hello and welcome thanks for joining us sunday baseball on the show it’s the Arizona Diamondbacks going up against the Cincinnati Reds first pitch coming at you right after the break and Maddie Brown just about set to go and on the hill in this one Andrew Abbott Singy he’s been outstanding and should be fun to watch well when you have a guy that can limit the opponent to very little run production you have a great chance to win a ball game when he takes the mount he’s just having an outstanding season so far you hope he can maintain it because if he can he’ll be in a nice conversation at the end of the year corbin Carroll leading things off and takes a strike up and in and now it’s even one and one second pitch of the game it was a good one but doesn’t get the strike call we’ll see how this umpire zone shapes up today ground ball to the right side but it kicks fouled and that’s down and away really good take especially with two strikes cuts and misses it’s a strike out thought it was a pretty good pitch top of the strike zone we’re seeing more fast balls in that location hitters especially with two strikes have to be ready to pull the trigger an outstanding hitter in Catel Marte and that one hammered that’s back there and that one is gone a solo shot that’s his fourth home run of the series and that gives him a lead it’s one- nothing first pitch swinging and he got the fast ball he knew exactly what to do with it too elevated fast balls especially away are like putting a ball on a tea hitters do a lot of cage work they’re comfortable hitting off the TE’s and he was comfortable right there hitting that ball opposite field for a home run one out base is empty stepping in is the switch hitting shortstop peraldo Peromo first pitch just misses perdomo measures 6’2 in hitting third in the lineup and he was born in the Dominican Republic one out base is empty that missed by a lot and it’s two and 0 and a strike on the outside edge [Music] next offering popped in the air right field stevenson makes the catch and there’s two down now the Diamondbacks lineup as put together by Tory Lavello they do a lot of things well in this offense Singi they control the strike zone they make pitchers work hard for outs and as a result one of the better OBP teams in the league well what I love about it is it’s an organizational philosophy whether you go to instructional league whether you go to spring training you see these players even during batting practice when it doesn’t matter they’re practicing that type of approach boo and when you have that filtering through the organization even when you call off a player they step right in and continue with the pattern that they have established at this level which ultimately leads to a lot of success you know you translate on base percentage it’s basically this teams that have a high on base percentage they don’t make outs at a very high rate as my buddy Joe Sheen says OBP is life and now the count is even swings through that one it’s a strike out catel Marte with the blast for Arizona it’s now one- nothing it’s Major League Baseball on the show back here at Great American Ballpark today’s starting pitcher Brandon F oh you can see his whip is a little above the league average not bad but I think in this one he’s going to need to control that a little bit better try to limit hitters from getting on base stay in that windup instead of the stretch and when he does allow base runners be able to throw a pitch he’s going to get a swing and miss get out of the inning so that a base hit doesn’t do more damage and put his team behind the eightball now a chance for TJ Fredel off the plate inside one and0 next offering pop foul off to the right out of play [Music] and that’s pushed foul off to the left and out of play and the right hander deals gets a piece there we’ll do it again [Music] and that one is popped in the air shallow center and that will fall so a man on base to start the inning i don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock and ready to hit now for Cincinnati santiago Espino down the middle for a strike it’s 0 and one let’s keep it going [Music] down low it kicks it low and now a man into scoring position definitely trying to work down and get that double play ball but it got away enough to erase any chance of that good job of moving up in the scoring position now a hit could make that wild pitch really [Music] stand at second tap back to the mound tosses to first one gone bottom half of the first here’s the lineup for the Reds one guy leading the way offensively for this club right now Ellie Dea Cruz and we’re talking about a guy who has great wheels and then puts them to good use he’s the team leader in stolen bases and runs scored man using his speed to just get in scoring position and then just flying home when the guys behind him put the ball in play i absolutely love watching him do it because he causes havoc on the base pass that one pulled foul so here’s a fun note on Ellie he became the youngest player in high a ball to homer from both sides of the plate in the same game and it gets better he did it again two games later those are the type of games that tend to get you promoted in the minors [Applause] runs it up to 96 to record the punch out just overmatched on that fast ball right there and it wasn’t like he was set up for it by something off speed earlier in the at bat just came right after him with three straight and he had no answer for it and next will be the cleanup hitter Tyler Stevenson and the first pitch misses for ball one come on right through there for a strike ruer at second two down [Music] swing and a miss one and two two straight fouled off and they’ll do it again let’s go just misses with that one spoils that one and it remains two and two two outs and one in scoring position not close with that one ball three spencer Steer in the ODX circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here so now two on and two outs well that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk very gritty first and second two outs spencer Steer the next to hit for the Reds line drive base hit runner around third on his way to the plate he’ll score thomas quickly gets it back in as the go-ahad runner pulls up at third gets it done to drive in the run and tie it back up anytime you rip a line drive the other way you feel really good about what you did at the plate you trusted your hands you let the ball travel and you took the ball straight to it that’s great work right there and now the DH Connor Joe check swing called strike well lots of pitches thrown in this first inning and it’s kind of that nightmare scenario for starting pitching but you know what it’s still early enough he can settle in he can get some length if he just cleans up his mechanics a little bit [Applause] that one down the line and foul ball two on two outs popped up foul territory behind the plate makes the grab and that’s the inning runscoring double here for the Reds all even at one a piece top of the second and now the veteran third baseman Aueno Suarez andy Abbott back to work and a foul ball fouled off left side next pitch is outside o2 fast ball way out of the zone i think he’s trying to speed him off got to stay back off speed’s probably coming up the middle mlan sends it to first leadoff man retired here in the second 96 leftielder Lordis Guriel Jr here’s Lordis Guriel Jr right through there for a strike tied up here in the early going popped up dela Cruz pulls it down and there’s two gone that was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate had pretty good timing on it just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up so two down now and here is Payman Smith looked like it was a little bit up and there’s a ball two balls no strike high in the air out to right stevenson he’s got it and that is out number three we go to the bottom of the second tied at one back here in Cincinnati bottom of the second here’s Jos Trovinho fast for a strike i understand you want to try to gauge that guy’s fast ball but you also have to be aggressive and ready to hit in your zone now you’re in a tough spot and a swing and a miss and now one away made quick work of him right there Siggy i know that’s the kind of at bat maybe leaves a lot of fans wondering what was he doing up there right yeah and I get that i mean you take two straight strikes then chase one way out of the zone it’s It’s just not a good at bat it’ll leave you shaking your head as a hitter if not worse but there’s always going to be those trips to the plate where you’re just lost up there and that was one of them for sure and now here is Will Benson first pitch doesn’t find the zone and that one is inside clyde Washington with home plate duties in this one little bit of a low zone move from Clyde nothing crazy though pitchers that work consistently down around the knees and are able to command their offspe stuff tend to have some pretty good success with him back there behind the plate next offering is in for a strike fans don’t really understand the familiarity and relationship players and coaches have with umpires i mean you see them a lot yeah but they’re all out there trying to do their best and perform at a high level so when you respect that I think over time you can develop a relationship with them inside quarter for a strike and now three and two as the game has moved along we see more and more information supplied by teams about the umpires i’ve been in clubouses where they have pictures of all four umpires nicknames hometowns and as well hobbies listed just so you can kind of small talk the umpire a little bit that’s great next for Cincinnati Matt Mlan and that’s downstairs and outside that one finds the zone and it’s one and one here we go swing and a miss ugly swing right there two outs base is empty [Music] oh this one in the air right field carol he’s got it and that’ll end the [Music] inning through two we’re tied one a piece and we’re back alec Thomas now alec Thomas [Music] check swing called strike oh one and one and two that’s a really good job of laying off the O2 high fast ball is going to make that pitcher really have to respect this hitter even though he’s behind in the count this one lifted in the air left field benson makes the grab one down catcher Jose and now the catcher comes up to him Jose Herrera let’s go fast ball for a strike and it’s 0 and one and that’s outside one ball one strike the one-1 is fouled off i wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated he just having a hard time catching up fouls it off still one and two [Music] that one ran inside almost got [Music] him struck him out looking so back to the top of the Arizona lineup this is Corbin Carroll 0 for one he struck out swinging last time first pitch and he just misses and out [Music] that one is upstairs way to lay off that fast ball up right there you’re looking for something you see well that you can handle but you also have to keep the discipline so that you’re not popping up pitches that are just a little too high outside three and one catel Marte would be next if they can extend the inning and he’s homered already so I’m sure he’d love a chance to do some more damage here swing and a miss as he was late that time the guy’s going this good he’s retired seven in a row you got to step out of the box fake bug now that’s strike three and the third out so we take a break diamondbacks down quickly still tied 1-1 and welcome back to the ballpark as we go to the last of the third here’s the center fielder TJ Fredel in there for a strike at the bottom of the zone man I mean nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was next offering is down low hacks and misses it’s a strikeout well that’s a blue zone right there or the cold zone on the hitting chart just doesn’t have much success in that part of the strike zone and a really good job of the pitcher executing try to go there as often as you can the numbers are in your favor now at the plate Santiago Espino right through there for a strike [Music] pitch misses ball one this one in the air here under it makes the grab for the second out oh that’s a frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter right there i mean that pitch was right down the middle i think he got a little too excited came out of his mechanics and instead of driving that ball somewhere he popped it up unfortunate for him dela Cruz batting for the second time and that’s strike one [Music] and that’s downstairs and the count is one and one two down nobody on pitch misses there two and two recognized that change up right out of the hand just spit on it now a pop up on the infield suarez and that will end the inning nothing doing here this half three innings complete all tied 1-1 back here at Great American Ballpark John Chambi with Chris Singleton and set to lead off the fourth Catel Marte come on fast ball for a strike you know these Dbacks just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game so many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches they’re chasing outside of the strike zone you can’t do much of anything with those locations and that’s been true again today ah that hit him and the lead off man is aboard to start the inning go ahead run on base haldo Purdomo stands in now for the Diamondbacks he’s 0 for one and as a pitcher when the hitters are swinging at everything you feel no need to challenge inside the zone you just keep working the corners and expanding that strike zone and beyond and they just keep eating right out of your hand and that’s way high and one and one marte aboard here at first with nobody out and that one fouled off with two strikes may see some movement over there at first base trying to stay out of the double play right here gets a piece and stays alive ruer at first with no outs here in the air left field down the line and that gets down in the corner throw comes in runner stopped second and third nobody out a perfect example right there that plate discipline it pays off the deeper he gets into account the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle here’s Josh Naylor golden opportunity right here and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter base runners at second and third here no outs swinging a grounder foul first base [Music] side one ball in the dirt but no advance from the runners [Music] next pitch is outside [Music] now a slow roller to second mlan that’s out number one and a run comes in to score well you’re definitely looking to do more with that opportunity at the plate two runners in scoring position but at least he puts the ball in play they bring across one run still one out there to pick up auheno Suarez up to the plate now rolled out to second in his first at bat fought off foul swings here and drives one well left field way back and you can forget it and they tack on to their lead it’s 4-1 that’s a swing that’ll boost the win probability for sure that’s exactly the pitch he was looking for crushes it and hits it out of the ballpark base is empty one away here’s Guriel there’s a strike no ball one strike next offering is in for a strike activity in the bullpen for the Reds nick Martinez up and throwing for Terry Francona sudter also getting ready swing and a miss struck him out now five strikeouts for him on the mound pay Smith will hit next smith 29 years old a former first round pick back in 2017 gets under and pops it up dela Cruz brings it in for the third out [Music] dbacks at a pair on the homer it’s now 41 you’re dialed into the show back here in Cincinnati now it’s the right fielder Tyler Stevenson stevenson well after putting up a nice inning on offense got some runs across this is where you look for the starter to go out there have a shutdown inning don’t give that other team any hope uh you just hope that he can get through this inning get the bats back up there while they’re hot long drive base here and a good start to the inning right there does a great job of staying in the big part of the field man there are a lot of hits there spencer Steer digs in now doubled into his first AB swing and a miss as he was out front that time next offering is fouled back stevenson gets his lead at first nobody out swinging a ball lifted in the air right field he just missed it carol makes the catch and there’s one gone now that is designated hitter Conor Joe and next is the designated hitter Connor Joe well usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound in this situation ahead 200 he’s put himself in a really good spot and that one sliced foul he had a foul ball [Applause] foul ball another two- two upcoming cut on and miss struck him out he’s notched four strikeouts now came inside with that two strike fast ball nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate couldn’t get around on it and catch it out front many times if you do it’s a foul ball and you know a lot of pitchers they really don’t like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter and when they’ve got him up against the ropes got to figure out a way to put them away did a nice job right there trevino in the box now as he leaves that one up high two outs swinging a foul back that’s out of play come on fights that one away still one and two also really good at bat but what I like about this guy his bat stays in the zone for a long time gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches swag and a miss struck him out he picks up his fifth strike out on the hill reds leave one and this is still a 41 ball game we’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth nick Martinez just trying to keep this one close here and this is where a bullpin can give their players a chance to fight back into the game so digging in Alec Thomas fly to left his first time just missed well these Diamondbacks really impressed me with the quality of their bats in this one it’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work it looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early get him out of the game before he settles in so I’d say mission accomplished next pitch in for a strike one and two struck him out luke that was pretty nasty well he froze him with a great fast ball right on the corner it’s kind of like bowling when you think the ball’s going to get into the gutter and somehow just hangs onto that edge and knocks down a pin well he got the outside corner of the plate and got that called third strike on the ground mlan throws to first and the first two set down in the top of the fifth now batting right Corbin Harold so the batting order turns over corbin Carroll stands in now for the Diamondbacks who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts just missed one two down nobody on and we’re in the top of the fifth two balls no strike struggled a little bit in this one couple of strikeouts earlier but doing a much better job in this at bat to get ahead and find a good hitter count at 2 and 0 inside and it’s three and 0 catel Marte waiting to hit for the Dbacks let’s see if he gives him anything to hit here that one ripped and it’s a one hopper off the wall should be extra bases and into second easily with a two out double that’s how you take advantage of a three 0 count right there you’re expecting to see a good pitch and that’s exactly what happened just like that it’s a double and a really good at bat so runner at second two down catel Marte stands in now for the Diamondbacks that’s in there strike one cincinnati ball one there one carol at second with two down that one is absolutely belted back there makes the catch on the edge of the track one left for the Diamondbacks but they lead it four to one bottom of the inning in now for the Reds will Benson thought back to work check swing called strike 0 and one well these Reds looking to string together better at bats when they have runners on but it just hasn’t happened for them yet they only have one hit with runners in scoring position so a lot of squandered opportunities it’s tough because those are moments you just can’t get back foul ball it stays nothing and two [Music] and that just misses swing and a pop off in foul ground suarez hauls it in and there’s one away oh I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning anything after that a hitter or two is bonus but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line so up next Matt Mlan flyed to right his first time bottom of the zone and a called strike it’s just been an impressive outing so far continues to pound the zone pitch after pitch and he’s been able to stay down that’s what’s been key this one in the air center field thomas sizing it up he’s got it and there’s two away now betting the center now here’s the Red’s leadoff man TJ Fredel singled back to the first and scored their only run he’s one for two that misses off the outside edge the Dbacks leading by three last half of inning number five next offering is in for a strike one ball one strike gets the outside corner with that one the one two hard on the ground to first he takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it reds go down quietly and they trail it 4-1 and we’re back top six and the batter will be the shortstop heraldo Peromo the shorts stop takes a ball foul ball hard hit right side and a quick out number one up next for the Diamondback the designated hitter Josh Naylor and now it’s Josh Naylor a former first round pick and he’s really turned into a nice everyday player and ball one base is swing back in the fourth a two-run homer and that helped them get the lead and what a swing it was boo poetry in motion and those are the type that you hardly feel when you connect with the baseball just so smooth a great feeling off the bat that one in the dirt and it’s one and0 knee high that’s in for a strike swings through that one out in front that time swing and a miss struck him out and Arizona is set down one two three so they make short work of him there 234 do up in the home half of the sixth it’s the Diamondbacks four and the Reds won and welcome back to the ballpark well we go bottom six and ready to hit now for Cincinnati santiago Espol and the first offering a fast ball for a strike the Diamondbacks with some movement in the pen kendall Graveman up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello maya getting cranked up as [Music] well slashed foul down the right side that’ll hook off into the seats come on the O2 one ball two strike fast ball is outside two balls two strike strike three got him with the sweeper ellie Dea Cruz the next to hit for the Reds go for two in this one he swings and fouls one off the Reds trailing by three here in the bottom of the six [Music] strike three and that’s two in a row gosh here it is hit it three pitch strikeout all fast balls man he’s got a lot of confidence in that pitch right now and now the right fielder Tyler Stevenson the walk and he’s also singled got it started a little too early strike one oh he’s got to be pretty proud of this outing so far sometimes guys cower coming into a ballpark like this but he has attacked hitters pitching on the road like this is very impressive this has been a treat to watch and he chases a high fast ball there two strike drilled out towards left center field that’s well struck this looks like extra bases makes the turn and heads for second in safely it’s a double and his second hit really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat that pretty much split the zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay so runner at second two down spencer Steer the next to hit for the Reds first offering and it just misses one and0 [Applause] out front rip foul and a big swing and a miss one and two [Music] that one way inside straighten him up a little bit to the foul ball stays alive [Applause] next pitch is outside connor Joe on deck for [Applause] Cincinnati let’s go back to work 3-2 now spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another now just about to hit that century mark 100 pitches for this game and a popup right side foul territory and that is that welcome back we’re in the seventh we have a new pitcher on the mound Brent Sudter and compared to a lot of other relievers strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year so the defense should be active and it’s Lordis Goreel Jr leftielder Lordis Giel Jr and first offering is fouled off sudter in his eighth season he features a fourseam fastball a sinker a change up and he works in a slider swing and a miss had him out front for the strike out he came out of his mechanics there typically likes to shoot the ball the other way but that time a little anxious and here is Pave Smith hit hard on the ground to short whips it to first on the run and very nicely done for the out hey man four pitches two outs that is an excellent pace alec Thomas so two down now and here is Alec Thomas in there at the knees that’s strike one the Cincinnati Bullben has some movement ian Jabbo up and throwing for Terry Francona barlo getting loose as well and that one upstairs ball one a little out front there as he swings through it betty really sells the change up with that arm action got it it’s a three up three down inning offense held in check there midway in inning number seven and it’s time to stretch it’s the Diamondbacks four and the Reds won [Music] we’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh kendall Graveman hasn’t pitched in the last three days now it’s the Red’s DH connor Joe the Reds in striking distance but have some work to do boo it starts with the laidoff man i need a good at bat out of him right here and the first pitch misses for ball one let’s go two and0 [Applause] called strike right there it’s been tough for the offense so far but you can’t get frustrated you got to find a way to shake it off go up there and relax that’s the only way you’re going to be able to put runs up on the board just missed three in one and that is out of play [Music] swing a highf fly ball deep left field way back there it’s off the top of the wall now he’ll turn for second the throw in not in time that’s a leadoff double the first move felt like a bit of a guess you have to be right in those spots or things can get away from you awfully quickly runner in scoring position no outs here’s the catcher Jose Trevinho oh and he hit him that hit him first that wasn’t even close you know sometimes a guy will barely miss the zone and hit someone but right there he completely lost the handle and that’s when it gets a little scary benson in the box now takes strike one well in this situation with runners on you got to get ahead in the count so that you can dictate the rest of the at bat nice job right there the tying run at the plate and that is downstairs one and one good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with you’re better off taking that pitch [Applause] [Music] tying run at the plate [Music] off the mark there full count three and two matt Mlan up next for the Reds [Applause] 3-2 bows that off to the left and we’ll do it again swinging a drive deep right field going back holds it in on the warning track runner tags at second and he moves up 90 ft runners at the corners now one away now we’ll see if moving up to third there pays off for him he didn’t have to tag and go but now he can score a lot of different ways doesn’t have to be a base hit we’ll see what happens matt Mlan now at the plate and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike not sure exactly what he was thinking there good sinker ball pitcher goes with a fast ball in a double play situation when he needs something on the ground that misses and that’s ball [Music] one he’s looking for a ground ball to get a double play and out of this jam and a ball in two strikes on the ground to the left down the line and it’s fouled that misses two balls two strikes [Music] and the swing and a miss and two away now oh that slider was way out of the zone and for me it just comes down to not seeing the pitch out of the hand not tracking it into the zone and then also being a little bit anxious not confident in your two strike approach and so when a guy’s in that position you get him to commit early and a lot of times you get the swing and miss as you did right there now the Diamondbacks manager is out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen kendall Graveman departs and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base back with a new pitcher after this so out of the pen for the Diamondbacks Jaylen Beinks well he’s been a really tough guy to take deep this season you usually have to string some hits together in order to get to them tj Friedel the next to hit for the Reds one for three close one doesn’t get the call and that’s ball one with the tying run at the plate here the bottom of the seventh ground ball right side marte throws the first in time inning over on the ground out took just two pitches to finish the frame out of the bullpen nice work from the snake pen there eighth inning coming up it’s the Diamondbacks four and the Reds won welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth in Jabau and he’s had a struggle so far this year as you can see the inflated erra looking to bring that down a little bit right here now the Dback’s catcher Jose Herrera and that one fouled off and that one is downstairs and that is ball one [Music] and a swing for a strike some hitters are just more confident they can track that first pitch out of the hand of the pitcher they don’t care if they fall behind 01 just missed the one-1 is fouled off little tardy on that fast ball he’s gonna have to get it going a little quicker get that front foot down way inside base is empty one away and we’re in the top of the eighth in the air left field down the line that one gets down for a hit a for the Diamondbacks here’s Catel Marte he had a big swing for these guys way back in the first inning yeah Boo didn’t waste any time in this one the solo shot really got his team going and he’s looking for more right here jabo picks over Carol back in on a dive at 96 that pitch is in for a strike man at first one away and there’s a foul ball swings through that and it’s a strike out definitely not a parte for Catel Marte next to hit for Arizona Peralo Purdomo and that drops in for a strike and that’s in for a strike well a bat like this is almost over as it begins in this situation you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be you just got to hope that you can make contact in the dirt goes to second and he’s into scoring position with two away on a wild pitch [Music] and a swing and a miss and that’s that one left for Arizona as they hold on to a 4-1 lead back here in Cincinnati out of the bottom of the eighth here’s the third baseman Santiago Espino and that one fouled off got to keep things airtight defensively right here on your toes ready to make a play if you can get this to the ninth with a three-run lead it should be a W line to left and no one can get there around first and hustling for second the throw in and the bottom of the eight starts with a double ripped that one down the line and kept it fair and even when you hit it that far out front you still have to keep your hands tight to your body so you don’t hook around that baseball and put it in foul territory and that right there was perfect really important at bat coming up now runner in scoring position no outs ellie Dea Cruz the next to hit for the Reds there’s a strike hitter’s got some good opposite field power what I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit that one missing inside two and one next pitch misses inside and that’s ball three get ready for some action here good RBI guy at the plate runners in scoring position and the hitters count ground ball and that’s through the infield espion around third
