so just about set now and getting the nod for the White Socks Jared Schuster and Chris he’s hoping for some better fortune moving forward well he’s been a very dependable starter for his club and what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him and it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball maybe it’s the release point maybe it’s the motion but just some way somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side jonathan India the lead arm batter as he looks at ball one fast ball for a strike [Music] [Applause] the one-1 is fouled off come on punch him out breaking ball inside ball two swing and a ball lifted in the air shallow right field and there’s one away and here now the lineup for the Royals and so far this year this has not been a very good offense well in this day and age if you can’t slug and get on base that OPS has to be at a certain level if you’re going to produce runs give your pitchers an opportunity as they’re facing tough offenses as well now here’s Bobby Wit Jr he’s already set a new career best for stolen bases in a season chris slider clips the corner wow just a beautiful back door slider right there if you’ve got any chance of hitting that pitch you have to wait until the absolutely last millisecond just a tough pitch to hit and not an easy one to throw either inside almost got one out base is empty [Music] swing and a miss struck him out two gone now he’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field he was out in front there just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track good pitch for the strikeout two down base is empty mikel Garcia will hit next pitch misses inside and that is ball one garcia in his second season hitting third in the lineup and he was born in Venezuela and the one two out space is empty strike two so far all we’ve seen in this at bat are fast balls look for him to slow it down right here ahead in the count fights it off he’ll see another [Music] that’s too low and that’s ball two oh this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the at bat i’m sure there’s some times where a pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single ouch that one got him he had two strikes on him and he hit him vinnie Pasquentino steps in for the Royals first offering and it just misses to first and they’ve got him picked off to second and he’s out and that is the third out of the inning royals bats are quiet there time for the White Socks to go to work no score back after this on the show back here on the south side and today’s starting pitcher Daniel Lynch well this guy’s just been filthy out there on the mound hitters batting under 200 against him and they’re just having a hard time squaring up anything doing any type of damage the only way he hurts himself is if he gives up the free passes and surrenders a rare home run but outside of that it’s going to be a tough job for the opposing lineup today mike Tman the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one and that’s off the outside edge now two and 0 [Applause] swing and a line drive that’s a base hit into right field so runner aboard to start the inning well when you fall behind in the count you’ve got to come into the zone and then guys have a better chance of hitting the ball hard like you did right there my draw [Applause] chase Maid steps to the plate for the White Socks squirts away a little bit and the runner holds tman gets his lead at first nobody out let’s go let’s go that’s the third ball lead runner to second it’s a two on and nobody out couple of singles back to back just found a way to slap that ball down the third baseline that’s really excellent bat control and it kind of goes back to all those drills you see hitters do off the tea where it’s placed in different spots that was just nice first and second no outs miguel Vargas steps to the plate for the White Socks [Applause] and a count one and two swing and a popup makes the grab one away batting for time to check out the lineup for the White Socks getting guys across the plate not exactly a forte for them this year as their offense is in the bottom third of the league in runs scored it becomes extremely frustrating and then what happens is guys press especially in runcoring opportunities and situations on top of that I mean you really make it harder on your pitcher he feels like he’s got to be perfect to go out there and win a ball game or at least to put the team in a position to win a ball game so and they’ve got to figure out a way to relax get those runners across when they have them on and especially when they’re in scoring position i wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated he just having a hard time catching up that one the other way and it goes just foul [Applause] one two swing and a miss struck him out of the slider and there’s two gone definitely made him chase a little bit out of the zone right there i don’t think that’s a strike if he takes it pretty textbook pitching get ahead in the count get the guy in the box on his heels and then force him to chase your pitch where he doesn’t have much of a chance to do any damage josh Palasios steps to the plate for the White Socks [Applause] and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike two on two [Applause] [Music] [Applause] outs that one hit to right and that ends the inning white Socks strand a couple scoreless after one back at right field at the plate Vinnie Pasquantino shuster back to work that clips the zone and that’s strike one well we call that keyholeing even though it’s right there and looks pretty good if he doesn’t love it he’s not going to swing that early in the count [Applause] swing and a ball drilled in the air towards right center field taylor flashes the leather on the run and catch every day during batting practice these outfielders get about 10 minutes of balls in the gaps they practice this and when the game comes they make the play perfectly he swings and fouls one off [Music] swings through the fast ball up in the zone threw that fast ball right by him slightly elevated that’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound see if he continues to climb the ladder no score here in the second that one lifted to left benendi sizing this one up two-way down batting six first baseman number 14 two out space is empty jack Kaggle Leone steps in for the Royals looking for his first big league hit right here come [Music] on and there’s a foul ball right through there for a strike that one misses at a count one and two caught him looking for the K kc down in order we’ll go to the bottom of the second no score here on the south side we head to the bottom of the second alex the rookie first baseman Tim Elco off the plate ball one just missed [Applause] and a foul ball makes the count two and one the other way this looks like extra bases around first heading for two and he’s there with a leadoff double well that was one of those high percentage advantage counts where batting averages are just so much higher nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line you know hitters they take so many reps in the cages working on going to the opposite field and it doesn’t always translate into the game but right there it did and he did it perfectly runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game tries to check his swing but he makes contact reaching down makes the catch runner tags at second he’s in there got the pitch that he wanted just a little bit quick front shoulder open backside collapsed a little bit and the launch angle not where he needed it to be so the go-ahead run in scoring position michael A taylor steps to the plate for the White Socks good defender he’s been inconsistent offensively you have to find a way to score the runner from third especially with less than two outs wait for the pitch you want and hit it as hard as you can [Applause] fast ball is outside one away with a runner at third next pitch misses two balls no strikes on the corner for a strike swinging a foul out of play next offering is downstairs and it’s fouled off they’ll do it again [Music] and a pitch fouled off again and it remains three and two and down on strikes he didn’t make it easy for him on the mound but they still get the strike out that was such a great opportunity to grab the lead you had the infield back all you’ve got to do is just put the ball in play on the ground and you drive across a run that’s a frustrating outcome for the hitter now I’ll still have a chance but it’s probably going to take a clutch hit with two outs and a bat like this is almost over as it begins in this situation you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be you just got to hope that you can make contact and the slider just misses really good take especially with two strikes swing and a miss struck him out that K is his third of the game sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results and right there thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam well here we go top of the third scoreless game now it’s the DH nick Loftton highf fly ball out towards left field and a foul ball next offering is fouled back got him and he’s registered three KOs in this one drew Waters stands in the switch hitter batting right swinging a ground ball rohos fires over to first first two batters retired here in the top of the third batt center fielder Kyle Isbel and now it’s Kyle Isbel you talk about elite defensive players especially in the middle of the diamond and this guy is at the top of the list and first offering is fouled off and you played behind guys and they loved having your speed out there defensively one of the things that we talk about is how much pitchers enjoy having those elite defenders behind them and the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump and defense shouldn’t either hittingwise you can struggle you can lose your mechanics but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented in that way and this is what this guy does gets a piece and stays alive that misses off the outside edge and it remains two and two spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another quite the matchup we’re seeing here six foul balls in this at bat alone really making them work out there hacks and misses it’s a strikeout nothing doing for the Royals still no score set for the bottom of the third here’s Mike Tman designated hitter Mike Tuckman and the first offering a fast ball for a strike [Music] and he dodges that fast ball one ball two strikes the count fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts well one of the things that hitters will do is they’ll look for that red dot on the baseball as is coming in to let them know what the pitch is and if they see the red dot it’s typically a slider but when a guy’s got a really tight one with high spin rates very difficult to determine and that’s probably why we saw a swing and miss right there just a nasty pitch and now Chase Mitro offbalance throw in time and a couple of quick outs batting third baseman Miguel Vargas miguel Vargas steps to the plate for the White Socks little bit low one and0 bottom of the zone and a cold strike that one drifts inside good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with you’re better off taking that pitch cut on and missed and it’s a strike out and that is the inning 1 2 3 go the White Socks and we’re still knotted at zero and we’re back here’s the second base Jonathan India jonathan India india in his fifth season 28 years old and they went out and made a trade for him last season he swings and misses at the first pitch 0 and one and a foul ball got to be careful here this is the type of hitter that can punish you even with pitches outside the zone and a ground ball to first he’ll do it himself and one gone in the fourth as they get the lead off man he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball good execution and stepping in is the speedy Bobby Wit Jr struck out swinging his first time rips one to right and foul ball the Royals yet to pick up a hit here rips that one to right and there’s two he was all over that fast right there i tell you what if he gets under it just by a fraction of an inch or a little bit more that’s way back now Mikel Garcia tap foul at the plate two down nobody on top half of inning number four next one in the dirt swinging a foul straight back out towards right center field taylor long run on his horse can’t get there base hit now batting right fielder go ahead run on base digging in vinnie Pasquantino fly to center his first time he’s 0 for one shuster checks over to first and he’s back and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter garcia off of first with two away come on runner on the go pitch misses go to second out there and the inning is over well trying to get in the scoring position but a great catch and throw to end the inning that’s the way to pick up the pitcher [Applause] bottom of the fourth now here’s the cleanup hitter for the White Socks andrew Benendi to Ben Hendi swinging a foul back that’s out of [Music] play swinging a foul back and that’s out of play that one not close now one and two next offering is [Applause] outside swing and a miss struck him out really love the pitch sequence right there i’m telling you what pitcher and catcher on the same page right now right fielder Josh Palasios [Music] and next to hit for the Socks Josh [Applause] Palasios out of line out towards center dives what a play now batting number 30 so a great diving catch and that was only possible because of the route he took to get there right Chris yeah statcast shows us just how efficient that route to the ball was in fact that’s about as good as it gets pretty much a direct line to it and perhaps he was a wide receiver in a different life i don’t know but man great job to hold on all the way through the dive as well no fumble caused by the ground the one right side hard hit the flip to the pitcher covering and he has thrown four shutout innings nothing doing for the White Socks and we are still scoreless back here on the south side ready now for the fifth inning so up now for Kansas City Vinnie Pasquantino all right Chicago back to work only two hits allowed so far tonight Boog so I don’t think that one will disrupt his momentum all that much you know he’s really been on top of his game commanding his pitches all night long go ahead run on base and now it’s Salvador Perez to the plate fly to left his first time and a fast ball in there for a strike at 91 nobody out runner at [Applause] first and that one fouled off ball one there doublebarreled action in the bullpen bryce Wilson up and throwing number 68 also throwing runner at first with no outs [Applause] here fights that one away still one and two and that’s down and away two balls two strikes [Music] keeps the bat going with a foul [Applause] ball the two-2 out to short and that one finds its way through lead runner holds up they’re at first and second with nobody out a perfect example right there that plate discipline it pays off the deeper he gets into account the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle now the White Sox manager is out of the dugout and will make a move to the pen jared Schustster departs and that’s an excellent job from the reliever in the starting role today gave him some length back with a new arm after this now pitching here’s a new pitcher from the pen cam Boozer still pretty early in the ball game so this bullpen has some work ahead of him best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him first and second no outs jack Kaggleó digs in now and there’s one thing on his mind this at bat get that first hit at the big league level and that’s downstairs ball one and that’s downstairs and outside tough spot right here a couple runners on two ball count you can’t nibble but you have to execute and finish your pitch if you leave something out over the plate it’s going to bring in some runs [Applause] two-1 now nope you don’t want to get beat by a fast ball in and he spits on that one nick Loftton in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here fouls one away and now three and two instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended tied him up a little bit slightly up slightly in oh can’t pick it up cleanly still manages to throw and it’s in time it wasn’t the smoothest play you’ll see today but they still get the out now the designated hitter Nick Loftton so now the DH spot Nick Loftton golden opportunity right here and fouled [Applause] off slashed foul down the right side that’ll hook off into the seats i think ultimately you want to tie him up get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield that one inside look out two on one out that’s a strike out good looking sweeper there most guys are very aggressive when they see the stakes out there on the base bats and can’t understand why he wasn’t ready to swing the bat you’ve got to be ready to swing the bat in a situation like that with the go-ahead run in scoring position now at the plate Drew Waters grounded out his first time up off the mark there and it’s one and0 [Applause] two on two outs that’s a point with the sweeper he’s got a base open so the pressure to come in and really attack this hitter not as great as it would be if the bags were sacked right through there for a [Applause] strike pitch misses there and now three balls and a strike kyle Isel in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here two outs and a popup right side foul territory and that’s the third out royals strand a pair halfway through this one still no score and welcome back to the ballpark ready to go for the last half of the inning leading off Josh Rohawks josh Rohox and a foul ball you know these White Socks looking to string together better at bats when they have runners on but it just hasn’t happened for them yet they’ve had their chances with runners in scoring position but nobody’s been able to deliver a big hit in those situations and you got to give some credit to the other side as well they’ve been able to get out of a few tough jams but frustration is mounting for this offense no doubt got him swinging make it seven strikeouts for him just a mid90s challenge fast ball right there not much to it and I’m sure he’d love another swing at it because it was in a very hitable location those are the swings where you can sometimes start to question yourself as a hitter and say “How did I miss that?” But you know it happens that one foul hard the other way ball tied up last half of inning number [Music] five swing and a pop off in foul ground and he makes the catch two up two down just pulled off of it a little bit right there of that front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed if he does that he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left lee stands in here leaves that one off the inside oh he’s got to be pretty proud of this outing so far sometimes guys cower coming into a ballpark like this but he has attacked hitters pitching on the road like this is very impressive this has been a treat to watch [Music] and it’s fouled away way high [Applause] fouled off and they’ll do it [Music] again slice the other way that’s a base hit and they have their first base runner since the second inning love how he let that ball travel trusted his hands nice job of going the other way tacman next is the designated hitter Mike Tacman [Applause] strike on the inside corner it’s 0 and one that breaking ball drops in for a strike just a really nice slider down and in there he wants to get the hitter thinking fast ball speed him up and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement foul ball it stays nothing and two lee leads off first with two down to the inning in the air right field pretty well struck pasquantino going back makes the catch on the edge of the track the White Socks leave one sixth inning coming up still nothing on the scoreboard we’re back and they make a change to start the six the new pitcher Bryce Wilson and something to be aware of the long ball has been a little bit of a problem for him this year here’s the center fielder Kyle Isel he struck out swinging at his first atbat up and in and that’s ball one movement for the White Socks in their bullpen steven Wilson up and loosening in the pen eiser the lefty warming up as well foul ball there here’s a 1-1 that one off the bad part of the bat just a lazy fly ball and Ben Tendy able to make the grab up next for the Royals second base so the Royals batting order turns over jonathan Indie at the plate bowl for two in this one this one in the air right field makes the catch for the and there’s two away now batting shorts stop Bobby Wit Jr now it’s the shortstop Bobby Wit Jr taking high in the draft he’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform but at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level drilled out towards left center field that’s well struck that’s not coming back his second homer of this series it’s one- nothing first pitch hacking and it paid off for him in a big way well he went up there o looking to do damage i think he had his sights set on that pitch he went and got it and circled the bases here’s the third baseman Mikel Garcia and there’s a ball [Applause] here’s a swing and a line drive and a base hit to right field and that keeps the inning going now batting right fielder Vinnie Pascantino and now Benny Pasquentino one for two [Applause] and takes low from ball one now move to first garcia back on a dive [Applause] and that’s in there for a strike and now it’s even just missed he’s getting a little frustrated out there on the mound getting hit around a little bit let’s see if he can settle himself down [Music] and the 2-1 hammered but foul one impressive outing so far continues to pound the zone pitch after pitch and he’s been able to stay down that’s what’s been key inside just missed a change up missing two and one that one is upstairs now in this three ball count down in the ball game you got to be very selective take your walk if they’ll give it to you and boy that was the pitch 3-1 you want to be really aggressive on the fast to run chases that one out of the zone that’s his eighth strike out of the game chris third time through the order and a couple of quick outs for the starter yeah he’s been very frugal today economical with the pitch count benendi now it’s Andrew Benendi to hit who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts yeah that’s fouled off [Applause] next offering upstairs definitely a frustrating day for the offense but when they look at it this guy’s had his best stuff been painting the corners working on the edges and changing speeds just a difficult one you tip your cap and now one and two it really looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today good fast ball excellent slider but they’ve not been able to commit to one velocity and stay there he takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it down in order go to White Socks they’re down one- nothing back at right field we go to the top of the seventh salvi steps into the box now catcher Salvador Perez slice to right fair ball takes the turn he’s digging for second the throw in in safely it’s a double and his second hit well clearly he was ready to hit right there anytime you rip a line drive the other way you feel really good about what you did at the plate you trusted your hands you let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it that’s great work right there now it’s going to be Jack Kagleon and the first pitch misses for ball one perez leads off second with nobody out and another ball two balls no strike just missed and there’s the automatic and there’s a foul ballunch out to take that pitch that’s as close as it gets looking to get the tying run on base popped up to the left into foul ground makes the grab and there’s one down now batting number 30 Tim Elco steps to the batting second base here’s Josh Rojas josh Rojos first pitch just misses and a swinging to miss well I’m impressed with that challenge pitch right there even with this slim lead this guy’s not afraid to go right after these hitters grounds one to short tosses to first and the White Socks go quietly shy Socks held in check here they still trail one- nothing now pitching for the Steven Wilson will take over here on for his 20th appearance of the year steven Wilson now here is Kyle Isbel center fielder Kyle Isel that one fouled off one ball two strikes o2 pitch that far out of the zone gives the hitter a little confidence that maybe he can climb back into this at bat this one in the air Wilson and it’s caught for the good hard fast ball up in the zone right there they look really good coming in but it’s so hard to get on top of as a hitter now it’s the second baseman Jonathan India 0 for three with two fly outs and a ground out that one almost got him [Music] one down space is empty movement in the bullpen number 68 appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves this would be his major league debut eizer a left-hander also throwing line drive makes the grab for the second out it’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove but you will get some high fives you know when you make great contact you feel like you’ve done everything right but in this game of baseball not everything is in your control and to the plate for Kansas City Bobby Whit Jr his homer earlier is responsible for the only runs they’ve scored in this one yeah forget small ball they’re kind of living and dying by the long ball so far in this one oh and one [Music] foul ball that misses one and two to count hot shot to third royals set down in order so no runs no hits no errors and no one left last half of the eighth coming up it’s the Royals one and the White Socks nothing back now new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth Andrew Hoffman these are the spots where Levers really make a name for themselves late and close there’s not much margin for error but at the same time there’s a reason they’re put in these situations white Sox making a move for a pinch hitter Edgar Caro and he would be the tying run boo so we may see him try to launch one if he gets a good pitch to handle first pitch doesn’t find the zone and another ball activity in the Kansas City bullpen carlos Estz the closer of the staff is throwing [Applause] swinging a foul out of play chopped on the ground garcia on the run throw to first and they get the out big play there to get the lead off man that’s a huge defensive play in the late stages of the game it might not be the most challenging we’ve seen today but it needed to be made going to take is to get the lead off man or even a base runner on and there’s the strike good heater at 98 one-run game bottom nine that’s a ball he was looking for some firewood right there but I tell you what if you’re not out in front swing at that pitch you’ll be looking for a new [Applause] bat stays alive could be extra bases now he turns and heads for second here comes the throw and he’s out trying for two got to love the hustle and the attitude there to try to stretch that single into a double but unfortunately thrown out at second base he was so close to being in scoring position defense outstanding job of the pitchers really attacking hitters trusting what the catcher was putting down and trusting the players standing behind him to make the plays defensively sometimes you
