremely foundational impact player in Will Smith um looks like you might have some other impact players and Quint Musty and Casper Holson uh Luca Canyone as your potential kind of diamond in the rough as well as Eric PCamp as well and then um some more organizational depth and guys like Brandon Swabota Axel Landine etc like there there’s there’s a lot of of pieces and stuff here to like from the Sharks and the direction that they are going um so yeah I mean overall this this feels like it’s going to be a a pretty foundational class in the Sharks uh as they kind of continue to build this thing and and turn this thing around so um that’s going to be it for me today we’ll be back next week as we continue to uh dig into free agency again going to be focusing more on that um the middle class of free agents and I think where Mike Greer is probably going to do most of his shopping uh so make sure you’re following along wherever you get podcast and of course you can watch on YouTube as well follow the show on Twitter Facebook and Instagram at Lockdown Sharks follow me on Twitter and Blue Skyfry Hole till tomorrow or Monday whenever bye friends

Building this team via the draft is a pretty slow process, but GMMG looks like a superb drafter. With most players, they take about 5 years from the draft to the time they're pretty good NHL players. A good class gets you 2 NHL players above 3rd pair or 4th line. This class likely nets 3 or 4. The 2023 class shows itself in 2028. The 2024 class (beyond Macklin) is looking promising, too. And that's another class looking at 3 or 4 guys.
GMMG's fist draft doesn't appear to have any sure things, but maybe 1-2 will make it. To get almost half a roster in 3 drafts is really impressive.
So keep acquiring and using the picks. It'll take longer than anyone probably wants, but it'll also mean the Sharks are good for a very long time. Like well into the 2040's
Will Smith playing center was the plan until we lost on the Schaefer sweepstakes. Now I feel like we'll see him more as a wing that slots in at center when needed with Misa on the way.
Well said.
I would argue an average draft nets you one impact player (top 9 F, top 4D, or a NHL caliber goalie) and 1-2 decent depth players.
above average draft nets you 2 impact players with one being a core foundational piece, and 2+ depth guys. and elite draft would be 2-3 impact players 1 generational talent and 1 core piece, and 3+ depth/supporting pieces.
20 draft is below average,
21 draft is average,
22 looks to be borderline average,
23 is above average borderline elite,
and 24 is clearly Elite.
As long as 25 & 26 are at least above average sharks will be ridiculously loaded with young talent.
Grier and his scouting team is clearly one of the best in Hockey. Now I’m curious how he manages the cap, acquiring pieces to compliment the young core and diversify the skill on the team. Through trades and FA
Halttunen seems like he is one of those weird guys who is pedestrian in the regular season and comes alive in the playoffs! That’s not bad for a 3rd line RW! In the future.
what do you think of trading will smith to improve the defense and then take misa at #2?
I'm always underwhelmed by Halttunens regular season. Then he's a playoff monster. Could he be the Sharks' Justin Williams?
Since GMMG has taken over as GM the draft has been a boon for the Sharks franchise. I know he was only GM for a couple days, but even the 2022 draft has gone very well.
2022 Draft:
Moves Made: Traded the 11th pick for the 27th, 34th, and 45th picks.

AHL: Bystedt, Havelid, Lund, Furlong
NCAA: Muldowney, Laubach, Barnett, Fisher
2023 Draft:
Moves Made: Traded 6RD pick for Blackwood, Moved up in the 3RD (71) round using their 3RD (94) and 4TH RD (100) picks, Traded 7th RD (206) to Penguins for 2025 7th RD pick.
Selections: Will Smith (RD1), Quentin Musty (RD1), Kasper Haltunnen (RD2), Brandon Svoboda (RD3), Luca Cagnoni (RD4), Axel Landen (RD5), Eric Pohlkamp (RD5), David Klee (7RD), Yegor Rimashevsky (RD7)
NHL: Smith
AHL: Musty, Haltunnen, Cagnoni, Landen
NCAA: Pohlkamp, Svoboda, Klee
KHL: Rimashevsky
2024 Draft:
Moves Made: Traded their RD1 (14) and RD2 (42) for RD (11), Traded their RD3 (85) and RD6 2025 for RD3 (82).
Selections: Macklin Celebrini, Sam Dickinson, Igor Chernyshov, Leo Sahlin Wallenius, Carson Wetsch, Christain Kirsch, Colton Roberts, Nate Misskey, Yaroslav Korostelyov
NHL: Celebrini, Dickinson (?)
AHL: Chernyshov
Allsvenskin: Wallenius (?)
NCAA: Kirsch, Misskey
MHL: Korostelyov
WHL: Roberts, Wetsch
Drafts Picks Since 2022: 26
NHL: 3 (? – Dickinson)
AHL: 9 (? – Landen)
NCAA: 9
KHL: 1
MHL: 1
WHL: 3
Allsvenskin: 1
Gone: 1
That is one heck of a record with possible 9 more coming in the next draft.
Michael Misa is going to Boston U, so he’ll likely be in NCAA for 1-2 years which is great. So we don’t need to rush Misa to the NHL.
